COVER STORY >> ELECTION 2016

Tammy Duckworth gets her Senate seat Unofficial totals showed Duckworth with 55 percent of vote Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth captured a U.S. Senate seat Tuesday, capping a rapid rise from injured Iraq War hero to member of the world’s most exclusive club. Riding a compelling personal story of perseverance and a host of political advantages, the two-term congresswoman from Hoffman Estates defeated Sen. Mark Kirk, a Highland Park Republican seeking a second full term. Unofficial totals showed Duckworth with 55 percent compared with 40 percent for Kirk. “We showed a campaign that respects the voters and is focused on practical solutions rather than shopworn slogans can actually be successful,” Duckworth told cheering supporters at a downtown Chicago hotel. “We showed that a

relentless focus on rebuilding Illinois’ middle class and respecting hard work rather than wealth can be successful too.” Kirk had widely been viewed as the most vulnerable Republican in the nation to seek re-election this year. Democrats hoping to retake a majority in the chamber had viewed a Duckworth victory as critical to their national efforts. The win also means Democrats reclaimed the Senate seat that once belonged to President Barack Obama. Duckworth, who is Asian-American, becomes the second woman of color that Illinois has sent to the Senate after electing Carol Moseley Braun, who is African-American, in 1992. Duckworth ran extremely strong in Chicago and Cook County and

was doing well in the suburban collar counties, while Kirk held an edge in more rural Downstate counties. SCHAKOWKY TO SERVE AGAIN Bad publicity surrounding U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky’s husband in the final weeks of the election didn’t have much effect on voters in the 9th Congressional District. The longtime congresswoman

was re-elected to another term of office Nov. 8. With 262 of 314 precincts reporting, Schakowsky had 107,242 votes, and her opponent, Republican Joan Lasonde, had 71,832 votes, unofficial results show. That’s roughly 60 percent of the vote for Schakowsky and 40 percent for Lasonde. Schakowsky, of Evanston, has represented the district in Congress since 1999. Known for her progressive and liberal positions, she ran a lowkey campaign with no ads or mass mailings, despite having seven times more money in her campaign fund than Lasonde. Lasonde, of Wilmette, made an impressive showing in her first run for political office. She did a lot of door-to-door work and held a few news conferences. FOXX TO BE COOK COUNTY’S NEXT STATE’S ATTORNEY

Democrat Kim Foxx of Flossmoor took more than 70 percent of the votes Nov. 8 and declared victory over Republican Christopher Pfannkuche for Cook County state’s attorney Foxx, who beat incumbent Anita Alvarez in the March primary, had 1,364,501 votes to Pfannkuche’s 536,324 with 96 percent of precincts reporting. Results are unofficial. Both candidates agreed street violence remained a major concern for residents of Chicago and suburban Cook County. Foxx, former chief of staff for Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, advocated programs to reduce recidivism; develop jobs in neighborhoods where the economy depends on drug sales and increase social services to help people battle addiction. Pfannkuche, of Chicago, has been a prosecutor for 30 years. SEE ELECTION PAGE 5

Niles sewer project on time, on budget Thanks to good weather and

the addition of extra construction crews, the $9 million Cleveland corridor sewer project in Niles is coming in on budget and ahead of schedule, officials said. The construction project was started in May as part of the Niles sewer master plan developed to address severe rainwater flooding that has impacted more than 140 homes in the suburb for years, said Mary Anderson, Niles public services director. Initially, the project was expected to wrap up around midDecember. But officials said the work should be done by Nov. 30, save for some landscaping that is scheduled to be completed next spring.

Democracy & our very vulnerable future ‘The election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury’ BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY It was a moment as tiny as marking a ballot - those two minutes of the second debate, when the presidential election hung suspended mid-diatribe and the candidates let go of their opponent’s flaws long enough to honor a bit of common humanity. No big deal. Yeah, I know. But as the thing winds down to the day of reckoning, and a sense of lost values and lost democracy overwhelms me - the election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury (signifying nothing?) - I find myself going back to those two minutes over and over, trying to understand why they hit me with such force. The second debate, possibly the ugliest playground fight of the three, was conducted in a “town hall” format, with a preselected audience of independent voters sharing the stage with the candidates, and at intervals an audience member was invited to ask the candidates a question. The debate was virtually over when moderator Martha Raddatz announced that “we’ve sneaked in one more question” and a man in the audience stood up. “My question to both of you,” he said, “is, regardless of the current rhetoric, would either of you name one positive thing that you respect in one another?” What? The moment seemed almost parental. Maybe in a way it was: a corralling of two out-of-control youngsters into respectable behavior. In the scant mention I’ve read about it, the question, unsurprisingly, has been dismissed as trite and nicey-nice and irrelevant to the absolutely serious matter of whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should be the next, oh God, president, the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth, yada yada . . .

ROBERT C. KOEHLER Tribune Content Agency

“The point I’m struggling to make, here at the brink of the 2016 election, is that our future is the newborn we hold in our arms, vulnerable and dependent on us and deserving the best ...” Nevertheless, there was a palpable, if temporary, change in the dynamic of the situation. The palpable disgust each candidate exuded, without restraint, toward the other one - the sterile stump blather: “Yo, America, I’m way better than that fool over there” - quieted down. The debate was suddenly unscripted. The moment was live. They were both vulnerable. Clinton jumped in. “I think that’s a very fair and important question,” she said. “Look, I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about Donald. I don’t agree with nearly anything else he says or does, but I do respect that. And I think that is something that as a mother and a grandmother is very important to me.” She went on a little more, reverting to stump-speech mode: “So I believe that this election has become in part so - so conflict-oriented, so intense because there’s a lot at stake. . . .” Etc., etc. Then Trump answered: “I will say this about Hillary. She doesn’t quit. She doesn’t give up. I respect that. I tell it like it is. She’s a fighter. I disagree with

much of what she’s fighting for. I do disagree with her judgment in many cases. But she does fight hard, and she doesn’t quit, and she doesn’t give up. And I consider that to be a very good trait.” And that’s it. As I say, no big deal, except . . . I couldn’t stop thinking about a quote I once heard: You’re as close to God as you are to the person you like the least. What had just happened stirred awake a different sort of consciousness, or so it seemed. And it was gone in a moment and had no effect on the outcome of the race or what the next four years will bring or the sport-and-spectacle media coverage that refuses to let up or the actual issues that matter about the nation’s future - war, poverty, racism, environmental exploitation - or, anything else. But still, there it was, a moment of interruption to the national hooting contest, a disruption of the national certainty that hatred fixes so firmly into place. And I thought about the time, many years ago, when my great nephew Joey was a newborn and I held him for the first time. “But still,” I later wrote, “this is what I thought, that there was a quality to Joey’s helplessness that seemed more godlike than anything else I had ever encountered. What if, I thought, the nature of God were openness and helplessness? What if destructive power were a human quality, not God’s?” The point I’m struggling to make, here at the brink of the 2016 election, is that our future is the newborn we hold in our arms, vulnerable and dependent on us and deserving the best. I quiet my own certainties as I think about this and acknowledge that what I don’t know is infinitely greater than what I do know, or think I do. And the mark I will make on my ballot is so much smaller than the pledge I make right now, to work for - to nurture - peace no matter who is elected. Practice these safety tips to ensure a happy holiday Safety tips include avoiding displaying gifts from window view

Don’t display holiday gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Store gifts before you go away on a holiday trip. If you go out for the evening, turn on lights, radio, or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied. Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax deductible, etc. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers, don’t contribute. Use only fire resistant ornaments on a holiday tree, and make sure that the Christmas tree lights are in good working order. Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home. If you have house guests, advise them of your security precautions and make sure they follow them.

SHOPPING Shop before dark if possible. When shopping at night, go with a friend or family member. Never park in an unlit area or parking lot, no matter how convenient it is. Pay attention to anyone who appears to be loitering in the parking lot and remain alert at all times. Thieves will target victims who are distracted or on their cell phones and may even create a distraction themselves to pickpocket or steal. Lock your packages and gifts

in your vehicle’s trunk. Keep your vehicle’s doors locked and windows closed. Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your key in your hand when walking to your vehicle. Consider carrying your purse under your coat. If possible, carry a cellular telephone at all times in case of an emergency. Never leave your purchases unattended, even for a few minutes, especially in a parking lot or crowded store. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card, when possible. Ensure that children are not left

Niles West takes fourth-place in the IHSA Class 4A state finals BY MARK GREGORY Sports Editor @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

NORMAL — In the beginning of the season, the Niles West volleyball players joked around about how great it would be to play in the state finals. As the year rolled along and the Wolves began to win matches – the joke became a reality and their opponents became the punch line. And when West took the court last weekend at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in the IHSA Class 4A state finals, the team still played with the same jovial attitude it had when state was only a joke early in the season. “Our motto all season long has been to relax and have fun,” said Niles West coach Stacy Metoyer. “These girls play great when they do that. Whey they tense up or they think too much or we get on them too much, they shut down. So, this was how they played all season long and today they did that. They played like a family and they played relaxed and they had

fun. This feels pretty good. This team has fought all year long. They have done some amazing things and beat some amazing teams. Just the experience to come down to state is pretty cool.” Niles West dropped both its state matches, losing 20-25, 25-21, 16-25 in the third-place match to Stevenson and fell in the semifinal 25-13, 25-15 to eventual state champion Mother McAuley – the No. 1 ranked team in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. In the final match of the season, Kaila Johanson led the Wolves with 15 kills, while Natalie Pehar added 14. Eleni Balourdos tallied 27 assists for West, adding a teambest nine digs. Against McAuley, Pehar tallied nine kills, Balourdos added 15 assists and Johanson and Bianca Tomuta each had five digs. There was a time during the season that Niles West would have never expected to be in the final four. “I think it is crazy,” Pehar said. SEE FOUR PAGE 9

Late field goal carries Maine S. to semis BY SCOTT TAYLOR For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com

Sean McNulty nailed a game-winning field goal to send Maine South to the Class 8A semifinals.

Maine South had a pair of great two minute drives and that proved to be the difference as the Hawks (9-3) advanced to the Class 8A semifinals with a 34-31 win over Lincoln-Way East Saturday. After the Griffins scored a tying touchdown with 1:58 left, Maine South drove down the field. On fourth-and-eight from the Lincoln-Way 46, the Hawks went for it and converted on a 25-yard pass from Nick Leongas to Luke Hinkamp. “I saw the corner bumped out and Luke was one-on-one with the safety and he did a great job,” Leongas said. “It is nice that he is 6-6. Coach had a lot of confidence in us and we did a great job and executed.” “We’ve done it all year and we liked the look,” Maine South coach Dave Inserra said. “What a huge catch by Luke. It was a big play. I had great faith in the defense, too, that they would get the stop if needed.” Leongas then ran to the 3-yard line, setting up the game-winning field goal by Sean McNulty, who had two blocked earlier in the game. McNulty calmly drilled the field goal with 9.4 seconds left and a last hope pass for Lincoln-Way ended incomplete.

“I knew the blocking was going to be there, I knew the snap was going to be good and I knew the hold was going to be good,” McNulty said. “When all those things were put together, I knew I was going to make the kick. My teammates came up to me and had confidence in me and I had confidence to make the kick. I wasn’t nervous at all.” Maine South took advantage of a couple fortunate calls on the opening possession of the game, including a roughing the punter penalty, to score on a 56-yard screen pass from Nick Leongas to Fotis Kokosioulis The Hawks then went up 14-0 three plays into the second quarter on a 23-yard run from Kokosioulis. The Griffins got on the board with a field goal and then blocked a Hawk field goal. That gave them the momentum and they responded with a touchdown to make it 14-10. That momentum continued with a defensive stop and another touchdown to take a 17-14. But the Hawks weren’t done as they moved to the Lincoln-Way East 2-yard line in 30 seconds and kicked the tying field goal at the half. “We firmly believe we can put points on the board and we probably should have had a touchSEE SEMIS PAGE 9

COLLEGE

Oakton women look to Gonzalez to lead the way Mallory Gonzalez (Mount Prospect, Prospect High School) is up for the challenge that comes with being named captain of the Oakton Community College women’s basketball team for the 2016-17 season. Last year, the multi-talented 5-10 guard averaged 11.2 points, 4 assists and 7.2 rebounds in an injury-plagued season and is eager to improve on those numbers for the upcoming campaign. “I’ve been working hard with the team and bonding with each player personally,” Gonzalez said during one of the team’s final practices before the start of the season.

SEMIS FROM PAGE 8 down,” Inserra said. “We almost went for it but took the points and used it as a positive going into half.” “Every day in practice we work on the two minute drill,” Leongas said. “We work on running plays fast and making quick adjust-

FOUR FROM PAGE 7 “We went through a point in the season when we were depressed because we lost to New Trier [in conference] and now we are here. We said from the beginning of season that we were good and that we were going to state and I don’t think anyone believed us. After [we beat] New Trier [in the regional] we knew we could do it. We were more in everyone’s faces telling each other ‘don’t give up, we can do this.’ We were so confident. There were a lot of other teams that thought they could just beat us.” Metoyer agreed that when West won the regional, the attitude of the team changed. “We won 15 of 16 matches in the middle of the season and we were on a roll and then we lost to New Trier in conference and then we dropped two more in conference,” she said. “Then, we got into regionals and it just took off. We had lost to New Trier three times this season and when we beat them, it was like getting over that hump. We ended their season and they usually end ours.” As the season ends for West, so does the career of seniors Johanson, Balourdos, Tomuta, Caro-

“Communicating with each other is going to be the key for us to win many games this year. I take my role as captain very seriously, and I’m looking forward to seeing our hard work pay off.” According to Oakton Head Coach Melissa Rauschenberg, entering her third season with the Owls, Gonzalez is vital to the team’s success. “Mallory’s extremely knowledgeable, as she can play any position on the floor for us,” Rauschenberg said of her Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) All-Conference player. “She also passes along her under-

standing of the game to help her teammates get better.” Atorena “T” Michael (Lincolnwood, Niles West High School), another ISCC All-Conference player, will run the offense as point guard for the Owls. Michael averaged 7.5 points and 4.9 boards last season. “As point guard I’ve been spending extra time with players so they will trust me and look up to me as a leader. I’m ready to step up my play this year,” Michael said. Rauschenberg also said she expects newcomer Marian Ismail (Niles, Maine East High School) to make immediate contributions.

“Marian is very talented and has a nice shot,” Rauschenberg said. “She also sees the court well, which is very important since she’ll be playing as a two guard.” Rauschenberg, who honed her basketball skills playing at Maine South High School, led the Owls to the ISCC title in her first season as head coach in the 2014-15 season. “Coach is demanding but fair,” Michael added. “She’s young but extremely serious. I like that she engages with us in practice and joins in during scrimmages.”

ments and get the defense off balance and I think it worked today.” The Hawks regained the lead in the third quarter on a run by Kokosioulis, but a second blocked kick on the next possession gave Lincoln-Way life and it tied the game. Maine South grabbed the lead back late on a 48-yard touchdown

pass from Leongas to Hinkamp. “I just saw the ball and knew I had to make a play,” Hinkamp said. “That’s all I had to do on that one. I have an advantage of being 6-6, so I just had to go up and catch it.” “He was my third option on the play,” Leongas said. “We work on scramble drills all the time in

practice and he did a great job. I give him all the credit.” The Hawks will now return home to take on unbeaten Palatine Saturday for a berth in the state championship game the following Saturday at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in Champaign. “We’ve been dreaming about

this since we were kids watching Maine South football games,” Hinkamp said. “We have one more game to get to state and hopefully we can get down there.” “They have a great defense,” Inserra said of Palatine. They lost their quarterback but they are still a good team and are well coached. We will have our hands full.”

lyn Lomahan, Hailey Fishman, Gabriela Tellez, Elmina Alic and Bethany Keith. “I have had Kaila and [Eleni] since they were freshmen and I was able to see them develop into leaders and this whole group of seniors has helped with great chemistry,” Metoyer said. “This group truly acts like a family and that is big in volleyball, you really

need that chemistry and without our senior leadership, we wouldn’t have had that.” The cupboard will not be left bare and Pehar, a sophomore, will lead a group of Wolves who hope to head back to state. “We saw her in seventh grade and you could just tell she was head and shoulders above everyone else. She started on the right

side her freshman year and was third in kills and she has a natural ability,” Metoyer. “She has natural athletic ability – she can jump 10-2 – and I think if she works hard in the offseason, she can be one of the best players in the conference.” Johanson hopes Pehar and West can build off what the seniors started.

“This is a big honor for the entire team,” she said. “We never thought we would actually get here, we always joked about it and now that it is a reality, it feels really good and it is really special. I hope we left a legacy. I want them to strive to be as good as this team was. I want them to have the confidence and believe in themselves that they can get here as well.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Oakton Community College sophomore point guard and captain Ryan Matthew (Park Ridge, Maine South High School) was selected men’s basketball District 4 player of the week according to the latest Region IV National Junior College Athletic Association report. Oakton, which competes in Division II, went 2-0 last week with wins over Truman College (82-77) and College of DuPage (67-65). Matthew averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4 assists in those two games, including shooting 54 percent from the field and 81 percent from the charity stripe.

Black Friday Shopping Tips Black Friday brings out almost as much crazy as a full moon. The day after Thanksgiving has practically become a national holiday with the hype it generates. Stores of all types hold special discount sales and promotions intended to get everyone excited about the Christmas season kickoff and get you spending like . . . well, like crazy. So, should you decide to partake of a madness that closely resembles Times Square on New Year’s Eve multiplied by the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, what other shoppers are you up against?

HERE ARE FIVE OF THE MOST COMMON SHOPPERS YOU’LL SEE: 1. THE FAMILY There are a couple of subgroups here. Either the one where screaming, tired kids are brought along while the parent desperately tries to find a particular item at a bargain, or the ones with SEAL Team 6-like coordination who aim to grab all of the assigned items before heading to the extraction point (i.e. the cash register).

DAVE SAYS By Dave Ramsey

2. THE HOARDER It’s Black Friday, not Y2K. This person is reminiscent of the guy who felt the need to barricade himself in a bunker in the middle of the woods with 20 years’ worth of freeze-dried chipped beef. The hoarder seems paranoid about not taking full advantage of Black Friday and attempts to grab every last one of a particular sales item. Then after the Friday flurry subsides, they’ll either bring back all the extras they don’t need or sell them online. 3. THE PLANNER They know the store. They know the route. They know what is where, and they don’t spend too much time basking in the glory of

grabbing an item off the shelf because they are too busy heading to the next one. Better be quick if you’re up against one. 4. THE ACTION SEEKERS These people are more obstruction than competition. They like the energy of being in the middle of the madness, though they may only be shopping for a DVD. They tend to stand out in the crowd because they are the only ones with a smile on their face. (But if they aren’t careful, another shopper may wipe it off for them.) 5. THE WINGER They are as off-the-cuff as a lost button. They see an item that looks like it would make a good gift, and they grab it. Boom. Christmas shopping done. We should all be so lucky. As dangerous as the Black Friday circus is, there is yet one more danger to look out for this Christmas season — shopping without a budget. People who hit the Black Friday sales without a plan overspend and end up in a mood that’s more Scrooge than Santa! —Used with permission from DaveRamsey.com
