Des Plaines Park District offers free fitness program for disabled veterans The Des Plaines Park District, in association with the Maine-Niles Association for Special Recreation and Allen Force, is offering a free program to disabled veterans. Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies is a program created by Allen Force that is designed to provide fitness opportunities to disabled veterans through specialized training. Eligible veterans will meet with a licensed HMHB trainer for 15 complimentary, personalized training sessions and will additionally receive a free one-year fitness center membership for themselves and a “Battle Buddy” to accompany them on their workouts. The Maine-Niles Association for Special Recreation also organizes monthly socials to bring program attendees together to network and share their stories. All Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies trainers go through a certification process in which they learn about veteran culture as well as the various afflictions that
are suffered by veterans such as traumatic injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The training process also features an interactive session with Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies graduates who share their stories from the program along with insights in how to improve the process for future veterans that enroll. Within the first year of the program, the Des Plaines Park District is the proud home of three Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies graduates and is already receiving positive reviews from the graduates. “Thanks to the Des Plaines Park District, we were able to participate in the program under the excellent guidance of Jon Kahney,” U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran Philip Hengels said. “Not only did he go out of his way to accommodate our schedules and needs, but he also helped me lose 17 pounds and become stronger than I have been in a very long time.
“Jon was not only a mentor, but has become a very good friend to my wife and I and still encourages me on my path to being healthier and staying in shape even after the program finished,” Hengels continued. “It is open to all disabled veterans and I truly wish
more of them have an opportunity to learn about it and take advantage of all that it has to offer.” For more information on Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies, visit www.dpparks.org.

GUEST COLUMN
Road to victory in WWII For Veterans Day, remembering one soldier’s dangerous job of carrying vital supplies through danger BY MARK DEPUE ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM, DIRECTOR OF ORAL HISTORY Frank Merkley is a World War II veteran who never fired his weapon in anger, but his contributions to America’s war effort were every bit as important as those of soldiers in the thick of combat. Merkley, now 96 and living in Princeton, Ill., spent his war driving trucks. It was a rare case in which the army found the perfect job based on Frank’s peacetime experiences. He had left school when he was 13 to help support the family, and had driven trucks since he was 16, working for his brother. Merkley was drafted in November 1942, and was shipped to Persia in early 1943. Once there, he drove his truck along a tenuous road deep into modern-day Iran, the first leg of a long trip toward the Soviet frontier. (America, the Arsenal of Democracy, sent more than four million tons of supplies to Russia through Persia during the war.) Then in January 1945, Frank’s unit, the 3949th Quartermaster Truck Company, was transferred to the ChinaBurma-India theater of operations. His job? To drive over the infamous “hump” in the mountains of Burma to deliver supplies to China. During his first trip on the treach-
erous Ledo Road, Frank’s truck got a flat tire. Because of that, he left the assembly area several hours after the rest of his convoy. “I don’t know how I’m here today, except the Lord saved me—twice in one day,” Merkley said 71 years later. “I was going along through that one road, that mountain there, and I come over way at the top and come around a big curve … All of a sudden the truck stopped. … The Lord stopped it. Believe me or not, the Lord stopped that truck.” A Chinese guard, whose job was to alert trucks of the impending danger, then came racing out to the road to guide Merkley around a bridge that was rotting away. Had Frank not stopped, the truck would have plunged into a deep ravine, taking him along with it. Merkley was still on the road late that night trying to catch up with his convoy. Because of the fear of snipers, he was forbidden to use his headlights, and when it started to rain, the night turned pitch black. “I couldn’t see a thing out the windshield, not one thing,” he said. “Couldn’t even see the dash. … I had my foot out on the front wheel fender, and I was trying to keep that front wheel along the edge of that mountain.” On his left, the mountain shot up toward the sky. On his right was a sheer cliff. It was certain death to any driver
who missed a curve on a dirt road that was barely wide enough to accommodate the big American trucks. Recalling that night during his oral history interview, Frank continued his story, his voice filled with emotion. “All of a sudden a big bolt of lightning come … and it lit that road up just like day. And it put daggers in – zing, zing, zing, zing, zing, zing – like that all the way up to a big sharp curve.” Guided by that brief glimpse of the danger ahead, Frank pushed forward into the dark. “And I hit that curve right on the nose,” he said. Frank has no doubt that God had intervened to save his life that night. “I can’t hardly believe myself the way He lit that road up for me so I could see. … He lit that road up just like it was day time out there – just bright lightning.” As far as Frank is concerned, God wasn’t quite done with him yet. On the first leg of his journey back to the states, a flight from China to Calcutta, he survived a plane crash. He then boarded a Liberty ship, which sailed into a three-day typhoon in the South China Sea. Needless to say, he was happy to get back to America. Once home in Princeton, he soon got back to work, eventually starting a pest control business and finally retiring at 90 after a lifetime of work. Mark DePue is the Director of Oral History at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. You can listen to stories like Merkley’s in the “Veterans Remember” section of the program’s website, www.oralhistory. illinois.gov.

Niles West sets records en route to state playoff berth BY SCOTT SCHMID For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com
Call them the Cardiac Wolves or the Comeback Kids or any other moniker that fits. But there is one thing the 2016 Niles West girls volleyball team must be called from now on and that is state semifinalists. Just two days after a scintillating comeback win that netted the Wolves their first sectional title and the program record for victories, the squad pulled even more magic out of their hat. Facing multiple match points while trailing 24-20 in the third and final game of the Schaumburg Class 4A Supersectional, Niles West rebounded to post a 25-22, 22-25, 31-29 decision over Riverside-Brookfield led by four-year varsity players Kaila Johanson and Eleni Balourdos. Niles West, which improved to 28-8 on the season, advances to take on Mother McAuley at 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Redbird Arena in Normal. Minooka and Stevenson make

up the other semi. Win or lose, the squad will wrap up the campaign a day later. “This is the best feeling I’ve ever felt in my entire life,” Balourdos said. “This is honestly the best team I’ve ever been on, such unbelievable chemistry on and off the court. I’m just so proud of my team, we’ve worked so hard since July. It feels so amazing.” The team had reached the Supersectional courtesy of a come-from-behind 20-25, 2520, 25-23 victory over Fremd in the Glenbrook South sectional final on Nov. 3. Trailing 22-16 in the final game, the Wolves stormed back to stun the Vikings and set off a wild celebration. The win was the team’s 27th of the fall, eclipsing the previous record mark set by the 2012 squad (26-9). “To set the school record, I know I’m just a sophomore but it’s ridiculous,” said outside hitSEE STATE PAGE 10

Maine South avenges losses to Barrington BY BOBBY NARANG For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com
BARRINGTON – Smiles were on all of the faces of the Maine South football players’ face following Saturday’s victory against Barrington. The Hawks, especially the seniors, had plenty of reasons to be smiling. Two years ago, the Broncos ended the Hawks’ dreams of winning a state title. Maine South had won its first 10 games, including nine in a row by double digits. But Barrington’s defense spearheaded a 21-7 victory over Maine South in the second round of the Class 8A playoffs in Park Ridge. “It was a tough loss, that’s for sure,” Maine South coach David Inserra said. “The seniors all remembered it well.” The Broncos added more frus-
tration to the Hawks’ by pulling out a 41-27 win in a Week 3 battle this season, dropping Maine South to a troubling 1-2 mark. Standing on the field at Barrington, Inserra talked about the Hawks’ becoming a wellrounded team after learning from losses to state-ranked Loyola and Barrington in back-to-back weeks. “We knew that we were a better team and had just played two very good teams and would be better,” Inserra said that day. “We had to believe in ourselves.” The Hawks certainly believe in themselves after winning for the eighth time in their last nine games with a 42-27 triumph over Barrington in a Class 8A secondround playoff game. “Beating Barrington felt great because of the revenge factor for not only earlier in the season but my sophomore year in the second round of the playoffs as
well,” said Maine South senior offensive lineman and Michigan State recruit Kevin Jarvis. With the win, the Hawks advance to the quarterfinals round, where they will play at LincolnWay East at 6 p.m. Saturday. “This was a good win,” Inserra said. “We rallied around the idea that we get a retake (to play Barrington again).” Maine South running back Fotis Kokosioulis paved the way for the victory by rushing 27 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns. The Hawks (8-3) controlled the ball with a hard-charging running game to keep Barrington’s high-octane offense off the field. Inserra said the Hawks’ controlled the line of scrimmage, in particular the defensive line. “We beat them up a little bit I think,” he said. “We beat up their offensive line, beat up their runSEE AVENGES PAGE 9

Oakton will rely on its size this season

Maine South grad Ryan Matthews will captain Oakton. AVENGES FROM PAGE 8 ning back. Hats off to our defense for playing physical. We made some mistakes and gave up some points, but I thought we played physical.”
The 2016-17 edition of the Oakton Community College men’s basketball team has something that is unteachable – height. Nine of the players on Owls’ current roster are over six feet tall. “Our strength is going to be our size this year,” said Mick Reuter, who is entering his eighth year as head coach. “Not only do we have talent, but we also have strength and size across the board. We’ll be bigger than most colleges, and opponents will have a hard time defending us.” The Owls’ most overwhelming presence on the court will be
6-9, 220-pound sophomore center Chris House. A Prospect High School product, House recently transfered to Oakton from Clinton Community College. “It feels great to be back,” he said while shooting jumpers at a recent practice. “My height is an advantage for the team, as it allows me to play different styles. To win at this level, you need height and big bodies. You don’t often see too many players like me on the court.” Sophomore point guard and captain Ryan Matthews (Park Ridge, Maine South High School) will complement House, ready to
improve on his average of 11.4 points, 4.5 assists and 5.8 rebounds last season. “I take my job as captain seriously,” Matthews said. “Being named captain for this season means a great deal to me, and I’m up to the challenge. For the most part, I lead by example and let my playing do most of the talking.” Newcomer Marion Johnson, a 6-3 forward from Des Plaines (Maine West High School) is expected to make immediate contributions. “Marion is one of our most flexible defenders,” Reuter said.
“He can defend all positions on the floor, which is extremely rare. He only wants to improve his skills and will do whatever is needed for our team to be successful.” Reuter is confident that with his nucleus of players, the Owls can win a lot of games this season. “We definitely have the talent and character to be contenders in the region and in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference,” he said. “The team is coming together as a group, and the players are accountable for themselves and want to be successful.”
The Broncos were hurt by starting quarterback Ray Niro being limited to few series because of an ankle injury suffered in the first round. Although the Broncos compiled 439 total yards and Josh
Babicz rushing for 221 yards and passing for 206 yards, the Hawks’ defense did a good job holding Barrington star running back Logan Moews to 91 yards. The Broncos definitely missed the speedy and elusive Niro,
though the 6-foot, 6-inch Babicz nearly led the Broncos to a victory. “We tried to go with (Niro), thought he was healthy enough and displayed enough in warmups,” Barrington coach
Joe Sanchez said. “Obviously, he wasn’t able to go the way we’ve seen him go. Josh went in and did a fantastic job and gave us a chance. He performed the way I would have expected. The kid is a champion.”

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2016 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM Libero Bianca Tomuta served the final four points for Niles West. “After the first game, we weren’t in a rhythm,” coach Stacy Metoyer said, whose team was making their fourth appearance in a sectional final in her 16 years at the helm. “The second game we came out strong and got in a rhythm. The third
game when we got down, we just fought. They kept fighting back, just kept fighting back and those serves were huge. I was so proud of their fight. This group, they love each other and they trust each other and they’ve shown that all year. They knew if they lost, it was the end.” Johanson topped the team with 15 kills, including six in the second game. Balourdos totaled three kills and four service points, Nicole Zelazko added four service points, two kills and a block and Carolyn Lomahan had four kills.
Earlier in the sectional, the Wolves defeated top-seed Loyola 25-19, 25-23 on Nov. 1. The Wolves again trailed 22-21 in the final game before posting four of the next five points, highlighted by three straight kills from Pehar. Lomahan then added the final kill. “Our focus level is something e’ve worked on and it comes in at the right moments,” Johanson said. “We were focused all the way to the end. We never got down at any point, even when it was 22-21. Our chemistry on the court, we are all really good
friends to begin with and that sets it up. We never get down on each other, we are always encouraging each other and we are really excited for each other.” Niles West captured the Maine West regional championship with a win against New Trier, a team that had defeated the Wolves three times during the regular season. Along with Johanson and Balourdos, the eight-member senior class is rounded out by Lomahan, Tomuta, Hailey Fishman, Gabriela Tellez, Elmina Alic and Bethany Keith.

You can’t just cruise Just sit down with your boss or owner, and explain why you can’t make it happen right now
DAVE SAYS By Dave Ramsey
DEAR DAVE, I work for a small company that just won a cruise trip for all the employees. The prize covers just the cruise tickets, and we have to pay for everything else. The problem is that my wife and I currently have more than $50,000 in debt, not counting our home, and about $10,000 of that is in collections. We’re trying to fix our finances and start saving money, but we just don’t feel like we should take a trip right now. How do I tell my boss? RICKY DEAR RICKY, First, let me say how proud I am of you and your wife. Most people would be really irresponsible in a position like this and simply borrow more money to take the trip. The fact that you’re behaving like mature adults tells me you’re on your way to getting out of debt and solving your financial problems. I’ve got to wonder, is there a lot of pressure from your company to go on this trip? I understand the benefits of team building and socializing with colleagues, but
when you have no savings and are that deep in debt — and a chunk of that includes some in collections — it’s no lie to say you can’t afford to go. A decent company will understand. Just sit down with your boss or owner, and explain why you can’t make it happen right now. You don’t have to unload all the details, but let them know that you can’t do something like this in good conscience when you’re trying to get your finances under control and already owe a lot of money. That’s one heck of a temptation you’re standing up to, Ricky. I love that you and your wife are on the same page and have made the decision to take control of your finances together! —DAVE
HE SET YOU UP DEAR DAVE, I’m a senior in high school, and I have a job after classes and on weekends. I made a down payment of $2,500 on a $7,500 motorcycle last week, because I always wanted to have one before I got out in the real world and had bills and other responsibilities to think about. I asked my dad if that was a smart move, and he said I should ask you. So, what do you think? Should I go ahead with the purchase? TAD DEAR TAD, I’m glad you’re working and learning the value of money and having a job. But I think your dad
set you up on this one. I’ve got a feeling he knew what I’d say, and he wanted you to hear it from me. I teach people how to stay out of debt and build wealth. And there’s always one thing I remind folks of when it comes to buying anything — if you can’t afford to pay cash for the whole thing, then you can’t afford it. The only thing I back off on is when it comes to buying a house.
I love shiny things that go fast, and so do a lot of people who work here at my office. Right now, there are about six or seven motorcycles sitting in our parking lot, and they’re owned by folks who make good money. And the bikes sitting out there probably range in value from about $1,000 to $10,000. But you know what? Whoever rode in on the $1,000 bike had just as much fun as the one who owns the $10,000 bike. A motorcycle is a toy, and you should always pay cash for toys if you want to be wealthy one day. Having lots of payments and
handing your paychecks over to the bank is not the way to build wealth. I would advise talking to the guy at the bike shop to see if you can rework this deal for a ride you can actually afford! —DAVE Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions.
