Chicago known for Capone, but IL gangsters had much wider reach BY BARBARA VITELLO OF THE DAILY HERALD When it came to organized crime in Illinois, Chicago-based Prohibition-era gangsters loomed large during the 1920s and 1930s. Al Capone, Frank Nitti, Lester “Baby Face Nelson” Gillis, Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn and George “Bugs” Moran earned international infamy that persisted for decades after their deaths. For years, the general perception was that when world travelers informed locals they hailed from Chicago, the locals responded with “bang, bang” and a finger-gun gesture. The combination of enterprising criminals, complicit public officials and Prohibition gave rise to crime syndicates involved in bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, extortion and murder. Organized by ethnicity and geography, the syndicates were known as the Chicago Mob or the Outfit. They produced the likes of Capone, Nelson and Moran — Capone’s rival and the target of an attempted assassination in 1929 known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, which claimed the lives of seven men, including Moran associates and an innocent bystander or two. But Chicago wasn’t Illinois’ only hotbed of criminal activity. Southern Illinois was home to Russia-born gangster Charlie Birger, who was involved in gambling and bootlegging in Saline, Williamson and Franklin counties. According to historians, Birger’s onetime partners-in-crime were the Shelton Brothers, leaders of another southern Illinois Outfit. Eventually Birger split from The Shelton Gang, leading to bloody territorial disputes that rivaled Chicago’s early mob wars. Rock Island had its own version of Capone in Ottawa native and onetime lawyer turned crime kingpin John Patrick Looney, whose life inspired the graphic novel “Road to Perdition.” It was turned into a 2002 movie that starred Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, who played the gangster based on Looney.

“BABY FACE” AND DILLINGER Chicago-born Gillis — whose youthful appearance earned him the nickname “Baby Face” — embraced the criminal life early, garnering convictions for auto theft as a teenager. Imprisoned for a 1931 bank robbery, he was set to stand trial for a second bank robbery in Wheaton in 1932, but escaped from the guards who were transporting him to the Illinois State Penitentiary in Joliet, according to the FBI. Several years later, Gillis joined the Indiana gangster and bank robber John Dillinger. Gillis, Dillinger and Homer Van Meter were involved in a June 1934 bank robbery in South Bend, Indiana, where a police officer was killed. About a month later, on July 22, 1934, police and FBI agents confronted Dillinger as he exited Chicago’s Biograph Theater. Dillinger ran to a nearby alley, where he was killed in a shootout. Several months later, on Nov. 27, 1934, in what is now Langendorf Park in Barrington, FBI agents Samuel P. Cowley and Herman Edward Hollis encountered Gillis and fellow gangster John Paul Chase in a stolen vehicle. Hollis was killed during the ensuing gun battle. Cowley died from his wounds the next day. Chase and the seriously injured Gillis fled in the agents’ car. Gillis’ body was found the next day near a Skokie cemetery. THE TOUHYS VS. CAPONE The son of a Chicago policeman, Roger Touhy was the youngest of six brothers, five of whom embraced lives of crime. Touhy and two of his brothers operated a Des Plaines trucking company. At the start of Prohibition, they began a bootlegging operation in the northwest suburbs and later expanded into illegal gambling. Capone, who had been buying illegal beer from the Touhys, tried to take over their operation in 1929. Over the next few years, battles between the rivals took place in then-rural Cook County, including what is now Inverness. Capone twice framed Touhy for kidnap-

ping. Touhy was eventually convicted of kidnapping the brother of cosmetics mogul Max Factor Sr. in 1933 and sentenced to 99 years. In 1954, a federal judge determined the kidnapping was a hoax. Touhy, who served additional time for his 1942 escape from Stateville Correctional Center, was released in November 1959. A month later, he and his bodyguard were gunned down. His killers were never caught. SENT TO THE GALLOWS In November 1926, according to historians, Birger ordered the murder of West City Mayor Joseph Adams, who was reportedly connected to the Sheltons. That attempt failed, but a second attempt a month later succeeded. Convicted of his involvement in Adams’ murder, Birger was hanged in 1928. The jail where he was held, as well as the gallows, are now the Franklin County Jail Museum in Benton. The Shelton Gang was led by brothers Carl, Earl and Bernie, Wayne County siblings who started out making moonshine and graduated to bootlegging and gambling. A 1926 power struggle over southern Illinois bootlegging operations between Birger and the brothers led to a mob war notable for the combatants’ use of homemade tanks. Ultimately, Birger’s testimony helped send the brothers to prison for robbery. After they were released from prison, the brothers attempted to regain control of their criminal operation, which was then headed by former fellow gang member Frank L. “Buster” Wortman, who went on to dominate illegal gambling in the region. Wortman reportedly ordered the murders of Carl and Bernie Shelton. Earl Shelton survived several assassination attempts and died in Florida at age 96.

Niles hosts Halloween parade BY JEN SHEA Niles residents of all ages took to the streets on Saturday, October 27 for the annual Niles Halloween parade. The Notre Dame College Prep marching band joined them as they strolled the streets of Niles decked out in Halloween costumes. “It’s fun, there are snacks and treats,” said Christina Carrabotta, a teacher who marched in the parade with her 2-year-old son. “I like that there’s a band. It gives it that parade feel.” Carrabotta went to the after party last year. This was her first year taking part in the parade, and she said she was impressed. “I like that the kids are all out in their costumes enjoying the good weather,” Laura Gallego said. She attended the parade with her grandkids, ages five and three. “They were very excited” to join the parade, she said. The parade route began at Oak Park and ran to Grennan

Heights Park several blocks away. Recreation Program Supervisor Robin Brey said they usually have over 200 children participating in the event. “It’s a community event; the children enjoy marching, they can dress in their costumes,” Brey said. “It’s an extremely popular event.” The after party at Grennan Heights Park featured games, a magic show, pumpkin decorating and a petting zoo with goats, ducks, geese, chickens, sheep, a donkey and a llama. “We’ve been coming since they were babies,” said Christina Ballarino, an accountant who

attended the parade with her 9-year-old daughter and friend. “I grew up here in Niles, so it’s been a yearly tradition.” Veterinary technician Kelly Herrera marched with her husband and 5-year-old son. “We’ve lived in the neighborhood for five years,” she said, gesturing at her son, “He wanted to dress up.” As the parade tapered off into Grennan Heights Park, Julia Depasquale pushed her grinning 15-month-old daughter, Charlie, up to the park in a stroller. “This is our first time,” Depasquale said. “My favorite part is all the scary costumes.”

Maine South, Notre Dame win playoff openers BY DRAKE SKLEBA For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com

Maine South High School has won six IHSA State Football Championships during the 44year IHSA State Football Tournament series, which began in 1974. The first two state football championships 1995 and 2000, came under the tutelage of the venerable Phil Hopkins. In 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2016, under the legendary and current Maine South head coach Dave Inserra followed three consecutive second-place Hawk finishes, between 2003-2005. The drive for state tournament championship No. 7 began in style at Wilson Field Friday night. Senior Hawk quarterback Cole Dow completed 16 of his 21 passing attempts for a career-best 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hawks to a 55-14 demolition of Huntley (6-4). The Class 8A first-round game at Wilson Field was a completegame effort put in by the entire Hawk team. The area leader in pass receiving yardage, Hawk junior wide receiver Danny Lazic hauled in four of Dow’s tosses for 63 yards including a 30-yard scoring strike in the second quarter. Lazic put on a show as a punt and kickoff-returner, repeatedly giving the Hawks great field position with over 130 yards, in return yardage Lazic added 36 yards rushing on four carries. “We just take thing one game at a time,” Lazic said, “We took our first step tonight. Jimmy’s (Nuzzo) pick and return was amazing. It really gave us the momentum to go on to the victory. I’m really happy with my performance and the entire teams’ performance. The O line was outstanding and Cole (Dow) played a great game for us” Fellow junior receiver Ryan Kilburg had six receptions for 119 yards and a 39-yard touchdown

catch to give the Hawks a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Kilburg, who also anchors the Hawks’, defensive secondary and the entire Hawk defense, held a Huntley team that came into the game averaging 38 points-pergame, to 120 yards of total offense and no touchdowns. Kilburg, Danny Wolf, Jimmy Bartell, Luke Preston, Sean Kelly, Jon Halvorsen, Dylan Harris and Jimmy Nuzzo created havoc for the Red Raider offense all night. “Jimmy came up big,” Kilburg said. “Our defense had a lot of energy early. I thought we were unbelievable on defense, tonight. We had our coverages down. Our coaches, certainly had us well prepared for Huntley. Cole threw the ball well and our coaches made great play calls, which help me make the catches. Waubonsie Valley, next week in Aurora. Sounds good.” Hawk leading rusher, running back/linebacker, Danny Wolf, scored two touchdowns and broke the century mark with 108 rushing yards, on just nine carries. Junior Sean Hayes hauled in the third Dow touchdown pass from four yards out to give the Hawks a 34-7 lead at the half. Wolf would score his second touchdown on a 16-yard jaunt into the end zone to give the Hawks a 41-7 lead with 8:18 in the third quarter. “We really went out tonight and played well against a good Huntley team.” Wolf said. “Jimmy’s pick really gave us the momentum tonight. I did pretty good tonight, running the ball. A lot of holes for me. The O line was outstanding. Should be interesting next week at Waubonsie Valley” Junior running back Nate Smith, scored from 13-yards out to initiate the 40-point running clock, giving the Hawks a 48-7 lead, midway through the third quarter. The Hawks first-teamers on the side-line went into a frenzy, watching sophomore Joey Del-

lumo’s, electrifying 32-yard touchdown run to make the score 55-7. Huntley would score late in the fourth quarter. It’s really hard to believe that in 55-14 Hawk victory, that the play of the game, was made in the first four minutes, of the contest. Huntley forced a three-and-out on the Hawks’ first possession of the game,on crushing hits. The Red Raiders clearly had the early momentum. Enter Hawk defensive back, Jimmy Nuzzo. Red Raider quarterback, Chris Raffin (9-for-21,116 yards, INT) fired a pass in the direction of his favorite receiver Mike Boland (4 catches 50 yards). The pass was tipped and Nuzzo grabbed the ball at the Hawk 35. Sixty-twoyards later, Nuzzo, was tackled at the Red Raider 3. On third down, Dow (9 carries, 51 yards, TD), would waltz in from the one. Hawk junior offensive tackle, Pete Skoronski and friends, the Hawk line, Sean Kelly, Nick Kamezis, Billy Coyne, Alex Pavlov and Nick DiVito, opened the way for an better-than 500-yard night, for the offense. “The past few weeks I have been trying to improve each week, running our offense,” Dow said. “Tonight, I really feel I accomplished that and did a good job leading, our attack. It was crazy how great the offensive line blocked. Our receivers were making great catches, all night. Just a great offensive performance tonight.” Hawk sophomore Clay Cichowski was promoted to the varsity in Week 6 and again for the playoffs, joining Skoronski and Inserra, on the 2018 Maine South varsity football team. Thus, completing the 62-years in the making story, of the trio, being teammates at Maine South, just as their grandfathers were at Indiana University, in 1953-1956. Up next for Maine South (9-1), is a Class 8A Second-Round game at Waubonsie Valley (8-2) in Aurora,

Notre Dame advanced to the second round of the postseason.

next weekend. The Warriors flew past Bolingbrook 38-21,for their first-round win, in Bolingbrook on Friday. “That was a huge play by Jimmy Nuzzo, to get that interception and the 62-yard return, in the first four minutes of the game” Inserra said. “That really juiced us up and got us rolling. The defense was “lights out” all night and we really executed, on the offensive side of the ball. “I thought another key to the victory, was after they returned the kickoff back 99-yards, to pull within 20-7, we responded. A 92yard, 15 play, six minute drive, to go back up 27-7 was huge. Cole (Dow), was outstanding for us tonight and the entire offense executed our game plan very well. Our defense totally took away everything Huntley’s offense, could do.

“Waubonsie Valley, has always been a well-coached, disciplined team. They run a different offense and defensive schemes than what we have seen. We have to study and work very hard in practice and learn how to execute against them, next week.” • Notre Dame snapped its string of three straight first-round playoff losses when it defeated St. Ignatius 14-7 Saturday night. Senior Ty Gavin, who returned from an injury that saw him miss the regular-season finale, had only 13 carries on the game but only one mattered. Gavin scored the game-winning touchdown on a 90-yard run to give the Dons the win. Gavin finished with 141 yards. Notre Dame moves to 8-2 and will now travel to Crystal Lake South (6-4) for a 7 p.m. Saturday kickoff in Crystal Lake.

Follow steps to achieve financial peace Dear Dave, Do you think I should lower the amount I’m contributing to my 401(k) so I can pay off my house and my truck? - Jamie Dear Jamie, If you’re following my plan, the first thing you should do is set aside a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. That’s Baby Step 1. Next comes Baby Step 2, which means paying off all your debt except for your house. This would include your car. During this time, you should temporarily stop any kind of investing and retirement contributions. Once your mortgage is the only debt you have left, it’s on to Baby Step 3. This means you start saving money and growing your beginner emergency fund into a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. When that’s done, you can attack Baby Step 4 — investing 15 percent of your pre-tax income for retirement. In your case, that would mean restarting the contributions to your 401(k). The rest of the plan goes like this. Baby Step 5 is putting money into your kids’ college funds, if you have kids, while Baby Step 6 is putting everything you can scrape together towards paying off the house early. After that comes the real fun. Baby

Step 7 is the point where you build wealth and give like crazy. It may take a little time in some cases, but following these steps will lead you to financial peace! —Dave Dear Dave, I just accepted my first job in sales. In your mind, what is the key to becoming an excellent salesperson? Bobbie

Dear Bobbie, The key to becoming a great salesperson can be summed up in one simple word — serving. I’m not talking about being subservient. I’m talking about always giving 110 percent towards ensuring customers and potential customers are served well. It’s all about being proactive. Serving means you believe in what you represent, and you’re excited about what you have to offer. It means you’re determined to give people a great experience. If an issue happens to arise, you’ll take care of it quickly and completely. You’ll do this in a way that will make them forget it ever happened. Really, serving is an attitude. You can pressure people if you want, but that’s going to lead to a dull and frustrating life of one-shot deals.
