Niles Grows Farm On Franks Village dedicates first-ever community garden The village of Niles recently held a dedication ceremony at the site if its first community garden, Farm on Franks.

Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo, sponsors and volunteers planted garlic as the first vegetable to be grown at Farm on Franks, located

on the east side of Franks Avenue just south of the Niles Public Services building.

Village employee Katy Darr described the application process to the crowd gathered at the garden. Applications will be accepted Jan. 3 to Feb. 28, and the garden will open for planting in April.

“We are pleased to open the first community garden within the village of Niles,” Darr said.

“This garden will help build community, promote outdoor activity and benefit our very own Niles

Food Pantry. We look forward to working shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors next spring.”

The village said it was able to secure almost $15,000 in grants, donations and in kind materials, as well as numerous volunteer hours. With this funding, the project is projected to be completed at a 95 percent funding level.

The Niles Police Department is reminding parents of its recommended hours for safe trickor-treating this year.

The recommended times for trick-or-treating are 3 to 8 p.m.

Oct. 31, but the department added that the times are only a suggestion. Each parent or guardian should consider what is best for their individual child.

Additionally, the department offered parents and children Halloween safety tips.

Parents should make sure children under 12 trick-ortreating with a parent or other trusted adult. Children should given a flashlight or glow stick while out, and add reflective tape to their costumes to make them more visible to motorists. Parents or an older sibling should accompany young trickor-treaters, and warn their children not to enter anyone’s home without parental permission.

For concerns about sex offenders in Niles, consult the Illinois Sex Offender Registration at www.isp.state.il.us/sor. As a reminder, Illinois Law prohibits

registered sex offenders from participating in any holiday event involving children, including Halloween.

Trick-or-treaters should use makeup instead of a mask, so as not to obstruct their view, and police recommend making a trick-or-treat route map for children.

Drivers are also urged to slow down and watch for children, especially while backing out of driveways or making turns. If driving children to a Halloween event, let them enter and exit the car only from the curb side of the vehicle.

Make sure kids look in all directions first before crossing a street and cross only at corners.

Remind them to use sidewalks or walk facing traffic so approaching cars can be seen.

Additionally, parents should caution children against crossing the street between parked cars, where drivers can’t see them.

For trick-or-treaters, stay in neighborhoods you know well and only go to houses with exterior lights and only accept candy at the door and never go inside.

Lastly, children should not to eat any goodies until they have been inspected by a trusted adult. When in doubt, throw it out, the department says.

District expects rec center renovations to wrap Nov. 1

Des Plaines man claimed he was robbed at gunpoint near Austin and Beckwith

Improvements at Dee Park are proceeding nicely, according to Golf Maine Park District Executive Director John Jekot. The Dee Park Recreation Center Renovation project is expected to cost around $300,000 and has an expected completion date of Nov. 1. Dee Park is located at Dee and Emerson roads in unincorporated Maine Township.

“The board and staff of the park district are excited to have these improvements underway and look forward to having our residents enjoy the results of this project,” Jekot said.

The project was awarded to McHenry-based Orbis Construction. The project will be paid for using bond money that was approved by the park board in 2013.

No grant money is being used for this project, Jekot said.

The scope includes exterior site improvements to control flooding, office and multipurpose room renovations, garage gutters and downspout installation, improve-

ments to the east entrance, and replacement of an HVAC unit in the west foyer. Plans for the multipurpose room include creating a space for children’s birthday parties with themes that are currently being developed by park staff and will be rolled out at the start of the new year.

Jekot added that further improvements to the grounds and outdoor facilities are pending.

The Morton Grove Police Department charged a 26-year-old Des Plaines man with disorderly conduct, after reporting Oct. 21 that he was robbed at gunpoint near Austin and Beckwith.

Kasif Motiwala, of the 9100 Block of Delphia in Des Plaines, reported that two male subjects approached him while he was in his vehicle at a stop sign.

Motiwala stated that the two subjects pointed guns at him and took $4,500 from

him before they ran north on the bike trails.

Police say he then came into the Morton Grove Police Department to make a report, after which officers immediately set up a perimeter in the area surrounding Austin and Beckwith.

Surrounding agencies were notified that the two armed subjects had entered the trails, and descriptions provided by Motiwala were also given out.

Ultimately, investigators from the Morton Grove Police Department interviewed Motiwala further and said he admit he made the incident up so he could keep money belonging to a family member. Motiwala was charged with a felony.

Study the fine print before choosing a Medicare option Medicare continues to be a popular healthcare option, but there are coverage gaps by trUDy lIEbErMaN RuRAl HeAltH NeWS SeRVIce Get ready to make some decisions.

Medicare open enrollment begins October 15 and runs through early December. It’s the time when seniors and disabled people can switch plans to cover gaps in Medicare’s coverage.

Medicare continues to be one of the country’s most popular social programs, but there are coverage gaps.

The program is complicated and often misunderstood, and those already on Medicare and those about to be should think hard about their options. It’s a time to beware of falling for sales pitches like the ones I received this year.

One mailing from a New York City hospital told me if I signed up for its “unique” Medicare Advantage plan, I could save money if I used the hospital system’s doctors particularly its “preferred” physicians. It noted that not all doctors who are part of its system were preferred providers and to check when making an appointment. It offered no clue about what preferred meant.

Often glossed over at these insurance-sponsored kaffeklatches are the essential differences between the two options for covering Medicare’s gaps.

Increasingly new seniors coming onto the program don’t know what those are.

These days insurers covering em-

ployees while they are working are allowed to automatically enroll them in an MA plan when they become eligible for Medicare. The insurer, using what’s called a “seamless conversion,” sends a letter to the workers explaining the new coverage, which takes effect unless they opt out within 60 days. It’s easy to overlook the notice.

Essentially, a consumer’s choice is between enrolling in traditional Medicare and buying a supplemental insurance plan called a Medigap or enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan (MA) offered by private insurers. About one-third of Medicare beneficiaries now have MA plans largely because the government has paid insurers more about two percent more - than it costs to provide the same benefits under the traditional program.

Those overpayments have allowed MA plans to offer extra benefits like eyeglasses and dental exams that are not part of traditional Medicare’s benefit package.

In some areas the higher government payments have made it possible to offer consumers MA plans with no monthly premiums, an attraction for cash-strapped seniors.

Premiums for Medigap policies are often higher, but people who have traditional Medicare and a Medigap policy face no restrictions on what doctors they can use. MA plans require seniors See HEaltH PAge 10

Volunteers, sponsors make electronics recycling event a success DEar EDItor, The electronics recycling event held on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Park Ridge Public Works Center unloaded a record 468 vehicles.

The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, the city of Park Ridge and the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County worked together to put on this community event so residents could get rid of the unwanted electronics, textiles and documents.

A huge thank you to city employee Mike McGrath, who continues to oversee the entire event each year.

To pull off a community event this size, volunteers from all over the community are needed, and we couldn’t have done it without all these volunteers: Park Ridge Citizens Patrol, Park Ridge Chamber members, Maine South High School students, Maine East High School students, Notre Dame High School students, Boy Scouts Troop 1, Park Ridge Kiwanis, St. Paul of the Cross youth group, One-Brick and Citizens Emergency Response Team.

Notre Dame, Maine South set to compete in IHSA second season When the IHSA playoffs were announced last weekend, six Voyager Media area teams locked in spots to compete for a state title.

Oakton golfers headed to NJCAA championships Oakton Community College freshmen golfers Stephen Bukielski (Schaumburg High School) and Chris Blaha (Conant High School) will be doing more than working on their tans when they head to Mesa, Arizona, to compete in the 2017 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men’s Golf Championship at the Longbow Golf Course May 23-26.

The Owls golfers qualified for nationals with their performances at the NJCAA Region IV Regional Tournament at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby

Oct. 6-8. Bukielski and Blaha competed against 50 other golfers from 11 area colleges in the 54-hole competition. Bukielski placed third overall, shooting 225, and Blaha finished eighth with his score of 231. Both Owls golfers were named to the NJCAA Region IV All-Region First Team.

The top 15 golfers qualified for the national championship.

The difference this season is that the Tigers have more than just game film on the Panthers, because they played them earlier in the season.

With Joliet West making the move this season to the Southwest Prairie Conference, the teams met in week three of the season with Oswego pulling out a 7-3 win over West.

St. Charles East does boast the second best point differentials in the Class 8A field, outscoring its regular season opponents by

Homewood-Flossmoor was the best in the class at 32.4.

The Saints’ offense tallied 41.6 points, while the defense was stingy in allowing only 11.6.

For Lockport, the offense scored 21.1 points per game, while the defense allowed 18.8 – a 2.3 point per game difference – the third lowest in Class 8A. Only Waubonsie Valley (0.2) and Evanston (-1.1) were below Lockport.

There are some short- and longterm goals to think about in a situation like this, but let’s look at the immediate future.

During open enrollment people already covered by a Medicare Advantage plan can choose a different MA plan. Seniors enrolled in traditional Medicare with a Medigap can also switch to an MA plan. But later on if they don’t like their MA plan, their options are limited.

Norwood client celebrates ‘Thanks For The Memories’ fashion 110th birthday show set for Nov. 5 Norwood crossing art exhibit to open the same day Norwood Crossing residents are inviting those who like to reminisce to attend their Fall Fashion Show that expresses the theme, “Thanks for the Memories,” during their presentation of creative attire.

Amid a runway, musical accompaniment and glittering lights, the program will begin at 3 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Norwegian Heritage Room at Norwood Crossing, 6016-20 N. Nina Ave. in Chicago.

The fashion show is coordinated by the Expressive Arts Therapy department, which consists of music therapist Jes-

sica Georgi, art therapist Katie Reagan and dance/movement therapist Joan Lin. The Norwood Life Society Thrift shop is responsible for donating the majority of the outfits and accessories that will be worn by residents during the show.

Afterward, stroll through the first and lower floors of Norwood Crossing to view the artwork on walls and in cabinets created by residents during their Fall Art Exhibit, which opens following the fashion presentation.

Many of the artists will be present to discuss their works.

Refreshments will be served during the reception in the Wellness Center. The artwork, which is an outgrowth of Expressive Art Therapy group sessions and Life Enrichment groups, will be displayed through Jan. 31.

There is no denying that any birthday over 100 is a big deal.

As Louise Schaaf recently prepared to celebrate her 110th birthday, she reflected on a life that included arriving in the U.S. from Germany in 1928; marrying her husband, Erwin, in 1931; moving from Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood to the city’s far northwest side in 1959; and enjoying annual family gatherings. Schaaf was recently joined at her home for a pre-birthday get-together with her daughter, Ruth Arend, and son, Henry Schaaf, as well as Libby Davis Ervin, executive director of Norwood Seniors Network. The seniors network provides Schaaf with caregiving assistance.

Each year, family and friends gather for Schaaf’s birthday, which includes her two children, six
