VILLAGE OF MORTON GROVE

VILLAGE OF SKOKIE

Please respect the privacy of homeowners and do not ring doorbells before or after this period. If the outside house light is not on, do not disturb the homeowner by ringing the doorbell.

The Village of Skokie has set Halloween trick-or-treat hours from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 31.

FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS AND PARENTS: • Accompany all young children while trick-or-treating.

•

Older participants should travel in groups and avoid traveling alone. Stick to neighborhoods you are familiar with. Closely inspect all candy before eating. Check labels closely for potential allergens. Avoid homemade treats given out by strangers.

Remind children to walk, not run, between houses and use sidewalks when available. Use caution when crossing the street and cross only at intersections when traffic is clear. Wear brightly colored costumes or add reflective tape to costumes for visibility. Carry a flashlight.

RESIDENTS: • Motorists should be careful and alert during and around these hours. • Use battery powered candles to light your jack-o’-lantern and other decorations. • Leave walk-ways and paths to homes clear and well-lit to avoid trip hazards. • Leave on a porch or exterior lights if you plan to participate in trick-or-treating.

DAVE SAYS

Pay off your car loan with cash if you can Dear Dave: I can’t decide what to do about my car. I owe $8,000 on it, and I have the cash to pay it off with plenty left over. One of my co-workers said I shouldn’t pay it off, because I have a very low interest rate on the loan. What do you think? — Derricka Dear Derricka: What do I think? I think your co-worker is broke. Taking financial advice from broke people is like taking dieting advice from fat people. In other words, it’s dumb. Pay off your car, and never borrow money to buy a car again for the rest of your life. If you want to win with money, you have to get out of the land of car payments. The idea that you’re stuck with car payments — that you’re always going to have one — is the mantra of those who’ve given up hope. You are in charge of your life. You are in charge of your financial situation. Don’t be like all those folks out there who whine about stuff like stagnant wages and are unwilling to get up off their stagnant butts to make their lives better. Derricka, pay off your car today. And please, don’t take any more financial advice from broke people. — Dave

FOOTBALL

PLAYOFF

TIME

Notre Dame, Maine South start a run to Champaign as football playoffs open this weekend

BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

It is a new season for 256 football teams across the state of Illinois and a pair of teams from the Voyager Media Coverage area are in the mix. Despite a 33-17 loss at home to wrap up the regular season, Notre Dame (7-2) will head into Class 6A as the No. 6 seed in the top 16-team bracket and will host No. 11 St. Ignatius (6-3) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. “We are 7-2 and we are pretty happy with that, but being 8-1 would have been better,” Notre Dame coach Mike Hennessey said We are in and we are very happy. “[In the ESCC] every week you are getting a battle and we feel good about what we have done.” The Dons are making their 19th trip to the IHSA playoffs and the sixth consecutive, while St. Ignatius is only in the postseason for the third time ever and the first since the 2015 season. The Wolfpack have never won a playoff game. The question looming for Notre Dame is will it have the services of defending East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year Ty Gavin, who sat out with an ankle injury in the loss to the Hilltoppers.

“I think he will be back,” Notre Dame coach Mike Hennessey said after Friday night’s game. “It wasn’t a matter of resting him, he could not play.” Gavin has helped teh Dons average 32.3 points per game on offense and as a defensive back has also helped it allow only 12 per contest - a differential of 20.3. St. Ignatius scored 27.1 points per game and allowed 10.9. If the seeds hold, Notre Dame would get No. 3 Kenwood (8-1) who will host No. 14 Crystal Lake South (5-4). The game would be at Gately Stadium in Chicago. In Class 8A, Maine South will look to make another trip to Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign. At 8-1, Maine South is a No. 6 seed in the bracket and will host No. 27 Huntley at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Hawks are making their 28th consecutive trip to the playoffs, second in 8A only to Stevenson who is in for the 31st straight time. Maine South has a 66-27 playoff record and nine state trophies, including six state titles, the most of any team in 8A. Huntley is in the playoffs for the 10th time overall and sixth consecutive. On the season, Huntley has

scored an average of 35.2 points per game, while allowing 22.4. Maine South has scored 34.9,

but allowed only 13.4. If the seeds hold, Maine South would host No. 11 Bolingbrook

next week. The Raiders host No. 22 Waubonsie Valley in round one.

Saukenuk was well-known as one of the largest Native American villages in North America, but one of its residents, the warrior Black Hawk, was even better known. Although born in Saukenuk, which was located where Rock Island stands today, his father Pyesa and mother Summer Rain and other relatives could trace their ancestry back thousands of years. According to their oral traditions, both the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes were living in Canada 12,000 years ago at the time of the last glacial retreat. Many centuries later they were displaced from their Canadian home by the Iroquois. The Sauk and Meskwaki migrated through New England and New York to the area near Niagara Falls. By 1640, the Meskwaki had settled at the west end of Lake Erie, near present-day Detroit, and the Sauk near Saginaw Bay in Michigan. In 1701, the decades-long war began between the French and the Meskwaki, which almost led to the tribe’s extinction. Weakened, they joined the Sauk and together they migrated to the Mississippi River, where for nearly 100 years the tribes lived in their own villages and farmed, hunted and traded. The two tribes were separate nations. The Meskwaki were the smaller of the two, numbering about 1,600. In Rock Island, the Meskwaki had a village located

across from Arsenal Island in what is now downtown Rock Island. In the days before the locks and dams, the river was 17 feet lower than today. Fort Armstrong loomed 30 feet above the river, according to Beth Carvey, retired historian at the Black Hawk State Historic Site. Over the years, the Sauk had several cities called Saukenuk. In 1808, the decision was made by the Sauk nation to consolidate smaller villages into the city now known as Saukenuk, located near the Rock River in Rock Island. Its location is near the Black Hawk State Historic Site, home to the John Hauberg Indian Museum which commemorates the lifestyle of those who lived at Saukenuk. According to Ferrell Anderson, a local archaeologist, the Meskwaki village was made up of two rows of huts – about 30 total – located where downtown Rock Island is today. In 1824, Thomas Forsyth, the Indian agent at Rock Island, wrote a report detailing the Indian villages within his jurisdiction. Two miles up from the mouth of the Rock River was the “grand Sauk village where the principal chiefs, braves and warriors reside, ... and where all the affairs pertaining to the Sauk Nation of Indians were transacted,” Forsyth wrote. “Indeed, I have seen many Indian villages, but I never saw such a large one or such a populous one.” Behind the town, on the side of the ridge, were the Sauk gardens which Black Hawk indicated extended about 2 miles. Forsyth estimated the Sauk had about 800 acres under cultivation. Saukenuk had a north-south and an east-west esplanade that formed a “T.”

The east-west road was defined by the river and the bluffs. It intersected with a longer northsouth avenue that was lined with many lodges. At one end was a gathering area and the council lodge. We know there were as many as 100 or more lodges at one point, and Saukenuk was home to as many as 6,000 – perhaps more. For most of the years that the Sauk and Meskwaki lived on these lands, their life was an idyllic one. They lived peacefully in their villages with occasional skirmishes with other Indian tribes. They traded with the French and fought alongside the British, providing a lifestyle that was partially Indian and partially European. The Sauk lived what might be described as an affluent lifestyle by Indian standards. Many of the Sauk dressed in European clothes and hunted with rifles. When they did use arrows, they had metal tips, not stone. Their village on the shore of the Rock River was a thriving metropolis during the summer. In fall, crops from their farms were stored in food pits and they crossed the river and wintered in southern Iowa and Missouri – returning to Saukenuk in the spring. Unknowingly, the end of this lifestyle had been assured in 1804 when a few chiefs – possibly plied with alcohol – signed a treaty in St. Louis in which they agreed to move west of the Mississippi River in exchange for $1,000 a year, at such time as settlers arrived seeking to live on the land.
