Theater to perform ‘Technicolor Dreamcoat’ spotlight youth theater to perform Andrew lloyd webber classic

By JeNNIfer ScHNeIder From the musical genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice comes the Old Testament tale of Joseph and his 11 brothers.

A favored child among his brothers, Joseph’s dreams take him from lowly slave to ruler of Egypt. Along the way he encounters imprisoned members of the royal court, the Elvis-like Pharaoh, and a chance to show forgiveness to his brothers. Performances run Oct. 27 to Nov. 6 at the Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker St., Des Plaines.

Family is a key theme for Spotlight’s latest production, both onstage and off.

Jason Schmidt plays Joseph, and his sister, Amanda Schmidt, is the show’s assistant choreographer.

It brings me so much joy to see him on stage. I feel it’s a passion we have in common, and makes it more meaningful when we do a show together and get to work on it together.”

Jason said his sister supports him in everything he does.

“She is good at letting me know when I need to fix something in a positive way,” he said.

Jason and Amanda have both been a part of the Spotlight theater community for many years, and both say that they have made some of their best friends and greatest memories as Spotlight performers.

“Spotlight has been a safe haven for me for my entire life,” Jason said. “It is the thing I look forward to every single week. It has really developed into my passion.”

Amanda agreed.

“I was never really someone who cared a lot if I was the lead,” she said. “The best part was doing it with my friends and being able to express myself through dance. And now, I love to mentor and teach the younger generation.”

Many of Spotlight’s performers and crew are families that work together. Parent volunteers make a great deal of the production come to life. From costumes, tech, refreshments, green room and house assistance, families of the students in the show do it all.

Community Garage Sale shines in 11th year with nearly 80 vendors, shoppers had plenty of unique bargains

Maine Township recently hosted its 11th annual Community Garage Sale, and the event’s organizers said it was another successful event.

With nearly 80 vendors, shoppers had plenty of unique bargains from which to choose.

Proceeds from the sale of vendor spots and sponsorships will benefit MaineStay Youth and Family Services’ Adventure Camp for at-risk youth and the township’s emergency food pantry.

The event was held outside of the Maine Township Town Hall, 1700 Ballard Road in Park Ridge.

The story of Joseph is a familiar one. Lloyd Webber’s music and Tim Rice’s lyrics bring Joseph’s family and his famous coat to life.

Forgiveness is a key element to the story. After everything that is done to Joseph, he still forgives his brothers.

“I love that it is the telling of a Bible story in a fun and joyous way that people can relate to,” Giromini added. “I love the idea of people coming to the theater and leaving with smiles on their faces and joy in their hearts.”

Amanda said she and her brother grew up listening to the musical.

“It is our mom’s favorite musical, so it is especially meaningful to me to do this with him,” she said.

Excellent vocals and production values have come to be expected from Spotlight, which stages three

full musicals a year at the Prairie Lakes Theater. After an exceptional production of “Les Miserables” last fall, Spotlight promises that “Joseph” will be just as good.

“Our performances are unique in that we expect so much out of these young people,” Giromini said. “But when you come and experience the production, you are so surprised that it is all children age 8 to 18. Our youth are capable of great things.”

And, Giromini added that Spotlight productions are also great theater experiences for the whole family.

“You don’t have to drive all the way into the city; you’ve got a nice little family oriented theater right here,” she said.

The League of Women Voters of Park Ridge and the American Association of University Women hosted a candidate forum last week for candidates looking to represent the Illinois State Senate

28th District.

About 100 residents attended the event, held Oct. 13 at St. Luke’s Church in Park Ridge.

Laura Murphy and Mel Thillens had the chance to share their views of how on a variety of statewide issues, including taxes, term limits and middle class accountability.

Attendees were also able to submit their questions to the two candidates.

Line between fate & choice there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition

By JaSoN fLorIN bugle coluMNist A basic part of my morning routine involves starting the coffeemaker and then choosing the day’s coffee mug.

The cabinet displays a great variety of sizes, shapes and colors to pick from.

As I scan my options on this particular fall morning, I notice a red and blue emblem peeking through from the back row. I pull it forward and see it’s a Chicago Cubs logo, and this day just happens to be the opening game of the playoffs.

Even though I haven’t used this mug in months, during which time the team has won the most games in baseball on their way to a division title, today it feels like they cannot possibly win unless I choose their mug. I can almost feel the stars aligning as fate draws me to select the cup that will assure the team a victory. So, I succumb to the delusion.

In a classic episode of the TV show “The Office,” boss Michael Scott explains that he is not super-stitious, but he is a little “stitious.” Even if we are rational and level headed in most of our daily encounters, there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition. We cross our fingers for luck, avoid walking under a ladder or

even pump a little extra gas to make sure the last three numbers don’t read 6-6-6.

The concept of superstition is that we believe we can control events that are really outside of our control. These magical beliefs become stronger if the outcome happens to go our way. When the Cubs won their game the night I used that coffee mug, I made sure it was the only thing I drank out of for the rest of the weekend.

On the one hand, this kind of behavior is all in good fun – a harmless way of trying to be part of something bigger. On the other hand, an over-reliance on superstition can turn against us. Instead of focusing on choices that can have a meaningful impact in our lives, we waste energy on what we cannot control. As hard as we might try, we can’t change what others do and think, let alone how the universe will unfold.

The irony of superstition is that our misguided effort at greater control only leads us to have less control in our lives. Numerous research studies suggest that when we believe that we steer our own lives – known as an internal locus of control – we feel better,

perform better and experience greater success. We also take responsibility for our actions, rather than chalking it up to fate or bad luck.

The opposite occurs when we see our lives as a rudderless ship, tossed whichever way the wind and currents decide. This lack of power – known as an external locus of control – is associated with higher rates of depression, lack of self-esteem and lower life satisfaction. These beliefs also lead to stepping back from important life situations, since it feels as if we have no influence over the outcome.

By recognizing that we have choices to make, as well as how important those choices are, we can create a meaningful life. Yet when it comes to the areas we cannot change, it’s equally important to accept that we don’t have total control.

So you can keep the quirky routines that provide a small sense of connectedness, just as long as you don’t take them too seriously. After all, the best way to avoid tempting fate is to take control of it.

P.S. If the Cubs don’t win it all this year, you can’t blame me – I’m still using the same mug.

issues. Partnerships and education are more effective and productive ways to achieve the goals of a soda tax without burdening families and businesses.

As the city of Chicago and Cook County address significant budget shortfalls for fiscal year 2017, a potential soda tax will likely be on the table in budget discussions.

Villages to collect unwanted prescriptions Police partner with deA for 12th national drug take back initiative Police departments in Niles and Morton Grove will partner with the Drug Enforcement Agency for a program designed to prevent pill abuse by taking back potentially dangerous prescription drugs.

Both departments will give residents the opportunity to dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescriptions Oct. 22. Residents can drop off medications at the

Niles Police Department, 7000 W. Touhy Ave., and the Morton Grove Police Department, 6101 Capulina Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

After Maine South saw its 77game Central Suburban South winning streak snapped Oct. 7

by New Trier, there was only one thing Hawks’ coach Dave Inserra preached to his team – move on.

“We got beat in week 7, so we move on,” Inserra said. “In the playoffs if we lose, we go home, In the playoffs, we move on. We have a chance to get better, to keep playing and to keep playing and keep preparing.”

Maine South did move on and qualified for the IHSA playoffs with its fifth win after beating Niles West 55-33 Friday night.

“This was a big team win for us. Obviously we were down last week, but that may have been a blessing in disguise to be honest,” said quarterback Nick Leongas.

“We all came together this week, we prepared really hard in practice and we came out really strong

and it was a great team win.

“The leaders of the team stepped up. We all got the team focused and we had to move on from the last game.”

Maine South struck fast following an attempted onsides kick attempt to open the game.

“We had great field position and my receivers and linemen all made plays and I give them all the credit,” Leongas said. “I give all the credit to my linemen. They make sure I am upright and healthy and my receivers make the plays. I just make the right reads.”

Inserra knew the big plays would be there for South and that they would need to score to outduel a fast-strike Niles West offense.

As the days of October tick away, local volleyball teams prepare for the IHSA playoffs.

All area teams are in the Glenbrook South Sectional complex.

Niles West is the top seed of the local teams as the Wolves hold the No. 5 seed and are in the Maine West Regional. Niles West opens play Tuesday, Oct. 25 against the winner of No. 12 Maine West and No. 21 Taft.

“We were about a tenth of a point away from the fourth seed,” said Wolves’ coach Stacy Metoyer.

“We should have been the 3rd or 4th seed at the lowest due to our record, head to head, and competition. Our goals include winning regionals, and making it to sectionals.”

Maine South is the No. 8 seed and will compete in the Rolling Meadows Regional against No. 9 Rolling Meadows at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Hawks have improved all season and are looking to continue that into the playoffs.

“I feel that the team has improved each and every game,” said first-year coach Allison Groessl. “If we play at our level and everyone is doing their job, we can keep up with really good teams.

“The strengths of our team are our serving and defense. We have a wide variety of serving types among the girls and it helps us against teams that struggle with serve receive. Our defense has really improved, too. We trust each other more on the court that we will be in the right spot at the right time. They know when to dump the volleyball and give all their energy to every single play on the court. Madisen Werdell has done an awesome job coming in and becoming a libero. She has made holes in her jersey because she dives around so much.

Overall we as a team need to focus on getting more kills than errors. If we do that we will be good to go.

Maine East is the No. 11 seed in the Hoffman Estates Regional and will face No. 22 Senn at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24 with the winner playing No. 6 seed Prospect the next day.

Blue Demons coach Kevin Bohn said understands the seed Maine East received.

“We feel we are seeded appropriately,” he said. “We’ve had a pretty successful season and are hoping to continue this trend into the playoffs. We have a play in game Monday night against Senn High School, so we are taking it one game at a time.”

Bohn said the Demons have had success this season, just not in front of some of the big teams.

“We’ve had some big wins, but have also struggled against nonconference teams,” he said.

“In conference, we’ve been solid, but in tournaments we’ve really struggled. For whatever reason, we haven’t played to our potential at both the Demon Invite and Prospect tourney.”

Going forward, however, he is not looking for the Demons to do anything they can’t control.

“We are placing emphasis on things that we can control on the court,” Bohn said. “Communication, timely missed serves, and playing fundamental volleyball for entire matches. We need to make sure we play consistent throughout the match.”

“Going into this season, we

knew our defense would have to be strong because we lack height.

Our back row defensive players are doing a tremendous job keeping balls alive and extending rallies. Our setters also don’t get enough credit for their ability to run an offense and do so while making it look so easy.”

Those setters are Erika Christiansen and Kim Sergey.

“Erika has been one of our setters for the season, and does a great job making smart choices as our setter and improved her ability to run a faster offense.

Her hitting has been very effective, and she has improved her defense and quickness,” he said.

“Kim has been the other setter for our team this season. She has made similar strides as Erika, and both have improved their decision making on the court. She is extremely skilled as a setter, but getting a lot of playing time has increased her level of play.”

Other than the setters, there are other players that have led the way for East.

“Madeline Sielski has played as libero for every game of the season so far, and has been a rock for our defense. From serve receive, to defense, to aggressive serving, she can do it all,” Bohn said.

“Outside hitter Maria has been one of our go to hitters and passers this season. She’s taken on a much larger role from last season, and she’s really stepped up her game as a senior and captain of the team.”

While Maine South was up fast, Niles West coach Scott Baum though the Wolves played better than the score showed early on.

“It was 31-6 at half and I thought it was a little better of a game than that,” he said. “I thought we missed on some opportunities and I was proud of the way we played in the first half. I know the scoreboard never lies, but I don’t know if the scoreboard told the whole story and the same with the final score, I’m not sure if that’s indicative. But, I am proud of how we played. We had a bunch of new

kids step in and they played well and they played hard. But, we have kids on our team that aren’t taking care of their business and that sucks for them, but it is good for the kids who stepped in and did what they had to do.”

While the loss in week seven ended one streak for Maine South, the win most likely extended another, as the Hawks are poised to make the playoffs for the 25thstraight season.

“The main thing was we need to get to the playoffs and five wins gets you there and six makes it a better seed and possibly makes it easier for you,” Inserra said.

Although Niles West is 4-4 and could get to the five win plateau next week with a win over the same New Trier team that ended the Hawks’ streak, Baum doesn’t

see the Wolves having enough playoff points.

West earned only five points from its non-conference opponents and four from the crossover agreement with the MetroSuburban League.

“Point wise, I don’t think we can get in [with five wins],” Baum said.

“The CSL, MSL crossover thing didn’t really do the CSL any justice.”

What Baum is looking forward to now is a final week of preparation and one last game with the senior class.

“This has been an unbelievable group of seniors,” he said. “They are phenomenal. I would sign on for 30 years if I knew we would have seniors like this every year.

We are really looking forward to this season together.”

But when it comes to what you can reasonably afford, I think it becomes relative to exactly how much debt you have and what kind of income we’re talking about.

If you have $5,000 in debt but you make $150,000 a year, stop worrying, pay off your debt, and save up for a great wedding.

If you make $28,000 a year but you have $30,000 in debt, then you need to have a really minimal wedding.

Anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 would be reasonable in that kind of situation — and even then it’s going to be tight.

The more debt you have in relation to your income, the smaller your wedding expenses should be. A $32,000 wedding would be ridiculous for someone with a $28,000 income. But $28,000 is a below-average income, so you shouldn’t reasonably expect an average wedding in terms of cost.

It really all boils down to ratios.

Just remember, Paul, the amount of money spent on the ceremony, reception and all that stuff isn’t what’s important.

It’s the love that two people have for each other that makes the ceremony special and the marriage one that will last a lifetime!
