and struggles of being a parent/ guardian of a child who faces anxiety. In our own community and across the nation, an increasing number of students struggle with anxiety. According to the World Health Organization, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., impacting 54% of females and 46% of males, with age seven being the median age of onset. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering from anxiety receive treatment. In District 64, we recognize and have taken measures to help our students manage their anxiety so that they are able to engage in all that school has to offer. We regularly support our students through individual and group counseling as well as our social emotional learning programs. We would like to further support our families and community by providing information and resources surrounding how to identify and support children experiencing anxiety. Note that this 51-minute movie is rated by its producers as suitable for ages 11 and older. However, due to the intense scenarios depicted, if you are considering having your child attend along with you, please evaluate whether the movie is appropriate based on his or her maturity level and potential benefit from seeing this presentation. Additional information about the film is available at: angstmovie.

Halloween Trickor-Treating in Des Plaines

The City of Des Plaines does not have designated hours for trick-or-treating on Halloween. However, we encourage parents to be aware of the hazards that exist after sunset. If children are trickor-treating at dusk or after dark, chemical glow sticks are a safe light source for trick-or-treaters to have with them, or attached to their costumes to enhance their visibility. Drivers should exercise due caution at all times, but special attention should be given when driving near schools, parks, and residential neighborhoods on Halloween. The Des Plaines Police Department will have its Pumpkin Patrol out to assist our officers and residents this Halloween, but we encourage everyone to report suspicious behavior as soon as it happens by calling 9-1-1.

Bloomington’s Davis Mansion home to Lincoln’s strongest advocate EDITOR’S NOTE: The weekly Illinois Bicentennial series is sponsored by the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors and Illinois Press Association. More than 20 newspapers are creating stories about the state’s history, places and key moments in advance of the Bicentennial on Dec. 3, 2018. Stories published up to this date can be found at 200illinois.com.

Grand manors make up the skylines of many Illinois communities, but the history encapsulated at the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington holds it above the rest. Built in 1872 on Bloomington’s then east side, the mansion was home to Judge David Davis and his wife, Sarah. Davis served as judge of the state’s Eighth Judicial Circuit Court where he met and befriended an Illinois attorney by the name of Abraham Lincoln. “Davis and Lincoln rode the entire circuit together,” said Jeff Saulsbery, site manager for the mansion. “Davis had to ride the circuit because he was a judge, but Lincoln only did because he was driven to make something of himself.” Saulsbery said the duo spent plenty of time together, which led to Davis acting as “one of the biggest political operatives” in Lincoln becoming president. “What Lincoln did for the Circuit and what the Circuit did for him is a large part of Illinois history. His time in Central Illinois is what led to him becoming the 16th president of the U.S. and saving the Union,” said Guy Fraker, retired Bloomington attorney and Lincoln scholar. At the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860, five candidates vied for the Republican nomination, including Lincoln, who was the least known candidate among the group. “The judge (Davis) went to Chicago and secured hotel rooms for all the Illinois delegates and convinced them and others to vote for Lincoln,” said Saulsbery. Davis and his team used other tactics to boost Lincoln’s name at the convention and after the final vote was tallied, Lincoln was named Republican presidential nominee for the general election. Without Davis’s advocacy, Fraker said Lincoln would not have been named

president. “A lot of factors got Lincoln nominated, but the biggest factor was he had a friend like Davis who was a very skilled politician in 1860. That’s something we in Bloomington can be very proud of,” said Fraker. Fraker also touched on a side of Davis and Lincoln’s relationship that he said “isn’t particularly appealing.” “After Lincoln was elected president, there were two openings on the Supreme Court. All the lawyers who knew Davis told Lincoln to take care of him and give him a seat. Lincoln never responded to any of that and their mutual friends were quite critical of his decision,” said Fraker. After a long wait, Lincoln finally appointed Davis as associate justice on the Supreme Court in 1862. After Lincoln died, Davis said in a letter, “Lincoln was a peculiar man; he never asked my advice on any question. Sometimes I would talk to him and advise him; he would listen.” Davis so strongly supported Lincoln because of his “incredible integrity and intellectual honesty,” said Fraker. The David Davis Mansion was built after Lincoln was assassinated but, prior to his presidency, Lincoln visited the Davises at their previous home located on the same grounds in Bloomington. “The barn on the grounds is original to that first house owned by the Davises and the stable is exactly as it was 150 years ago. So, Lincoln’s horse was stabled here in the barn,” said Saulsbery. Other outbuildings still standing on the 4-acre lot known as “Clover Lawn” include a wood house, two privies, a foaling shed, a carriage barn and an original flower garden. Davis commissioned French architect Alfred Piquenard to complete the three-story, yellow brick, 36-room mansion for $75,000. The elaborate Victorian-style is a combination of Italianate and Second Empire architecture. Piquenard also designed the capitol building in Springfield.

The mansion was well ahead of its time in terms of amenities. Indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, central heat and gas lighting made up an impressive and modern estate. The last ancestors of the Davis family donated the house to the state in 1960 and it was opened as a state historic site. “The research into the history of the building started before a single brush of paint was put on the walls for restoration,” said Saulsbery. The state initiated $2.58 million to use for restoration of the site and years of research and labor resulted in a grand reopening in 1992. Now, nearly 40,000 people tour the mansion each year. In 2007, it was deemed one of the 150 greatest places in Illinois by the American Institute of Architects. The site is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated National Historic Landmark. “We are thought of as a museum, but we’re really an educational institution. You know the old adage: ‘You’re doomed to repeat mistakes if you don’t learn from history.’ That holds true today and it makes institutions like this more important than ever. We’ve got to know our past if we’re going to succeed in the future,” said Saulsbery. The mansion grounds, at 1000 E. Monroe Drive in Bloomington, are open for public tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Visitors watch a brief video on the history of the mansion at the visitors center before joining a 50-minute tour of the home, which delves into the lives of David and Sarah Davis, Lincoln and the Irish-Catholic servants who worked in the mansion. After a tour through two levels of the mansion, visitors can check out the gift shop and the 19th-century flower garden. CONFERENCE

CHAMPS Maine South claims 17th CSL title in 18 years, defeating New Trier, who was the Hawks last CSL defeat

BY DRAKE SKELBA For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com

With a win 38-21 win, over New Trier Friday night, Maine South claimed its 17th CSL South championships in the last 18 years. “In 2016, New Trier broke our 77-game CSL South winning streak and went on to win the 2016 Central Suburban League South Division championship,” Maine South head coach Dave Inserra said. “That lost CSL South championship energized us to go and win the 2016 IHSA Class 8A state football championship. In 2000, we did not win the CSL South but went on to win the IHSA state championship that year as well.” The Hawks were led by their senior quarterback Cole Dow. Dow, who would complete 10 of his 15 passing attempts for 152 yards and a touchdown. Dow would run for another 83 yards and score the two Hawks’, first-half touchdowns. Area pass receiving yardage leader, wide receiver Danny Lazic, would haul in four passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Maine South’s leading rusher, Danny Wolf had 67 yards on just nine carries. Jimmy Bartell would score a pair of touchdowns and rush for 40 yards.

After the Hawks took the opening kickoff, they would need just five plays to drive 80 yards and score on a 17-yard touchdown run by Dow. After Aiden Carolan’s, first of three point-after-touchdowns, the Hawks led 7-0, with 10:24 left in the first quarter. New Trier would take the lead, on a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt (7-of-15,163 yards, two touchdowns) to running back, Donovan Perkins (2 catches, 90 yards, 2 TD; three carries, four yards). With 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Ochsenhirt-Perkins, combo, would strike from 56-yards, to tie the game at 7-7. With 9:39 in the first half, they would connect again, this time from 36-yards, for a 14-7 Trevian lead, with 9:36 seconds in the half. Dow would connect with wide receiver Ryan Kilburg (2 catches, 52 yards) with 6:27 left in the half, which would lead to a 27yard field goal from Carolan. One minute after Carolan’s field goal, the New Trier punter’s knee touched at the New Trier four-yard line, while attempting to punt. One play later, Dow would score his second touchdown, on a four-yard run. The PAT was no good and the Hawks led 16-14.

FILE PHOTO

Maine South won the CSL title for the 17th time in 18 years.

The Hawks’ senior defensive lineman, Jon Halversen would shine in the last two minutes, of the first half. With New Trier mounting its final drive to retake the lead, before halftime, Halvorson, would come up with two huge quarterback sacks, to turn the Trevians, away before halftime. “Jonny’s (Halvorsen’s) sacks on New Trier’s final firsthalf drive, were huge for us and instrumental toward our victory,” Inserra said. With 5:40 left in the third quarter, the Hawks senior punter, Mike Velazquez made his mark on the game. Velazquez would bury the Trevians on their six-yard line, with a perfectly placed squib

punt. After a New Trier three-and out, the Hawks had the ball back at the New Trier 30. One minute later, Dow would find Lazic in the end zone from eight yards out and the Hawks led 23-14 “Every year we prepare for winning the CSL championship, “Lazic said. “I am very happy with how I played tonight. Our offensive line was outstanding. It was another great win for us.” Bartell would pick up a huge sack from his linebacker spot and then score his first touchdown, from eight-yards out. Dow and Lazic, would connect on a two-point conversion and the Hawks would lead 31-14 with eight seconds left in the

third quarter. “We really were well prepared for New Trier,” Bartell said. “We knew they were the one team in the CSL South that could challenge us. One more regular season game and then on to the playoffs. We have one goal and that’s to win another state championship.” New Trier’s Carson Kosanovich, would take the ensuing kickoff, 91-yards for a touchdown and the Hawks led 31-21, after three quarters. Bartell would pick up his second touchdown of the game, this time from four-yards out to conclude the game’s scoring, with 7:49 left in the contest. SEE HAWKS PAGE 7

50+ BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2018

How to make mammograms more comfortable Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result. Susan G. Komen states that mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening tool in use today. When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms. Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images. Until widespread customized

mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures. • Apply a topical numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort when compared to placebo and other pain-reduction techniques. Be sure to discuss application of the gel with your physician prior to your procedure. • Schedule your procedure for the right time. Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days

after a period is a better bet. • Take pain relief pills. A physician may suggest taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to the appointment to reduce discomfort before and after the procedure. • Speak with the technician. Women can express their concerns about pain to the mammogram technician, who might suggest various ways to minimize discomfort. • Learn about padding. Find an imaging center that uses padding on mammogram plates. MammoPad is a soft, white, single-use foam pad that is invisible to X-rays. • Avoid caffeine. Some women find that caffeine contributes to breast tenderness.

DAVE SAYS

Lay out a plan for success DEAR DAVE: I’m stuck in a deadend job and I only have a high school diploma. I’ve never minded long hours and hard work, but I’ve begun to realize I need to have a better career so I can spend more time with my kids. I feel like I’m missing out on their lives, because I work 65 to 70 hours every week. Do you have any advice on how to change my situation? — Tim DEAR TIM: Asking questions and exploring your options like this is a much smarter move than simply walking away from an unsatisfying job situation — especially when you have a family to think about. I’m glad you’re wise enough to take a thoughtful look at the situation, instead of making a rash decision that could have a negative impact on you and your family. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself in terms of education or your career. But before you do any of that, you’ve got to have a definite direction in mind. You need an in-depth, detailed game plan for the next three or four years that’s designed to put you where you want to be. It may involve going back to school for some classes, additional training in your field, or even getting a full-blown degree. HAWKS FROM PAGE 5 Hawks’ linebacker Luke Preston, had his usual great game and picked up a pair of sacks. 6-foot-4, 277 pound junior, Pete Skoronski added a sack and was instrumental on a great goal-line stand, by the Hawks defense in fourth quarter, leading 38-21. The hard-hitting Wolf, from his linebacker position, destroyed Perkins, on what appeared to be a legal hit, at the Hawk 20-yard line, breaking up the pass. The CSL officials though otherwise and called an illegal hit on Wolf. Inserra

disagreed, to stay the least and was issued an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. On the next four plays, the Hawk defense, was determined not to let the Trevians score. “We love it when Coach Inserra, gets an un sportsmanlike conduct penalty,” Halversen said. “Give us more yards. We were not going to let them score! We work too hard not to be CSL South champs. We have to shore up some things but overall we played well tonight. With the sacks, its really a team thing. We all work together to open up the lanes for each other.”

A three yard run by Perkins, brought the ball to the one-inch line. Three quarterback attempts were thwarted by the Hawk “D”, turning New Trier away on downs. “We were not going to let them score,” Bartell added. “We brought in big Pete (Skoronski) to help us out.” “We just keep grinding,” Preston said. “Especially against New Trier. We were not going to lose this game at home. I knew the New Trier QB was a good runner and for the most part we shut him down. Win next week against Niles West and then the

big five more wins for a state championship.” The Hawks take on the Wolves of Niles West at Wilson Field, next Friday. With a win, they would clinch another outright CSL South championship. “All our seniors from last year, came back tonight,” Dow said. “I was proud for us to pick up another CSL title in front of them. An all-around great team win. Our offensive line went up against a huge New Trier defensive line and made my life easy. I ran well tonight but I must get better passing the ball. I missed a few throws tonight.”
