Reduced Lanes on Harlem Avenue - Water Main Construction

Work continues to provide affordable, reliable, and fresh Lake Michigan water from Evanston to the Village of Niles via the Morton Grove Niles Water Commission. Water main rehabilitation is currently taking place on Harlem Avenue at Dobson Street. This work is planned to take approximately one and half months, weather permitting. The outside

northbound lane on Harlem will be closed from October 1st until mid-November. The motoring public should allow additional time when traveling through this area. The MGNWC is currently building a new water main which will connect Morton Grove and Niles to a cheaper water supply from Evanston instead of Chicago. Visit the MGNWC web site for more information about this legacy project and the longterm savings associated with it.

Unemployment Rate Falls in Thirteen Metros – Unchanged in One - Jobs up in ten metros

Unemployment rates decreased over-the-year in August in thirteen of Illinois’s metropolitan areas and was unchanged in one, according to preliminary data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). Data also show nonfarm jobs increased in ten of the metropolitan areas. “The unemployment rate continued its downward trend in all metro areas except one where it was unchanged,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “These are some of the lowest unemployment rates we have seen in years. In fact, for the sixth consecutive month, the Chicago metro area had its lowest unemployment rate on record.” Illinois businesses added jobs in ten metro areas, with the largest increases in: Kankakee (+6.2 percent, +2,900), Champaign-Urbana (+1.6 percent, +1,700), the Quad Cities (+1.1 percent, + 2,100), and Rockford (+1.1 percent, +1,600). Total nonfarm jobs in the ChicagoNaperville-Arlington Heights Metro Division increased (+0.8 percent or +28,400). Illinois businesses lost jobs in three metro areas: CarbondaleMarion (-0.9 percent, -500), Springfield (-0.3 percent, -400), and Bloomington (-0.2 percent, -200). Total nonfarm jobs were unchanged in Peoria.

The East Maine School District 63 Board of Education appointed Morton Grove resident Katie Anderson to fill the seat left vacant by former Board member Angelo Scarsella, who stepped down in August. The appointment runs through April 2019, when the seat will be filled through local elections. Anderson, a District resident since 2015, has three children – one who attends the District’s Melzer School. An active volunteer at her church and a past American Youth Soccer Organization Board member, she holds bachelor’s degrees in English and marriage, family, and human development from Brigham Young University. “We received applications from four highly-qualified candidates to fill this vacancy,” noted Board President Alexandra

Brook. “Each possessed unique assets that would serve our school community well; it was a difficult decision. After a great deal of discussion, the board chose to appoint Ms. Anderson. Her passion for children’s literacy and providing an equitable education to all D63 students resonated deeply with us.” “I’m truly honored and excited to serve on the D63 Board,” said Anderson. “As the mother of a district student, I’ve been impressed with the enriched educational experience our

schools offer - and the way they celebrate inclusiveness, family and community participation, and diversity. I look forward to supporting the district’s focus on student success - and on the growth and development of every child’s mind and future.” East Maine School District 63 offers a rich learning environment and multicultural perspective to more than 3,400 students in the diverse communities of Des Plaines, Niles, Glenview, Park Ridge, and Morton Grove. Committed to teaching excellence that provides all students with the specific opportunities they need to succeed and thrive, District 63’s six elementary schools (K-6), and Gemini Junior High (7-8), preschool, and afterschool programs foster each student’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth and achievement.

FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF COOK COUNTY

Preserve: Fall colors hidden beneath the green While all seasons provide something new to see in the Forest Preserves of Cook County, fall may arguably be the most visually stunning time to get out and explore. There are still some late-blooming wildflowers, and of course, canopies are exploding with vibrant colors. But what exactly is causing the leaves to become red, gold, orange and yellow? Rebecca Collings, Forest Preserves’ senior ecologist, explains that leaves aren’t actually turning a different color—different pigments that have always been present are just becoming visible.“We always hear people ask, ‘When are we going to see the leaves change?’ But the tree isn’t necessarily changing colors. As the tree prepares for winter, it decreases its chlorophyll production, the green pigment that helps plants photosynthesize. Other pigments are present,

but are masked by chlorophyll,” Collings says. “When trees stop making chlorophyll, these other pigments become more visible, and that’s when people will see the radiant yellows and oranges.” Why do trees stop photosynthesis? There is still sunlight during winter. For trees to photosynthesize— the process plants use to convert sunlight into energy—they absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and water through their roots. Through photosyn-

thesis trees are able to produce carbohydrates to make tissues and grow. “In order to absorb the carbon dioxide, the plant has to open up small holes in the leaf called stomata,” explains Collings. “Doing so is a risky for the plant as they also lose water in the process. Some plants, like our deciduous trees, ultimately decide it is a better use of resources to drop their leaves and regrow new ones next year. Essentially they’re in survival mode till next spring.”

Pair of local schools earn National Blue Ribbon award George Washington, Hynes among nation’s best elementary schools

BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

When the U.S. Department of Education announced its National Blue Ribbon Schools programs, a pair of local elementary schools were on the list. Morton Grove’s Hynes Elementary School, part of Golf School District 67 and George Washington Elementary School in Park Ridge Community Consolidated School 64 were among the 24 Illinois schools to pick up the honor. Both schools were selected as exemplary high performing schools, which according to the Department of Education, means “the achievement of the school’s students in the most recent year tested places the school in the top 15 percent in the nation in reading (or English language arts) and mathematics as measured by a nationally normed test or in the top 15 percent of its state as measured by a state test. If a non-public school administers both state tests and nationally normed tests, the school must be in the top 15 percent in both.” “The teachers, students, administrators and parents at these schools should be very proud of achieving this remarkable honor,” Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner said in a statement recognizing the 24 Illinois schools. “It’s great to see among the honorees both public and private places of learning located in small towns, urban areas and large cities across Illinois. Each school on this list is a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.” Hynes is an elementary school of 364 students. “We are deeply honored and proud that Hynes Elementary School has received this recognition for being an exemplary high performing school. This award is a true testament to our dedicated teachers and support staff, our talented students, and supportive families,” said Golf School District 67 Superintendent Beth Flores, Ed.D. “We have high ex-

pectations and have worked hard as a school community to implement an ambitious curriculum so that all students perform to their highest potential.” The award is not only for those that attend or work at Hynes. “We are thrilled that Hynes has received the Blue Ribbon award for being an exemplary high-performing school,” said principal Carol Westley. “We are so grateful for the hard work, dedication, and passion for excellence

shared by all members of the Golf School District 67 community.” George Washington nearly doubles the size of Hynes, servicing 651 students. “We are simply delighted that Washington has been awarded this honor for its commitment to student achievement, and congratulate our talented students, engaged staff, and supportive families for their dedication to learning and student success,” according to District 64 Superintendent Laurie Heinz. “We are very proud that Washington is leading the way within D64 as we see the positive impact that

our 2020 Vision Strategic Plan is having on students across our schools “Our comprehensive effort allows every child the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, through a rigorous core curriculum and a strong fine arts and physical education program. We also provide additional supports for students along the learning continuum and customized professional development to keep growing our teachers. We encourage student engagement through the use of technology as part of our future-ready 21st century learning initiative, too.”

Washington is the first District 64 school to be recognized in the current program. The school was nominated by the Illinois State Board of Education after meeting stringent performance requirements as an “exemplary high performing” school. “Many of our 650 students are the children and even grandchildren - of Washington School alumni, so our school traditions are deeply rooted and widely celebrated,” said Principal Stephanie Daly. “We enjoy an enthusiastic partnership with parents. Despite HQ move, Peoria home to 12,000 Caterpillar workers BY STEVE TARTER, GATEHOUSE MEDIA ILLINOIS

About this story: The weekly Illinois Bicentennial series is brought to you by the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors and Illinois Press Association. More than 20 newspapers are creating stories about the state’s history, places and key moments in advance of the Bicentennial on Dec. 3, 2018. Stories published up to this date can be found at 200illinois.com. Peoria wasn’t always a company town. It was a distillery town, a farm implement town and a river town before the Caterpillar Tractor Co. set up shop. A bond developed between company and town that became a mutually-beneficial relationship. Caterpillar rose to international prominence on the strength of rugged, reliable earthmoving machines while the Peoria area gained jobs — not only in bustling factories but at the headquarters of a Fortune 100 company, a rare distinction for a city of a population of 100,000. But in 2017, that symbiotic relationship underwent a dramatic change. Caterpillar announced two things that reverberated across central Illinois: the company ditched plans for an expansive office project in downtown Peoria that Caterpillar had promised with great fanfare just two years earlier, and the corporate headquarters would move to the Chicago area. Peoria would remain Caterpillar’s “home,” the company stated, emphasizing that 12,000 employees would remain in central Illinois while some 300 executives and staff would work out of corporate offices in Deerfield. Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis expressed appreciation for the employees who stayed behind but called the news “a punch in the gut.” State Sen. Dave Koehler said, “It’s something that everyone feared, but had hoped would never happen.” The city now has fears of future announcements from Caterpillar management, headed by new CEO Jim Umpleby and board chairman Dave Calhoun, who heads the Blackstone Investment Group, that more jobs might be sent out of town. While Peoria was jolted by Caterpillar’s actions last year, it’s no secret that the U.S. manufacturing scene has changed mightily since 30,000 people

were employed at central Illinois Caterpillar plants in the early 1970s. That was a time when most of Caterpillar’s machines were assembled in Illinois — in plants at Joliet, Aurora and Decatur as well as across the Peoria area. Now Caterpillar has more factories overseas — 76 — than it does in the United States, where 62 plants operate. Caterpillar maintains 25 plants in China alone. When it comes to opening plants in this country, Caterpillar follows the trend of big manufacturers that set up shop in the Sun Belt. U.S. plants opened by Caterpillar in recent years have been in Georgia and Texas while the company recently moved its mining division from Milwaukee to Tucson, Arizona. Caterpillar Inc., the name the company adopted in 1986, has expanded beyond bulldozers. Along with making a major commitment to mining, Caterpillar is now heavily involved with equipment used for oil and gas exploration, electric power generation and marine engines. But it wasn’t always that way. By the time the Caterpillar name was a registered trademark in 1910, the Holt Caterpillar Co. had established a plant in East Peoria in a building that previously housed the Colean Manufacturing Co., a firm that made steam-powered tractors before the company went bankrupt. Benjamin Holt’s family business started in the mid-1880s in California. Holt Caterpillar started up a division in the Midwest, moving to central Illinois with just 12 employees. Fifteen years later, the Holt firm merged with rival C.L. Best Gas Tractor Co., another California-based company, to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in central Illinois. After the 1925 merger, C.L. Best became Caterpillar’s first CEO, a position he held until his death in 1951. “Clarence Leo Best — no one called him Clarence. His friends called him Leo. At work, he was C.L.,” said Lee Fosburgh, Caterpillar’s archives director. Fosburgh pointed out that it was Best who got Caterpillar off on the right foot. “The Best Tracklayer Sixty became the Caterpillar Sixty,” said Fosburgh, referring to the workhorse tractor that

helped establish Caterpillar in the earthmoving marketplace. “Best helped lead the push towards the company’s adoption of the diesel engine. He came up with concepts and ideas right up until his death — at age 71,” said Fosburgh. Former CEO and Chairman Doug Oberhelman, in remarks made at the 2016 opening of the an exhibit on Best at the Caterpillar Visitors Center in Peoria, said Best’s business acumen was one of the big reasons for the company’s success. Oberhelman noted that Best went to Wall Street for Caterpillar’s initial public stock offering on Dec. 2, 1929 — just weeks after the devastating stock market crash that precipitated the Great Depression. After presiding over the company’s greatest sales year ever in 2012 when Caterpillar topped $65 billion in sales (an occasion celebrated in Fortune magazine with the headline, “Caterpillar crushes it”), Oberhelman went all-in on mining. In 2010, Caterpillar made the largest acquisition in its history, buying Bucyrus International, a Milwaukee-based maker of large mining equipment, for $8.8 billion. No sooner was the deal completed when mining around the globe went into a tailspin. As a result, Oberhelman presided over something else: the closing and consolidation of 20 plants worldwide and a dramatic reduction in the company’s workforce. Between 2012 and 2015, Caterpillar laid off 31,000 people. As a company that sold 34 pipe-laying machines to China in 1975, Caterpillar had a strategy for China in 2010: “We’re going to play offense and we’re going to win,” said Oberhelman at the time. By 2014, Caterpillar had 25 plants in China. But the Chinese market, once so hot, went cool. But like the heavy-duty equipment it produces, Caterpillar has shown an ability to weather storms, whether inflicted by markets or strong winds. Caterpillar was already bouncing back from the malaise in the mining industry in 2017 while in April of this year, Caterpillar posted the highest first-quarter profit in the company’s 93-year history with a 31 percent increase in company revenues. There were many great days in Caterpillar-Peoria history. During World War II, 191 Peorians, including 158 Caterpillar employees, shipped out as a group to the jungles of Burma, forming Caterpillar’s own 497th Engineer Heavy Shop Co.

touchdown run, on just six carries. With 7:34 in the first quarter, Gavin scored his first touchdown on a two-yard run. After Don’s place kicker Danny Simon, nailed the first of his five point-after-touchdowns, the Dons led 7-0. One minute after the Dons scored, St. Pat’s senior quarterback, Jack O’Rourke (15-of-24, 273 yards, 3 TD) connected with Shamrock wide receiver Xavier Saldana (four catches, 113 yards, 2 TD) on a 86-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 7-7. With 10:27 left in the half, Kozik, made a circus catch, off of a deflected Sayles’ pass, for a five -yard touchdown catch. With 8:05 left in the half, Dons’ defensive end Brendan Sheehy recovered a Shamrock fumble at the St. Pat’s 24-yard line. Out of the Wildcat position, Gavin would crash into the end zone SEE DONS PAGE 11

SCHOOLS

How to ease transition to a new school Being the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development. In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools. Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change. Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school. Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The educa-

tion resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have. Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved. In addition, such students are more likely to have good attendance and exhibit stronger social skills than children whose parents do not involve themselves in their children’s school. It stands to reason that students transferring to a new school may benefit from parental involvement even more than other students, as seeing their parents approach a new school with excitement and energy may inspire children to follow suit.

DAVE SAYS

Is mortgage disability insurance a good idea? Dear Dave: If someone is following your plan, is it a good idea to get mortgage disability insurance during Baby Step 2? — Craig Dear Craig: No, it is not. Mortgage disability insurance is a gimmick, and I would never recommend it to anyone. I think I know where you’re going with this. During Baby Step 1, I encourage people to save up and set aside a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is where you start paying off all your debts, except for your home, using the debt snowball system. A thousand dollars may not seem like a lot in savings during that time, but in the beginning it’s an attainable amount to save. Plus, it’s more than a lot of people have when they make the decision to get out of debt and gain control of their finances. Then, after finishing Baby Step 2 you move directly in Baby Step 3 — fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses. What I would recommend is having long-term disability insurance in place. It’s fairly inexpensive, especially if you get it through your employer. — Dave

from one-yard out for a 21-7 Dons’ lead in the second quarter. Gavin, an play a little defensive back for the Dons’, too. His red-zone interception, turned the Shamrocks away, preserving the 21-7 Don’s lead, at halftime. Schurr’s four-yard touchdown run, at the start of the third quarter put the Dons up 28-7. Gavin’s second interception of the game, again turned away the Shamrocks, three minutes later. “It was a big ESCC win for us,” Schurr said. “It’s always great to beat our rivals from St. Pat’s. Great blocks by my offensive line. They were outstanding. Just a great night. We all had a lot of fun.” “It meant a lot to beat a wellcoached and talented, St. Patrick team, tonight,” Sayles said. “I want to thank all of our offensive lineman. They did a great job in practice this week and a great job for us, tonight. Our receivers are very good and they have deflection-drills, in practice. That was a great catch by Kyle Kozik.” O’Rourke and Saldano, would

hook up again, this time from 10-yards out, to pull St. Pat’s, within 28-13. Gavin, again from the Wildcat position, would score his third touchdown of the game from two yards out, for a 34-13, Dons lead with 7:02 left in the game. O’Rourke would throw his third touchdown of the game, this time to Giovanni Capifali (four catches, 70 yards, TD), to cut the Don lead to 34-21, with 5:53 left, from 38-yards out. However, Gavin saved his best for last. After jumping over a befuddled, Shamrock tackler at the line of scrimmage, the 2017 ESCC Player of the Year, raced 40 yards to the end zone, for his fourth touchdown of the game. “We played a very physical game tonight,” Gavin said. “St. Pat’s played well but we were really tough and played a great game. Our offensive line, played outstanding tonight and have played that way all season. On my two interceptions tonight, our coaches always have us in position to make the plays. I stayed in my zone and as an athlete, I just made the plays.” “Its always great for an offen-

sive line, when we run for that many yards in a game,” Banich said. “We have some tremendous athletes in our backfield and our coaches always have us well prepared. We all are best of friends and hang out off-thefield. This win means a lot to a lot of people. We have a big rivalry with St. Pat’s and a lot of people, have been involved with this rivalry for a long time. “Ty Gavin is a special person. His vision. His speed. He is also the great leader of our team.” The Dons now pull into a second-place tie with Nazareth Academy (6-1, 4-1) in the ESCC. Marist (6-1, 5-0), rolled past Nazareth 34-12 on Friday night. The Dons make the long haul to Mundelein, to take on Carmel (3-4, 3-2), on Friday at 7. “Our kids came out here ready to play,” Notre Dame coach Mike Hennessey said. “It’s great to be 6-1 and 4-1, in the conference at this stage of the season. We controlled the game, especially in the second half. It’s a very happy night, for us. Ty Gavin is a remarkable kid. He just takes over the game. Our offense line is very good and did a helluva job for us tonight.”
