yard waste and leaf Pickup update Yard waste pickup continues through December 12, 2019.

Leaf pickup runs from October 15 to December 7.

Place leaves in the street against the curb and away from parked cars the night before your scheduled refuse pick-up day.

Do not include other landscape debris in leaf piles, as the Village will only pick up leaves.

All other landscape debris must be bagged or bundled with a yard waste sticker.

Be alarmed It is important to have enough smoke alarms in your home.

Fire research has demonstrated that with today’s modern furnishings, fires can spread much more rapidly than in the past when more natural materials were used. Because of this, having a sufficient number of properly located smoke alarms is essential to maximize the amount of available escape time.

“Be Alarmed!” is a fire safety education and smoke alarm installation program administered cooperatively between the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM).

The program distributes fire safety education materials and 10-year sealed battery ionization technology smoke alarms to fire departments in the state of Illinois.

The fire departments then deliver the education and install smoke alarms in residential dwellings within their communities. Although this program is available to residential dwelling only, The Morton Grove Fire Department will be happy to assist or direct landlords and businesses with any compliance questions or concerns.

students visit Partner school in germany; Completing 7th exchange

This summer, 25 District 219 students traveled to Germany to participate in the 7th international exchange with partner school Schönborn Gymnasium, located outside of Heidelberg.

Students enjoyed a 10-day host stay with their exchange partner and family and ended the trip with an extension tour into Salzburg, at the foothills of the Austrian Alps. D219 German students developed close relationships with their German exchange partners when the group visited Niles West and North in October 2018; this summer’s trip to Germany completed the second half of the exchange. Students were accompanied by North German teacher Tom Neal, West German teacher Joe Neumayer, and West French teacher Leslie Natzke.

While in Germany, students visited Schönborn Gymnasium and participated in trips to the Black Forest and France, as well as outings to local towns and destinations. On one sun-filled day, students spent the day at a beach where they water-skied, wake-boarded, and kneeboarded. Students enjoyed beach volleyball and a grill party, where Neumayer grilled bratwurst, pork, and chicken on a traditional “schwenkgrill.”

“I’d say I’m an avid griller, but this was certainly something new to me,” stated Neumayer.

“On a schwenkgrill, the meat swings over the flames on a large circular grill grate hanging down from a gigantic tripod. It was wild.”

Another crowd pleaser was the Ritter Sport chocolate factory, where students spent lots of Euros purchasing delicious German chocolate at fabulous prices.

While many students and families give ample thought to where they will attend college, taking such an approach to high school can be beneficial as well.

High school is a critical time in a child’s life. Many students simply attend their local public high schools, even if that school may not be the best fit for the student. It behooves families to investigate other possibilities they have to ensure teenagers end up in the right academic environment during high school.

notre dame beats montini to move to 6-0 on the year By mark gregory editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com It is easy to look at the success of Notre Dame football and look in the offensive backfield at junior quarterback Anthony Sales and senior running back Julian Schurr.

While the talented offense is a key component to the success of the Dons, the defense has been stout this year.

Led by senior Anthony Ranallo, the Notre Dame defense has allowed an average of 8.2 points per game this season and let up less than that last week in a 28-7 win over Montini Catholic.

Ranallo posted nine tackles for a defense that held Montini to less than 70 yards rushing for the game.

“Anthony is our leader since January and when Anthony says something, things get done. You gotta have a guy like that, whether it’s in the locker room, the weight room or on the field. The kids believe in him,” said Notre Dame coach Mike Hennessey. “The defense played great in the game and they have played great throughout the season.

We have fast, tough kids and we are playing really good, really smart football. Coach (Dan) DeFranza devises a tremendous game plan and the kids believe in it and execute it.”

The play of the defense has even impressed Sayles, who not only has a sideline view during games, but is challenged by them in practice.

“I am out of words for our defense, they do it time and time again. Coach DeFranza is a great guy and he always has those guys ready,” Sayles said.

Sayles, a starter last year as a

sophomore has grown into a player that has led the Notre Dame offense this season. Coupled with Schurr, the tandem make every snap a must watch.

“I have to thank coach Hennessey for bringing me up last year and making me the starter, it gave me the experience, confidence and poise for these kind of moments,” Sayles said.

Sayles ended the contest against Montini completing 12 of 23 passes for 120 yards, while Schurr posted 104 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns.

The win came in the first-ever match-up between Notre Dame and Montini, as the teams faced off in the second game of the newly formed Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference Green Division match-up.

“We had this game eyed on the calendar since the beginning and it is the first time we have played them in school history and we wanted to leave them with a good impression,” Sayles said.

Notre Dame is the lone ESCC team in the Green Division that features Montini, Providence and St. Rita and 17 combined state championships.

The Dons lead the league to this point, holding a 2-0 mark in conference and 6-0 record overall.

“We saw the CCL/ESCC merger and we loved the opportunity to play all of these great schools – we have never played Montini in school history and we made a statement,” Ranallo said. “We just wish we played Loyola.”

If Notre Dame keeps playing this way, a match-up with Loyola could happen in the IHSA Class 8A state playoffs.

marlee dear marlee, A lot of people wonder the same thing when I bring up the debt snowball. Some think paying off the debt with highest interest rate first is the best approach.

This may seem to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago debt is not a mathematics problem—it’s a behavior problem.

Personal finance is 80 percent behav-

ior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. Besides, if all those people were so great at math, they wouldn’t be up to their eyeballs in debt in the first place!

The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest is that modifying your behavior and providing inspiration to get out of debt is more important than the math.

Your probability of becoming wealthy is more closely connected to your behavior than your financial “sophistication” or academic pedigree.

When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope.

Then, you move on the next debt.
