Chamber seeks Night of Roses Award nominees Awards recognize individuals and businesses who make positive contributions to the Village

With only three months to go until the annual Night of Roses, the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Industry is looking for nominees for its annual Night of Roses Awards.

While the categories have changed over the years, the purpose of the award remains the same – to recognize individuals and businesses who make positive contributions to the Village of Niles. The awards are given out at the end of the April 27 Nights of Roses at Chateau Ritz banquet hall. The nominations are due no later than Feb. 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Since 2002, the Night of Roses has been the NCCI’s biggest fundraiser, as well as a venue to hand out annual awards and annual scholarships. It was traditionally held at White Eagle Banquet Hall.

The chamber skipped the event in 2016, but it returned last year in a new venue - Chateau Ritz.

The awards have changed over the years – while some categories endured since before the Night of Roses, others were one-offs, and some that endured for many years have been discontinued. This year the awards are the same as last

year. As in the past, all nominees must either be Niles residents or work for either a Niles business or public entity such as a park district or a library.

The Bob Wordel Living Legend Award was created to honor individuals who have a history of service and leadership in the community. As the application form notes, “their dedication and achievements match their spirit and character.”

The Ken Scheel Chamber Member of the Year Award honors current NCCI members who have consistently contributed toward the chamber’s success and welfare.

The Corporate Citizen of the Year honors members who have shown a sense of social responsibility and done something to “raise the standards of living and working” in Niles. Small Business of the Year award recognizes chamber members that made significant contributions to Niles’ economic

growth.

The Niles Citizen of the Year Award is similar to the Corporate Citizen award, except it is awarded to residents. Publlic Safety Excellence Award recognizes emergency services personal and public servants who have gone above and beyond to protect public safety.

Distinguished Volunteer Service Award, as the name suggests, recognizes individuals who made positive impact through volunteer work. Finally, the Dedication to Youth Service Award honors an individual who does something to educate and inspire youth.

The application form is available online at NICC’s website and in the chamber offices. Once filled out, applications can be sent in by mail to the chamber or e-mailed. The complete instructions are included at the bottom of the form itself.

Niles opens online store, to add merch Village is also looking to add more items, including Leaning Tower of Niles wooden keepsakes

Anybody wishing to own coffee mugs, golf balls, and drink coasters and other merchandise with the Niles logo can now get it online through the village’s official website.

The village unveiled the online store in December. According to Ross Klicker, the Niles Economic Development Coordinator, the page had only 17 views and no sales as of Jan. 17. The village is determined to change that and not only promote the store, but try to get some of the merchandise into physical Niles stores.

The village is also looking to add more items, including Leaning Tower of Niles wooden keepsakes and Niles-themed items sold in Jane’s Hallmark Shop.

The concept of Niles-themed items isn’t new. Coffee cups with both the newer and older village logos can be found in many village offices and meeting rooms.

But until recently, residents couldn’t get any for themselves The Niles General Govern-

ment and IT Committee has been discussing the possibility of setting up the online store for the past few months. As Klicker explained to the Bugle, the village did a trial run in the end of November 2017, during the Holly Jolly Market. The online store officially launched a few weeks later.

As of Jan. 19, the store sells mugs, as well as golf balls, pens and Christmas ornaments decorated with Niles’ current logo.

The store also carries drink coasters with a painting of the Leaning Tower of Niles and flag pins with alternative version of the village logo – a square design with a letter N that was one of the final three logos that the village considered before choosing the current design. As the Bugle reported at the time, Klicker spoke in favor of that particular design when the final three were unveiled, and this design occasionally shows up on village business documents.

To buy an item, customers must click on the “Online Merchandise Form” link on the store’s page. Once the item is

reserved, they must come to the village hall to pick it up.

While the store page is currently publicly accessible, it isn’t necessarily easy to find. Interested customers must scroll over the “Community” tab on the top of the village page and click on the “Niles Merchandise” link in the middle left column. They can also use the direct link at https:// www.vniles.com/1034/NilesMerchandise During the Jan. 17 General Government and IT Committee meeting, Klicker said that he wanted to look into whether Niles could create wooden ornaments through Cat’s Meow Village, a Wooster, Ohio based company that sells its own ornaments and lets customers commission their own. He got the idea after getting an e-mail from

someone who visited Niles in December.

“She has been visiting the area, and she and her family visited the Leaning Tower [of Niles] as a kind of thing to do in the area,” Klicker said. “And she was wondering if there was a specific trinket or an ornament they could put on a Christmas tree.”

After some back-and-forth, she suggested Cat’s Meow. Klicker did some research of his own and found that the items were cheap to order, and the village could put messages on the back of the ornaments. And he said that he talked to village trustee George Alpogianis, who chairs the committee, and they decided that it was worth looking into having some Niles-themed merchandise that would appeal to collectors.

Mitch Johnson, the Niles Communications and Multimedia Coordinator, wondered if some other company would be able to make these kinds of ornaments.

Klicker replied that he would be willing to look into it.

When asked whether rhe village could get Niles artists to design the ornaments, he replied that Cat’s Meow, at least, has its own in-house artist who designs ornaments based on the client’s

specifications.

“The other option is that we work with in-house staff,” Klicker added. “We want to spread – I don’t want to say ‘gospel of Niles’ - if we want to spread [awareness of ] Niles beyond our border, that’s best way to do it.”

Village Clerk Marlene Victorine had her own suggestion. She said that she recently stopped by at Jane’s Hallmark Store, a Hallmark franchisee located in Niles, at 8776 W Dempster St There, she saw towels with an inscription of “Niles, There’s No Place Like Home” and a door hanger with “Our hearts are at home in Niles” inscription. She immediately bought them and brought them to share with the committee.

“See, it’s the kind of stuff I would buy,” Victorine said.

“There were only a few left – I was lucky to get them” She told the Bugle that what she liked about the towel in particular is that it happened to use the similar shades of orange and green as the Niles logo.

“Lets talk to hallmark owner and see if we can collaborate,” Klicker said. “I [will] see if there’s a way we can collaborate or put his products on our site.”

Alpogianis agreed, saying that he thought it was a good idea.

Commissioner candidate Foster aims for far-reaching changes Democratic challengers Bushra Amiwala, Daniel Foster both Skokie residents

The race for the 13th district seat of Cook County Board of Commissioners is proving to be the most competitive in the last two decades, with two candidates challenging incumbent Larry Suffredin in the Democratic primary; and Republican candidate Chris Hanusiak challenging him in the general election.

Democratic challengers Bushra

Amiwala and Daniel Foster are both Skokie residents who never ran for office before and who, if elected, would represent demographic first for the board. Amiwala would be the first Muslim commissioner, while Foster would be the first openly gay commissioner. But Foster said that what sets him apart was that he’s the only candidate who is willing to become a full-time commissioner – something that, he says, is necessary if the county is to make the kind of significant changes that he wants.

If elected, he said that he would push to overhaul the way county property and sales taxes are collected, more service-sharing and collaborating between various gov-

erning bodies, changing the county justice system to put emphasis on rehabilitation and treatment over incarceration and. Foster said that he knew changes like this wouldn’t happen overnight, or even within his first term – but he felt that it was well worth the effort.

The 13th District spans some of this newspaper’s coverage aree and beyond: encompassing Skokie, Morton Grove and the Niles Township portion of Niles, as well as most of the county’s North Shore suburbs near Lake Michigan and Chicago’s Rogers Park and West Ridge neighborhoods.

Foster grew up in Evanston and Wilmette. He said that it was

a point of pride that he went to a public schools and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree from a public university – the University of Illinois at Chicago. He said that he only got into politics relatively recently because he believed in the power of government to make a positive change.

“I chose to run for office because I’m excited for the future and I want everybody to be excited for the future, too,” Foster said. “I feel we have potential to do a lot better for people as a government, and I wanted to get involved, because I wanted to share that positive vision with everybody.”

One of his major priorities is to overhaul the property tax system by reducing the factors that go into determining property values to land size, location and usage.

Illinois’ Underground Railroad

BY JAKE GRIFFIN Of the Daily Herald Despite Illinois’ status as a free state, runaway slaves and free blacks did not find the state accommodating in its earliest days.

Slave owners in southern Illinois were allowed to keep their slaves when Illinois joined the union in 1818.

Then, they were permitted to commit newer generations of freed black residents to indentured servitude for decades. Illinois’ early years are also littered with laws subverting black residents’ freedoms, the welcoming of slave catchers and on at least one occasion an attempt to change the state Constitution to allow slavery statewide.

Yet, throughout much of the early 1800s, Illinois served as a path to freedom for fugitive slaves traveling between safe houses as they sought asylum in Canada.

“I think Illinois can be proud of its history on racial justice, not so much at how the government reacted and what the laws were, but many individuals in the central, northern and western parts of the state have a proven history of helping slaves avoid capture,” said Owen Muelder, an author and director of the Underground Railroad Center at Knox College in Galesburg. “Illinois can be proud, for the most part at least, that there were many of its people who were on the right side of history.”

Recognized stops on the Underground Railroad dot the landscape of the state, mainly starting at the convergence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers at Grafton and continuing between the two waterways to Wisconsin. But just how many slaves found assistance and who was providing it is nearly impossible to know, according to historians. Some conductors never sought acknowledgment of their participation in the Underground Railroad, while others might have received too much credit.

“It’s been a long argument of how organized the Underground Railroad was,” said Dennis Naglich, an archaeologist at the Illinois State Museum. “There can’t be that much public knowledge (back then) or the other side would catch on.”

Only a smattering of outspoken abolitionists openly admitted to assisting fugitive slaves, risking legal action, ostracizing or death because of their defiance of federal and state laws.

“But keep in mind, many of these slaves escaped by their sheer wit and guile, and their own determination,” Muelder said. “While they might have gotten some help, much of the time they would have been traveling on their own and a lot of it was just chance.”

Perhaps the most famous Underground Railroad stop in Illinois is in Princeton, a few miles northwest of where the Illinois River takes a sharp downstream turn south from the east.

Owen Lovejoy was a preacher whose older brother Elijah was murdered in 1837 by a proslavery mob that was angered by the elder Lovejoy’s abolitionist views printed in an Alton newspaper he ran. Owen Lovejoy moved to Princeton following his brother’s murder and made ending slavery his calling.

“He was an unabashed abolitionist,” said Lois Peterson, a docent at the Owen Lovejoy House in Princeton, a National Park Service landmark. “People left his church because of

his strong beliefs.”

Lovejoy made no secret that his home was a haven for fugitive slaves, even after being arrested on charges of the crime in 1843. After his election to Congress, his 1859 speech denouncing slavery made national headlines when he declared he “aids every fugitive that comes to his door and asks it. Proclaim it then from the housetops. Write it on every leaf that trembles in the forest, make it blaze from the sun at high noon,” according to the National Park Service’s website.

Towns like Galesburg and Geneseo were known for their collective anti-slavery views, historians said. When slave catchers would ride into town looking for runaways, many of the towns’ men would gather together and escort the slave catchers out of town, Muelder said.

“They also used imaginative ruses to trick slave trackers,” Muelder said. “They’d send a carriage off from a barn in one direction to lead the trackers away so they could send the slaves off in the opposite direction a few minutes later.”

In northern Illinois, Graue Mill in Oak Brook was often used to house fugitive slaves, as was Blanchard Hall at Wheaton College. Lake County had several Underground Railroad stops including the Mother Rudd Home in Gurnee and the Kuhn Cabin site in Newport Township.

Lake County Forest Preserve historian and museum curator Diana Dretske said the county was an important way station for slaves fleeing to Canada via the Great Lakes, but it was made tougher because of the state’s notorious Black Laws.

“Most people aren’t very aware of Illinois’ history and how these laws were intended to control and regulate the movement and amount of the state’s black population,” Dretske said.

Even Abraham Lincoln — the Great Emancipator — once defended a Kentucky slave owner in Illinois over the freedom of a black family staying at the slave owner’s Illinois estate near Oakland. He had taken the case over the objection of an abolitionist friend, Dr. Hiram Rutherford, who’d helped the family escape from the slave owner. Lincoln lost the case, and apparently lost a friend, too.

“Dr. Rutherford was very upset that Lincoln took the case and wrote to him expressing his disappointment saying he thought they were ‘like-minded’ on the issue of slavery,” said Kathy Pardi, overseer of the history museum that is now Rutherford’s home in Oakland.

There is no record of the two friends speaking or corresponding ever again.

system fairer and create an incentive to improve properties, since doing so wouldn’t increase property values and, within it, their property taxes. Foster also felt that, with a system like this, property owners wouldn’t need economic incentives that reduce property taxes such as Class (6)B property tax classification, which temporary reduces property taxes on industrial properties in order to encourage redevelopment. He also felt that, as the result of the change, the governments wouldn’t need to create Tax Increment Financing districts, which use revenue from property tax increases to generate funding .

“Based on the system that I talk about, location will matter a lot more,” Foster said.

He also want to get rid of the county-based sales tax, calling it “regressive” because the less money a person has, the more it affects them. Instead, he would create a tax on investment properties. Foster said that New York City and Los Angeles already have it, and “nobody is fleeing New York and L.A. because of the investment properties tax.

However, it should be noted that both cities have a sales tax as well. According to the New York City Department of Finance’s website, the city’s sales tax doesn’t apply to food “purchased for home consumption” as well as clothing and footwear that costs less than $100.

Foster also said that he was in favor of replacing municipal taxes with a unified county tax. He told the Bugle that he saw it as a way to combat segregation. “[We must do it] in order to move away from segregated tax bases and unify as a county to provide services at a lower cost,” he said.

Foster readily acknowledged that doing something like this would require an agreement from municipalities in Cook County–something that, he said, he would work toward if elected.

Another major priority for Foster is criminal justice reform. He told the Bugle that his problem with the way the current system is set up is that many prisoners suffer from mental illnesses and/or addictions.

“They need help, they don’t need punished,” he said. “We have science today that proves prison conditions are psychologically damaging. And [the current prison system is] really harmful, because it costs lots of money and actually increases crime.”

Foster emphasized that hasn’t against all prison confinement, saying that “if somenone poses a immediate threat to society, incarceration may be only alternative.” But most offenders, he argued, don’t fall into that category.

In Aug. 31, 2017, the Lawndale Christian Legal Center and the Circuit Court of Cook County launched the Restorative Justice Court – a pilot project where people convicted of non-violent offenses get a chance to make up for what they did and get access to whatever resources they need to live better, crime-free lives.

Foster said he supports the project as a step in the right direction.

Along with criminal justice, the Cook County Health and Hospitals System accounts for the biggest share of the county budget. With the introduction of CountyCare Medicaid expansion program, CCHHS has been putting greater emphasis of preventative care. Foster said he supports that. As for CountyCare and other Medicaid expansion programs, he supports offering Medicaid as an option on Obamacare insurance exchanges.

In terms of labor, Foster proposed several measures that, he said, would attract more workers and protect both existing workers and customers from unfair

practices.

That includes requiring employers to disclose their wage range while prohibiting them from asking potential employees about their salary history, requiring businesses to include all taxes and fees in prices that get displayed to customers, ending upaid internships and, perhaps most controversially, prohibiting tipped labor. While Foster readily acknowledged that even workers who get tipped are divided on the issue, he felt it was the best for workers on the long run. His issue, he said, was that tips can vary depending on employees’ race and gender, and that, because tipped minimum wages are set lower than regular minimum wages, tipped employees may wind up getting paid less, especially if they work overtime.

In order to accomplish all that, Foster said, a commissioner needs to be able to work full-time. He noted Suffredin continued to work as a lawyer even after being elected, and Amiwala is a student.

“I’m only the only one in the race pledging to work exclusively and full time,” Foster said. “We do pay our county board members a salary, and I think the people deserve someone who works for them and not anybody else.”

According to the county’s Fiscal Year 2018 budget, the current commissioner salaries are set at $85,000.

It also indicates that the county covers certain transportation and travel expenses for commissioners and their staff, as well as “professional services” and office space rental and utilities.

While Foster said he was glad to see so many candidates competing, he criticized Suffredin for not working full-time and for being a lobbyist. He also said that he viewed Amiwala as a “conservative andidate.”

“She’s not in favor of [Cook County] minimum wage [increase], she’s not in favor of paid sick leave,” Foster said. “Durign 2016 [congressional campaign], she worked for [then-Illinois Senator] Mark Kirk when the rest of us worked for [his Democrat opponent] Tammy Duckworth.”

When asked to respond, Amiwala told the Bugle that she worked for Kirk in order to better understand where conservatives were coming from.

“This was after learning many of my friends would be voting for Donald Trump to be president, and I wanted to know why.,” she said. “I don’t want to be the candidate who is scared to work across the aisle to get work done. Same goes for County Minimum wage and sick leave ordinances” Amiwala added that she was a head field intern, and a major aspect of her work was asking voters questions, the first of which was about how much they fear “Islamic Terror attack on U.S. soil.”

“It made my time on a Kirk campaign a lot more valuable, as I was able to increase the visibility for Muslims in front of Republican voters who held fear for people of the Islamic faith, since they had never spoken to one before,” she said.

As for the minimum wage increase and sick leave mandate, in an earlier interview with the Bugle, she said that she supported the increase on a state level.

In a follow-up interview, she noted a significant number of municipalities used their home rule powers to opt out of the minimum wage and sick leave mandates, and, she argued, that didn’t have much to do with the ideological leanings of said municipalities’ governing bodies.

Foster said that, for the most part, he has been campaigning door-to-door.

His campaign disclosure forms also showed that he spent some money on Facebook ads.

Joliet’s Bercich on call for ‘Miracle’ finish

While most Chicago-area football fans knew the now famous NFC Semifinal game between Minnesota and New Orleans January 14 had a local flare with Vikings’ head coach being a Lockport Township graduate and Saints’ coach Sean Payton an alum of Naperville Central.

What many may not have known is that there was another local angle in the game now dubbed as the ‘Minneapolis Miracle’ was Pete Bercich, a Joliet native and Providence Catholic graduate, who is now the game day analyst aside playby-play broadcaster Paul Allen.

Unfortunately, after a 38-7 loss to the Eagles in the NFC Championship game, Bercich will not get to make more history and call the first ever Super Bowl with a team playing in its home stadium. Instead, he and the Vikings will welcome the Eagles and Patriots to Minnesota for the game.

Bercich has been part of the Viking family since he was drafted in the seventh round of the 1994 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. He spent five seasons as a linebacker for the Vikings until he retired in 2000, He then spent another five years as a Vikings’ defensive assistant coach before taking over the color commentator duties in 2007.

His long tenure in Minneapolis made the Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs 61-yard touchdown on the final play of the game to beat the Saints 29-24 in the NFC semifinal made it more memorable – but so did his history growing up a Bear fan in Joliet.

“To properly explain that, you have to go through history, I grew

That year, you just knew the Bears were going to win and it was fantastic,” Bercich said. “I came here in 1994 as a rookie and the people here, for those that remember, have been to the Super Bowl four times and lost each one.

“As a player, I played on the 1998 team NFC championship game that we lost (to Atlanta, 30-27 in overtime), I was on the field in 2000 when we got beat 41-0 (to the New York Giants), I was in the booth in 2009 when we lost to the Saints (31-28 in overtime). Two years ago, we miss a chip shot field goal to get

into the playoffs, I was coaching in 2003 when the Cardinals beat us on the last play of the game and knocked us out of the playoffs – the heartbreak has been how things have gone here.”

More heartbreak was what Bercich was mentally preparing for after the Saints’ Will Lutz kicked a go-ahead 43-yard-field goal with 29 seconds left and more so when the Vikings were penalized 5-yards on the first play of the final series with 25 seconds remaining.

Four plays later, Diggs was running down the Minnesota sideline for the game-winning touchdown.

“Watching that last drive and you get a false start and in the

back of my mind, I am thinking, I will have 30 seconds or a minute to sum up the season and I was going through that in my head and then it happened,” Bercich said. “So, the emotion part of it was a combination of all of that happening in a split second because our booth is right there on the 25-yard line on the Vikings’ sideline, so it happened right there in front of us.

“I have been part of the organization for 23 seasons and I am lucky to be able to do what I do and I am lucky to be able to bring the games to the fans. As an analyst, your job is to tell the people what is going on and you don’t always get the chance to come unhinged emotionally. It

was great to just let it all loose – it felt pretty damn good, I can tell you that.”

It wasn’t only fans in Minnesota cheering for the Vikings as a lot Chicagoland fans adopted the Vikings in the playoffs – some because they represent the NFC Central and some because of Zimmer, who was a three-sport star at Lockport, playing football for his late father Bill Zimmer, who coached the Porters from 1960-1994.

The NFL connection to the Joliet area is not the first this football season as 2018 started with Providence graduate Miles Boykin’s amazing catch gave Notre Dame a 21-17 Citrus Bowl win over LSU. Bercich said locals on the big stage in football is more than just happenstance.

“I think it is more than just coincidence that all of us from that area are involved,” he said.

“I have been around the field a long time and I coach high school football now and I look back at the Joliet area and it is just a fabulous sports area and it has produced so many great players and coaches. And I will be willing to bet you Joliet has produced more game day analysts for pro football than any other town, because you have Tom Thayer with the Bears. I honestly think it has to do with how much people in that area who just love the game and how we were coached and the people that coached us and how important football was to everyone when I was growing up.”

There was another reason Bercich thinks that local fans supported the Vikings and why they will likely pull for the Eagles in

the Super Bowl.

“You look at the Vikings and the Eagles and they are the same in a lot of respects. They are two teams you would like to root for,” he said. “Everyone loves an underdog. There is no big name, no one that is always in the camera and that is why we have never been a media favorite and this is a true team effort and it resonates with people.

And I don’t say this flippantly, but it resonates with the people in Chicago who know a lot more about football than most.”

And while the Vikings fell one game short this season, a season that was still a success after losing starting quarterback Sam Bradford in week one of the season and rookie starting running back Dalvin Cook in week three.

Bercich has watched a lot of heartbreak in Minnesota, but remembers the words from one legendary Viking figure.

“When I was playing, Dennis Green was my coach and God rest his soul, he was one of my favorite people of all time. He would always say, ‘just keep knocking on the door, keep knocking on the door and when it’s your year, it’s your year.’

Sometimes things don’t go your way and unfortunately for us, it has been that way for a long time,” he said. “When people say never give up, it’s not just a cliché. There is a reason for it, a reason behind it.”

Former USF coach Trudeau dies at 71 Jim Trudeau, a staple in the local tennis community for decades who served 13 seasons as a head tennis coach at University of St. Francis, died at his home early Thursday morning.

Trudeau, 71, spent 11 seasons as USF’s head men’s tennis coach from 2003-10 and 201115, compiling a 127-115 record.

He then led the Saints’ women’s program to a 22-19 mark in 2014-15, 2016-17 and the fall of this season.

Among his many honors, Trudeau was recognized as both the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year in 2015.

“We have lost an excellent tennis coach and a quality human being in Coach Trudeau,” said USF director of athletics Dave Laketa. “Jim’s love for tennis and his love for our program and the student-athletes that he recruited was incredible. With-

out a doubt, he bled brown and gold and we are forever grateful for what he did for both of our programs.”

In addition to his coaching duties at St. Francis, Trudeau served as an adjunct mathematics instructor at the university from 2003 until the end of the fall 2011 semester.

Prior to his time at USF, Trudeau was a tennis coach and mathematics teacher at Homewood-Flossmoor High School for 33 years. He was a two-time Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association (IHSTCA) Girls Coach of the Year (1988 and 1989) before being inducted into the IHSTCA Hall of Fame in 1996.

In his time with the Vikings, he produced a state championship (1989), a runner-up finish (1988) and three third-place finishes (1990, 1991, 1994) in addition to numerous conference titles.

Off the court, he was involved in promoting the game of tennis

in many different ways. He was a prominent figure in the IHSTCA as a board member from

1988-2000, its secretary from 1992-2000 and as chair of the hall of fame, girls all-state and

membership

committees.

Outside of coaching at the high school and collegiate levels, Trudeau was involved in all levels of tennis as the Director of Homewood-Flossmoor’s Park District co-ed summer tennis camp from 1992-2002 and as a teaching professional at the Holiday Tennis Club (1982-84), Flossmoor Country Club (197376) and Homewood-Flossmoor Indoor Racket Club (1973-75).

A United States Tennis Association member since 1981, Trudeau was ranked among the top senior players in the Midwest for many years and was a developmental coach for the United States Professional Tennis Association since 2002.

Trudeau, who lived in New Lenox, is survived by his wife, Bonnie, daughter, Collette, and granddaughter, Cara.

“We are most grateful to Jim’s family, especially his wife, Bonnie, for sharing Jim with us,” continued Laketa. “We extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to each of them.

“We were the lucky ones and our student-athletes learned so much from him both on and off the court. The knowledge they gained from him was priceless and something that will guide them the rest of their lives.”

15-year fixed mortgage is only debt worth getting DEAR DAVE, Do you have a guideline ratio for mortgage debt to income?

LEVON DEAR LEVON, When it comes to buying a home, I always tell people to get a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, with monthly payments that are no more than 25 percent of their take home pay. This type of mortgage is the only debt I don’t beat up people for having.

Still, I urge folks to pay off these loans in less than 15 years.

The average person following my plan pays off this type of loan in about seven or eight years. That’s a pretty big deal in terms of your financial security. And paying extra on your mortgage doesn’t have to be a strain. You can start by simply rounding up your payments.

If the payment is $770, make it $800 instead, and apply the extra to the principal balance. If you want to get more intense, you could make an extra house payment each quarter, or go the route of bi-weekly payments.

To do this, simply make half a monthly payment every two weeks. By the end of the year you’ll have made 13 payments instead of 12. This will knock years off the length of your loan.

Remember, your income is your largest wealth-building tool. It’s so much easier to save, invest, and give when all your money isn’t flying out the door to make payments!

investment portfolio?

DON DEAR DON, No, I do not. I also don’t recommend oil or corn futures. All of these are examples of commodities, and the commodities market is extremely volatile.

In addition to the market being wildly volatile, the prices on commodities isn’t based on actual production. It’s based largely on a supply and demand curve. If there’s a shortage on one of them, the price shoots up.

For example, when you’re talking about gold and silver, there’s more demand than supply when the economy is bad.

In this kind of scenario, people are fearful and lots of them run to buy gold. This drives up the price to unrealistically high lev-

els.

Again, the price on a commodity isn’t based on anything other than fear or greed, and a supply and demand curve. The prices aren’t based on an actual production of income, like it is with stocks or real estate. I don’t buy commodities at all, especially gold and silver. I don’t recommend you buy them, ei-

ther.

Celebrating Catholic Schools Week 2018 Save the Date for CSW 2018 — January 28– February 3, 2018 MONDAY: Celebrating Your Community A central aspect of Catholic education is learning the importance of service to others. When students take part in service activities—both local and beyond— they demonstrate the values and faith they gain through their Catholic education and learn how to make the world a better place.

When they observe how others serve the community, they gain an appreciation for how they can continue to serve others their entire lives.
