One of Niles’ centenarians, Pearl Weaver, was born Jan 10, 1918 in Chicago, just celebrated her 101th birthday. She spent her youth in Chicago across the street from St. Mary of the Angels church, watching it being built. In the 1920s Pearl remembers her aunts dressed as flappers. She attended school there and experienced the great depression as a young girl. Entertainment at that time included going to the rollerskating rink and to the moves, both of which she which she enjoyed. Pearl has seen many developments over her lifetime, including talking pictures, automobiles, television and other modern appliances. As a young adult she was an artist, and she painted flowers on furniture. She was a wonderful seamstress and made wedding gowns and men’s coats. She crocheted, knitted and loved to cook. She married her husband Casmir (Casey) Weaver in 1940. She raised three children, Robert, Daniel and Marilyn. The family moved to Niles in 1957 and Pearl still resides in the same house. For a time she worked at a manufacturing company on Howard St. Pearl has been fortunate to have traveled around the world, visiting New Zealand, 10 European countries, Mexico and Canada. Her memory is sharp and she loves to talk about her experiences and it is a joy to listen to her stories.

Niles West class donates to charity English class raises money for ‘Feed My Starving Children’ This is the 19th year that Niles West English teacher Sharon Swanson and her classes have made an impact on the world. Since 1999, Swanson has assigned her class to write a persuasive research paper to convince others to donate to a particular charity. Last month students researched charitable organizations, conducted an interview with their chosen organization, wrote a paper on the merits of the organization. Classes voted for the top essay, and donations were collected to benefit that organization. This year, more than $1,400 was distributed to World Vision, Build, Inc. and Feed My Starving Children. Students writing the top papers: Sophie Piotrowski, Hina Haider and Angeles Alanis. The students are sophomores. Piotrowski, in Swanson’s third period class, selected World Vision to write about since she has grown up contributing to
the organization through her family and her church. The money collected will go towards purchase of goats and chickens, as well as supplies for new mothers. She said, “I feel it’ll make a big impact on people in other countries.” Hina Haider, in Swanson’s sixth period class, wrote about Build, Inc. in Chicago. Build stands for Broader Urban Involvement & Leadership Development and is one of Chicago’s leading gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organizations. Their mission is to engage atrisk youth in schools and on the streets to help them realize their potential and contribute to our communities. After reading about how many youth are affected by gun violence, Haider selected Build, Inc. as her organization to support. Angeles Alanis chose Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) as the charity to present to her seventh period class. FMSC is a Christian non-profit that provides nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. Her reasoning, “They spend their money very wisely, and are highly rated on Charity Navigator.”

Local businesses contribute to food pantry Food can be donated by individuals, businesses and local organizations such as churches, schools Demand for emergency food supplies keep trending upward due to various challenges related to local emergencies like the fire at The Landings apartments, the federal government shutdown and the economy. In response, leadership and staff at Town Hall have continued to nourish strong relationships within the township to keep supplies at sustainable levels. Food can be donated by individuals, businesses and local organizations such as churches, schools and Scout programs who may hold food drives. “We are personally doing everything we can to keep up with the demand,” Supervisor Laura J. Morask said. “Local businesses within our township have really stepped up to meet this challenge. In particular, Jewel-Osco in Park Ridge did such an outstanding group effort to raise $75,000 of holiday dinners that our board will be presenting their store a special plaque of recognition at our upcoming Board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22.” The Jewel-Osco team of employees, led by longstanding front end manager Benny Velazquez, informs residents about a special donation at checkout which gives each customer the option of purchasing dinner for a family of six people. The donation can be added
to the final bill and customers get to hear an immediate announcement over the store intercom. In 2018, the Park Ridge store was the No. 1 fundraising location in the entire company of 2,300 stores. Food Pantry Director Carol Langan and Supervisor Laura J. Morask visited the store to personally thank their entire team. “To be able to meet and thank each one personally on behalf of our Maine Township residents was a shining moment in this winter weary January,” Morask said. “They are the epitome of a true community partner.” Demand has been steadily increasing to an average of 150 food boxes per month, which goes towards feeding over 300 residents per month within Maine Township. Each box is hand picked by township staff with dozens of nonperishable food items to help supplement the needs of residents in distress. When the emergency food program first started back in 1981 there were only 15 food boxes provided per month. The following wish list of items are always in demand: macaroni and cheese, cereal, juice, canned tuna, plain rice, crackers, peanut butter, pancake mix, canned pasta, condiments (ketchup/mayonnaise/ mustard/pickles), cooking supplies (flour/sugar/oil/salt/pepper), cleaning supplies (laundry soap/dish soap), paper products (toilet paper/paper towels/ facial tissue), storage products (tin foil/plastic wrap) and personal hygiene product (sham-

Timeshares are a complete waste of time and money Don’t take a chance playing the game - there are much better uses for your time and money! DEAR DAVE, How do you feel about timeshares, and the free trips and dinners they offer as part of their sales pitches? Is it possible to win with these things? DAN DEAR DAN, In my opinion, timeshares are a complete waste of time and money. Lots of folks go into this kind of thing believing they’ll play the game and win. They think they’ll get a vacation weekend and other free stuff, then just say “no” when the time comes. The problem is, most people aren’t as tough a sell as they think. Besides, do you really want to waste a weekend of your life letting some pushy salesperson twist your arm? That’s not my idea of fun. As a whole, timeshares have an in-

credibly high dissatisfaction rate. It’s almost impossible to find anyone who’s happy they bought into one, and there are good reasons for this. Why would you pay thousands of your hardearned dollars for a tiny place you may or may not get a chance to visit once a year? Add to this the fact that you have no equity in the place, and you’re stuck paying ongoing maintenance fees. My advice? Don’t take a chance playing the game, Dan. There are much better uses for your time and money! —DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’ve been late on a credit card bill several times, and it was turned over to a collection agency. They have offered a couple of different payment
options. If I agree to one of these, does that mean the original creditor gets paid, too? CARTER DEAR CARTER, A collection agency either owns the debt outright, or they’re directly representing the credit card company in these kinds of situations. It’s not unusual for things to be handled this way when someone has defaulted on a loan. Unless you have the cash to make good on the debt outright, I’d go ahead and accept whichever deal makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. You’ve already got a mark against you on your credit report for having this turned over to collections, so an indication of settlement on a credit card you defaulted on is really no big deal. But here’s my best piece of advice — stop using credit cards! —DAVE Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. GIRLS BASKETBALL
AMONG THE
BEST
Sam Galanopoulos has secured her place among that of Niles West superstar Jewel Loyd
BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com
Former No. 1 draft choice in the WNBA and current champion, Jewell Loyd may be the first name that comes to mind when someone thinks about Niles West girls basketball, but you can bet Sam Galanopoulos is going to make sure you remember her name. The 5-foot, 9-inch senior guard averaged 14.5 points, 4.8 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game last season, Galanopoulos is nearing the 1,500-point mark for her career and is second behind only Loyd in most, if not all, key statistical categories at West — something she is proud of. “I have trained with Jewell and played for her and to think she is one of the best. She is a WNBA champion, an MVP, she is the highest you can get and to have anyone bring me up in the same conversation with her it is the coolest thing ever because not many people get compared to a professional athlete, not to mention an athlete like her,” Galanopoulos said. Having Loyd to help her with her game when she is in town and just having the numbers to shoot for has helped Galanopoulos reach the point she is
at now. “I figured I might as well go all out,” she said. “If you are chasing the best, it can only make you better and reach another level of extreme in your game. If you play the game of basketball and you have that player for your mentor and your idol, you have to go for it.” So, with her place among the best Wolves ever to step foot on the gym floor already secure, Galanopoulos is now looking to lead her team to a regional championship this year. “One of our team goals at the beginning of the season is to get to the sectional because we haven’t go there since maybe the state teams,” she said. “Even when Jewell was here — the greatest of the great — didn’t get there and we really want to get to that level and that is what we have been drilling every practice. We have to go hard and put everything we have into in. We are playing our best right now. We are pretty well rounded on the offensive end. We go hard and we execute our stuff. Defensively, our bigs get rebounds, they block shots, they are a huge part of getting out and getting things going on offense. This is second nature to us and our chemistry on our team comes SEE BEST PAGE 6

THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 2019 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM BEST FROM PAGE 5 easy to us and helps us stay focused for four quarters. “My junior year when we had the coaching change, we weren’t sure what was going to happen. I was kind of nervous because it could have went one of two ways – it could have gone down the drain or we could make something of it and I think we have turned the program around and I think we have made a name for ourselves.” Galanopoulos said that would put the icing on what has been a great final season. “It is nice that everything that has been going on a high in my last year at West,” she said. “The last four years have been awesome and this team is really senior heavy — we have 10 seniors and playing games for us is fun because we have been playing together since feeder (program). We know how each other play and all the things we have done in the past and everything we have done as kids comes out on the court. I have had games when my shots aren’t falling, but it is not that we are going to lose because I am not scoring. We have players that know their roles and everyone does their job. “We have a lot of people that
will do whatever it takes to win. We will be competitive. We will not go out easy – we will go out swinging every game. I want to go out on a bang and have no regrets.” Galanopoulos has had one thing off her mind this season and that is where she will play college basketball next year. She committed to Loyola University in Chicago last April and will follow her parents and become a Rambler in the fall. “I wanted to commit before the start of my senior season so I didn’t have any distraction and I could just go out and play basketball and have fun and play with my team every day for five days,” said said. “My parents have never missed a game or an open gym – they have been unconditionally supportive I have never not played with my parents in the crowd and to have that in the stands, especially early on, will be calming. Ever since I was a little kid, they have been there and it isn’t too far of a drive for them. I also want to major in pre-med and they have a fantastic medical program. “Also, the coaching staff – I love all of them. (Head) Coach Kate (Achter) was an All-American point guard and what a better way to learn that from one of the best in the fricking game?”

We invite your input on this task, and would appreciate if you could take about 10 minutes to fill out a survey from School Exec Connect at this link. The survey will remain open through January 31, 2019. The link is also available through the home page of any of our school websites. All survey responses are anonymous and confidential. In addition to the survey, if you would like to provide input in person on the District’s strengths and challenges and the characteristics the next superintendent should possess, School Exec Connect consultants invite you to attend one of these public forums open to all staff, parents
profile, publicity and more.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK SCHOOLS
Things to consider when choosing a high school Planning ahead for the future often involves having a strong educational foundation upon which a secure and financially rewarding career can be built. While many students and families give ample thought to where they will attend college, taking such an approach to high school can be beneficial as well. High school is a critical time in a child’s life. Many students simply attend their local public high schools, even if that school may not be the best fit for the student. It behooves families to investigate other possibilities they have to ensure teenagers end up in the right academic environment during high school. Public schools, private/religious institutions and specialty and vocational schools may have different assets that set them apart. Therefore, students and their parents can look at various factors to determine which school will present them with the right environment and tools for success. 1. Identify needs and wants. Have a
frank discussion as a family regarding what the student is looking to get out of the high school experience, as well as which settings help him or her learn the best. 2. Look at programs offered. Schools vary in their offerings. Comprehensive high schools offer a smorgasbord of courses to appeal to as many students as possible. Magnet or specialty schools may have specialized focuses, such as STEM, communications, business, or art. 3. How much college prep is desired? While most schools offer advanced placement courses that can translate into college credit, some offer specialty tracks that enable high school students to earn a high school diploma and associates degree concurrently. 4. Check out campus size. The number of students on campus and teacherto-student ratio can affect how some students learn. Social kids may like big schools, while an intimate setting may bring others out of their shells.
