o help kick off Catholic Schools Week, St. John Brebeuf, 8307 N. Harlem Ave., Niles, plans an open house for Sunday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. An annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, Catholic Schools started in 1974. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 which runs from through Saturday, Feb. 4, is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

As part of the celebration at St. John Brebeuf, an outdoor ice rink, will be blessed by Father Michael Meany during the open house, and will be open to the

public during daylight hours through February. A Shoot the Puck contest is 11 a.m. on Jan. 29. A toy raffle for young children as well as a special appearance

by Jack the Jaguar, the school mascot, are also on the schedule.

The annual celebration week includes Masses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, St. John Brebeuf will focus on the value that a Catholic education provides to young people as well as its contributions to the church, the community and the nation.

Members object to tax district referendum Latest referendum would require voter approval for new tax district creation

A group of Niles businesses and government officials filed a legal objection to the referendum that asks voters if they want to take the authority to establish new tax districts out of the village board’s hands.

The referendum was launched

by Niles resident and long-time activist Joe Makula. He launched several referenda in the past, and while many of them ran into legal issues, the referendum taking away Niles mayors’ power to fill vacancies on the village board ultimately stuck.

The latest referendum would require voter approval every time a new “taxing district” is created or expanded. Makula argued that, because such district affects all residents’ property taxes, they should have a final say over their existence.

But Katie Schneider, the Executive Director of the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, argued that it would hurt commercial development in Niles, and the lack of development would hurt property values.

Over the years, Makula proposed a number of referenda regarding Niles government. In 2013, he filed a referendum that would create term limits for Niles mayors and trustees. In response, the village trustees placed their own term limit referendum on the ballot, the key difference being that, unlike Makula’s referendum, it wasn’t retroactive, so the years the officials already served wouldn’t count toward the limit. Both referenda passed, and the outside attorney hired by the village determined that the village referendum would be the one that would apply, because Makula’s referendum wasn’t “self-executing.”

In 2014, he launched two referenda – one to make the village clerk an elected position, and one to take away Niles mayors’ power to fill trustee vacancies, requiring those vacancies to be filled by special election. While the former didn’t survive legal challenges, the latter appeared on the Nov. 4, 2014 ballot and passed. On Nov. 17, 2015, the village placed a referendum asking

voters if they want to reverse it on the March 15, 2016 primary ballot – only to see most voters voting to keep things as they were.

Makula submitted the most recent referendum on Oct. 10, 2016.

It asked whether “all new tax districts or additions to existing tax districts in the village of Niles be invalid unless approved by voters of Niles at the next possible election.”

The vote would be on the ballot in the April 2017 municipal election and, if approved, it would take effect immediately.

The referendum doesn’t define what the “taxing districts” are. It would almost certainly include Tax Increment Financing districts, which freeze the tax revenue that goes to taxing bodies and collects the extra revenue that’s created every time the taxes go up in a TIF fund. It is not clear whether that would apply to Special Service Areas – district where property taxes are increased to fund certain projects – because they already need to be approved by at least 20 percent of the voters in order to take effect. Nor is it entirely clear whether that would apply to Cook County property tax classification incentives, since they apply to individual property lots and because it is Cook County rather than the Village of Niles that ultimately approves them.

Village trustee Denise McCreery, who previously served as Niles Chamber of Commercialism and Industry’s director, told the Bugle that it took a few months to figure out how to proceed from there. By the time the year began, Jack Drexler, owner of Fluky’s Chicago-style beef products distributor, volunteered to file an objection, and election attorney Jim Nally was brought on board to help with the legal aspects of the process.

In early January, an e-mail went out to all members of the chamber, inviting them to a private gathering on Jan. 5 at Playbook sports bar. It was signed by Schneider and Dean Strzelecki, current village trustee and the chamber’s former president. The e-mail urged all businesses to contribute funds to cover the costs of filing an objection and, if necessary, further legal costs if the objection is accepted and Makula decides to appeal, The e-

mail argued that, if the referendum passed, it would hurt the village’s ability to offer incentives to developers. And that, it argued, would hurt everyone reading the e-mail.

“A distressed commercial venue will drag down existing sales and commercial property values,” it said. “The health and well-being of your business will be negatively impacted with this referendum.”

The Jan. 5 meeting was designed to give all chamber members that wanted to help an opportunity to discuss strategy and ask Nally any questions they might have about the legal side of the process.

Schneider and Drexler attended the meeting, as did McCreery After the meeting, McCreery told the Bugle that other trustees supported the objection, but they were careful to ensure that village officials who had conflicts of interest wouldn’t be involved. That included he members of the Niles Elec-

toral Board, which included Mayor Andrew Przybylo, village clerk Marlene Victorine and Joe LoVerde, the village board’s longest-serving trustee.

“I am completely against this referendum,” McCreery told the Bugle. “It’s completely harmful to resident to the government process and to economic development.”

The trustee said that residents already have control of the process, since she and other trustees answer to them. McCreery also emphasized that she always tried to keep her constituents’ wishes in mind.

“These incentives are approved for the benefit of the residents, not for the benefit of us,” she said.

Drexler told the Bugle that he wanted to hold off making any comments until the objection is filed.

Schneider told the Bugle that she was concerned that, if it takes a few

months to approve a tax incentive, companies that wanted to take advantage of it may simply go to another municipality. She also had concerns about the referendum’s language.

“I think it’s a very vague referendum, and I think it will have a big impact on [Niles’] business community and the community in general,” Schneider said.

She also argued that tax incentives have actually helped Niles taxpayers.

“Most of the tax incentives for businesses and TIFs were to improve commercial and industrial properties, which translates into higher taxes [on commercial and industrial properties] and lower taxes on residents,” Schneider said.

Drexler officially filed the objection on Jan. 10. The Niles Electoral Board convened to rule on the matter on Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. - after this issue’s print deadline.

On Friday, they will witness the presidential inauguration, hear the day’s music performances and watch the inaugural parade.

Saturday is performance day, with Maine South’s Concert Choir performing at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax.

Meanwhile, the Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will perform at the Schlesinger Center for the Performing Arts in Alexandria, Va., as will the Philharmonic and Symphonic Orchestras.

Each group will receive evaluations of their performance, and the trip will culminate in an awards banquet for all participating students on Saturday night before the group returns home on Jan.22.

Pair charged in staged home invasion A 30-year-old woman and her 38-year-old ex-boyfriend have been charged with multiple felonies in connection with a home invasion at her Maine Township residence and the death of a dog found in her husband’s vehicle, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Monday.

At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2016, Sheriff’s Police responded to a report of a home invasion in the 9400 block of Bay Colony Drive. According to the report a man in a black ski mask, armed with a gun, forced his way into a home. The man punched the 30-year-old woman in the face. He bound her and her 32-year-old husband’s hands with packaging tape and beat the husband with a stick.

During their investigation, Sheriff’s Police detectives learned that the woman, Mehwish Memon, had conspired with her ex-boyfriend, Syed Hassan, of Chicago, to commit

the home invasion. The masked, armed intruder was identified as Hassan.

Detectives also learned that Memon had filed a false domestic battery report against her husband on Dec. 16, 2016.

Memon later dropped that charge. Before Memon called 9-1-1 to make the false report, Hassan slashed the tires of Memon’s husband’s vehicle, according to the investigation.

On Jan. 10, Memon and Hassan were arrested and charged with home invasion, aggravated unlawful restraint and filing a false police report.

Memon and Hassan were also charged on Jan. 10 in connection with a Skokie Police Department investigation, in which a deceased dog, marijuana and a gun were found in Memon’s husband’s vehicle. Investigators learned that Memon had given Hassan a key to her husband’s vehicle.

Honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing voting rights fight When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today We are facing a critical time for voting rights in our country. On January 9, I spoke to the Southland Ministerial Health Network at their Martin Luther King Day Spirit of Excellence Awards about the need to continue the fight for voting rights as the best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Not that long ago in this country, African Americans who tried to register to vote and those who would help them register, were locked out of clerks’ offices, or worse, intimidated, beaten, even killed—so that they wouldn’t exercise their right to vote.

The 1965 Voting Rights Act helped end that violent voter suppression.

As we honor the legacy of Dr. King and those who fought for the Voting Rights Act by registering to vote and going to the polls, we must confront the ugly truth that across the country, voting rights are being threatened again. In 2013 the Supreme Court severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, giving many states wide latitude to restrict access to the polls, which they are doing with enthusiasm. We have yet to see what further damage the Supreme Court will do under the next administration.

Our successes would not have been possible without the help of engaged and involved citizens, civic groups and legislators. Eleven years ago I introduced Early Voting to Illinois, and each election cycle we see significant increases in Cook County residents voting early.

We have also implemented online voter registration, same-day voter registration and expanded our election judge program to include high school students.

This year, we reached a record 3 mil-

lion registered voters in Cook County.

We have worked diligently to ensure the lists are cleaner and more accurate.

But there is still work to do, here and nationally.

Across the country, we must bring back crucial parts of the Voting Rights Act and reverse dangerous decisions on allowing money to flood our political system. It is outrageous that the Supreme Court has said that your influence will, in effect, be determined by how much money you have.

Here in Illinois, we must pass Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). AVR will save us money be streamlining the process of cleaning the voting rolls and thereby ensuring we have the cleanest rolls possible. Government agencies should harness technology to share information so that voting rolls are accurate and citizens don’t need to unnecessarily engage with multiple bureaucracies.

A functional democracy requires voting so the wishes of the electorate are supposed to guide our public policy. When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today: public policy that is simply not what people want. Voters do not want continuing inequality or justice that is determined based on your skin color or your wealth. Dr. King understood this. He understood the relationship between racism, economic inequality and the right to vote. Today our challenge is galvanizing our energy to continue the fight he gave his life for.

Kicking off The Great Read with Feb. 2 gala The 2017 Great Read community literacy program will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book with Harry Potter costume and team trivia contests at its February 2 Opening Gala.

The event at the Joliet Public Library/ Black Road Branch kicks off a month of special events including an art contest and a Potter-themed family magic show.

The Great Read is a consortium of public and private organizations promoting literacy, reading, conversation, and community in Plainfield and surrounding southwest suburban partner communities since 2004.

Great Read community members are encouraged to read about Harry Potter and take part in the many programs scheduled in February at the 10 partner libraries.

The numbers border on fantastical — more than 500 million copies sold of the seven core books and $7.7 billion in movie sales. Not bad for a boy wizard who didn’t even know he had magical powers. Yet, the numbers alone cannot begin to reflect the incalculable impact on world culture that Harry Potter has had since he and his two best friends searched for the “Sorcerer’s Stone” (or “Philosopher’s Stone, in England) in 1997. NILES Battery A 19-year-old Chicago man told police he was attacked in the 6900 block of West Oakton Street on Dec. 19. The victim reported that he was punched in the face multiple times by a male, but was able to run away, police said. An investigation was pending.

Burglary The front door to a house in the 8400 block of Green-

wood Avenue was damaged, Dec. 19 but entry was not made, police said.

Burglary to Vehicle Three cars parked in lots in the 5600 and 5700 blocks of Touhy Avenue were forcibly entered on the evening of Dec. 18, police said. Items including a backpack, clothing, jewelry and purses were reported stolen from two of the three cars, police said.

Forgery Jianxing Wu, 41, of Federal Way, Wash., was charged with forgery and retail theft, while Xueguang Lin, 39, of Chicago, was charged with forgery following a Dec. 18 incident in which numerous cans of baby formula were allegedly stolen from a store in the 6100 block of Touhy Avenue, police said. Wu was also charged separately with retail theft stemming from the Dec. 14 theft of baby formula from the same store,

police said. Wu and Lin are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 13 court.

Property Damage A man allegedly kicked the door of a store on the 8700 block of Dempster Street, breaking a piece of metal off the door, on the night of Dec. 19, police said. The manager of the store told police that the man, who left the area before police arrived, became irate that he was unable to purchase alcohol without identification.

Theft Lorraine Wimberl-Norfleet, 51, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft on Dec. 21 after police said she stole merchandise from a store on the 8200 block of Golf Road.

On Dec. 18, a man allegedly attempted to buy several appliances from a store in the 8200 block of Golf Road using false identification. The items were not sold to him

and he left the store, police said.

Notre Dame fights through JCA early battle, makes a run late to seal the ESCC win

The difference in boys basketball in the East Suburban Catholic Conference now and just a few years ago is noticeably different – thanks to teams that had been on the bottom coming up and competing.

One of those teams – Joliet Catholic Academy gave Notre Dame a run for its money in ESCC action before the Dons closed the game late, winning 57-46.

“We had a pretty big run and I think our offense really stepped up,” said Notre Dame coach Tom Les. “Matt (Stritzel) started to score. He struggled early and he is our go-to guy offensively. I think early in the third quarter, he got to the free throw line and he made free throws. As a scorer, if you get to the line and see the ball go in a few times, there is a trend that you will end up playing better – which he did.”

Stritzel ended the game with 21 points, 15 in the second half.

Joliet Catholic stuck in the game early, being down only 1918 at halftime and 34-29 after three quarters.

“They did a good job,” Les said.

“They played hard and that program is getting better and better and better. I thought they wore down a little in the second half.

They made some turnovers and we converted. Jeameril (Wilson) got a dunk and Matt got a couple in transition and that kind of takes the air out of you when you turn it over and they get an uncontested layup.”

Maybe even just as good as the win is the fact that the Dons won while being tested.

“I told (JCA coach) Joe (Gura) before the game that our league has gotten to the point where anyone can beat anyone on any night. There is no game where there is a given,” Les said. “Our SEE WIN PAGE 10

Demons fall late to Leyden

Maine East had a couple things going against it from the start last week against Leyden.

First, the Demons had not played in two weeks and secondly, the last time they did play, it was a win over the same Leyden team.

While East had the upper hand the first time, Leyden walked away with a 59-46 win in the second showing - thanks in part to Maine East scoring only seven points in the final quarter of play.

“We had them for the first three quarters. We made too many mistakes down the stretch and we didn’t play the type of defense we needed to play,” said Maine East coach Karol Hanusiak. “I don’t want to say they wore us down, but they looked like they were in better shape than us.”

Hanusiak knows from the last time the teams met that Leyden would not be a push over.

“They are a good team,” she said. “They have some penetrators and some good guards and we didn’t take care of the basketball the way we needed to take care of it and we made too many

mistakes in the last six minutes of the game.

“Leyden is scrappy and they play hard no matter what the score is. It is tough when you play a team and win and then see them 12 days later. It doesn’t matter what us as coaches say we are talking about 16, 17, 18 year olds and in the back of their heads they are thinking, we had them once we might have them again.”

One thing that did not help matters for Maine East was losing Angelina Apostolou to a sprained ankle early in the game.

“There was some mental breakdown when Angie went down,” Hanusiak said. “No matter how much we tell the kids they have to keep plugging away, Angie, Lauren (AlbaGarner) and (Caralina Apostolou) play every single minute of every game unless something goes wrong. Those three work so well together and when one goes down. it messes with their psyche.”

Hanusiak said this was not the first time Angelina Apostolou had been injured this season.

“She sprained it in practice after the first game of the season and she was out for a good three and a half weeks,” Hanusiak said. “It was a bad sprain and she worked her tail off to get back. Then she tweaked it again before Christmas. Hopefully, we get her back soon.”

Caralina Apostolou led the scoring for East with 17 points, while Jackie Buczkowski added 11 and Alba-Garner tallied 9.

Former Rush coach teaching the game right

In the today’s hypersensitive landscape, the game of football is getting a bad rap – especially at the youth level as talks of concussions and other serious injuries threaten the very existence of the sport.

There is at least one local organization and coaching staff that is working to teach the game of football the right way – and so far it seems to be working.

The Patriots Youth Travel Football team has been winning championships, sending players to the top of the high school game and beyond and doing it all with an All-Star class of coaches – all of whom make teaching the right way to play their first priority.

Leading the way in terms of coaching pedigree is former Benedictine All-American and Arena League Hall of Famer Bob McMillen.

McMillen is the only member of the current 12U Patriots staff that has a son on the team – a team that recently won the Pop Warner Super Bowl at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Prior to taking the Patriots to titles, he was a three-time All-American for what was then Illinois Benedictine College, a fullback and linebacker from 1995-2008 in the Arena Football League where he retired as the league’s second all-time leading rusher. He then coached with the Chicago Rush as an assistant and was named head coach in 2010, earning Coach of the Year honors in 2013 before coaching two seasons with the LA KISS, owned by legendary rock stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2013.

“It is relieving,” McMillen said of coaching with the Patriots. “There is a lot less stress than when you are dealing with professional athletes and having the pressure of winning games for fans and stuff.

Being able to come home and teach the game of football to kids is exciting and fun and a breath of fresh air to watch kids develop and get better as the season goes on.

“We tell the parents that we are not a babysitting service. We are here to teach the game of football and for the kids to get better as the

season goes on and if they want to play in high school or even beyond, it has to start at this level.”

Two of those players on the championship team are Downers Grove residents Sal DeLuca and Zach Bluder.

Bluder, the starting center, said the experience of playing for the title was one he will never forget.

“It was a great experience,” Bluder said. “Our coaches told us it was going to be real hard in Florida and the first game was a wakeup call for us and we pushed through it. We have a lot of special players on this team and we work really hard.”

DeLuca agreed that the team had a once in a lifetime experience.

“It was really fun to spend the week in Florida with the team,” DeLuca said. “It was great when we faced the teams because they were a big challenge, but we were the team that won. We train really hard and we had our minds on the games and we were going to be the opponent. We used to goof around a lot and the coaches taught us to make it first that we want to win a championship and not just goof around and it paid off.”

For DeLuca, an offensive and defensive lineman, his play is not all about himself when he is on the field. He said every time he steps on the field, he is playing for the memory of his uncle Salvatore DeLuca – who Sal is named for.

Salvatore was a member of the Downers Grove South football team and was killed in an accident at age 17 in 2001 on the way home from football practice. The Mustangs won the Class 8A state title that season.

“I am trying to be the best I can just like him,” DeLuca said. “When I first tried on his helmet and jersey, it was inspiring to know he was so good at football and I want to be just like him. It makes me and my family proud. We lost him at such a young age, that it’s like a younger him is inside me playing football.”

As DeLuca and the other Patriots try and play to their best – they know they are doing so with the best coaches around.

“The kids all know where I came from and what I have done, but this was my seventh national championship I won with the Patriots organization. We don’t go

The Patriots 12U team won the Pop Warner Super Bowl. out and recruit kids, the kids that come out are the kids that we are going to try to be successful with,” McMillen said. “Being able to play for 13 years and then coach (in the Arena League) may give me a leg up on some coaches, but it is all about teaching the game the right way. That decreases injury and helps kids become better football players.

“A lot of credit has to go to the parents. They know that when you are being taught by a guy who has been there and done that in college and professionally and being successful in the youth programs as a coach, it helps. The kids that sign up, they know who they want to play for. I stress to parents to do your homework before you sign your kid up for a football league and make sure the coaches that you are trusting your son to play for know what they are talking about. I am not bad mouth any program – but they have to see who will be coaching their son. Is it an armchair dad who has never played the game or is it someone who knows what they are talking about that has been around the game and been around youth football and can teach the proper techniques. We teach proper tackling techniques and a lot of programs just want to see who can hit harder and that is the wrong way to do it. That is how you get your injuries. In the 12 years I have been around youth football, we have only had three concussions and two of them were from a kid SEE RUSH PAGE 10

We have had a lot of them over the years.�

DiFusco said the program’s success in turning out quality athletes has been the reason for the growth of the program to communities outside its Naperville base. “I think the most important thing that we see are coaches not doing it the right way and what we are seeing now because of the success of the program is we have kids from all over,� he said. “We have kids from Bolingbrook,

Romeoville, Joliet, Oswego, Aurora, Plainfield, Chicago, Wheaton, you name it. We have kids coming from all over to play Patriots football because the see that we develop kids the right way. We teach the fundamentals the same from when they are six-years-old.�

That influx of other communities makes playing for the Patriots more fun for the athletes. “It is real fun to have people from

everywhere,� Bluder said. “Every year I make a lot of new friends on the team and that makes it an even better experience.�

Both DiFusco and McMillen know that influx of players is because parents are seeing the kids being taught the right way and while they are successful, it is not all about the wins and losses. “They go hand in hand. If you are winning, you are teaching the kids the right way to play football and if you are teaching kids the right way to play football, you are winning,� McMillen said. “It is not just the 12U team that won nationals, we are all successful. “It is awesome for us to see kids that we coached for years have success in high school or get a college scholarship. It is great to know that something I did early in that kid’s life allowed him to not only go out and be a great football player, but a great human being.�

Stritzel led the way with 24 points, while Wilson added 21. The Dons bounced back with a 74-62 win over Downers Grove South. Stritzel tallied 41 points against the Mustangs.

Should they dissolve the LLC?

DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free, plus she has a business giving music lessons. We formed an LLC last year when she had several students and was making over $3,000 a month, but that all changed when our first baby arrived. Now, she has only

a few students, and they bring in around $700 per month. Should we dissolve the LLC? BEN DEAR BEN, First, congratulations on being debt-free and new parents. Happy New Year to you all!

In most states, the only upfront cost for an LLC is the money you pay for the initial set up. There may be a small fee for a business license and subsequent annual renewal, but that generally doesn’t add up to much. Then, there’s the money you pay for filing your tax return on the LLC once a year. Even if you live in a state where there are other fees to consider, as long as the cost

of maintaining the LLC wasn’t killing you, I’d recommend keeping it in place. You went to the trouble of opening it, and you just might use it again someday. Even if your wife is staying home with the baby, she just might be able to take on more students again as time goes by.

Just be reasonable and use common sense. If you spend $3,000 to stay open, and you’re making $700, you’d dissolve it, right? But as long as you don’t have fees that are making you cringe, I’d probably leave it in place.

would get into trouble, my grandparents would always bail him out.

This time he came to my wife and I, asking for $350 to get out of overdraft at the bank. We’re trying to live on a budget and get control of our finances, and $350 would make things kind of tight at the moment.

What do you think we should do?

JEREMY DEAR JEREMY, I understand feeling an obligation to help your dad. But there’s a lesson here that dad needs to learn, and it’s something that goes much deeper than the money or helping out a family member.

You have to do the right thing, no matter how dad reacts to this. Right

now, the right thing is taking care of your family and not putting them in jeopardy. So my answer to dad would be “no.” Another thing that needs to happen is for the definition of “help” to change. When you say he’s been irresponsible with money his whole life, giving him $350 won’t help — and it will make you an enabler. Just handing him $350 will actually hurt him, and it will give him the idea he can continue being dumb with money and hit you up for cash anytime.

Like I said, I understand the pull of helping out a parent. So if you feel this is something you absolutely must do, I would advise making the $350 contingent on the fact that he begin and complete a financial counseling course. Be gentle when you talk to him, and let him know it hurts to see him struggling. But let him know, too, it’s his responsibility to work through his debts and take care of his own finances!

SENIORS The Niles Senior Center, 999 Civic Center Dr., Niles, offers programs to support the health, wellbeing and social needs of seniors, age 55 and over. The Center offers a variety of programs such as luncheons, health education, clubs, and day trips, as well as classes on topics ranging from dance to cooking to yoga and tai chi to computer instruction. Provided services also include information and referrals, nursing and social services, meals on wheels, AARP tax assistance, and Medicare counseling.

Stop in and check out the Media Center. There are 10 laptops, and an iPad with volunteers to help assist you.

Free admission Free Tax Assistance AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps low and moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older. Volunteers are trained to assist in filing tax forms and certain schedules, including the Form 1040. Taxpayers with complex returns, or in instances where the counselor feels they do not have adequate training or knowledge, will be advised to seek paid tax assistance. Under the Volunteer Protection Act, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers must stay in the scope of the program and do those returns for which they have received training.

Beginning January 30, appointments can be scheduled for individuals with simple returns by calling the Tax Hot Line, 847-588-8440, between 9:00am and 2:00pm. Ap-

pointments begin in mid-February and run through Wednesday, April 12.

Snow Shoveling Assistance If you are a Senior and/or a disabled Niles resident and in need of assistance, please contact the Niles Senior Center at (847) 588-8420 to register or volunteer for this program. By registering for the program, we will do our best to match you up with an available volunteer within your neighborhood. Volunteers will be asked to remove snow from public walkways and front sidewalks. After the conclusion of a 3” or greater snowfall, volunteers will visit their assigned home within 48 hours to remove snow.
