DeStefano kept off ballot for 6th Ward Mazzuca alleged signatures on DeStefano’s nominating petition violated election laws

The race for the Sixth Ward seat on the Park Ridge City Council got off to a contentious start, as incumbent Marc Mazzuca kept his opponent, Patrick DeStefano, off the ballot.

Mazzuca alleged that 22 of the signatures on his opponent’s nominating petition violated election laws. He also alleged that the way DeStefano’s Statement of Candidacy form was signed violated established procedures, so it should be declared invalid. The Park Ridge Municipal Offices Electoral Board dismissed the latter objection, but when it came to signatures, it accepted the Office of Cook County Clerk’s finding that 17 signatures really were invalid, sending the number of valid signatures below the minimum number required to get on the ballot.

But DeStefano isn’t quite out yet.

He said he would launch a write-in campaign, that he said he was confident he would win.

Under the Illinois election law, anyone who wants to run for alderman in Park Ridge must collect nominating signatures from no less than five percent and no more than eight percent of the number of people who voted in the last regular election. In 6th Ward, that means no less than 67 and no more than 117. DeStefano collected exactly 67 signatures – so if even one was declared invalid, he would be out of the race.

In his complaint, Mazzuca alleges that that there were 22 signatures that should be disqualified. He alleges that 16 signatures were not genuine, four signatures belonged to residents who aren’t registered voters and two petitioners’ addresses were misstated. The complaint also points to the fact that, in DeStefano’s statement of candidacy, the date when his signature was notarized had the year scratched out and “2016” was written above it. Mazzuca argued that, under established notarization standards and procedures, any

changes must be initialed by a notary. Because this didn’t happen in this case, he argued, the statement of candidacy should be declared invalid.

The Park Ridge Municipal Offices Electoral Board is made up of the mayor, the city clerk and the longest-serving alderman. Because that alderman had a conflict of interest, Fourth Ward Ald. Roger Shubert was chosen to fill the spot instead.

The board looked at the complaint on Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. City Attorney Julie Tappendorf explained that the next step would be for one of the city attorneys and both candidates to visit the Cook County City Clerk’s office, where the staff would pull up the voting records and check all disputed signatures and petitioner information one by one.

“They would compare signatures on nominating petitions to voter registration records,” she explained.” The reason why it has to be done in the Cook County building is because they’re holders of voter records. They will make determination whether [the two sets of signatures] matches.”

Because of the election deadlines, Tappendorf said, the appointment needs to be scheduled as soon as possible. After some back and forth, both candidates agreed to a Jan. 6 appointment. The follow-up electoral board meeting was scheduled for Jan. 9, at 8:00 a.m.

Mazzuca wondered whether the board could rule on the candidacy statement issue.

“I haven’t provided legal analysis

of it yet, so we’ll do it on Monday the 9th,” replied Tappendorf.

On Jan. 6, the Cook County Clerk’s office ruled that five of the objected signatures were valid, but the remaining 17 weren’t. As Mazzuca explained that included 11 signatures that were tossed because the names were printed rather than signed in the signature field, one that was tossed because a resident who printed her name in the signature field put her name down in the line below again, signing this time. Four were tossed because the residents’ address in the petition didn’t match county records.

As for the statement of candidacy issue, DeStefano’s attorney Leonard Cannata testified under oath that he put in the original date, and he was the one to cross it out and change it. Tappendorf told the board that based on her analysis, there was legal precedent for statements of candidacy to still be valid under these circumstances.

The electoral board voted to follow her advice, overturning the objection.

But with the nominating petitions, Tappendorf said, the situation was more clear-cut. Originally, Cannata said that he and his client

were prepared to collect affidavits showing that all 17 individuals who signed the petition really did sign it and were really registered voters.

Mazzuca objected, and Tappendorf suggested that, given how many signatures were on the petition, it may not be worth the trouble.

“I always want to err on side of candidate [to have] the opportunity to present case and rehabilitate [the signatures],” she said. “But I think its worth asking, in that point, with 17 signatures, would you believe that you’d be able to rehabilitate? If some of them are fatal, I would hate to have the board come back and meet again if there isn’t ability to rehabilitate them.”

After conferring with DeStefano, he said that his client agreed, and that he would mount a write-in campaign instead.

The board then ruled against DeStefano, concurring with the county clerk’s findings.

“I hope you learn by this situation,” city clerk Betty Henneman remarked as she cast her vote. “I hope you candidate learned also that they need to read directions better.”

Mazzuca told the reporters that he was happy with the outcome.

“I think the board found, correctly, that [Destefano] didn’t put the minimum amount of effort,” he said.

The incumbent alderman said that he would keep an eye on DeStefano, just in case he decides to appeal the board’s ruling.

“I don’t take anything for granted, and I plan to continue make the case for worters as to why I deserve another four years,” Mazzuca said, saying that, if elected, he would focus on encouraging fiscal discipline, investment and infrastructure and holding city staff accountable to residents and city officials.

On his part, DeStefano insisted that he wasn’t planning appeal the decision, saying that it would waste city time and money.

“I am confident that I can do a write-in campaign and win,” he said Evoking president-elect Donald Trump, DeStefano said that he was campaigning on getting things done for Sixth Ward residents, nothing more.

“Make the ward great again,” he said. “Let’s helo the residents. I just want the streets fixed, I just want answers. It’s been four year, and there hasn’t been any change.”

Trustees eye reach of tax classification Class B incentives geared toward industrial properties, assessed at 25% market value

Over the last 10 years, the Village of Niles Board of Trustees signed off on property tax classificationbased incentives for 17 properties, in hopes that lowering their property taxes for 12 years would benefit the village in the long run.

The report presented to the Niles Finance Committee on Dec. 21, 2016 gives a mixed picture.

Not all of the companies that applied for incentives got them approved, and some of ones that got them didn’t see increases in property values. But Ross Klicker, the Niles Economic Development Coordinator, told the committee members that he believes that the incentives still benefit the village overall.

Cook County offers a number of the incentives to encourage new development or help existing businesses to invest in their property. All of them hinge on temporarily lowering the rate at which the properties are assessed, resulting in lower taxes. The municipality where the property is located signs off on the incentives and the Cook County Board of Commissioners gives the final approval.

In Niles, the Class 6b incentive is the one that gets the most applicants. It is geared toward industrial properties, which are usually assessed at 25 percent of their market value. With the Class 6b classification, the property is assessed at 10 percent of its market value for 10 years, 15 percent during the 12 year. After that, the rate reverts to normal, but the property owners can apply for 10year extension after ten years, and continue to re-apply as long as they want.

The village board has also approved some applications for Class 7b classification. This is geared toward commercial properties, which are also assessed at 25 percent. The classification reduces the assessment value to 10 percent for 10 years. For the next three years, the rate goes up five percent a year until it returns to the regular rate.

Finally, the village has approved

Class 7c tax incentives. Like Class 7b classification, it’s aimed at commercial properties, but the assessment value is lowered for a shorter period of time. They would be assessed at 10 percent for three years, 15 percent on a forth year and 20 percent on the fifth year, returning to the regular rate on the sixth year.

Since 2008, the village board signed off on the 7b classification for the former Travelers Inn property, the Class 7c classification for the then-vacant lots at 7025-7049 N. Milwaukee Avenue and 15 Class 6b classifications for various industrial properties, including renewing the classification for Shure that was originally approved in 2002.

However, county legislative records show that not everything that the village supported got the county approval. As of this writing, the county board hasn’t approved either the 7b classification, even though the village signed off on it April 14, 2015. The county also didn’t approve Seefried Industrial Properties’ Class 6b application for 5600 W. Jarvis Ave, which Niles signed off on in Aug. 26, 2014. The property was a former home to Woodward Inc’s Niles office and research facilities. Woodward was already in the process of consolidating its Niles and Skokie operations in a new, larger building at 6300 Howard St, and Seefried was planning to knock down the building once the move is complete and build something larger and more modern in its place. At the time, the company said that it wouldn’t go ahead with the plan without the incentive.

According to Klicker’s report, that hasn’t stopped Sefried from investing $8 million in new construction and $92,244 on permit fees so far, more than $13,500,000 it planned to spend when it applied for the incentive. The fact that the Travelers Inn site didn’t get Class 7b classification didn’t stop Lakhani Hospitality, which owns the property, from continuing with its plan to demolish the motel and build the new Holiday Inn Express hotel – though the opening has fallen behind schedule.

by Molto Properties LLC to build a new industrial facility at 7720 N. Lehigh, however, Nules signed off on both in 2016, so it may be to early to tell whether the county would approve them.

The county board did approve the application for Class 6b status for 7555 N. Caldwell Ave, where Chicago-based Summit Industries is looking to relocate, on Oct. 26, 2016. Because the property assessments for 2016 aren’t available as of this writing, it’s not clear how the board decision would affect property taxes.

As for the remaining 14 industrial properties, Klicker’s report reveals many successes. Bee Sales, a wholesale distribute that has been benefiting from Class 6b status since 2009, has been bringing more and more in property taxes every year, with its payments going up from $313,123.29 in 2008 to $407,082.07 in 2015. Shure paid $216,671.68 in 2008, and while its property value dipped significantly in 2010, it has since rebounded, to the point where it paid $230,590.79 in 2015. Woodward’s new location, which had Class 6b status since 2010, initially brought in less property taxes than it did before the status was granted, but it has been gradually going up, to the point where, in 2015, it paid more in property taxes than in 2009. And the company wound up spending $41 million in construction and $454,370 in permit fees – significantly more than the $13 million it planned to invest when it applied for the incentive.

For other companies, the situation is less certain. Mid-States Glass & Metal got Class 6b status in 2013, but its property values haven’t moved since then, remaining at 61,778, which is below the assessed value it had at any point between 2008-2012. The amount it paid in property taxes has increased, albeit slightly.

Klicker told the Finance Committee that he was concerned about this particular case.

“If there’s one property I need to talk to the [Cook County] assessor and find out what’s going on, it’s this property,” he said.

BBJ Linen, a linen rental company, saw a modest increase in property values. It spent a total of $756,000 in construction and $10,021.50 in permit fees – which, taken together, is less than $1 million to said it would invest when it applied for the incentive.

Imbibe, a beverage maker, got Class 6b status in 2014, and its property value went up next year, causing its property taxes to go up to $63,276.78. While that’s less than what it paid between 2008-2012, 2013 saw its property value drop, bringing down its tax payment from $82,907.14 to $29,024.18. Klickr’s report also notes that the company spent $2.9 million on new construction – less than $2.5 million it was planning to spent when it applied for the incentive.

There were also situations where the companies that received Class 6b incentives actually saw their property values decline.

Specialty Print Communications,

which got the incentive in 2010, saw its property values go up and down , and and iit consistently paid less in taxes than it did before the incentive. GHP Group, an electric fireplace manufacturer that got the incentive its building in 2014, has actually seen its property value shrink in 2015, and the amount it paid in taxes dropped from $177,911.44 to $141,260.44.

Klicker told the finance committee that he thought that, overall, the incentives benefited Niles.

He noted that many businesses in question generate sales tax revenue as well, so it’s in village’s interest to help them.

“There are business in our industrial park that [generate] sales tax,” he said. “If they were to leave, what would that do with our levy ability? If we were to not approve [Class 6b incentives] and lose sales tax rev, what is ts the impact?”

Helping Shure in particular, Klicker said, helped Niles in many ways.

“It’s impossible to put dollar value on it, but having Shure in our community has the value of recruiting businesses,” he said.

Klicker said that, overall, property values for Niles industrial buildings have been dropping until 2016.

And while he didn’t believe that the tax incentives signficantly affect it, he is keeping an eye on the numbers.

“If the [property] values were really beginning to shift, that’s a red flag and we’d start to look at the value of our 6B program,” he said.

Reimagining special needs for better opportunities

Today we can point to examples of the progress that bring people together

Many self-advocates in our special needs community, myself included, are redefining what it means to have special needs. This week, as we begin a new year, let us reflect on what it means to have special needs and what redefinition of special needs can mean to the mainstream community. Together, as we look at the state of special needs, we can redefine new opportunities, and enhance current ones, helping to bring full inclusion to our community. Eliminating division and decreasing challenges within our community will mean the ability for us to dream and to support each other’s dreams.

Twenty-eight years ago was a different time filled with much frustration for those of us with special needs. In my early years, I had lots of developmental therapies that helped me develop and, to some degree, avoid frustration in my communication. I, like others my age, didn’t have access to as many resources as are available today to help us with communication. One therapy that I had included taught me a small amount of American Sign Language (ASL). According to my mom, there seemed to be only a few professionals that were using ASL at the time with hearing children. They were signing only minimally and not encouraging the families to embrace ASL fully.

In my early years, “we didn’t realize that, had we as parents used sign language with you, even though you could hear, we could have helped you avoid much frustration and helped you develop faster,” said my mom Linda.

If only 28 years ago there had been an innovation such as Signing Time, then my family could have learned ASL alongside me and thus helped me avoid so much frustration with communication. Signing Time, a video series promoting ASL to eliminate communication barriers, was created 15-years ago

by Emmy-nominated host Rachel Coleman.

Today, after a quarter-century since my early years, times are slowly making some progress. As many parents receive a diagnosis of a disability when their

baby is born, doctors tend to present this as tragic. It is, of course, a very scary time for families. Many times, families within our special needs community spend months or more in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), or the “Baby ER” as Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes says in his book of the same name.

Often in the special needs community we end up divided among all the various types of disability diagnoses: from the deaf community to the Down syndrome community and everything in between.

This division within our community can originate from a lack of understanding.

This misunderstanding of those of us with special needs can then lead to a lack of acceptance and exclusion within society. In my early years I dealt with tons of frustration in communicating my wants and needs and personality.

Today we can point to examples of the progress that bring people together.

Through the work done by nonprofits like my own Special Chronicles, nationally like Signing Time and Miss Amazing, and, internationally like Special Olympics, positive change in the disability community is redefining what it means to be diagnosed with special needs. Today, we are seeing those of us with special needs in the workplace; at your local grocery store, coffee shop, and even as a newspaper columnist. Through movements like Special Olympics and Special Chronicles, we create a culture of understanding that leads to acceptance and inclusion for people of all abilities.

As future families have children with special needs, “it is going to be different,” said Diane Compton, mother to a daughter with Down syndrome. “Maybe hard times, but it doesn’t have to be a tragedy.”

An innovation that has made a tremendous impact and eliminated communication barriers for Diane’s daughter, Erin, was Signing Time.

“What I love about our Signing Time events, they’re unlike anything any-

where else,” said Coleman. “Because even as families who have children with special needs, we divide ourselves up like ‘oh I’m going to the deaf stuff or we’re going to the Down syndrome Buddy Walk’ but we still divide ourselves up.”

This year, we must redefine opportunities for people with special needs.

One can do so in innovative and creative ways. In redefining opportunities we create a culture where diversity is not just appreciated, it’s celebrated. Amy Wright, in Wilmington, N.C., started Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, a coffee shop that employs over 40 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This unique coffee shop is “pouring it forward” as their advertising says and is evident by the over 10-million views video produced by Southern Living magazine and posted on Facebook.

Special Chronicles, a nonprofit, new media network that I created to give respect and voice to people with special needs, has redefined what it means to have special needs. In creating a media platform that reaches over 38,000 viewers in over 85 countries, I am redefining opportunities not just for myself but many others across our nation as contributors and on-air personalities.

“Full inclusion means the ability to dream and to support each other’s dreams and to dream big,” said Compton about Special Chronicles.

Although we had come a long way before the Americans with Disabilities Act when those with special needs were hidden away and institutionalized, our work must continue. This is especially true in light of news of possible attitudes of President-Elect Trump. We must create more understanding and education about what it means to be diagnosed with disabilities which will lead to more employment of those of us with disabilities.

Join me and let’s redefine what it means to have special needs. Together, we can create full inclusion by supporting the ability to dream big.

POLICE Information in Police Blotter is obtained from the Niles, Morton Grove and Park Ridge police departments. Individuals in the Police Blotter who have been charged with a crime have not been proven guilty in court. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

NILES Outstanding warrant arrest Christopher Stachon-Groblowy, 22, Niles, was picked up on an outstanding warrant out of Des Plaines on Dec. 16. Des Plaines police had contacted Niles police to serve the warrant “for failure to appear” in court and picked up Stachon-Groblowy at his residence, police said.

Theft Sehila S. Walters, 19, of Chicago, was charged Dec. 13 with theft from her place of business. The thefts occurred on two separate dates and totaled $340, police said.

MORTON GROVE DUI Emil Simmons, 42, of Chicago, was charged Dec. 22 with driving under the influence of alcohol on Dempster Street and Central Avenue. Police said Simmons struck a snow bank with his vehicle and allegedly failed sobriety tests.

Ahmed H. Al Abrashee, 26, of Chicago, was charged Dec. 23 with driving under the influence of alcohol in the 5900 block of Oakton Street. Police said Abrashee allegedly failed sobriety tests after he was stopped for a traffic violation.

Georgette P. Simpson, 34, Chicago Ridge, was charged Dec. 25 with driving under the influence of alcohol in the 5800 block of Shermer Road. Police said Simpson was stopped for a traffic violation and allegedly

failed sobriety tests.

Isreal Romero-Flores, 28, of Chicago, was charged Dec. 24 with driving under the influence of alcohol on the Dempster and School streets. Police said he allegedly failed sobriety tests after being stopped for a traffic violation.

Harassment Tarun R. Goyal, 39, of Morton Grove, was charged Dec. 19 with harassment and resisting a police officer.

Leaving the scene of an accident Timothy Fish, 30, of Des Plaines, was charged Dec. 26 with leaving the scene of an accident on Golf and Waukegan roads.

Police said Fish was involved in two accidents, at Golf Road and Harlem Avenue, and at Golf and Waukegan roads. He allegedly left the scenes of both accidents, police said, and was charged with reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

Theft Edyta Kikosicka, 43, and Sandra Kikosicka, 23, both of Chicago, were charged Dec. 17 with theft following an incident in the 7200 block of Dempster Street.

Police said they left allegedly left a store with a cart full of items without paying for the merchandise.

Criminal Damage Husam Nahhas, 22, of Morton Grove, was arrested Dec. 27, for criminal damage after a verbal argument with family member on the 7100 block of Church.

Suspect broke multiple windows in the house and a television receiver.

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Ali I. Awaoda, 20, of Lincolnwood, was stopped Dec. 30 for a violation on the 7000 block of Golf Road and was fond to be in possession on drug paraphernalia. He was issued a Morton Grove ordinance citation for possession of drug

DUI/ Misdemeanor Speeding Jeffrey A. Nelson, 33, of Morton Grove, was stopped on the 5900 block of Dempster Street on Dec. 31 for a traffic violation and was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was also charged with misdemeanor speeding.

Possession of Cannabis Tyler Lauer, 19, of Des Plaines, was speaking with officer on the 9500 block of Waukegan Road and officer could smell an odor of cannabis. When he was asked if he had cannabis on him he told the officer he had a couple of grams in his vehicle.

Lauer was issued a Morton Grove citation for possession of cannabis under 10 grams.

Hit and Run Jeffrey A. Nelson, 33, of Morton Grove, was involved in an accident; he was arrested Jan. 4 for leaving the scene and resisting arrest.

Criminal Defacement On Dec. 28 a report was made about graffiti on a sign and the AT&T box at the end of the alley on the 5900 block of Capulina.

Theft Complainant stated he was supposed to have a packaged delivered by USPS Dec. 29. The tracking information showed it was delivered to the 9200 block of Harlem Avenue; however, he never received the package.

Burglary-Residential Complainant stated on Jan. 2, a newer model red SUV parked in her driveway and someone knocked on the door on the 7600 block of Greenwood. Offender stated he was building a privacy fence in the neighbor’s yard and needed to get into the back yard. Complainant led the offender through the house and into the backyard where they spent approximately five minutes. Offender ended the conversation abruptly and exited the residence. Offender was speaking another language on

a walkie talkie throughout the encounter. Later it was noticed that things in the bedroom had been disturbed and drawers were rummaged through.

Complainant reported jewelry and money was missing.

Suspicious Incident Complainant stated on Jan. 2, three male subjects knocked loudly at her front door on the 7600 block of Churchill. About 30 seconds later they knocked again, she was not expecting anyone so she turned on some lights and refused to answer the door. The three subjects got into a newer model burgundy colored small Kia SUV. The vehicle was parked on the west side of the driveway so that is all the descriptors she was able to get.

Burglary-Vehicle Complainant stated she parked her car Jan. 3 in the parking lot of the strip mall on the 7900 block of Golf Road, to go to work. Someone had notified her that her driver’s side door window was smashed. She went to her vehicle and noticed the window smashed and that she was missing two expired passports, a checkbook, and a pair of sunglasses.

PARK RIDGE Battery Ataullah Mohammed, 40, of unincorporated Maine Township, was charged with battery on Dec. 29 after police said he struck another man in the face inside McDonald’s, 1032 N. Northwest Highway, during an argument.

Suspicious activity Police were contacted after home security video on the 600 block of Babetta Avenue reportedly captured a man taking pictures of a house and walking around the outside of the residence on the afternoon of Dec. 22. Police said the man was accompanied by a second man, who was driving a car

that pulled into the home’s driveway. According to police, the video also captured portions of a conversation between the men, in which one of them appeared to say, “You can pry the door if you want to pry it.”

There were no signs of entry to the house and nothing was reported stolen, police said. The men were reportedly last seen walking up the driveway to a neighboring home.

Residents of a home on the 1000 block of Cedar Street contacted police on Dec. 24 after someone rearranged their lawn nativity scene and used a yard sign post to make it look like one of the figures was in a “guillotine,” police said.

Theft The rear license plate of a trailer parked on the 800 block of North Northwest Highway was stolen between Dec. 4 and Dec. 23, police said.

A tablet computer was reported stolen Dec. 25 from the counter of a business on the 800 block of Higgins Road.

Someone attempted to take a bicycle from an attached garage on the 100 block of East Cuttriss Street, but left it on the lawn on the morning of Dec. 27, police said.

Burglary to Vehicle A car that was parked and locked on the 2200 block of West Crescent Avenue was burglarized between Dec. 27 and Dec. 28, police said. Nothing was reported stolen.

A wallet and I-Pass transponder were stolen overnight between Dec. 27 and Dec. 28 from an unlocked car parked on the 1100 block of West Prairie Avenue, police said.

Niles West coach Bob Williams retiring at the end of the season

Niles West boys basketball coach Bob Williams will retire from teaching and coaching at the end of this season, ending a career that began while still a junior in college and has witnessed him record 37 years in a classroom and on a bench, the last 26 years as a head varsity coach.

Williams joined Niles West eight years ago after resigning from Schaumburg where he had coached the previous 18 seasons.

And while his career as a head coach may be coming to an end, Williams is as focused as always on the 2016-17 version of the Wolves.

“We have lost a few close games that have changed a few things for us,” he said. “The great news is I love this team and I love the kids. Their focus, their worth ethic – they are working at it and we are getting better, we just haven’t gotten over that confidence hump yet. As soon as we do, I think we will start to finish games a lot better and our record will improve in a hurry. The great thing is there is no dissention.

There has been no negative talk.

We are on the same page and we are working together.”

Although he knows it is his final season, Williams said he isn’t the type of guy that looks back

when there is still a need to look forward.

“I am not real good with that kind of thing,” he said. “I tend to focus more on the present and what we need to do and I am sure there will be a point I may regret that, but I am just focused on what we are doing here and now.

I feel a very strong responsibility to the players to do my very best and not take anything away from them. I don’t want to take away from the focus of this team, because there are kids coming to practice every day busting their butts getting ready and I want to do the same for them.

“In 2001 (at Schaumburg) we won the state championship and everyone kept asking me if I thought we would win the state championship and I said, ‘no, but I thought we would win the next game.’ And that is kind of how I look at things.”

However, while he tries to stay focused on the here and now, he admits there are a few moments that were a cause for reflection.

“There have been a few times where things have happened and you stop and say, ‘wow, that was strange.’ Walking out of Pontiac was weird because I have been going there for such a long time,” Williams said. “This summer when we finished the last games of the summer at our place, it was about 10:30 at night SEE ERA PAGE 10

Maine South wrestlers are coming together after return of football players.

State champs bring right attitude to Maine South

The Maine South wrestling team had a problem to deal with heading into the beginning of the season that a lot of program’s deal with – it was missing a core group from its team.

However, the Hawks that were missing were not out because they were injured, sick or ineligible – the athletes that were missing wrestling practice were on the football field winning a Class 8A state championship.

“I am really happy with where we are. We have come a long way in a short time,” said Maine South coach Kevin Hansen. “We have a lot of football guys on the team, which is good because you have a lot of state champions on the team, but they were busy and the bad news is we didn’t have them for the first few

weeks of the year.”

Two of those football players are leading the way for the Hawks, both placing fifth at the Berman Wrestling Classic at Palatine High School.

Jon Halvorsen moved to 13-2 on the season, placing fifth at 182 pounds, while Mike Milito is now 16-2 at 195.

“They had to get their weight under control, conditioning and just get mat time. I feel good with where we are with the new year,” Hansen said. “Halvorsen was a sectional qualifier as a freshman last year and he is looking really strong. He was a football player so he is just now getting back. I think he will have an outstanding rest of the season and Milito at 195 pounds, he was another starter for the football team who is a senior and a captain and he is getting stronger and I think he will have a great year.”

“Matt Schneider (4-4) at 145 or 152 pounds has been wrestling really well, so has Josh Bess (19-6), our 106 pounder. He is a sophomore and is having a great campaign,” Hansen said.

The Hawks will compete in the Niles Notre Dame Regional and continue to the Conant Sectional and Hansen said there is no secret to what the Hawks have to do to compete well.

“We have to have the guys that want to work every day to get better and make their teammates better and that has been great for us this year and we do that almost every day,” he said.

“We had a little bit of time with classes off to reflect and go back at the drawing board and see where we are and we are right where I had hoped we would be.”

Pieces coming together for Notre Dame

As the IHSA Regional is less than a month away on Feb. 6, the Notre Dame wrestling program is getting primed for another run at a regional championship as well as team and individual success at the Conant Sectional.

“We have had some matches that we should have wrestled better in, but our young guys are wrestling well and that is important,” said Notre Dame coach Augie Genovesi. “Every week, we are putting in a new piece of the

puzzle.”

Some of those pieces are already in place and are coming off success at the DeKalb Invite.

Josh Barzowski and Andy Poniatowski each went 5-0 at DeKalb.

“Our 160 pounder Josh Barzowski is looking very good and our 126 pounder Andy Poniatowski is looking very good and Augie Whittington is looking very good at 145, but we have everybody up a weight right now,” Genovesi said.

“After the holidays, the season flies by,” Genovesi said. “We had DeKalb and then we have a lot of state ranked teams in Libertyville, Wheaton North and Deerfield. There is no time to rest ERA FROM PAGE 7 and I put everything away and I was walking out and the gym was dark and it was like one of those commercials. I was walking out and realized next summer I won’t be doing this and I have been doing summer basketball for 37 years.”

Williams said that after he walks away as a coach, he will have to take some time to teach himself again to be a fan.

“It will be a difficult thing because I am so used to it” he said.

Genovesi said the team has the ability to reach where the team wants to be as long as all the athletes stay the course.

“We have to stay healthy and we have to come to wrestle every day at practice. At a private

school, academics are way up there, so that has to be the first thing. But, we cut the kids slack with that. They have the ability to go see a teacher and then get to practice and no one is complaining,” he said. “The parents have more skin in the game because the parents are paying for their

sons to come here and they are trusting us with their sons. They could go to any public school the want but they are paying to here and it is a life learning experience and that is what we are all about.”

If all that holds, Genovesi believes the Dons have a chance to have success.

“We have the ability to win the regional,” he said. “We just need to make sure we have everybody on board and we have to stay healthy and we can’t hurt ourselves academically where we have guys that miss a practice or miss a match or become ineligible.”

years and I can watch football as a fan and it is really fun. If I watch basketball, I start working. I am looking at what out of bounds play they ran and you start trying to scout and pick up plays. I think it will take some time for me to train myself to do that.”

What Williams did do well his whole career is coach.

Heading into this season, he has posted an 83-103 record at Niles West and a 430-258 overall mark.

He won a regional title in the 2010-11 season at Niles West and

while at Schaumburg he led the Saxons to a fourth-place finish in the state in fourth in the state in 1999, an Elite Eight berth in 2006 and a state title in 2000-01, when his team pulled one of the biggest upsets in IHSA title game history when it defeated Eddy Curry-led Thornwood 66-54 in the Class AA final.

Even with all the success as he has had on the court, Williams cherishes the character of his players as much as the wins.

He said that is at the forefront this season as the Wolves battle with a losing record and are coming off an 0-2 Pontiac tournament.

“When you have a team that is struggling character wise, it really drains your energy because you are trying to do all these things to pick them up as well as the challenge of winning and

losing. That is challenging for all coaches,” he said. “On the other side of the coin, even with our record now, I walk out of practice energized because they add energy to what we are doing. That has been a huge blessing for this season.

“We had years we played four games at Pontiac and that is great just with the atmosphere there and we have had a lot of great kids through. We have had awesome kids that have gone on to do great in college and do great starting their careers and kids getting high-powered degrees.”

Once he walks away from the sidelines, Williams said he has not given much thought to what to do with all his free time.

“What will be nice is when I do get to a point where I am not so busy and when I don’t have everything going on, I will have a lot

of time to reflect on the successes and all the things that have happened over the years and all the great kids that have been successful and the great assistant coaches that have gone on to be head coaches and all the wonderful people that I have worked and that have been supportive,” he said. “If I do anything work wise, it will be outside of education because I have been teaching since I was 21 and I would like to do something different, I think. But, I may not do anything and I may just relax and let other people worry about winning and losing. I have no idea yet what I will do. I look at things at right where we are and what is up next. That is now I am personally and I just kind of handle things as they come along.

“I have practice planned out for tomorrow and I know that.”

Free Tax Assistance AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps low and moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older.

Volunteers are trained to assist in filing tax forms and certain schedules, including the Form 1040. Taxpayers with complex returns, or in instances where the counselor feels they do not have adequate training or knowledge, will be advised to seek paid tax assistance. Under the Volunteer Protection Act, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers must stay in the scope of the program and do those returns for which they have received training.

Beginning January 30, appointments can be scheduled for individuals with simple returns by calling the Tax Hot Line, 847-588-8440, between 9:00am and 2:00pm. Appointments begin in mid-February and run through Wednesday, April 12.
