BY IGOR STUDENKOV FOR THE BUGLE esidents from Park Ridge, Niles and Morton Grove joined countless other Blackhawks fans in downtown Chicago to celebrate the team’s championship win.

Despite the festive atmosphere, the day didn’t start off smoothly. By 7:45 a.m., a light drizzle escalated to a downpour, sending men, women and children wearing Blackhawks jerseys inside the Uptown Metra station building in Park Ridge.

Still, the mood remained optimistic.

Bart Smith of Park Ridge said he was still looking forward to the celebration, despite the weather.

“I feel very excited,” he said. “It’s going to be a very great day. It’s going to be a very fun day.”

When asked if the rain gave him any pause, Smith replied with a simple “no.”

“I brought my umbrella,” he added.

Family, friends celebrate McKay-Nealis Park renovations Renovated playground designed to promote physical fitness

The Des Plaines Park District celebrated the grand reopening of McKay-Nealis Park, following the recent completion of a playground renovation at the park.

Don Miletic, executive director of the park district, told a group that gathered for the celebration on May 30 that the park, which has been popular for decades, now has one of the best playgrounds in the district. The crowd included the children and grandchildren of John McKay, one of the two men the park is named after.

“It’s inspiring to have three generations of the McKay family here with us today,” Miletic said.

McKay and Walter Nealis, partners at their Des Plaines real estate and development firm, donated the land to the park district in 1958. They also purchased the original playground equipment at a cost of $3,039.50. Shirley Watson

and Marilyn Bender, who worked with McKay and Nealis from 1972 to 1992 at Century 21 Champions, were also on hand to honor their employers, share stories and enjoy the celebration.

Park Board President, Jana Haas, cut the ribbon to officially open the park, 1755 S. Maple St., along with board commissioners Donald Rosedale, James Grady and Joseph Weber.

“The district has a long history of building great neighborhood parks, and we will continue to make them an important part of a fun, active life in Des Plaines,” Haas said.

The renovated McKay-Nealis playground includes a play structure for 2- to 5-year-olds and a separate structure for 5- to 12-year-

olds. Both have slides, climbers and towers set on an engineered wood-fiber safety surface.

The park district said it is one of the largest playgrounds built by the parks department and the equipment is designed to help children stay physically fit.

For younger children, the playground also features a lumber panel tree house, a wood plank wiggle ladder, and stand-alone musical and creative play panels.

The 5- to 12-year-old play area includes a wave horizontal ladder, an 84-inch belt bridge, multiple slides, a covered platform, and modern monkey bars.

The renovation also included a sand-play area, additional open space, benches, a new picnic table under a gazebo, and walking path.

Supply drive looks to help in-need students Niles Township will hold drive throughout summer By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @NilesILNews

The right supplies are important to any student’s success in the classroom.

The Niles Township announced last week that it will hold a school supply drive for the upcoming school year in order to assist area students in need.

“When school begins, we want all children in the township to have the proper supplies,” Niles Township Supervisor Marilyn Glazer said in a release.

The township is asking residents to drop off No. 2 pencils and colored pencils, scissors with rounded points, 24-count boxes of crayons, colored markers, 1-inch three-ring

binders, and facial tissues and antibacterial wipes, among other supplies.

Tax-deductible donations will also be accepted and used for additional school supply kits, according to the township. Residents who would like to make a monetary donation can mail or drop off a check payable to the Niles Township Food Pantry Foundation.

“This support is critical to

bolster a child’s self esteem and will eliminate unnecessary worry or embarrassment over not having the proper materials,” Glazer added.

All donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the township office, 5255 Main St., Skokie.

Niles prepares Fourth of July celebration Parade route, park district activities announced

Summer has arrived, and the village of Niles is beginning preparations for its Fourth of July Parade and celebration.

The parade will step off from Notre Dame College Prep at 9 a.m. July 4 and end at Grennan Heights Park.

The parade route runs south on Ozark Street to Main Street, east on Main to Harlem Avenue, south on Harlem to Monroe Street and West on Monroe to Oketo Avenue.

Parking restrictions will be placed along the parade route

until 2 p.m., according to the village. Additionally, there will be no parking from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Crain Street from Ozark to Ozanam Avenue, on Ozanam between Greenleaf Street and Dempster Street, on Keeney Street and Kedzie Street from Odell Avenue to Olcott Avenue, and between Keeney and Kedzie on Odell, Osceola Avenue, Oketo and Olcott.

Following the parade, the Niles Park District will sponsor a Fourth of July celebration at Grennan Heights Park, 8255 Oketo, until 2 p.m. Activities included in the celebration include children’s games, face painting, pony rides and a full entertainment lineup, including R-Gang Band.

The village of Niles announced last week that Mayor Andrew Przybylo will name Dennis McEnerney permanent chief of police for the Niles Police Department.

McEnerney, who has served as interim police chief for the past seven months, replaces retired Chief of Police Dean Strzelecki.

The following items were compiled from the official reports of the Niles, Park Ridge and Morton Grove police departments.

Appearing in the police blotter does not constitute a finding of guilt, only a court of law can make that determination.

Przybylo said his decision was based on McEnerney’s 37 years on the force and his proven record of performance.

To the next level Benet senior uses hard work, motivation to earn POY honors

Last year, Benet’s Mark Schuessler failed to make the ESCC AllConference squad as a junior.

That helped motivated him in the offseason to take things to the next level.

That, he did.

Schuessler, a 6-foot, 7-inch outside hitter for the Redwings, finished the season with 457 kills, 131 digs, 29 blocks and 43 aces.

He was also the ESCC Player of the Year and led the Redwings to a regional championship and nearly a sectional win, totaling nearly 60 kills in the two matches.

For his accomplishments, Schuessler is the Voyager Media Boys Volleyball Player of the Year.

“It was one of the best seasons I have ever had,” Schuessler said. “In club this year I had one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. I feel like I improved a lot from last year where I wasn’t even all-conference. I feel like my confidence was never down.

I always played liked my next swing was for the game.”

“Mark is an outstanding allaround player who dominates from every position on the court,” said Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren.

“His athleticism and versatility make him difficult to defend. His impressive kills from the both front and back row, combined with his killer jump serve, make him a force to be reckoned with.”

While Schuessler was strong

throughout the year, it was his playoff run against some of the state’s top competition, which put him over the top.

He was the go-to hitter for Benet in a pair of three-set matches in the playoffs.

“Every time I see that we’re in a tight spot, I tell them to set me,” Schuessler said. “I know I am going to be able to pull it out.”

Brandon Baranski Junior outside hitter from Minooka, he posted 384 kills, 43 blocks and 26 aces.

“He was a captain and a leader who heavily contributed to our offense this season,” said Minooka coach Janel Grzetich. “He led the team in kills and was named to our conference’s All-Conference Team.”

Gian Bobila One of the few question marks that Maine East had going into the 2015 season was whether Bobila, a senior, could take over for all-conference setter Leonard David after David graduated in 2014. Bobila erased any doubts by amassing 654 assists, earning all-CSL North honors and helping the Demons to a recordsetting campaign that included a regional championship.

“He is our general on the court, a player that always has a competitive edge,” said Herrmann.

The Plainfield Central senior setter had 835 assists, 97 blocks and 48 aces for the Wildcats.

“Noah Randall is one of the best setters in the state, and has shown that by leading the Plainfield Central Wildcats to one of their best seasons,” Central coach Alex Hurburt said. “Noah is looking forward to continuing his career playing in the competitive MIVA conference at Quincy University next season.”

“He has matured as a player,” said DGS coach Kurt Steuer. “His skill-set got better each and every year. That has allowed him to become player he was at high school level. He showed great leadership this year.”

Luke Van Eck He tallied 217 kills, 28 aces, 52 blocks and 172 digs for Joliet West during the Tigers’ run to a regional title.

Evan Walsh The Carthage College-bound Walsh was Maine South’s go-to outside hitter, racking up 322 kills.

Walsh was a three-year starter and two-time all-CSL South team member. He added 237 digs, 22 aces and 66 blocks.

“Evan is a true competitor who brings his best to the court,” said Maine South coach Gary Granell.

“He is someone other teams know they have to contain in order to

be successful. It will be difficult to replace a player like Evan, but he has left the younger players a standard to strive for.”

Jon Wheaton Lockport senior tallied 143 kills, 77.5 blocks and 33 digs. He is killed the ball at a 41.1 percent on the season. He was part of the Marist Invite All-Tournament Team.

Gage Wuestenfeld Wuestenfeld totaled 386 kills, 89 blocks and 48 aces this season and was the go-to hitter for Plainfield Central.

“Whether in the front or back row, Gage has had a huge impact on the offense, and has clearly been one of the top hitters in the state,” Hurlburt said.

Men’s soccer reloads, ready to defend title Three Maine South grads among 21 recruits to Oakton Oakton Community College men’s soccer team, the defending Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) champions, hit “blackjack” by recruiting 21 players committed for the 2015 season.

One of the “aces” of that class is Francisco Arellano, a standout defender from Wheeling High

School.

As a senior, Arellano was team captain for the Wildcats and tallied 14 points (six goals, two assists). He helped anchor a defense that posted eight shutouts in 2014 for the MidSuburban East League title winners and also garnered numerous postseason soccer

awards in his final season for the Wildcats.

Arellano, the Mid-Suburban League East Player of the Year, was also named to the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team, MidSuburban League All-Conference Team, and Daily Herald Northwest All-Area Team.

Another stellar recruit includes forward Tony Mosqueda (Leland High School, Michigan).

A three-year starter at Leland, Mosqueda led the Comets to a

20-4-1 record in 2014.

Other incoming players include goalkeepers Erik Sanetra (Maine South) and Luis Sedano (Steinmetz College Prep); defender Sebastian Bielecki (Maine South); and midfielders Daniel Silva (Maine West), Charlie Tolayo (Foreman High School), Maksym Andronenkov (Maine South), Armin Ogorinac (Mather High School), Aiden Donaldson (Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute, Scarborough, Ontario), and Zohaib Khaliq (St. Roch

Metra also made arrangements for fans, adding extra trains before and after the celebrations. For the Union Pacific Northwest Line, which serves Park Ridge, Metra added an extra morning train that made all stops between Des Plaines and Chicago.

For the Milwaukee District North Line, which serves Morton Grove, Metra added two morning trains.

While Metra ran several express trains in the afternoon, none of them stopped in either Park Ridge or Morton Grove.

To speed up boarding and ticketing, Metra allowed riders to buy $5 unlimited-ride, oneday passes valid only for June 18.

Although the rain persisted as Smith and other Park Ridge riders arrived in Chicago, it subsided by 9 a.m.

The celebration began with a parade that started in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Racine Avenue, continued east on Washington, turned south at Des Plaines Street and continued north on Monroe Street until it reached Michigan Avenue.

The celebration continued with an 11 a.m. rally at Soldier Field. Park Ridge fans who attended the parade said they enjoyed the experience.

“It was great,” said Jeremy Starzec. “There were just so many people. [My friends and I] were all very excited to celebrate our team.”

Austin Mose said the Blackhawks’ win and celebration is shared by fans throughout Chicagoland.

“It’s really cool to see people from different suburbs and stuff brought together by this,” he said.
