Hospice holds service, balloon release Hundreds gathered Aug. 27 for Joliet Area Community Hospice’s annual Interfaith Memorial Service and Balloon Release

Hundreds gathered Aug. 27 for Joliet Area Community Hospice’s annual Interfaith Memorial Service and Balloon Release. The program aims to provide a space for individuals grieving for people who died in hospice between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 to reflect on the lives of their loved ones.

“It’s for any one who has participated in our programs,” said Mary Ann Burns, director of bereavement services for Joliet Area Community Hospice. “The idea is to remember their loved ones. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate.”

The program began with an opening song performed by musicians Ken Plese, Janet Russ and Mike Zolecki and subsequently

“Thank you for being here today,” she said. “I know this isn’t easy for you. It takes a lot of courage to come… Here, you’re in a safe place to grieve the way you want to grieve and be accepted for how you grieve. Please keep in my mind your loved ones who died and [your] family.”

Four grief candles were lit during the ceremony to represent the grief, courage, remembrance and love that people will share for loved ones who died.

Ahead of the interfaith memorial service, attendees wrote letters to their loves ones, and later they attached their messages to balloons.

ritual to remember their ones,” Burns said.

Burns said people often think they’ll forget their loved ones when they die, but she believes programs, like the Interfaith Memorial Service and Balloon Release, serve as reason to beg to differ.

“It’s great to see people share a ritual to celebrate their loved ones,” she said. This year, event

organizers had approximately 300 people pre-registered for the program.

“They like to connect,” Burns said. “We like to connect with them. They get to connect with their loved ones.”

The program was made possible thanks, in part, to a number of volunteers.

Betty Mahoney, a volunteer for

Joliet Area Community Hospice, said seeing the program come together was nice to see.

“It was really great because it brings me back to the time three years ago when my husband passed away,” she said. “I can feel what these people feel.”

By the program’s end, attendees of all ages gathered outside to release their balloons in unison.

Forest preserve seeking volunteers to pluck seeds Each fall, volunteers and Forest Preserve staff walk through forests, woodlands and prairies plucking seeds from the precious plants that grow there. It’s all part of an effort that began in the 1990s to harvest homegrown seed for preservation restoration. If you’re interested in helping with this effort, fall seed collection workdays begin September 12 (see the full list below).

After the collection workdays, seeds are planted either in a new area of the same preserve or in a similar preserve that has the same habitat and microclimate. Keeping the seeds local maintains a plant’s genetic integrity, said Juanita

Armstrong-Ullberg, the Forest Preserve’s natural resource land manager.

Collecting seeds is relatively easy. Volunteers and staff pull or strip seeds off of plants with bare or gloved hands, or they use hand clippers to snip off the seeded portion of plants before dropping them into a bag.

“Both methods are easy once you know what the seed looks like,” Armstrong-Ullberg said.

The rule of thumb is to leave onethird of the seeds behind to ensure that when the existing perennials die, there is enough seed to populate the preserve with new plants.

“Nine years ago, our office partnered with Will County Take Back the Night when one of our clerks lost her daughter to do-

mestic violence. We felt the need to help, take action and do something, so our annual fundraiser was born.

Troy Crossroads Elementary renamed Troy Crossroads Elementary School renamed Troy Cronin Elementary School Troy Crossroads Elementary School will officially become Troy Cronin Elementary School in a rededication and ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held at the school Wednesday, September 13, at 5:30 p.m. The Troy Community School District 30-C board of education approved the name change last year to honor the school’s history and heritage.

“We are fortunate throughout our history that our community has strongly supported us in education,” Troy Superintendent Dr. Todd Koehl said. “Events like this remind us of the importance of community partnerships.”

“As a school community,” said Principal Jill Howard, “we have developed a new theme that sums up our thoughts about the new school name, Troy Cronin: At the Crossroads of Excellence and Tradition.

Our students, staff and families are excited for the new beginning and this connection to our place in history.”

The Cronin family has served

education in the area for many years. Early farming homesteaders, their commitment to education in Troy began in 1863 when the John Cronin family donated an acre of farmland for a one-room school house, which was named Cronin School.

Nellie Cronin, granddaughter of John, taught at Cronin School, and another family member, Teresa Cronin, later taught at other Troy schools. In 1950, Cronin School was closed, and in 1971, Teresa Cronin Elementary School, a larger K-5 school, was built on land just west of the original Cronin School. The building became Troy Junior High School in 1975, then became Troy Crossroads Elementary School in 2001 when Troy Middle School was constructed.

The original one-room Cronin School is currently located at Joliet Junior College, where it has been turned into a living history museum. Descendant John Cronin is one of the curators. Members of the Cronin family will attend the reded-

Troy 30-C School Board VicePresident Dr. Cynthia Rasmussen Grabavoy spearheaded the name change last year, and the measure was unanimously approved.

“It is an honor to be able to bring the Cronin name home,” Grabavoy said. “We are grateful to the Cronin family not only for their commitment to education, but also for their service to our community. I am pleased that the Cronin legacy will continue.”

The rededication and ribboncutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 13, at 5:30

p.m. and will include the Troy Fire Protection Honor Guard, musical performances by Cronin fourth grade students, honored guests, refreshments and activities.

The school, located at 210 E. Black Road in Shorewood, educates

pre-K through 4th grade students and is one of seven Troy District 30-C schools.

Mayor, trustees ready to move past gas pump flap Matter first took center stage at a village board meeting held after the April 4 election

To help Shorewood officials in focusing on the business of the board, Mayor Rick Chapman took steps at an Aug. 22 meeting to address the legal findings from the fuel pump probe. The matter first took center stage at a village board meeting held after the April 4 election.

“I apologize to past board members and to these board members for anything that was said that accused them of not doing their job,” he said. “That’s not true. There was no way to see anything like that in written reports, and it was unfair that they were told they didn’t do their jobs right.”

Chapman wanted it to be clear that “the buck stops here.”

“I used the wrong procedure, and in doing so, I apologize for that,” he said.

Trustee Daniel Anderson asked that the board seek $500 in compensation from the mayor to resolve the matter and leave it at that.

Trustee Daniel Warren agreed.

“We need to move on,” he said.

The independent investigator’s report suggested that Chapman extend apologies to the village administrator, staff and the public, issue payment in the amount of $2,252.98 to the village and put the matter to a vote of censure to allow the board to document his actions formally.

Trustee Clarence “CC” DeBold wanted the board to follow the attorney’s five-part set of recommendations.

“I agree that the mayor did use some of that for village business,” he said. “I know the original opinion from the attorney was reduced from 30 percent to 40 percent.”

DeBold suggested that officials knock off 50 percent.

Chapman said that would be “OK” with him.

over creation of committee for community center After the board’s decision to establish a committee for a community center, Trustee Daniel Anderson called into question the village’s direction.

“I guess I’m little confused on which way we needed to go with different things around here,” he said. “Are we going to g with a community center? Are we going to do a public works facility? Or, are we going to do a police station?”

Anderson wanted the board to consider the village’s needs. “I’d like to have a prioritized list of what this town needs,” he said.

Chapman said the committee’s work is meant to gauge the community’s interest and inform the board.

Trustee Anthony Luciano questioned if the board should be looking into constructing a new public works facility.

Chapman said the community center has been an idea for 25 years and he wanted to know what’s wrong with forming a committee for the community center and said they have no authority to make decisions.

“We need something in town here that these kids and just the regular citizens can go to in the winter time,” he said. “When the weather goes bad, they’ve got no place to go but out of town.”

Luciano questioned why the board was never informed the mayor was thinking of forming the committee to begin with.

Trustee Barbara “Cookie” Kirkland asked that the board be involved in such decisions moving forward.

Chapman said the board was informed and he intends to pull minutes as proof at their next meeting.

Anderson said he thinks the committee will be “helpful,” but he thinks a needs study is warranted, as well.

The board came to a consensus that they need to gather information to determine the community’s needs.

Appointment of village clerk approved Also at the meeting, Shorewood’s Diane Lambert was appointed to serve as village clerk.

Lambert said she looks forward to working with the board.

“I think it’s in my [realm] of what I do at work as far as looking over ordinances and stuff like that and getting them all prepared for yourselves to look at,” she said. “I’ve done a lot with covenants and restrictions for subdivisions that my husband has developed, so it’s kind of in my work skillset. I hope I do a good job for you.”

Lambert currently works as a real estate broker for Coldwell Banker in Shorewood.

Don’t let your car drive you to be crazy It’s time to clean out and organize your car Is your car like a time capsule, revealing the history of past meals, meetings, and shopping excursions?

Is air conditioning your only cooling option because rolling down the windows would cause a tornado of flying papers? If so, it’s time to clean out and organize your car.

CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER Using a couple of boxes and a trash bag, pull everything out of your car.

Use one box for things that will go back into your car, the other for things that belong elsewhere, and the trash bag for everything else.

USE CONTAINERS AS APPROPRIATE When putting things back in your car, you can use visor and back-of-theseat organizers for sunglasses, CD’s, pens, etc., and a mesh laundry bag over the back seat for a variety of other items. Keep store gift certificates and coupons in an envelope in your door pocket or glove compartment so you’ll have them with you when you need them and won’t be sorry they’re at home on the refrigerator. Store items

you don’t need as frequently in a milk crate or a box in your trunk. Keep valuables out of view so curious eyes can’t see them and be tempted to break into your car. And be sure to have a designated container (other than the seat or floor) to stash trash.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Keep an umbrella under the passenger seat, and a flashlight and extra batteries in the door pocket or glove compartment. Consider keeping an emergency supply of water and snacks in your car proper so you can access them in case you’re stranded in an accident and can’t get to the trunk. Besides tire-changing supplies (including safety flares), your trunk can house jumper cables, a snow brush and shovel & extra cold-weather clothes (I keep these in the trunk year-round so I don’t have to remember to load them in November), a blanket, first aid kit, sunscreen, and bug spray.

MAKE IT EASY TO GET ITEMS TO AND FROM YOUR CAR I keep a collapsible mesh bag with handles in my car for depositing items that need to go into the house. When I arrive home, it’s easy to grab the bag and carry it around the house as I put things away. I also put things to go into my car in this bag (library books to be returned, dry cleaning, etc.) to easily

transport these items out to the car.

You can also use a cardboard box, collapsible plastic crate, or laundry basket.

REMOVE UNNECESSARY STUFF EACH TIME YOU ARRIVE HOME This includes trash, store purchases, sporting equipment (unless you’ve made a conscious decision to store it in your car), receipts, etc. If you do this regularly, things won’t pile up and get lost in a messy car jungle.

Not only will cleaning out and organizing your car reduce distractions and make you feel good, it will prevent those embarrassing moments when you can’t give someone a ride because there’s no room in your ride.

Joliet Area Community soars to top again Congratulations to Joliet Area Community Hospice CEO Mary Sheehan, and her dedicated Staff and Volunteers on last Sunday’s, August 27, Annual Memorial and Balloon Release Program.

This year’s program was held at Joliet Junior College and attended by over 400 people. The program is one of many bereavement programs throughout the year to assist those who have lost loved ones deal with that loss.

The program described as an inter-

faith remembrance of our loved ones, began with a prelude series of inspirational music by Ken Plese, Janet Russ, and Mike Zolecki.

CEO Mary Sheehan then offered thoughts concerning loss and JACH’s efforts to assist, followed by chaplain Marguerite Kronberger and staff with a candle lighting ceremony. Following the lighting was a song entitled “Light a Candle.”

Mary Ann Burns, Director of Bereavement Services, offered messages of hope, followed by JACH Music Therapist, Diane Horne, with a musical piece named “Walk With Me.” Chaplain Donald Barrett gave a Blessing of Solace along with inspirational music that lead to the proces-

sion of balloons to the outdoors.

Outdoors Chaplain Jim McGuire asked the crowd to say aloud “We Remember With Love,” along with our loved ones’ name as we released the balloons together. Handwritten messages were attached to each balloon.

The program is very emotional, but allows one an additional avenue to help cope with loss and move toward closure.

The JACH is to be commended for programs such as this, with appreciation for the caring and compassionate manner in which they tirelessly care for our loved ones, along with us, their family.

FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF WILL COUNTY

Preserve receives grant Forest preserve receives PetSafe grant PetSafe, a Knoxville, Tenn.based pet products company, has awarded the Forest Preserve District a $10,000 grant to be used for planned improvements to the Hammel Woods Dog Park in Shorewood. The grant is part of the company’s 2017 Bark for Your Park program, which awards funds to build, enhance or maintain off-leash dog parks around the country.

“We are very appreciative of this grant, and we applaud the company for its efforts to create pet-friendly communities,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer.

The money will help pay

for the Forest Preserve’s new 2.3-acre small-dog enclosure that will be built adjacent to the original 8.5-acre Hammel Woods Dog Park, which opened in 2002 and was the District’s first fenced, free-run dog park.

The Forest Preserve now has five dog parks and a sixth is in the works. Hammel Woods is the only Forest Preserve dog park without a separate enclosure for dogs weighing 35 pounds or less.

Schultz said a lot wasn’t know about the best way to create free-run areas for canines 15-plus years ago when the Hammel Woods Dog Park was being planned and built.

“However, all of our subsequent dog parks have featured separate enclosures for large and small dogs, which is a better configuration,” he said. “And

soon, Hammel Woods Dog Park patrons will have the same choice.”

PetSafe received 215 Bark for Your Park grant applications in 2017, and the Forest Preserve was one of only 25 award recipients. The company has helped fund 64 off-leash dog parks in 40 states since 2011.

“The goal of Bark for Your Park has always been to help communities become better places to live for people and their pets,” said Willie Wallace, chief executive officer of Radio Systems Corp., parent company of PetSafe.

Wallace said dog parks help canines get the proper exercise and socialization they need to reduce behavioral issues, and the parks are a much sought after amenity when people are choosing a new place to live.

MORE Minooka volleyball returns five starters from last season’s state Class 4A second-place team

A season ago, Minooka advanced to the IHSA Class 4A volleyball title match – placing second after a loss to nationallyranked Mother McAuley.

The Indians started the season under the radar and came on strong at the end of the season – this year, however, Minooka will be anything but under the radar.

Minooka returns five starters from the state runners up.

Returning are libero Taylor Baranski, who tallied 583 digs and 45 aces a season ago for the Indians, outside hitter Ali Papesh, who posted 417 kills, 276 digs, 87 blocks and 46 aces, Rocky Perinar, who tallied 330 kills, 67 blocks and 249 digs, Holly Bonde, who recorded 216 digs, 233 kills and 91 blocks and Olivia Klank, who had 103 kills and 104 blocks a year

ago.

“The first day after tryouts we talked about it that we were awesome last year and we want to feed off of that, but now we need to talk about this year,” said Minooka coach Carrie Prosek.

While the Indians do lose only one starter, it was a big loss in setter Brooklyn Bachman. In her senior season last year, she led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to go with 43 blocks.

Bachmann is replaced this season on the floor by sophomore setter Zoey Seput.

“We have a sophomore setter and she is still learning, but she will get there,” Prosek said. “It is a faster paced game than she is used to and she will get there as she learns that.”

Fantasy football column to run all season Who to sit and who to start predictions online each Wednesday As the NFL opens uop another year, that means only one thing to all the sports nerds like me out – fantasy football!

I have been playing fantasy for the nearly 25 years and put a lot of time and effort into the strategy that makes up the game. With this time comes wins – of the three leagues I am in, I am currently a back-to-back champion in two of them. The one I have only been a part of for two years (yeah, they want to kick me out already) and the other am part of a two-man team that has won four titles in six years.

This year I am going to share some my fantasy football knowledge with Voyager Media readersn at www.buglenewspapers.com.

Each Wednesday, I will post a new weekly list of players I would start and ones I would stay away from. This column will be an online staple, but may pop up in print from time to time. Here are my picks for week 1.

QUARTERBACK START - KIRK COUSINS-

REDSKINS Cousins was a surprise to many last season when he passed for nearly 5,000 yards and 25 touchdowns.

He lost a big weapon in DeSean Jackson, but has a healthy Jordan Reed (so far) and Terrelle Pryor, who put up solid numbers a year ago in Cleveland.

Cousins is playing on a franchise tag this season, so he is on a prove-it-and-get-paid, one year deal - All the motivation for him to come out on fire against the Eagles.

If you have other options in week 1, use them – but if it is Mariota or hitting the waiver wire for Tom Savage, Mike Glennon or Brian Hoyer – then stick with Mariota and hope he makes it out alive.

START - JACQUIZZ RODGERS BUCCANEERS

I am a fan and I had him high on my board of mid-round QBs when I was drafting, but after preseason game No. against the Bears, I lowered him a few spots.

I still think Mariota will be better than OK this year with Delanie Walker and Rishard Matthews back and the additions of Eric Decker and rookie Corey Davis – but he did struggle against a Bears pass rush front that is nothing like

If you drafted him – play him.

My hope is that you took him after round 10 and that he is a Flex option for you and not a pure RB1, but if you have Ezekiel Elliott or a rookie runner that you just want to see one regular season game with before riding him, then Rodgers is your guy.

Doug Martin is suspended for the first three games of the season and even if he gets his job back fully when he returns, you have three solid weeks of a talented runner who can catch the ball out of the backfield.

There are conflicting reports all over the place if Martin will even get his job back when he returns from the suspension – even more of a reason to motivate Rodgers into playing his best in week one.

SIT - ADRIAN PETERSON SAINTS Yeah, I know – its Monday Night Football and the once revered

runner returns to face his old team.

In a Hollywood story he may rip off 200 yards and 3 scores, but this ain’t Hollywood. Not only is AP facing one of the top defenses in the NFL, he is still in a pass-happy offense and will share carries with Mark Ingram, the starter last season in New Orleans

WIDE RECIEVER START - MARTAVIUS BRYANTSTEELERS Bryant returns to the Steelers and the NFL after being suspended for a season and right away gets a Cleveland Browns team that just cut a Pro Bowl corner back in Joe Haden.

Not to be lost here is that Haden signed in Pittsburgh and I am sure is sharing coverage secrets with his new squad. In only 21 career games, Bryant has 14 TDs. He is a big WR at 6-foot-4 and should get single coverage all the time as long as Antonio Brown stays healthy. Big Ben is still a solid NFL QB and adding another arrow to his quiver is only going to help that offense.

SIT - CHRIS HOGAN PATRIOTS I know – Tom Brady is throwing the ball and the Kansas City defense isn’t exactly the ’85 Bears, but slow the roll just a bit.

Yes, Julian Edelman is hurt and someone has to take his place.

Hogan seems like the guy – but is he? Will it be Danny Amendola?

Will the Pats go downfield this year and use the speed of Brandin Cooks? Or will they just feature the plethora of pass-catching running backs for the short-yardage throws? Oh, and let’s not forget Gronk is back in the mix.

With so many questions to be

answered, I would wait on New England pass catchers if you can and see how it plays out.

TIGHT END START - MARTELLUS BENNETT - PACKERS The former Bear and most recently Patriot TE has landed in a good spot in Green Bay. The Packers has a running game that consists of a converted wide receiver starting in the backfield.

What does that ultimately mean? The Packers will again be a pass heavy team.

Jordy Nelson will get his catches and rack up his numbers as he always does – but Aaron Rodgers needs to be able to spread the ball around and his new TE is just the guy to help and could be a guy that nears averaging a TD a week.

SIT - JACK DOYLE - COLTS I am fan of Doyle and think he will have a productive season when all is said and done – but let’s not forget it looks like he has Scott Tolzien throwing him the ball right now.

Doyle had only five grabs for 25 yards and no TDs in the preseason, so it’s not like he and Tolzien have found some magic that makes him a must play. Even if by some miracle Luck is back for the opener, you are going to have a quarterback that has yet to practice, let alone play in a game.

Wait until Luck is back and healthy or until Tolzien proves Doyle is a prime target for him.

• Since you probably only should have drafted one kicker and one defense – just play who you have.

Saints women win Holy Cross golf invite The St. Francis golf team won the Holy Cross Fall Invite/CCAC Cup with a two-day score of 679.

The Saints took the crown by 15 strokes over second-place Holy Cross. Four of USF’s golfers finished inside the top ten, while all five ended up in the top 15.

Alex Catalano (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield South) led the way with a third-place finish and tied for the second-best round of the tournament by carding a 75 on Monday. Madeline Karlson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) shot an 81 in the final round to jump up to fourth place overall.

Taylor Prieboy (Channahon,

Ill./Minooka) and Sarah Maddox (Braidwood, Ill./Reed-Custer) finished seventh and eighth respectively, while Erica Long (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) rounded out the Saints’ competitors by tying for 13th.

USF has a weekend off before playing at the Olivet Nazarene Fall Invite September 8-9.

• The USF men’s golf team opened its season by placing third at the Holy Cross Fall Invite/CCAC Cup. The Saints finished the twoday tournament with a score of 596, just two shots back of second place Indiana-South Bend

and seven behind the champion Holy Cross.

Rafe Lawson (St. Cloud, Fla./ Osceola) and Cam Pyle (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) led the way for St. Francis, both finishing the tournament tied for eighth place with a total score of 149.

Brandon Brodzinski (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) tied for 12th just one stroke back of his teammates.

Jason Chobar (Plainfield, Ill./ Minooka) finished tied for 16th and Jake Hulbert (Morris, Ill./ Morris) rounded out the Saints finishers by tying for 22nd.

pete at the Olivet Nazarene Fall Invite September 8-9.

• After a 2-0-1 week, the St. Francis men’s soccer team swept the first group of weekly Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference awards. Kelvin Ndlovu (Alberton, South Africa/ Truman College) was named the CCAC’s offensive player of the week, while Carlos Ferrer Coto (La Fresnada, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio) earned defensive player of the week honors.

Ndlovu, a junior forward, scored three goals and tallied an assist in helping the USF offense score 12 times this week.

He scored the Saints’ first goal of the new season in a 1-1 draw against Taylor and then added five points in USF’s 9-0 win over Lincoln Christian.

Ferrer Coto, a freshman goalkeeper, went 1-0-1 in net during the week. He made a couple of game-saving stops in overtime during the Saints’ tie with Taylor.

He then earned the win with one save against LCU. In total, Ferrer Coto stopped six shots in 170 minutes of action last week.

The Saints look to remain unbeaten when they host William Woods University this Sunday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m.

For the tournament, Papesh tallied 41 kills, 10 aces, 21 digs and 13 blocks, while Perinar posted 47 kills, 9 blocks, 23 digs, Bonde had 29 kills, 10 blocks, 21 digs, Baranski had 67 digs, 6 aces, while Seput posted 93 assists, 18 digs and seven aces.

“We knew coming in that we had a target on our backs, but we didn’t talk about it,” Prosek said.

“But after that loss to another really good private school, we realized that we can be stopped. We knew that last year no one knew who we were and this year, everywhere we walk, teams are looking at us. We just have to play with the same support, chemistry and confidence that we learned last year. We know that every team wants to beat us and a lot of them just want to win a set against us.”

After the loss, the Indians had

another challenge in area rival Joliet Catholic Academy 25-22, 25-18.

In that win, Perinar posted 12 kills, 4 blocks, 6 digs, Seput tallied 23 assists, Baranski had nine digs and Klank and Sammantha Hermann four blocks each.

“They are one of our biggest rivals and they still are and always have been one of the best defensively sound teams in the area and the state. So, it was a nice win,”

Prosek said. “They are all friends on and off the court, but they are still a rival, so it is one of the biggest matches for our program.

We have really good leadership and the kids that play never look differently at the kids that don’t.

Husband needs plan for down time Baby Step 3 is not a fill-in-the-gap measure for income you already know won’t be there DEAR DAVE, My husband opened his own commercial painting business in May. He knows he will have about three months in the year where he’s making little to no income.

We’ve gotten $1,000 set aside for our Baby Step 1 beginner’s emergency fund, but because of that down period he would like to skip paying off all our debt except for the house, which is Baby Step 2, and move to Baby Step 3 and put an emergency fund aside. I can understand his thinking, but I wanted your thoughts on the idea.

MELODY DEAR MELODY, Baby Step 3 is not a fill-in-thegap measure for income you already know won’t be there. Baby Step 3 is an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, and the scenario he’s talking about is not an emergency. He knows it’s coming, so it is not an emergency.

I think he needs to re-work his business model. This guy needs something to do during those three months, so he doesn’t drop off to no income. Also, if you’re going to set some money aside for a down time, that would not be Baby Step 3. It would be a line in the budget where you’re setting some money aside, because you know a problem’s coming.

If something happens around the same time every year it becomes predicable, and it’s not an emergency. So, it’s not really a mat-

ter of the order of the Baby Steps.

You budget for this down time, or even smarter, figure out a plan for his time during these months, based on his skill set, that will earn some money!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’m debt-free except for my home, and I’m about to start Baby Step 3 of your plan. I will be back on active duty in the Navy soon, and they provide certain types of relief funds for its members depending on where you’re based and other factors. With this in mind, how should I approach Baby Step 3?

BRAD DEAR BRAD, For Baby Step 3, I tell folks to have three to six months of expenses set aside in an emergency fund. You have incredibly stable employment, so you would probably be okay on the three-month side of that equation. And you wouldn’t need quite as much emergency fund money as if you were a straight commission salesman.

However, my guess is you’ll still

have emergencies that will be your responsibility to cover. Everyone needs an emergency fund, Brad.

But in your situation, you’ll probably be okay with one that’s closer to three months of expenses rather than six months of expenses.
