Timbers of Shorewood to host ballroom dance event Ballroom Dance with The Del Bergeson Orchestra The Del Bergeson Orchestra will provide the music for a ballroom dance, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, September 20 at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Road. The public is warmly welcome to the free event.

Members of the orchestra are 25+ year music professionals, each with a deep passion for music and entertaining. Several members are music instructors teaching at the university level.

Del Bergeson, director of the orchestra, has experience and talent. During his school years, he was involved in directing numerous theater orchestras, and he sang as part of several vocal and swing ensemble projects.

Along with playing for the Old Chicago Mall Circus Band and the Shiners Circus Band for two seasons, Bergeson played with artists Don Shire and Dave Boyer, and for 11 years, he was with Perfect Union, a ten member ensemble.

He’s performed with Pyramid as part of a Chicago style horn section, the Bill Gerald Orchestra and most recently with the Jay Mau Orchestra, with whom he played trombone and sang several of the Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis Jr. standards.

Vocalist Sandi Haynes has a voice that mimics the torch songs of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. For the past 18 years, Haynes has been performing in the Chicagoland area with many great Chicago orchestras including the Pete Ellman Big Band and the Brass Tracks Jazz Orchestra.

“The Timbers’ ballroom dances are filled with music and contagious energy,” said Linda McClusky, director of activities at The Timbers. “The dance is well attended by the public, and everyone has a wonderful time.”

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community that provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Residents whose needs may change are able to stay in the same place and receive appropriate and compassionate care.

Prison event earns $136K for future needs Tours, future events on tap at historic site

Just weeks after the first large scale event at Joliet’s historic prison, the numbers are in, showing the rehab project at the prison has triggered both local interest and the possibility for future profits.

The city’s prison committee met on Monday, Sept 10, getting updates on the future of the old Illinois State Penitentiary, which hosted its first community get together on Aug. 25.

Deputy City Manager and Economic Development Director Steve Jones, along with members of the Joliet Area Historical Society, updated the committee on the results of sales at the Great Joliet Prison Break-In. The total expenses for the event reached $66,115, with gross income from sponsorships, ticket sales, food and beverage sales, and donations at $202,698. That puts the total revenue from the event at $136,582.

“Since we started this whole process, we’ve always in a position of, what are we going to do. Here is what we did do. We’re actually doing some wonderful things out there and implementation is well underway,” Jones told the committee, adding that the event attracted between 3,000 and 3,500 visitors, with lines for viewing of the cell block and segregation unit lasting up to an hour all the way through 9

We had the kind of turnout and the kind of enthusiasm that we all expected,” Jones said. “We did this for the fun factor of brining the community into the prison, but clearly, the fun factor is part of this because we need to find ways with the restoration and the money that is being spent out there is being sustained.”

Jones added that many of the visitors were local, which means there’s potential to earn more cash if they can generate interest outside the region and into the city of Chicago.

Now, the prison is poised to open to future events.

“This thing will become more of a routine, and hopefully we could replicate this as a fundraiser every year,” Jones said. “People drive by this place for a decade not knowing what they could see, and now they can see. To me that’s exciting, because we have so much more potential.”

Tours of the prison hosted by the Joliet Area Histrocial Society are now underway, with more than 50 tours booked through October.

The site will host a disc golf tournament on Oct. 13 to benefit the historical society’s funds for the site.

The prison was built in 1858 and closed in 2002 when the last of its inmates and most staff were moved to nearby Statesville. After that, the prison fell into a state

disrepair, becoming a hot spot for vandals and even suffering through two fires.

Renovations on the outside of the site began in March of 2009, with the revitalization of the parking lot into a public park.

Members of the committee lauded the efforts of staff and vol-

unteers to renovate the site and increase public interest.

“The finances are just great,” said Councilwoman Bettye Gavin.

“I was really shocked when I saw the numbers. That is awesome, you guys threw a good party.”

The Joliet Area Historical Museum began the first prison tours on the Tuesday immediately after the Saturday event.

The tours are offered three times per week and have drawn interest from schools and Route 66 visitor groups.

A total of 51 tours are prebooked through October.

Meanwhile, the committee also discussed site improvements, noting that clean up of the grounds and graffiti removal have vastly improved the condition of the grounds. The state of Illinois has also added some cash into the fund that provides money to the grant that the city uses for condition assessments, meaning the city will have a little more cash to invest in site cleanup and improvements.

Connections for electricity, water and sewer are also being completed at he site. Parts of the property are wired for security lighting and other lighting, but many areas inside the buildings are only lit via generators.

Water and sewer reconnections are also being completed by public works crews. Once utilities are restored to the site, the gift shop and bathrooms can open.

Members of the committee said they plan to be transparent with the funding so the public and donors will know exactly where the funds are and how they are being used.

Major changes have been underway at the corner of Route 59 and Jefferson over the part year, as the roadway gets a much needed resurfacing and the Crossroads Plaza undertakes a major overhaul.

Now, that new site, set to hold the new expansion of ChickenN-Spice, will change its plans slightly.

Last week, the Village Board approved a change to the plans at Crossroads Plaza, at 150 Brookforest Ave. and 102 W. Jefferson St. in

Shorewood The change was an amendment to the conditional use permit, reducing the size of the phase three corner building from 4,000 to 2,100 square feet, adding 12 parking spaces. The change also adds two feet to the sign in front of the plaza.

Shorewood’s Interim Community Development Coordinator Rod Tonelli said the new site will also add an outdoor seating area.

“We did include a condition within the ordinance, so they can bring back the details of what the furniture, fencing, et cetera is going to look like,” Tonelli said.

“That hasn’t been decided yet, but we’ll review that at a staff level and make sure it’s up to snuff with the quality of the rest of that project, and determine how good it looks.”

The outdoor dining area will sit on the west end of the property.

The board opted to waive the second reading of the amendment and approved it unanimously.

The new Chicken-N-Spice restaurant was initially slated for an August grand opening, but that has been delayed due to site work.

An official grand opening date has not been announced, though the restaurant said the public can expect the doors to open “very soon.”

waste collection events on Saturday, Sept 15, in Wilmington and on Saturday, Sept 29 in Homer Glen.

The events are being offered by appointment to keep participants moving and to better staff the events, said Keane.

This year, there will be an additional electronics-only collection event in Shorewood, just off Rt. 59, on Oct. 20.

All electronic waste collections are in addition to the seven sites that accept electronics year round.

“Totals for the ShareFest Recycle-

polooza are still be calculated, but we know a full semi of Styrofoam was taken, along with 130 yards of wood, nearly 4,000 pounds of scrap metal and several truckloads of donations,” said Keane.

“ShareFest distributes the donations throughout Will County.”

Illinois’ long romance with trains endures Railroads made Chicago, stealing commerce from steamboat hubs like St. Louis, but it’s a love-hate relationship in the suburbs and Chicago today

BY MARNI PYKE OF THE DAILY HERALD Trains brought Abraham Lincoln’s body home to Illinois, transported southern blacks escaping Jim Crow laws to Chicago, and now carry a labor force of thousands between the suburbs and downtown Chicago daily.

Freight, passenger and commuter trains pass through the Chicago area at the rate of 1,300 a day, Illinois Department of Transportation says, and rail lines fan out in every direction.

“People in Illinois are as intimately tied to railroading as anywhere in the country,” DePaul University transportation professor Joseph Schwieterman said. “Millions live close to busy rail lines, use commuter or intercity passenger trains, or cross busy sets of tracks every day, giving them a strong psychological connection to railroads.”

But being the rail hub of the nation also has its downside: Meager funding for commuter rail, crossing delays, and freight gridlock are among the challenges facing the state in the 21st century.

The first train to appear in the Chicago metro region was a Galena & Chicago Union Railroad steam engine dubbed the “Pioneer” in 1848, according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago.

One of its first destinations was the settlement of Elmhurst, foreshadowing a regional commuter rail service under Metra that made 78.6 million passenger trips in 2017.

“Our legacy suburbs developed along the railroads. In many respects they owe the initial growth to the railroads,” railroad historian and Metra Chairman Norm Carlson said.

Prior to railroads, “shipping was the only way to move bulk commodities,” Carlson explained. “‘Interior’ delivery was limited to what the horse or mule

could carry or pull.”

Initially, Midwestern railroads were built to link the nation’s interior with waterways, like the Mississippi River, and St. Louis was pegged as the gateway to the West. Chicago gained traction “in large measure to the access to Lake Michigan,” Carlson said.

Railroads began sprouting like dandelions to feed growing demands.

“From moving crops to market to moving raw materials in and finished products out, the railroads connect the economic activity of the state,” Carlson said.

Schwieterman noted “everyone knows that railroads are a huge part of Chicago’s history, but many don’t fully appreciate that other places, including Decatur, Galesburg, Effingham and Rock Island, were rail junctions of enormous importance, as well.”

As of 2018, the Chicago region absorbs almost 500 freight trains daily or 25 percent of traffic in the United States.

But outdated infrastructure where railway tracks intersect or cross busy roads mean trains can spend as much

time in Chicago as it takes to reach either coast. Efforts to untangle the rail spaghetti — expediting trains and improving safety — will cost $4.4 billion and are about 40 percent complete.

Both Metra and Amtrak are suffering from lackluster funding amid demands for better service from riders.

Yet, despite the budget drought for commuter rail, Illinois’ high-speed rail project to begin service between Chicago and Springfield with speeds of 110 mph is expected to finish this year.

“Chicago remains the workhorse of our country’s railroad industry,” Schwieterman said. “That keeps rail lines in our state unusually vibrant and busy.”

Sheriffs Office warns of ‘Gypsy,’ seal-coating scams Individuals will hit a specific area or neighborhood and once they have worn out their efforts, they pick up and move to the next town or state The Will County Sheriff’s Office has been notified by the Lemont Police Department that residents have recently reported that they have been in contact with asphalt contracting scammers. This type of scam is also referred to as a Gypsy Scam, in that these individuals will hit a specific area or

neighborhood and once they have worn out their efforts, they pick up and move to the next town or state. This group of men approach a home and smooth talk the homeowner into allowing them to reseal their asphalt driveway. These people are very persuasive and typically target the elderly population.

Their sales pitch can include telling the homeowner that they will give them a ‘cut rate price’ just for today; or they were working in the area and saw that your driveway needs resealing. This group usually uses cut-rate products and also asks for payment before they begin in the way of cash or a check made out to cash.

• HERE ARE SOME OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER: • If you did not personally call a seal coating contractor, do not hire one that comes to

your door.

Always sign a contract and do your homework to be sure the contractor is reputable. Just because they may have appropriate work clothing, a truck with a name on it, and sealcoating equipment, does not make them reputable.

If these people come to your door, do not engage in conversation, just shut the door.

If you have elderly relatives or neighbors, please take the time to school them re-

garding this scam. The reason these Gypsies target the elderly is because they can be easily persuaded into trusting them.

• If you see something, say something! Report any suspicious trucks or vehicles in your neighborhood to your local police department.

Although no formal reports have been documented in Will County please be aware that they are in the area of Lemont. These groups are typically transients; they will hit an area and move on to the next town.

AWAY Slammers fall in game four of series, will faced Wild Things in winner-take all game five

The Joliet Slammers lost game 4 of the Frontier League Championship Series against the Washington Wild Things 2-1 Saturday night to tie up the best-of-five at two games each.

The Slammers scored in the second inning with an RBI double from Brian Parreira.

Corey Kimber threw 6 scoreless innings.

A game earlier, the Slammers scored five runs in the third inning with two outs to take game three 5-3.

Slammers tallied four-straight hits to plate all five of their runs in game three.

Justin Garcia singled home a run before Ridge Hoopii-Haslam plated two with a base hit. Trenton Hill ended up with the game-

winning hit, as he singled home Hoopii-Haslam to make it 4-0 and subsequently scored on a double by shortstop Chaz Meadows.

Washington, who was hitless through three, received a twoout, full-count double from second baseman Carter McEachern that scored first baseman Reydel Medina to open the scoring for Washington. In the fifth, left fielder Roman Collins plated a run with a single and Medina doubled home a run to bring it to 5-3.

Nathan Antone earned the win in relief, fanning five in 3.1 innings including getting Hector Roa to fly out to center to end the fifth-inning threat with the tying run on second.

In game two, Joliet won 3-1 Dom Iero, Washington’s third baseman, came within feet of tying the game with a two-run home run in the ninth, but the ball was ultimately called foul before Iero struck out to end the SEE SLAMMERS PAGE 10

St. Francis footba11 earns first win Showcasing a powerful offense and strong defensive pressure, the University of St. Francis football team defeated Quincy University 41-26.

Don Butkus (Dyer, Ind./Mount Carmel Ill.), Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./Peoria), and Dwayne Milton (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) all had big games for the Saints (12). In his first start of the season

under center, Butkus completed 17 of his 25 attempts for 286 yards and four total touchdowns (three passing and one rushing).

Ruffin was his top target, hauling in seven receptions for 159 yards and three scores. Milton finished with 186 total yards (141 rushing and 45 receiving) and a rushing touchdown. USF did not turn the ball over in the victory.

The Saints’ defense put constant pressure on Quincy (1-2), totaling five sacks and 10 tackles for loss. In his first game of the season, Jamal Stovall (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) had the lone turnover of the game, a fourth-quarter interception. Antonio Jameson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield East) totaled a team-high 11 tack-

Kids’ activities, supervised by Will County Children’s Advocacy Center staff, will be provided in Victory Lane. Fall seed collection workdays set By keeping the seeds local, the genetic integrity of the plant is maintained Volunteers are needed for four seed collection workdays that will take place in September and October.

Seed collection takes place from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Seed collection workdays will take place: • Tuesday, September 25: Riverview Farmstead Preserve, Naperville • Wednesday, September 26: Rock Run Preserve – Black Road Access, Joliet • Tuesday, October 16: Sugar Creek Preserve, Joliet • Tuesday, October 30: Riverview Farmstead Preserve, Naperville Seed collection workdays are part of a program that was created in the early 1990s to help with preserve restoration efforts. After the collection events, seeds are

planted either in the same preserve or a similar preserve to foster the growth of native species in as many places as possible.

The seeds are planted in preserves that have the same habitat and microclimate, said Juanita Armstrong-Ullberg, the Forest Preserve’s natural resource land manager.

By keeping the seeds local, the genetic integrity of the plant is maintained, she added.

Collecting the seeds is relatively easy.

Forest Preserve staff and volunteers pull or strip the seeds off a plant with either their bare or gloved hands.

Or they use hand clippers to snip the seeded portions of plants before dropping them into a bag.

About one-third of the seed is left behind to ensure that the existing perennials can regenerate.

Some seeds are collected in the spring by staff.

But the bulk of seeds are collected later in the year. Seeds that

have been collected during workdays are sown in the winter prior to a snowfall.

Volunteers should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and work gloves.

Seed collection will be canceled if heavy rains occur. Bring water and snacks.
