NASCAR legend Richard Petty will be inducted into the Chicagoland Speedway Legends Club as part of an action-packed four-day racing weekend for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup kickoff.

Legends Club has featured some of the most storied figures, families and personalities in the sport. This climate-controlled viewing suite offers an intimate setting with an all-inclusive package of beer and wine, plus two meals per day. Since its inception, the Legends Club has honored and recognized some of the most notable drivers in the sport, including Rusty Wallace, Richard Childress, Fred Lorenza, Dale Jarrett and Brett Bodine.

“It’s safe to say that Legends Club is certainly a comfortable and appropriate home for ‘The King,’ and it’s only fitting that he’s inducted during Chicagoland Speedway’s milestone 15th Anniversary,” said

Chicagoland Speedway President Scott Paddock. “It is truly an honor to have Richard’s storied career celebrated at our facility as we kick off the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup” On Saturday, Legends Club will induct Petty, as he accepts his position in Chicagoland Speedway’s history books. Petty already decorated NASCAR’s illustrious past by winning the NASCAR premier series championship seven times along with a record 200 wins during his storied career.

Statistically speaking, Petty is the most accomplished driver in the history of stock car racing and is one of the most respected figures in all of motorsports. In addition, Richard Petty was included in the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.

“It’s always nice to be recognized for what you’ve done, especially from others,” said Petty. “That means a lot to us, our family and to everyone who has worked with us. It’s always been a team effort and not one single person to make it all happen. I’m just thankful that

Diageo donates backpacks, supplies to Central Key Club ‘Key Club’s mission is to help one child and one community at a time’ In August, Diageo employees presented a donation of 25 backpacks with supplies to Joliet Central High School’s Key Club.

The club was the recipient of Diageo’s 2016 local community outreach project. Backpacks will be distributed to students in need.

Bowers, who grew up in Joliet, said the donation has special meaning.

“During this back-to-school season, I am proud to give back to the community that raised me…,” she said.

The Key Club International is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others.

JTHS seeks help from community on cultural diversity Joliet Township High School said it looking for parents, staff, community members and students to serve as members of what the district is calling “action teams” on cultural and diversity.

Members will develop action plans for a new district strategy on culturally responsive education, as well as faculty and administrative diversity.

School officials said the new strategy resulted from a strategic plan thorough renewal in August. At the time, a strategic planning team comprised of parents, students, community members, faculty, support staff,

administrators and board of education members examined and revised the district’s existing strategic plan.

The action teams will meet once a week on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. on the following dates: Sept. 20 and 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25; and Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 22.

During the meetings, team members will develop action plans for the new strategy.

That strategy states that District 2014 partner with families and the community to “develop and implement plans to deliver a culturally responsive educational experience and expand the diversity of our faculty and administration in order to close the achievement gap.”

All meetings will take place at the JTHS Administrative Center, 300 Caterpillar Drive in Joliet.

Action team members must attend all meetings.

The Joliet City Council last week approved an implementation plan that will look at the efficiency of water and sewer operations to determine what, if any, savings residents can receive on their water bills.

City officials began looking into the matter last October, when officials enlisted the help of Matrix Consulting Group to perform a water and sewer operations efficiency study.

Over the years, residents have seen water rate increases that vary, according to the city.

In 2009, residents saw a 3.5 percent increase. Those same rates jumped to 5 percent in 2010 and 2011.

City Manager Jim Hock said the culmination of activities to adopt an implementation plan means that officials will soon need to consider a water rate change. He added that officials have taken the findings of the

outside consulting firm into consideration.

“Staff has worked to create this implementation of their recommendations,” Hock said. “...And we can report to you on a regular basis the progress we’re making on this implementation plan,” he said.

Jim Eggen, director of public utilities, said from a water and sewer operations standpoint, the city wants to assure the public the city is doing everything possible to keep water rates manageable.

“Overall, the findings were measures to support efficiencies,” he said. “They noted a few items now included on the implementation plan…

I came to the conclusion there couldn’t be much money saved through operational change and that rate change would be needed.”

Eggen noted an area of concern that’s been pointed out to the city is crew size, and said that is one change the union argued against.

eyewitnesses, including victim’s wife Bugle Staff A Joliet man convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting another man in a crowded restaurant in 2013 has been sentenced to life in prison, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

In February, a jury found Christopher Thompson, 33, guilty of shooting Gerrardo Franchini nine times at point-blank range, while the victim was eating breakfast with his wife, 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old niece at Louis’ Restaurant.

According to prosecutors, the

two men had been involved in an ongoing dispute leading up to the incident. After walking into the restaurant and seeing Franchini,

Thompson allegedly walked up to the booth and the men exchanged heated words.

Prosecutors said Thompson returned to the crowded restaurant 15 minutes later and opened fire on Franchini at close range. The victim suffered nine gunshot wounds to his face and body.

Despite efforts to conceal his face, Thompson was identified as the shooter by several eyewitnesses, including the victim’s wife.

On Sept. 7, Circuit Judge Dan Rozak handed down a life sentence, plus 60 years.

“Christopher Thompson committed a crime of unrivaled brutality, and he will never be free to walk our streets again,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said.

At a recent meeting, the Joliet City Council unanimously approved a measure that allows police officers to receive cultural competency and procedural justice training pursuant to state laws.

Over the years, police departments have taken action to ensure that officers are continuing to receive training for cultural concerns.

State law says police departments

must engage in specialized training every three years. The city said full-day diversity training is a need for the police department, even as they’ve provided some of it in small segments throughout the program.

City action allows the police department to contract for eight days of diversity and inclusion training from MulticultuReal Communications and transfer $20,000 from the general fund balance to the 2016 police budget.

American Express card for a number of the city’s large regular purchases a few years ago. The city said Waste Management typically must wait approximately 90 days for their payment from American Express.

To date, Waste Management serves as the city’s largest account with charges amounting to more than $900,000 per month.

In order to receive payment faster, the vendor will provide a check refunding the city 1 percent of the fees that are paid to them by the city of Joliet on a monthly basis. Officials said the city received a refund valued at about $60,000 last year.

The amendment is effective now through the end of the contract on Dec. 31, 2017.

Take Back the Night returns Annual event scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at St. John Lutheran Church For the last 20 years, Take Back the Night has advocated for women who have suffered violence.

Organizers of the Will County Take Back the Night will continue that mission Oct. 16, with the annual event scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 2650 Plainfield Road in Joliet.

Various organizations will be available at resource tables with information to assist victims and

survivors of domestic violence.

The goal of Take Back the Night is provide resources that are available to help those that need assistance, and inform the community of the programs and services available should the need arise.

There will be a pantry accepting donations of paper goods, toiletry items, or grocery store and gas station gift cards to donate to area domestic violence shelters.

Karli Johnson has been selected as this year’s featured speaker.

Johnson, a nationally known speaker and educator on powerbased violence, is a survivor of dating violence, sexual violence, bullying and trauma. She has been a successful leader in violence prevention and promotion for more than six years.

Many local women’s service organizations are involved in the event, which is organized by a committee of dedicated women who want to help educate the community in hopes of ending violence against women.

Petitions for city council candidacy available later this month At-large council members serve full four-year terms Beginning Sept. 20, petitions for candidacy for three at-large positions on the Joliet City Council will be available in the city clerk’s office.

To qualify as a candidate, applicants must be a qualified elector of the city of Joliet and have resided within the corporate limits of the city for at least one year preceding the April 4, 2017, consolidated election. At-large council members serve full fouryear terms.

Illinois law imposes other qualifications to be eligible to submit a petition for candidacy and to serve as an elected official of the city of Joliet. Candidates

should review Illinois law and other related codes to determine whether they meet the required qualifications.

Neither the city clerk nor any other city employee will be responsible for reviewing petitions that are filed during the filing period to determine whether they are in compliance with the law.

Candidacy petitions must be filed with the Joliet City Clerk between Dec. 12 and Dec. 19.

Normal business hours for the city clerk’s office are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will remain open until 5 p.m. Dec. 19 to accept petitions for candidacy.

Next phase of hydrant testing underway The Joliet Fire Department began the second phase of its annual hydrant testing Aug. 31, according to a city news release.

The testing program will be conducted Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and will continue for approximately six weeks.

Testing near Station No. 3 will include the geographical area bounded by Interstate 80 to the north, Gougar Road to the east, Manhattan Road to the south, and South Vetter Road to the west.

Station No. 6 testing includes the geographical area bounded by Theodore Street to the north, Reed Street to the east, I-80 to the south and Infantry Drive to the west.

Station No. 9 testing includes the geographical area bounded by Bazz Drive to the north, Bronk Road to the east, Black Road to the south and County Line Road to the west.

The fire department said it will take precautions to reduce the impact of possible rusty water.

During Phase II, testing will take place in the following areas: • Station No. 3, 450 E. Laraway Road • Station No. 6, 2049 Oneida St. • Station No. 9, 2300 Michas Drive The city of Joliet added that it will provide a chemical that removes rust from clothes in a washing machine. However, residents are cautioned to not dry affected clothes until they have been properly run through a rinse cycle that includes the chemical.

Curriculum, instruction initiatives highlighted at District 86 meeting Summer school attendance rose to nearly 92 percent across 9 schools

Summer school programming, assessments and district resources were among some of the new initiatives discussed during a presentation last week to the School District 86 Board of Inspectors.

Ankhe Bradley, assistant superintendent for curriculum, provided the board with an overview of curriculum and instruction initiatives. Aligning curriculum and instruction to meet standards is a top priority for the district, according to Bradley.

“Our work is around how we are developing and implementing curriculum aligned to the elementary learning standards,” she said. “We are focused on implementing those worldclass instructional design and assessment standards in our curriculum, as well as the Spanish language arts standards.

“We are always analyzing student data to identify the best professional development for our district.”

With regard to summer school, the district saw a number of changes last year.

Tricia Nagel, director of teaching and learning, noted that a new initiative aimed at increasing attendance allowed the program to run on a full-day basis for six weeks.

“We’ve done that,” she said.

“The numbers have gone up.”

School records show that attendance rose to nearly 92 percent across the nine schools that participated in the program.

“Obviously, engagement was there for [the schools] to have such a high attendance rate,” Nagel said.

This past year, a total of 1,096 students were enrolled in summer school. Of them, 81 children maintained grade-point averages at or below 2.0.

Nagel noted that children in the program saw an increase in reading and math skills this past summer, and said part of that success is attributed to the implementation of new resources.

The district used Star 360, which offers assessment tools to guide instruction for general education and English language students, and MyOn, which is a web-based library.

The district also discussed preliminary data from last year’s Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, exams. In 2015, a state mandate required all Illinois schools to administer the test in grades 3-12.

Of that assessment, there were two exams taken in District 86 schools—a performance-based assessment around midterms and an end-of-year assessment.

“We’re seeing some cohort growth in mathematics and we’re seeing that we need additional

support in our transition grades, so that will be third and sixth grade,” Bradley said. “We are continuing to put that additional focus, because our kids will be taking our test online.”

Bradley noted that local assessments through Star 360 have also changed in the last year.

“We’re seeing that positive growth in our grade levels 3-8, with our scale scores, as well as student growth percentiles,” she said.

In 2016, the PARCC examination will only be required for grades 3-8. Bradley said the assessment will be administered once near the end of the school year.

At the high school level, schools will utilize the SAT and ACT as part of Prairie State Achievement Testing.

Nine states will be participating in the PARCC consortium this year, whereas a total of 11 were active in 2015.

Bradley said part of the change is a result of state decisions to employ different testing measures.

Board inspector Deborah Ziech tried to explain her reservations about teachers continuing to administer the PARCC exam in the district’s schools.

“The more states that drop out, the more questions I would have… for the validity of the scores, because you don’t have a large enough sample to truly know if the test is actually reliable,” she said. “There are concerns with that. States, they have a choice; Illinois has a choice.”

The hope, according to Bradley, is that the district obtains a variety of data to ensure its school are meeting the needs of students.

“Crazy drug prices became personal.

My dad will start Keytruda regimen on Friday, $15,000 per infusion, once every three weeks indefinitely.” The high cost of pharmaceuticals had hit home!

Her 61-year-old father, Jim McCallister, who lives in Spartanburg, South Carolina, had been diagnosed with a melanoma discovered during a routine skin exam a few weeks earlier.

It had spread to his lungs. Doctors recommended the drug, which uses the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells and has showed promise in treating aggressive melanomas.

McCallister’s employer-provided insurance is paying for most of his treatment, and the family is looking into Merck’s co-pay program. In the meantime, McCallister faces several thousand dollars of out-of-pocket costs.

McCallister may be lucky cost-wise.

But the fact remains: Somebody is paying for the high cost of Keytruda and other new drugs coming on the market. Sausser said her dad asked if insurance would cover the drug. “The doctor told him they would find some way.”

That’s the nub of the dilemma. For many like McCallister, there may be help, often from the drug companies themselves in the form of patient assistance plans.

Remember drug company AstraZeneca’s ads for some of its costly drugs: “AstraZeneca may be able to help”?

Sometimes state or local government programs, private charities, nonprofit agencies, or coupon programs help patients pay for their drugs. Patients who can’t get help from any of those sources often go without.

Escalating drug prices affect everyone – even those not taking expensive drugs or not on Medicare. High drug prices affect all insurance premiums sooner or later. for the drugs, which pharmaceutical makers can set according to what the market will bear. They can pretty much do whatever they want with little push back from those who end up paying the bills – governments, insurers and patients. The U.S. has no cost controls, and government doesn’t negotiate drug prices the way many other countries do.

So the price of commonly prescribed drugs like the EpiPen, a shot that stops life-threatening allergic reactions, has risen to more than $600 for two pens.

In 2009 two pens cost $100.

The price for Abilify, an antipsychotic, has risen 113 percent between 2007 and 2014, and the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor has climbed 103 percent over the same time period, according to The Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing, a group of employers, insurers, and unions that are trying to raise public awareness of high drug prices.

That helps explain why Medicare recently reported its spending on prescription drugs increased more than 17 percent in 2014 even though the number of claims from the program’s 38 million beneficiaries rose only 3 percent.

Medicare’s prescription drug law was never meant to pay all a person’s drug expenses. This year once a beneficiary and her drug plan have paid $3,310 for medicines, she reaches the coverage gap where she must pay the cost of

most of her drugs. If she spends, out of her own pocket, another $4,850 for drugs this calendar year, she qualifies for catastrophic coverage and pays only 5 percent of all her remaining drugs for the year.

The trouble is that with prices so high, it’s easy to end up in the coverage gap paying out-of-pocket. Even protection offered by catastrophic coverage may not be enough. That’s especially true for people taking highpriced specialty drugs.

In 2013, about 3 million people were in this predicament. “Not a lot of people pay above the threshold, but those who do can pay through the nose,” says Tricia Neuman, senior vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Not long ago I spotted a letter to the editor in USA Today from Heather Block, age 53 who has Stage 4 breast cancer. She was calling for patients to organize and build a network to help craft solutions for the problem of skyrocketing drug prices.

I talked to Block about this. Her zeal and interest in organizing patients reminded me of the early days of the consumer movement in the 1960s when citizens organized to pass legislation to make the marketplace safer and more fair.

With drugs, Block says, it’s hard to organize people because of drug assistance programs that take the sting out of prices and make patients less willing to work against the companies, the presence of disease advocacy groups funded by the pharmaceutical industry, and a general reluctance to speak up for fear of jeopardizing their own health and survival.

Joliet West football team on the verge of an SPC winning streak

Three games into its first season in the Southwest Prairie Conference, Joliet West may not have the record it wants – but the Tigers have also played the top two teams in the league in 3-0 Oswego and 3-0 Oswego East.

The Panthers remained unbeaten on the season with a 7-3 win over West Saturday at Klootwyk Field on Joliet’s west side.

“I hate losing, especially in these tight games, but we are right there,” said West coach Jason Aubry. “We are very close.

Our defense again stepped up and played very, very well. Offensively, we started to move the ball a little bit and then we had errors. I told them about our schedule – these are great teams we are playing.

Oswego East, look at what they are doing, they are 3-0 right now. But it is hard as a kid to understand that and get through that. Heck, it’s tough for me.

the Oswegos, Minooka, Plainfield North, they are going to be dog fights and we came up short in this one. I respect (Oswego) coach (Brian) Cooney. The Panthers struck first in the game, scoring the lone touchdown of the game with 1 minute, 54 seconds left in the first quarter when Anthony Grimes punched the ball in from 1-yard out to make the game 7-0.

West scored in the closing seconds of the first half when Matthew Prieboy booted a 36yard field goal with 16.4 seconds left in the second quarter.

That was all the scoring that would take place in the game.

West had several chances during the second half – forcing three turnovers and moved the ball well between the 20-yard lines, but could not score.

Season looks promising for Porter spikers

After a bit of a struggle last year with a new coach and a young team, this year seems much more promising for Lockport.

A strong start to the season has verified those expectations.

“We want to have a 20-plus win season this year,” Lockport’s JoDee Kovanda said. “Like coach said, we are much more

experienced this year. We really think we can go far with the experience we have. If all of us are all in, which is our saying this year, we will be able to accomplish a lot.”

“Last year our season started off kind of rough and then we picked it up,” Lockport’s Serene Jones said. “I think we have a lot of momentum coming into this year. We have a lot of chemistry this year since we know each other and played with each other

before.”

In addition to the 20 wins, the Porters are also hoping to bring home a regional championship.

“I said this should be a 20-win season and a potential regional championship or even sectional,” Mraz said. “If we’re falling short of that, that is a letdown. I have high expectations of them and so far they are living up to them. It is big for them to get that feeling of winning early.”

Losing just three seniors from

last year and improving the team chemistry have been a big part of the resurgence.

“We only graduated three seniors and the bulk of these girls were the starters last year,” Lockport coach Nick Mraz said.

“That is why I told them with all the experience they got last year, they are a veteran team this year, even though there are still a lot of juniors and some sophomores out there. There are not a lot of teams with their experiences. We

are winning matches we lost last year because of that.”

“Last year we all weren’t that good of friends and we were kind of distant,” Kovanda said. “This year we are all good friends and love each other. I think that is one of the key things, just being there for one another.”

Being in the second year of Mraz’s system has also been beneficial.

“It has gone really good this year,” Jones said. “We are more used to coach this year.”

“There is always that growing pain with that transition,” Mraz said. “So, as the years keep going, it is going to keep getting better.

But in the second year now, we know what to expect from each other and it makes it that much easier.”

Lockport jumped out to a 6-2 record against some tough competition, including the Plainfield North Invite as it played in a lot of matches right out of the gate.

“I load up the front of the season and it absolutely helps,” Mraz said. “I like getting going right away because we know what we need to work on. And seeing those good teams right away shows us where we are at and

Keselowski, however, knows that is not a lock for a championship as he posted the most wins two seasons ago and that did not translate to a title.

“We’ve come into this thing with the most wins in 2014 and a lot of momentum, and I felt like we had some ups and downs. We came in last year with one win, and it all comes down to just the same things,” Keselowski said after a fourth-place finish at Richmond. “This is a dynamic environment. What you’ve done in the past is not necessarily representative of what you’re going to see in the future or what you’re going to be able to do in the future. So you’ve got to keep working and keep your eyes in the windshield, not in the mirror. Momentum is great and it makes you feel good, but it’s a tricky thing to get caught up in it.”

For Busch, he is hoping to build off what he learned last year when he won the championship, but he said some of that was simply good fortune.

“We’ve had good fortune before. Last year we made it through barely each and every round. I think we were the last car to transfer through every

time. Doesn’t matter if you’re the first car or the last car, as long as you get through the next one, you’ve got an opportunity to keep racing for a championship.

That’s what it’s all about,” Busch said. “You know, I feel like the first round’s a good round for us. It’s strong. But you got to have solid finishes and try to minimize your bad days.

“I feel like we kind of are right even with where we were last year, kind of doing the same things. But there are other guys that are better than us. So we’re just going to have to figure out how to out-race them and outfinish them when we need to.”

With the win at Richmond, Hamlin grabs his third win and resets at 2009 points, passing Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Martin Truex, Jr. Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, all who reset with 2006.

Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, Chris Buescher and Tony Stewart all enter the Chase with one win and 2003 points.

For Stewart, a three-time series champion, this is his final shot at No.4, as he will retire at the end of this season.

Stewart’s last title came in 2011 when he advanced to the Chase without a single win and then started the Chase off with a win at Chicagoland, which propelled him to five wins – including the final one at Homestead for the championship.

“What you do up to the start

of the Chase really doesn’t mean anything, obviously.

2011 is proof of that,” Stewart said.

“We’ll get started next week at Chicago, and all I care about right now is getting ready for Chicago and running through Sunday at Chicago. Once we get through that, I’ll worry about week 2. This is a stressful 10 weeks and you take it one week at a time. That’s what we did in ‘11, and it worked.”

While Stewart is leaving the sport, a pair of rookies are headed into their first Chase.

It is the first time since 2006 when Hamlin became the first rookie ever to qualify for the Chase.

This season, Buescher heads in with a win at Pocono, while Elliot joins Austin Dillon and Jamie McMurray as the three drivers to advance without a win during the season.

“I’m very excited to be in.

Congrats to Chris and their group. They had the big win at Pocono. We want to work hard to try to get to victory lane ourselves,” Elliott said. “I think we have a group that can do it and we just got to take these next few weeks and hunker down and give it our best shot.

I appreciate our 3M NAPA group for doing that and we’re excited about these next 10. We have to go in with the mentality that we can give ourselves a chance at Homestead, and if not then we should have let the next one in.”

Elliot, who is driving the No. 24 car and replacing legend Jeff Gordon is also the son of racing legend Bill Elliott and was expected to be a successful driver in the series.

Buescher, one of four drivers for Front Row Motorsports – one of the smaller teams in the series – and is the first driver in team history to advance to the Chase. “[It is] Just really cool to be a part of it at this point. We look

at this first round, and we want to make it past that round. We want to move through the Chase, and then we can reevaluate from there,” Buescher said. “If we can keep going farther and improve our program each and every weekend, that’s always going to be what we’re aiming to do.

That’s the plan. We’ve got to do and try and progress through the Chase and see what we can pull off.”

Porters looking to finish games

Lockport soccer coach Chris Beal has not had a problem with the way the Porters have competed to open the 2016 season, just not the way they have finished.

Beal said Lockport has had chances, but just have not scored many goals to date.

“We had a good win against Joliet West, 3-0, an old conference rival and we played Oak Park and we outplayed them,” Beal said.

“We had about 15 or 16 shots on goal, they had a couple shots on goal, but they score and they win.

That has been one of our problems offensively. When we don’t score, the confidence drains and it becomes a mental battle. It is kind of frustrating, but we just have to keep battling.

“When you don’t put the ball in the goal, it really drains the confidence of the players, so we have to start getting the ball in the goal.”

Beal said there have been a quartet of players that have been leading the way for the Porters thus far this season.

“Nick Kowalczyk, Jose Mendoza and the back line of Thomas Inczauskis and Ainis Lapinskas.

They are doing a great job,” he

said.

Despite not being able to finish their chances, the Porters still have high goals for this season.

“We want to win to win conference,” Beal said of the newly realigned SouthWest Suburban Conference. “Last year was the first time we lost a conference game in three years. We got to a sectional title game two years ago and we want to go as far as we can in the playoffs and win a sectional title.”

To achieve these goals, Lockport has to finish its chances.

“If we can get the system right and work on it and get the confidence up, maybe by playoff time we will be where we need to be,” Beal said.

While the start has been very encouraging, there are still things the Porters are looking to fix going forward if they want to achieve their goals.

“Our serve receive will be a big key,” Kovanda said. “We go over it like an hour every practice.

That is going to be a big key to our game.”

“We have to work on our coverage,” Mraz said. “We are having some balls drop where we are too slow to the ball and those are the cheap points we can’t

We have young guys, but there is a time in a season where you can’t blame it on young guys anymore. Yeah, they are sophomores, but at this point in the season, we should be rolling and I think we are getting to that point. We have a good stretch of teams that we will be able to good things with.”

The Tigers will look to get the running game back on track, while keeping the stout defense and passing attack.

Against Oswego, sophomore quarterback Jaxson Aubry completed 14-of-36 passes for 147 yards and a pair of interceptions.

Dorris caught four passes for 57 yards. “(Jaxson) is doing a great job and we knew coming in that he would still make mistakes, but we were willing to live with it and move forward with it because those guys are our future,” Jason Aubry said of his son. “He is putting the ball in the right spot. He and Johnny (Holman) have a really good connection and I wish they could have hooked up a few more times. He has a great relationship with all the receivers.

They love each other and they play for each other. He is doing what we asked. He is maturing quickly and he understands what is going on. The maturity that I see from him is that he can come over to the sideline and he can tell (offensive coordinator) coach (Mark) Peterson what is going on and what he sees.”

(I’ve) got a lot to do this year yet, but definitely excited for next year.”

Truex is also excited to have a teammate joining the ranks.

“Everybody is really excited about this. We’ve heard Barney and Joe (Garone, president of Furniture Row Racing) talk for the last few years really about expanding someday and wanting to get bigger and wanting to grow,” he said. “(I am) just really excited to be a part of that.

“I know a lot of things had to come together. Toyota and the JGR alliance, all those things have been wonderful for us. Now I feel like those things all coming together, allowing us to do a second car, kind of helps keep those relationships strong, helps us build those for the future, and really I think bodes well for the future of Furniture Row Racing. Hopefully it’s something I’ll be able to be a part of for a long, long time. (I am) excited to work with Erik. Obviously a great talent, has all the right people behind him to be successful in this sport. Look forward to hopefully teaching him a thing or two along the way.”

Jones knows there will be a lot to learn as he moves up the NASCAR ranks on a permanent basis after running some Cup races in 2015 filling in for Kyle Busch (leg injury) and Matt Kenseth (suspension).

“Well, I don’t know if at any point in your career if you’re totally ready to make that move,” Jones said. “Like I said, I felt like last year I learned a lot in the few starts I made. At the end of the day I’m as ready as I can

“There’s going to be a lot to learn for sure. There’s going to be ups and downs throughout the year. I think at the end of it all we’re going to be in a good position, and I think we’ll be able to have speed at it and hopefully be competitive throughout the year.”

Rice to kick off Chase Country music singer and songwriter Chase Rice will perform the pre-race concert for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, the first race in the Chase for The NASCAR Sprint Cup on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Florida-born and North Carolinaraised, Rice played football on scholarship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and worked on a NASCAR pit crew before moving to Nashville to pursue his career in music. Rice has a special passion for NASCAR, developed first through years of attending races while following his father’s racing career and through his own career experience within

the sport.

“Racing is in my blood. My dad actually used to race when we lived in Florida and won his class at 24 Hours of Daytona, and my first job out of college was with Hendrick Motorsports, so being at the track is like home to me,” said Rice.

“NASCAR has the most passionate fans in the world, so it’s really cool to be able to come back as a performer now and combine two of the things I love the most – music and NASCAR. We’re going to have a good time kicking off the Chase!”

Rice recently released “Everybody We Know Does,” the first single from his highly anticipated, asyet-untitled new album. “Sometimes it forces us to be overstaffed,” he said. “That’s kind of day-to-day, not operational.”

Eggen said some the concern posed by residents recently comes as a result of the city’s lack of action taken to increase water rates annually.

“At the time, we should have been doing minor increases annually,” he said.

Eggen explained that every time his department proposed changes, they were shot down.

“By not replacing the failing infrastructure, that would increase our operational costs,” he said.

“We’ve been advocating that we complete a rehabilitation plan.”

The proposed rate increase, if approved, would be established at 12.5 percent and subsequently go into effect in November.

Information on a water and sewer rehabilitation plan was last presented before the city officials Aug. 15. That plan includes projects pertaining to the east side water treatment plant, additional nutrient removal for treatment processes and the expansion of the capital program to rebuild and maintain water mains and sewers.

On Sept. 19, city staff will deliver a presentation on the rates study.

Officials will need to consider a proposed rate change in October.

The drop of the green flag Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet signifies the beginning of the 2016 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. It also signifies the beginning of the end for one of the sport’s most polarizing drivers.

Tony Stewart announced at the beginning of the season that this would be his final season behind the wheel of the No. 14 Chevy.

A former winner at Chicagoland, the man they call ‘Smoke’ clinched his place in the Chase with a win at Sonoma in June.

“Before the season started we said our only goal was to go out and have fun, anything else would be icing on the cake,” Stewart said. “It’s been fun but we’ve also been able to run really well. We aren’t going to change.

We are going to keep having fun all the way to Homestead.”

Fun may have been Stewart’s goal from the beginning of the season, but with a championship only 10 races away, Stewart is looking to get more fun out of winning.

“My goal was to have fun this season, (this is) my last year, I really wanted to have a good time and I’m doing that,” he said.

“I’m having a lot of fun racing with the guys I’m racing with.

We wanted to win a race and we got that done so it’s kind of taken the pressure off of trying to accomplish that goal. Now, it’s like, ‘OK well let’s set another goal and set it a little higher’. We want to go and do the best we can to win this championship. You know the thing is its 10 weeks, it’s 10 hard weeks of racing and its three three-race segments to get to Homestead. You can’t leave anything on the table. You’ve got to use it up every week and its two and a half month of your life that you’ve got to really focus hard on and be all in on.”

With the points readjusted

as the driver’s enter the Chase, Stewart is looking for a competitive run at his fourth championship.

Stewart earned his first crown in 2002, grabbed a second in 2005 and waited six years before he defeated Carl Edwards by virtue of a tiebreaker. The two ended the season tied in points, but Stewart’s five wins bettered Edwards’ one.

With this being his last chance to get championship No. 4, Stewart said he will not go after it lightly. “(My mindset is) don’t leave anything on the table each week,” he said. “Once the Chase starts, every race that we run, it’s

not about saving anything. And I’m not worried about hurting people’s feelings, if we’ve got to roughen them up a little bit to get the job done, they don’t have to worry about me next year – I won’t be in that capacity.”

Stewart is not only looking for a title run for himself, he is looking for successful runs from Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick – both members of Stewart-Haas Racing, the team Stewart coowns.

“You want to be peaking at that time, you want to be really coming into it and you know, it’s never that you go to the track and you’re like ‘well we don’t want to peak this weekend so we’re not going to try to win the race.’ That’s not the scenario you put yourself in but you want to have momentum, you want your team guys to feel like they’re building on something and feel like they’re getting to the top of the pile. And I feel like we’re in a position like that – Kevin and Kurt are both running well each

week, the Mobil 1 car for us has been getting better and better each week as well. We’re knocking our top fives left and right here and if we can have that kind of consistency, that could carry us a long way in the Chase.”

When the Chase is over, it will end a NASCAR career for Stewart that began in 1999 after spending time in the IndyCar Series, where he was the series champion in 1997.

Stewart is the only driver to win championships in stock cars, Indy cars and open-wheel Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown cars.

His three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships make him one of just 15 drivers who have scored multiple Sprint Cup titles, and only the ninth driver to win three or more championships, joining Richard Petty (seven), Dale Earnhardt (seven), Jimmie Johnson (six), Jeff Gordon (four), David Pearson (three), Darrell Waltrip (three), Cale Yarborough (three) and Lee Petty (three).
