Crowds, not prisoners, walk the yard Prison BreakIn fundraiser a success as locals invade prison

The 25-foot tall limestone walls were built with inmate labor, and razor wire still rings the top of the facility. The Joliet Prison, built originally in 1858 as the Illinois State Penitentiary, shuttered in 2002 when the last of its inmates and most staff were moved to nearby Stateville. After that, the prison fell into a state disrepair, becoming a hot spot for vandals and even suffering through two fires.

But on Aug. 25, the prison yard was full again. But instead of convicts clad in black and white stripes, visitors and tourists filled the lawn for a night of food, drinks, music and history.

The night was designed to introduce the public to one of the city’s most notable landmarks, while raising cash to support preservation efforts and future tours of the facility.

The effort to reinvigorate the Route 66 landmark is being under-

taken by the Joliet Area Historical Museum, with help from the city of Joliet and local and corporate sponsors.

Visitors listened to live music, and were also able to stroll through parts of the prison, walking through the old baseball field, visiting the segregation and death row block, and walking through a portion of the east cell block.

Kara and Diane Haller decided to attend the event to get a look inside the prison that had been a backdrop to their everyday lives for years.

“Growing up in Joliet, it’s so much a part of our identity and a city, but most people just drive by,” Kara said.

“I grew up, just up the hill there,” added Diane. “I came past here ev-

ery day when I was a kid, so I just wanted to see the inside.”

Other visitors couldn’t help but think of the sad history of the prison, once referred to as a “living tomb” by one prisoner. The prison was infamous for harsh conditions that challenged and broke the spirits of its inmates.

“It’s just a part of history,” said Mary Hogrefe, adding that she couldn’t help but think of all the men who had been imprisoned inside the walls at one time. “I’m a longtime Joliet resident and I just wanted to support the Historical Society.”

The Joliet Area Historical Society is offering guided, 90-minute tours of the facility. The $20 tickets for tours are available online at www. jolietmuseum.org.

Bystander training available to any organization, individual County is working to expand its harm reduction efforts As the opioid epidemic continues to affect the entire nation, Will County is working to expand its harm reduction efforts by providing naloxone training to any organization or individual. Naloxone is a powerful antidote that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

“A dose of naloxone can save the life of someone who has overdosed on opiates,” said Dr. Kathleen Burke, director of the Office of Substance Use Initiatives, in the office of Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “In my training, I teach people to recog-

nize the signs and symptoms of an overdose and how to properly administer naloxone.”

Recently, Burke trained more than 30 taxi drivers and dispatchers at the Telecab Taxi service after being contacted by a representative of the company.

According to John Buchanan, general manager with Telecab, offering this training to their drivers was a ‘practical idea’.

“I have read about the opioid epidemic and realize it touches every community,” Buchanan said. “We have operated in Joliet for 20 years and we are dedicated to this community.

Our drivers are responsible for our customers’ safety while they are in our vehicles. The drivers are trained in CPR so it makes sense for them to be trained on

this life saving method as well.

“In addition, we have learned that some of our employees have personal experiences in losing loved ones to drug overdose. If we have a chance to save a life, we are going to do it.”

In 2015, Burke began naloxone training for law enforcement personnel in all 26 police departments and the Sheriff’s office in Will County. Additionally, Burke trained more than 200 library personnel in three of the county’s largest library districts - Fountaindale, Three Rivers, and Joliet. To date, Burke has trained more than 800 people and distributed 1,000 boxes of naloxone.

“I am very proud of Kathleen and the work she has done to expand this training in Will

County,” said Walsh. “This opioid crisis is affecting all parts of the state and the entire country.

Kathleen has been working very hard to educate the public and help save lives.”

The United States Surgeon General is encouraging more Americans to carry naloxone.

An estimated 2.1 million people in the U.S. struggle with opioid use disorder. In 2016, more than 42,000 people died from opioid overdose nationwide, which is more than fatalities from car accidents.

Burke said she received her training from the Chicago Recovery Alliance, founded by Dan Biggs who died unexpectedly on Tuesday. Burke said Biggs was a “real pioneer” in expanding the availability of naloxone and ad-

diction education.

“Our goal is to provide naloxone training to any group or organization in Will County,” she said.

The hour long training session includes information about addiction, overdose risk factors and hands-on naloxone instruction. Upon completing the training, each participant will also receive two free doses of naloxone.

Burke will be providing a training session at the New Lenox International Overdose Awareness Day event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 30 at the New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway in New Lenox. The public is invited to participate in this training.

PROTECTING Advocacy group asks village to consider animal protection laws

Local animal welfare advocates are looking to team up with the village of Shorewood to enact local legislation to protect pets.

Earlier this month, Peggy Grandahl, representing Safe Pets for Joliet, approached trustees asking if they would consider enacting an ordinance to allow police more authority in cases of animal rights and potential abuse.

Grandahl said her group decided to get involved in Shorewood following the loss of a dog left in a hot car in the village earlier this month.

“We’re concerned. It hit on so many levels. It was maddening and frustrating and sad, and it was needless,” Grandahl said.

Grandahl said there is already some strong legislation on the books, however, people don’t always realize how quickly things can go south when they leave their animals unattended or in a hot car or in cold conditions.

“You guys have just dealt with a tragic situation. Here, here’s what you can do… you want to make sure you have something on the books,” Grandahl said. “It’s really important to educate pet owners and law enforcement on what they can do to enforce the law.”

Safe Pets for Joliet offered the board a sample copy of a proposed ordinance, aimed to provide police with the laws they need to prevent tragedies before they happen.

consideration in Joliet, and includes the following provisions: Enabling law enforcement to intervene and ticket pet owners who leave their pet in a car when the temperature is above 75 degrees or below 35 degrees for more than five minutes, or regardless of whether the pet is showing signs of distress.

This legislation is already in place in Joliet.

Prohibiting the transport of animals in the back of pickup trucks unless they are crated and secured to the vehicle. This legislation was adopted in Joliet last year at the request of Safe Pets for Joliet.

Outlawing the use of animals as auction or raffle prizes. This was enacted in Joliet last year.

Strengthening the state’s outdoor tethering laws by requiring that animals be brought indoors when temperatures are at or above 90 degrees or at or below 20 degrees, in addition to other shelter, collar, and tether requirements. This legislation is pending in Joliet.

Grandahl said that while there is already statewide legislation regarding animal welfare than can be legally enforced by any law enforcement agency in the state, having a local ordinance on the books for officers to act upon is critical.

According to Grandahl, state laws on acceptable times and temperatures to leave animals outdoors are vague and open to interpretation.

The proposed ordinances provide what she called “acceptable

outdoor tethering and sheltering” which would allow officers to act when dogs are left outdoors in unsafe conditions.

Grandahl also noted that local laws are also an opportunity to educate the public on pet safety, and the dangers of leaving an animal in a locked car.

Illinois law directs animal owners to provide sufficient food and water, proper veterinary care.

The law also sets out regulations for proper tethering of dogs, including that the conditions do not exacerbate the animal, that the animal cannot become strangled by the tether, and that the tether is at least ten feet in length.

The act prohibits cruel behavior toward animals, including beating the animal, abandonment, placing the animal in a life-threatening situation due to extreme heat or cold.

Shorewood Trustees Dan Anderson and Dan Warren said they plan to work with Grandahl and Safe Pets for Joliet on proposed ordinances.

“It’s not every day you have an opportunity to have something positive come out of a tragedy,” Grandahl told the board “This is an opportunity to show that you are truly progressive community dedicated to also protecting those without a voice.”

Grandahl is also the founder of Paws Crossed Rescue Resource, a local dog rescue. Information on Safe Pets for Joliet can be found online, at safepetsforjoliet.org.

Black Hawk, proud leader of Sac and Fox tribe of Rock River Valley CHUCK SWEENY ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR First, let’s get his name straight. It was Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak. In English, he was Black Hawk, war chief of the Sac and Fox tribe, who lived most of his life in the Rock River Valley in northern Illinois.

Black Hawk was born in 1767 in Saukenuk, a Sac and Fox village along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois. He built his reputation as a war fighter leading his tribe in skirmishes against the Osage tribe.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a new enemy appeared — Americans, relentlessly moving west from the eastern states, claiming the land for themselves as they went, building homes and villages and fencing off the fields.

The U.S. Army and state militias accompanied the settlers and protected them against the people who had been there for thousands of years. Treaty after treaty was made between the native people and the U.S. government, and they were regularly broken.

One of those documents was the Treaty of 1804, signed in St. Louis by representatives of the Sac and Fox tribe and U.S. officials. Black Hawk, who had not been at the signing, thought the treaty merely ceded some of the tribe’s ancestral hunting grounds to the American settlers.

But the Sac and Fox had been snookered. Actually, the treaty required the Sac and Fox to vanish forever from 50 million acres, their entire homeland east of the Mississippi River.

Black Hawk was so angered that he allied with the great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh to fight alongside the British in the War of 1812, which the Americans started in an attempt to take over Canada. The war ended in a draw in 1815. Black Hawk became increasingly agitated as white settlers streamed into his northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin homeland, protected as always by militia and U.S. troops. However, he wasn’t popular among all of his tribe’s men and women.

Most Sac and Fox had resettled in Iowa by 1830 under the leadership of the moderate Chief Keokuk, who was more of a politician than a warrior. He favored

negotiating with the U.S. rather than fighting what he knew was a superior force.

In early 1832, Black Hawk decided to return to Illinois to resettle in the Sac and Fox homeland once again. Because about 160,000 whites now lived there, skirmishes broke out, prompting calls by the fearful Americans to rid the area of “Indians.”

In April 1832, Black Hawk “led some 1,000 Sac and Fox and Kickapoo men, women and children, including about 500 warriors, across the Mississippi River to reclaim land in Illinois that tribal spokesmen had surrendered to the U.S. in 1804,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

They weren’t seeking war. In fact, Black Hawk, now 65, hoped to enjoy a peaceful retirement in Illinois. After the cold, hard winter of 1831-1832, they wanted to come back to their old grounds and plant corn where they knew it would yield a bountiful harvest.

Only about one-fifth of the Sac and Fox returned; most stayed in Iowa.

Illinois Gov. John Reynolds requested U.S. troops and called up the state militia, eventually assembled a force of 7,000 soldiers, both regulars and militia members, to fight the Sac and Fox. Meanwhile, throughout the spring and summer of 1832, Americans burned or otherwise destroyed Sac and Fox fields.

One of the sorriest battles in the war took place near what today is Stillman Valley, Illinois. Maj. Isaac Stillman and 275 men were pursuing Black Hawk’s warriors. Black Hawk could not persuade other tribes to join him, so he sent emissaries to Stillman to surrender. But the militiamen were drunk; they fired on the delegation and killed two warriors. Black Hawk planned an ambush in return. In the Battle of Stillman’s Run, 40 Sac and Fox warriors routed Stillman and his 275 men.

claimed about 70 U.S. troops and militiamen as well as settlers. An estimated 500 Sac and Fox were killed.

Among the Americans who took part in the battles were Abraham Lincoln, the future president of the U.S., and Jefferson Davis, the future president of the confederation of rebellious states that seceded from the U.S. in 1861.

As the war proceeded into the summer of 1832, the Americans pursued Black Hawk and his warriors into southern Wisconsin, defeating them finally in August at Bad Axe on the Mississippi River.

On Sept. 2, 1832, the Black Hawk War ended when U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott and Sac and Fox leaders signed a treaty forcing the tribe to cede 6 million acres of land west of the Mississippi River and 50 miles west of the river.

Black Hawk lived out the rest of his life in Iowa, dying near Des Moines in 1838.

He was 72.

In his autobiography, Black Hawk addressed his conquerors, saying: “May the Great Spirit shed light on your path, so that you may never experience the humility that the power of the American government has reduced me to. This is the wish of a man who, in his native forests, was once as proud and bold as yourself.”

The chief is honored in a 40-foot statue by Lorado Taft, above the bluffs of the Rock River at Oregon, Illinois. Although he didn’t specifically call the statue “Black Hawk,” that’s what it’s commonly called.

Glasgow to host Child Sex Trafficking Summit Summit 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 7 at the Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St., in downtown Joliet JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow will host a Child Sex Trafficking Summit in September during which Will County community leaders will discuss steps already being taken to protect our children and outline future strategies to end this horrific exploitation.

The summit, which the State’s Attorney is hosting in conjunction with the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and the National Criminal Justice Training Center, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 7 at the Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St., in downtown Joliet.

The summit is designed for law enforcement officials, educators, business and industry leaders, prosecutors, child welfare advocates/DCFS, probation professionals, victim services advocates, and elected officials.

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995 to improve investigations into child sexual abuse. Children who have been sexually abused come to the Center

to provide recorded statements to specially trained and compassionate forensic interviewers. The Center also provides counseling as well as referrals to other medical and social services so the healing process for these vulnerable victims can begin.

“The Children’s Advocacy Center has been working for more than two decades to provide hope, healing, and justice for abused children,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “Through this summit, we are expanding our efforts to end the systematic sexual exploitation of our children and remove dangerous child predators from our community.”

As part of this initiative, State’s Attorney Glasgow and the Children’s Advocacy Center have formed a Will County Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Coalition.

The State’s Attorney also has designated a specialized Child Sexual Exploitation Advocate to provide case management support and advocacy to youths who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation.

The State’s Attorney also implemented a high technology Crimes Against Children Unit in 2012 to track and prosecute predators who trade child pornography online.

Research has documented disturbing links between those who exploit children by collecting and trading sexually abusive images and those who are hands-on abusers.

The unit has uncovered a number of cases involving defendants who were actually producing child pornography and who were hands-on abusers. The team’s critical work has enabled the Children’s Advo-

Lipinski Announces Grant for Lockport Township Fire Protection District District has been awarded an over $329 thousand grant through the Department of Homeland Security Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has announced that the Lockport Township Fire Protection District has been awarded an over $329 thousand grant through the Department of Homeland Security for new protective breathing apparatuses.

“Federal funding is needed to meet the increased demands being placed on our nation’s first

responders,” said Rep. Lipinski.

“This grant will allow the Lockport Township Fire Protection District to purchase much needed new equipment. In doing so, they will be able to continue to build upon their already impressive record of service.”

“Our current breathing apparatus units are 15 plus years old and at the end of their service life,” stated Lockport Township Fire Protection District Chief Paul Hertzmann. “There have been dramatic improvements to this product over the last few years and these new units will provide our firefighters with the latest innovations to keep them safe during emergency events.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program provides needed federal funds to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations in order to improve the response capabilities of our nation’s first responders and the safety of our communities.

‘Drive Sober’ Labor Day campaign in full swing The Will County Sheriff’s Office is announcing that it has begun its traffic safety campaign focusing on drunk, unbuckled and distracted drivers.

The high-visibility crackdown began August 20th and will run through the Labor Day weekend until September 4th.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Illinois State Police and other local law enforcement agencies to increase this effort. Will County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Lakomiak stated, “This isn’t about writing tickets or making arrests. This is about saving lives

and helping people realize impaired driving can be fatal. It’s a matter of life or death.”

This Labor Day weekend, remember to designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family drive drunk. Buckle up and put your cell phone away while driving! Help keep our roads safe!

It’s officially that time of year again for Friday night lights and Joliet West and Plainfield North did not disappoint.

After what had the makings of a potential blowout with North (1-0,1-0) leading West (0-1,0-1) 16-2 at halftime, West climbed backed in the second half, but fell just short falling 19-17.

“I’m proud of these guys,” West head coach Bill Lech said.

“We talk about finishing and for the most part our kids played with their shoulders back and we will just have to come back and fix this for the [next game].”

North tacked on the first three points of the 2018 season with a 42-yard field goal by junior kicker Eben Heine to start off with the quick lead.

With another drive starting in West territory, North extended its lead with a 15-yard run by junior running back Jaylon Tillman

that put North on top 10-0.

West would then tack on two points with a safety from junior linebacker Matthew Cronk to narrow the lead back down to eight points.

North headed into halftime with a comfortable lead at 162, but knew that West wouldn’t back down in the second half.

“Their kids really played hard and kept battling,” North head coach Tim Kane said.

In the second half, West received the ball first and didn’t waste any time when it marched down the field and scored off of an 18-yard run by senior running back Jaylen Taylor who had 19 carries for 92 yards on the night.

At the end of the third quarter, North led 16-9.

Big third quarter dooms Lockport in loss DEKALB — Lockport quarterback Marcos Voulgaris passed for 160 yards and ran for a touchdown, but that was not enough as the Porters fell 38-7 in the final game of the Kickoff Classic Saturday on Brigham Field in Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University.

Lockport went into halftime trailing only 10-7, but the Celtics scored on four consecutive possessions to put the game away.

“That first series in the third quarter was big,” said Lockport coach Dan Starkey. “We have a lot of first year starters, but no excuses. We have to go out and play harder. Credit Providence, they really took it to us in the third quarter.”

Starkey knows the score could have been different early if not for some dropped passes and mental mistakes.

“The plays were there,” he said. “We left a lot of plays on the field, especially in the first half and those are plays we made in practice. I really like our kids, hopefully they grow from this and stick together and make a big jump from week one to week two.”

• Joliet Central 26, Romeoville 6 The Steelmen made school history last Friday night after winning their first opening game since 1988. Central led the Spartans by a score of 19-0 at halftime, and then capped of the win with a 36-yard run by sophomore running back Elijah Smith, setting up a touchdown run by senior quarterback Jared King.

• Plainfield South 14, Minooka 7 The Cougars started the 2018 year off right after colliding in a defensive battle with the Indians last Friday night. All scoring took place in the first half, and the Cougars withstood a drive that put Minooka on the halfyard line with 1:47 left in regulation. After stopping the late resurgence drive by the Indians, the Cougars had five consecutive runs by senior quarterback Cody Dieball to run out the clock.

Saints earn draw Kelli Pietrowski (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) scored two goals as the University of St. Francis women’s soccer team played Harris-Stowe State University to a 3-3 tie.

The Saints (0-1-1) opened the scoring in the 38th minute.

Martina Kotrba (Minooka, Ill./ Minooka) collected the ball in the attacking third and found Pietrowski who threaded a pass to Hannah Rieker (Shorewood, Ill./ Minooka). — DON DEAR DON, That’s great news! You’ve finished Baby Step 2, and now you’re ready for Baby Step 3, which is fully-funding your emergency fund.

I don’t see a reason to set aside more than six months of expenses. My recommended range for an emergency fund is three to six months of expenses. If your employment situation is one where there’s more risk of something going wrong, you should lean to-

ward saving six months’ worth.

If your employment outlook is really stable, you can go with setting aside three or four months of expenses in an emergency fund.

I look at your situation as being more high-risk. You each have jobs, so that’s the good news. But if the company went down, or experienced layoffs, you could

find yourselves unemployed at the same time. My advice would be to save up six months of expenses for your emergency fund.

With that kind of cash just sitting there, you should be able to make an easier and less stressful transition in almost any kind of unemployment scenario or other emergency.

However, they can sue you if you don’t pay, and get a lien against something after they sue you. In some cases, this is done against your income by garnishing your wages.

Some examples of “secured” debt would be things like a home mortgage or car loan. A home mortgage loan is secured by the home. If you don’t pay, they can foreclose and take the house. The same is true with a car loan. If you don’t make the payments, they can take the car.

Typically, unsecured debts will be the last debts you pay if you’re in financial trouble. You’d make the car payment before paying on your student loan, and you’d make your house payment before paying on a credit card.

Health Dept: Syphilis is Back, Very Prevalent Increase in Cases for Locally and Statewide

A recent return to prominence of the venereal disease Syphilis seems to be a bit of a surprise to the medical community. But for Program Coordinator Lyyti Dudczyk at the Will County Health Department, it’s something that’s been on the verge for a while.

“This may be a surprise to a lot of private providers,” Dudczyk explained. “But for those of us who do surveillance on STDs, we have seen this coming for a while.”

For the entire state of Illinois, there has been a 50% increase in early stage Syphilis cases from 2013 to 2017. In addition, there has been a 39% increase for all stages of Syphilis in females during that same period.

Dudczyk pointed out that in Will County as recently as 2014, there were 12 reported primary and secondary cases of Syphilis. But those combined cases then rose to 32 in 2015 and 46 in 2016, before falling back to 21 in 2017.

“In Will County, we may have seen our peak in 2016,” said Dudczyk. “What we have been trying to do at the Health Department during this time is convince area doctors to test patients for Syphilis as well as HIV, Gonorrhea, or other prominent STDs. Sometimes a person may be positive for HIV, but not know he or she has Syphilis. And if you do not catch it in the early stages, it becomes even more dangerous.”

As examples, Dudczyk cited a couple of situations she’s noticed over the past few years that she rarely saw, if ever, back when she started doing surveillance at the Will County Health Department in 2007.

“We are now seeing cases of Congenital Syphilis(CS), where it is passed to a child in the mother’s womb. Fortunately, we have thus far successfully treated these recent patients so that no child in Will County has been born with Syphilis.”

The entire state of Illinois, however, has not been so lucky. In 2017, Illinois had 21 CS cases, which included two stillbirths.

“Another kind we are seeing more of,” Dudczyk continued, “is Ocular Syphilis, which attacks your eyesight. You could have someone go to the eye doctor with problems, maybe they already are HIV positive and know it, but they have no idea they have this kind of Syphilis as well.”

As an agency, Dudczyk says the

Health Department is focusing on catching Syphilis early, encouraging testing, and above all: educating their patients. “As it always has been, it’s a matter of communicating with your sexual partners, using protection, and getting tested,” Dudczyk summarized.

Treatment is easier, Dudczyk concluded, if you catch the Syphilis early. That’s when your treatment can be with Penicillin, which is a dose of two injections. But if you are not found to have it until later, then you might need a series of six shots over three weeks.

Drake surprises local girl with hospital visit 11-year-old fan gets both of her birthday wishes one week apart

Sophia Sanchez had two wishes during her birthday week.

One came true when she was surprised by Drake, the 31-year-old Canadian superstar, stopped in to surprise the 11-year-old at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

Just a week after meeting the entertainer, Sophia learned her other wish had come true — she is getting a new heart.

Sophia was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that often leads to heart failure and a need for heart transplantation in order to survive.

She received Drakes attention after she engaged in the “Kiki Challenge” which is a choreographed dance to Drakes song, “In My Feelings.”

Drake was in Chicago performing at the United Center on tour, when the little girl sparked his attention so much so that he stopped by for a visit.

“When I first saw him I screamed, “Oh my God” and I wasn’t sure if it was real or fake,” Sophia said.

Sophia, who was a normal healthy girl that played softball, basketball and cheered, until she her health declined six weeks prior to going into the hospital. “[Sophia’s] coloring was really gray, she had no energy, I had to carry her around from doctor to doctor and she was under care of a cardiologist,” said Natalie Sanchez, Sophia’s mom.

At first, doctors could not figure out what was wrong with Sophia, but Natalie knew they could not give up and needed to find a prognosis.

“We went to a bunch of different specialist, and I took her to emergency room begged for more tests and after we found out [what the problem was], they transferred us to Hope Hospital,” Natalie said.

With Sophia’s condition, she

“We feel blessed we made it here on time because I could of lost my daughter. [Sophia] had an open heart surgery about four weeks ago, and it was up and down for the first few weeks, but now she’s getting her energy back and feeling like herself again...”

had to be transferred to Lurie Hospital for proper care.

“Lurie had the VAD (ventricular assists device) and heart transplant we needed,” Natalie said.

Natalie said that she knows what the ramifications could have been if they couldn’t get Sophia to Lurie Hospital, and she is thankful for her progress up to this point.

“We feel blessed we made it here on time because I could of lost my daughter,” Natalie said. “[Sophia] had an open heart surgery about four weeks ago, and it was up and down for the first few weeks, but now she’s getting her energy back and feeling like herself again.”

Sophia is dependent on a machine that pumps her heart for her, and she is waited for a new heart. “[Sophia] has been on this list since July 11,” Natalie said.

For an 11-year-old that has been stuck inside of a hospital all summer seeing her friends enjoying the warm weather, Drakes visit inspired her to keep pushing forward.

“It’s been upsetting [being in the hospital] this summer when I had a lot of fun things planned with my friends,” Sophia said.

“When I saw Drake though, I

thought it was a miracle, and he told me to keep fighting and stay strong.”

Not only did Drake have great words of wisdom, but he also promised he would bring Sophia on stage at one of his concerts while singing a song for her, and he told her that they will remain in contact in the future.

Even though being at a hospital for a long time isn’t easy for anyone, Sophia and Natalie said they have enjoyed the care they have received so far from Lurie.

“Lurie has been an amazing hospital to us,” Natalie said.

“We feel we’re in the best place, everyone’s very nice and they make it the most fun as possible for Sophia that they can.”

Lurie showed care for Sophia by letting her have her birthday party with 20 people invited to increase her mood.
