Casseday Mansion in jeopardy of being demolished Historian Mary Beth Gannon among others, to sign petition and keep fighting to keep the mansion standing BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com

While it is said that all good things that must come to an end, one group is trying to prevent the end of one nostalgic building on Joliet’s East Side. One of the last mid-19th century two-story limestone homes, the George Washington Casseday Mansion is in jeopardy of being torn down.

Historian Mary Beth Gannon does not want to see the venerable peace of history be demolished. “That house has such a unique history to it and I really don’t want to see it go away,” Gannon said. When Casseday moved to Joliet, he got into some legal trouble and was sued by Abraham Lincoln. “There’s definitely some connection there.” Gannon said. “During the lawsuit Mr. Casseday, he came to Joliet and he was a very prominent business man that sold land out of his house, there’s even a Casseday subdivision.” The limestone house that was built in 1851 on the city’s east side, may be torn down so developers can build a new Thornton’s gas station at the corner of

Collins and Jackson Street. The 1851 limestone home, now a three-unit apartment is something that initially Gannon said didn’t make a lot of sense because of a current gas station that is already near the house. “When I heard about a year ago now that a gas station wanted the place I was naturally upset because there’s already a gas station across the street from the house,” Gannon said. “But then, our hopes got up because the representatives from the gas station said they would help move it.” On the east side, where Gannon acknowledges there needs to be more businesses, she though that it would be a win-win for the city with money coming in, and the redirecting of

Police arrest pair of men for firing shots at another vehicle At 10:18 p.m. police were called to the 2400 block of West Jefferson Street where the occupants of a black SUV had shot at another vehicle Two men were arrested Aug. 21 after allegedly firing shots at another vehicle in Joliet. At 10:18 p.m. police were called to the 2400 block of West Jefferson Street where the occupants of a black SUV had shot at another vehicle on the street. No injuries were reported. Officers put out a description of the SUV, which was spotted a short time later exiting Interstate 80 onto Chicago Street, according to police reports. “Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and it refused to pull over. One of the occupants threw a firearm out of the vehicle near Chicago Street and Patterson Road during the pursuit,” police said.

The vehicle did eventually stop near Patterson Road and Joliet Street where Mitchell M. Thompson, 25, and Shaquan M. Meadows, 26, were taken into custody. “A loaded firearm was recovered from the side of the road,” police said. Thompson, of the 1600 block of Fifth Avenue, was arrested on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, obstructing justice and fleeing from police. Meadows, of the 200 block of Herkimer Street, was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm and obstructing justice. According to the Illinois Depart-

ment of Corrections, Thompson has been on parole for nearly two years for an armed robbery conviction. In March 2013, Thompson and three other men crashed a party in the 100 block of South Park Road and spent some time socializing before taking out handguns and taking money, wallets and cell phones from the guests.

Get mad at the debt you have, then get rid of it Lower interest rate will help you save a little money in the short-term, but the drawback is it can also make you feel like you ve addressed your problem

DEAR DAVE: I’ve got about $3,000 in credit card debt. Would it be a good idea to transfer the balance from my credit card to another one that has a much lower interest rate?

TAMMI DEAR TAMMI: Lots of people who find themselves in your shoes make the switch to lowinterest rate credit cards. A lower interest rate will help you save a little money in the short-term, but the drawback is it can also make you feel like you’ve addressed your problem with debt when you really haven’t. and the mindset that put you in that situation in the first place. Besides, most low-interest, or nointerest, credit card offers are only good for a short period of time. There’s always a catch! I discovered long ago that personal finance is only about 20 percent head knowledge and 80 percent behavior. Emotion is a key element to getting out of debt and staying out of debt. You’ve got to get really mad at debt, the impact it has on your financial life, and attack it with a vengeance. Think about how many times debt has been a negative influence on your life. My guess is there were many occa-

sions in the past when you could have done great stuff—I’m talking about meaningful, important things—if you hadn’t had to send a bunch of money to those bozos at the credit card company every month. I want you to really think about it. How about this? First, cut up your credit card and close the account. Then, sell some stuff and take a parttime job nights or weekends for just a little while. You could wipe out all your debt in less than a year by doing that and starting to live on a strict, written, monthly budget. If you don’t get mad about it and take a stand against debt, and become determined you’re never going to fall into that trap again, you’re liable to find yourself back in the same situation or worse!
