JTHS Engine Team competes in Hot Rodders challenge Judges praise team for speed, potential

Members of Joliet Township High School’s Engine Team recently traveled to Route 66 Raceway to participate in the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge – a nationwide high school engine building competition.

Students Ulises Carreno, Martin Chavez, Jeff Law, Jimmy Miller and Tony Tokarczyk participated in the July 30 competition, earning

a time of 28:54 with no penalties.

The score attracted the attention of competition judges, according to the district.

Central teacher and engine building coach Milton George said he was proud of the team, noting that the JTHS team gained respect based on their performance.

“The judges made the comment that they had never seen a team put an engine back together faster than Joliet Central, and that if we worked on a quicker disassembly we would be awesome and tough to beat,” George said.

Although the JTHS team did

not qualify for the next round, the judges praise regarding speed and considerable potential speaks volumes.

“I really enjoyed being their coach and was quite proud of their hard work,” George added. “They gave it their all, and most importantly, had a great time at the event. I feel that we have a great core team to build on, and with more practice, will only get better.”

Next up for the JTHS Engine Team is participation in the SEMA show, a premier automotive specialty products trade event in Las Vegas, Nov. 1-4.

Joliet KidzFest inspires love of learning Annual event attracts thousands to downtown Joliet for food, fun, educational activities

For one day, downtown Joliet turned into a festival designed to capture the attention of children age 2-11.

Just ask 10-year-old Alexis Martinez, of Plainfield. She was one of thousands attendees who took part in the activities at this year’s Joliet KidzFest.

“I like that I get to learn new things,” she said.

Besides family-friendly entertainment, food and crafts, Joliet KidzFest offered 10 new exhibitors in 2016.

Richard Fredrickson, interim event and marketing manager for City Center Partnership, said there’s great meaning in holding the event in downtown Joliet.

“It showcases Lewis University

and showcases downtown Joliet,” he said. “It gives them the opportunity to reach out to the public.”

This year’s festival featured 60 different vendors, which is an alltime high for KidzFest.

From pony rides and face painting to martial arts and chemistry experiments, KidzFest was full of attractions. Among those holding booths as part of the festivities were the Joliet Park District, Joliet Police Department, Joliet Fire Department and Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Martinez said she was enjoying all KidzFest had to offer.

“I saw some fossils that were, like, gigantic,” she said. “That was very interesting. I also learned that Illinois was under water at one point.”

Martinez’s mom, Saida, noted that the event is designed to engage children, and said she’s pleased by

all the activities made available.

“It’s very family-friendly,” she said. “There’s projects to do. There’s painting. There’s games.”

Saida added that KidzFest provides a meaningful experience for her family.

“They’re learning new things,” she said. “They’re actually making them work out; they’re staying active.”

Greg Kientop is an adjunct professor of environmental studies at Lewis University. He said giving children a chance to see the various fossils, rocks and crystals that make up the world is nice.

“Some things that they generally see in a museum, they can’t touch,” Kientop said. “Here, they get to touch a little bit more.”

A mastodon’s tusk, jaw and teeth fragments were exhibited. Kientop said people were responding well to the display, adding that an

interactive quiz on environmental topics was offered to help generate interest.

“They always get them right,” Kientop said. “Sometimes a parent has to help them out, but that’s a good thing, too.”

Steve Rex said he and his daughter were enjoying their time spent at KidzFest.

“It seems to get bigger and better every time,” the Channahon father said. “The kids love coming down here.”

Rex and his daughter enjoyed the festival and various displays. He said they walked the entire strip, stopping for a lesson in martial arts and watching a cyborg in action.

“We’re just knocking them off one at a time,” Rex said.

“It has to pass through obstacles; kind of like army tanks,” Cordoba said.

This year was Cordoba’s first time working as a member of the Joliet Cyborgs’ design team. It took six weeks to put together the cyborg, but Cordoba said the team was satisfied with the final product.

“There’s a lot of kids that seem happy,” he said. “That’s what we want. We just want them to smile.”

The annual event typically attracts between 4,000 and 6,000 people, according to Fredrickson.

“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” he said.

Council responds to graffiti incident at Joliet park

The city of Joliet was notified Tuesday of a graffiti incident at a city park, which prompted several elected officials to respond to the matter.

At approximately 3:28 p.m. Aug. 2, the Joliet Police Department received a call from a resident reporting graffiti in a park on Joliet’s west side. Deputy Chief Ed

Gregory said officers responded to the park, near Indian Head and Old Renwick Trail, and found graffiti depicting vulgar language, racial slurs, a swastika and other permanent markings.

During the Joliet City Council’s meeting later that evening, Mayor Bob O’DeKirk told the council that some “nasty graffiti” was spray painted at the park.

“That type of behavior is not welcome and is not going to be tolerated in our city,” O’DeKirk said. “This country’s going through

some difficult times; it really has avoided Joliet so far. I just call upon the reasonable people in our community to keep their heads, keep the cool and keep this stuff where it belongs—and that’s not inside Joliet.”

Councilwoman Bettye Gavin mirrored that sentiment, saying what’s transpired could place the city and its people in a very “volatile situation.” She said the Joliet community is stronger when people work together.

“We’re a city of love, and we’re

a city of champions,” she said.

“We do better when we all work together. Let us work together to keep the peace and keep the safety of our residents.”

Councilman Larry Hug, who represents District 1 where the incident occurred, noted that he’s already received a number of calls from residents regarding the graffiti, and said the city will not let divisive actions split the people.

“As a city, we’re not going to stand for it anywhere in this city,” Hug said. “We’ll always stand

together.”

Gregory said the city is looking to clean up the graffiti as soon as possible.

Police are still in the process of investigating the matter, but the deputy chief said there are currently no witnesses or suspects.

Until now, the city has not had any similar incidents, according to Gregory. In response to a question about increasing patrols, he cautioned that this was an isolated incident and the department has no plans to add officers.

Joliet rejects option to reconsider DriveTime proposal Council votes 5-3 to uphold decision

After more than two years of vacancy and receiving two proposals to fill the lot at 1395 N. Larkin Ave., the Joliet City Council voted 5-3 to uphold a previous decision to deny a special use permit to DriveTime.

None of the neighborhood groups in opposition to the proposed special use were in attended the council’s Aug. 2 meeting. After initially denying the special use permit in June, officials were asked to reconsider their decision after the city learned a

blood and plasma donation center had interest in the property.

City Manager Jim Hock said later that the board was briefed about his previous experience at a municipality in Michigan, where a blood donation center was in operation. He said issues that arose from that center “provided a constant aggravation to the police department.”

Hock stated that problems occurred daily, in part, because individuals would use the bus stop outside the donation center to get to a nearby liquor store or gamble the money they received for donations. While the DriveTime proposal was denied a special-use permit that would have allowed

the used-car business to make modifications to the property, the blood and plasma center wouldn’t face the same requirements.

Roofing contract for public utilities service center approved

The Joliet City Council approved a $173,000 contract to Malcor Roofing for replacement of roofing materials at the Department of Public Utilities Service Center.

Officials said the flat roof material is aging. The building was originally built in 1980.

The measure allows the city to award a contract for installation of a new coating system. Officials said council action will add 20 years to the remaining life of the roofing materials.

The city reviewed six bids for the project, which will use water and sewer improvement funds.

Joliet is looking to add six portable radios and 300 replacement batteries throughout the Joliet Police Department.

The city said the batteries were last replaced in early 2015 and are nearing the end of their 18-month shelf life.

The city will pay Motorola Solutions $49,757.58.

An agreement between Starcom Radio Equipment, Motorola and the state of Illinois will allow Joliet to receive a discounted price for the equipment.

During the meeting, Joliet also approved change order request No. 5 and payment estimate No. 4 for Doris Avenue roadway improvements.

The project is part of last year’s roadway reconstruction program.

In September 2015, a $268,000 service contract was awarded to Austin-Tyler Construction. City records show that the savings is due to replacing a 4-inch frame and gate, and reducing the anticipated amount of landscape restoration.

The money will go back into the Motor Fuel Tax fund.

Hundreds of volunteers launch Fairmont Redevelopment Program Project aimed at ‘improving the quality of life for these residents’ Despite the high temperatures, 200 volunteers were hard at work last month painting, hammering and sawing as part of the kick-off to the Fairmont Redevelopment Program.

Volunteers representing the Reach Mission ministry came from the local area and around the country to work on several projects in the Fairmont neighborhood in unincorporated Lockport Township.

“This is all about improving the quality of life for these residents,” Will County Executive Larry Walsh said in a press release announcing the launch of the project. “These days, as government must continue to do more with less resources, partnerships like this are invaluable to serve our constituents.”

Ron Pullman, director of the community development division in Will County’s Land Use Department, the project symbolizes the start of a three- to five-year redevelopment program in Fairmont. The program is an effort to implement elements of an overall Fairmont plan developed by neighborhood residents, business owners and Will County staff.

“This particular project began last year when Messiah Lutheran Church reached out to the county seeking an area in need,” Pullman said.

“We began accepting applications from low income homeowners who needed assistance with upgrades to their residences. We received applications from 65 homeowners in the Fairmont area, and our intent is to assist all who qualify for the program.”

The community development division had limited funding for the program but was able to partner with the Will County Center for Community Concerns, Habitat for Humanity, Share Fest New Lenox and Reach Mission – a nationwide organization that seeks local agencies to partner with and offer week-long mission trips for teens to provide service in low income communities. The land use department has been able to leverage $1 million in seed capital to sustain the program over the next three to five years.

“We have received donations of lumber and other supplies from local businesses, and a large number of local contractors have donated their time to help renovate these homes,” said Pullman.

Larry Holman, a U.S. Army veteran, has lived in his Fairmont home for the last 14 years. He said he appreciates the help from Reach Mission volunteers and the land use department.

“I’m a widower, and I live alone on a fixed income,” Holman said.

“I needed repairs to my stairs and the upstairs bathroom. These volunteers have been so helpful to me. These repairs will let me keep living in my house.”

Pullman said this project is part of a larger redevelopment plan for the Fairmont community, a neighborhood in unincorporated Will County that officials say lacks basic services such as storm sewer improvements and economic development opportunities.

Virgil Kemp’s group, Helpers of Mother Earth, began in the early spring with several weeks of clean up.

“There are also many abandoned homes, which can also lead to other potentialdangers,”Kempsaid.“With

the support of County Executive Walsh and the county board, we have plans for flood remediation and other green infrastructure and economic development that will help improve this neighborhood.”

Dalinda Herrod, president of Fairmont Community Partnership Inc., has lived in her home for more than 43 years. She said the partnership was established to help residents take pride in their community and their homes.

“We appreciate the support of Will County helping us improve our neighborhood,” she said. “We are very thankful for these great volunteers who have been here this week to help us with much needed repairs.”

Pullman said the county will continue to assist as many residents as possible with the funding available.

County officials said the land use department would finish any projects remaining after the volunteers departed.

“The residents in the Fairmont neighborhood have made due for so long it is definitely time for us to assist them all we can,” he said.

“I am so proud that our not for profit partners have stepped up to accomplish the work we have started, but there is still much to be done for this area.”

Partnership provides dementia training for first responders Senior Star provides training for staff of Joliet’s Daley’s Ambulance Service

Recognizing the signs of someone with dementia can lead to a critical diagnosis in patient care, and the

earlier it is noticed the better.

In a unique educational partnership, associates specializing in Alzheimer’s and dementia care from Senior Star at Weber Place have provided dementia training to the entire staff of Joliet’s Daley’s

Organize a linen closet, medicine cabinet, or a drawer – a small space that will be fairly quick and easy and give you a sense of accomplishment.

That will give you the confidence and motivation to move on to bigger areas.

Measure your progress When you have a big goal, like getting an entire room organized, it can be motivating to measure small successes as you slowly progress towards your goal.

When paring down paper piles, for example, weigh your discard bag at the end of each session, with a goal that the bag from each session weighs more than the bag from the prior session. Or count how many bags of trash or donated items you have after each session, or measure how many inches of closet rod space or shelf space you’ve freed up.

Invest in home services program A true benefit to taxpayers will come not from cuts, but from an investment in the program The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is thrilled that Gov. Rauner has suspended his cruel overtime policy within the Illinois Home Services Program.

Secretary [James] Dimas claims the policy saved $5 million. If so, it was a disinvestment in our economy that came at the cost of people with disabilities

losing service, personal assistants not getting paid for their work, and personal assistants being forced to abandon their consumers because of the threat of termination.

A true benefit to taxpayers will come not from cuts, but from an investment in the program. The program allows 30,000 people to live in their own homes

instead of institutions, which costs at least $10,000 more per person every year.

I urge Gov. Rauner to partner with people, with the community to create a new overtime plan. Joliet schools joining Southwest Prairie Conference this year

As the start of another school season rolls around, so does another fall athletic season and for several local athletic teams and this year, that new season comes with changes.

This season when play opens, Joliet West and Joliet Central will join the Southwest Prairie Conference, leaving behind the SouthWest Suburban Conference, where most teams competed in the Blue Division.

“We have been planning the last year and attending meetings and getting ready to move into the SPC,” said Joliet West Athletic Director Steve Millsaps.

“It is bittersweet because we are leaving a bunch of schools and a group of ADs that are great people, but we are excited for the opportunity to join the SPC. “The proximity and the quick rides and the natural rivalries

with schools like Minooka and Plainfield South that are right in our backyard, so we are excited.”

Proximity and rivalries not only allow athletes to compete, it also allows fans to follow teams around easier.

“The kids that are not involved in athletics and want to cheer the teams on, you will have kids that are able to drive or parents drop them off, so the student sections at away games should be bigger,” Millsaps said.

What the fans following the team will see is competition across all sports.

“From football to tennis, we are playing the same type of athletes. Plainfield South has a Joliet water tower, so we are not playing against an Orland Park kid or an H-F kid,” Millsaps said.

“It is not only going to be more competitive, but you will have the kids knowing each other and there will be that really neat

That will bring out the best in them.”

One of those sports will be girls volleyball, where the SPC offers some of the top players in the state year in and year out.

“We have Plainfield Central, Plainfield North, Minooka, there is just talent all over the place,” said West girls volleyball coach Al Mart. “Anyone that thinks we are walking into something easier is not aware of the volleyball that is played in the SPC. There is quality coaching and are quality athletes. You have the No. 1 ranked setter in the nation and you have three D-I girls at Minooka. We have played a lot of them in nonconference, but now it will be a different challenge. We will miss the teams we played in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, but we know we will have a challenge.”

With the new conference configurations, the SPC will remain in one division. That being said, football teams will no longer play nonconference games, instead only playing the other nine conference teams.

And while the football teams will leave behind the physicality of teams like Bolingbrook, Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way East, coaches are not taking the move lightly.

“Growing up in the Joliet area my whole life, I know the kind of football and the kids of athletes and coaches we will see in the SPC, so we are looking forward to competing in another high class conference,” said Joliet Central football coach Brett Boyter. “The SWSC was one of the best conferences in the state, but in the Prairie, you can’t take anyone lightly. Where we are as a program, nothing is going to come easy and no team is going to take it easy on us. In fact, there are more teams that don’t want to be the first team to give up a win to us. So, we are going to still get everyone’s best and we are expecting that. There is no deep breath or no looking that it will be easier to compete - we know

we have to bring it.

“This is a new fresh start and it has our kids excited to play with a new focus. A fresh start is always a good thing.”

Not only are the Joliet schools excited about a fresh start in a new conference, the existing teams are looking forward to welcoming the Tigers and Steelmen in.

“I think the Joliets will be a great addition to the conference,” said Plainfield North AD Ron Lear.

“They offer some really quality programs and it is a great fit with location. Our league doesn’t have a lot of travel and they fit right in to that. We liked our conference and how it was and I think they will just make our league that much better.”

Lear said he is excited to see what West and Central will bring to the gridiron this season.

“I am excited for football and to be able to play the nine schools. I think the Joliet schools will fit very well,” he said. “Joliet West has shown over the last couple of years that they have a quality program and that will fit and do well. I think Joliet Central, especially with a third-year starting quarterback, is going to surprise some people. I think if some teams take them lightly, they will beat someone.”

Lear, however, is looking past the top sports and deeper into the year than the fall season.

“Even in the small sports, Joliet West won the girls bowling state title and they won a cheerleading state title. Joliet Central had 200 kids go out for boys soccer last year and they are tough,” Lear said. “So, you look at the sports that some people don’t always notice and they are tough and they are going to bring a lot into the conference that will help our kids.

“The Joliet schools will bring some fantastic basketball teams to this league. We know they will be tough and it will just make the league better. We have had a few really good years, so has Plainfield East and Minooka.

This will challenge our kids and that will make them better. We are excited for what they bring to us, I truly believe they will make us an even better conference and we are happy to have them.”

Wisconsin Dells newer course a gem

Wild Rock Golf Club is a part of the Wilderness Resort located in Wisconsin Dells. Built around the turn of the decade, Wild Rock is a great stop for those looking for a golfing spot to get away from the kids for a few hours.

The course was in pristine shape with few divots and even fewer ball marks on the greens, making the greens putt as true as possible.

Before we even began play we saw two deer on the trip to the first hole and then another one passing us on the first fairway.

Speaking of the first hole, it is a 530-yard par-5 from the blue tees (2nd longest). It plays relatively straight but there is a creek in front of the green, making you lay up instead of trying to reach the green in two.

Next is the second hole at 399 yards with a sharp dogleg right.

You can cut off some serious distance by playing right, but if you end up hitting it straight, you can go through the fairway.

A 446-yard par-4 is next where a straight shot is needed, followed by an accurate approach to a green surrounded by bunkers and a big ridge on the right side of the green.

The fourth hole is the first par3 that has water creeping out in front of the green, making it difficult at 186 yards. The fifth hole plays at just 325 yards, but it is uphill to the green with a bunker in the middle of the fairway.

At 551 yards, the sixth hole is long and difficult, but it does play downhill with some great views in the distance. A bunker awaits in the fairway about 100

yards out and another one is just in front of the green with the pin tucked behind it when we played.

Another long downhill tee shot is next at 460 yards, with another bunker in the middle of the fairway.

A dogleg left par-4 is next to a short green with trouble left of the green. The front nine finishes with a par-3 with a bunker to each side of the green.

The uphill, 541-yard 10th hole is a dogleg right with a bunker yet again in range of your tee shot in the middle of the fairway. There is another bunker guarding the green. The 11th hole plays 223 yards and is a long par-3 with little trouble in front of the green.

A rock wall guards the 12th hole down the closing portion of the fairway and green, making accuracy more important on the par-4. The 13th hole is a dogleg left, but there is trouble left with a pair of bunkers and thick rough, leading to an uphill and possibly blind approach shot.

The 14th hole is a tight par-4 with a quarry down the left side of the fairway. There is also a fairway bunker about 50 yards in front of the green. the 15th hole is a 166-yard par-3 entirely over the quarry, making it a difficult tee shot.

At 415 yards, the 16th hole plays relatively straightforward with some trouble for wayward shots. The 17th hole is a short par-4 that doglegs a little left, but there a plenty of trouble left and bailing out right is a good idea and will still give you a solid shot at the green.

The closing hole is a par-4 with a long and narrow green. The hole plays relatively short, but

ADDISON – Liz Johnson came into the stepladder finals of the US Women’s Open Sunday at Stardust Lanes in Addison as the No. 4 seed, meaning she would have to win four straight matches to defend her championship.

Johnson did just that, defeating Shannon Pluhowsky 208-143 in the championship match to win her fifth US Open title.

“The higher the pressure the better I focus,” Johnson said. “I felt more comfortable today and made the shots when I needed to. In these conditions, filling the frames was crucial. This was one of the biggest grinding tournaments I have ever been apart of. That is what makes it a major. To be a part of the category of having five US Opens, it just hit me.”

In the first round of the stepladder finals Johnson defeated Kelly Kulick, the No. 5 seed, 207168. In the second round Johnson overcame a foul on the first ball in the 10th frame to top New Hui Fen of Singapore 215-200.

“I think I was more in shock of the foul because I had already thrown my second ball,” Johnson said. “Every other time I was two inches behind the foul line, so I might have just gotten a little fast.

I took a deep breath and had to make another good shot.”

Pluhowsky qualified as the top seed after an impressive final qualifying performance, shooting totals of 1,774 and 1,702 to vault much of the field.

“When things are going good it is easy to be excited,” Pluhowsky said. “I came out today and the lanes didn’t play similar to how they played all week. You have to take the good with the bad and move on.”

Schaumburg’s Jodi Gawlik missed the TV finals by one spot, finishing in sixth place with an 11,706 grand total, eight pins behind fifth place Kulick.

The Voyager Media coverage area had five locals compete in the Open, but none made the cut. However, Courtney Johnston of Joliet, a Minooka graduate, finished in the money, taking 52nd place with a 4,631 total, claiming $1,450. The top 47 players made the cut.

Megan Szczepanski of Lockport came in 64th place (4,558), Taylor Bailey of Joliet was 87th (4,459), Autumn Lee of Plainfield was 108th (4,323) and Allyson Ware of Lockport was 137th (3,947).

setup, the PWBA has decided to stage multiple TV finals at one location. After the conclusion of the US Open, there were three more TV finals broadcasted for tape delay on CBS Sports the rest of the month.

Tournament finals from Lexington, Kentucky, Rochester, New York and Seminole, Florida were all finished in Addison after the qualifying earlier in the summer at the host cities.

It makes it for a long day for the broadcasters and some bowlers who are in multiple TV finals, but it makes sense for the production crews and relatively tight budgets for bowling.

There is a lot of work to put in for all television broadcasts, but the setup for bowling broadcasts is as difficult as there is in any sport. A broadcast booth and camera are set up behind the bowlers, while bleachers and half walls are put up behind and to the side of the lanes being used.

Additional bleachers are on the other side down the lane and the set of lanes are closed off.

But the light fixtures used throughout the lanes might be the most tedious of all jobs as 25-plus lights illuminate the TV pair. If you have ever been in a bowling alley before, you know how dark they typically are, so these are needed to keep the light for TV. With the difficult and costly

That makes it quite unique.

of the course and the challenges, make this course a good course to play when traveling to the Wisconsin Dells area.

You probably want to book early though as tee times in the summer fill up fast.

Be sure to try to keep your ball on the same side as the flag though on the green as the slopes on many of the greens can lead to tricky putts.

“It was awesome,” Johnson said. “Chicago is a great bowling town. I’m a partial resident to the Chicago area right now and I’ve bowled in this center many times.

The fans here are awesome. It was a great crowd this afternoon and it was awesome to see. We have so many great female bowlers out there, it is exciting.”

“It was great,” Pluhowsky said.

“The fans showed up all week and were excited. The Pro-Am was great. There were a bunch of kids here who were excited about bowling and they are the future of our sport. Chicago is a great bowling city.”

The total nest egg is a little over $1.5 million, with $300,000 of that in CDs. There’s

also a $317,000 annuity, a 403(b) and around $900,000 in IRA mutual funds. I also have two homes and a new car that are paid for. How do you think I should handle things going forward?

Joan Dear Joan, I’m really sorry to hear about your husband, but you two did a fantastic job with your finances. You’re worth at least $1.5 million, and you have no debt. You’re set for life, but you’re wise to want to be careful.

The CDs give you some stability, but obviously they’re not earning much of anything. I think of them as money kicked up in a hammock — it’s not working for you. You both worked hard for that money, so personally I’d like to see it working

hard for you now. If you’ve had good luck with a variable annuity, that’s fine. You’ve also had very good luck with your mutual fund investing.

So, with all this money in different areas, you’re definitely diversified.

It’s just a matter of wrapping your arms around it all and developing a deeper understanding of things going forward.

As more is known about age-related diseases, it becomes increasingly critical to understand the needs of dementia and how those differ from others in crisis.

“There are so many misdiagnosis that greater awareness of dementia is needed to recognize the early signs,” said Johnsrud. “This is what we do. This is what we are all about and want to make sure we are doing all we can for the community. This is our obligation as an industry leader.”

In what began as a single training session, grew into a program that looked to train all first responders on staff. Senior Star believes this distinctive partnership has poised Daley’s to be better prepared as first responders to hundreds of older

adults, especially those who have Alzheimer’s or dementia.

“Participating in this training is vital and should be the national standard of care for all first responders,” said Randy Manns, a paramedic and director for Daley’s Ambulance. Manns, who has been with the company for 30 years, knows first hand the benefits of this training because his father was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s.

“It was like unlocking the key to what those who have dementia are experiencing,” added Laura Daley, marketing manager and granddaughter of founder John Daley, Jr. “Our entire staff is very proud to have completed this training and we have already seen evidence of its value on calls where our paramedics are now able to recognize the behaviors of dementia and respond in a more effective manner.”

Daley’s has now made it

mandatory for every new employee to participate in dementia training so that they are able to identify specific needs and respond appropriately.

Their partner company, Bud’s Ambulance Service, which responds to 911 calls in 13 communities on the Southside of Chicago also will be requiring its first responders to complete this training.

“Our role as a community leader is to educate as well as provide innovative services to older adults.

We see tremendous value in offering this powerful educational tool and philanthropic outreach,” said Johnsrud. “We are proud to play a key role in helping Daley’s serve hundreds of seniors in a more effective way.”

Daley’s, which has been in business for more than 60 years, serves the residents of Will, Cook, Grundy, Kendall and DuPage Counties with private ambulance service.

Crossroads Parade marches crowds to annual festival Thousands head to Shorewood to celebrate Crossroads Festival’s 40th anniversary The sound of clapping, cheering and even drumming rolled through the streets of Shorewood Sunday, as the Crossroads Parade kicked off the final day of the village’s annual summer festival.

Paraders took to the streets Aug. 7, marching west along River Road from Geneva Street toward Wynstone Drive. The parade, which was part of the annual Crossroads Festival, also helped the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce’s effort to grow local businesses and connect to the community.

“This is a very hometown feel,” said Carol Wagner, president of the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce. “A lot of [residents] get involved. It’s a way for local businesses to come together.”

The 40th anniversary of the threeday Crossroads Festival officially got underway Friday. Among the many attractions made available to the public were a petting zoo, a 26foot climbing wall, live music, and plenty of delicious food.

This year’s festival had a “hometown carnival” theme. As part of the celebration, more than 50 floats were slated to appear in the parade.

Joe VanDuyne, an alderman for

Wilmington Township, said he enjoyed his time at Crossroads Festival. Although this year was VanDuyne’s first time attending the event, he said he was excited by everything being offered.

“I brought my friends and family out to walk with me and help support me for my candidacy,” he said.

VanDuyne is running for the sixth district seat on the Will County Board, which includes the village of Shorewood. He said the parade is a good way to meet the people of he is hoping to represent elected to the county board.

“I probably shake over 500 hands throughout all the different parades,” he said. “It’s a great way to meet all the hardworking taxpayers in Will County.”

Letitia Shakespeare, of Plainfield, was also making the most of her time at the parade.

“I came to enjoy my time and have fun and network with different people,” she said.

Shakespeare has attended Crossroads Festival regularly over the years, including each day of the 2016 fest.

“I like the vendors and expo part,” she said, adding that she was looking to buy jewelry.

“I like to see all the floats and the people,” he said. “The floats are creative and the people are happy.”

Baltz noted that he plans on attending the last day of this year’s festival, and said he tends to enjoy hanging out in the entertainment

tent.

“Usually, if I stop in the entertainment tent, I see a lot of my neighbors or people who I haven’t seen for a while,” he said.

Among the bands performing this year were Brass from the Past, Libido Funk Circus, Strung Out, Hi Infidelity and Back Country Roads.
