Prepping for the season, and the future Summer camp for more than sports at Joliet West

As summer vacation winds down, students are returning to area high schools for camp. But it’s not just football, cross country and the cheer team showing up on campus.

At Joliet West High School, 32 members of the speech team spent a week prepping for the upcoming season, and having a little fun along the way.

Arts and Communication Academy educator Kristin Blake is head coach of West’s speech team.

Blake said students use camp to write and practice, but part of camp is dedicated to fun and team bonding, with activities including games, discussions, and even a scavenger hunt.

“It’s business and then fun, every day,” Blake said. “Speech team is a very beautiful thing. It’s like a sport in that it’s very competitive.”

Speech is an IHSA sanctioned event, and the season is a long one. Joliet West competes in about 10 tournaments per year from October to February, followed by regionals, sectionals, and state.

Speech consists of 14 events in four categories – acting, reading, speaking, and limited preparation.

The team competes against other schools during the season, in competitions that start on Saturday mornings and can run through dinnertime.

Being a member takes a significant amount of time and dedication. Once the school year begins, Blake will hold auditions for novice players, and the team will eventually total about 40 students.

Last year, three students made it to the state tournament.

gan Beene competes in Special Occasion Speaking (SOS), a persuasive speech about a topic, presented to a specific audience.

As she works on this year’s piece, Beene said speech has given her confidence she’ll use beyond high school.

“I feel like I’m being prepared for the future,” Beene said. “Every week I present to three different audiences, sometimes four, within a day, and they’re random people I don’t see on the daily. We’re all dressed in suits, and it just puts me in a strange environment where I’m forced to prosper. I feel that when I do enter the work force, I’ll be comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

Senior Madi Schott will enter the 2018-19 season in her fourth year in Radio.

Participants are given news clips, and use those to create a radio newscast of international, national, and local news, sports, weather, and a commercial. The competitors have 45 minutes to prep their piece, which cannot go longer than five minutes, five seconds.

“It brings out something in me that nothing else ever has,” Schott said. “I’ve always been the type of person to want to try something, but I never put my full effort into it. But [speech] brought me somewhere that nothing else ever did.”

Schott said she plans to attend college and study radio broadcasting. She agrees being a part of speech team has given her some real skills for her future.

“I would tell people to do speech team because we take something that the world is afraid of, and we make it our strong suits,” Schott said. “Everybody, in some way, shape, or form, is nervous to talk in SEE WEST PAGE 3

Village looks to secure construction sites Board members disagree on effectiveness of proposal

Shorewood officials will decide this month if they’ll put additional safety requirements on builders looking to construct homes in town.

The board began discussions on adding an ordinance requiring fencing around all construction projects earlier this summer, following a meeting of the Citizens Advisory Board. Members of that board voiced concerns that as the housing market grows in Shorewood, subdivisions under construction are becoming a hazard, with partially built homes being under construction adjacent to homes already completed and occupied. The members of the board were worried that children, out of natural curiosity, would have easy access to some of these sites.

The ordinance would require residential construction built within 200 feet of an occupied dwelling to have three feet of fencing around the perimeter of the project, until the structure is completed secured with all windows, doors, and overhead doors installed and locks on all points of entry are operational.

The fencing would also require a “no trespassing” sign.

While the ordinance was up for approval in July, board members voiced wondered if the change was necessary.

“I understand the concept, my question is, is this enforceable?

Meaning, they get the fence up, and the guys are out there working all day, when they leave, how do we know that it’s secure,” said Trustee Cookie Kirkland. “The point of it is the safety of children, so if it’s really for the safety of children, and it’s not really enforceable, then we’re

wasting our time.”

Chief Building Official Don Plass said enforcement is always an issue for any code violation, but the village building and police departments could partner up on this issue.

“If I could work with the police department… just having patrols around and let me know, I could get back to the builder and see if I can get somebody out there. If you don’t have enforcement, the fence doesn’t do much good,” Plass said.

The draft ordinance also includes a requirement for builders to notify occupied residential units in writing five days prior to excavation of the site. Some members of the board said that requirement was a step too far.

“There’s potentially two lots down, two lots around the back, two lots across the street, and now a builder has to make notification five days prior to upwards of 12 to 15 other residents,” said Trustee CC DeBold. “What if they don’t make notifications… We don’t have issues with kids falling in holes. We don’t have a regional rash of kids falling in holes.”

“I think we’re creating a problem that’s not there,” added Trustee Dan Anderson. “I think it’s going to be too hard to keep track of and to enforce, and I just think government is getting in the way of people doing business here. I think government is creating a problem that isn’t there.”

But board member Anthony Luciano said the village doesn’t have to wait for disaster before taking action. Luciano noted that the draft was written following input from members of the community and addresses only builders who are building in a subdivision where other homes are already occupied.

“We seem to have the sense that

Blake said the blend of drama and competition provides a good base for students as they come of age.

“It’s going to prepare them for the rest of their lives,” Blake said. “It gives them confidence, it gives them lasting friendships, it teaches them how to work hard at something. I think it sets the ground work for pretty

since nothing has ever happened, then we shouldn’t address it. I seem to believe the other way. I seem to believe that if we see something that could become a problem, that we address it and put the things in place to stop it,” Luciano said. “You can go around this village every day and you’ll find more violations, not only in code, in building, in everything else. Does that mean we should throw the ordinance book away? This is a safety precaution for little children. We’re not asking for a brick wall around it, we’re asking something for a deterrent for a small child not to run into the holes or fall into something and get injured. It may never happen, it hasn’t happened yet. But, I don’t think it’s that much we’re asking for.”

Luciano did agree that the written notification in the ordinance was likely unnecessary.

Mayor Rick Chapman also made a public statement in favor of the draft ordinance.

“I want to go on record, that ordinance doesn’t go far enough,” Chapman said. “We’re out to protect the children, the little toddlers in this town. That ordinance doesn’t go far enough.”

“I just love the people that I’m surrounded by,” Beene said “We’re such a good group of students, we represent the school well. We’re all so passionate about this art and being with so many people passionate about one thing is really inspiring. It’s such a cool energy to be around.”

There are currently 18 homes under construction in the village that would be affected by the ordinance.

The board tabled the issue on July 24, to amend the draft docu-

ment.

An approval would amend the Shorewood Village Code with respect to Residential Construction Sites. The board is expected to vote on the issue on Aug. 14.

Lincoln the first president to make use of electronic mass media

BY STEVE TARTER Of the Journal Star of Peoria FDR used the radio, JFK scored on TV and Donald Trump expouses on Twitter. But the first president to make effective use of electronic communications was Abraham Lincoln.

His use of the telegraph, a tool used extensively during the Civil War, was one of the things that made Lincoln a unique communicator in tumultuous times.

“Two things set Lincoln apart in terms of his relationship with, and mastery of, the press,” said Harold Holzer, author of “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion,” published in 2015. “His language was simple and direct enough to make press reprints of his speeches especially compelling.

Second, he courted journalists from the beginning of his career.”

Holzer, director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College in New York City, added two more things: “(Lincoln) drafted editorials for his Whig and Republican newspapers and owned a newspaper, himself (as did his arch-rival, Stephen A. Douglas),” he said.

The newspaper that Lincoln purchased — in secret — was a pro-Republican, German-language paper published in Springfield just prior to the 1860 presidential election. “State legislators bought and distributed the paper in their districts,” said James Cornelius, curator of the Lincoln Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield.

Cornelius said Lincoln’s rise in Illinois politics was marked by a close relationship with the press. “He was often in newspaper offices up and down the state in the 1830s and 1840s. Hanging around a newspaper office was a good place to shoot the breeze — and exchange information. He also wrote a lot that was published anonymously during that time,” he said.

William Herndon, Lincoln’s Springfield law partner, observed Lincoln’s relationship with the press firsthand.

Writing in 1886, he noted: “In common with other politicians, he never overlooked a newspaperman who had it in his power to say a good or bad thing of him. The press of that day was not so powerful an institution as now, but am-

bitious politicians courted the favor of a newspaperman with as much zeal as the same class of men have done in latter days.”

Herndon recalled Lincoln writing to an editor of a small country paper in southern Illinois. “’I have been reading your paper for three or four years and have paid you nothing for it,’ Lincoln wrote. He then encloses $10 and admonishes the editor with innocent complacency: ‘Put it into your pocket, saying nothing further about it,’” he said.

Not long after, Lincoln sent an article “on political matters” to the editor - who declined to publish the piece “because I long ago made it a rule to publish nothing as editorial matter not written by myself.”

“Although the laugh was on Lincoln, he enjoyed the joke heartily,” noted Herndon, recalling Lincoln saying, “That editor has a rather lofty but proper conception of true journalism.”

True journalism wasn’t always on display in the newspapers that reigned in Lincoln’s era. Editors were not shy about taking stands — or taking shots — at the nation’s leaders.

“Let’s just say that the openly, proudly partisan editors of the Lincoln era — Republicans like Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune and Democrats like Manton Marble of the New York World — would not be surprised at all that today’s media outlets, like Fox and MSNBC, display the same kind of doctrinaire leanings, except (the networks of the 21st century) don’t like to admit it,” said Holzer.

“Partisanship was deeply embedded in the American press tradition, from the days of John Adams onward,” he said.

In talking about the “reliability” of newspapers, Lincoln is said to have joked, “They lie and then they re-lie.”

But Lincoln also said, “No man, whether he be private citizen or President of the United States, can successfully carry on a controversy with a great newspaper, and escape destruction unless he owns a newspaper equally great, with a circulation of the same neighborhood.”

Lincoln learned how to deal with a divided press just as he did with a divided country. “Mr. Lincoln understood the power of the press. He well understood the excesses of the media, especially during his presidency. On the whole, he was thick-skinned, but he did object to

falsehoods, calumnies, libel and slander,” noted Lewis Lehrman, author of “Lincoln at Peoria: The Turning Point.”

“Lincoln’s genius with the press consisted primarily in presenting arguments for the Union cause and emancipation which prevailed over the common prejudices of the day. His fairmindedness, even in the face of vicious press attacks, was apparent to all — in the end, even to his enemies,” Lehrman said.

Holzer suggested that a lifetime of reading, writing and negotiating with newspapers laid the groundwork for what Lincoln was able to do as president: reach the public with letters to the editor spelling out his positions on some of the much-debated issues of the day.

“With his dramatic letters of 1862 and 1863, Lincoln in some ways wrote the big three New York editors out of the equation when it came to molding public opinion,” the historian noted.

Lincoln’s habit of maintaining close ties with members of the press as president didn’t always set well with members of his Cabinet. Writing in his diary in 1864, Navy Secretary Gideon Welles complained: “It is an infirmity of the President that he permits the little news mongers to come around him and be intimate, and in this he is encouraged by (Secretary of State William) Seward, who does the same, and even courts the corrupt and the vicious, which the President does not. He has great inquisitiveness. Likes to hear all the political gossip as much as Seward. But the President is honest, sincere and confiding — traits which are not so prominent in some by whom he is surrounded.”

When it came to using the technology of the day, Lincoln learned about sending messages by wire from Charles Tinker, a telegraph operator he met at the Tazewell House hotel in Pekin in 1857.

By the time he moved to Washington in 1860, Lincoln was well aware of how the telegraph operated and ways he could use it, stated Tom Wheeler, author of “Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War.” Lincoln not only installed a telegraph office at the White House but used that office as a situation room, allowing the president to communicate with field commanders in the nearest thing to real time that was available in the 1860s, noted Wheeler, adding that Lincoln sent out almost 1,000 telegrams during his time in the executive office.

Plainfield North’s Marcellus Moore was named the 2018 Gatorade Illinois boys track athlete of the year

In May, Plainfield North sophomore Marcellus Moore became the first Tiger to win an individual state track and field state title.

In fact, he won two.

Moore won the 100-meter dash with a state-record time of 10.31 seconds and claimed the title in the 200 with a time of 21.30.

He also anchored the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams that claimed state titles, giving Moore four gold medals in the event.

“At the age of 14 as a freshman when he ran 10.40, no 14-yearold in the history of the world has ever run a faster time,” said North coach Tony Holler. “At sectional he ran a 20.88 in the 200 and I looked that up and the record for a 15-year old was 20.58 by Usain Bolt. That kind of tells you, this is not just a kid who wins races, it is

something special.”

For his accomplishments, he was tabbed as the 2017-18 Gatorade Illinois Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Moore as Illinois’s best high school boys track and field athlete.

“Honestly, I had no idea I was even in the running,” Moore said.

“It was really all a big surprise when I found out I was a finalist.

I woke up like seven in the morning and saw on Twitter that I was Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year, I jumped out of bed and went and showed my dad. I was thrilled.”

While it may not get the notoriety nation wide, in Plainfield track and field has been a key story for a long time.

“A few years ago, the four coaches got together and we decided to call Plainfield Tracktown,” Holler said. “In track, we are much more together than we are rivals. You don’t have to hate your opponent to perform well. I think it makes us all better.”

Going back to the Winder brothers racking up pole vault titles to Kahmari Montgomery winning the sprint triple crown his senior season — and now Moore puts the village on the national radar again.

“Plainfield is really big for track,” Moore said. “For me, it started with Kahmari. I have known him for a long time and always looked up to him and I always wanted to fill his shoes or be better than him.”

Moore, who already bettered Montgomery’s state finals times

in the 100 and 200 will look to add the 400 to his resume and repeat the triple crown — and he has two more years to do it.

“I want to continue to get faster,” he said. “Next year, I know there will be big target on my back and I know there will be some more pressure, but I know I will be OK.” And after North, Moore has higher goals that may not be unattainable.

“I want to get my education paid for, but I also want to make the Olympic team and run for my country someday,” he said. “It has got to a point where dreams have become reality and more of my goals could be reality and if I just keep working hard, I can achieve those goals.”

Moore is not only an outstanding athlete.

He has maintained a weighted 4.32 GPA in the classroom, is devoted member of his church community. He has also volunteered locally on behalf of Feed My Starving Children, Cradles to Crayons and a youth football program.

“You hear all the time that someone is a better person than

they are an athlete, but he really is a special kid,” Holler said. “The first word that comes to mind is humble and the second word is competitive and that is such a weird mix. He is such a good guy, but he runs like an assassin. The best sprinters have a reckless confidence about them and that sometimes makes them hard to deal with, but Marcellus breaks that mold. I don’t know if I have ever coached someone who is so universally liked.”

As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Moore was able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.

Moore selected the Aurora Flyers Track Club as his beneficiary.

He also completed a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support in order to attempt to win an extra $10,000 spotlight grant for the Flyers.

“I chose the Aurora Flyer Track Club because the organization has done so much for me and has played a huge role in getting me where I am today,” Moore said. “I wanted to give back.”

Benedictine going Division-II

The NCAA Division II Membership Committee announced July 13, 2018 that Benedictine University has been granted access to the NCAA Division II membership process, thus paving the way for the Eagles to become the 16th member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) prior to the 2019-20 academic year.

“In January of 2017 we formed a committee on campus to review the process of making a decision from Benedictine jumping from [Division] three to [Division] two,” Benedictine Athletics Director Mark McHorney said. “At the end of the meeting we wanted to present the situation to the board of trustees, and after it reached the president we showed all of our findings.”

On February 1, 2018, Benedictine successfully submitted application for NCAA Division II membership.

A multiyear venture, the NCAA Division II membership process prepares applying institutions for a successful transition. The provisional process for Benedictine is a minimum of three years that includes opportunities for education, assessment and growth, as well as a chance to fully integrate the Division II philosophy, strategic positioning platform and best practices to be a successful Division II institution.

“The GLVC Council of Presidents is pleased to welcome Benedictine University as our next member, following our unanimous endorsement of the recommendation from the league’s faculty athletic representatives last fall,” Dr. Rob Manuel, University of Indianapolis President and Chair of the GLVC Council of Presidents said in a press release.

During interim year one of the membership process (2018-19), Benedictine will still compete in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC), and the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC).

Due to acceptance into the Division II membership process, Benedictine will not be eligible to compete in NCAA DIII Championships, however the Eagles are eligible to

win regular-season league titles and can also have student-athletes earn All-Conference honors.

During this time, Benedictine

will begin implementing Division II policies and procedures, but will not offer student-athletes any athletic scholarships.

Debt isn’t positive thing; don’t cash out retirement DEAR DAVE, I owe $18,000 on my only car, and the payments are killing me. I’m also upside down on the vehicle by about $4,000. I’m 31, and I’ve got exactly $18,000 in my 401(k). Should I cash it in to pay off the car?

Monty DEAR MONTY, If you use your 401(k) they’ll charge you a 10 percent penalty, plus your tax rate. That means you’ll probably lose anywhere from 25 to 50 percent to the government.

I don’t know about you, but I think they already get too much of our money. I love the fact that you want to get rid of your car payment, but I don’t want you to cash out your retirement plan to make it happen. If you can pay off the car in 18 months or less, I’d advise living on a strict, written budget, and throwing as money as possible toward the car debt until it’s out of your life forever.

If it would take longer than 18 months to pay it off, I’d get rid of the car. To do this, you’d have to sell it for as much as you can get, then go to a local credit union for a small loan to cover the difference. If it’s your only car, you’d need to ask for an extra $2,000 to $3,000 to buy a little beater to drive until you can save up and get into something better.

I hate all kinds of debt, Monty. But being $5,000 to $6,000 in the hole is a lot better than having $18,000 in debt hanging over your head!

Festival Details. From 4 until 11 p.m., five local blues bands will be grooving at the band shell in downtown Joliet. Beer, wine and food will be available.
