Village hosts commemoration of Lidice Tragedy COURTESY OF THE VILLAGE OF CREST HILL On Saturday, June 10, the City of Crest Hill once again held a ceremony to honor the memory of the Lidice tragedy. It was on

this day in 1942, the Nazi’s swept through the small Czechoslovakian town and, as a result, took the lives of about 340 people (192 men, 60 women, and 88 children).

But the tragedy and the lives taken during that event are never forgotten. Every year the City of Crest Hill along with the Czechoslovakian American Congress hold a memorial service for those who lost their lives and those who were affected by the Lidice tragedy.

This year marked the 75th Anniversary of “Lidice.” Senator Pat McGuire presented the CAC with a Senate Recognition declaring the State of Illinois will always remember Lidice and those who lost their lives. Mayor Ray Soliman also presented the CAC with a Proclamation commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the tragedy at Lidice.

Others who were in attendance during the ceremony included Will County Executive Larry Walsh, State Representative Natalie Manley, and Czechoslo-

vak American Congress President John Pritasil.

Nearly 200 people were there to support and memorialize the memory of the victims of Lidice.

Council urges Rialto to book more diversity Several members wanted Rialto to seek greater diversity in shows chosen

After debate the night before at a public meeting, Joliet officials took time June 20 to discuss the Rialto Square Theatre’s progress in fulfilling its obligation to the city.

In late 2016, the council agreed to extend $500,000 in two installments to the theatre contingent on its ability to book or have hosted 30 performances by July 1.

The council took time to seek information from Rialto officials to examine the way the theatre accomplished this feat.

“I’ve received a revised list of shows and performances—which actually if now you look at the revised list, now it has additional shows—I want to let the council know it looks like they’ve met

the 30 shows, so we will be issuing the second installment for the $250,000,” Interim City Manager Marty Shanahan said.

When considering what shows to bring to town, Rialto officials take a look at a number of factors, including Facebook presence, popularity, routing and past ticket sales.

Several council members wanted Rialto officials to seek greater diversity in the shows they bring to town and cited concerns for the theatre relying on programming geared toward children.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk questioned the extent to which the theatre is looking to draw in acts to appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds.

“Are there acts coming that will appeal?” he asked. “It’s fine that you have acts for kindergarten kids and for 60-year-olds, but what about everyone in between?”

Rialto Square Theatre executive director Valerie Devine tried to explain.

“A lot also has to do with the fact that we are still very heavily based in a co-promote situation, which

means the Rialto, due to being financially, fiscally responsible, is not taking a lot of risks on a show,” she said. “When we find an artist, we need to be able to find someone to partner with to make that show happen. A lot of times thus far it has been VenuWorks burdening the financial risk of a show, but sometimes it’s another promoter coming to us.”

The Rialto didn’t get into the financial situation it is overnight, Devine said.

“We are working in the direction,” she said. “Because we are in a no-risk situation, we have to find people that are willing to partner with us. Each and every show that we do builds our credibility back in the market with the agents that they worked with for a very long time, or that I’ve worked with for a very long time, and gets us back on their radar screen again to remember that when particular artists are SEE RIALTO PAGE 4

Area organizations seek solutions to funding woes Committee met to gather input from area nonprofits concerning available funding

City of Joliet Diversity and Community Relations Committee met recently to gather input from area nonprofits concerning available funding.

The meeting was held following a recent public meeting where Mayor Bob O’Dekirk suggested the city look toward finding a way to support organizations in the community.

While some organizations reportedly receive state and federal funding to maintain their operations, others do not.

Uncertainty surrounding funds set the narrative for the speakers representing nonprofits at the meeting as representatives sought answers to their financial woes.

“Ultimately, what kind of story do you want Joliet to tell?” asked Stephanie Castillo, immigration advisor and advocacy specialist for

Spanish Community Center. “Is it a story of blight, of suffering, and a bleak landscape? Or will we move towards prioritizing the health of our community towards rejuvenating our community?”

Castillo said the truth is the people who utilize the Spanish Community Center work hard and they seek support, they’re not just looking for a handout. To say anything to the contrary is false, she said.

“This isn’t about not working hard enough, or some trite explanation of the American Dream, this is about survival and this is about basic human rights,” she said. “I’ve reached a certain point in my life where I can say with certainty that we don’t need kind leaders. I need you to be courageous, I need you to pursue rational approaches, I need you to take a stand against historical injustices that include but are not limited to poverty and inequality and marginalization.”

community, and wanted people to know she remains optimistic in supporting the cause.

“My hope is that my position at the Spanish Community Center is rendered obsolete,” she said. “I hope that day is very soon, and we can covert the Spanish Community Center into a museum—a place of celebration—but it must start today.”

Other organizations with representation at the meeting included the Warren-Sharpe Community Center, Harvey Brooks Foundation and Community Lifeline Ministries.

“The Spanish Center should not and cannot go away, just like

none of these centers,” said Shawn Marconi, executive director of WillGrundy Medical Clinic.

Marconi referenced research showing that safety nets, like the Spanish Community Center, reduce poverty and the return on investment is immense.

Marconi wants people to think about lending people a hand-up, not a handout.

“We have to step away from looking at the impoverished as a drag,” she said. “Believe it or not, the lower-income, working class, lower middle class—that’s the engine of this community… They’re not pocketing millions and thousands of dollars. They’re putting it right back into the community. You own a grocery store. Then, these low-income people are keeping your stores open. You own property, they are paying your bills because they’re paying your rent.”

Several speakers commented on the city’s efforts to rejuvenate the Rialto Square Theatre and criticized the council for letting their inaction to support area nonprofit organizations serve as action.

took a moment to note the effort the city is putting forth, and wanted it to be clear that Joliet values its nonprofit organizations for all they do.

“I believe at the last council meeting the mayor stated he was going to look into some funding for all the centers that are having difficulties, not just the Spanish Center,” she said.

Councilman Terry Morris suggested that organizations in need submit a proposal for consideration by the council.

“I don’t want to speak for the full council, but I would be willing to sit down and look at something like that—whether it be a loan, or whether it be some type of stipend, to help until the state comes up with something,” he said.

Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said she would supports the idea raised by Morris, as well as other potential outcomes.

“I think one of the outcomes of this particular meeting is not only to get the city involved, but to get some of the other governmental agencies involved, as well,” she said.

Silver Cross provides scholarships to Hispanic/ Latino Coalition MORE INFO

HLC awarded $8K in scholarships from grant through Healthy Community Commission The Hispanic/Latino Coalition (HLC) of Will County recently awarded $8,000 in scholarships from a grant through the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission. Each of the following students received a $1,000 Dr. Daniel Gutierrez scholarships: Veronica Briceno, Stephanie Cardenas, Alondra Flores, Yareley Gonzalez, Josie Mateo, Miryam Perez, Luis Quiroz, and Lesley Ulloa Aldap.

“The HLC is proud again to work with the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission to support local students on their college endeavors and hopes to increase the community’s awareness of education by continuing to build strong relationships within the community,” said Cesar Cardenas, President of the Hispanic/Latino Coalition of Will County.

In order to qualify for the Dr. Daniel Gutierrez Scholarship, students must be of Hispanic/Latino decent, a first generation college student, enrolled at Joliet Township High Schools, and a high school senior or college fresh-

Councilwoman Jan Quillman questioned why the theatre isn’t performing like the Waukegan theatre with all the different shows and events they’re set to host this summer.

“How do they do it?” she said.

“Why can’t the Rialto?”

Rialto Board Chairman Robert Filotto questioned what Quillman knew about the Waukegan theatre’s financial situation.

Quillman suggested that Rialto officials look into it and said this baffles her.

“Naming this scholarship after Dr. Gutierrez is a great honor to someone who has dedicated himself to the Joliet community and to the eastside of Joliet,” said Margie Woods, Chair of the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission.

Born and raised on Joliet’s Eastside, Dr. Gutierrez began his medical career while attending Joliet Township High School, serving as a surgical orderly at Silver Cross Hospital. He graduated in 1963 from University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago with his medical degree. He completed his internal medicine residency at Hines Veterans Hospital before heading off to Malawi in central Africa to serve as a medical missionary. Dr. Gutierrez was then sent to Vietnam with the U.S. Army where he tended to wounded soldiers and staffed medical clinics for South Vietnamese citizens. In 1972, he returned home and set-up private practice on the Silver Cross Hospital campus, where he practiced internal medi-

cine for nearly 30 years. He retired in the fall of 2007, and served as past Chairman of Silver Cross Hospital’s Board of Directors leading the charge for a state-of-theart replacement hospital to ensure quality healthcare for all residents of Will County. In addition, Dr. Gutierrez has served on the Silver Cross Medical Staff in various leadership positions including Chief of Staff. In recent years, the Joliet Chamber of Commerce and Industry, National Hook-up of Black Women, Joliet Junior College and Silver Cross Hospital have honored him for his commitment to community service.

“The Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission is honored to award the Dr. Daniel Gutierrez Scholarship to 8 deserving area students, who will ideally use Dr. Gutierrez’s life as a model to achieve their own career aspirations,” said Woods.

“The area around it is very depressed, but they get people from all over,” she said.

Shanahan urged Rialto officials to go beyond the partnerships it typically utilizes to bring in more shows.

Councilman John Gerl agreed.

“We want to see a diverse group of entertainment, but we want to make sure that there’s acts being booked to bring people to our downtown, enjoy our fabulous city and our restaurants and that sort of thing,” he said.

Devine said the Rialto is bringing on board some shows, which have not yet been announced that appeal to diverse groups, and the theatre’s ability to draw in differ-

ent acts is progressing little by little with an emphasis on demonstrating fiscal responsibility.

“We really have to look at the artist and see what their pull is,” she said. “I know the children shows were a topic of discussion yesterday, and at a $6 ticket, it’s amazing that their break-even is right around 100 tickets with the sponsorship that we have. They’re great revenue generators for us at a time when generating revenue with zero risk is very important.”

Devine stressed that Rialto officials do not intend to limit the theatre and its performance.

“We realize the more successful things that we can book, the better it is for everybody,” she said.

And for the past seven years, Caldwell has had good success composting kitchen and yard waste that she generates at home.

Now she’s taking all of that knowledge and putting it to use during a new program at Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township where she works as an interpretive naturalist.

Caldwell will host three “Meet a Composter” sessions from 1-3 p.m. Saturdays, July 15, August 5 and September 16, at the nature center. The program will complement a compost trail exhibit that has been established at the site.

The trail features information about the many ways to compost food and yard waste.

Caldwell said the “Meet a Composter” program will be informal, similar to the nature center’s “Meet a Beekeeper” offering.

For instance, Caldwell said it’s imperative for composters to cut up or grind food scraps before composting them.

“That way, you’re exposing more surface area to the soil,” she explained. “The soil bacteria will get to work on the food or plant waste right away, and it’s a beautiful thing.”

Caldwell has had many successes with her composting efforts at home and work, including being able to compost meat scraps and other odd leftovers in a high-end composting tumbler. But she’s also made mistakes, including dumping too much leftover fruit into a worm composting bin.

“It turned into this awful acid bath that stank and killed the worms,” she confessed.

These days, Caldwell knows just how much sawdust or dry

leaf matter to throw into a bin and how often to tumble a load of scraps or use a pitchfork to turn a composting pile, which accelerates the process that converts scraps to soil. She also has learned how to keep her composting materials from attracting animals – something that’s imperative for would-be composters.

“It’s an art,” she said. “And it’s a science. Take it step by step. It’s OK to make mistakes along the way.”

During the “Meet a Composter” program, Caldwell will be able to discuss a variety of composting methods and equipment, from tumblers to trenches or worm bins.

A composting bin can be as simple as a garbage can with holes drilled into it. She also has tips and advice for newbies who want to get started. For example, she recommends buying a grinder to use on food scraps and notes that it’s important to pack down yard waste as much as possible.

Caldwell said she’s glad she started composting seven years ago at home, and she’s looking forward to sharing all of her knowledge with others who want to turn food and yard waste into rich soil that can be used in gardening and landscaping projects.

“I just really wanted to take action myself,” she said. “I couldn’t stand the fact that food waste was going into the landfill.”

Abilities Expo celebrates community, puts resources under one roof Abilities Expo has been serving the disability community since 1979

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST On June 23, I spent approximately five hours at the Abilities Expo 2017 Chicago at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center. The Abilities Expo is a three-day celebration of the disability community. This is the event for those of us with disabilities to get resources and tools to assist us in our daily lives.

I had an opportunity to talk with David Krose, the president/CEO of the Abilities Expo and its website abilities. com.

The Abilities Expo has been serving the disability community since 1979 with originally only two events—in Los Angeles and just outside of New York City. This Abilities Expo was started by one man’s frustration that his local wheelchair dealer had a very limited selection. David Krose explained that this small idea to give the disability community the opportunity to go shopping for different kinds of mobility tools was revolutionary for the 1970s.

However, in 2008, David and his business partner, Lew Shomer, acquired the Abilities Expo business without really having any personal connection to the disability community.

Nonetheless, under the amazing leadership of David and Lew, the Abilities Expo has grown over the intervening 9 years to eight cities each year.

Each year, members of our disability community can attend, free of charge, any of the Abilities Expos across the country including: northern California, southern California, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Washington D.C., outside of New York City, and for the first time this year, Toronto, Canada.

Today, the Abilities Expo continues to offer admission free of charge, workshops, and an events arena with demonstrations including adaptive sports, wheelchair dancing, and service animals.

one for David Krose. Even though his grandson is on the autism spectrum and David had some friends with disabilities, these circumstances had no impact on him taking ownership of the Abilities Expos. It was merely the fact that he fell in love with the community at these Abilities Expos. David fell in love with what the show was trying to do — bring disability resources under one roof for the disability community to access.

The area of the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center is divided into three halls but Abilities Expo Chicago chose to use all three of them as one big hall. This made the show easily accessible for people with various disabilities. Typically at most other expos, the workshops would be in meeting rooms in a different part of the hotel.

Unique to the Abilities Expo, the workshops and events arena are all located in the same area as the show room floor.

It’s all “under one roof,” as David says.

The workshops use a service called “CART,” which is like a court reporter who types everything being said by the speaker. For attendees who are hearing impaired or have difficulty understanding but are able to read, then they can read the transcriptions on the big screen next to the speaker.

David explained to me one difference between the New York City and Chicago Abilities Expos. In New York City, Micah Fowler, star of ABC’s Speechless, attended the Abilities Expo in May 2017 in New York City. Approximately six months ago, David had received a phone call from Micah’s mom, Tammy, who had explained Micah was a big fan of the Abilities Expo and had been attending 15 years. In New York City’s Abilities Expo, Micah held a 30-minute question and answer session and spent 90 minutes taking photographs with

over 300 attendees.

The Abilities Expo is geared for the entire disability community — both those with visible and invisible disabilities. When David first got involved in the Abilities Expo, he wrongly assumed that this was one big homogeneous community. However, David has come to realize that the disability community has different levels of diagnoses and various needs that people have. A large majority of the people with disabilities who identify themselves on the registration form as being a person with a disability, about 85 percent, have mobility challenges. This includes wheelchairs and power-chairs, for example. Many of the products that lend themselves to a trade show environment are for people with mobility challenges.

According to David, there are very few products for people with vision or hearing impairments or for people who have developmental or cognitive disabilities.

The distributors of mobility products tend to come to the Abilities Expo to reach a large audience. On the other hand, the other not-for-profit organizations and resources come to the Abilities Expo to share their resources across the disability community. In 2016, the Abilities Expo Chicago reached approximately 3500 adults and 800 kids.

The Abilities Expo is a fun celebration.

Public’s help sought for identity of deceased man found The Will County Investigations Division is seeking help from the public in indentifying the deceased man that was found on June 21, 2017 in Green Garden Township. A Will County Highway Department employee advised the Sheriff’s Office that while cutting grass in a ditch, along Manhattan-Monee Road, he discovered a dead body.

On June 22nd, the Will County Coroner performed an autopsy and advised Sheriff’s detectives that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. The body was badly

decomposed and remains unidentified. His ethnicity has not been determined.

Sheriff’s Detectives are continuing their investigation, however,

as of this date they have no leads in their attempt in identifying the man. The man was wearing Clarks brand sandals size 8.5, red shorts, a men’s Burberry watch and a gold ring that is believed to depict St. Jude. He was approximately 5’3” tall with a 32” waist.

A photo has been included of the watch and ring in hopes that someone will recognize the jewelry and be able to assist the Sheriff’s Office with his identity.

It is often difficult for baseball players from small schools to grab the attention of the top colleges and professional scouts.

That was never the case for Joe Donovan.

Sure, his brother Charlie paved a road for Joe, but the younger Donovan hit that road like a runaway 18-wheeler.

As a freshman, he was the starting catcher on a Westmont team that placed fourth in the state in Class 2A and he spent the next three seasons assaulting the Sentinel record books – ending his career holding 20 career records.

He holds the mark for team wins (97), games played (145), runs scored (205), hits (210), extra base hits (99), home runs (36), grand slams (4), RBI (154) and slugging percentage (.891).

This season, Donovan batted .523 with a .628 on base percentage and a 1.171 slugging percentage – all Westmont sin-

gle season records.

For all of that, Joe Donovan is the first-ever recipient of Voyager Media’s Charlie Donovan Player of the Year Award.

This season is the first year the award is named after Charlie Donovan, who was a three-time Voyager Media Player of the Year and died in November of 2015.

It will continue to bear his name going forward.

“This year was a lot of fun,” Joe Donovan said. “I had a part where I had a mini slump, but I came out of it and just had so much fun.”

Playing for a Class 2A school like Westmont, often times Donovan’s numbers are not looked upon as serious as those by players in Class 3A or 4A. “In my opinion, I can hit at any level,” he said. “We played 4A schools. I hit two doubles and a homer off Mt. Carmel and they are as good as they get. Sometimes it can be even harder to hit at a 1A or 2A level. In the summer, I am pounded with fastballs in the 90s and high 80s and legitimate sliders and breaking

I would argue that for good

hitters, it is almost easier to hit good pitching. That is no excuse for not hitting off bad pitchers, because I think good hitters can hit any pitching.

“I have friends that go to big

schools and I get text messages and Snapchats joking around saying that if they were at my school, they would be doing the

JOE FROM PAGE 9 same thing I am and it gets taxing. As much as I just have to play my game, when the awards come and your peers question the level of competition, it is aggravates me.”

Offense is not the only part of Donovan’s game, as he is one of the top defensive catchers in the state as well.

“From his sophomore year through his senior year, he called almost every single pitch,” Westmont coach DJ Cocks said. “He shut the running game down. We hardly had anyone steal on us. He creates strikes for our pitchers by the way he sets up and frames. He is the best blocker I have seen back there as a high school kid and I played college baseball and I think he was better than a lot of the guys I saw in college.”

Donovan said his mental make-up is the reason for his well-rounded success.

“I attribute my success in baseball to my mind and how I go about it,” he said. “Granted, I very fortunate to be blessed with athleticism and I have put

WEDNESDAY, JULY 5, 2017 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM in the work to be a good physical baseball player, but my mindset is more important. I go into it, realizing I can fail so if I do, it doesn’t affect me. I think the biggest thing is compartmentalizing my analytical baseball mind, my emotional baseball mind and my present baseball mind. Those three subsets of consciousness are so intertwined that they can really mess up each other. You have to realize when emotion is necessary, when diving deep into the analytics is necessary and when to just tone all that out and just make an athletic move.”

While Donovan is headed to the University of Michigan next season, he was drafted a few weeks ago by the Chicago Cubs in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft.

If not for his plans to head to Ann Arbor next year, he would have been a much higher selection.

“It was unbelievable (to be drafted),” Donovan said. “Had I wanted to sign professionally, I would have been a higher draft pick, so that was really nice, but that being said it was an incredi-

ble honor to be drafted. I grew up the biggest Cub fan, Charlie was a huge Cub fan, last year I went to the World Series Game 5 – I might have shed a few tears when they won the World Series. I was one of those dummies at the Cubs’ parade sprinting to be up front. So, just the culmination of all my life as a Cubs’ fan and getting drafted by then, it was unbelievable and even though I knew I wasn’t going to sign – a few tears were shed.”

Hits, four home runs and 27 RBI, batting .450 with runners in scoring position. He will be attending Robert Morris in the fall.

JOJO MCNAIR, JOLIET CENTRAL Senior was an outfielder and pitcher for Central. He batted .438 with a .500 on base percentage racking up 39 hits, nine RBI, 26 runs scored and stole 29 bases while being caught only once. He will play baseball and football at Wartburg.

“Jojo is a three-sport athlete who has been at the top of our lineup throughout the season,” said Fitzgerald. “He leads our team in batting average, on-base percentage, hits, runs and stolen bases and has taken away several extra base hits in the outfield.”

Selling family heirloom is bad math This bike is one of your fondest memories - you just don’t sell things like that DEAR DAVE, My husband and I aren’t seeing eye-to-eye on a motorcycle. The bike was my dad’s, and I got it four years ago when he passed away. I’d like to keep it because I grew up riding it with him, and I still ride it today. My husband thinks we should sell it to pay off debt. We make about $60,000 a year, and we have about $36,000 to go before we’re debt-free except for our home. The bike is worth about $2,300. What do you think?

AMANDA DEAR AMANDA, There’s no way I’d sell that bike.

If it were just a miscellaneous motorcycle, I’d sell the thing in about 20 seconds. But this bike is unique and special because it was your dad’s. There’s only one of those in the world.

It’s like a lady in the same scenario saying she has a $2,300 diamond on her hand that’s her wedding ring. Would I tell her to sell it? No way! This bike is very much woven into the fabric of your life and your

fondest memories. As a rule, you just don’t sell things like that.

Now, there may be extreme cases sometimes where a person might have to consider selling something of that magnitude. If you were in a truly awful situation making $10,000 a year and the ring is worth $200,000 while you’re $100,000 in debt, you’d have to give it some thought.

But there’s no way I’d sell that bike in your case!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My fiancé told me the other day he’s going to buy a failing restaurant with his mom, sister, and a family friend. None of them have any food service or business experience, and he has never said anything about wanting to own a restaurant. When I questioned him about it, he said it was his mother’s idea. I don’t want to be part of this, and it wouldn’t be his first big surprise decision, so I told him I would walk away from the marriage if he pursues this. I feel bad about it, because he didn’t

really do anything wrong. Do you think I’m making a wise decision?

CARLA DEAR CARLA, Yes, he did do something wrong.

He put his controlling mommy ahead of his bride-to-be, and it sounds like it’s not the first time he’s made big decisions without consulting you. Any man who doesn’t consider the feelings of his wife or fiancée in an important decisionmaking process is not marriage material. I think your decision was heartbreaking, but wise.

Going into a partnership with family like this is unwise. There’s a lot of messed up stuff in his family dynamic. And it’s not like you won’t support your man and his dreams and decisions, but those dreams need to contain wisdom and con-

sideration for you. Otherwise, any dream will fast become a nightmare.

I know it hurts, Carla, but this was not the right guy for you. Money problems are one of the biggest causes of divorce in America today.

Trouble with in-laws is another, and you almost signed up for both.

I’m sorry you had to make such a tough call.

If you want to salvage this, you could explain to him that he needs to make better decisions to win

your hand again. In this case, making better decisions means involving you in the process, and giving your thoughts, feelings, and opinions the respect they deserve.
