Panel addresses county’s paratransit needs Congressman Bill Foster says putting the issue at the forefront holds great meaning

Bud’s Ambulance marketing manager Laura Daley knows private services such as the one she works for see many challenges in serving as a resource to those needing transportation in Will County.

She said it’s heartbreaking when riders are turned away for lack of coordination between service providers. The tipping point, according to Daley, comes down to issues of economic feasibility and legality.

“That’s where a huge problem starts,” she said. “It’s kind of a huge can of worms from there.”

A number of experts and stakeholders involved in paratransit transportation of seniors and the disabled were on hand last week for a panel discussion on the needs of those living in Will County.

Will County hosted the program to allow for open dialogue on the issues transpiring not only in Joliet, but across the county.

Congressman Bill Foster, D-11th, said putting the issue at the forefront holds great meaning.

“I think that everyone in this world wants the same things for people with disabilities and seniors who have the ability to move about their communities,” he said. “It’s really important for everyone to live their lives without restrictions.”

Foster said he’s pleased by the ways in which transportation providers in the area have responded to service needs, added that the system needs more work.

In 1990, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since that time, public transportation providers such as Pace have made efforts to improve paratransit services individuals living in the communities they serve.

Still, some obstacles still exist.

“Paratransit fares are already subsidized more than any other form of public transit, and they’re consuming an ever-greater portion of transportation agency budgets,” Foster said.

In 2012, paratransit services represented 12 percent of transit agency costs on average. That number, Foster said, will increase as baby boomers begin to retire in greater numbers.

Foster said solutions are needed

to curb transportation costs moving forward, without having a negative impact on services provided.

“I know that many agencies have some success in transitioning more-abled paratransit riders to traditional transit through travel training, vehicle accessibility, and reduced or eliminated fares,” he said. “These are all steps in the right direction, but we need to do more.”

The use of technology, in conjunction to alternative providers, such as Lyft and Uber,

City Council to revisit DriveTime decision Business focused on blood and plasma purchases may be interested in property

The Joliet City Council will reconsider a proposal denying used car retailer and finance company DriveTime a special-use permit.

Officials agreed to revisit the petition at last week’s meeting, after City Manager Jim Hock received new information that a business focused on blood and plasma purchases was interested in the property at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. “Because it’s an allowable use, there’s no city review,” he said.

“They can just come in and get their permits for modification to the interior of the building.”

A number of city officials raised concerns regarding the new development, including Mayor Bob O’DeKirk.

“With DriveTime, they estimated

$200,00 a year in taxes for the city,” he said. “Do we have an estimate on what this blood center would raise for the city?”

Hock said outside of property taxes, the blood and plasma center wouldn’t generate dollars for the city.

For more than two years, the former Century Tile lot has been vacant.

In June, the city received notice of the first of the two proposed business developments. Tempe, Arizona-based DriveTime intended to request a special use permit that would allow officials to review their plans for modifying the site; it was denied.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman noted a concern regarding the legitimacy of the business if it decided to set up shop on Larkin Avenue.

an awfully big place for blood donations,” Quillman said, noting that Heartland Blood Centers utilizes mobile trucks for donations.

“I just don’t know what they would do with the rest of that building.”

Councilman Larry Hug said he’s pleased by the new revelations and the way the city may proceed in filling the vacant lot.

“If this is a real offer, let’s be clear that any objections anybody had here on the original project have to

be addressed,” he said.

City officials noted that a blood center already operates in Joliet at 128 Collins St. Councilman John Gerl said he sees reason to have caution if the blood center takes ownership.

“I’ve never had any experience with [blood donation centers], but it doesn’t sound like a good project to me,” he added.

Ultimately, the council members decided to reconsider the matter at

their Aug. 2 meeting, where a vote is expected on whether the city will rescind DriveTime’s permit denial and grant the special use.

Michael Martin, an attorney representing DriveTime, told the council that operating the business using the vacant lot is still being considered as an option.

“Both parties, DriveTime and Century Tile, are interested in still pursuing the site,” he said.

O’DeKirk said it makes sense to bring the matter back before the council.

“I think it’s something we should revisit,” the mayor said. “I don’t know what the vote of the council would be, but I have no problem if we bring that back at the next meeting and have a debate about this.”

Small airplane crashes in Joliet-Plainfield subdivision Victim of crash in Brighton Lakes subdivision identified as 58-year-old Florida man By jonathan samples managing editor

The victim of a small airplane that crashed in the Brighton Lakes subdivision near the border of Joliet and Plainfield last week has been identified as a 58-year-old Florida man.

The Will County Coroner’s Office identified Garry T. Bernardo as the pilot of the aircraft, which crashed near a home in the 1800 block of Hampton Court at approximately 11 a.m. July 21. Witnesses described seeing a small airplane circling overhead just before hearing a large explosion.

“It sounded like a missile,” said Kelly Marapiglia, who lives two blocks west of where the accident occurred. “Then, [the plane] just dropped and ‘boom,’ and I saw smoke.”

Initially, authorities did not know if there were any passengers in the plane.

“There was obviously the pilot, but we have no idea if there were passengers in the plane,” Joliet City Manager Jim Hock said at the time. “Fire [personnel] are still on scene, and they’re working on the house [fire].”

The plane appeared to have crashed in the street immediately south of the home, which suffered significant fire and structural damage. There were no injuries to anyone in the home or surrounding area.

The accident occurred in the Brighton Lakes subdivision, located less than a quarter-mile from the intersection of Theodore Street and Route 59. The explosion could be heard from as far away as 119th Street and Route 59 on the border of Plainfield and

Naperville, and several witnesses near the crash reported that the blast caused their homes to shake.

“I walked over here right away and saw the debris in the street, and the house was engulfed in flames,” Marapiglia recalled.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said the city called in utility companies to do an evaluation and determine if there were any gas or electrical concerns.

Reports indicate that Bernardo was flying to Wisconsin from

Florida when the accident occurred.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating an exact cause of the crash.

Emergency purchase of Silver Cross Field HVAC unit approved $22,221 emergency purchase of an HVAC unit approved at July 19 meeting

The Joliet City Council approved a $22,221 emergency purchase of an HVAC unit for Silver Cross Field at its July 19 meeting.

The unit, which controls heating and air conditioning in the operating offices for the Slammers baseball team, stopped working recently. As part of Joliet Community Baseball and Entertainment’s lease, the city is responsible for capital

expenditures.

The existing HVAC unit was installed almost 15 years ago, and the city said it is at the end of its life cycle. This, combined with summer heat, prompted officials to purchase a replacement.

The new unit will need to comply with the International Energy Conservation Code, so as to remain consistent with other units at the ballpark.

The purchase of a new Trane HVAC unit will be paid to YMI, using monies in the city’s ballpark capital account.

City officials said a budget adjustment will be necessary, as the purchase was not expected when the annual budget was approved.

May Street water main

work Also during the meeting, city officials awarded a $349,623 contract to Austin Tyler Construction for water main improvements on May Street.

The city said a section of the street’s water main was selected for improvements due to high failure rates.

After receiving nine sealed bids for the project, a contract was awarded to the low bidder, Austin

Tyler Construction. Gerardi Sewer and Water did not supply the city with their current prequalification prior to the bid opening, prompting officials not to read the bids.

The project will be paid for using the water and sewer improvement fund.

Cleaning Hickory, Spring creeks The city approved a $59,000

contract to Gregg W. Dobczyk Excavating for regular cleaning and maintenance of Hickory Creek and Spring Creek.

According to the city, the cleaning and maintenance work allows the two water channels to maintain proper flow.

Officials received three sealed bids for the project, with Gregg W. Dobczyk Excavating providing the lowest bid.

The project will use money from the general fund.

Lawmakers hold meeting to discuss state of state Some organizations will receive 65 percent of funding they were owed for fiscal year 2015

After much debate in Springfield, the state passed a six-month stopgap budget in late June. Last week, legislators talked about the implications of that spending bill at the local level during a town hall meeting at Joliet Public Library Black Road branch.

Among those updating the crowd in attendance for the meeting were Gov. Pat McGuire, D-Crest Hill, Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, and Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet.

McGuire noted the length at which legislators worked to come to an agreement in the spring, after what happened in fiscal year 16.

He said a lot of moving parts played a role in how the state ended up with a six-month stopgap budget for the fiscal year, which began July 1.

“While the governor of course has non-budgetary demands—his turnaround agenda—and that’s one reason why the leaders did not agree on this full year FY 17 budget, we got the six-month budget, which is better than nothing, but is a mess,” McGuire said.

Between conducting research, networking and reviewing proposals, state legislators intend to find a way to modernize the tax system and create new revenue sources. McGuire said Illinois has the “most narrow sales-tax base in the country.”

Higher education Among programs not receiving funding in the coming year are financial aid funds for low and moderate-income students.

McGuire, who serves as chair for the higher education committee, said students with the greatest need for financial aid won’t the receive assistance they otherwise would’ve been offered to enter the doors of the nine public universities, set to open in the fall.

Social services In the case of social services, McGuire said these organizations will receive 65 percent of the funding they were owed for fiscal year 2015, which is the last year the state approved a budget, to cover 18 months.

McGuire noted the many challenges these agencies have faced to this point. He said it’s unfortunate.

“They’ve got to stretch that over all of FY 16 and the first six months of FY 17—which we’re in now—that’s July through the end of December,” he said.

K-12 education For the last 10 years, K-12 education is one area that’s seen a decrease in funding, as well.

Bertino-Tarrant said locals can rest assured their local property tax contributions won’t have been for nothing.

“The one budget that was passed for the full year was our education

funding,” she said. “Obviously, as we know, school has to open yearround. To come halfway point and to close school didn’t seem like a viable solution that any legislator would want to have to vote on. We did fully fund education and in addition we added more money to education.”

Bertino-Tarrant emphasized that their property tax dollars will continue to remain local, even as the funding situation in Chicago Public Schools continues to develop.

She said the stopgap budget doesn’t create the ideal situation, but it is hoped to provide some relief in thinking big picture.

“It doesn’t sound very fair when we talk about our social services getting 65 percent,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “We understand that. We know the 65 percent is not an ideal solution, but if there’s one thing that legislators all agree on is that we need to open our schools on time and fully fund our kids’ education.”

Over the next year, lawmakers will be examining the equity piece that stems from funding K-12 education.

Bertino-Tarrant said it is important as lawmakers move forward they look at how state tax rates differ across the various regions of the state, to level the playing field.

“Sometimes we find that some of the more affluent communities keep their tax rate,” she said. “They have a great property value, [they have a] great property tax-rate base, they keep their rate more...Whereas there are some school areas that it’s a very poor area. No matter how

high their tax rate is they’re never going to be able to equal out what other communities can get.”

Pension reform One attendee raised a concern that locals might see a cost shift come to fruition after getting full K-12 funding.

Bertino-Tarrant said cost shifting always appears to be an idea that is “dangling,” but it’s not in the state’s plan.

“For us in the suburbs, a cost shift is a very scary topic,” she said.

Bertino-Tarrant noted the way in which cost of living differs in the various regions of the state. She said while there are those downstate who might support the measure, others would work to counter that action.

“I do believe we have a block of suburban legislators who know an immediate cost shift, at this point, will just fall on our taxpayers,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

Manley noted the way in which Gov. Bruce Rauner pushed for smoothing, an accounting method that lowers taxes when they’re high and raises them when they’re low, to address the state’s pension pickup issue. As a certified public accountant,, she said that idea doesn’t rest well with her.

“I do not agree that we should do a smoothing,” Manley said. “I think this problem is just going to perpetuate and go forward. But, I’m willing to do it because I’ve got a lot of constituents that need state services and all that was being hung over our heads.”

Fun, educational activities planned for Kidzfest Kidzfest will be held from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m.

Aug. 6 on Chicago Street in downtown Joliet Activities for children of all ages will be featured at Lewis University’s mini-campus in downtown Joliet during Kidzfest 2016.

The free family festival offers an opportunity for area children to play, explore, imagine and create.

Kidzfest will be held from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. Aug. 6 on Chicago Street in downtown Joliet.

Lewis University is the main sponsor for Kidzfest 2016, which will include attractions such as the Friendly Farms Petting Zoo, a juggler, and activities and exhibits by other area organizations, including the Joliet Public Library, Rialto Square Theatre, Forest Preserve District of Will County and the Joliet Slammers. Activities are free.

Each child may receive a certificate as he/she enters the Lewis University Kidzfest minicampus across from the Rialto Square Theatre. The children earn marks on the certificate for each activity that they attend. Those who earn four marks on the certificate will receive an “aviator wings pin.”

Children will have the opportunity to sit in a small airplane and have a free digital photo taken courtesy

of Lewis University; test their skills on an unmanned aircraft system simulator with direction from flight students; get free photo IDs taken by students in the Criminal-Social Justice program and the Lewis University Police Department; make an art project with supplies and guidance from the Art & Design Department; solve math problems and play computer games with the Computer and Mathematical Sciences Department; and see a mastodon tooth and other small fossils, and tackle trivia questions from geologist Greg Kientop.

Other activities will allow children to become scientists through chemistry and biology experiments, or step into the shoes of a weather reporter and see what it’s like to be on TV using equipment and assistance from the communications department.

Attendees can improve their athletic skills with tips from student athletes on sports such as men’s and women’s basketball and golf, as well as test their fitness skills against a member of the ROTC. Additionally, children and adults can get blood pressure and pulse

screenings from students and nurses in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Adults can also receive information on hypertension and diabetes awareness. Several wellness games will focus on nutrition, stress reduction, hand washing, exercise and smoking habits.

Student performers from the Lewis Philip Lynch Theatre will sing songs from Disney musical favorites at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the outdoor stage at Clinton and Chicago streets.

Authority and Will County. Will County Transportation Department mobility manager Wendie Garlich said the lack of options with respect to transportation in the eastern portion of the county doesn’t help.

Like other members of the panel, Garlich said the stigma surrounding bus ridership is another area of concern that requires their attention.

Garlich said that if there are seniors or disabled persons who are Medicaid or Medicare eligible, there are transportation providers who are

available to serve them at no cost.

Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living Center community organizer Sam Knight said the ins and outs of the county transportation system need to be communicated to residents more consistently, so as to eliminate the public’s confusion.

“It has so many levels to it,” he said. “There needs to be education in the community but also to us as providers when things change.”

Senior Services Center of Will County Executive Director Barry Kolanowski said he and other experts on the panel hope to resolve the challenges faced in the region and remain to making Will County a livable community for all.

“We recognize a transportation solution is going to have to be multifaceted,” he said.

‘The prevalence of hearing loss almost doubles with each age decade of life’

Nearly two-thirds of adults over age 70 have hearing loss that doctors consider “clinically meaningful.” I n plain English that means as people age, they are likely to become hard of hearing. Many of those people, however, don’t get the help they need, often because they simply cannot afford it.

“The prevalence of hearing loss almost doubles with each age decade of life,” says Dr. Frank Lin, an otolaryngologist at Johns Hopkins University, but for older people, he adds, “there are multiple barriers that prevent individuals from getting their hearing loss addressed.”

Lin spoke about the subject to a group of journalists in a recent phone conference sponsored by a Washington, D.C., advocacy group the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

He is a co-author of a June report issued by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that recommends better access and support for treating hearing loss.

Lin told the group that although hearing loss is a normal part of the aging process, “hearing care is inaccessible” to many seniors.

He said studies over the last five years have shown that such loss “can increase the risk of cognitive decline.”

Using data from a longitudinal study (one that tracks data from the same people repeatedly over many years or decades) that began in 1958, Lin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins found that those with hearing loss had a higher probability of developing dementia.

The more severe the loss, the more likely the dementia.

That isn’t the only problem.

Hearing loss is also associated with a greater risk for falls and other accidents because a person can’t hear traffic or a smoke alarm in their home.

often feel isolated and shun normal social contacts because they can’t hear others speak.

That’s a blow to productive aging, the goal promoted by the late Dr. Robert Butler, a well-known gerontologist who fought against ageism.

So why, then, is hearing care so inaccessible?

Cost may be the major barrier.

Nearly all expenses for hearing care must be paid out-of-pocket, and for many seniors on fixed incomes, that’s sometimes hard to do.

Lin told me the average cost of two hearing aids is $4,700 and rarely covered by insurance.

Medicare doesn’t cover hearing exams, hearing aids, or exams for fitting hearing aids.

It does, however, cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams but only if your doctor orders those tests to see if you need medical treatment.

In that case, if a person has traditional Medicare and a Medicare supplement policy, often called a Medigap, he or she has to pay 20 percent of the approved amount for the exam. Some Medicare Advantage plans may include hearings tests as part of the extra benefits they offer.

The National Committee and other advocacy groups are campaigning to add a hearing benefit to Medicare’s benefit package.

Their campaign is bucking the trend in Washington to cut Medicare benefits

by raising the age of eligibility, making richer seniors pay more, and requiring those with traditional Medigaps to have more skin in the game.

Politicians have already begun redesigning Medigap policies to make seniors pay more out of pocket for their care.

Beginning in 2020, for example, insurers will not be allowed to sell Medigap policies that cover the deductibles for Medicare Part B that pays for physicians’ services, lab tests and hospital outpatient care.

The theory behind this shift is that seniors will pay more and the government less thus helping to save Medicare money.

I asked Dan Adcock, the National Committee’s policy director, about the chances of adding benefits to treat hearing loss, or for that matter vision and dental care, when the focus has been on cutting benefits of all kinds.

He said one major source of funds to pay for hearing aids could come from lowering the price of what Medicare pays for drugs.

The 2003 legislation that gave seniors a drug benefit also prohibited the government from negotiating prices for the drugs it buys. Drug makers strongly oppose such negotiations.

Adcock said he remains hopeful.

If better hearing means a decrease in dementia, falls and accidents, fewer people would need treatment for those conditions. The savings could potentially “pay” for the hearing aids, he said.

For now, though, seniors and their families are on their own.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine offer an Action Guide for Individuals and Families that suggests actions people can take to prevent hearing loss and strategies for families to cope with it when it occurs. It’s available at www. nas.edu/hearing.

For a few years I had wanted to play The General at Eagle Ride Resort and Spa in Galena. It is safe to say I was not disappointed.

Just looking out at the first hole from the clubhouse I was excited with what was in store.

My favorite courses are ones with great elevation changes and scenery and this no doubt fit the bill.

The first hole started with a sharp elevation change, a drop from the tee box to the fairway, allowing the hole to play much shorter than the 378-yard gold tees, which are the three-star ratings out of four. It would be the best hole at many golf courses, but here, it was just one of the better ones.

Next was a 528-yard par-5, which played mostly straight but played to a tight fairway all the way to the green. The third hole is a 143-yard downhill par-3 with

water to the right and bunkers to the front and left, making it a much harder hole than the scorecard suggests.

A short fourth hole at 354 yards is a slight dogleg left, with bunkers guarding a straight shot to the right side of the fairway.

That is followed by the hardest hole on the front nine, a 418-yard par-4. It is a dogleg left with trees lining the dogleg on the left and a tree that can get in the way of an approach shot to the right. There is a gully below the tree, meaning balls that hit the tree could be in big trouble.

The sixth hole is a dogleg right par-5 at 479 yards, with water guarding the dogleg. Long and brave hitters may be able to cut off the dogleg a bit to make the green reachable in two.

A slightly uphill par-3 seventh hole is just 130 yards, but has trouble all around it in long, thick grass.

Miller wins 22nd Illinois Women’s Open

Stephanie Miller was near perfect last week as she claimed the title at the 22nd annual Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville.

The University of Illinois senior to be tallied 43 straight bogey free holes before collecting a bogey on No. 17 on the final day, wrapped up her first tournament win since 2013.

“I guess I couldn’t be perfect all day,” Miller joked. “But I did get away with a lot. On 13, I hit it way right into the high grass and found it, thankfully. Then popped it out in front of the green and made an up and down and got away with that, so I was happy with the par there. I just tried to play well coming in, but I got a little excited on the par-three, but that’s all right. I was just thinking about one shot at a time.”

The two-time IHSA Class AA champion while at Stevenson fired three rounds of 69 to finish with a 9-under par 207, three shots better than Indiana resident Kelly Grassel, who also ended her tournament with 38 bogey free holes.

“This week was a great experience,” Grassel said. “I was pretty consistent. This course has some tricky holes, but it’s not too long and the greens were holding, so it was very scorable this week.

I’m definitely happy with the string of no bogeys. I missed a few greens but was able to get up and down, so I was happy about that.

“This was an encouraging week for my game. I started making a few improvements and was hitting it a little bit farther, so to see that out on the course was encouraging, however there was a time when I was hitting further than I usually did and I wasn’t sure which club to play.”

Miller also battled with her playing partner, Brooke Ferrell, who was tied for the lead after both the first and second round.

Ferrell was only one shot behind Miller heading into the stretch run, but a nine on No. 15 dashed her hopes of winning this year after finishing second last year.

“Brooke was a great partner and is so nice, and her game is awesome,” Miller said. “She hit some great shots, and at the beginning, we were neck and

general | from page 9 The eighth hole is a 306-yard dogleg right par-4 with a treelined to the right of the dogleg. A safe play out to the left makes the hole much longer, while a gutsy play to the right of the fairway can lead to a short wedge into the green, which is guarded by a stone wall behind the green, adding to the character.

The front nine finishes with a 390-yard par-4, which is uphill and plays longer than the distance. It also takes a good hit to get it to the fairway over some unplayable grass and a long approach shot is played to a green covered by a bunker.

The back nine starts with a 361yard par-4, which doglegs right.

Both sides of the fairway are lined with trees. No. 11 is a large drop par-3 at 152 yards. It plays much less than that due to the sharp drop from the tee to the green.

Next is a 466-yard par-5, which is reachable in two. However, it is tight and there is plenty of trouble around it to keep it from being easy. That is followed by a 423yard par-4 that doglegs right and is lined with trees. It is rated the most difficult hole on the course.

The best hole on the course, in my opinion, is next. A par4, 341-yard hole that is straight downhill. It is such a deep drop that the green is nearly reachable off the tee. From the tee you can also see some great scenery off in the distance from the course and beyond. It is truly a much-see hole.

The 15th hole is 170 yards that has a bunker in front of it. That is followed by a 380-yard hole that doglegs left and plays uphill to the green.

The closing holes feature a tight, 361-yard hole and a 500yard par-5 with split fairways to land your second shot.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the course were the slow greens. Typically at a course like this the greens are lightning quick, but this wasn’t the case.

However, there were many slopes on both the greens and fairways that made things difficult, helping to contribute to a 136 slope from the gold tees.

Prime weekday fees are $135, so you will want to be sure to let the views sink in. In the evenings the rates can get down to $60, which

We played in the late afternoon and only saw one group the entire time. When the sun came out on the back nine the course felt as peaceful and beautiful as any course I have ever played. There

was even a hot air ballon which flew over us on the 18th hole as the sun was beginning to set, adding to the aura.

This course is a must play for all levels of golf fans. It isn’t quite as hard as anticipated, so even the

novice can come out and enjoy his or her round. It is definitely worth full price to take a yearly trip out there. I imagine fall rates would be cheaper and I can only imagine how great it would be to play the course in the fall.

Slammers drop rain-shortened 2-game series The Slammers’ attempt at a comeback came too late as they lost their second straight game to the Southern Illinois Miners Wednesday night. The Joliet Slammers scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but it was not enough as they fell to the Miners 8-7, July 20.

It was “Turn the Ballpark Blue” night at Silver Cross Field, and the Slammers were almost able to send the fans away in exciting

fashion.

Joliet rallied in the ninth as they started the inning trailing 8-1.

Jake Gronsky brought in a pair of runs on a single and an error by shortstop Francisco Rosario. Joe Staley drove in a run in the ninth, and was the only Slammer to drive in a run before the eighth inning.

The Miners’ starting pitcher Dyllon Nuernberg shut down the Slammers’ offense. After Staley’s RBI single in the second, he retired

18 consecutive batters.

“He mixed stuff up pretty good,” Staley said. “He had a curveball and a cutter. We weren’t hot. He shouldn’t have done what he did.

We weren’t on tonight.”

While Nuernberg was on Wednesday night, the Slammers’ starting pitcher Kaleb Ort struggled to locate and it came back to bite the Slammers.

One pitch in the third inning changed the course of the game combined with the Slammers inability to score runs early in the game led to their loss. The Slammers did not have a base runner until Sikes Orvis drew a walk in the eighth inning.

“He wasn’t locating,” the Slammers’ catcher Staley said. “He put some guys on base, missed some spots. Bases loaded, (Nolan Earley) was hitting dead-red. We threw it down the middle and missed a little bit of a spot there and her ran into it.”

With runners on second and third with two outs in the third inning, Ort intentionally walked Alex De Leon to face Earley, and one pitch later it was 5-1. The

Miners hit another key home run in the ninth inning to give them the extra run they needed to win the game.

Kurt Wertz Jr. took Marc Rutledge’s 0-2 pitch deep to right field to give the Miners an 8-1 lead.

Although Ort struggled to locate in his 3.1 innings of work, Tyler Levine and Brent Choban kept the Slammers in the game in the long run. Levine and Choban combined to pitch 4.2 scoreless innings.

The Slammers’ late-game rally shows that they are able to handle the first-place Miners, and with a few improvements at the plate and on the mound, they can find a way to win, Staley said.

“Mentally we haven’t been playing to the level that we did earlier in the season,” Staley said. “It shows that they’re not untouchable, Southern Illinois.

They’ve got a great record and they’re winning ballgames, but honestly they don’t intimidate me at the plate.”

The Miners have had one big inning in each of first two games of the series.

“They’ve had some big innings here and there, but it’s nothing that we cant’ handle,” Staley said.

“Our pitching staff needs to come through and throw strikes. We’re walking a lot of guys.”

The opening game of the series was a battle of first place teams, the Slammers matched the Southern Illinois Miners hit for hit almost the whole way, but could not find a way to win. The Miners came out on top 9-1 Tuesday, July 19.

The Slammers’ loss was not a matter of not hitting the ball, it was a matter of the Miners capitalizing with runners on base and getting more runners on base.

The Miners’ starting pitcher Rick Teasley did give up nine hits and walked only one batter.

Alfredo Rodriguez and Melvin Rodriguez each had a pair of hits for the Slammers Tuesday and were left on base both times each. Casey Fletcher drove in the Slammers’ only run until the ninth inning when Phil Bates drove in Jake Gronsky on a sacrifice fly.

“Teasley is one of the better pitchers in this league. He was changing speeds and they got out to a lead and it’s very tough to comeback off a guy like that, who’s pounding the zone, not really walking people and he has a very good changeup.”

Alfredo added as a team, they have to honor what Teasley was able to do and tip their cap to him.

The Miners showed why they have the best record in the Frontier League, even going against the Slammers who have the secondbest record in the league. Southern Illinois put pressure on starting pitcher Shane Bryant right off the bat. They put up six runs on Bryant in 4.2 innings pitched.

Although the Slammers were only outhit 11-9 in the game, Southern Illinois’ patience at the plate early in the game helped them be successful. The Slammers were able to draw four walks off the Miners’ relief pitchers, including three in the ninth inning.

“The more guys you get on base, you put yourself in better position to score,” Alfredo said. “They were able to capitalize today and hopefully we can learn from that tonight and come back tomorrow.

Southern Illinois improved its record to 38-17 after the win over the Slammers, and the Slammers’ record drops to 30-25. With the Washington Wild Things off on

The Slammers trailed up until the seventh inning, where they were able to take a one-run lead, but Florence ran away with the game in the eighth when they scored five times to take a 10-6 lead.

Joliet rallied back in the ninth inning Saturday night to come back and beat the Freedom in 10 innings. The Slammers took game one of the series by a score of 163.

Florence took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning

after scoring three times, but the Slammers answered with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to get the game tied. Joliet scored another run in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but that is all they would get Sunday.

Carter Bell added to his RBI lead the Frontier League with a solo home run in the sixth.

Sikes Orvis brought in two more runs on a two-run double. Jake Gronsky gave the Slammers their temporary lead in the seventh by hitting into a double play with the bases loaded.

Spencer Medick got the start on the mound for the Slammers Sunday. He came in with a 5-1 record and a 4.42 ERA, but he was charged with four earned runs.

Joliet tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, so Medick escaped with a no-decision, and relief pitcher Brent Choban was charged with the loss.

Simmons replaced Brent Choban, who was pitching in relief, in the eighth inning with the bases loaded. Taylor Oldham hit a ball off the right field wall, clearing the bases. Melvin Rodriguez crashed hard into the wall trying to make the play and was taken out of the game.

Two of the three runs on the play were charged to Choban.

The Freedom took a 9-6 lead on the play and added one more run later in the inning to give them a four run lead.

Stay the course Adequately cover family needs, then you can always drop the insurance policies Dear Dave, Our daughter is a special needs child, who doctors say will live about half as long as the average adult. There’s also a good chance she will be under our care her entire life.

We just finished Baby Step 3 of your plan, so we have all of our debt paid off except for the house, and we have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses saved. We have health insurance, too. However, we were wondering how the situation with our little girl affects retirement planning and college funding?

Jonathan Dear Jonathan, I know this may sound strange, but the situation with your daughter really doesn’t affect things all that much. The only real difference is that it sounds like you’ll be responsible for your sweet daughter for the foreseeable future — not just until she’s 18 or 21.

If you don’t already have it, you and your wife should both buy 10 to 12 times your annual incomes in term life insurance. Make sure the money from the policies is set up to go into a special needs trust that would be managed for her care. That way, your baby will be taken care of in the event something unexpected happens to you.

Otherwise, just keep following my plan. Baby Step 4 means you start putting 15 percent of your income into pre-tax retirement plans, like Roth IRAs and mutual funds. Baby Step 5 is college funding, if that’s a consideration for her, followed by paying off your home early. Then, of course, the last Baby Step is building wealth and giving.

Financially speaking, you’re looking at filling a need in the event of your deaths. This should be covered by life insurance or investments. If you reach a point where your investments are substantial, and money from those things can adequately cover her needs and the needs of your family, then you can always drop the insurance policies.

Time to raise prices?

Dear Dave, My husband has his own oneman painting business, and I help him with the books. We were wondering how you know when it’s time to implement a price increase.

Also, what should the increase be?

Lauren Dear Lauren, I grew up in the real estate business, so I’ll use the apartmentcomplex model as my example. If your building is completely full, then it’s time to raise prices a little bit until you have a vacancy. In this type of scenario, you want a healthy level of vacancy, meaning you’re always going to be losing some customers as you go up in prices.

In your husband’s case, if he’s booked through the end of the month, he’s way underpriced. Just keep on turning in your bids, and don’t make a big deal about things.

It isn’t like a tenant, in your case, where you’re going back time and time again except in rare cases.

You might start with a 10 percent increase, and see what happens for a while. If that goes well, wait a bit and raise them another 10 percent.

There are only so many hours in a day this guy can work, so the only other option is to take on staff. But before I start staffing, I’m going to raise prices and cut the number of customers that way. In most cases with the construction business, if you show up when you say you will, complete the job when you say you will, and you do high quality work, there’s almost no ceiling on what you can make!

St. Joseph Academy presents ‘Summer in the Tree’ Admission includes entertainment, light refreshments and a chance to win prize Musicians, comedians, artists and craftsmen will gather in “The Treehouse” at the Tree of Joliet Performing Arts Center July 30 for St. Joseph Academy’s Summer in the Tree performance.

Young performers from the St. Joseph Academy Players will kick off the afternoon with songs and comedy skits. Current and former students make up the SJA Players.

The Joliet Drama Guild will then perform a preview of the musical “Grease,” which opens on Aug. 5 at Bicentennial Park.

Featured singers scheduled to perform include two Rialto Idol winners. The 2014 Idol winner and recent Joliet West graduate, Alexis Rae Smith, and 2013 winner Larry Crawford will each perform some of their favorite solo numbers.

Lost Vinyls and Deleterious, two local teen rock bands who are making names for themselves in the community, will also take the stage.

A karaoke session is also scheduled, giving other local singers the opportunity to take their turn at the microphone.

Second City comedian Kimberly Garrett will also share some of her true-to-life stories, and singerguitarists Tamara Martinez and Larry Huff will entertain the late night crowd. Concluding the evening will be an open jam; during which time musicians will be invited to bring out their instruments and join the fun.

Additionally, artists and craftsmen will display their work and several of their creations will be available for purchase.

Guests may also take a chance at winning some original art pieces, as well as other prizes and gift certificates.

Admission to Summer in the Tree is $10 for adults, and $5 for elementary and high school students.

Admission includes entertainment, light refreshments and a chance to win a door prize.

Beverages and food from The Treehouse will be available for purchase.

Summer in the Tree is scheduled for July 30 from 2 to 11 p.m. at the Tree of Joliet Performing Arts Center, 22 W. Cass St.
