Several serious incidents in Joliet over holiday weekend Joliet first responders were kept busy with many serious, yet unrelated incidents

@BugleNewspapers bstanley@buglenewspapers.com Joliet Police were kept busy with several unrelated, though serious incidents over the Fourth of July holiday.

The first occurred about 6:05 a.m.

July 3 when officers were called to a public housing complex at 358 North Broadway where Joshua C. Shelton, 30, was banging on the door of an apartment and trying to retrieve his belongings from a resident, reports said.

Security guards responded but when the door opened again, Shelton allegedly pushed past them towards the woman inside.

“A struggle ensued and at one point Shelton grabbed a knife and cut a security officer in the elbow,” police said.

The security officer was treated by paramedics at the scene and Shelton, of the 200 block of Illinois Street, was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated battery, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

At 12:07 p.m. July 4, a man called police to the 500 block of North Chicago Street claiming he was attacked by a man with a socket wrench.

The victim said Matthew H. Rice, 36, believed he had stolen marijuana from Rice and an argument ensued, police said.

“At one point during the argument, Riced took a socket wrench and struck the windshield of the victim’s vehicle, causing damage. Rice then struck the victim on the arms and head with the socket wrench,” police said.

by Joliet Fire paramedics. About 6 p.m. police were informed Rice had come to Saint Joseph Medical Center seeking treatment for a cut to his hand. Police believe Rice received the injury during the beating.

Rice, of the 200 block of North Canyon Drive in Bolingbrook, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and criminal damage to property.

About 12:25 a.m. July 5 police were called to a domestic disturbance in the 900 block of Gael Drive. While officers were en route, 911 dispatchers reportedly heard shots being fired.

Several people came out while police surrounded the house, but John H. Howard, 41, refused to come out, according to reports.

Howard began speaking with officers through an open window and initially denied anyone else was inside but later allowed some children to leave, police said.

During the standoff, Howard stepped out of the house several times “either holding a corn on the cob or a plant as if they were weapons and pointed it at officers telling the officers to shoot him,” police said.

The next time Howard stepped outside, one officer used his taser to incapacitate him.

Police reportedly found a loaded gun and ammunition inside the house along with spent shell casings and bullets.

“Officers were able to determine that Howard initially became upset over an argument about fireworks,” police said.

Police say a Naperville man wrecked a fire hydrant before exposing himself to bystanders.

Phillip D. Kruse, 41, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, assault and disorderly conduct following the July 3 incident.

Sgt. Chris Botzum said Kruse was driving a red BMW when he struck the hydrant at 8:47 p.m. at Cumberland and Bitterroot drives.

“Kruse got out of his vehicle with a bottle of alcohol in his hand and began to walk away,” police said.

When witnesses told Kruse to remain at the scene, he reportedly yelled at them and began to approach them “in an aggressive manner.” Kruse then threw his car keys at the witnesses, began to walk away again then “turned around and exposed himself,” police said.

Kruse then reportedly ran from the scene, but was found by police in a backyard of the 1700 block of Mystic Drive - about a block away. Kruse allegedly failed some parts of his field sobriety tests and refused to take others.

Kruse, of the 300 block of Tanoak Lane, was booked into the Will County jail and also received several traffic citations.

A Costco is slated to anchor the 170-acre commercial project which will occupy the border between the towns along the northwestern edge of Route 30 and Interstate 55.

Earlier this month, Plainfield trustees unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with Joliet that will be necessary for the development.

A Clark Auto-Truck stop and 24hour restaurant operated there for many years before closing in the late 90’s or early 2000’s.

The Plainfield Fire Department was allowed to destroy some structures for training but other buildings remain standing.

Plainfield and Joliet began talking about an intergovernmental agreement in 2007.

Boulevard, 10 are in Joliet - a 48,000 square-foot on its own toward the east and a cluster of buildings between 4,000 and 16,000 square-feet near the center.

Costco’s 152,000 square-foot building close to I-55 would be located in Plainfield, but all of their parking lot would be in seven acres of Joliet.

Under the agreement, Joliet and Plainfield would need the other’s approval for land use projects outside

the existing zoning districts. Each town is responsible for development in their border but must share plans and allow suggestions from the other.

Plainfield will provide water, sanitary sewer and stormwater sewer to the project and collect all tap-on fees. Replacing Joliet’s existing sewer and water to the site with the sizes needed would require going under the interstate and be cost-prohibitive, according to Melrose.

GLVC sponsors bowling along with lacrosse beginning this season

A day after revealing women’s lacrosse as its 23rd sponsored sport, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Wednesday it will begin sponsoring women’s bowling as its 24th sport for the upcoming year.

The inaugural season of GLVC women’s bowling will feature seven institutions, including full-time league members Drury University, Lewis University, Maryville University and McKendree University, as well as associate members University of Central Missouri, Lincoln University and Upper Iowa University.

Five of the seven aforementioned programs – Central Missouri, Drury, Lincoln, Maryville and McKendree – competed under the banner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) over the course of the last three seasons.

McKendree has reached the final match of the Intercollegiate Team Championship in each of

the past three seasons. Under the direction of head coach Shannon O’Keefe, the Bearcats earned the national title in 2017, scored a runner-up finish in 2018, and was edged 3-2 in the 2019 title match

by Robert Morris University (Ill.) this past April. One month prior to nationals, McKendree swept Central Missouri 4-0 to claim its second consecutive MIAA Championship.

It was a successful first sea-

son for the Lewis Flyers as they finished the 2018-19 campaign ranked No. 37 in the NCAA RPI, brought home two runner-up trophies from NCAA tournaments and made match play at a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) tournament.

Larry Hughes has served as the head coach at Drury for all four

years of the program history, including the last three under the NCAA banner. He guided the Panthers to third place at the MIAA Championships in 2017, followed by a pair of fourth-place results the past two seasons. Drury will compete in the GLVC’s inaugural season in memory of teammate Caroline Conrad, who tragically passed away in an auto accident last week.

All seven programs will advance

to the inaugural GLVC Bowling Championship, which will take place at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville, Illinois, March 21-22, 2020.

The honors continue to come in for University of St. Francis softball player Ashley Galason (Burbank, Ill./Reavis), who was recently named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America College Division Softball Second Team.

That comes on top of earlier recognition as both a first-team Google Cloud Academic All-District and all-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference selection, a NAIA Scholar-Athlete and most recently as a NAIA Honorable Mention All-America choice.

Galason, who graduated this past May with magna cum laude honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in finance, saved her best for last with career-high numbers in eight offensive categories.

The most significant increases came in batting average and slugging percentage as well as her RBI and double totals.

Galason finished with a .750 slugging percentage, or 316 points higher than her previous top mark, courtesy of doubling her previous best in two-base hits from 8 to 16.

She also hit .450 (previous-best .331) with 45 runs batted in, topping her 31 during her sophomore campaign.

Galason also collected 54 hits, including six home runs, and came around to score 37 times.

On a national level, Galason ranked among the top 21 players in three categories, placing 20th in runs batted in per game (1.13) and 21st in both doubles per game (0.40) and slugging percentage (.750).

Galason appeared in all 188 of the Saints’ games over her fouryear career, starting all but one contest.

During that time, she totaled 191 hits and 109 runs batted in and authored a .341 batting average.

Egan, a junior outfielder, ranked among the top 25 players in the nation in no fewer than five categories topped by her No. 3 billing in hits per game with 1.8 per contest.

She also finished sixth in total triples (8), seventh in triples per game (0.2), 15th in batting average (.486) and 25th in total bases per game (2.38).

In total hits, she ranked 44th with 72.

A starter in all 40 games for the Saints this season, Egan closed out the year riding a 21-game hitting streak and hit safely in 38 of 40 games overall.

She also produced 22 multi-hit contests and led the team in stolen bases with eight.

Besides the NAIA All-America honor, Egan was also a first-team all-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference selection, where she

led the league in hitting.

Galason also ranked among the nation’s best players, earning Top 25 billings in three statistical areas and another three among the top 50.

Her top spot came in runs batted in per game (1.13), where she ranked 20th.

She was 21st in both doubles per game (0.40) and slugging percentage (.750).

Other high rankings included her .450 batting average (No. 34), 2.25 total bases per game (No. 36) and 16 total doubles (No. 50).

Like Egan, Galason started all 40 of the Saints’ contests this past spring en route to setting career highs in nearly every offensive statistical category.

The senior infielder also produced 18 multi-hit games.

Galason also appeared on the list of first-team all-conference selections and was a first-team CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District selection.

USF went 29-11 overall this past spring, including 17-5 in conference play to finish second in the league.

Help friend with what he needs, not wants

Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you ve got to look at the big picture in these situations Q. I’m on Baby Step 2 of your plan, and I’ll be debt-free except for my home by the end of the year. I have a friend who is very irresponsible with his money, and he often asks to “borrow” cash between paychecks. I don’t want to be cruel, but things are getting out of hand with his requests for money.

A. I think you should tell your friend the truth. Let him know you’ve decided to get control of your money, you’re trying to get out of debt and you simply don’t have cash to spare. Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the big picture in these situations. You’re not really helping someone if you participate in their misbehavior and enable bad habits.

Sometimes, you have to love someone enough to tell them no.

Let your friend know how hard you’re working to get your finances in order and how it’s making a big difference in your life. Maybe you could offer to show him the steps you’ve taken

so far, and let him know he could be successful doing this, too. You might even try to show him how to make a monthly budget and act as his guide and accountability partner if he’s willing to accept this kind of help.

In some cases, helping someone means offering what you know they need instead of what they want. But you’re never really helping someone who’s incompetent with money by simply handing them cash.

Q. My wife and I are both 46, and we have two teenagers in middle school.

We were told recently that now is the perfect time for us to buy long-term care insurance. How do you feel about this in our situation?

A. No, now is not the perfect time for you guys to buy long-term care insurance. Research shows there’s about a 1% chance of folks your age needing long-term care insurance, and I generally don’t recommend insuring against things that have such

Boost speed and endurace for cross country Cross country is a popular sport. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ annual High School Athletics Participation Survey, cross country was the third-fastest growing sport for boys in 2016 and is the seventh most popular sport among girls.

In a cross country competition, teams and individuals run a race on an open-air course over natural terrain. Courses can be between two and 3.1 miles, depending on age groups and school-district guidelines.

Cross country is an endurance sport, although speed also benefits cross-country runners. Cross-country runners typically devote considerable effort to improving their endurance and speed, and the following are some popular strategies aimed at doing just that.

• Engage in plyometric workouts. Running is about breath control and cardiovascular health, but a person also will need strong legs, says the fitness company REI. Athletes can build leg strength with box jumps, burpees, weight training, jumping rope, and more.

• Gradually add mileage to workouts.

Runners should start off with a distance

they can handle, and then incrementally add more miles, offers the health resource Livestrong.

• Run at different paces. Change the pace of runs, alternating between sprinting and recovery, to acclimate your body to running at various speeds. Work to improve your ability to keep up at faster speeds for lengthy periods of time. Many athletes like to use a fitness watch to track their heart rates and see how they can maximize time spent between easy, tempo and speed run paces.

• Vary the course. Cross country meets may take place in parks, at schools or on wilderness trails. An ability to maintain a consistent, quick pace on various types of terrain can be an asset. That means running up and down hills, around curves and not just on flat surfaces.

• Use an app to build endurance. Many different running apps can help athletes design workouts that will help them improve their pacing and endurance. Such apps include iSmoothRun and Runtastic.

• Run with a buddy. Some lighthearted competition can help improve both runners, who may push each other to keep up.

Cross country running is a popular sport, and runners who take steps to improve their endurance and speed can make even more out of this enjoyable activity.
