The Joliet City Center Partnership, in conjunction with Safe Pets for Joliet, Paws Crossed Rescue Resource and Hawk Subaru of Joliet, hosted the inaugural Paws on 66 Pet Rescue Day June 4, in downtown Joliet.

“We actually participated in the city’s Light Up the Holidays Parade, and we were downtown and we saw what an awesome turnout they had,” said Morgan Drdak, an animal welfare advocate of Safe Pets for Joliet. “We got such a great representation there that we said,

‘We want to do an event in downtown Joliet.’ We met up with Joliet City Center Partnership, and they were very excited. They’re the one who really made this happen.”

Highlights at the event included a pet blessing, police K9 demonstration and VIP pet lookalike contest.

“What we really wanted to do was to bring rescues out to a place they’ve never been before— there’s never been a pet event in downtown Jolie,” Drdak said. “It’d be a way to show the downtown area and everything that’s [around here], while also getting some animals in our rescues and our local shelters some exposure and hopefully, getting some adopted.”

Drdak said people appeared to enjoy all the festivities.

feedback,” Drdak said. “People have come specifically looking to adopt dogs, which is really what the event was about. We want to make it a family event that people could bring their pets to and have a great time, because there aren’t too many events like that where you can actually bring your pet.

We also really wanted to showcase our local rescue community, and it seems like we’ve really done that.”

Drdak added that shelters and

rescues had seen a lot of interest shown for their animals.

This year, 24 animal shelters and rescues decided to set up a booth at the event.

“It’s a wonderful event,” said Colleen Collins, president of Perfect Pooches Adoption Agency.

“I’m glad that it’s a great venue, and I’m happy to have a part in the first one and I hope they continue.”

Collins said people have been open to approaching their booth to talk about the Chihuahuas they brought in, which is nice.

“A lot of time Chihuahuas get a bad reputation for being kind of bite-y and snarkey, and it’s fun to see people when they actually meet a Chihuahua that’s nice,” Collins said. “They’re like, ‘Oh, Chihuahuas can be good dogs.’

So, [We] try to change the perception almost like pit bulls have a bad perception. Chihuahuas have equal but different issues.”

BA R BIC Sharon L. Barbic (nee Ryan), 75, a resident of Crest Hill, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2017 at her home while surrounded by her family. She was born March 30, 1942 to the late Lucille (nee Kelly) and Dennis Ryan. Sharon was raised on a farm on Weber and Renwick roads and lived in the area her entire life. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Plainfield.

Sharon graduated in 1960 from St. Francis Academy in Joliet, received an associate’s degree from Joliet Junior College, and worked for the Lockport area Special Education as a tester for their pre-school program. Sharon was active in the St. Mary Immaculate Church Mother’s Club and CCW. A former 4-H leader, she loved flowers and gardening and

spending time with her family at their river house in Wilmington.

Beloved wife of Larry Barbic, whom she married May 20, 1961, loving mother of Susan Minott(Neil) Freeman, Joseph (Kathy) Barbic and the late Mike (Linda) Barbic, adored grandmother of Michael (Kim) Barbic, Madalyn and Grace Barbic; Ryan (Samantha) Minott, Megan Minott and the late Sean Minott; Cal, Max and Laney Barbic, cherished great-grandmother of Mattison Bustamante, dear sister of Kay (the late Walter) Blum and Dennis

Collins said it’s been nice to see people showing interest in adopting a pet.

“We don’t do same-day adoptions, so what I’ve directed them to do is go to the website,” she said. “There’s an application to fill out, and then we also require a home-visit. At an event like this, we don’t do adoptions, but it’s a great lead to get people who are interested to come and see a lot of dogs at once, so they don’t have to waste a lot of time going from place to place.”

Collins added that while Chihuahuas sometimes find themselves staying in rescues longer than other dogs, she’s had good luck with finding new homes for them.

“I think we accomplished our goal for today, which was to help our rescue community and also provide an event that families could bring their whole family to,” Drdak said.

City reminds residents to take precautions to reduce mosquitos Reduce or eliminate the amount of standing water around your home With the arrival of summer weather, the City of Joliet reminds residents to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites and help reduce the number of potential mosquito breeding sites around their home. Residents are encouraged to remove areas of standing water from their property, as it can act as a breeding ground for this insect.

To help control the mosquito population and, most importantly the species responsible for carrying the West Nile Virus, the City has contracted with Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management. The habitat for the species of mosquito that carries the West Nile Virus is in manholes, catch basins, and inlets where standing water can be found. The City of Joliet Mosquito Abatement Program targets all the manholes, catch basins, and inlets to treat with an organic certified extended-release tablet to eradicate these mosquitos. This tablet is effective up to 180 days. The City of Joliet works in conjunction with the Will County Health Department to evaluate and determine when the West Nile Virus is present.

West Nile Virus is a mosquitoborne virus transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people who are infected with the West Nile Virus have no symptoms or experience very mild symptoms 3 to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Mild symptoms in-

clude a fever, headache, and body aches, (occasionally with a skin rash on the trunk of the body), and swollen lymph glands. Less than 1 percent of infected people with West Nile Virus will develop severe symptoms. These symptoms include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, and paralysis. Persons older than 50 years of age and immunocompromised per-sons (e.g. transplant patients) have the highest risk of severe disease.

The best way to prevent West Nile disease, or any other mosquito-borne illness, is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Precautions include: � When outdoors between dusk and dawn, wear shoes and socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. Loose fitting, light colored clothing is best. Consider staying

indoors at dusk and dawn, which is peak mosquito biting time. � Apply insect repellant to exposed skin when outdoors. The most effective repellents contain DEET. Use caution when applying repellant to children. Products containing 10 percent or less DEET are the most appropriate for children from 2 to 12 years of age. Use repellents as directed by the manufacturer. � Install tight-fitting window and door screens. Check for, and repair, any tears in residential screens, including porches and patios. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night. � Reduce or eliminate the amount of standing water around your home. Remove old tires, tin cans, flowerpots and buckets, and change the water in birdbaths at least once a week. Any container holding water for more than four days can become a breeding ground for thousands of mosquitoes.

Joliet-area schools would gain under new school funding formula High-poverty school districts, shortchanged for decades under Illinois’ worst-inthe-nation education funding formula, could see a significant influx of funding to level the playing field with wealthier suburban districts under a landmark school funding reform measure that recently passed in both houses of the legislature.

“Fair funding for K-12 schools would be a huge step forward for Illinois,” said State Sen. Pat McGuire. “There’s been support for this in Will County ever since The Herald-News and I presented standing-room-only town hall meetings on school funding reform in 2004.

Senate Bill 1 means kids would have an equal chance to succeed based on their effort rather than being shortchanged from the start because of their zip code. I urge Gov. Rauner to sign this measure into law as soon as he receives it.”

Senate Bill 1 received support from thousands of school administrators, superintendents, principals, educators, taxpayers and advocates for fair school funding. It would be the first adjustment to the state’s school funding formula in more than 20 years. Currently Illinois labors under a system considered one of the worst in the nation because of its disproportionate reliance on local property wealth.

An analysis of Illinois State Board of Education figures this week by Funding Illinois’ Future – a coalition that advocates for school funding reform – shows potential funding increases for local school districts under Senate Bill 1. Factors

such as a school district’s numbers of students with disabilities, English language learners and low-income students figure into the funding model.

The legislation also provides extra support for the neediest districts and offers property tax relief. Under the legislation, no school district would receive less funding under Senate Bill 1 than they have received under Illinois’ current school funding formula.

An inclusive city moving closer to reality

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST | COLUMN: SPECIAL VOICES I was recently at the Village Hall in Clarendon Hills co-hosting an On The Table event with my friend Diane Compton, of Westmont. The event was an “Inclusive City” discussion with approximately 25 people both with and without disabilities. The Chicago Community Trust, a foundation that for the past 3-years has sponsored civic discussion groups, backed our particular On The Table program; bringing people together to discuss important events and issues in a fun way. Special Olympics also got involved in this On The Table program because it is celebrating Special Olympics’ 50th anniversary next year.

Diane and I were grateful for the opportunity to lead this On The Table discussion. This town hall-style meeting gave those of us in the disability community a place to talk about the need for inclusion in our towns, schools, jobs, and in the media.

Inclusion in our community means exposure for everyone to people with special needs.

“The fact that, whether you’re a regular education or special education teacher, the more you’re exposed to children with special needs you’re going to become more equipped and

confident in your interaction with kids regardless of your certificate,” said Amy McCurry, of Clarendon Hills, and mother to Abbey, a middle school student diagnosed with Down syndrome.

“If Inclusion is successful, they [regular education teachers] are with those kiddos [individuals with special needs] as much as special education teachers.”

Abbey is always told by her mother to not talk solely to her special education teacher or her aide because her mother wants Abbey to talk to all the various teachers during the day.

This example of my friend Abbey’s inclusive education illustrates how those without disabilities can learn how to have a conversation with someone who has special needs. There might still exist people in our community who think that a person with special needs should not be included in regular education classrooms.

Teachers, other professionals, and all residents of our towns must come together to support inclusion of those of us with disabilities, thus creating an inclusive city. In our schools and jobs and also in the media, whether in film, television, radio, or podcast, those of us with disabilities are often not seen, and if we are, we are not always portrayed in a positive light.

Gradually, however, the inclusion of those of us with disabilities is beginning

By Daniel Smrokowski to change for the better. The general public is beginning to see the joy and the whole gamut of human experience on the faces of those who are diagnosed with disabilities.

The Emmy award-winning docuseries, “Born This Way,” is becoming an incredibly powerful platform for advocacy. Beginning three weeks ago, “Born This Way” premiered its third season on the A&E television network, and is showing, through the power of stories, the inclusion of the disability community in our mainstream community.

This television show breaks new ground as being one of the first reality docuseries to feature people with intellectual disabilities. The show centers around seven young adults with Down syndrome as they follow their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic relationships, and work, all while defying society’s expectations of them. VOICES FROM PAGE 4 about the joy and challenges their young adult with Down syndrome brings to their families and communities as a whole. The racially diverse cast includes: Elena, Megan, Steven, Sean, Rachel, Cristina, and John.

“Born This Way” is not just a show about and for adults with Down syndrome. People with any disability and those without can relate to the show. Kris Bomgaars and her daughter, cast member Megan, told me that everyone from medical professionals to legislators to restaurant workers and everyone in-between is watching this show.

“I had someone say to me once ‘I didn’t know I could have a conversation with someone who had Down syndrome’” said Kris Bomgaars. “And oh my gosh, are you kidding me I can’t get her [Megan] to stop having conversations.”

The stories like the ones shown on “Born This Way” or that of my friend Abbey McCurry being included in regular classrooms are why inclusion matters.

Independent living is one of many storylines that viewers see on this current season of “Born This Way.” This past fall, I sat down virtually with Cristina Sanz and her dad Mariano, of Long Beach, Calif. and stars of Born This Way. Cristina and Mariano told me about one of her dreams that she would like viewers to see in season 3. Cristina would like to learn how to live independently in her own apartment.

Within the first few episodes of Season 3, we begin to see Cristina well on her way to accomplishing this skill of independent living.

I had the opportunity to speak with others of this incredible cast of “Born This Way” on my own radio show program, Special Chronicles, and in getting to know this diverse group of young adults with Down syndrome, I feel like we could be great friends.

One of the stars, Steven Clark, was diagnosed with Mosaic Down syndrome, a rare form of Down syndrome that differs from the Down syndrome diagnosis that many of his cast-mates have. In addition to starring on “Born This Way,” Steven is a huge fan of mov-

ies.

He has binders filled with movies he’s seen and wants to see, he plays Challenger baseball, and he hopes to someday try competing in more sports within Special Olympics.

“Not only is it [Born This Way] a docuseries, it’s our lives,” said Steven. “You’ve got to have a narrative, you’ve got to have a story.”

Minooka’s Knudsen, Lockport’s Meyer earn Class 3A state titles

CHARLESTON – No matter the sport, no matter time, winning a triple crown is milestone for any athlete.

That is what Minooka’s Soren Knudsen pulled off Memorial Day weekend at the Class 3A boys state track and field meet in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Last Saturday, the Indian senior won the 3200-meter run in a time of 9 minutes, 3.41 seconds and also claimed the title in the 1600 run in 4:10.51.

Those two, together with his win the cross country finals in the fall, give him the distance triple crown – something that has not been done in the state’s largest class since 2013 when Jack Keelan of St. Ignatius completed the feat.

“I can’t really put it into words,” Knudsen said after the race.

“There was a lot of stress in the last half hour (leading up to the 1600) and I haven’t completely gathered my thoughts. I am usually really

calm and joking around and lacking in the nervousness and I tried to still be like that in the two mile, but it was very nerve wracking.”

While Knudsen ran away from the field in the 3200, the 1600 came down to the wire.

“Illinois is the real deal,” he said.

“Especially in that 800, 1600 and 3200 distance. The two mile, I was extremely confident in. I almost knew I was going to win, but the mile was uncertain. There are a lot of different competitors out here with a lot of different race strategies and they are different kind of runners than I am. In Illinois, you never do know. If we run this race 10 times, I don’t win 10 times and that is what makes this so special.”

Only a rare accomplishment like what Knudsen earned is enough to trump another incredible performance by Lockport junior John Meyer.

Meyer won the Class 3A shot put title with a put of 65-feet, 10.5-inches. It was his secondstraight state championship in the shot put.

Porters fall in sectional final to SWSC Griffins

Coming in to the game, second seeded Lockport was looking to stop an eight-game losing streak to top seed Lincoln-Way East Friday in the Minooka Sectional final.

But the Porters were unable to get the big hit when it mattered most throughout the game and they fell 5-0, ending their season at 31-5. It was the third straight year the Griffins, who won their fourth straight sectional title, knocked the Porters out of the playoffs.

“We have a great sectional,” Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said. “There is a lot of talent here. We had two great teams matched up and someone has to lose and unfortunately it was us today.”

The theme of the game for Lockport was leaving runners on base and the first inning set the tone after a leadoff double led to no runs.

“When you don’t score after a leadoff double in the first inning, it kind of sets that tone,” Chovanec said. “We didn’t answer them right away and we left a lot of runners on. We just didn’t find the hits today when we needed it. It is a game of inches and those inches didn’t go our way today.”

In the third and fourth innings, the Porters had runners on second and third with one out and couldn’t score and had the first two runners on in the seventh and couldn’t cross home.

“We were in positions where we were behind throughout the season and they believed they could come back,” Chovanec said. “We just couldn’t get that extra hit today.”

Lockport went with freshman Gianna Bauer on the mound and after three first inning runs, she was relieved by junior Elly Hagen.

“It was our game plan all along, since we planned to be here the last time we played them,” Chovanec said of starting the freshman. “They hadn’t seen Gianna

We had a tough call in the first inning and then a couple of walks. Our defense gave them a couple extra outs.

The game then slips away.”

Chovanec was confident the Porters would be playing for a sectional title weeks ago because of the experience and will of the team to get there.

“We have a great group of seniors and a core group of juniors who have been on varsity three years,” Chovanec said. “They wanted to be here and buy into

the system. They had fun every day and believed in what we were doing.”

While the season ended similarly to the past two, it doesn’t change the fact that it was the most successful season for the Porters in several years.

“I can’t say enough about the kids and their desire to be here every day and have fun doing it,” Chovanec said. “This was the first time in a while we were in this position and its been a long time since we’ve won 30-plus games. 31-5, I’m so proud of all these kids.”

Meyer then went on to place second in the discus with a throw of 189-05.

Those two were not the only locals to earn state medals, as Minooka senior Brennan Loughran placed ninth in the pole

vault, clearing 14-0.

Another Minooka senior, Colin Marchio, placed ninth in the 100 dash in 10.95 seconds.

A pair of Indians advanced to the finals, but did not finish in the top nine and earn a medal.

Senior Steve Lasinis was 10th in the long jump with a jump of 22-04.25 and junior Dominic Ruettiger was 11th in the pole vault, clearing 14-feet.

There were also several locals

who competed in the state meet, but did not advance to the finals.

Lockport junior Conor McCarthy competed in the long jump (20-11.25) and the triple jump (40-06.25).

In the pole vault, Lockport senior Andrew Novak missed on the opening height, as did Joliet West senior Dalin Lockman in the high jump.

In the shot put, Lockport’s Kevin Pokorski (51-11.25) and Joliet

Central senior Angelo Villanueva (50-10.50) both competed in the finals.

Joliet Central junior Oswaldo Guzman posted a time of 1:57.32 in the 800 run, while Minooka junior Brandon Adams ran a 49.23.

The lone area relay was the Minooka 4×400 team of junior Aaron Arroyo, freshman Hector Ramos, junior James Sanchez and junior Brandon Adams, who posted a time of 3:22.85.

Age is no reason to adjust Baby Steps

DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are in our 50s, and we have just $12,000 to pay off before we’re debt-free. We’ve paid off almost $70,000 in debt in the last two years. We would like to

buy a house soon, but we know we also need an emergency fund.

It would take us almost a year to build up an emergency fund, so should we make adjustments to the Baby Steps since we’re getting older?

DAWN DEAR DAWN, No! It shouldn’t take you two a year to build up an emergency fund considering the rate at which you’ve been paying off debt. You need a fully funded emergency fund or three to six months of expenses set aside before you start saving for a down payment on a home.

You’ve been making great progress, and you obviously have a good income to be able to pay off debt that quickly. Maybe in your case you could lean a little more toward the three-month side with your emergency fund before you start saving for a house. Then, after you’re all moved in, you could revisit the emergency fund and beef it up to six months.

Just stay on course and stick with the plan, Dawn. Fifty isn’t old.

You two have plenty of time to get your finances in order, find a great home, and look forward to many great years ahead!

DA R N E L L Dennis L. Darnell, 73, a resident of Plainfield since 1971, formerly of Batavia, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born July 20, 1943 in Aurora.

Beloved husband of Gloria K. Darnell (nee Swanson), whom he married May 25, 1963, loving father of Jay (Terri) Darnell of Plainfield, Joy (Mike) Curbis of Plainfield and Jeff (Vicky) Darnell of Joliet, adored grandfather of Abbey, Hannah and Hunter Darnell; Kayla, Jenna and Maggie Curbis; Stephanie Darnell, devoted son of the late Norman and Arlene (nee Gee) Darnell, dear brother of Larry (Bernice) Darnell of The Villages, Orlando, Fla., and the late Robert Darnell, brotherin-law of Gretchen (Cal) Byrd of Batavia, and Gary (Sandy) Swanson of Maple Park, IL, fond cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend to many.

Dennis grew up in Batavia and was a 1961 graduate of Batavia High School. He was employed as a sheet metal worker for many years and was a member

of Sheet Metal Workers Local 265, Carol Stream. Dennis enjoyed bowling.
