Keepingupwiththeaccumulative costs of electronic recycling is taking a toll on Will County and its governing agencies.

When Will County’s electronics recycler ended its contract unexpectedly at the end of 2015, the trickle down effect forced the closing of recycling centers in most towns throughout Will County.

In the past, 13 municipalities in Will County served as electronic drop-off centers, including Bolingbrook, Channahon Township, Forest Preserve District of Will County—Laraway in Joliet and Monee Reservoir, Godley Park District, Homer Glen, Lockport, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox, Romeoville, Troy Township Highway Department, and Washington Township/Beecher.

That number dropped to four by the end of 2015. And by February, all centers were closed.

Agencies across the state saw it coming, as recycling centers couldn’t keep up with the demand.

Marta Keane, Will County recycling specialist, explains that electronic recycling was first introduced in 2008. At that time, the Illinois Recycling Association estimated that each person generated 7 pounds of electronic

weight, yet a goal of only 3 pounds person was set for manufacturers required by law to reuse or recycle a percentage of the total weight of devices sold in Illinois.

Manufacturers of electronic equipment are expected to reach a goal of 50 percent of whatever they sold two years prior.

To avoid a penalty, manufacturers generally pay third-party recyclers that also accept waste collected by other entities, including counties and municipalities. With growing amounts of electronic waste, manufacturer payments are not enough to fully recuperate recycling and hauling costs, forcing local governments and taxpayers to make up the difference.

Lawmakers changed the legislation last year, upping the weight to 4 pounds.

However, this still wasn’t enough, according to Keane.

Meanwhile markets for recyclable materials began to drop dramatically, making it less attractive for manufacturers.

Keane continued to explain that the county was working with Vintage Tech recycling who initially had a great relationship with many forward-thinking manufacturers.

However, Vintage Tech was bought out by a new company, Kuusakoski, which used different procedures for recycling CRT glass – a – complicated process and one that manufacturers reportedly

According to Keane, Vintage Tech was once able to get one-third of the weight by manufacturers, and now ended up getting zero.

It was then in 2015 that Vintage Tech, now Kuusakoski, was unable to stay in business, terminating its contract and forcing the closure of the county’s recycling centers.

The county was without any open centers for two months in March and April.

Towns such as Bolingbrook, opted to work with its waste management company, Groot, and offered curbside electronic recycling beginning June 1. The village had budgeted $100,000 for the expense in its 2015-16 budget.

Plainfield and Beecher have offered similar programs at a cost ranging from $6 to $15 a year tacked on to resident’s waste pickup bills.

Romeoville Village Manager Steve Gulden said the village is discussing options with Waste Management and exploring different alternatives.

The county has since entered into a new contract with recycler ERI, which is based in Indiana, and may have a new alternative.

Electronic recycling in the county began again in May, however, it is a much-reduced version with a different level of service. Essentially the recycler just provides a 53foot trailer and sanitization wrap.

The center is responsible for manning, sorting and packaging any recyclables.

One facility is now open with reduced hours from 6 to 11 a.m., Tuesday through Friday at Lockport Public Works, 17112 Prime Blvd.

All Will County residents, who must show a valid ID, can drop off

recyclables.

In addition, the latest discussion involves using a third-party vendor to run a two hour collection drive twice a month in a community. So far, the Peotone Police Department and village of New Lenox have signed up for the program.

Keane said individual villages can choose which days to have a collection, either on a day in the first and third or second and fourth weeks of the month. Basing on the fact that Lockport, which sees customers from all over Will County, sees about 100 cars per five hour period, she believes having these collection days would suffice any community’s recycling needs.

“This would be a great way to do it without charging residents,” said Keane. “Basically we need to rebuild the whole system with limited labor.”

Downtown farmers market kicks off 2016 season

The Joliet City Center Partnership kicked off the summer season June 8 with the opening day of its new farmers market to a crowd in downtown Joliet.

Highlights of this year’s market are activities for children, live music and local breweries, as well as a policy mandating that sale items must be homegrown or homemade.

Also new to the event, Chicago Street Pub & Grill in Joliet provided

brews for patrons to drink as they shopped.

Sarah Strickland, marketing and events manager for the Joliet City Center Partnership, said the goal in launching this year’s farmers market is to help the public recognize that it’s under new management.

“We are holding a ribbon cutting to signify our new approach,” she said.

In the past, the weekly shopping event was held Friday evening.

Strickland said the hope is that people will come out and join them this year.

“We’ve got a little bit for

everyone—catering to all ages,” she said.

Debbie Webb Velensky, owner of Allium Sage Botanics, was one of many vendors setting up shop at the farmers market opening day.

She’s been in business for about three years.

“My daughter had really sensitive skin and she broke out using [traditional bath products],” Velensky said. “I started doing everything all natural and [the business] just grew from there.”

As part of her business, Velensky does custom facemasks and grows her own herb-based skincare products. This year was

her first time with a booth at the Joliet farmers market. So far, she’s enjoying the experience.

“I only do two markets, but I love the market atmosphere,” she said.

Dawn McIntosh, of Joliet, was one of many people that chose to check out the market on its opening day. She has been a regular patron of the market for the last five years, and said it’s nice to see how much it has changed. “[There’s] more people, so you have more of a community-type feel to it,” McIntosh added. “They have a lot of different products and different kind of vendors.”

More than 20 vendors were

on hand for opening day at the farmers market, including Milano Bakery, Pick. at Garden Patch Farms, Around Roots and more.

Strickland said she hopes people realize the benefits of choosing to shop there. “[It’s the] return to the local economy,” she said. “I don’t think people realize how important it is to support local entrepreneurs.”

The Downtown Joliet Farmers Market is open from 4-9 p.m. every Wednesday through Sept.

21 (except Sept. 14). Festivities will be held between Chicago and Van Buren Street. Live music will also be available from 6-8 p.m.

When local legislators came back to the Fountaindale Public Library for their second town hall meeting in Bolingbrook, they didn’t believe they would still be talking about the budget crisis facing the state.

Residents from throughout the area came to the meeting, sponsored by State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, with questions about school funding, cuts to social services, pension reform and increased taxes.

Fountaindale Library Board President Peggy Danhof kicked off the event thanking BertinoTarrant, Sen. Pat McGuire and state reps. Emily McAsey and Natalie Manley for hosting the event. Danhof then called on them to put a halt to a property tax freeze that would essentially leave a shortfall for the library district, which receives 95 percent of its operating revenue from property taxes.

The discussion turned into a repeat of last year’s town hall, with lawmakers saying they are fighting to fix the state’s financial troubles by not only relying on cutbacks but trying to push through a change in how government works.

“I never thought that we would be here again with so much hurt behind us,” said McAsey. “...Some of these propositions have been penny wise but pound foolish. We can’t just cut everything, we have to be judicious about it.”

McGuire explained that 90 percent of the state’s budget obligations are being met, but added that the 10 percent of the budget that is at a standstill involves education and human services funding.

He said legislators had come up with a plan that filled the $7.8 billion hole in the state budget, identifying a plan including $2.7 million in cuts and $5.3 billion in creating new revenue. However, both parties could not agree, said McGuire.

The best measure to come forward is a stop gap budget that will get the state through to the election, McGuire added.

As of press time, legislators were not yet called back to session to vote on the proposed budget, and the hope is that will happen before June 30 and another fiscal

year begins without a budget.

“I am hopeful that the legislature is in the midst of fruitful discussion and that there is a true meeting of the minds to devise a plan that will address real concerns--making sure schools are open and that services are intact for those that need it,” said McAsey.

To do that, the group of Democratic legislators agreed the state needs a comprehensive spending plan.

“At the end of the day, we are still working--our role is to protect our district and express our opinion,” said Bertino-Tarrant. “...We have been close to a higher education bill and saving services.

Republicans want to provide lump sums and Democrats want it itemized to see where its is allocated.”

Manley said she has seen the annihilation of social service programs and strongly believes cuts are not the answer.

For many in the audience, like Gertrude Harper of Bolingbrook, it was about social services. Harper noted the importance of keeping preschool programs open at the Alpha Missionary Baptist Church and ensuring that Hesed House in Aurora -- one of the largest homeless shelters in the area -- up and running.

Manley. “You just can’t wipe them out.”

She explains that cutting some programs just may create larger problems with greater cost in the end.

“We can’t cut ourselves out of this situation,” said Manley. “It requires logical cuts and increased revenue; that’s the only way it will work.”

The legislators compelled everyone in attendance to contact those lawmakers who did “not get that fact.”

Other attendees questioned

the burden placed on business owners faced with an increased cost in worker’s compensation and the ongoing debate on pension reform.

“I am set to retire; what is going to keep me in Illinois,” said Lynn Dempsey.

The legislators at the June 16 meeting said those issues would be addressed by continued rate reviews, a modernization of the tax system and a better spending plan.

of ways to increase revenue, such as increasing income taxes, gaming expansion, broadening the sales tax and placing a tax on sugary drinks.

In an effort to reverse the increasing number of heroin overdose deaths in the area, the Will County Board voted unanimously to allocate $30,000 from a federal Justice Assistance Grant to continue heroin prevention curriculum in county schools.

Board members recently approved a recommendation from Will County Executive Larry Walsh

to apply for a U.S. Department of Justice grant to introduce the Robert Crown Center for Health Education’s heroin prevention curriculum in the Lincoln-Way High Schools and the Wilmington Community Unit School District.

“Heroin abuse continues to plague our entire nation and as county leaders, we are obligated to do as much as possible to help fight this crisis,” Walsh said in a news release announcing the grant application. “These federal grant dollars will enable us to continue to educate our children about the dangers of heroin and other prescription drug abuse.”

Troy School District, and Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202. Robert Crown’s heroin prevention curriculum teaches children to understand the risks associated with drug use, specifically targeting heroin and prescription pain medication.

“I believe it’s important to partner and work with our local school districts to provide resources and as much education as possible about the dangers of heroin use,” said Will County Board member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox. “I look forward to seeing this program begin in more schools throughout Will County, as it’s an important step in fighting back against the epidemic.”

The 2016 justice assistance grant

would allow the curriculum to be presented to approximately 1,750 freshmen students in the Lincoln Way High School District and 210 eighth and ninth grade students in the Wilmington School District.

“We are very thankful to Will County for offering this important prevention education to our students and their families,” said Matt Swick, soon to be superintendent for the Wilmington School District. “Our communities have been particularly hard hit by this heroin crisis and we must do all we can to educate our students about the dangers of drug abuse.”

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data indicate that 2014 was the deadliest year on record for drug overdoses in the U.S. In the past four years, heroin overdose deaths have more than tripled.

With the exception of Cook County, Will County had a higher number of heroin overdose deaths in 2015 than any other Illinois county. Last year, 53 people died of heroin overdose death in the county, representing an approximately 50 percent increase over 2014 figures.

“We are approaching the heroin epidemic in a comprehensive way,” Walsh said. “By educating students in a pro-active manner before they get caught up in this awful drug and also having first responders prepared to deal with the negative consequences of heroin use, we are hoping to save lives and get people on the road to recovery.”

Last year, Will County launched a program to equip and train first responders to administer the heroin overdose antidote naloxone to individuals experiencing an overdose.

Catholic schools in Joliet Diocese offer tuition grant Schools offering a $1,500 grant for those transferring from public or charter schools

Select Catholic elementary schools in Will, DuPage and Kendall counties of the Diocese of Joliet are offering a $1,500 tuition transfer grant to students who transfer from any public, non-Catholic private, home school or charter school.

This grant is offered to students entering first through seventh grade of the 2016-17 school year and is not available to students currently enrolled in a Catholic school in the various dioceses in Illinois.

“The purpose of this grant is to

provide parents, who may not be able to afford a Catholic education, with a choice as to where they want to send their children to school,” Rev. John Belmonte, diocesan superintendent of Catholic schools.

Will County’s Mobilizing Action for Planning and Partnerships Collaborative is backing a new initiative designed to reduce healthcare costs. The “Know Where to Go” campaign is designed to help area residents find and utilize a “medical home” as an alternative to ER visits and quick care clinics for medical non-emergencies. “‘Know Where to Go’ will lower healthcare costs for everyone and result in higher quality medical outcomes,” MAPP Collaborative Coordinator Jenny Gorszczyk said.

“The numbers really tell the story.”

Gorszczyk, who is the community planning program manager for the Will County Health Department’s Division of Family Health Services, said a patientcentered medical home decreases the cost of care by approximately 500 percent, compared with ER visits.

“If all Will County residents were to utilize a medical home for nonemergency care, the collective savings is estimated to be $18 billion annually,” she added. “Not

only that, but the care you receive from your medical home is likely to be more accessible and of a higher quality too.”

The health department defines a “medical home” as a place where a patient’s health care is coordinated by a primary care provider. A primary care provider can be a doctor’s office, community health center, clinic or health department.

Gorszczyk also noted that the biggest advantage of utilizing a medical home is consistent care.

Local airports need a lifeline editorial

Local airports and aviation are important to communities

When most people think of aviation, they often think of Chicago, commercial service and O’Hare International Airport. But there is so much more. Throughout the rest of the state, there are close to 98 general aviation airports that connect hundreds of communities. Medevacs, blood banks, law enforcement use small aircraft to transport people, supplies and survey neighborhoods.

And, general aviation contributes more than $9 billion to the state’s total economic output and supports more than 42,000 jobs. Specifically, companies of all sizes use general aviation to conduct business more efficiently, travel to meet with customers and suppliers, deliver parts and tools quickly, and travel to places without commercial service.

Local airports and the aviation industry also offer promising careers and job growth. Training and degree programs like the ones at Lewis University, Parkland College and Southern Illinois University, just to name a few, are teaching young people to be pilots and mechanics.

And this industry supports the passion for flight, as well. From 1910, when a group of flying enthusiasts founded the Aero Club of Illinois at Cicero Field, to the current City of Chicago Air & Water Show and Wings Over Waukegan, aviation connects communities and inspires people of all ages.

General aviation is also critical to transporting patients and their families seeking medical treatment.

Organizations such as Lifeline Pilots, based in Peoria, fly patients and their families to specialized medical treatment centers in and around the region.

For example, recently, a volunteer pilot flew a one-year-old boy and his family from the St. Louis area to the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia for lifesaving heart surgery. The boy had a compromised immune system,

preventing him from traveling on a commercial flight. General aviation and the generosity of volunteer pilots made this treatment and flights like this everyday possible.

But this may not always be the case.

In Washington, some have proposed taking away governance over our air traffic system away from Congress and putting it under a board of directors that would be dominated by the big airlines. This board would dominate decisions about fees, routes, what airports get invested in.

This type of system would likely leave smaller communities left out - the same communities that have seen their routes cut by 20 percent over the last several years.

Right now, our air transportation system is the busiest, the largest and the most diverse in the world.

Thousands of airports serve millions of passengers and communities large and small. Let’s keep it that way and make sure our aviation system stays open to business for everyone.

By Voyager Media Staff The Bugle, Enterprise and Sentinel newspapers took home numerous awards during the annual Illinois Press Association convention and awards ceremony, held June 8-10 in Springfield.

Voyager Media’s editorial staff won 13 awards in categories recognizing best school board coverage and government beat reporting, among others; the advertising department added another 14 awards in categories such as ad design and niche publications.

Among the top honors for the editorial department was a first place award for Best Special Section.

The award recognized a one-time

special insert published along with the Aug. 27 issues of the Joliet Bugle, Shorewood Sentinel and Plainfield Enterprise commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1990 Plainfield tornado.

“Where We Stand: Remembering the 1990 Tornado 25 Years Later” explored the myriad ways Plainfield and nearby towns came together following the deadly storm to rebuild structures, re-establish a new sense of community and ultimately remember the 8 minutes in August that transformed the area. Judges commented that, “This section does a wonderful job of recapping what happens, honoring those who suffered, and providing info for the present and the future.”

Another of the paper’s first-place awards was for Best Original Column.

Daniel Smrokowski won the award for his monthly ”Special Voices” column, in which Smrokowski shares the unique stories of area residents with different intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as

updates on Special Olympics Illinois.

Judges said his column was “inspiring and generally well written.”

Niles area reporter Igor Studenkov also took top honors, receiving a first place award for Government Beat Reporting and a second place award for Best School Board Coverage.

Guided by a commitment to provide its online readers with the same highquality news content, Voyager Media’s editorial staff received a second-place award in the Best Website category for www.buglenewspapers.com. Judges said the website was a “close second” and described it as “a good site” that is easy to view and navigate.

Additionally, the sports department won third place for the Plainfield Enterprise sports section.

Fifty-nine newspapers submitted nearly 900 contest entries for the competition.

The Illinois Press Association represents 450 daily and non daily newspapers. Its headquarters are in Springfield.

Mistwood redesign completed with finished clubhouse

Anyone that lives in the Will County area and has driven down Renwick Road in Romeoville has without a doubt witnessed the evolution of Mistwood Golf Club.

Those who just drive by on occasion or one time will see beautiful buildings from the road and a peek at the golf course that lies behind them.

However, it is not until you park your car in the parking lot and walk past the bag drop do you really realize the amazing facility that lies 45 minutes outside of Chicago.

Over the last few years the golf course itself was redesigned and a state-of-the art Performance Center was built.

Now, the next phase is complete and it is the most obvious to the passer by.

Settled closest to the road is the newest building that houses The Great Hall and McWethy’s Tavern.

The Hall is a venue that can host functions from weddings, fundraisers or a corporate meeting and can accommodate from up to 220 people – more with tenting options.

Sharing a building with the Great Hall is McWethy’s – a Tavern that offers a full menu with something for everyone. It can be a great place to eat after playing 18 holes or just a place to go for a nice meal.

While McWethy’s does allow the non golfers to enjoy the ambiance of Mistwood without teeing up a single shot – golf is still the name of the game at Mistwood – and what golf it has.

The round starts with a 395 yard par-4 that makes you think right off the bat as the hole offers a split fairway with a creek that offers players options on how to attack the tee shot. A good approach is also critical as bunkers on the sides and behind the green wait for a bad shot.

The second hole is a slightly shorter par-4 that features a wide fairway, but also has a pair of stacked sod bunkers in the middle that players must navigate to score well.

Hole 3 is the first par-5 on the course and the first time water comes into play and it is also the first of several chances you get to play while looking into the stunning architecture. Long hitters can reach the green in 2, but an undulating green makes it a difficult putt once you are there.

Number 4 is a 400-plus yard par 4 that features rolling hills and more stacked sod bunkers, while 5 is another medium range par 4 that again sees water come into play.

After a sharp dogleg right par 4 on number 6, the seventh hole offers the first of four par 3s on the course.

The front nine ends with a 600yard par-5 on No. 8 that again brings the large loch into play. The hole was dubbed “one of the top par 5s in the country” by Dan Jenkins from Golf Digest. It is followed by a 180-yard par-3 that again brings the clubhouse into sight.

After grabbing a quick sandwich and a drink at the turn, players are treated to a short par-4 to open the

back nine. Like many holes on the course, this is another risk/reward hole that could offer players a nice way to open the second half of the round.

Number 11 is also a hole that could yield a birdie for hitters that can get the ball out into the fairway and take advantage of the 440-yard par-4.

Hole 12 is another midrange par 4 with water on one side and a separating the fairway. The approach shot is key here as the

deepest of all the stacked sod bunkers sits directly in the front center of the green all but daring players to challenge it.

Starting with 13, water becomes a nemesis as you complete your round.

Number 14 is a gorgeous par3 over the loch that requires a precise tee shot to avoid water and bunkers.

Locals named to all-area team; Dimovski earns POY

Having back-to-back seasons cut short due to ACL tears is a bit much for many athletes to come back from.

Not so for Downers Grove South’s Alexa Dimovski.

Not only did Dimovski come back from twice tearing her ACL earlier in her career with the Mustangs, she came back with a vengeance, scoring 26 goals and adding nine assists, the second straight-year she led the team in scoring.

Those accomplishments make

her the 2016 Voyager Media Soccer Player of the Year.

“It feels really great,” Dimovski said. “I was a lot stronger this year. I worked a lot harder from my junior to senior year. I did a lot of strength training and I really wanted to come back because of my love for soccer.”

June 13 is not the best day for Dimovski as she had ACL surgery on the exact same day two years in a row after her freshman and sophomore seasons.

However, she would not give up her dream of playing soccer.

“It was hard, especially the second time around knowing I had

to come back from it again,” she said. “It took a lot of hard work and commitment.”

Dimovski, a Division-II Maryville University recruit, also became more of a leader on the field in her senior campaign.

“This season Lexi really stepped into a leadership role and was a truly combative and skilled presence that demanded that the team match the same expectations she set for herself,” DGS coach Chris Hernandez said. “This is Lexi’s fourth season on varsity, but only her second completed season due to consecutive seasons with ACL injuries. Taking this into account

Lexi’s career feats have been remarkable. There are few players who are as clutch as Lexi as nine of her 26 goals were game-tying or game-winning. Lexi has moved into the top-10 in program history for career goals as well as goals scored in a season.”

TAYLOR BARZOWSKI The Maine South senior anchored the defense for the Hawks and was an all-conference and all-sectional selection.

“Taylor was our rock in the back,” Maine South coach JJ Crawford said.

“She will be playing soccer next year at Minnesota State. She had the ability to mark the other teams best player out of games. She was also the team’s emotional leader.”

ALYSE DUTCHER A senior defender for Downers North, Dutcher was an allconference and all-sectional selection this year.

“She is a senior captain on our team and was a major part of our 15 shutouts during our 14-6-1 season,” Downers North coach Bob Calder said. “She is a leader

A 500-plus yard par-5, the fairway wraps 90 degrees left around the water. Most hitters can fly some part of the loch – the question is, how far left to do you dare go?

The hole plays longer for those not willing to try and go over the water.

Once over off the tee, the second shot offers the loch to the left with a very narrow landing zone for to put you in a good position for an approach.

Again, more water on the par-4 16, but a straight hitter can manage this one with a solid drive leaving a short but guarded approach shot.

The final par-3 on the course is No. 17. While there is water on the left here, it is not nearly as in play as the previous holes with the exception of an errant tee shot.

The par-5 18th requires a straight tee shot as the left side of the fairway is guarded by bunkers

and the right side could see your ball end up in the trees or out on Renwick Road for the erratic hitter.

Skilled players can reach the green in two, however, be cautious of the creek cutting across the end of the fairway on your second shot.

Greens fees at Mistwood are $85 on weekdays and $105 Friday through Sunday, with a discount after 2 pm that offers a $65 play on weekdays and $85 on the weekends.

For the price and location, the course is one a skilled player will want to play over and over to try and master, but is worth every dollar for an average player to spoil himself and play at an amazing course for a price that is competitive, if not below, some of its counterparts.

Once a player experiences all that Mistwood has to offer after the two-year renovation project, they will return either for more golf, a lesson or just to have dinner.

MACAYLA DWYER Romeoville goalie was busy throughout the year, but the sophomore was still able to record five shutouts. She made 183 saves on the season.

“Macayla is probably hands down the best goalie in the SPC conference,” Romeoville coach Philip Wicyk said. “She plays on a team in which only six athletes play year-round. When you ask a goalie to make 17-plus saves a game against conference opponents and still keep your team in the game is huge. Most of the goals allowed on her have been break-aways

SAM ELSTER Plainfield North four-year varsity player had three goals and 16 assists this year from her midfield position.

“Sam has been the heart and soul of our team this year in the middle of the field,” North coach Jane Crowe said. “She is consistently the best player on the field. Her work rate, vision, and technical ability are rarely matched by her opponent.

She is the most competitive player that I have ever coached.”

KATIE GESIOR Benet junior posted a team-best 11 goals this season en route to being named the ESCC Player of

the Year.

“Katie is a three-year varsity starter whose versatility allowed her to fill both offensive and defensive needs as a central midfielder,” Benet coach Bob Gros said. “She has excellent composure on the ball in tight spaces and makes quality decisions to get our offense to flow.

Katie is outstanding on set pieces and led our team in goals with 11.

She is an exceptional leader on and off of the field who has already been named a team captain as a junior.”

ERIN GRAEFEN A junior from Plainfield Central, Graefen recorded 10 goals and three assists on the season.

“Erin does a great job possessing the ball up top for us,” Central coach Ken Schoen said. “She is dangerous in 1v1 situations because she has fantastic skill on the ball and finishes well. She is also outstanding in the air as her 184 recorded headers this

season attests. She also understands when her team needs her to drop back and help defend. Erin is the heart of our team.”

MOLLY GRANT A freshman from Plainfield North, Grant led the Tigers with 16 goals, while adding four assists.

“Molly was our leading scorer this year and became a much more dangerous player as the season went on,” Crowe said. “Her effort off of the ball made her a difficult player for defenders to handle. As just a freshman, Molly made an immediate impact in the area as a goal scorer.”

JAMIE HANSEN Hansen, a senior defender from Lockport, was an All-State player a year ago and finished this season with three goals and six assists.

“Jamie Hansen was an All-State player last year and she has grown

tremendously as a player this year,” Lockport coach Todd Elkei said.

“She has been the anchor of our defense for the past three years. As our center back she has dominated every game she has played in. Two of our losses and one tie came with Jamie out with an injury. I believe she is the top defender not only in our sectional, but in all of the games I have seen this year. Jamie has great speed, size, touch, and an ability to read plays before they happen. She constantly wins the ball 1 v 1. There is a lot of talent in the room and often times defenders get overlooked, for her efforts game in and game out, and from what I have seen this year from other teams, Jamie deserves to be the number one player in the room.”

choice. Be proactive and find trusted charities that are providing assistance.

State Government Registration About 40 of the 50 states require charities to register with a state government agency (usually a division of the State Attorney General’s office) before they solicit for charitable gifts. If the charity is not registered, that may be a significant red flag.

Respecting Victims and Their Families Organizations raising funds should get permission from the families to use either the names of the victims and/or any photographs of them. Some charities raising funds for the Colorado movie theater victims did not do this and were the subject of criticism from victims’ families.

How Will Donations Be Used?

Watch out for vague appeals that don’t identify the intended use of funds. For example, how will the donations help victims’ families?

Also, unless told otherwise, donors will assume that funds collected quickly in the wake of a tragedy will be spent just as quickly. See

if the appeal identifies when the collected funds will be used.

What if a Family Sets Up Its Own Assistance Fund?

Some families may decide to set up their own assistance funds. Be mindful that such funds may not be set up as charities. Also, make sure that collected monies are received and administered by a third party such as a bank, CPA or lawyer.

This will help provide oversight and ensure the collected funds are used appropriately (e.g., paying for funeral costs, counseling and other tragedy-related needs.)

Advocacy Organizations Tragedies that involve violent acts with firearms can also generate requests from a variety of advocacy organizations that address gun use. Donors can support these efforts as well but note that some of these advocacy groups are not tax exempt as charities. Also, watch out for newly created advocacy groups that will be difficult to check out.

treet performers, live New Orleans-style music and great food with a cajun kick brought the Big Easy to Joliet earlier this month.

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce held the fifth annual New Orleans North festival June 10 in downtown Joliet.

From 5 to 11 p.m., hundreds of festivalgoers age 21 and up were treated to a taste of Mardi Gras.
