New Orleans North brings southern vibes to downtown ‘It’s proved to be a lot of fun’

Southern vibes returned to Joliet June 9 at the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s sixth annual New Orleans North.

The downtown area transformed into a street festival, as people who donned beaded necklaces came together to celebrate.

“It’s the kickoff to summer festival,” said Mary Jaworski, president of Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “We have the Taste of Joliet coming up. [New Orleans North] is the first one.”

Live entertainment, food, street performers and a raffle drawing were some of the highlights captured throughout the evening.

“We have a little bit of everything,” Jaworski said.

Typically, the event brings in between 5,000 and 6,000 people.

The event’s popularity rings true for many, Jaworski said.

“It’s an ages 21 and older event,” she said, noting the City of Joliet doesn’t have another community event like it. “It’s proved to be a lot of fun.”

Taylor Quain, of Lockport, said she was enjoying the evening.

“It’s really nice,” she said. “I think that when the sun’s going

down, it’s obviously much cooler, but there’s a lot of drinks and there’s food,” she said. “The music is really good, so that’s exciting.”

This year was Quain’s first time attending New Orleans North.

Quain said she never imagined what they would find when her and her friends decided to go.

“It’s [a] pretty good [turnout,] and I heard it’s going to get more packed as the night goes on, so that’s going to be exciting to see,” she said.

Roberta Cronholm, of Lockport, went on to agree, and said it’s still early.

“It gets so packed a little bit later,” she said.

This year was Cronholm’s third time attending the event.

Cronholm said she had been looking forward to returning to New Orleans North.

“You enjoy the music, have some drinks and get to catch up with old friends,” she said. “It’s been fun.”

Juana Hollenbeck, of Joliet, was enjoying the festival’s signature Hurricane drink.

“We already ate,” she said. “The food was good.”

Hollenbeck came to this year’s festival with her husband, Paul.

“We just got back from New Orleans actually last week,” she said.

“We’ve been there a few times, and this is our first time here. We said we wanted to compare to the real thing. It’s perfect. It’s awesome. It’s really festive.”

Garden Walk to benefit Joliet Hospice Hospice invites community June 24 to participate in this year’s Garden Walk

Betsy Sullivan knows how important it is to support the Joliet Area Community Hospice’s pediatric program. So, when an opportunity arose 11 years ago to start an annual community event raising funds to benefit the organization that provided assistance to her grandson, Sullivan said she knew she needed to take action.

“It’s been rewarding to see it,” she said of the event. “We never dreamed it would be going on 11 years later.”

Joliet Area Community Hospice invites the community June 24 to participate in this year’s Garden Walk.

It provides an opportunity for people to go on self-guided

tours of several gardens located in Shorewood, Joliet, New Lenox, Plainfield and Channahon.

“It has been a wonderful event, and we are so lucky for the people who open up their beautiful gardens to our guests,” said Laureen Crotteau, event and media specialist for Joliet Area Community Hospice. “The gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They can get advice from the gardeners, too.”

Crotteau said people tend to like what the event offers.

“They enjoy seeing new things and getting new ideas,” she said.

From flowers and garden art to ponds and butterfly gardens, guests acquire ideas to try in their yards—whether shady or sunny, small or large space, flat or hilly.

“Our gardens offer something for everyone,” Crotteau promised.

About 300 guests are anticipated to participate in the 11th annual event.

Typically, the Garden Walk raises between $12,000 and $14,000.

“The proceeds benefit our pediatric program,” Crotteau said.

“JACH is one of very few hospices in our area that offer a pediatric hospice and palliative care program. We do not turn anyone away regardless of economic status, so the money raised helps the families who have children in our care.”

We tried to do as many normal activities with him. He was wheelchairbound, and he couldn’t move his legs or arms. He had Cerebral Palsy.”

Timmy saw a pediatric nurse twice a week until he died in 2012.

Sullivan said Joliet Area Community Hospice has done a lot for her family.

Prior to the event’s initial launch, the Sullivans participated in several Garden Walks over the years.

“We thought wouldn’t this be a nice way to support Joliet Area Community Hospice,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan and her husband continue to run a garden for others in

the community to view during the event.

Sullivan said people often come up to she and her husband telling them they’re appreciative of them for spreading the word about Joliet Area Community Hospice.

“A lot of people think that’s for older adults,” she said of hospice care.

The event’s popularity is clear, Sullivan said.

“Over the years, some have asked to be in [the Garden Walk] a second and third time,” she said.

“We try to look for new gardens.”

Tickets will cost $15 each, and they can be purchased by going to the Joliet Area Community Hospice office at 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, starting at one of the gardens that day to acquire a ticket or visiting www.joliethospice. org/events.

“The gardens at JACH will be part of the tour, and [it serves as] a nice place to start,” Crotteau said.

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE Older Americans may be in for a rough ride if the changes Washington politicians are considering come to pass. Because good, explanatory journalism is in short supply and TV shouting matches don’t tell you much, I decided to use this space to discuss some of the possible changes that could soon affect millions of people in their 60s and older.

First, let’s consider Medicaid, the federal-state program that finances healthcare for the poor and long term care for the middle class. Virtually all the talk about cutting Medicaid by more than $800 billion over the next 10 years has centered on the 11 million people who gained health coverage under the Medicaid provisions of the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare.

Most of those Americans will lose their health coverage if the legislation the House passed in early May to replace Obamacare gets through the Senate. Equally affected will be seniors and their families who now count on Medicaid to fund long-term care.

Medicaid pays for about half of all nursing home stays, but it also pays for care elders receive in the community under special waiver programs. These might include home care, adult day care, and other services that help people stay in their homes.

I asked Medicaid experts what would happen if the funds families now depend on disappear. All said that if federal allocations to the states are capped or

reduced in some other way, states would have less to give families needing longterm care assistance. More families will be on their own to pay for some or all of the care a loved one needs.

The U.S. has never had a policy to pay for such care, so Medicaid, by default, became the vehicle for funding. And as Judy Feder, a professor of public policy at Georgetown University, told me recently Medicaid dollars have never been sufficient to pay for the growing number of Americans needing long-term care.

Proposed changes will only make things worse.

Stacy Sanders, federal policy director for the advocacy group the Medicare Rights Center, puts it this way: “Cuts of this magnitude will end Medicaid as we know it, putting older adults’ access to home and community-based long-term care, nursing home services and other essential supports in jeopardy.”

Also, people now receiving health coverage under the Affordable Care Act could find themselves paying much higher premiums if a bill to repeal and replace eventually passes. The Housepassed bill changes the rules for insurance companies so that they can charge older people a lot more than younger ones in states that decide to opt out of certain Obamacare protections.

In a state that opts out, according to the Congressional Budget Office, a 64-year-old with an income of $26,500 could pay as much as $16,000 in annual premiums while a 21-year-old with the same income might pay only $1,700.

People would get tax subsidies depending on their age, but subsidies gradually phase out the higher the income, still leaving older people with a large premium. While this is only an illustration, it’s fair to say they would take a pocketbook hit.

They’d be hit again if a state rejects Obamacare rules that require insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions. If they no longer could buy coverage, they’d have to turn to state high-risk

pools, an old-fashioned solution that didn’t work well.

And then, what about Medicare? One of the biggest changes so far is the elimination of Medicare State Health Insurance Assistance Programs also known as SHIPs. Over 7 million people annually seek help from the SHIPs to understanding Medicare and choose Medigap policies and Medicare Advantage plans.

Because this program may disappear, if you think you’ll need help with Medicare, I suggest you check in with your local program as soon as possible.

Other services seniors rely are also on the chopping block. The Trump administration’s budget calls for cuts in rental and heating assistance. Rental assistance for low-income families would affect some 250,000 households that receive housing vouchers, and the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that about 60,000 of those households include seniors.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may also disappear. About 40 percent of eligible households include at least one person aged 60 and older.

Cuts to the food stamp program; and the elimination of federal funds to states through what’s called a block grant will also mean some meals on wheels programs will have a harder time serving seniors. Directors of meals programs told me waiting lists in some communities will be much longer.

At stake is what kind of life Americans want for their oldest citizens? Pamela Tainter-Causey, the communications director for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, offered one answer: “We are saying that seniors are becoming the forgotten class.”

Cybertip leads to arrest of man for child pornography On June 12, detectives executed a search warrant in Frankfort Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley is announcing the arrest of Sean Fields, age 31, of Frankfort. The Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division was contacted in March by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with

a tip concerning an IP address that contained thousands of child pornography images. After a thorough investigation, detectives determined that the pornography was downloaded from a residence in Frankfort Township.

On June 12, detectives executed a search warrant at 7541 W. Inverness Lane in Frankfort and spoke with Fields about his use of the specific IP account.

Fields cooperated with detectives and made statements incriminating himself.

He was taken into custody without incident and was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography.

Koepa shoots record-tying round to win first major at US Open

Brooks Koepka was a little busy over the past week and didn’t have a chance to shop for Father’s Day – what he was able to give his dad was more than a gift from any store.

The 27-year-old shot a 16-under par at Erin Hill Golf Course to win the US Open in recordtying fashion and claim the first major championship of his career that had already saw him win all over the globe.

“It’s really special. I look at all these places I won. Just won in Japan, I think, in November,” said Koepka, the first Floridaborn US Open champion. “And to win in the European Tour in Turkey and Phoenix. You look back at all the wins, even on the Challenge Tour, it’s pretty cool.

I’d love to get a map and just look at all the places I’ve won.

It’s pretty cool. But to win my first major in the United States is pretty special. It is Father’s

Day, so hopefully - like I said, I didn’t get him a card, so I really hope this works.”

Koepka won the first-ever Open in Wisconsin and did so on a golf course that eliminated the top three players in the world after 36 holes.

“I played really solid from the moment we got here on Monday and all the way through until today. The ball-striking was pretty solid,” he said. “It had to be today, especially with the wind.

And I got out with the putter there for a little bit today and all week. So all around my game is pretty solid and I couldn’t be happier.”

Koepka’s 72-hole total of 272 is tied with four players for the third-lowest 72-hole score in U.S. Open history. He ties Jack Nicklaus (Baltusrol G.C. RECORD ROUND Koepka’s win was not the only record-setting performance of the weekend.

With an eight-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th hole, Kentucky-born Justin Thomas – in only his third US Open – set a new record of score in relation to par in any round of the tournament on Saturday.

Thomas bombed a 3-wood to within eight feet on his second shot to set up the record putt.

The nine-under par round of 63 came 44 years to the day from the previous record – held

by Johnny Miller, who shot an eight-under 63 at Oakmont.

“That means I’m a part of history,” Thomas said after the round. “It means I have a lot better chance to win the tournament than I did when the day started. I mean, it’s all pretty self-explanatory, I guess, in terms of what it means. But just for me, I felt like I’ve been playing pretty well all week, and

didn’t have quite the numbers to show for it. Obviously, today I definitely had something to show for it.”

Walking to his ball on the green, Thomas knew it was for a 63, but did not know the complete historical value.

“I told Jimmy ( Johnson, his caddie) walking up there once I found out we had a putt, I said let’s try to become a part of history here. He said, yeah, let’s do it. But I had no idea in terms of 9-under being the best in the U.S. Open,” Thomas said.

Thomas said he has enjoyed playing at the first-ever US Open in Wisconsin.

“It’s up there with Kapalua in the hardest walk, I know that.

It’s long and a lot of terrain. But it’s such a cool course standing on the tee,” he said of Erin Hills.

“A hole like 3, that hole to me kind of epitomizes a U.S. Open.

When you look down and you can see the fescue kind of lining the fairways and the severe slopes and the greens really far away, and you’ve got the bunkers that have the fescue coming out of it, and you can see the slopes on the green and the change of color, that’s cool to me.

“I love golf course architecture. I would love at some point in my career to be doing that and get involved in it. But it’s a spread-out course. I’m sure the spectators may not like walk-

ing it and spectating as much as other courses. But it’s cool. You get a nice day out there, you get some great scenes. You get on a couple tees like on 5, or 15, you can see a lot of the course, so that’s pretty cool to kind of see the crowd and stuff. It’s a great track.”

The Wisconsin fans have also treated Thomas well.

“I was blown away by the support that I got today and this week. It was really cool to be honest. To feel like I had that many (fans), I don’t know if they were faking or what they were doing, but I liked it,” he said.

“They made me feel like they were pulling for me and helping me through that finish. The roars in a major in a U.S. Open are really tough to compare to anything. Just to hear all the people yelling my name and cheering me on between holes and in between shots is pretty special, so it’s a lot of fun.”

years, they’re the kind of material that if it rains, they repel water, as well. And whenever the PGA Tour comes into town, even if it’s supposed to be bright and sunny, you have a chance there’s going to be some rain or some kind of conditions. I’ve kind of stayed on the safe side there.

But this week it’s red, white and blue week. “It’s awesome hearing the fans yelling “USA” and those kind of things.”

Reed admitted he is not the sole decision maker when it comes to his outfit.

“I have any wife, my motherin-law and sister-in-law. And they mainly tell me, “This is what you’re going to wear.” I just say, “Okay. Sounds good, hun.” You know, happy wife, happy life,” Reed said. “I just go

out there and when they decide red, white and blue this week, I was all for it. Just kind of bring back not only the patriotism, but also bring back some of that Ryder Cup feelings. I felt like I was getting it going a little bit today, especially on that 14, 15, 16 stretch, just the fans started going crazy. And anytime you start hitting some quality shots and making some putts, you feel the adrenaline going.”

Outside of just wearing the colors, Reed said he understands the importance of winning the US Open as an American.

“It’s where we’re from. It’s home,” he said. “To go out and just play well tomorrow and have a chance to win the golf tournament would mean a lot.

I kind of do what I need to do today, shoot a low number, get myself back in this golf tournament. I was thinking if you can get 4 or 5-under par today, it would be a pretty good score to get yourself in the golf tournament. Go out and shoot 7 and exceed where my goal was, that’s always a positive. It just kind of builds up momentum and carries it over for tomorrow.”

FATHER LOVE After the first round, it was setting up to be a great storyline during Sunday’s final round as former major champion and Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III was on the bag for his son, Davis Love IV – or Dru has he is called, which is short for quadruple – the fourth in the lineage.

Dru shot a 75 on Friday and

missed the cut by one shot.

He still had a great time in his first major with his dad as his caddie.

“Saturday when we were pulling up I was a little excited and I started grabbing all of the bags.

I grabbed my bag, and I grabbed this and that, and he goes, whoa, whoa, whoa. This is my job this week,” Dru said. “So I’m used to getting his stuff out of the car and toting it to the locker room and following him around and doing whatever he needs.

“For the first two days it felt weird having him do the things that I’m usually doing for him, you know, handing him a golf ball or cleaning a club. But he’s caddied for me before. We’ve SEE BROOKS PAGE 10

But I definitely think when he’s walking down the range to give me golf balls it takes him about 25 minutes because everyone stops and is talking to him. Saying oh, it’s the first time we’ve ever seen your legs and this and that.

So it’s definitely been weird for him.

Dru, who is the third Love to play in the US Open, said his dad has passed on a lot of knowledge

over the years.

“He has so much advice. He passes a ton of things on from his dad, my grandfather, who also played in the U.S. Open.”

Dru said. “I think he respected him so much, his father, and listened to him so much that he passes on the same things that he told my dad. So you can’t just pick one thing. He has so much experience, has done so well on the PGA TOUR and in life. But not things that he tells me but things that I see are more important.

“Coming home from a tournament and missing the cut, he

is the exact same dad as he is if you won by 12. Doesn’t matter.

Comes home to his family, and it’s the community, St. Simons, that’s what’s the most important to him. Golf is secondary. He’s played 750-plus events and only won 21 of them, so if he based himself off golf, he wouldn’t be very successful. It’s all about other people. It’s about cousins and nieces and nephews and brothers. Yeah, he spends more time with his mom when he’s home than anybody else.

It’s just trying to learn from the things he does rather than the things he says.”

MANDY DEAR MANDY, My suggestion would be to carry it over to the next month. Lots of folks don’t use all the money in their clothing envelope during a month.

There’s nothing wrong with letting a little extra build up in one of your categories if you don’t spend it all in a given month or two.

You should be hitting the budget pretty close each month on categories like food. Getting out of debt and managing your money wisely doesn’t mean going hungry. If you do end up with a little left over in the food envelope, treat yourself to a nice dinner out, or buy something that’s food-oriented.

It was very kind of your grandparents to buy you a gift like this, but I think you can do better. You didn’t mention an amount, but let’s say you’ve got $10,000 in that company’s stock. Now, would you buy the stock if you had $10,000 sitting on the table? Most people, myself included, would say no because there’s too much risk. I wouldn’t advise having the majority of your wealth — the highest percentage of your net worth — tied up in one single company. That’s bad news.

So yes, I would sell that stock and use the money to fund a Roth IRA or multiple Roth IRAs. I invest my Roth IRA money in mutual funds that have a solid track record of outperforming the S&P 500 for 10 years or longer.
