Joliet resident wins $4 million Director testifies at House Illinois Lottery prize appropriations hearing Karen Dale purchased ticket at Lambert’s PS Fuels

Joliet resident Karen Dale scratched an Illinois Lottery 100X The Cash ticket and instantly became a millionaire.

“I can’t believe I won $4 million,” Dale said when she presented her top prize-winning ticket at the Lottery Prize Center in Des Plaines.

Dale has lived in Joliet for 25 years. She said her plans for the money include paying bills, investing, and, possibly, treating

herself to a new car.

The winning ticket was purchased at Lambert’s PS Fuels, 928 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet. Dale was in her car in the parking lot, when she scratched the ticket and discovered her win. The retailer will receive $40,000, equal to 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.

100X The Cash is a $20 instant ticket that offers more than $124 million in prizes, including eight top prizes of $4 million and 18 prizes of $100,000. Four of the $4 million prizes and nine of the $100,000 prizes have not yet been claimed. For more information, visit illinoislottery.com.

LTHS again ranks in top 10 percent of all high schools School is only Will County high school to make the list Lockport Township High School District 205 announced that it once again ranked in the top 10 percent of all high schools in the nation, according to recent rankings released by the Washington Post.

The school is the only Will County high school to make the list and ranked 68th in the state of Illinois and 1,974 out of nearly 23,000 high schools nationwide for effectively preparing students for college. The ranking makes LTHS one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools, according to the Washington Post. “[A school’s] appearance on this list means that you are trying much harder than most schools to expose your students to the demands of college,” said Jay Mathews, reporter for the Washington Post who

compiled the rankings. Since 1998, Newsweek Magazine has ranked public high schools. Five years ago, The Washington Post took over the ranking, using a similar formula of measurement – divide the number of advanced placement, international baccalaureate or other collegelevel tests a school gives by the number of graduating seniors.

The Washington Post also added private schools to the rankings. “This index serves as a measure of the rigorous curriculum offered within the school, which impacts the entire school environment,” District 205 assistant superintendent Brett Gould said. “Michelle Conway, our AP coordinator, does a remarkable job supporting the program, students and teachers, who are the core of our success.”

Gould added that the district’s high ranking in the state reflects its dedication to give LTHS students the best opportunities.

“And, without the efforts of our faculty, feeder schools and families, we wouldn’t be so successful,” he said.

Proposed legislation could provide necessary funds to restore program cuts Will County Health Department Executive Director Susan Olenek testified last week in support of Illinois House bill 4955 during an Illinois House appropriations public hearing.

One of three legislative packages considered at the April 27 hearing in Chicago, House bill 4955 appropriates nearly $87 million to the Illinois Department of Human Services.

For Will County, the proposed legislation could provide necessary funds to restore program cuts and staff layoffs announced April 21.

The Will County Board of Health moved to mitigate most of a $2.121 million current revenue shortfall by approving 53 staff layoffs and the suspension of nine health department programs during a regularly scheduled monthly business meeting. The layoffs and program suspensions are effective May 27.

The nine programs impacted include five in the agency’s Division of Behavioral Health and four in the Division of Family Health Services. Cuts are estimated to impact more than 52,000 agency clients, including 39,000 served by a school vision and hearing program, 1,800 behavioral health clients and about 4,000 clients who utilize HIV prevention and education services.

“The Will County Health Department is just one public health agency in the grand scheme of things,” said Olenek, a 27-year

Health Department veteran who became executive director in February.

“The lack of a state budget has created monumental problems impacting every corner of the state and virtually everyone living here.

For Will County, the budget impasse means thousands of people going without critical family health and behavioral health services.”

Will County Behavioral Health programs suspended include: adult psychiatric services, capitated care, crisis response, juvenile justice and psychiatric medications.

Impacted Family Health services include: HIV prevention, family case management, vision and hearing, and tobacco control and prevention.

Six of the nine programs could receive some funding if House Bill 4955 is adopted, according to the Will County Health Department.

JTHS seeks strategic planning members for periodic update Stakeholders will attend 3 sessions to examine, revise District 204 roadmap Joliet Township High Schools District 204 is currently seeking planning team members for a planned strategic plan periodic update later this year.

The district said members of the planning team will represent all stakeholder groups, including parents, teachers, students, community members, JTHS staff and the board of education.

The group will participate in three days of planning to examine and revise the district’s strategic plan, which includes an examination of community concerns with regards to hiring procedures, promotional practices and diversity practices.

“For over 14 years, Joliet Township High School has followed a comprehensive strategic plan to chart the future of the district,” Superintendent Cheryl

McCarthy said in a news releasing announcing the update. “Strategic planning has allowed the JTHS to create quality programs and opportunities for students, while ensuring fiscal responsibility and financial stability. I am excited to embark upon another chapter of strategic planning and look forward to seeing the results.”

The strategic planning periodic update will be held at the JTHS Administrative Center, 300 Caterpillar Drive, Joliet. The

sessions will take place Aug. 26 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Dec. 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All strategic planning participants are required to attend the entire duration of the three planning sessions.

Howard Feddema, an external coordinator who has worked with the district since the inception of the strategic plan, will facilitate the planning process. The district said its strategic planning process allows the board of education and administrators to involve key stakeholders during each stage of planning to positively impact the future of JTHS. “It allows JTHS to collaboratively establish a long-term vision and a blueprint for district goals and decision making,” said McCarthy.

“We realize that participating in the three day session is a significant commitment; however, the impact each individual of the team will have upon the future of our district cannot be understated.”

Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil painted a grim picture of heroin and opioid use during an event last week designed to bring attention to the deadly impact those drugs are having throughout the state.

Thus far in 2016, the county has seen 20 confirmed overdose deaths related to heroin or opioid abuse, and officials suspect that the drug played a role in an additional six pending death investigations.

“We may be at 26 before the first of May,” O’Neil said. “That’s probably going to escalate these figures into the 80s or 90s before the end of the year.”

At that rate, Will County is on pace to experience its deadliest year to date for heroin overdose – another sad reminder that the local and national heroin epidemic is still prevalent.

The county coroner’s grave prediction came during the 2016 HERO-HELPS-Southwest Coalition Community Summit – held April 29 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center in Romeoville.

O’Neill was one of several speakers from state and local agencies who spoke during the event, which is now in its fifth year.

These healthcare professionals, elected officials and other stakeholders addressed issues ranging from ways to combat the growing number of heroin overdose deaths to highlighting new statewide initiatives aimed at targeting what they all agreed was a serious public health emergency.

“Addiction is a biological, medical issue,” said Kelly O’Brien, executive director of the Kennedy Forum project in Illinois. “This is not an issue of people just not doing the right thing.”

O’Brien moderated a speaker panel on the various aspects of implementing the 2015 Heroin Crisis Act – a bipartisan bill that addresses the state’s heroin crisis by improving access to treatment and overdose prevention methods.

State Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, was the main sponsor for the House bill that ultimately became the Heroin Crisis Act. “At this time, when it is hard to productively legislate and it’s sometimes hard to collaborate, Rep. Lang and Rep. [John] Anthony managed to advance bipartisan legislation that makes a really big difference in the lives of everybody, and I mean everybody, in this state,” O’Brien said. “If people align around a common purpose, if you can be clear about what that is – even though you have a disagreement about how

to get there – you can get there.”

Prior to the panel discussion, Lang gave an overview of legislation he described as an in-depth and comprehensive approach to addressing a myriad of problems associated with heroin use and prevention.

“It deals with anything you can think of,” Lang said of the act. “It deals with drug courts, with prescription monitoring programs… with law enforcement, with education, with first responders, with medicated treatment.”

Some aspects of the new law include changes in insurance coverage for treatment; new requirements for the disposal of unused prescriptions; over-thecounter dispensing of the opioid antagonist naloxone, a drug that can reverse the effects of heroin overdose; and new requirements for state recording of drug overdose cases.

Not stopping there, the Skokie Democrat is fighting for two additional pieces of legislation.

Lang introduced a pair of bills last month that do more to address education and treatment options.

House Bill 5593 would help educate people addicted to heroin and who receive government assistance about available treatment options.

House Bill 5594 would amend the Drug Court Treatment Act by prohibiting drug court judges from denying defendant’s access to medication-assisted treatments such as methadone.

The 2016 HERO-HELPSSouthwest Coalition Community Summit is sponsored by the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization and WIll County’s Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions, in conjunction with the Southwest Coalition for Substance Abuse Issues.

“Organizations like HERO bring this [issue] to the forefront – not just in Will County but all over the state,” Lang said. “This organization understands that a crisis can lock you in place or a crisis can spur you to action.

“For all the leaders of this organization, let me say ‘Thank You’ on behalf of the Illinois General Assembly.”

Community comes together for service projects

For one weekend, the village of Plainfield and surrounding communities joined forces to better the lives of others during the Big Serve.

The annual communitywide event allowed volunteers to engage in a number of servicerelated projects April 30 and May 1. Community Christian Church, the village of Plainfield, Plainfield United Methodist Church, Saint Mary Immaculate Parish and Hope United Methodist Church, among other community organizations, led the effort.

Some of the projects lined up for this event included a DuPage River cleanup, a food pantry collection effort for Ridgewood Unity Community Food Pantry and a spa day for the elderly Lakewood Nursing Home.

Rick Koss, team leader for the Hands of Hope food distribution project and a member at Community Christian Church, said their overall mission is to make the lives of others better.

“Hands of Hope is out in Joliet and they allow us to bring all this food in and give it out to those that are in need,” he said. “Not only are we filling bellies today but we’re filling the spirit too.”

At the site, the group worked with over 25 palettes of food to package and distribute to those in need.

Last year the Big Serve brought in 800 people devoting their time by giving back to the community.

Koss said they were expecting a nice turnout for the project, and was pleased to see how engaged everyone was.

Koss added that the workflow of the volunteers appeared to be adjusting as expected to the initial wave of hesitancy and confusion.

A group of volunteers also served as a connection team during the Hands of Hope food distribution, talking to the people about what their needs are.

Rachel Elliott, of Plainfield, was in attendance for the Hands of Hope food distribution held at Community Christian Church.

She said she was excited about having the opportunity to show her support for others who are in need.

“It’s just awesome that we can reach out and serve the community for those in need,” she said. “We’re here to pray with people if they need it, just lend an ear.”

Annette Hulva, of Shorewood, was one of many people giving back to the community during the Big Serve. She said she was enjoying her time spent helping others who are in need.

“I did this event last year,” Hulva said. “We had 30, 40, 50 cars waiting for us when we arrived. It was a pretty clear message of the need in the area for free food distribution.”

She added that it’s nice being around a group of likeminded people who all want to make a difference.

Celebrating both Illinois and the love for what area libraries have to offer, the finale for the Great Read 2016 ended with great reads, great art and great movies.

The 2016 Great Read is presented by a consortium of area public and private organizations to promote literacy, reading, conversation and community in the greater Plainfield area.

Presenting this year’s theme of “Made in Illinois,” the program included Plainfield School District 202, Plainfield Public Library, Joliet Public Library, Fountaindale Public Library, Lemont Public Library, Shorewood-Troy Public Library,

White Oak Library District, Joliet Junior College, Plainfield Township, the Joliet-area Barnes & Noble store and Voyager Media.

Community members were encouraged to read books about Illinois and were able to participate in Great Read-related programs throughout the area. The program started off with patrons learning the history of how Chicago became the candy capital of the world.

All the local libraries have been planning and funding various programs and events with the focus on Illinois for the past month.

On April 13, more than 100 members of the Special Olympics Illinois family flocked to Springfield for the first-ever Special Olympics Illinois Capitol Day. This was a day when we educated and thanked Gov. Bruce Rauner and our legislators for their support of Special Olympics Illinois.

This was a day when we came together to open minds and hearts for those of us with special needs.

We were divided into nine groups consisting of those of us who were Special Olympics athletes, family members, unified partners, Special Olympics staff and members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. One of the top members of leadership that we had the honor to visit was Gov. Bruce Rauner. Our Special Olympics family stood outside two large wooden doors that marked where Gov. Rauner’s office was located.

Near the front, Special Olympics Illinois President and CEO Dave Breen stood with Kristen McInerney, my friend from Willowbrook and fellow SEASPAR teammate. McInerney presented Gov. Rauner with a framed Special Olympics lottery ticket to thank him for the state’s support of Special Olympics.

Rauner took lots of selfies with us as we told him about how Special Olympics

impacts our lives.

We thanked our legislators for two pieces of legislation that have created additional funding for Special Olympics Illinois. One piece was the Special Olympics lottery ticket.

Since February 2015, $5.5 million in Special Olympics Lottery tickets have been sold.

This would not have been possible without many dedicated legislators who helped to carry the bill.

Take Sen. Mattie Hunter, for example, who was instrumental in helping to carry the lottery ticket bill to the Senate.

When my group met with Sen. Hunter, we thanked her for all the hard work that she did for this piece of legislation.

We educated Sen. Hunter about how Special Olympics has given us opportunities.

These are opportunities not just on the playing field but opportunities to make friends from across the state, to showcase our leadership such as at Capitol Day, and to advance our employability within the community.

For the first time, Special Olympics Illinois has an Income Tax Check-off on the Illinois Income Tax Schedule G. These funds will help to create more opportunities for all those involved in Special Olympics throughout Illinois.

Within my group, Woodridge police officer Daniel McIntyre devoted his time at Capitol Day in showing his support of Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run program.

In 2015, the Law Enforcement Torch Run program raised more than $4.1 million in support of Special Olympics.

At the end of a long day in the Capitol building, we had a reception at the Pasfield House Inn. This reception was sponsored by Special Olympics Illinois Board member John Penn’s Midwest Region of Laborers International Union of North America.

It was here at the reception where McIntyre told me about the amazing moment that Jack Klawitter had on the Senate floor. When Joliet Catholic Academy hosted East Suburban Catholic Conference rival Chicago Carmel a few weeks back, it pitted a pair of Illinois’ top players in a head to head clash.

With Carmel catcher Cooper Johnson the No. 1 player in the Class of 2016 by Prep Baseball Report in town to face No. 3 ranked Drake Fellows there were several Major League Baseball scouts around watching the two do battle.

The hype, however, does not faze the 6-foot, 5-inch, 215 pound Vanderbilt recruit.

“I am used to driving around the country and I am used to 100s of radar guns being behind there with the All-American game in San Diego and stuff,” Fellows said. “It is a fun experience I just don’t pay much attention to it right now. They have been around

since my sophomore year.

“They are trying to make an offer and try and make you not go to college. They will watch you sophomore and junior year and then senior year they will hit it hard because the end of the season leads into the draft.”

Even having another player of his caliber in the opponent’s lineup isn’t something he thinks too much of, however, he does take pride in winning the war the scouts came out to see.

“I just look at him as another bat in the lineup,” Fellows said. “I busted him inside and he couldn’t really do anything with the fastball. My fastball was getting up to around 94 (miles per hour), so he couldn’t do much against me.”

While facing other draftable classmates and having the pro scouts in the stands is old hat for Fellows, it is not the case for his Hillmen teammates.

With the retirement of longtime coach Denise Hadley at the end of the season, the Lockport badminton team wanted to go out strong in her final SouthWest Suburban Conference meet.

Strong does not begin to explain the dominance the Porters showed, winning all but one championship over the twoday event.

Lockport swept the doubles meet and won all but one of the singles events.

“We played hard today and that is what we get in the end,” said Haley Egelhof, who teamed with Jessica Miller to win No. 1 doubles.

“We came in wanting to go for the win and go for the sweep.”

With the success Lockport has had in the SWSC over the past few years, the players expect the rest of the league to be gunning for them.

“Knowing that everyone is out to get Lockport is pretty stressful,” Miller said. “We practice really hard and we play really good teams so we are used to the pressure.”

One of the teams trying to put pressure on the Porters is Joliet Central, who placed fifth in the meet with 23 points.

The duo of Alejandra Zavala and Danielle Morgan battled with Egelhof and Miller for the No. 1 doubles title.

“It was intense, especially playing a tough school like Lockport,” Zavala said about the match. “It was a great experience.

Last year wasn’t so great for us, so to fight for first and second, I am grateful we have gotten to that level.”

Morgan was also happy with the second-place finish.

“It was fun, I was really nervous,” she said. “I think we played a really good game and I am just happy we played that well with Lockport.”

Morgan said seeing better competition this season had the Steelmen ready to compete at the league tournament.

“The tournaments are really good practice for us and every Saturday in the season, we go to

This year, we played Lake Park and their team is a state qualifying team and we won our match and that was exciting.”

Joliet West placed a spot behind Central in the team standings with nine overall points.

The team of Rebecca Hoff and Vanessa Sanchez took second at No. 2 doubles – the furthest the duo has ever advanced at the league meet.

“Playing for first was a big deal

for us,” Sanchez said. “It is a very competitive sport and it is hard to keep up, so doing this in our last year is something we are really happy with.”

Hoff credits better communication this season to their success.

“I feel like we have grown a lot over the last four years. Before we came to conference and we would lose in the first round, but today we got second,” she said.

“It was really important to have the strong finish here because it has been disappointing in the past.”

Tibble returns to baseball to lead Tigers Former quarterback back on the diamond after concussions end football career

As a junior, Joliet West’s Alex Tibble led the Joliet West football team to the school’s first-ever IHSA playoff berth.

As a senior, however, his football season and career were cut short after suffering a fourth concussion.

Not willing to end his high school athletic career on the sidelines, Tibble traded in his shoulder pads and helmet for a bat and glove and returned to the Tigers’ baseball team after not playing the last two seasons.

“When I got hurt playing football, I was devastated because I love playing football,” Tibble said.

“When I first started it freshman year, it just clicked with me and that is why I gave up baseball for it. Personally now looking back, I wish I had played baseball the last two years, but you can’t change the past. I am just lucky I have this last year of baseball and I am making the most of it.

“Baseball is a whole different game.When you are playing football, each week you are preparing for 11 really big guys trying to hurt you.

In baseball, you are just preparing to hit pitches and chasing down fly balls in the outfield. I just come out here and play my heart out.”

Now that he is back patrolling centerfield, Tibble is looking to make it a home for a little longer.

“Obviously after the fourth concussion, football is out of the question,” he said. “This year is going well so far and I am just going to keep working at baseball and if it

goes well I will play maybe at (Joliet Junior College). That is what I am hoping.”

Tibble’s return to baseball wasn’t only good for him – it gave the rebuilding Tiger team another senior leader in the dugout.

“Alex has been a nice addition to the team,” coach John Karczewski said. “If you can take off two years and come back and start on varsity in our program, that is a testament.

We are young and it would have been nice to have him the last couple years. He missed a few things being away from the game for two years, but he will get them back. He is fast, he has a good arm and the way he is hitting the ball has really impressed me this year.

We have guys who hit all year long the past two years and aren’t hitting as good as he is.”

Tibble’s return is one of the few bright spots West (6-12-1) has had during a rebuilding season with a team that features 13 juniors.

“The game is so much faster at the varsity level than it is at the sophomore level, especially in our conference,” Karczewski said. “I look at the offseason preparation. We aren’t very big, we aren’t very strong and we haven’t done as much as we have needed to do in the offseason and it is really showing. We have to sew some things up. We need to play better defense, we need to hit in a more timely manner. I just want them playing hard. Hopefully it is an eye opener for next season because we start only one to two seniors and the rest are juniors and our sophomore group is doing well so at any time, jobs could be in jeopardy.” photo by mark gregory

Bolingbrook graduate Antonio Morrison was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts.

Bolingbrook alum Morrison drafted by Indianapolis As a senior in high school, Antonio Morrison was the heart and soul of a vaunted Bolingbrook defense before a late season injury forced him to watch from the sidelines as his Raiders defeated Loyola to claim the school’s firstever IHSA Class 8A state title.

Morrison suffered another injury, this time a career-threatening one, when he torn multiple ligaments in his left knee in the Birmingham Bowl at the end of his junior year at the University of Florida.

On April 30, Morrison again defied the odds, becoming the first Bolingbrook football player ever drafted into the National Football League.

The inside linebacker was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 4th

round, the 125th selection overall, the pick they acquired from Green Bay a round earlier.

With the 103 stops, Morrison became the first Florida player to record back-to-back 100-tackle seasons since Ed Robinson in 199293. He was Named a Butkus Award semifinalist and was a unanimous first team All-SEC selection his

senior year.

A captain for the Gators last season, Morrison was the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and SEC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 16 tackles against Ole Miss and was the SEC Defensive Player of the Week following the Gators’ game against Georgia.

He is the first area player drafted since Joliet Catholic’s Coby Fleener was also drafted by the Colts in the second round of the 2012 draft and the first Valley View School District draftee since Romeoville graduate Oliver Gibson was taken in the fourth round of the 1995 NFL Draft. Voss knows when scouts come out to see a player like Fellows, it can also have an impact on other players like Texas Tech bound junior KC Simonich.

“KC, for example, everyone is here and we made sure we snuck him in another round during batting practice in front of all those guys,” Voss said.

This season, Fellows is 5-0 on in five starts on the mound. He has an ERA of .575 and a 1.315 WHIP. Fellows has struck out 42 batters and walked 12, allowing 20 hits in 24.1 innings pitched. At the plate, the Hillmen clean-up hitter is batting .395 with 14 RBI

Voss just hopes Fellows doesn’t need to push for extra bases or anything else that may get him injured.

“As much as we welcome Drake’s bat in the lineup in 80-degree weather, you do get nervous about him running the bases and rolling around in the dirt because if he does what he usually does on the mound, one or two runs might win it,” he said.

If he stays healthy, the Hillmen know they have one of the state’s best arms to lead the team into the playoffs.

And when several teams in history have won with a pair of strong arms, JCA is just looking for a consistent No. 2.

“At the end of the day when the playoffs roll around, we have to find someone to go with Drake and anything can happen,” he said. “We need someone that we can play behind with the same confidence that we play behind Drake with.”

“Film critics like Andrew Davis who directed the classic film the Fugitive are often asked why they come to Chicago to film when they could film in L.A. where it is always 72 degrees.

The answer---because there are millions of interesting people in Chicago and 72 in L.A.,” quipped Frenzel. From the gospel-like

commentary from the Godfather to the infamous Risky Business, Frenzel showcased why so many film directors love to revisit town.

Along with Frenzel’s program, submissions from the Great Read Art Contest were on display.

More than 100 pieces of art were submitted. Overall winners were given a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card.

An area artist for 35 years, Mike Zimmer of Romeoville, entered his rendition of 12th street in Lockport as a beautiful oil painting which took home an award.

“I like the idea of combining the love of art and the library, it works

well and it was fun to participate,” said Zimmer.

Theresa Moutz, whose homeschooled son, Noah, participated, agreed. “It gives students more of an awareness of where they live and gives them a different avenue to learn about it,” said Moutz.

Actors from Lockport’s Limestone Theater also performed Illinois-based readings and patrons received books about Illinois.
