Annual golf outing supports Center Nearly 120 participants partook in the golf outing this year

The Spanish Community Center held its seventh annual golf outing May 18 to raise funds to

support its programming and services. Highlights at the event consisted of raffle drawings, lunch, dinner and a scramble golf.

“The best thing is that all of the money goes directly to the Spanish Center,” said Luke Antonsen, board member and former board president of Spanish Community Center. “Everything goes to the center to help with their social services.”

The green at Inwood Golf Course in Joliet drew a crowd of supporters. Nearly 120 participants partook in the golf outing this year.

“Every year, we’ve had so many people that come back each year now,” Antonsen said. “It generates obviously some new interest, but people enjoy it so much that they’re coming back each year. I think that has to do with promoting the center in general.”

The Spanish Community Center provides social service assistance to individuals throughout Will County. Through the intake process, those on staff look to identify forms of assistance to assist individuals in dealing with various barriers. The Spanish Community Center serves as a resource addressing concerns such as language barriers, healthcare needs, referrals and legal assistance.

“Right now, we’re going through a time where our funding is limited, especially given that the state budget is something that has been helping us,” said Veronica Gloria, executive director of Spanish Community Center. “With the current budget situation, we’re not really sure [what to expect], but the good thing is the community has really been coming together [to support the center.]”

“It’s really exciting to see that we have a really nice day and a really nice turnout to make sure that we keep having these programs,” Glo-

ria said.

Dave Shea, of Joliet, was one of the golfers preparing to hit the green.

“It’s for a great cause,” he said.

“The Spanish Community Center does so many great things for the area—from immigration to other things. It’s just a great cause.”

This year was Shea’s fifth time partaking in the golf outing.

Shea said he hopes that a day of golfing provides an opportunity “just to have fun with family and friends and have a good time for a good cause.”

Reuben Reyes, of Naperville, said he was looking forward to having a good time to support a great cause.

“It’s a beautiful day, nice turnout,” he said. “The last five years I’ve been here, we’ve been lucky.”

This year was Reyes’ fifth time attending the golf outing.

Reyes said the reason he con-

tinues to come out to support the Spanish Community Center is simple.

“The Spanish Center helps a lot of people,” he said.

Gloria said though the future is not clear, those on staff remain optimistic.

“There are times where we really worry about the future, but when we have events like these and we see that everyone’s here to have a good time and also support, it gives us the energy to keep doing what we’re doing,” Gloria said.

“Everyday we hear stories that are just very difficult to hear, so we can only imagine what it’s like to have to live through not knowing where going to live, not knowing [if] you’re going to have clothes,” Gloria said. “To know that everyday our staff is making a difference in people’s lives, is something that we see for thousands of people from across Will County.”

The Trinity Triumph 5K is chip-timed on a course certified by USA Track & Field.

Dig in and organize your gardening tools Here are some clever and quirky alternatives that may be new to you

Affix a few rows of tension-style broom racks to the inside and you’ve created the perfect garden tool closet.

It goes without saying that any job is easier if you have the right tools. It’s also important to take proper care of your tools. At this time of year, this especially relates to your gardening tools.

What makes working in your North 40 most enjoyable is not only having the right rakes, clippers and spades, but also having them organized and easily accessible – this applies to both storing and using them.

As you’re probably already familiar with the traditional pegboards and store-bought tool caddies, here are some clever and quirky alternatives that may be new to you:

KEEPING HAND TOOLS IN ORDER Find a rural-type mailbox large enough to house your smaller hand tools. This is a great way to keep your shears, trowels and claws from going missing. How about converting a hanging pocket shoe storage unit into one that holds your hand tools? Just nail the multi-pocket organizer to an interior wall to keep your small tools out of the elements and accessible.

Another idea is to convert the utensil basket of your discarded dishwasher into a small hand tool organizer – it not only contains your tools, but also can travel with you around your garden.

STORING LONG-HANDLED TOOLS Recycle a wooden pallet into a new storage space for your long-handled tools. By fastening the pallet flat against your garage or shed wall, shovels, hoes and edgers will easily slip behind the slats and stand upright, organized and accessible. Or try drilling handle-diameter holes into the lid of a 50-gallon resin trash can. The round container with tools at the ready fits perfectly in any out-of-the-way corner. Another

Former USF women’s basketball coach Quigley-Smith and staff head to Lewis University

How does a program in the Joliet area replace a coach with bloodlines to one of the top athletic families in Will County?

With another one, that’s how.

Lewis University announced welcomed Samantha QuigleySmith as the 13th head women’s basketball coach in school-history last week.

She replaces Kristen Gillespie, who accepted the head job at Illinois State University after only two seasons at Lewis.

Quigley comes to Lewis from the University of St. Francis, where she posted a record of 101-62 in five seasons on the bench.

Last year, the Saints posted a 34-2 record and were undefeated in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. St. Francis advanced to the NAIA Division II semifinals.

Quigley-Smith was named the CCAC Coach of the Year for a second-consecutive season.

She was also selected as the Illinois Basketball Coach Association Coach of the Year and was a WBCA/United States Marine Corps NAIA National Coach of the Year finalist.

“I am really excited to be here,” Quigley-Smith said. “I have to

thank my family, it wasn’t an easy decision the last couple weeks, but it is great to be here.

I have to thank St. Francis, who gave me my start at the ripe age of 23 years old. I was grateful to have that opportunity to coach and be a head coach at such a young age. I have to thank Lewis and the search committee. I know they had some really great candidates and to choose me, I am really lucky.

“After meeting with the search committee, I immediately felt like this was family and it felt right and the second time I came, just driving up to the university felt right.”

This year was not the first time Quigley-Smith considered applying for the Lewis position.

“When coach Gillespie took the position at Illinois State, I jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “When the position opened two years ago, it was something I thought long and hard about, but the timing wasn’t so great.

I felt like now was a good time and I was ready to accept the challenge.

“Not everyone goes to a crosstown rival, but the step up in division to NCAA Division II was big and to be able to be part of an athletic program that has been so successful.”

While she said she has no plans to leave Lewis in the near future, Quigley-Smith said that the idea that the last two Lewis coaches moved on to Division-I jobs was intriguing.

“I would be crazy to say that

highest level there is.”

That desire to some day coach at the Division I level is a reason St. Francis AD Dave Laketa knew Quigley-Smith would not be a Saint forever.

“We are grateful to Samantha for the work that she did to turn our women’s basketball program into one of the top-caliber programs at the NAIA level,” Laketa said in a statement. “It has been extremely fun to watch her develop over these past five years, culminating with this year’s undefeated regular-season record and a trip to the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament.

“I know that this was a very difficult decision for Samantha to make with her and her family’s ties to St. Francis, but one that I know will serve her well along her career path. We were glad to give Samantha her first head coaching opportunity and know that she will do well for

many years to come.”

Her ties to the community run deeper than just USF. Quigley-Smith was also a JCA legend, as she was the 2006 Chicago Sun-Times Female Athlete of the Year as a basketball, volleyball and softball standout.

She was a two-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association AllState First Team and Associated Press Class AA All-State Third Team selection in basketball.

She finished with 1,910 career points as an Angel.

She went on to play for Doug Bruno at DePaul, where she played from 2006-11. She left as No. 20 on the all-time scoring list with 1,273 and was third with 484 assists.

She was a two-time All-Big East selection and was named an Honorable Mention WBCA All-American in 2011 and a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award as a senior. The same sea-

son, Quigley Smith earned Capital One Academic All-District honors and was the recipient of the Big East Sportsmanship Award.

Quigley-Smith will not be coming to Lewis alone, as she looks to bring her entire USF staff to Lewis with her, including former Joliet Catholic boys coach and 1974 Lewis graduate Dan McCarthy.

“My intention is to bring everyone over and hopefully everything works with logistics and our graduate assistant getting some credits transferred over, but it looks like everything will work out,” she said. “Dan McCarthy was a huge part for our success and he is a big reason why I am the coach I am today, so I had to have him come over.”

The staff will inherit a team that advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fifthstraight season and is paced by 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Jessica Kelliher.

The Flyers will play at St. Francis in December.

Keeping a mortgage for the deduction is bad math DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are looking at buying a new home. We’ve been really blessed with our finances, and we’re at a point where we can pay cash for a new house and still have plenty of money in the bank.

Should we do this, or is it a better idea to get a mortgage for the tax deduction?

BRIAN DEAR BRIAN, I think the real question is this: Why wouldn’t you pay cash if you have the ability to do so? I would never advise someone to get, or keep, a mortgage just for the tax deduction, because these tax deductions are never 100 percent.

Let’s pretend you had a $200,000 mortgage at five percent interest.

That would be $10,000 a year in interest. If you take a $10,000 tax deduction and you’re in a 25 percent tax bracket, that would save you 25 percent of $10,000 on your tax bill — or $2,500. So, you would never send $10,000 to your mortgage company just to avoid sending $2,500 to the IRS. You don’t keep a mortgage just for the tax deduction. That’s trading a dollar for a quarter, and you don’t want to do that. Everybody thinks los-

ing the tax deduction is an awful thing, but you could give $10,000 extra to your church — something you don’t have to be in debt to do — and get the same tax write-off.

There are numerous positive aspects to staying out of debt.

One big thing it does is change your risk level. It gives you a level of peace and security you’ll never have when debt is hanging over your head. All that money that was going out the door to the bank can be used to build wealth and give like never before!

medical bills and I don’t have quite as much cash as usual on hand. My younger sister recently received a tax bill from the IRS for $30,000. Central addition wins 2017 CBC Merit Award 4-story limestone structure, built in collegial gothic style honors Joliet’s urban community The Joliet Central High School Student Center Addition won the 2017 Chicago Building Congress (CBC) Award in the category of New Construction Suburbs at the Merit Awards Gala held at the Chicago Marriot Downtown Chicago.

The Chicago Building Congress Merit Awards celebrates the collaborative effort required by the building process and the impact of that effort upon the community at large. Judging is based upon the distinctiveness

of design, quality of construction, impact upon the community, and the project’s safety record.

Co-chaired this year by Michael Fitzgerad of OKW Architects, and Steve Crowley of Graycor, the 2017 Merit Award Committee met in February to select finalists in each of the 9 categories.

Next, the Merit Award Jury entertained presentations by each of the 33 finalist project teams.

Assistant Superintendent Dr.

Ilandus Hampton and members of the Wight and Co. and Gilbane teams presented the project to the jury who then had the difficult decision-making process of selecting a single recipient for each Merit Award category.

Built in 1901, Joliet Central High School is a beloved historical landmark in the heart of downtown Joliet.

The four-story limestone structure, built in collegial gothic style, serves as a beacon of light for Joliet’s urban community.

Decades of alumni return to their alma mater with a sense of pride that is strengthened by the beauty of the many building additions made to the campus throughout the years to keep up with growing enrollment and modern academic needs.

The student center addition was no exception when it came to the design and ensuring that the historical integrity of the school was maintained. Since the existing building is on the National Register of Historic Places, connecting to it posed a unique challenge. The team had to be sensitive to the existing building’s character and historical significance, while physically connecting it to a new building.

“The district and community are very protective of the school and its architecture, but with input from a multitude of community and district stakeholders, the structural engineers and architects designed an airy, glassy galleria, bringing the existing exterior stone wall of the school into the interior,” said JTHS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl McCarthy.

“The galleria space links the existing building to the new

main entrance, kitchen, dining pavilion, student services area, credit union, and learning spaces. It also provides a common place for stairs and an elevator to connect to all levels of the school. In essence, the galleria is the gateway to the past, present, and future of the school.”

Also, considered in the design was the importance of building spaces that the community, as well as the student body, could use for special events. The open galleria and spacious dining pavilion are both offered to the school and community for special events, most recently hosting over 1,000 guests for a Kermes

Celebration that embraced the Latino culture and community.

This is just one of many community events that have been held within this majestic space.

“I am so extremely proud of this addition and all who contributed to this project,” said McCarthy. “With the vision of our Board of Education, Wight and Co., Gilbane Construction, our Central Archives Committee, and dedicated JTHS staff, the Central Student Center Addition has unified generations of students, both past and present, and is truly a beacon of light for our community.”
