West names Mr. & Miss Alpha Omega Joliet West High School seniors Jack Pierson and Catherine Mae Mastin were named Mr. and Miss Alpha Omega for the 2017-2018 school year at the Senior Awards Ceremony held on May 16.

Sponsored by the yearbook, the annual Mr. and Miss Alpha Omega contest is an honored and long-standing JTHS tradition that recognizes the best all-around Joliet West senior boy and girl. Each winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will speak at the graduation ceremony.

The selection process begins by creating a list of seniors who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. Next, faculty members select the finalists from the list using the criteria of appearance and poise, personality, activities, and community service. Finally, a panel of teachers and community members interviews the finalists.

Prior to the interview and throughout the year, the finalists serve as ambassadors to the school and community.

They have spoken with neighborhood organizations, religious communities, service clubs and tutored at Mt. Carmel Church and Lively Hope Church on a weekly basis.

“All of our finalists have lived up to the title of ‘Student Ambassador’ and represented Joliet West and the District without hesitation and with great pride,” said JTHS Community & Alumni Relations Director Kristine Schlismann.

Jack Pierson is the son of Jeff and Lisa Pierson. He is a member of NHS and on the golf team, where has served as the captain for two years. Jack is an Illinois State Scholar, an AP Scholar with Honor, and an ACT Pacesetter. In addition, he has been recognized as part of an IHSA Varsity Golf All-Academic Team and Varsity Golf All Conference Honors. Jack has taken eight AP courses. Jack will attend the University of Alabama where he has been awarded an Alumni Heritage Scholarship, an Alumni Scholar Award, a University of Alabama Housing Award, a University of Alabama Scholar Scholarship, and an Engineering Leadership Scholarship.

Mae Mastin is the daughter of Abigail and William Mastin.

She is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and serves as a student mentor in the New Tiger Club. Mae has many leadership roles.

She serves on the executive board of NHS as the in-school communicator. She serves as the president of Students of Service, president of the Garden Club, and co-president of the Health and Medicine/Human Services Academy Roundtable.

Mae is a recipient of the Good Citizen Award sponsored by the Joliet DAR, a Voice of Democracy winner for the Calgary Post, and an ambassador to the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference. She is an ACT pacesetter, an Illinois State Scholar, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Mae has taken 11 Advanced Placement courses. She will attend either the University of St. Francis or Northwestern University in the fall where she will double major in biology and Spanish.

The Mr. Alpha Omega first runner-up was Carlos Cruz and second runner-up was James Papandria. The Miss Alpha Omega first runner-up was Madasen Kasprisin and second runner-up was Jessica Newby. The first runners-up receive a $500 scholarship and the second runners-up receive a $250 scholarship.

Additional Mr. Alpha Omega finalists included Andre Biasella, Zachary Boeringa, Anthony Contos, Jake Heppner, Joseph Keigher, Joseph Talarico, and Jason Vaccarella.

Additional Miss Alpha Omega finalists included Natalie Alvarado, Cheyenne Angus, Madeline Blauuw, Kayli Glidic, Alfreda Hogan, Jenny Koerner, Amanda Moldovan, Anna Nguyen, Kendra Paez, and Emma Regal.

Property restorations lauded by council

Owners at four historic properties in Joliet have had their hard work noted by members of the city council.

On May 15, the city issued proclamations in celebration of the four properties. Councilwoman Jan Quillman read the proclamations to the public during the regular meeting of the council.

The owners of the sites were awarded honors by the city council and the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission for their preservation efforts.

The following properties were honored: Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus 604 N. Raynor “In celebration of preservation month in the city of Joliet, the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission wants to recognize the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus for their front façade restoration of the Neoclassical Style cathedral,” Quillman said.

“The cathedral has helped preserve the exterior of this unique structure by carefully selecting Indiana limestone cladding for the monumental front pillars and portico to match the limestone in the main block of the church.”

The cathedral was built in 1954 to serve as the mother church for the Roman Catholic Joliet Diocese.

Featuring a 190-foot bell tower, the cathedral is a prominent landmark on the Joliet skyline.

1924 Sears Model and Craftsman bungalow 318 S. Midland The owners of this home restored the original floors and trim, retained original fixtures, and installed period-appropriate fixtures and cabinetry.

Homeowner Lindsey Daniels said she felt emotional at the award, after years of hard work to restore the home.

“We’ve lived in this home for 10 years,” Daniel’s said. “It’s very personal to me, this has been my life for 10 years. This is home. It’s been an honor to live here in Joliet and to help bring the history back into this home and to make it a part of the Joliet landscape once again.”

MyGrain Brewing Company Union Station The owners of the new restaurant and brewery housed inside Union Station downtown were hon-

ored for their adaptive use of the historic site.

The Beaux Arts style train station and depot was designed by Jarvis Hunt and completed in 1912 and was listed on the national register of historic places in 1978. Union Station has long served as a transportation hub for the city with leasable space inside.

“MyGrain Brewing has helped to preserve the first floor of the historic Joliet Union Station through a complete renovation and adaptive reuse of the building and property, including preservation of the facade, windows, doors, and columns. The completed renovation maintains the historical integrity of both the interior and exterior while providing a unique dining experience,” Quillman said. “Having been there, you really need to go. The food is fabulous as well as the beer.”

The interior renovation took two years.

Sehring Mansion 310 Bridge St. The owners were honored for exterior preservation of the castellated Romanesque style mansion.

The mansion was built between 1887 and 1889 for Fred Sehring, owner of a brewery adjacent to the property. The building was designed by Hugo F. Boehme.

“The property owners acquired the mansion in 2016 and have helped preserve the exterior of this unique structure by salvaging the front doors, tuck pointing the limestone facade, restoring the windows, and unearthing the tunnels on the property,” Quillman said. “These efforts are part of a plan to create viable commercial space while preserving the history of this property.”

This was the 13th year for the awards.

The honors coincide with Historic Preservation Month, sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a non-profit, privately funded organization that works to save historic places and sites in the country.

Preserve offers kids programs for summer Most programs are free With the school year rapidly coming to a close, it probably won’t be long until your kids’ sheer joy at summer freedom switches over to daily refrains of “I’m bored.”

Kids can beat the summer boredom blues by taking advantage of programs coming up at the Forest Preserve District’s various preserves and visitor centers.

Whether kids are into exploring the outdoors, learning about animals and wildlife or building with blocks and other materials, the District’s wide range of programming has something to keep them occupied during the long summer break. And best of all, most of the programs are free.

Some programs are offered regularly throughout the summer and participants can attend as their schedule allows.

For example, the “Discovery Isle” program at Isle a la Cache Museum

Here’s a look at some of the other kid-friendly programs on the summer schedule.

Make sure to check the event calendar on the District’s website for the complete lineup of available programs and events, or to register. Please note that advance registration is required for some programs.

RECURRING PROGRAMS “LEGO GONE WILD”

is offered every Wednesday afternoon from 1-3 p.m., and registration is not required.

Kids explore different topics at each session, said Chris Gutmann, facility supervisor at Isle a la Cache.

“One week children can be looking at live aquatic insects, and the next they’re making a craft,” he explained.

The District also has a variety of one-time programs on tap at different times of the week and day.

The “Bats! Bats!! Bats!�” program at Hammel Woods – Route 59 Access is a nighttime program set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, that will explore these nocturnal mammals, giving people an up-close look with educational

displays, interactive stations and games, said Tina Riley, facility supervisor at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center.

“Hammel Woods is home to many bats that participants are likely to see as night falls and they start leaving their roosts to feed,” Riley said. “It makes for the perfect ending to a really terrific program.”

Payton has been riding horses for three years and said she wanted a way to give back to the horses.

W.B.O. Principal Larry Piatek said the school is proud of Payton for her work on the project and for her exceptional presentation.

“We’re very proud of her,” Piatek said. “It wasn’t just her business proposal, which was great, but it was also her energy and enthusiasm that impressed the judges.”

“Payton put a tremendous amount of work and forethought into her product idea and development,” said Co-Sponsor of the W.B.O. Entrepreneur Club Christopher Giugler. “That, plus the charisma and passion she brought to her pitch made her stand out from the crowd.”

“Payton is a wonderful young lady,” said the club’s other Co-Sponsor Ann Provencher. “Her zest and exuberance will take her far in life.”

The $100 Payton’s business received will be put into W.B.O.’s Entrepreneur Club for future project development.

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee began the Entrepreneurship Club in 2011 as a way to engage middle

school students with entrepreneurial thought.

Now in its sixth year, the Young Entrepreneur EXPO hosted 86 students from Troy, Gompers, Washington, Hufford, Dirksen, Rockdale, Channahon, and the Cathedral of St. Raymond schools, who showcased the businesses they developed over the year. The EXPO was held at the University of St. Francis.

According to Will-Henn, Troy advanced to finals by defeating Dirksen and Washington, and Hufford advanced to finals by defeating Richland and Gompers.

TMS 8th grader Daniel Schalk was the overall individual toss-up high scorer.

In the final match between Troy and Hufford, Troy was down by 20, but came back and was able to pull ahead. Hufford then came back, and the two were tied at the end

Future engineers can put their building skills to the test during this program, which lets kids combine building with their favorite blocks along with exploring the outdoors. Children ages 6 or older can explore hidden habitats with a naturalist and then brainstorm how to use LEGO bricks to recreate those habitats. Angel investor chooses William B. Orenic student William B. Orenic Intermediate School sixth grader Payton Fraser got a big surprise during a recent school lunch period when Lewis University Director of School Partnerships Larry Wiers surprised her with a check for $100.

The check was from a secret angel investor who was impressed by a business proposal Payton presented at the 2018 Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s recent Young Entrepreneur EXPO. Payton was one of the W.B.O. Intermediate School Entrepreneurship Club’s members who presented her project at the EXPO. Her business, Sunnyside Horse Treats, makes and sells reward treats made from oats, molasses, unsweetened applesauce and flour. The treats are baked for a longer shelf life and sold to those who want to give their horses healthful treats for jobs well done.

“I wanted to create a delicious treat so horses can feel rewarded for doing the right thing,” Payton

Troy Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team wins regional competition The Troy Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team recently won the 2017/2018 Region 7 Class AA Regional Scholastic Bowl Competition, which was held this year at Troy Middle School.

“We ended our season with a winning record, a well-trained and energetic JV team ready for battle next year and an incredible experience in winning the first Scholastic

of the regular match, which threw the match into a sudden death tie breaker.

The first team to correctly answer 2 toss-ups would be declared the winner. Troy jumped to a fast 1-0 lead with the first question. The next two had Hufford buzz in with incorrect answers that Troy was not able to answer, either. Will-Henn said the crowd was on the edge of their seats.

The fourth question had Hufford buzz in, but answer incorrectly.

Amy Gusewelle was unsuccessfully hitting her buzzer and finally announced, “Buzz-Buzz, Buzz-Buzz,” and was acknowledged by the moderator and responded with the correct answer.

The winning answer was, Illinoisborn journalist Megyn Kelly, to the question of the political commentator who interviewed Russia’s Vladimir Putin for her Sunday night show.

O’Hare Airport: Place to reunite with ones you love

BY MARNI PYKE OF THE DAILY HERALD It took just seven years for O’Hare International Airport to rise from an unassuming, former aircraft factory to the world’s busiest airport in 1962.

Since then, the Midwest aviation hub has witnessed history and sparked an economic boom in the region; but for many across Illinois, it’s the place to reunite with the ones you love best.

“Creating O’Hare was a marvelously foresighted decision by the city of Chicago,” aviation expert Joseph Schwieterman said.

Chicago leaders chose Orchard Field, where the Douglas Aircraft Co. was building fighter planes, as the site for a second airport to relieve busy Midway International Airport in 1945.

The facility got its name in 1949 from heroic World War II pilot Edward “Butch” O’Hare and opened for commercial traffic in 1955. The main terminal building and a parking lot were completed in 1961 and in 1963 President John F. Kennedy dedicated the airport.

“There is no other airport in the world which serves so many people and so many planes,” Kennedy said.

O’Hare can be credited with generating a commercial boom in northwest Chicago and the surrounding suburbs that includes industrial parks, hotels and restaurants, freight operations and transportation services.

An estimated 450,000 jobs in the region are linked to O’Hare and its economic impact is $38 billion, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

An extension of Route 390/Elgin-O’Hare Expressway to the airport and a ring road (I-490) on its western edge are projected to create up to 65,000 new direct and indirect jobs in the region.

O’Hare ranks as the country’s second busiest airport, with 867,635 arrivals and departures in 2016, compared to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with 898,356.

But along with being a financial and transportation asset, O’Hare has an emotional connection with Illinoisans.

Over the years, the airport has witnessed heartbreak as when American Airlines Flight 191 crashed minutes after takeoff near Des Plaines in 1979.

It’s seen emotional farewells as soldiers deployed to Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, and joyful reunions as they returned.

And in January 2017, it saw protests over a travel ban enacted by the White

House on seven predominantly Muslim nations.

Famous fliers have taxied on the tarmac from President Barack Obama aboard Air Force One to sports teams raising trophies such as the 1985 Chicago Bears, 2005 White Sox, 2013 Blackhawks and 2016 Chicago Cubs.

Back in 1963, Kennedy hoped the government and airlines, “will continue to work as hard as they can to make sure that the noise from these jets which take us in and out do not disturb the lives of ... people whose homes are in the immediate area.”

His words were prescient as noise is the crux of the love-hate relationship neighborhoods around O’Hare have had with the behemoth. Neighbors appreciate the fact that the airport creates jobs, but loathe the din of jets over their homes. Since 1995, more than 10,900 homes have been soundproofed but concerns about noise continue to date.

The airport was a trendsetter over the years with the iconic steel and glass of Terminal 1 designed by Helmut Jahn and the transcendent “Sky’s the Limit” light sculpture between Concourses B and C. Other unique features include a soothing hydroponic garden, a replica of a World War II fighter plane and a yoga room.

“When O’Hare opened it was rivaled only by JFK (International Airport in New York) as an aviation showpiece that pointed the way to the future,” said Schwieterman, a DePaul University professor, “(with) the double-deck roadway, multiple-terminal design, the room for expansion in the footprint.”

In its most recent metamorphosis,

O’Hare is shifting to a parallel runway system instead of relying on diagonals.

The sixth and final parallel is scheduled to be completed in fall 2020.

As its next act, the city of Chicago is pursuing an O’Hare 21 plan. Elements include “a new global terminal, more gate frontage, more space for passenger amenities and other improvements to increase efficiency of growing airport operations,” CDA Communications Deputy Commissioner Lauren Huffman said.

“Aging terminals will be redeveloped and a new global terminal will double O’Hare’s capacity for serving international passengers, allowing arriving international passengers to exit faster and connect to other flights with greater ease.”

The plan also includes three new or redeveloped hotels and additional gates.

“Getting around the airport will be faster, more convenient and efficient.

Customer service will be improved with new technology, amenities and more space to relax,” Huffman said. “Over the next decade, these investments will ensure that O’Hare is equipped for growth and to maintain its status as a top destination and choice hub for passengers around the world.”

Center receives $75K grant to expand resources Will County Children’s Advocacy Center receives $75,00 grant to expand resources for victims of child trafficking, child porn Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is pleased to announce that the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center has been awarded a $75,000 federal grant to expand resources for the victims of child pornography and child sex trafficking.

The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, established by State’s Attorney Glasgow in1995, was one of 34 CAC’s across the nation to receive a grant from the National Children’s Alliance to expand resources and services.

The grant will fund initiatives to enhance the countywide response to child sexual exploitation by creating a local Child Pornography and Exploitation Coalition; expanding law enforcement’s acces-

sibility to the Children’s Advocacy Center and its services; and developing a public service campaign to raise awareness about child sexual exploitation.

In addition, the grant will fund the hiring of a specially trained child sexual exploitation and advocacy coordinator to handle these cases. And it will enable the center to create a specialized mentoring program that provides support and guidance to the victims in child pornography cases.

State’s Attorney Glasgow and the Children’s Advocacy Center already are partnering with the Plainfield Junior Women’s Club to coordinate a public awareness about child sex trafficking in our region.

“This federal grant will provide additional funding to dramatically expand the critical services the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center provides,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “Our goal is always to provide hope, healing, and justice for sexually abused children.”

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center as a 501-(c)-3 charitable organization in 1995 to vastly improve investigations into cases involving the sexual abuse of children.

Today, when children make outcries of sexual abuse, they are brought to the center, where trained and compassionate forensic interviewers obtain accurate statements in a neutral, non-suggestive and child-friendly environment. Interviews recorded at the Children’s Advocacy Center have been used in the successful prosecution of thousands of child predators over the last two decades.

June Mobile Workshop Center schedule released Workforce Services Division of Will County has announced the Mobile Workforce Center’s June schedule. MWC has stops in six communities.

The mobile unit travels throughout Will County to help residents with resume development, cover letters and job applications. The workforce center contains 11 computer stations, internet access, and offers keyboarding lessons, as well as resume and job search assistance using online listings including jobs4people.org and Illinois workNet. The Mobile Workforce Center will be at Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff, Bolingbrook, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays.

The unit will be at University Park Village Hall, 698 Burnham Drive, in University Park, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays.

The name Pat Sullivan is one any local sports fan knows very well.

They know about his ties to the University of St. Francis and see his name on the side of the building that is now called the “Pat Sullivan Center” on the Saints’ campus.

What people may not realize is that it was at another local university that it all started for the man they call Sully.

As an athlete at Lewis, Sullivan was a baseball team captain who earned District 20 All-State accolades, and had an 11-2 career record on the mound with a batting average better than .400.

He was a member of the first Lewis team to participate in the NAIA national tournament in 1962.

The Flyers’ 1965 valedictorian, Sullivan also played basketball for Lewis.

Sullivan’s time at Lewis was recently recognized by the Great Lakes Valley Conference as he was awarded the 2018 Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction.

He was presented the award at the Enterprise Rent-A-Car GLVC Spring Awards Reception in St. Louis on May 22.

“I am very, very honored and I am happy for Lewis that out of the 16 schools in the conference, someone from Lewis gets this honor. I have a great regard for Lewis,” Sullivan said. “I always felt when I was at St. Francis that there was just a great relationship between Lewis and St. Francis.

We all knew each other and all respected each other.

“You know you will be forgotten, but it is nice when you are old and some people still remember that you did some things OK every now and then.”

Sullivan said his admiration for the Flyers did not stop upon his graduation.

“I think Lewis is an extraordinary program with John Planek running it. I don’t think people know how successful they are in all sports.” Sullivan said. “The competition level in that conference is, in my mind, very similar to the lower D-I conferences.

You will see a lot of people in the lower D-I levels will not schedule Lewis unless it is in games that will not count because they know how good Lewis is.

“If you are staying in the area and are going to play D-II, Lewis is your only option, but it is a great option – not only athletically, academically too.”

Local athletes earn honors at St. Francis University of St. Francis’ Alex Catalano (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and Kayla Garritson (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) have both been named NAIA ScholarAthletes.

This is the second career award for Catalano who competed in each of USF’s seven events this season. She averaged a team-best 83.46 strokes per round and shot the lowest round of her career, a 75, at the Holy Cross College Fall Invite on August 28, 2017.

Garritson takes home the first NAIA Scholar-Athlete award of her career. She played in three tournaments for the Saints in 2017-18 and finished fourth on the squad with an 89.00 scoring average. The junior carded a season-best 83 on day two of the Davenport University Battle in Belmont.

The Saints rounded out their season with a third-place showing at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, their best finish since 2015.

USF had four golfers place between eighth and 13th, including Catalano (eighth, 171) and Garritson (T-13th, 173).

• The NAIA and the College

Sports Information Directors of America have honored University of St. Francis tennis student-athletes for their academic accomplishments.

Merle Schlaeger (Hanau, Germany) highlights the list as a FirstTeam Google Cloud College Division Academic All-District honoree and a NAIA Scholar-Athlete selection. Eva Lopez (Zaragoza, Spain), Lucas Navarro (Valencia, Spain/ Cumbres School) and Mike Hasler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) were also named NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

This is the first academic alldistrict and NAIA Scholar-Athlete honor for Schlaeger, a management major who was also named USF’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year at this year’s Bernie Awards.

On the court, Schlaeger was one of the Saints’ top players, totaling 13 singles victories and eight doubles wins. In February, she came back to upset the No. 9-ranked singles player in the nation 5-7, 6-0, 10-8 in USF’s loss to No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan University.

Lopez, a communication & media arts major, takes home her second NAIA Scholar-Athlete award

in as many years. The senior from Spain led the Saints in both singles (17) and doubles (16) wins this season.

She was also named to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Team in doubles. Lopez wrapped up her career as a Saint with a 62-40 singles record and a 60-39 doubles mark.

Navarro, an international business major, also earned his second NAIA Scholar-Athlete award.

The senior led the Saints in doubles victories this year with 14 and went 10-7 at No. 1. He added an 11-5 mark in singles action.

Navarro finished his four-year career at USF with 58 total wins (25 singles and 33 doubles).

Hasler was named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete for the first time. He was the CCAC Player of the Week on April 16 after earning a pair of wins in USF’s 6-3 victory over Judson.

Hasler had 24 total victories this year, including 13 in singles play.

The Google Cloud Academic AllDistrict Program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the court and in the classroom.

ICON FROM PAGE 7 went on post more than 500 coaching victories, leading his team to first- or second-place finishes in the CCAC 15 times in 18 years while also advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in 1994 and 1996.

His teams also graduated 172 graduating seniors from the basketball teams he coached.

He has been inducted into seven different halls of fame at every level of competition and was named coach of the year on multiple occasions from the NAIA, Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and at the high school level.

His laurels also extend to administrative duties, as he was named NAIA Great Lakes Region Athletics Administrator of the Year (1999), CCAC Administrator of the Year (1998-99), NAIA District 20 Athletic Administrator of the Year twice (1987-88, 1988-89), and the Jaycee Educator of the Year for Will County (1971).

He was part of Community Leaders of America in 1972 and later chosen as the Citizen of the Year for the Irish American Society of Will County in March of 1995.

The Shorewood, Ill., native was named Who’s Who four times by various organizations, including American College and University Students (1965), Strathmore (1999), Empire (2005), and Madison where he was chosen as Member of the Year (2008). Twice he was honored with an alumni award from his high school, Joliet Catholic, as Alumnus of the Year in 1981 and with the Alumni Athletic Achievement Award in 1990.

All that factors into his recent recognition.

The Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction is an honor that extends beyond one’s collegiate career.

It is presented to an individual that displays academic excellence, athletic ability and achievement, character and leadership, while serving their institutions with personal distinction since their graduation, and making postgraduate public or community service contributions to athletics at any level.

It is named in remembrance of Dr. Charles Bertram, who served as a professor and faculty athletic representative at Southern Indiana and is a former president of the GLVC. He contributed a great deal of time, energy and effort to the league’s success and was instrumental in Conference opera-

Sullivan was nominated by Lewis athletics director Dr. John Planek and women’s basketball head coach Samantha Quigley Smith and recommended as this year’s honoree by the GLVC Awards Committee, based on his service to Lewis, the league, and his community.

“As a Lewis alum, Pat Sullivan has dedicated his life to educational institutions especially institutions of higher education. He has made a tremendous impact with his extraordinary focus on his players success on the court and off,” Planek said. “He has been a beacon of excellence in the profession and his inspired a great number of past players to enter the coaching ranks. He is truly deserving of this honor.”

Quigley Smith and her family have been around Sullivan for most of her life.

“I have known Sully for so long,” she said. “My late father played for him, my step dad played for him, my husband played for him, so I have just known him for years. The people who have been around him talk mostly of his passion — and it is not just coaching. It is teaching and being around people.

“He reminds me of Gordie (Gillespie) in the sense that when you talk to him, you feel like you are the most important person in the whole world. It is a very deserving award.”

Even before Sullivan was a fixture in the local sports world, it was Gillespie who coached at Lewis then St. Francis and Sul-

livan said those were his best memories of his days as a Flyer.

“How blessed all of us were to have played for Gordie,” he said.

“If you look at that tree and look at all the men who played for Gordie that went into the coaching profession. That is by far, the most cherished memory I have.

“I traveled the country for eight years for MacGregor Sports Education directing basketball clinics and got to know John Wooden and Bob Knight and Dean Smith, but then I would come back to Lewis and I knew we had a guy there that was as good as them and better than most.”

Sullivan is now an author and motivational speaker with previous engagements at IBM and Nike, as well as, area businesses and professional associations in

Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois.

He has also traveled abroad to speak at basketball camps and clinics in Belgium, Greece, and Ireland, including the national Greek Coaches Association Clinic (2003), and does the same at USA Basketball Coaching Clinics.

Before his retirement in 2010, Sullivan spent 34 years at the University of St. Francis in various roles as coach, administrator, and executive.

Before his stint at St. Francis, he was the assistant principal, college guidance counselor, and varsity basketball coach at Providence Catholic High School from 1965-76, and also worked and directed multiple basketball camps throughout the years for the Milwaukee Bucks and MacGregor Sports Center.

In addition, I make $70,000 a year and have the equivalent of six months of expenses set aside for emergencies.

Should I save up to pay cash for a house, or is mortgage debt okay? I’d like to keep the price of a new home between $200,000 and $225,000.

Since I currently live in a nice apartment, I think I can save about $20,000 a year. What do you think?

KATHRYN DEAR KATHRYN, It sounds like you’re in great financial shape. Congratula-

tions on becoming debt-free!

Let’s take a look at both scenarios. If you can save $20,000 a year, that means you’re about 10 years away from a nice, paid-for home, and you’re still debt-free.

That’s one option. At the same time, I don’t yell at people for taking out a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage, where the payments are no more than 25 percent of their monthly take home pay.

In this situation, you could save like crazy for a couple of years and make a big down payment on a home in the price range you’re talking about.

Then, you could pay off that house in just 15 years.

I honestly don’t have a prob-

lem with either solution, Kathryn, but think about this.

Wouldn’t it be great to have your own home, and still be completely debt-free, at 40? It’s something to think about!
