New pavilion planned for Rt. 66 Stadium Concrete slab, tent to be replaced

The Joliet Slammers opened the season last week with a loss. But work at the newly renamed Route 66 Stadium downtown is shaping up to be a win for the city of Joliet.

On May 14, Public Assets Manager Mike Eulitz gave an update to the stadium committee on plans to build a pavilion in left field at the stadium, filling the space currently occupied by a concrete slab that holds picnic tables. The structure would be similar to pavilions seen at local parks, and members from the park district would help in the process.

“We are working in conjunction with the park district, and the park district obviously puts these up all the time,” Eulitz said. “We have entered into a partnership with them.”

The city will build the pavilion themselves, saving on labor costs.

The structure is expected to be about 30 feet by 60 feet.

The city has received two quotes and is seeking a third.

The pavilion would provide some flexibility for the park, allowing larger events even outside of baseball season.

“We would be using this for a lot of pre-game, post-game parties, the IHSA picnic,” Eulitz said. “It can be used well into October or

November… We’re looking into a permenant structure, the tent that was out there before had blown away and was damaged.”

The stadium houses the Joliet Slammers and the University of St. Francis baseball team, but the city has been working to expand uses, hosting IHSA events, soccer and lacrosse tournaments, and other special events.

Eulitz said the funds are available to get the pavilion built this year.

“We saved about $40,000 in our carpeting this year. For this year’s budget, we do have funding available for this,” Eulitz said. “I’m sure we could knock it out before the year is over.”

Meanwhile, rehab at the stadium is continuing, even as the Slammers season kicks off.

Visitors have seen some marked changes this year, most notably, the new $1.6 million artificial field turf.

“The project is coming along very well, there have actually been numerous games already,” said Director of Public Works Jim Trizna. “The field, itself, was done about three weeks ago. The wall pads were going up last week, they had some punch list items.”

Trizna said there are still some landscape items and exterior fencing to be completed, but the majority of the work looks good.

“Generally, we’re about done with the project,” he noted.

The concept plan for the overhaul of the facility was unveiled last fall.

Cops go to new heights to raise funds Annual event benefits Special Olympics

Police officers in Shorewood took to the the roof last week, raising cash for a good cause.

On Friday, May 18, police officers across the state of Illinois took to the rooftops of nearly 300 Dunkin’ Donuts locations to support the Special Olympics, including in Shorewood on Route 59.

It was the 16th anniversary of the Dunkin’ Donuts Cop on a Rooftop event, benefitting the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois.

Special Olympics athletes and their families, and representatives from Chicago’s major sports teams were among the special guests

who joined the law enforcement officers across the state.

Dunkin’ Donuts also donated $15,000 to the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run. For officers in Shorewood, it’s a fun annual event that lets them interact with the public.

“My favorite part is when the athletes come out, we have a

couple of resident athletes,” said Police Chief Aaron G. Klima, who took the 5 a.m. shift on the rooftop just north of the Black Road and Route 59 intersection.

Visitors were able to purchase torch run travel mugs, hats, and tees to benefit the Torch Run. Organizers said the event is important because it puts the ath-

Shorewood man gets 36 years for sexual assault of young girl Thomas Holley of Shorewood pleaded guilty in January to one count of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that a 60-year-old Shorewood man was sentenced May 17 to 36 years in prison for the repeated sexual assault of a young girl who would visit his home.

Thomas Holley pleaded guilty in January to one count of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class X Felony, and one count of Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class 1 Felony. The girl was 8 years old when Holley began abusing her.

Circuit Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes handed down the sentence.

The brave young girl told a friend about the abuse in 2015 and then made an outcry to her school social worker and her parents. She was interviewed at the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, where she gave a detailed recorded state-

ment of her abuse at the defendant’s hands and subsequently received counseling services and professional support during the prosecution of the criminal case.

During the execution of a search warrant at Holley’s home, police found cameras, computers, and portable hard drives that were used to record and store digital files of the defendant assaulting the child.

“This truly is one of the most horrific cases of child sexual abuse we have prosecuted in many years,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said.

“Thomas Holley is a dangerously cruel predator who stole this brave little girl’s innocence. He also completely violated the trust of family members who had no idea of his vicious depravity.”

He continued: “It took tremendous courage for this girl to come forward and tell the truth about

the abuse she suffered at his inimical hands. Because of her bravery, Thomas Holley will spend what should be the rest of his life in prison where he can never harm another innocent child.”

The State’s Attorney commended his prosecutor, Kelly Tebo, for securing this sentence, as well as his staff from the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and his Victim Witness Services Division for their compassion and sensitivity in guiding this survivor and her family through the criminal justice process.

The child and her family also relied on the services of Kiwi, a therapy/facility dog in State’s Attorney Glasgow’s Paws 4 Kids pet therapy program, who was available to comfort them throughout the process.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s prosecutors also assisted in this case, retrieving a video from his computers depicting the sexual abuse.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.

The annual intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects aim to raise money and gain public awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois.

The run has raised more than $47 million during its 32 years in existence, while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments.

Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit organization offering year-round training and competition in 18 sports for more than 23,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and nearly 20,000 Young Athletes ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities.

and guests to explore the way in which we share landscapes both physically and artistically,” said Tina Riley, facility supervisor at Four Rivers. “The multidisciplinary experience will allow visitors to watch, listen or participate in a wide variety of musical, visual and performing arts in a fresh way.”

Artistic displays will include: folksinger Anna Stange, storyteller Oba William King, poetry collective Atrocious Poets, and rock balancing artist Matt Denault, as well as painters, photographers, a bonsai sculptor and a silverpoint artist. Exhibits and activities will be ongoing.

WWII caused changes to way of life, economy in IL Thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state

BY ANDY KRAVETZ OF THE JOURNAL STAR Washington, Illinois, resident Mary Kerr said the war caused everyone to sacrifice.

“When we went into Iraq in 2001, there was no difference in my life because we went to war. But then, everyone was affected; from Victory Gardens to rationing of items to the draft, everyone was in,” she said.

Mothers saved tin cans and foil. Life went on, she said, but it was different.

“We went on with the churches and the schools, but it wasn’t the same. The Boy Scouts went on but they had paper drives,” Kerr said. “Nothing was the same as it was before Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor.”

THOUSANDS ENLISTED FROM ILLINOIS When war was declared in December 1941, thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state either en route to or arriving at training stations.

The U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes had opened prior to World War I as a recruit training center, but by the early 1930s enrollment had slowed. World War II boosted the population at the station from 6,000 to 68,000, according to the Navy. In all, about 1 million sailors trained at the facility in North Chicago until the war ended in 1945.

Thousands of others, including many World War I veterans, flocked to the Illinois State Militia, also known as the Reserve Militia, where they agreed to serve for two years. They stood watch over bridges, railroads and other transit centers. When the war ended, hundreds were activated to serve as shuttle drivers in Chicago as the large number of GIs returning overwhelmed buses and trains, according the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

By the end of 1945, Illinois had registered 1,954,674 men between the ages of 18 and 38 at 361 separate local draft boards. Of these, 629,516 were called to serve. An additional 328,338 enlisted

of their own accord bringing the total number of men from Illinois entering the services to 957,854.

The number of Illinois women joining the military during the war was 13,587.

Counting those who already were in the military and those whose National Guard units were activated, Illinois supplied the U.S. armed forces with nearly 1 million of its citizens during the course of the war.

From Dec. 7, 1941, through Sept. 2, 1945, 17,521 Illinois servicemen and women were killed in combat or later died of wounds or injuries sustained in battle.

CATERPILLAR’S ROLE In Peoria, production of earth-moving equipment made by Caterpillar Inc. had already picked up in pace due to the federal Lend-Lease program, supplying goods and war material to Allied countries. Caterpillar tractors were already being used by the Allies in the early stages of World War II, according to Journal Star archives. But once the United States entered the war, production escalated. Bulldozers were vital to the war effort as they allowed creation of air fields and the cleanup of debris after battle.

Central Illinois factories geared up for greater production when the United States entered the war. The Defense Department initially asked for a variety of equipment from Caterpillar, including smaller items such as transmissions for tanks and undercarriages for howitzers.

Then, according to a Caterpillar historian, the Defense Department decreed for production to switch exclusively to motor graders and track-type tractors on a large scale.

Tom Emery, a freelance writer from Carlinville, said the state’s economy was booming during the war. Factories were humming with wartime activity.

“The industrial cities were cranking out products that were war related,” Emery said.

Many blacks moved to Illinois during the war, particularly to Chicago for jobs. And female employment grew by 50 percent.

ROSIE THE RIVETER One of those Rosie the Riveters was Ruth Lockart, who recently participated in the oral history project at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The

project was to reach out to World War II veterans and those who grew up during that time.

Lockart worked as a riveter at the Howard Aircraft Corp. in Chicago. When America went to war, she was on the family farm in Paris but she wanted to get involved in the war effort and moved to Chicago where her sister lived. She trained as a riveter at the American Aircraft Institute and later went to the Howard Aircraft Corp. where she helped to construct a Navy training plane.

“I think there were different models but I don’t know too much about them.

The one I worked on was the Nightengale,” Lockart said. “We’d go to the factory at 8 a.m. and then we’d be off at 5 in the evening. We’d take a streetcar to the factory.”

Chicago, she said, was different then than now, saying it felt like a small town when she lived there.

“I have always been proud that I was a Rosie the Riveter,” Lockart said. After the war, she went to beauty school in Paris and married a soldier who fought in the European Theater.

POW CAMPS Illinois was the home to several prisoner of war camps including one in Washington, a few miles outside of Peoria.

From 1944 to 1945, the village was the site of a small POW camp. The camp started with 50 German prisoners who helped make K-rations for the troops.

The camp expanded over the months to have more than 200 POWs, according to a book published by Mary Kerr about the Washington camp.

Kerr is working on another book about central Illinois during World War II, and including a chapter on a POW camp in the center of Eureka.

“Many people didn’t have contact with the prisoners and didn’t know if they were ‘good or bad,’” Kerr said. “But if you had contact with them, you probably went away thinking that they were OK.” The kids were very intrigued by the POWs, she said, noting that many would ride their bikes to the camp and talk to prisoners.

of three victims he was accused of attacking on or near the I&M canal two years ago. The third victim, however, recently died, and the charges related to her case were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea in the other two cases.

It is important to note that the investigation into the third victim’s case is what led police to identify Luna as the attacker in all three sexual assaults.

Luna attacked the first victim between Brandon Road and

Larkin Avenue on Sept. 6, 2015. In this case, Luna jumped off a bike, tackled the woman from behind, dragged her into the woods, and tied her up. He repeatedly sexually assaulting the victim during the more than 90 minutes he held her captive.

Another woman was attacked near the I&M Canal path in a similar manner around 8 a.m. on May 21, 2016 while she was running along the Frontage Road near Interstate 55.

The defendant, who was wearing a ski mask, sunglasses, and surgical gloves, grabbed the victim from behind, put her into a chokehold, and tied her hands

with shoelaces under the I-55 viaduct. He sexually assaulted her and left her tied under the viaduct . She was able to free herself.

In both cases, he indicated he was armed with a knife, but he never brandished one.

The suspect was identified during the investigation of a sexual assault of another woman that occurred on May 18, 2016.

The defendant, who also knew this woman’s friend, tied up his victim and sexually assaulted her in a secluded area near Brandon Road. The victim’s friend later identified Luna for police.

After Luna was identified in connection with this case, his

DNA would conclusively link him to the other two sexual assaults.

“Miguel Luna is in this country illegally. This ruthlessly violent sexual predator should never have had the opportunity to brutally prey upon these innocent young women,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “He terrorized our community by repeatedly committing the most vicious sexual assaults against unsuspecting women in an historic area that people from throughout the region safely enjoy for recreation.”

Luna was living in the 1400 block of Winifred Street in Joliet.

Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch secured the guilty plea.

The exhibit was created in celebration of the National Park Service’s centennial anniversary.

also is an environmentally sensitive “unplugged” affair. Visitors can bike or hike in via the I&M Canal State Trail. Bicycle parking will be available. Bring a refillable water bottle you can replenish at on-site water stations.

CHARLESTON — For three years, Daijah Brown competed at the state track and field meet and ran in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University wearing the blue and while of Plainfield South.

This season when she took the iconic blue track, not only did she did so as a member of Joliet West High School, but she left with a medal around her neck for the first time.

Brown ran the 400-meter dash in 57.30 seconds and placed eight in the race.

She is only the second Tiger to ever medal in the 400 and is the first runner from a Joliet school to earn a spot on the podium since West’s Chris Crowther was state champion in 1982.

“It feels good,” Brown said. “My

body is a little sore – I had quad problems, but I fought through it. I was my last race, so I had to push. It was a good way to end high school – placing at state. Not a lot of people can even say they went to state, so I am still very proud of myself.”

Brown qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash posting a time of 57.15 in the preliminaries.

“That is the best I have ever done at state and I have been here all four years,” she said.

Brown said that coming into the season, she wasn’t sure how the year would go.

“It was questionable because I am at a new school, but it was nice going to a new school and getting different training and seeing what my body is capable of,” she said. “That was good, because I will have to learn new things in college. I am running at SEE ENOUGH PAGE 8

Slammers earn 3 wins to open The Joliet Slammers (3-6) beat the Windy City Thunderbolts (5-3) 3-2 thanks to a walk off home run by Justin Garcia.

The Thunderbolts started their scoring in the top of the 2nd inning when Ronnie Healy singled in Tyler Straub putting Windy City on the board at 1-0.

Riley Krane added on for Windy City after an RBI single in the top of the 5th that brought home Blair Beck making it 2-0.

RJ Thompson put the Slammers on the board with a two out two run single in the bottom of the 6th that scored Chaz Meadows and Trenton Hill tying the game at 2.

In the bottom of the 9th Justin Garcia hit a walk off home run winning it for the Slammers with a score of 3-2.

Joliet returns home Friday, May 25th vs. the Southern Illinois Miners. Friday night is Rock Night with another Fireworks Friday.

A game earlier, the Slammers fell 3-0 to WIndy City despite the efforts of Liam O’Sullivan, a 6-foot, 3-inch right hander from South Grafton, Massachusetts, retired the first 14 batters he faced and did not give up a hit until the top of the 5th, when Windy City first baseman Tyler Straub hit a single to right.

The ThunderBolts starting pitcher, Jake Welch, gave up two hits in the first 2 innings, including a single up the middle gap by Slammers’ first baseman Trenton Hill. Following the at bat, Welch retired 13 straight Joliet batters.

In the seventh , the Slammers threatened with bases loaded after a pair of walks and a single by Hill, but Ridge Hoopii-Haslam struck out looking, keeping the score 0-0.

Ransom LaLonde hit a deep sac fly to right field, scoring Tyler Straub.

Blair Beck would hit a double off the left field wall, bringing Darius Day home to score. The ThunderBolts would put up 3 runs in the 8th inning.

O’Sullivan would then be pulled after 7.1 innings pitched.

He surrendered 3 Runs on only 4 Hits and struck out 7 batters.

The Slammers opened their series against Windy City with an 8-2 win.

The Slammers were trailing 2-0 in the middle of the 4th but took a lead in the bottom half of the inning and didn’t look back.

Travis Bolin and Ridge Hoopi-Haslam each collected an RBI in the inning for the Slammers.

Joliet’s offense continued its tear in the bottom of the 6th inning posting a four-spot with Chaz Meadows forcing a bad throw with the bases loaded.

Travis Bolin, Cody Clark and Alex Krupa scored on the error making it a 6-2 game.

That was the second win in a row for Joliet as the Slammers found their offensive stride Thursday morning against the visiting Otters of Evansville in a 7-2 victory.

After dropping the last two games to the Otters, losing them 6-3 on Tuesday and 6-4 on Wednesday, the Slammers wanted to ensure that they came out of their opening home series with a win.

The Slammers had struggled in their previous games and could not find their way out of difficult situations.

When runners were in scoring position, they were unable to bring them home. T his was not the case Thursday morning.

SLAMMERS FROM PAGE 8 Hoffman got the Slammers out of a bases loaded jam, the team went to work at the plate, driving in three runs in the top of the 1st.

Third basemen Danny Zardon would start the scoring with a single into center field to bring home Thompson from second base.

After an offensive push and a few walks at the plate, second baseman Hoopi-Haslam hit a fly ball to shallow left field that passed the fielder and scored two runners on base.

The Slammers would lead, 3-0,after one inning.

A pitching mistake by Evansville pitcher Nathan Foriest in the bottom of the 2nd allowed the Slammers to advance runners and score one more run.

Two innings later, Slammers DH Justin Garcia would connect with an outside pitch and shot it over the right field wall for a 340 foot home run (5-0).

Scot Hoffman would continue to pitch until the 6th inning.

He allowed only four hits and gave up no runs in five innings,

Minooka had a second pole vaulter in the event, as freshman Ava Bezaire cleared 10-feet, but did not make the finals.

Lockport junior Andi Hennessey cleared 10-6, but also missed the 10-9 qualifying height.

Minooka senior Aaliyah Young posted a long jump of 15-6.5, while Lockport’s senior Sarah Gomez and Joliet Central senior Cara Huff both missed the opening height of the high jump.

On the track, Lockport’s 4x800meter relay team of junior Kate Wojciewicz, sophomore Madison Polinski and sophomores Abbey and Anna Kozak ran a 9-minute, 45.09-second prelim time, while Minooka’s team of junior Vivian Van Eck, sophomore Julia Dames, freshman Olvia Krolczyk and senior ran a 9:43.18.

In the 800 run, Wojciewicz ran a 2:24.30 on Friday, while in the 200 dash Lockport junior Jacqueline Mathius ran a 26.47. In the 300-meter low hurdles, Minooka

senior Kylie Wissel posted a time of 45.88.

Aside from competing in the finals in the 400, Brown joined freshman Ari Santana, senior Arianna Short and senior Shyasia Baker to post a time of 48.37 in the 400-meter dash.

Santana had two more events in her first state finals as she teamed with junior Tia Dillon, junior Eliya Tulloch and senior Shyasia Baker to post a time of 1:44.57 in the 4x200 relay. Santana, Dillon, Short and senior Marina Rico ran a 4:07.11 in the 4x400 relay.

Lockport freshman Josephine Bober was 27th in the state, posting a time of 11:55.88 in the 3200 run.

He even asked for half of the bonus I received at work the other day. I know they need help, but I’m not sure what to do.

ELI DEAR ELI, I can tell you love your parents, because you’re looking for the best way to help them. I think your brain knows what to do, but your heart is having a hard time doing it.

The first thing you’re going to have to accept is your father is being very manipulative right now.

Put an end to these private meetings and phone calls once and for all. If he wants to talk, make sure he understands it will only happen with your mom in the room.

Second, understand there’s nothing wrong with helping your folks get back on their feet. However, any financial help you give them should be temporary in nature, and it should be a gift. Don’t get involved in giving them money every month just because they raised you. That’s not how this works. When you permanently subsidize someone, you take away their dignity. Club Puentes to host annual Peace Walk with JJC Latinos Unidos The Joliet Central High School student group Club Puentes will host their annual Peace Walk on Thursday, May 24 outside of the T & I building from 3:15 to 5 pm. Club Puentes has invited Latinos Unidos from Joliet Junior College to talk to any seniors that will attend JJC next year about how they can become involved in LU. All are welcome.

The peace walk will be followed by a “Carne Asada” potluck outside of the South entrance of the T & I building on campus, courtesy of Club Puentes, Team Human, and Dare to Dream. Staff and students are invited to contribute any edible item they would

like to bring by emailing Spanish teacher Jeffrey Grimes at jgrimes@jths.org.

SPC Literary Festival award winners Joliet Central and West High School students earned top awards at the Southwest Prairie Conference (SPC) Literary Festival in April.

The 2017-2018 Conference took place at Plainfield North High School, with nine other school joining together to celebrate the written word.

Student participants submitted writing pieces in seven categories including: Personal Essay, Critical Essay, Personal Narrative, Poetry, Dramatic Scene, Descriptive Sketch, and Short Fiction.

Winning the highest honor in the Dramat-

ic Scene Category, Joliet West High School student Diego Mateo received the Critic’s Choice Award, along with 3rd place in the Poetry category.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Joliet West student Elaina (Laney) Naling in the Critical Essay and Personal Essay categories, and Amber Scheible in the Short Fiction category.

Joliet Central High School student Rebecca Verchimak was awarded 1st place for her Critical Essay; and Beesan Salama was awarded 3rd place in the Personal Essay category.

Drafting competition medalists

In April Joliet Township High School had eight students compete in the Illinois Design Educators Association (IDEA) State

Competition at Illinois State University. Four of these students earned medals in the state competition.
