Redevelopment for a cityowned property just outside Slammers Stadium to include a doughnut shop and sandwich shop could be in the works.

Potential developers behind the proposal are generating interest from city staff, enough interest to consider beginning negotiations for a redevelopment agreement for what is known as the “Stadium Club” at 141 E. Jefferson St. Discussion was held May 11 by members of the city’s economic development committee regarding the 18,000 square-foot building, which hasn’t been utilized in a number of years.

“Basically, this is the sort of proposal that really meets our downtown plan: mecca for young adults,” Deputy City Manager Steve Jones said.

Plans proposed for the site include 10 multi-family apartment units and three commercial spaces. The developer already holds a letter of intent from a sandwich shop and is currently in talks with a doughnut shop.

In late 2016, the city put together goals for economic development. Request for proposals were sent out to parties whose initiative is to put the building to use.

“When you think about it as a baseball stadium downtown, there’s more to it than that,” Jones said. “[The developer] had the vision to realize that with his three commercial spaces as opposed to one.”

Jones noted that grocery stores have become a source of interest on the city’s east side and said commercial space could include a convenience store if desired.

The developer intends to survey the market for other potential opportunities to occupy space within the building.

mittee Chairman Larry Hug said he supports this proposal as it’s drafted.

“Believe it or not, I want to point out the other proposal was very good, too,” he said. “[We’re] getting a couple microbreweries up and running here in downtown. They were looking at putting a microbrewery.”

Hug noted that establishing another microbrewery in town could hold challenge for Joliet if the business closed and said it would be easier to fill the space later with other potential uses.

“I think this can be a good project,” Jones said. “If you would’ve told me six months ago this project would be ready before Crabigale’s, I wouldn’t have believed it. I would’ve thought this would be kind of a off-the-beaten-path property wouldn’t be attractive, but these guys were excited.”

The project, if approved by the Joliet City Council, is a probable 12-month build out.

City Center Partnership board seeking new members The Joliet City Center Partnership is seeking new board members to join its ranks, its chairman said last week.

The board has yet to be expanded since the city approved a measure late last year expanding the special service area to businesses on Cass, Collins and Chicago streets. To add, the city’s Economic Development committee approved a memorandum of understanding to solidify rules between the City of Joliet and the Joliet City Center Partnership.

Chairman Bryan Kopman said those wanting to serve on the board should contact the Joliet City Center Partnership. The new members would be taken after new bylaws are drafted, he said.

The board’s rules currently stipulate that members must own property in the downtown, manage property there, work there or serve as an elected official whose district covers the area. A new measure was introduced into the

memorandum of understanding to expand membership to as many as two new members from outside the district that possess expertise desired by the board.

The memorandum of understanding is to be reviewed by the Joliet City Council at a later date.

Joliet police conducting safety checkpoints during Memorial Day holiday Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton announced that the Joliet Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, will participate in a statewide effort to increase seatbelt usage and reduce the number of impaired drivers over the Memorial Day holiday.

From now through May 30 special enforcement efforts will include saturation patrols, seatbelt enforcement zones, and a roadside safety checkpoint throughout the City. Officers assigned to these details will be checking for occupant and child restraint violations, cell phone usage violations, and other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code.

According to Chief Benton, “Our primary goal will be to increase compliance with existing traffic laws to ensure safer roadways throughout the City of Joliet.”

Drivers and passengers are encouraged to always wear a seatbelt, to never use an electronic communication device while driving, and never drink and drive.

These campaigns are possible through traffic safety enforcement grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The City of Joliet is the fourth largest city in the state of Illinois, located just 45 miles southwest of Chicago’s Loop. Home to over 147,000 residents, in addition to thriving businesses and attractions, the City of Joliet is easily accessible by rail, auto and bus transit.

Plan return from travels Make returning from vacation a little easier You’re probably pretty good at planning and organizing your vacations and other trips. But have you ever given thought to how to make the end of your trip just as organized as the beginning?

Having recently returned from a threeweek vacation with no access to electronics (it was heavenly!), I’ve recently put these tips into action myself. Following them not only helped me ease back into civilization, but has also left me in good shape for my next trip.

Unpack thoroughly.

Don’t be tempted to stash your suitcase in a corner and keep returning to it to retrieve items as you realize the things you need are still in there. Spend 15 minutes pulling everything out (be sure to check all the zippered compartments and pockets) and getting each item where it belongs – laundry in the hamper (or better yet, in the washer), toiletries in the bathroom (unless you keep them in your suitcase to be ready for the next trip),

photos you still haven’t organized, but that’s no reason not to take a different approach going forward. At a minimum, tag your photos or make notes about them while your memories are still fresh. As vivid as the details may have been when you took the pictures, it’s amazing how quickly that information is forgotten.

Turn off your “on vacation” message. If you’ve recorded a phone message to tell callers you’re away, or set up an email auto-responder to let people know it will be a while before you respond to them, be sure to turn it off once you return. I cheat a bit by having my out-of-office messages indicate I’ll be gone a few days beyond my planned return date. That gives me a few days to get caught up on things and edit my photos. Oops, now my secret is out.

Minooka senior Jonathan Butler has been a top athlete for the Indians

With the postseason approaching, Jonathan Butler plans to help the Minooka baseball team in anyway he can.

While Butler has been a multisport athlete at Minooka, baseball has been his main love.

As a senior he’d literally love to help the Indians finish the season strong.

“Ever since I can remember I’ve always loved baseball,” Butler said. “Just being outside and having a brother who plays it that’s close to me in age.”

That brother is 2016 Minooka graduate Joe Butler, who is currently finishing up his freshman season at Illinois State University.

But Jonathan, who is the youngest of four children, has certainly made a name for himself.

“He’s an incredible athlete, but even a better person,” Minooka baseball coach Jeff Petrovic said of Jonathan. “They were all great kids and a great family, but Jon

is just a heck of an athlete. He’s the epitome of a great baseball player. He does so many little things.”

Butler hopes to do one of those little things again by the end of the season: Pitch. That, however, may not happen.

“I strained my oblique muscle,” Butler said of the injury that’s kept him from taking the mound in the first half of the season. “I’m hoping to come back, but I won’t come back until I’m 100 percent healthy.”

But the injury hasn’t sidelined him from batting in the mid .300’s and playing an excellent center field.

“He’s so important in the batting order and he’s so important in the outfield,” Petrovic said.

“He’s right there with the best outfielders I’ve had. He’s got every tool.”

When it came to a college choice, however, Butler decided none of the offers from 4-year schools fit him.

Saints dominate CCAC season awards Just like it dominated both the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament with titles in each, the University of St. Francis softball team also came away with the most postseason league hardware with no fewer than seven individuals being recognized for this season’s historic run.

Headlining the group was junior pitcher Morghan Dieringer (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way West), who was named the CCAC Pitcher of the Year.

She either led or tied for the league lead in five statistical categories with her 20 wins (against only four losses), four saves, 0.93 earned run average, 197 strikeouts and .189 opponents’ batting average during the regular

season.

She was second in innings pitched with 158 2/3.

Dieringer was also one of four repeat selections to the all-conference first team.

She was joined by three other teammates on the first team with another two Saints earning second-team honors.

Like Dieringer, Kayla Garcia (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) also came away with one of the top four individual awards when she was recognized as the CCAC Freshman of the Year to go along with her first-team accolades.

The first baseman ranked among the best in the conference in multiple categories during the regular season, including top billings in on base percentage (.525) and walks (25) and

runner-up distinction in home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.768). She also placed fourth in total bases (96), tied for fourth in runs batted in (45) and eighth in batting average (.408).

Juniors Brooke Karraker (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) and Ally Balandis (Burbank, Ill./ Reavis) completed the list of USF representatives on the allconference first team.

Karraker, a second baseman/ outfielder, led the league in doubles (18) and finished second or tied for second in runs scored (52), runs batted in (46), triples (four) and total bases (104) during the regular season.

She was also sixth in hits (57) and slugging percentage (.658).

She hit .361 on the year, appearing in all 42 regular-season

games.

Balandis, a catcher/third baseman, also ranked among the league’s elite with her 46 runs batted in (tied for second with Karraker), 12 doubles (T7th), 86 total bases (eighth) and 37 runs scored (T-8th).

She also saw action in all 42 of the Saints’ regular-season games this spring and hit .358 for the year.

Representing the brown and gold on the second team were sophomore Taylor Barsz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and junior Anna Wetherell (Rock Island, Ill./ Alleman Catholic).

Barsz went unbeaten on the mound during the regular season (11-0) and her 1.14 earned run average was second in the league to only Dieringer.

Her 11 wins tied for the seventh-most in the conference, while her .242 opponents’ batting average ranked sixth.

Five of her wins were of the shutout variety.

Wetherell, an outfielder, used her speed to score the thirdmost runs in the conference during the regular season with 46.

Her getting into scoring position was aided by the secondmost stolen bases in the league, going a perfect 28-for-28.

Appearing in all 42 regularseason games, she hit .320 on the season as the Saints’ leadoff batter.

the CCAC Coach of the Year after notching her first conference regular-season title and the first in the program since 2001.

The conference tournament title was also both her first and the first one in school history.

USF takes its 41-5 record and No. 9 national ranking into the NAIA National Tournament – Opening Round, where it will be the No. 1 seed in the Bowling Green (Ky.) Bracket.

The Saints face Indiana Wesleyan at 2:30 pm Monday to start the four-team, doubleelimination tournament.

They certainly are as the HCC baseball page touts these accomplishments: There’s 135 players who have moved through the HCC baseball program and went on to complete a 4-year degree.

Of those 121 student-athletes moved on to play baseball at 4-year programs, with 84 joining NCAA Division-1 programs.

Then 15 went on to play professional baseball.

“I had a couple of D1 looks, but they weren’t able to give scholarships,” Butler said. “So I decided to go to a junior college, get better and hopefully get a scholarship.”

It doesn’t hurt that Heartland is located in Bloomington, just down the street from Illinois State. So Butler, who plans to eventually major in chemical or mechanical engineering, will be able to see his brother a bit more easily.

“It’s more of a coincidence,” Butler said of the proximity between the two schools. “I just really liked Heartland.”

He’s also really liked playing sports for the Indians. Butler played as a defensive back on the football for three seasons before giving it up this past fall to concentrate on baseball.

Bauers used a throw of 48 feet, eight inches to place seventh in the shot put.

Welsh was eighth in the hammer throw with his heave of 161 feet.

No team results were kept at the meet.

I think the right one,” said Butler, who played on the Midwest Scout Baseball team for the Cincinnati Reds last fall. “I wanted to play fall baseball and get more looks.”

But he didn’t give up basketball. In fact the 6-foot-2 1/2 inch Butler was a 4-year starter on the Indians’ hoops team and scored 37 points on Feb. 10 of this season in 61-48 home victory over Romeoville.

During his time as a varsity basketball player, he played everything from point guard to post. But it was a moment his junior season that remains his top one in high school to this point.

“I really enjoyed junior year when we won [the Class 4A] regional title,” Butler said of the Indians 49-31 home victory on March 4, 2016 over a Bolingbrook team that took third in the state both the year before and after that. “We won it on our home court, before all our fans, That was special.”

Did Butler consider playing basketball in college, instead of baseball?

“Maybe a little, but not really,” he said. “Baseball is my true passion and I think I can excel at the next level there.”

And in the meantime help the Indians to a good finish here.

“We have a good team [at Minooka] this year, but we know there’s a lot of good teams,” Butler said. “We have to be ready come regional time and all finish strong

Crowdfunding real estate is a horrible ‘shortcut’ I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario DEAR DAVE, I’d like to get involved in real estate investing, but I don’t have a lot of cash at present. What do you think of the idea of crowdfunding as a way to invest in real estate?

ADAM DEAR ADAM, I’ve got a bunch of real estate, and I love it. But I wouldn’t go the crowdfunding route as a way to get started in real estate investing.

I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario, either.

The late Beverly Sills had a great saying: “There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” Investing in real estate is wonderful when you do it right. Get out of debt first, pay cash, and find great bargains.

When you get in a hurry, and do

dumb stuff like go into debt or get mixed up with partnerships in the process, real estate’s a horrible investment.

I admire your ambition, Adam.

But I would advise you to follow my lead on this one. You’ll be glad you did!

ANONYMOUS DEAR ANONYMOUS, It’s pretty easy to get term life insurance – the only kind of life insurance I recommend – up until

around age 70. Depending on your overall health situation, there are a few affordable policies available past that point. But once you get into your 70s and beyond it can be difficult to find reasonably priced coverage.

I recommend that most people have 10 to 12 times their annual income wrapped up in a good, level term life insurance policy. But honestly, you shouldn’t need life insurance at 70 or older. If you’ve been wise with your money, and saved and invested, you should be selfinsured by that point. This means having plenty of cash in the bank to cover burial expenses and enough for a spouse to live on after you’re gone.

Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that studies have linked foods that contain probiotics to healthy blood pressure. Probiotics are consumable live bacteria, and while studies regarding the relationship between probiotics and blood pressure are ongoing, researchers believe probiotics may produce chemicals that, when absorbed in the blood stream, may activate receptors in the blood vessels to lower blood pressure.

LOSE WEIGHT People with high blood pressure who are carrying a few extra pounds should know that research indicates extra weight can cause injury to the heart. Dropping those pounds, especially through physical activity that can boost heart health, can help men and women lower their blood pressure.
