Joliet to host prison open house in August City, museum working on entertainment, offerings

For anyone who’s itching for a chance to visit the grounds of the old Joliet Prison, there’s an open house planned for summer.

Word of the fundraising event was announced at a recent member luncheon put on by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce Industry. The open house is the weekend of Aug. 24-26.

“We expect music,” Deputy City Manager Steve Jones said. “We expect Evil Intentions. Maybe some surprises from the [Joliet Area Historical] Museum. … Bottom line is, I think this would be the first, real hard opening of the prison.”

The old Joliet prison was shuttered in 2002. Since that time, the site has remained vacant.

After a report last summer of a second fire occurring on the prison site, the City decided it needed to take action to put the property to use and that the status quo was no longer acceptable.

The property is made up of three parts: open lands, east prison and west prison.

In February, the Joliet City Council took action to approve a sublease agreement with Evil In-

tentions, enabling the Elgin-based entertainment company to bring haunts and spooks to the east prison site.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said there’s a lot of interest in the prison and what’s going on over there.

“They say it’s one of the hottest pieces of property in the State of Illinois,” he said.

Joliet Area Historical Museum Executive Director Greg Peerbolte said the City has always talked about this site having its own “brand” and that’s a brand that’s been established for 150 years.

“This is part of the fabric of Joliet,” Peerbolte said. “This is part of our story, and that’s what really what fascinates me is how the community interacted with this facility over the years. Yes, you have the famous prisoners … but you also have 160 years of interaction with the community.”

The Collins Street Task Force has been working to attain historic preservation status for the prison site.

Over the last two years, The City of Joliet and the Joliet Area Historical Museum started working together to develop a long-term plan for the west prison site.

There is no funding in the City’s budget for the property, to date.

“We’re looking at a way to stabilize it, secure it, and try to develop a long-term plan for the site,” said Quinn Adamowski, vice president of the Joliet Area Historical Museum Board of Directors.

The City wants to disassociate the negative stereotypes the prison sometimes conjures.

“We want to make sure we’re also telling this story conscien-

tiously; that this is a site of conscience and a site of respect for a tough topic to talk about,” Peerbolte said.

The City is looking to form a

steering committee to help put together the open house.

All proceeds generated during the event will benefit the Joliet Prison and its restoration fund.

Joliet teacher receives Golden Apple for excellence in teaching Golden Apple surprised Lynne Thigpen Elementary School First Grade Teacher Carrie Garrett with the highly respected Golden Apple Award of Excellence in Teaching.

The annual award, which recognizes and honors outstanding teachers for their role in building a stronger, better-educated society, was presented to Garrett in her classroom in front of her students, family, and Joliet Public Schools District 86 administrators.

Carrie Garrett is one of only 10 Chicago teachers, the only one in Joliet and Will County, to receive

this annual award. Created by founders Mike and Pat Koldyke, Golden Apple’s mission is to inspire, develop and support teacher and school leader excellence in Illinois, especially in schools-of-need.

The 2018 award recipients were selected from a record-setting number of nominations - more than 650 nominations, and represent Pre-K through 3rd grade teachers from the Chicago area.

Fellow educators, students, parents and community members nominate teachers for the award each year.

“We are so proud of Carrie for receiving this prestigious award,” said Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse.

“Golden Apple is proud to recognize this year’s award recipients for their exceptional accomplishments in the classroom,” said Alicia Winckler, Golden Apple president and CEO. “Each of the recipients is uniquely talented and epitomizes the dedication, skill and drive in the teaching profession that facilitates better futures for scores of young people.”

Residents air concerns over proposed warehouse Trustees want to be diligent over Mound Street development

Residents packed the boardroom March 27 at the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees meeting, as officials were slated to review proposed plans for a warehouse development with a truck turnaround terminal off Mound and Frontage roads.

The developer, HSA Acquisitions, and the property owner, George Kappos, are looking to get the project off the ground.

A public hearing was held Feb. 27 over the Village’s intent to approve and authorize an annexation agreement between Shorewood, George Kappos and HSA Acquisitions for an approximate 48 acres of unincorporated land.

The proposed 20-year agreement stipulates that no fees will be further assessed to the developer

upon annexation into Shorewood.

It states that the developer is required to help the Village improve Mound Road and will pay $312,181.18 to satisfy this aim.

Several residents raised concerns for the project later during Shorewood’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

“I imagine you want it for the tax base,” Lynn Wright said. “Is there anything else people would offer to put there besides that big ugly warehouse?”

None of the elected officials or Village staff expressed any knowledge of such information.

The Village does not own the property, to date. It is, however, zoned for agriculture by Will County and included in Shorewood’s comprehensive plan. The annexation, if approved, will require rezoning for office, research, light industrial district use.

“We can’t tell them what they

need to put on there,” Trustee Anthony Luciano said. “They’re investing money in a project, and that’s what they seem to feel would be the best return on that money is this warehouse.”

During the Village Board meeting, staff brought to the board’s attention that several other related matters need to be reviewed and considered regarding the development. Part of the project, slated to be voted on during the meeting, was tabled.

Typically, when an ordinance is presented to the board, it is required to go through a first read, enabling officials to get a good understanding of what they’re voting on.

Mayor Rick Chapman said this matter is important enough that the Village is not looking to waive the second read and take action during the meeting, but officials will take action in two weeks.

As such, officials did not vote and will consider a series of related measures at their April 10 meeting.

Utility payment processing fees discussed Also at the Committee of the Whole meeting, the board was brief on the Village’s intent to pass onto the consumer any utility payment processing fees made by residents

that use credit cards to make a single transaction.

Village staff has determined that officials are able to take action to satisfy this aim.

The rate will amount to two percent when assessed to a resident’s utility bill. The Village uses the financial software Accela to enable residents to make utility payments.

Each month, Shorewood has been footing a bill of about $3,500 to cover the utility payment processing fees.

The Village is required to give 30 days notification of this change to residents, if it’s approved.

Board action, if passed in April, will not impact anyone who makes utility payments through auto pay.

School tackles cancer through St. Baldrick’s Orencic students, teachers, staff raised over $12,000 for research Principal, administrators, students shave heads, collect donations for St. Baldrick’s Day About 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will get cancer before they turn 20, and on March 15, students and staff at William B. Orenic Intermediate School, a Troy District 30-C school, did their best to bring that number down.

Organized by the school’s L.E.A.D. Club (Leadership, Empathy, Action and Dedication), sites on the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website were set up for pledges, barbers set up tables in the gymnasium, and the buzz cuts began.

By the end of the day, the event had raised $12,160.

A total of 16 students had their heads shaved. Some students left a few millimeters of hair on their heads, while others chose to shave it clean.

W.B.O. Principal Larry Piatek, Transportation Director Lucille Feeney, 5th grade math teacher Peter Chinderle and head night custodian Ben Hauge took the challenge and got their locks shaved off in the spirit of the fundraiser.

“It feels outstanding,” Piatek said of the shave. “We had great participation and raised a lot of money for children’s cancer. I give all the credit to the L.E.A.D. Club and to its sponsors Allison Acevedo and Jennifer Obrecht.”

Chinderle said he did it for the good cause and chose this year “while I still have hair.”

Troy Transportation Director Lucille Feeney had all of her brunette locks taken off after a promise that if donors pledged at least $2,000, she would “rock the bald.” On the day of the event, her pledges totaled more than

$4,000. The top fundraising student was Hannah Rasmussen, with $3,328 in pledges.

Feeney thanked the generosity of the students, staff and community for the donations.

Hair stylists who volunteered their time shave the heads and to spray hair green were Jennifer Bennett, Maddy DeRocco, Heather Giles, Megan Hawkins, Tracy Hinthorn, Christa Lennox and Wendy Nelson.

L.E.A.D. Club volunteers Mackenzie Mertes, Jessica Cole and Emily Sarata worked the event and said they were happy to be able to help children who have cancer and to let them know that they’re not alone.

“We are all fighting for them,” Mackenzie said.

Acevedo said this is the first time the school has done the St. Baldrick’s event and that they will likely do it again next year. Piatek said he would be inviting the other six Troy Community School District 30-C schools to participate next time.

Illinois native Bill Veeck was champion for game of baseball

BY ROGER RUTHHART | ROCK ISLAND ARGUS Bill Veeck wasn’t your typical baseball team owner.

He was listed in the Chicago phonebook. He often walked the Comiskey Park concourse shaking hands as he limped on his wooden leg that he retrofitted with an ashtray.

As a young man he planted the ivy on the outfield walls at Wrigley Field.

He hired Larry Doby, the first black to play in the American League just months after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers. And he owned the Cleveland Indians when they last won a World Series in 1948. In later years, he was a regular on Chicago sports TV talk shows offering reasoned arguments on politics and society, and was often seen on WGN broadcasts of Cubs games shirtless with a beer in his hand sitting among the fans in the Wrigley Field bleachers.

Bill Veeck was a showman, nonconformist and a champion for the game of baseball and the fan. And he’s an Illinois product. Veeck was born in Hinsdale in 1914. One of his early jobs was working with his father, who ran the Chicago Cubs in the 1920s and 1930s, selling everything from tickets to popcorn.

“His father, William Veeck Sr., wrote for the Chicago American under the name Bill Bailey. He was intensely critical of the Cubs. It was unheard of at the time to take a newspaper writer and make him the general manager of the team,” said Paul Dickson, author of “Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick.” “He comes in and (owner William Wrigley Jr.) just loves him.

“He went in with the idea that Wrigley wanted to promote the team as an event for the whole family, rather than a game for guys with a cigar in their mouth. He sold it as a summer oasis. They planted trees and the ivy on the outfield wall and redid the bleachers and put in new concession stands with better food. Wrigley was a great advertising man and filled the newspapers with ads, not about how great the team was, but about the experience at Wrigley Field, about how much fun the family was going to have.”

The Cubs won two National League pennants under Veeck Sr., who died in 1933 when his son was just 19 and a stu-

dent at Kenyon College in Ohio. The son left school to return to work for the Cubs, becoming team treasurer.

“He wanted to fulfill what his dad was doing,” Dickson said. “Part of that was planting the ivy. He carried out the mission that Wrigley wanted.

He kept Wrigley Field a friendly place. Cubs games were a social place as well as as athletic event. Veeck made sure the hot dogs were hot and the beer was cold.”

In 1942, Veeck, along with former Cubs star and manager Charlie Grimm, bought the Triple-A Milwaukee Brewers. Veeck experimented with promotions (including a contest to rename the ladies’ room. The winner was “Hall of Fem.”) and game times, seeking to attract as many fans as possible. He also enlisted in the Marines, serving three years in an artillery unit (the same unit as Peoria native and Chicago Cubs announcer Jack Brickhouse) during World War II. Veeck’s leg was crushed by a recoiling artillery piece and his foot was amputated. He would later have more than 30 surgeries on the leg and lived the rest of his life in constant pain.

Veeck sold his interest in the Milwaukee club and in 1946 purchased the Cleveland Indians.

With Doby in the Cleveland lineup, Veeck also signed legendary pitcher Satchel Paige of the Negro Leagues, making him the oldest rookie in baseball history. The Indians won the World Series in 1948. A year later, and in need of money to settle a divorce with his first wife, Veeck sold the Indians.

In 1951, Veeck bought the lowly St. Louis Browns. According to one tale, when a fan called the Browns’ offices to see what time that day’s game was supposed to start, Veeck responded, “What time can you make it?”

Some of Veeck’s greatest stunts took place in St. Louis. In August 1951, Eddie Gaedel, who stood 3 feet 7 inches and wore number 1/8, suited up for the Browns. The shortest man to ever play in the major leagues walked in his only plate appearance.

Veeck also turned game management over to the fans for a game, giving the crowd signs stating “Yes” and “No” when asked if the Browns should bunt, steal a base or play the infield in. The Browns beat Philadelphia 5-3 that day.

Money issues often prompted Veeck

to sell his teams but rarely was he out of the game for long. After leaving St. Louis, he returned to Chicago, buying the White Sox in 1959. That year, the Sox made the World Series for the first time in 40 years, but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Veeck would again sell his team.

One of Veeck’s best friends was Abe Saperstein, owner of the Harlem Globetrotters. “They were two of a kind, promoters,” Dickson said. “At one point the two of them talked about buying a circus. It was a Chicago style — brash. If Veeck grew up somewhere else he’d be a different person. He grew up reading the Chicago writers, people from his father’s era, like Ring Lardner. It was a different kind of place than anywhere else.”

In 1976, Veeck purchased his last baseball team, the Chicago White Sox again. This was on the eve of player free agency when salaries headed north of $1 million for top stars. Veeck created a strategy to keep the Sox competitive: rent-a-player, in which he would bring in a player in the last year of his contract with no intention of signing him after the season.

“It solidified him as to who he was,” Dickson said of rent-a-player. “He relished this opportunity.”

By 1981, Veeck could no longer complete with baseball’s new financial structure and sold the team. He left the game but his legacy continues and can be seen in every major- and minor-league ballpark, from the promotions to the scoreboards. He also had an influence on race and integration of the game.

“Veeck opened the park for kids, women and families,” Dickson said. “He knew the game was constantly facing challenges and he knew he had to keep a step ahead. He realized the total package of well-contained insanity. While it didn’t always work, consider Disco Demolition (when the White Sox had to forfeit a game because fans destroyed the field), he had a major impact on the game.”

Benet senior David Buh is the 2018 Voyager Media Boys Basketball Player of the Year

Coming into this season, little was expected of the Benet Academy boys basketball team.

The Redwings were coming in with several new players and a lot of people outside of the locker room did not give Benet a chance to advance as far as they had in the recent past.

But, when Benet ultimately reached the DeKalb Supersectional and fell in NIUs Convocation Center, the players on the team were not surprised at how far they had advanced.

“There wasn’t too much expectation on us, so it was nice to come together and prove people wrong,” Benet senior David Buh said. “We didn’t advance as far as we wanted, but that didn’t take away from the season. We are very pleased and we were

just very happy to wear the Benet uniform with pride.”

Buh was the leader of the Redwings, averaging 13.3 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 46 percent from the field. He tallied 64 total 3-point field goals.

For his efforts, Buh is the Voyager Media 2018 Player of the Year.

“He meant so much to us on both ends of the floor,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp.

“He guarded the best perimeter player most of the times defensively, we relied on him to score and he was our leading assist man. He impacted the game for us in every way possible. He had a tremendous year and he was a huge part of our success.

“David worked really hard to put himself in this position this year. I know how important this SEE ALL-AREA PAGE 8

TYLER COCHRAN BOLINGBROOK Junior led a talented Raider team in scoring averaging 14 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Class 3A/4A IBCA All-State Fourth Team.

DON JOACHIM JOLIET CENTRAL Senior was an All-SPC guard

that averaged 12 points, 2.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game for the Steelmen.

DUSAN MAHORIC NOTRE DAME Led the Dons with an average of 16 points, 10 rebounds and 1.93 blocks per game.

He was named to the All-East Suburban Catholic Conference team.

BRADY MILLER PLAINFIELD NORTH Three-sport standout, Miller averaged 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for the Tigers.

DIAMOND PRESNIAKOVAS PLAINFIELD SOUTH Junior led the Voyager Media in scoring, averaging 22 points per game to go with a 6 rebound average. He shot 51 percent from the floor.

He set the Cougars’ single game scoring record with 42 points against Romeoville on Feb. 22. His 625 points this season set the South single season scoring record, passing Rod Gates from 2003.

Slammers announce promo schedule The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy have an exciting lineup of weekday promotions and theme nights for the 2018 season.

Opening day at Joliet Route 66 Stadium is set for Tuesday, May 15 and is a $2 Tuesday with reserved seats starting at just $2.

Returning weekday promotions include $2 Tuesdays, Thirsty Thursdays, Fireworks Fridays (along with three Saturday shows), and Family Sundays with full team autographs.

Thirsty Thursdays presented by Bud Light feature $2 Bud, Bud Light, and $2 beverages from the Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group – the Slammers new soda partner.

In addition, fans can enjoy specialty cocktails of the Beam Suntory portfolio and even Ole Smoky moonshine at the brand new Ole Smoky Shine Shack along the third baseline.

Rolling into June, the Slammers are bringing back fan favorites such as Princess Night

on Friday, June 16 which includes princess characters provided by Magic, Music and More and post-game fireworks.

Star Wars night is set for Saturday, June 16 which will feature a pre-game softball game between Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers versus the Rebel Alliance.

Costume characters will be at the stadium throughout the game and fans can catch postgame fireworks.

The Slammers will play a 1 p.m. game on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17. Fans will have the opportunity to run the bases following the game and play catch on field.

The Slammers kick-off July with a big Independence Day Celebration July 3-4.

Fireworks are planned for both Tuesday, July 3, along with $2 Tickets, and for July 4.

The Slammers will also host

a community BBQ picnic on July 4 – no group is needed to reserve a ticket to the left field all-you-can-eat buffet.

Check cashing company not payday lender bad, but still not smart DEAR DAVE, How do you feel about check cashing companies?

NORMAN DEAR NORMAN, I’m not a big fan of check cashing companies. They’re not nearly as bad as payday lenders, but it still seems kind of silly to me there’s even a market for this kind of thing.

If you want a place to cash your checks and store your money, all you have to do is walk into a bank and open an account.

I realize there’s a small segment of the population that some people in financial circles like to call “the unbanked.” This means that, for whatever reason, they avoid banks.

That’s their choice, but in the process, they leave themselves susceptible to bad deals.

As I said, I don’t feel the same way about check-cashing companies as I do about payday lenders. But it’s still not a financially smart move to regularly pay a storefront operation fees just to cash your checks.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’m 27 and have no debt. In addition, I have a five-month emergency fund of $14,000. Recently, I started a new job making $60,000. I’ve been offered a 401(k) with no match, but I was wondering if instead I should open a high-yield CD. KRIS DEAR KRIS, You’re doing very well at a young age. Congratulations! I’m glad you’re thinking about your financial future, too. But I’ve got a better idea.

How about opening a Roth IRA with good growth stock mutual funds inside? That would be my

choice. Fund it up to $5,500 a year, and make sure the mutual funds have strong track records of at least 10 years. This investment — growing tax-free — will be superior to a non-matching 401(k) or certificate of deposit. If you want to invest even more, you could then put additional cash into the 401(k) offered by your company.

With your income and maturity, plus the proper investment strategy, you’re likely to retire a very wealthy lady. Keep up the great work, Kris!

Volunteer judges needed for the Joliet West High School Healthcare Career Fair This year, the Health and Medicine Academy at Joliet West High School is hosting a Healthcare Career Fair on Thursday, April 26.

Currently, our Health Occupations

students are compiling a career portfolio that includes information on a healthcare career of their choice and information on colleges and programs that will prepare them for their desired career. The portfolio project will culminate with students designing a poster display and preparing a short career presentation. Students will share their results at our Health Career Fair on April 26.

Please consider helping with this exciting endeavor. Joliet West is looking for community members

with backgrounds in business, science, engineering, medicine, etc., to be volunteer judges/mentors for the Healthcare Career Fair. The students gain valuable skills presenting their research and discussing their career goals with others.
