Joliet Central hosts Kermes Celebration Annual event promotes diversity of school’s community

Food, dancing and live entertainment drew crowds from across the community to turn out April 19, to take part in Joliet Central High School’s third annual Kermes Celebration.

The event, by design, aimed to

promote diversity and cultural understanding in the community.

“We wanted to invite the whole community to send a message to the community that Joliet Central loves [everyone], that we receive them,” said Jeff Grimes, a committee member for this year’s celebration. “We want [everyone] to feel at home.”

The Kermes Celebration was

started at Joliet Central three years ago in response to a donation of a portrait of Cesar Chavez, a civil rights activist and labor leader.

Around that time, a group of people decided that it wanted to present this to the community.

“We had music, and we had community organizations coming and talking about what they do,” Grimes said. “It evolved into this.

The spirit of the whole Kermes [Celebration] was to transform Joliet by embracing the people

that live in Joliet. This is who we are, we want to embrace and we want to embrace this community.”

Community organizations on hand for the event manned booths to engage and inform students of what’s available to them at Joliet Central High School and in the community. Among those in attendance included representatives for the Boys & Girls Club of Joliet, Joliet Junior College, University of St. Francis and Aurora University.

“Being a highly low-income minority school, we want to make sure parents can ask questions,” said Aseneth Ruiz, another committee member for this year’s event, noting that it is Joliet Central’s desire to make sure all parents have a chance to help their children succeed.

During the Kermes Celebration, people enjoyed an array of ethnic foods, including tacos, paletas

and elotes.

“We want to showcase diversity,” Ruiz said, noting that they always want to reach out to the community, whether it’s through food or music.

Grimes agreed.

“It doesn’t matter what you look like, this community is part of your identity,” Grimes said.

Throughout the Kermes Celebration, a number of ethnic dances and live entertainment was showcased.

“I want everyone in our community to always feel welcome in our school,” said Colleen Seneker, another committee member for this year’s event.

Grimes agreed.

“If you don’t feel embraced by the public spaces in your community, how can you thrive?” he said.

“Every community that’s thriving, the people in that community feel embraced and accepted and loved for who they are.”

Troy 30-C community supports annual run Students, staff and parents raise funds for rewards program through participating in Color-A-Thon

Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C brought a dash of color to the community April 20, during its Color-A-Thon.

In its second year, the color run aimed not only to excite children and their families, but also to raise funds to incentivize students for doing well in school.

“It’s great for us because we do it to bring the kids together,” said Jennifer Prosise, chairwoman for this year’s race. “Because we have kids in the fifth- and sixth-grade building and the seventh- and eighth-grade building, so they don’t get to stay together. This is our way of bringing our kids [of William B. Orenic and Troy Middle schools] together and the families of the students for a fun event.”

The race, originally planned for April 6, was rescheduled due to weather. None of this deterred participants last week from running with flying colors.

“It is great because there is nicer weather,” Prosise said of the

event’s timing. “It’s like a precursor for what’s to come for summer.”

The race, held at William B. Orenic Intermediate School, is not timed. Spectators lined the grassy areas surrounding the racecourse to snap pictures during the event, and others watched on as people participated in the color run.

Crest Hill’s Bradley Price ran alongside three of his four children during the event.

“It was super fun,” he said. “My favorite part was throwing the color in the air at the last minute.”

Price said knowing the District hosted the color run for the second year in a row was huge.

“It’s definitely important to support the school district,” he said.

“It’d be great if not just the parents of students were involved in the school district but [having] the entire community would be great.

So, anything that can be more of a community event is great.”

Prosise said the race does a wonderful job of bringing the community together.

“We also get younger siblings that come out,” she said. “[Stu-

dents] are also able to bring their friends with them and their friends get to run.”

The race served, in part, as a fundraiser for William B. Orenic and Troy Middle schools. Students earn incentives throughout the academic year to reward good behavior.

“This helps pay for those rewards,” Prosise said.

Students earn access to assemblies, inflatables and the Wacky Olympics.

A number of parents participated in this year’s Color-A-Thon, much like they had last year.

“Last year, I did [the color run] as a parent,” Prosise said. “There was a lot of parents last year. I think the kids are always looking for something that mom and dad can play with them, and this is a great event for that.”

Dozens of participants threw colored powder in the air as they celebrated at the end of the event.

Shorewood’s Debbie Carpenter

was meeting up with her son after the race. “[Seeing] him running around with his friends, the face, the smile, all the color on him, I think he’s having a good time,” she said.

This year was Carpenter’s first time attending the Color-A-Thon.

She said she is looking forward to coming out for the color run next year, should the District decide to hold another one.

“I think it’s great to support the schools,” Carpenter said.

Troy school introduces yoga to students Yoga Club a hit with William B. Orenic Intermediate School students Yoga is a way for young people to get exercise and increase their core strength and flexibility, while learning a new way to focus and relax, according to William B. Orenic Intermediate School teacher and Yoga Club sponsor Jennifer Lipa.

Lipa introduced the club to the Troy District 30-C school last year and found it was a popular offering, so she continued it this year.

The club meets twice a week in the spring.

“You can work on your mind and your body with yoga,” she

said. “It’s a club where the students can be athletic without being competitive. They compete against their own expectations and try to be better versions of themselves.”

“I had previous experience with yoga, and I liked it a lot,” he said. “I find it quite relaxing.”

Fifth-grader Hailey and sixthgrader Breana said doing yoga helps them relax. Fifth-grader Payton said she has done yoga before and enjoys it. Balancing is the most difficult part of the activity, she said.

Lipa, who is also a yoga sculpt instructor, said she begins the club with easier poses, such as child’s pose and mountain. The club then moves into more difficult poses like crescent and tree.

The more advanced poses include Crow and Dancer.

Students are on different levels at various times, and Lipa said the class is very non-judgmental and accepting. If a student cannot do a particular pose, a coach will help them or suggest a different one.

W.B.O. teacher Caitlin Dalton is assistant coach of the Yoga Club, and guest teachers are brought in frequently, such as Diana Kincaid, who teaches at Rush Copley and Core Power Yoga.

Illinois rivers helped feed economic growth in state Illinois, Mississippi Rivers serving as economic engines for transportation of goods continues

BY JOSEPH BUSTOS OF THE BELLEVILLE NEWSDEMOCRAT During the first century of the state’s history, the natural habitats along the Illinois River helped spur fishing industries and had places for hunting.

The Illinois River was a habitat for bottom-feeding fish such as catfish, common carp and smallmouth buffalo as well as mussels.

The abundance of fish led to a commercial fishing industry between Havana and Meredosia, according to the state museum.

Towns had their own markets that processed and shipped fish to large Midwestern and Eastern cities from the 1890s to the 1950s.

Sport hunters formed clubs and bought land along the Illinois River to start duck hunting resorts managed by locals, according to the state museum.

However, there also was a demand to be able to transport goods, which changed life along the river.

Reports in the 1830s said the river wasn’t navigable in 70 to 80 places during the low-water months. A canal was eventually built between LaSalle and Chicago.

“The canal was instrumental in Chicago’s growth,” said Michael Wiant, the interim director for the Illinois State Museum. “There’s a recognition there, navigability on the river would give vitality to the economy of Illinois.”

Towns along the Illinois River, such as Naples, Grafton, Peoria and Beardstown, are the earliest communities in the region to be established. Ottawa had deposits of silica sand, that would be transported into Chicago for construction.

“You could begin to see the river as an artery that literally feeds the heart of the city,” Wiant said.

Levees eventually were built along waterways to keep the river in place, and maintain a channel.

That infrastructure decision also eventually drained floodplains and backwater habitats, which led to those areas becoming land for row-crop agriculture.

“The river is largely, by the early part of the 20th century, engineered to handle that transportation issue that is having vitality,” Wiant said. “But it comes at a price of not only the natural powerhouse of the backwater lakes, things like commercial fishing industries are affected negatively.

It changes the character of the river profoundly.”

Natural habitats for ducks, fish and mussels were negatively affected and populations crashed, Wiant said. Eventually there were wildlife refuges established to give habitat to ducks to try to keep those population.

“To maintain navigation, you need stable water levels. To get stable water levels you need locks and dams. To keep the channel in place you need levees,” Wiant said. “Levees then cut off the backwater lakes from the natural hydrology of the river, and while you’re producing agricultural commodities, which are good things to be sure, the price you’re paying, the natural habitats are deteriorated.”

Using the Illinois River, as well as the Mississippi River, as economic engines for the transportation of goods continues today.

In recent years, there has been an effort to increase the amount of commodities and goods that are moved down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

America’s Central Port has been awarded a $713,000 federal grant to help load containers on the Illinois River at Beardstown.

The containers would be sent to Chicago to be loaded onto trains, or to St. Louis where containers would be placed on trains, or continue down the Mississippi River on barges to New Orleans. The project is still in the planning stages.

Cargill has grain elevators along the Illinois river, in locations such as Havana. Barges are loaded and then sent down the river and eventually connected to the Mississippi River where they head toward the Gulf of Mexico where they are then shipped around the world to places such as Europe and Japan.

They do an incredible amount of transportation of grain from that point.”

According to the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, nearly $5 billion in annual revenue and 20,000 jobs are generated by commercial navigation on the Mississippi River.

In 2015, 35 million tons of goods moved on the Mississippi River through the St. Louis area, according to data provided by the St. Louis Regional Freightway, which is a freight district and comprehensive authority for freight operations and opportunities within eight counties that compose the St. Louis metropolitan area.

“It’s a combination that adds up to the St. Louis region having inexpensive barge freight rates for the handling of fertilizer, steel, manufactured goods, coal, petroleum products and agricultural commodities,” said Mary Lamie, executive director of the freightway.

The St. Louis area, and the freightway district, has touted how one-third of all the river freight traffic from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Cairo, Illinois, goes through the St. Louis region.

The St. Louis Regional Freightway is promoting the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri as the “Ag Coast.” Ports in the St. Louis area are the northernmost ice-free and lockfree access ports to and from the Gulf of Mexico.

Local transport options improve area travel Gateway Center in Joliet, Park-n-Ride in Plainfield to enhance Will County public transportation experience

Suburban living may be convenient in terms of housing, retail options, and proximity to a major metropolitan area. However, one thing Will County may struggle with is public transportation.

But, changes in the area’s transport options are poised to increase mobility this year.

On April 11, the new Gateway Center opened up to travelers in Joliet, providing a new, state of the art train station for Amtrak and Metra passengers.

With the move, Amtrak service has now moved to the new site at 90 E. Jefferson St. The facility serves the Amtrak Texas Eagle and Lincoln Service trains, as well as daily Metra service on the Rock Island line to Chicago, and Monday through Friday service on Metra’s Heritage Corridor route.

Riders are pleased to see the new $51 million station open, which better accommodates those with special needs versus the track-level Amtrak depot that has been in use for the past few years.

“It will be easier for me because I do have a disability and the new facility will allow me to exit to meet my family much easier, plus my

family will have an easier picking me up street side,” said Amy Edwards, a resident of downstate Edwardsville who frequently uses Amtrak to visit relatives in Joliet.

Edwards said the new state-ofthe-art station allows her and others to have a better travel experience.

“The platform being level with train will really help me while exiting and entering the train, even with the step stool, it was a pretty big step for me to make, especially exiting the train when the handrail ends, and I had to depend on the conductor to hold my hand to keep my balance,” Edwards said. “Plus, the elevator will be awesome. One time I arrived and was on crutches, I had a bag and it was hard enough getting off the train, but I had to wait in the cold until my sister arrived and could get up to the platform to help me down. The new facility will definitely give people with disabilities more freedom to move around without help.”

The train station upgrade was first launched in 2010 and was constructed under the direction of the Illinois Department of Transportation. Plans to add bus service from the site were part of the original concept plan, but that service is still under discussion.

While the station’s doors are

now open, some street closures remain, and the temporary Amtrak station has yet to be removed.

Parking near the site also has yet to be completed. A museum is also planned for the upper floor of the new facility.

The site’s official grand opening is set for June 6.

Meanwhile, in Plainfield, work continues on the new PACE Parkn-Ride facility. The facility will accommodate a new bus depot for PACE, the suburban bus division of the Regional Transportation Authority.

The extended cold weather this spring has caused a handful of mi-

nor delays at the site, but city officials report that as of this week, the water mains and sanitary sewer system have all been completed, as well as the storm water management for the site, including the storm sewer and detention basin.

Work on Van Dyke Road, including widening and installation of a traffic signal, is slated to kick off in the next few weeks, as is construction of the shelter and restrooms.

The parking lot is expected to be completed and operational by July. The shelter is set to be done by September, as long as the weather cooperates.

The scope of the project in-

cludes a 600-space parking lot, a new stoplight and entrance drive, and a shelter with washrooms included as part of the bus depot.

The land is part of a previous purchase of 58 acres of farm land made by the village over a decade ago. The land was originally set to accommodate the now defunct Suburban Transit Access Route (STAR) Line Railway project.

The park-and-ride will utilize about 10 acres of the site. The additional acreage is expected to be developed via a public-private partnership, with flexible zoning to accommodate industrial and business uses.

When the Joliet Catholic Academy baseball team creates its baseball schedule – it does so to set up a schedule to prepare the team for the difficult road it faces when the IHSA playoffs roll around.

This season, however, it may be one of the toughest.

While the opponents haven’t changed much this year, the added challenge comes in the form of Mother Nature.

With the weather cancelling games or forcing games to be moved, the Hillmen will have its schedule – or as much as can be salvaged – compressed into the last few weeks of the season.

“These kids just want to play,” said Joliet Catholic coach Jared Voss. “It is tough going back inside and trying to get creative with the practices, but really – they just want to compete. It is

about them and I feel bad when games are getting cancelled or we are losing games. We have a short window to get 35 (games) in and they want to play all 35.”

The Hillmen currently sit at 12-3 on the season, including going 2-0 in the Prep Baseball Report Midwest Select in Indianapolis, beating Jackson out of Massillon, OH 12-2 and Cathedral from Indianapolis 6-4.

“They will be battle tested and we have to. We had great competition in Indianapolis with Ohio and Cathedral from Indiana and that is what the guys wanted,” Voss said. “They wanted a major league baseball schedule and with the way our conference is set up and what we can do in this area out of conference – we can’t ask for much better.”

USF duo qualifies for NAIA track nationals Both Jenna Moody (Joliet, Ill./ Plainfield Central) and Celina Mayforth (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) posted NAIA “A” qualifying standards in the 400-meter dash at the Al Owens Classic.

Moody took fourth (56.52 seconds) and Mayforth placed sixth (56.79) in the 400 meters. The times were the ninth and 14thbest marks in the NAIA this season. Moody also finished fourth in

the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 12.32 seconds.

Some Saints also participated in throwing events at the ConcordiaChicago Cougar Invitational over the weekend. Brittany Bodnar (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) highlighted USF’s performance by posting an NAIA “B” qualifying standard in the hammer throw (49.69 meters).

Taylor Conroy (Marengo, Ill./ Marengo) and University of St. Francis’ 1,600-meter relay team added points for the Saints’ women’s track squad at the Al Owens Classic. Conroy took seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:40.04), while the 1,600-meter relay team placed eighth (4:05.94).

The relay team consisted of four freshmen, Mayforth, Eva Bruno (Marseilles, Ill./Seneca), Veronica Navarrete (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West), and Sabrina Baftiri (Morris, Ill./Morris).

As a team, the Saints totaled 11 points to place 14th out of 25 teams.

USF will split between a pair of meets next weekend. Some will travel to Drake University of the Drake Relays while others will head back to Michigan for the Hillsdale Gina Relays. Both meets are April 26-28.

SOFTBALL The University of St. Francis softball team launched four home runs in taking both ends of a twin bill from Trinity Christian College.

The Saints (26-6, 15-1 CCAC) extended their winning streak to 10 with the 7-0 and 9-8 wins over the Trolls (13-22, 6-12 CCAC), USF 7, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 0 Kayla Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), Katelyn Rolniak (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) and Brooke Karraker (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) all homered in support of Taylor Barsz’s (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) complete game shutout as the Saints took game one 7-0.

After a scoreless first inning, Garcia led off the second by blasting her sixth home run of the season. Jensen Tchorzynski (Hillman, Mich./Hillman) followed with a double and then Hailey Lenth (Colona, Ill./United Township) was hit by a pitch, putting two on for Rolniak’s three-run shot that pushed the Saints ahead 4-0.

Barsz put together another stellar start, surrendering just three hits and never allowing a TCC runner to reach third base.

Lenth scored another run in the fifth. She doubled to lead off the inning and came home on Anna Wetherell’s (Rock Island, Ill./Alleman)single. USF added two more in the sixth on Karraker’s fifth long ball of the year to round out the 7-0 score. Wetherell, Balandis, Garcia and Tchorzynski all chipped in with at least two of USF’s 12 hits.

USF 9, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 8 Ashley Galason (Burbank, Ill./ Reavis) provided a go-ahead double in the sixth inning to help the Saints win a high scoring, backand-forth contest 9-8.

The Saints led by as much as five in the game but the Trolls scored six unanswered runs to take an 8-7 lead through five innings.

In the sixth, Karraker, Ally Balandis (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) and Garcia all reached base with nobody out. Tchorzynski tied the game by lifting a sacrifice fly to left. The next batter, Galason, hit a double to left center that scored Balandis and put the Saints back in front 9-8.

Tchorzynski, who started at pitcher for the Saints but was replaced by Barsz after the first inning, returned to the circle with the game on the line. She shut down the Trolls, surrendering just one walk in the final two frames to earn the save.

for available arms – something Voss joked could leave the lower level coaches upset with their varsity counterparts.

“There is going to be a breaking point somewhere, but I assume a lot of teams are in the same boat. There will be some interesting games,” Voss said.

“The lower levels may get the shaft here real soon because varsity needs to take a guy. My lower level coaches may not be talking to me.”

If the JCA offense keeps up its pace, the pitching may not matter.

BASEBALL John Riordan (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) threw a complete game shutout to help the University of St. Francis baseball team win the rubber match of its three-game series with Saint Xavier University 2-0.

Riordan (4-4) allowed just six hits and three walks while striking out five in his team-leading fourth complete game of the season. The Cougars (19-25, 14-10 CCAC) did not have a runner reach third base in the ballgame.

The Saints (24-20, 14-10 CCAC) scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning.

John Peterson (Palos Heights, Ill./ St. Laurence) recorded one of his three hits of the day on a single to center and then Riordan walked.

Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch for Travis Schoonover (Braidwood, Ill./Reed-Custer) who beat out an infield single that scored Peterson.

Riordan crossed the plate on another wild pitch later in the inning to give USF a 2-0 lead.

Saints Xavier reliever Kyle Sabie pitched very well for the Cougars, keeping USF scoreless through his 6.1 innings. Starting pitcher Logan Demato took the loss. SXU’s Cameron Powell went 4-for-4 at the plate.

TENNIS Sofia Scholl (Korntal, Germany) took out the No. 31-ranked singles player in the nation as the University of St. Francis women’s tennis team lost to Cardinal Stritch 8-1.

Scholl needed a third-set super tiebreaker to slip past Antonia Elze 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. It is the second time this season that a Saint has defeated a nationally ranked opponent. Merle Schlaeger (Hanau, Germany) took out No. 9 Lizzie Bauss of Indiana Wesleyan on February 24.

No. 8 Cardinal Stritch (11-6, 6-0 CCAC) swept the three doubles contests. At No. 1, Scholl and Eva Lopez (Zaragoza, Spain) pushed the 19th-ranked duo of Assya Trimari and Chelsea Kelly but fell 8-5.

The Wolves clinched the match with wins at Nos. 6 and 4. With the Saints (8-12, 5-2 CCAC) trailing 7-0, Scholl came through with her three-set win to put USF on the board. That left Lopez as the final player on court and she dropped a tight No. 3 singles match 7-6(4), 6-3.

The Saints have qualified for next week’s CCAC Tournament along with Cardinal Stritch, Olivet Nazarene and Judson. The semifinals will take place on Wednesday, April 25 with the finals set for Friday, April 27.

In a rare Sunday game, the Hillmen went with Tyrell to the mound.

Although he had to leave the game due to the IHSA mandatory 105-pitch rule with two outs in the sixth, Tyrell allowed only two hits and a first inning run while striking out seven and walking just one, to improve to 5-0 on the mound this season.

Saints end at nationals The University of St. Francis women’s bowling team went 2-2 in bracket play to tie for seventh place at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships.

This is the second-best finish for the Saints on the ITC national stage, just behind USF’s 201415 team that placed third.

St. Francis’ squad consisted of Dana Ackerson (Crest Hill, Ill./ Lockport), Jessica Halas (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Schaumburg), Sarah Klawitter (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park), Autumn Lee (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central), Abby Ragsdale (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East), Jordan Tirtilli (Morris, Ill./Morris), Nicole

Troha (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and Kiersten Vandenburg (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport).

This season, USF recorded top-10 finishes in all of its 13 events with four titles.

The Saints earned their first ever Tier I championship at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational and also came out on top at the USBC ITC Smyrna Sectional.

Tony Talley was named the NAIA Bowling Coaches Association Women’s Bowling Coach of the Year and Troha brought in All-America honors from the NAIA (first-team) and the National Collegiate Bowling Association (second-team).

Don’t take on more debt to fulfill promise DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are just starting Baby Step 1 of your plan. Prior to this, we told my two nephews we would buy them laptop computers for college. They don’t get a lot of encouragement or support from their immediate family, so we try to help them when we can. Should we go ahead and honor this commitment, postpone getting our starter emergency fund in place, and possibly take on a little more debt, or bow out of the agreement?

LISA DEAR LISA, Well, it’s difficult to be generous when you’re broke. You don’t even have $1,000 to your names, and you’re going to buy two laptops?

I don’t know how much debt you have, or what your household income is, but I do know neither of you have managed your money very well in the past.

If you make $50,000 a year, and you have $70,000 in debt, you should sincerely and apologetically bow out. Explain that you made a big mistake, and just be honest about why you can’t provide the laptops. If you make $200,000 a year, but you’ve just been incredibly silly and lazy with your money, you should buy the laptops and then get serious about growing up and getting control of your finances. Don’t make promises, financial or otherwise, you can’t keep. I know this is a tough, embarrassing situation, but it’s what I would do if I were in your shoes.

ROMEO DEAR ROMEO, That’s a tough one. I’m not cer-

tain they would depreciate like a trailer, but I don’t think they would go up in value much, either.

Anytime there’s a very limited demand for something, the price or value doesn’t generally increase.

And there are very few people looking to buy tiny homes. The tiny home movement is kind of a niche thing. It’s a very narrow market, and something that doesn’t have a lot of demand isn’t going to appreciate.

I would avoid the tiny house movement if I were you, Romeo.

Don’t invest in things that don’t have proven track records and don’t go up in value. I love real estate, but not tiny real estate.
