During a March Joliet city council meeting, councilwoman Jan Quillman urged city officials to address traffic conditions at the intersection of Great Ridge Drive and Theodore Street.

Eighteen accidents have been reported at the intersection between January 2013 and February 2016, and now the city is hoping to curb trafficrelated incidents by installing traffic signals. A public service committee report discussed at the April 5 council meeting revealed that city staff is planning to correct the issues at Theodore and Great Ridge.

In 2010, city staff first studied the traffic patterns along Theodore Street and recommended the introduction of a system of traffic signals. One of these installations is already in place at the intersection of Theodore Street and River Road.

City staff said three more signals are needed to assist in

the coordination of traffic at Wesmere Parkway, Drauden Road and County Line Road.

Once monies become available, the city is expect to finish the installation of traffic signals, which will not require city council approval. The project is expected to be funded using monies allotted toward the 2017 and 2018 municipal budgets.

Scribner St. roadway improvement Also at the April 5 meeting, the city moved forward with plans to improve roadway conditions on Scribner Street.

After receiving five bids for the construction effort in March, the city decided to back a $477,873.30 lowest bid from Austin-Tyler Construction.

Officials will pay for the project using a community block grant and property owner funds after approving the 2015 roadway construction program.

The measure allows the city to finish a portion of the project along Scribner Street.

Although officials view the Rialto Square Theatre as a city jewel, the theatre will not receive preferential treatment when it comes to forming an intergovernmental agreement with the city of Joliet.

The Joliet City Council last week voted down a series of measures that would have allowed the city’s inspector general to perform an investigation of the Rialto’s finances in exchange for the release of funds associated with an annual subsidy paid by the city to the theater.

Officials voted 5-3 against approving the intergovernmental agreement as is, thus paving the way for another action item that addressed whether the city would hire an accounting firm to conduct a review of the theatre’s finances. A motion to approve the agreement with changes also failed in a 5-3 vote.

Now, the future of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which owns and operates the theater, remains uncertain.

Without support and intervention, city officials said the Rialto could be forced to close its doors due to years of mismanagement. The city allotted $600,000 to the Rialto in the form of an annual subsidy, which is typically released on a quarterly basis.To date, the city has forwarded $160,000 to the Joliet theatre. Last month, city officials were approached by the Rialto and asked to cover payments for two upcoming fall shows, which are expected to cost approximately $200,000.

As part of the intergovernmental agreement, officials were looking for an agreed upon auditor to be put in place during the city inspector general’s investigation of the Rialto’s finances. Some members of the city council expressed concerns about approving the agreement based on accountability, transparency and liability issues.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman said she was upset that hardly anyone from the Rialto Board was present for the city council meeting.

“I’m just disappointed because this is it,” she said of the attendance at last week’s city council meeting.

“This is it and no one’s here, except

for these folks here.”

The finance committee for the WCMEAA Board also met April 5, where it laid out a copy of its draft audit detailing the financial position of the Joliet theatre.

After reviewing the information issued by the Rialto, councilman John Gerl said he thinks city action is needed to help the Rialto move forward. He questioned the lengths to which city officials seemed willing to go to address the matter.

Gerl added that the council is acting as if the Rialto has done something grossly negligent.

Mayor Bob O’DeKirk said he recognized that his colleagues have concerns, adding that he agrees with some of them.

“If we don’t act on this … I think it’s a fair assumption they’re going to close their doors,” he said.

“They need our help; we’re not in a position to give it with what we what know.”

O’DeKirk said he supports the idea of forming an intergovernmental agreement with the Rialto but added that he’s certain the council won’t approve of the matter until answers to its questions are provided.

Councilwoman Bettye Gavin was one of several city officials questioning whether the city should step in financially, given the current state of the Rialto.

“I think with a large part of the investment that the city does and with public funds, we have to protect our residents as well,” she said. “I just can’t understand, maybe it’s just me… If you’re needing these funds and you’re coming to request them and you’re not being as transparent and accountable as possible, it shows to me that you don’t really need them.”

She added that she’s not in agreement with giving the Rialto anything until they’ve shown they’re willing to fully cooperate with the investigation.

Councilman Jim McFarland voted against the effort to help the Rialto. He said the city cannot afford to pursue the intergovernmental agreement, citing a number of “unknowns” with the Rialto’s finances. “I think at this time it’s a waste of time to hire professional accounting services,” McFarland said. He added that it would make more sense to bring on board a business consultant who could provide some oversight.

Waves of discovery Historic discovery sheds light on universe, importance of federally funded research Editor’s Note: The first direct observation of gravitational waves Sept. 14, 2015, was a Nobel Prizeworthy discovery that not only confirmed Albert Einstein’s theories on general relativity, but ushered in a new epoch in our ability to study and understand the universe.

This multipart series will explore the importance of federal investment in a curiosity driven pursuit 50 years in the making, and ask local leaders and those close to the project how something infinitesimally small could send such enormous shockwaves through the scientific community.

I

n February, the U.S. House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology committee held a special hearing to discuss the recent detection of gravitational waves by scientists working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory.

Among the representatives in attendance during that meeting was Congressman Bill Foster.

The Illinois Democrat holds rank among his colleagues as the only Ph.D. scientist in Congress. As a former high-energy physicist and particle accelerator designer, Foster took the opportunity to make his excitement over the historic discovery known to everyone who attended the Feb. 24 hearing.

“This is a discovery that will live on in the science textbooks forever,” he told the committee.

“And with this discovery, we have opened a new window into the universe, we have verified that our new telescope is working and now the fun begins.”

Foster is no stranger to milestone discoveries. While working on his Ph.D. thesis, Foster became a member of a team that detected a neutrino burst from supernova SN 1987A. That discovery earned the team the 1989 Bruno Rossi Prize for cosmic ray physics. While working at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, he was a member of the team that discovered the top

quark – the heaviest known form of matter.

And while the current political climate often places balanced budgets over long-term science and research goals, Foster said the LIGO project is an example of federal investment in scientific research paying remarkable dividends.

“Twenty-five years after the National Science Foundation began courageous and sustained funding for [LIGO] to begin constructing this large and technically risky project, physicists have spectacularly confirmed Einstein’s theory,” he added.

The historic discovery that came from that investment has received praise from both sides of the aisle and it is one that Foster believes worthy of the Nobel Prize.

When the Bugle sat down with him to discuss the recent discovery and the future of LIGO, the 11th District congressman shared his thoughts on the intersection of science and politics and stated just how important he feels curiosity driven research is to the future of our country and our world.

“Deciding what fragment of your GDP you reserve for curiosity driven research or art or the other things that you do for your country so that you can be proud of it is essentially a political decision,” Foster said. “But, there’s also an indirect, but important, benefit to getting the next generation of students excited about science.”

On the shoulders of giants To be clear, gravitational waves weren’t actually “discovered” by LIGO researchers, who on Sept.

14, 2015, detected infinitesimal fluctuations in the fabric of spacetime.

The tiny vibrations detected

by twin LIGO interferometers in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington, were caused by the collision of two massive black holes 1.3 billion years ago. That collision produced an enormous amount of energy in the form of gravitational waves, which traveled away from their source near the speed of light on a billionyear journey toward earth.

LIGO is a system of two identical detectors located almost 2,000 miles apart. Each detector consists of two 4-kilometer-long vacuum tubes, arranged in an L-shape, through which scientists send laser beams capable of detecting the gravitational waves.

By a stroke of luck, the gravitational waves produced by the collision of these two black holes passed through earth just as LIGO scientists turned on their equipment.

“They were actually not quite started with the official data taking run,” Foster said. “They were just tuning [the equipment] up, when all of a sudden this signal arrived.”

For the first time, scientists had made direct observation of gravitational waves, thus confirming some of the fundamental features of Albert Einstein’s field equations on general relativity.

Gravitational waves had been theorized by Einstein in 1916, and scientists have been working ever since to detect the tiny ripples created during large cosmic collisions. In 1974, the discovery of a pair of neutron stars 21,000 light years away offered the first evidence of gravitational waves.

However, the story of LIGO goes back even further.

“If Einstein was still alive, I would have loved to have shown him the data; I would have loved to have seen what his expression would have been,” said Rainer Weiss, a professor emeritus of physics at MIT and the brains behind LIGO. Beginning with a thought experiment he proposed to students in a course he was

teaching on general relativity in the 1967, Weiss soon demonstrated that a laser interferometer could, in theory, detect gravitational waves. Eventually, he completed the invention of an interferometric gravitational wave detector – a 1.5-meter prototype of what later became LIGO. “Rai Weiss is an old friend of mine and quite likely to end up winning the Nobel Prize for this,” Foster said.

The story of how this prototype eventually led to one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century unfolded over the next four decades. Scientists had been hunting for gravitational waves ever since Einstein first hypothesized their existence.

But, Foster said it was Weiss who realized that it was conceivable

to use available technologies to construct an instrument with the necessary sensitivity to detect the tiny waves.

“Then, he spent the next 20 years getting someone to fund bigger and bigger prototypes,” Foster added.

A remarkable scientific achievement in its own right, the detection of gravitational waves would not have been possible without funding from the National Science Foundation.

“That is the big reason why we made this big whoop de doo about this discovery,” Weiss said. “NSF was fundamental to this whole thing.”

Part two of this series will explore how LIGO benefited from federal funding, as well as the different ways this discovery could shape the next generation of scientists.

Khouri wins 11th District nomination Republican will face incumbent Bill Foster in November election

Official results confirm Tonia Khouri as the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District after the March 15 primary election.

After all provisional and mailin votes were tabulated by the March 29 deadline, only 370 votes separated Khouri and Nick Stella.

Herman White finished third in the race.

Because the vote tallies were so close on election night, Stella was reluctant to concede the race until all provisional ballots were counted. He has now publicly given his support to Khouri.

“I have had such a wonderful

experience meeting and speaking with so many residents, business owners and voters throughout the 11th Congressional District,” Stella wrote on his campaign’s Facebook page. “These people deserve better representation than the current seat holder Bill Foster, and better representation for the citizens and companies of Congressional District 11 is why I entered this

race. I want to congratulate Tonia Khouri, who has won the primary to be the next Republican nominee for the Illinois 11th Congressional District. As Tonia and I agreed to do earlier in this race - that regardless of the outcome, we would support one another, and I plan to keep my word.”

Khouri will face Democratic incumbent Bill Foster in the upcoming general election.

“I’m grateful to the voters in the 11th district for putting their trust in me. I’m thankful to Nick Stella and Herman White for running cordial campaigns and giving me their full support to win in November,” Khouri said. “This is an important election. Washington is a dysfunctional mess… I’m going to Washington to bring a fresh energy, new ideas, and independent solutions to the problems that face our country.”

Khouri, a small business owner from Aurora, also serves as the chairmanofeconomicdevelopment on the DuPage County Board. Her campaign stressed her record of opposing all tax increases while in that capacity, as well as voting against increasing the salaries of county elected officials.

“I’m confident that the people in the 11th district will see this race for what it is: a choice between the solutions this country needs, or the old, tired Washington status quo,” said Khouri.

Illinois’ 11th Congressional District includes portions of Will, DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Cook counties. The district stretches from Chicago’s western suburbs to two of Illinois’ largest cities – Aurora and Joliet.

Joliet Cyborgs advance to robotics world championship Team has set up a GoFundMe account to accept donations for championship Joliet Township High School District 204’s Cyborgs robotics team and its robot, PALADIN, have advanced to the FIRST Robotics World Championship which will be held April 29-30 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Joliet Cyborgs have been competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2011 and advanced to the FIRST Robotics Competition finals as a member of the Number 2 seed alliance at the Midwest Regional held on April 2.

“PALADIN performed like a pro at the Midwest Regional,” said JTHS Project Director Carol Collins. “In the medieval setting of this year’s game, FIRST Stronghold, the robot traversed the rough terrain, moat, drawbridge, Rockwall, sally port,

ramparts and catapulted boulders through the tower window to assist its three-robot alliance in the capture of their opponents’ castle.”

The Cyborg’s seed 2 alliance consisted of Team 111, Wildstang; Team 2338, Gear It Forward; and Team 4241.

“It was a strong alliance that won the quarterfinal and semifinal matches,” said Collins.

“However, they competed in the finals and lost to the Number 1 seed alliance: the only matches of the day the Joliet Cyborgs lost.”

But despite the loss, the Cyborgs advanced.

“Due to our robot PALADIN’s skills, the judges awarded the Joliet Cyborgs the Wild Card spot, giving them the chance to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition

World Championship,” explained Collins. “I am so proud of the students and their mentors who dedicated hours of expertise to assist with the robot’s construction.”

As the Cyborgs prepare for the World Championship, they are seeking funding to offset costs associated with the event.

“Vulcan Materials Company, Caterpillar, NRG Energy and KWM Gutterman have generously donating to our team but we still have a long way to go,” said Collins.

The Cyborgs have set up a GoFundMe account to accept donations.

“This is the first time they are going to the World Championship,” said Collins.

“We are sure it won’t be the last time! But we need your help to get there.”

Joliet mall to hold May carnival

A carnival is coming to the Louis Joliet Mall for five days from May 11-15.

North American Midway Entertainment and Astro Amusement will set up shop at the Joliet mall for the event, which will offer attendees food, carnival rides and games. The event’s hours of operation will vary from day to day.

On May 11 and May 12, the carnival will be open to the public

from 5:30-10 p.m. The next day, the carnival will be held between 5:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. The carnival will be open from 1-11:30 p.m.

May 14 and 1-10 p.m. May 15.

Carnival staff said they are not aware of any incidences occurring when reviewing past events held over the years. Arrangements have been made with the Joliet Police Department to coordinate security efforts, city staff said.

Every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first contacting JULIE. Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, and planting a tree or garden are all examples of digging projects.

The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons, such as erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces.

From Bolingbrook, Illinois …

Those three simple words echoed through Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis April 5 and probably fell on a lot of deaf ears.

There is a good chance that most of the 14,514 fans didn’t pay very much attention to the hometown of University of Connecticut superstar Morgan Tuck.

You can bet her friends and family in attendance did, I’m sure the ears of Raider fans watching at home perked up when they heard their city announced.

I know at least one Tweet was sent out calling attention to the fact that a player from our area was on the biggest stage in

her sport on the brink of making NCAA history (I know that fact because, well, I sent it).

For those residents of Bolingbrook, students in the Valley View school system, even readers from Joliet, Lisle or Morton Grove who didn’t watch the game, didn’t even know it was on or did and just didn’t care – do yourself a favor - watch the highlights, read the articles, get to know Morgan Tuck the player, as well as Morgan Tuck the person, and be proud she is one of your own.

This is someone from the Voyager Media circulation area who made it – someone who could have been your classmate, may be your neighbor and should be your role model.

With an 82-51 win over Syracuse, UConn became the first women’s basketball program ever to win fourstraight national championships, while Tuck joined fellow seniors Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson as the first

players – men or women – to ever earn four championships in a career.

The road wasn’t easy for Tuck, who suffered through knee injuries in high school as well as in her first two years in college – even losing most of her sophomore season at UConn to knee surgery.

After missing five games this season because of knee pain, Tuck was quoted as saying doctors told her she has the knee of a middle aged woman. That ultimately led to her decision to forego the extra year of eligibility she was granted after her sophomore campaign.

Despite being a superbly gifted athlete – it is the hard work that she put into her rehab to get past the setbacks to get the most out of her talents that is the most impressive part of Tuck’s career.

Even back to high school, the accolades never went to her to head.

The day Tuck played her final game in a Bolingbrook uniform – the only IHSA playoff loss of her career – she was

Hospital volunteers: selfless donors of time and talent For as long as there have been individuals in need of healthcare, there have been those moved by compassion to help any way they can.

They are hospital volunteers – selfless donors of their time and talent, who share our values of honesty, oneness, people and excellence. National Volunteer Week, recognized April 10 through 16, is designated as a time to recognize these special, truly good hearted individuals and to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism.

week, I attended the wake of a local union leader. Both had huge crowds.

A few suits and ties, some elected officials, but largely men and women who are paid by the hour, hundreds and hundreds of them. Their affection, appreciation and awe for what the two leaders accomplished during decades of service was plain.

If Bruce Rauner gets his way, bonds like those never will be forged. There will be no union halls, union meetings, union picnics, union rallies, union parades, union sports leagues, union

conferences or union conventions. A whole swath of community life will be gone.

Illinoisans deserve a state government which is efficient, productive, and respectful of our values. I and my colleagues in both parties are eager to work toward that. But the governor’s disturbing mix of a superficial knowledge of unions and an obsession with doing away with them has Illinois stuck.

Center, we are especially grateful for the 526 dedicated volunteers who gave 70,537 hours to our ministry in 2015.

Each job they perform enables us to provide our patients and guests the highest level of quality health care with an exceptional level of trust, compassion and kindness.

Our volunteers play a critical role in our ability to keep caregivers by the bedside. They do meaningful work that may otherwise take our specialized associates away from their primary roles in providing acute or chronic care. In this way, and others, volunteers have a true and powerful impact on the excellent care we are able to provide at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

In addition to the impact felt by our patients and visitors, volunteers inspire

our staff with their willingness and ability to give freely of themselves in the service of others.

Although we are able to count the number of volunteers and hours served in our ministry, the impact they deliver throughout our hospital, or entire organization and the community we serve together is immeasurable. Bolingbrook’s Tuck helps UConn to 4th straight NCAA title

INDIANAPOLIS – Morgan Tuck has always been a winner.

The 6-foot, 2-inch Bolingbrook native won three IHSA Class 4A state titles with the Raiders, she was twice named Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year and has helped Team USA claim four gold medals in International competition.

However, with an 82-51 win over Syracuse April 5, Tuck took winning to a historic level.

She scored 19 points in the win and added seven rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot, helping the University of Connecticut claim its fourthstraight NCAA title – the first time that has ever been done since the women’s NCAA tournament began in 1982.

“This has been our goal since we came here,” Tuck said. “Since we were freshmen, we’ve wanted this for so long, and to be able to do it – get four in a row – that’s just special right there. We just love each other. We love being around each other. We have so much fun with each other off the court and it translates really well on the court. We work extremely hard – in the summer, preseason – and all that work paid off.”

The win was the 11th championship for the school – placing the Huskies in a tie with the UCLA men for most ever NCAA Division-I basketball titles.

“That’s very special. Some of the best players to ever play the women’s game came to UConn and we have the best coach ever,”

Tuck said. “The other players paved the way and do so much for us, and it’s great that we can be part of a great legacy.”

Even more historic is the fact that Tuck and fellow seniors Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson become the first players – men or women – to ever earn four championships in a career.

Only the UCLA men’s team won more than four in a row, claiming seven titles from 1967 to 1973, but because freshmen were not eligible to compete, no player was part of more than three consecutive championship teams.

The trio posted a four-year record of 151-5, with four of the losses coming their freshman season. Every one of the 151 wins was by double digits. They went 24-0 in NCAA tournament games and won 75 consecutive games to end the four-peat.

This season, Tuck was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America First Team, Associated Press AllAmerica Second Team and, awarded the American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award and was named to the All-AAC First Team and to the Bridgeport Regional All-Tournament Team and Final Four All-Tournament Team.

“It’s just a matter of what the outside people, the outside world chooses to believe in and to vote on and give awards to, which is fine,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said about Tuck being named second team AP All-American while her senior counterparts were first teamers.

Minooka looking to make a deep playoff run this season

Heading into the conference matchup between two of the top teams in the Southwest Prairie Conference, both Minooka and Plainfield North had been on a roll to open the season.

The first game of the head to head meeting showed why both are eyeing an SPC title this year.

Plainfield North jumped out to an early lead in game one, but Minooka rallied for a 30-28 win in game one and used the momentum for a 2516 win in game two. It was the first loss of the season for the Tigers, who opened by winning both their own Plainfield North Invite and the Argo Invite.

Beating a team that opened with such a hot start, showed Minooka where it is early in the season.

The Indians also have only one loss on the season, that coming to Wheaton Warrenville South in the season opener.

“The guys came out wanting it and I was happy to hear them come out communicating very well on the court,” said Minooka coach Janelle Grzetich. “That is something that we have been working on since two years ago. They have been playing together for a while and it just hasn’t clicked yet and I am beginning to see it click now, which is great to see as a coach. The last two years were building years and they can do great things.

USF tennis earn wins behind local products Extending its season-high winning streak to four matches with an 8-1 victory over St. Ambrose University on Saturday at Challenge Fitness Tennis Courts, the University of St. Francis women’s tennis team remained unbeaten in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play (3-0), while also getting back to the .500 mark for the regular season at 8-8.

Auriemma said the senior trio complimented each other well during the historic four years.

“I think in life, you know, you end up in places where you’re surrounded by either people who do great things and you’re a part of it or you surround with people who bring you down,” he said. “Morgan’s been fortunate to be around Moriah and Stewy because they’ve raised her level. Maybe playing someplace without those two, she wouldn’t be as good a player as she is. And the reason she doesn’t get lost is the other two, Moriah and Stewy, know that without Morgan they wouldn’t be here. They would be home. And Stewy might not be the National Player of the Year if it wasn’t for Morgan Tuck.”

Tuck came on big for the Huskies the last two seasons after being hampered by injuries her freshman season and missing all but eight games during her sophomore campaign.

“It’s definitely hard with injuries,” Tuck said. “But my teammates did a great job of keeping me encouraged and always making me feel like I was part of the team. Even when I wasn’t able to be out there on the court, I still felt like I was there helping. And then to get four straight, that’s just our team.

With the twinbill split, USF remained at .500 overall (20-20) and moved to 5-10 in CCAC play.

Tuck totaled 1,298 for her career at UConn, scoring 17 points against Maryland on Dec. 28 to become the 41st Husky to join the 1,000-point club.

“Morgan Tuck, day in and day out, is probably our most consistent player, and she showed that (against Texas in the Elite Eight),” Auriemma said “When Morgan Tuck plays great and when Morgan Tuck plays the way she played in the Texas game, we are really, really, really hard to play against.”

Tuck was granted a medical redshirt following the injuries her sophomore season, so Tuck technically still has one year of eligibility remaining and could return to UConn to go after a fifth championship.

Tuck announced the day after the game she would not return, however, and declared for the WNBA draft.

According to mock drafts, Tuck and Jefferson could be reunited on the Connecticut Sun, who own the No. 3 and 4 picks in the upcoming draft, which is scheduled for Thursday, April 14 in Uncasville, CT. Stewart is expected to be the top overall selection and join Niles West’s Jewell Loyd in Seattle. The first round will be televised on ESPN 2 beginning at 7 p.m. The WNBA season opens May 14.

As the UConn trio head into the next chapters of their careers, they ended their college career together, being taken out of the championship game at the same time with 1 minute, 46 seconds left.

“This was the goal, not just for us three, but all of us; to come out to prove we are the best team in the country, and we were able to

do that.” Tuck said “(Walking off the floor together) It means a lot.

I don’t think anyone is going to

do it. Hopefully, they don’t break our record. For us to be able to do that, it speaks to our program. All

of the past players, the coaches, everything they did for us – they allowed for us to do that today.”

They play well together and they respect each other as teammates.

The communication is the big thing because it is something that was not there and now it is there. It can get better, but this is a good start.”

One of the leaders of the floor communication this season is Grant Ooms. “I think I play a big role on this team with communicating,” Ooms said. “I think talent wise, I may be a step down from some of these guys, but I feel like my role is to talk and help them out. I can help the guys in the front row and help serve receive and that is my role. We knew Plainfield North and Central would

I won’t go into story after story of what Morgan did to show her humility because that is just it – she just did her job. She didn’t make herself the story. And after every win and the occasional loss, she addressed the media in the same way – with a big smile, sharp sense of humor and a respect for all the players on the floor, teammates and opponents alike. She was always the first one to accept the blame for what went wrong and deflect the glory for what went well.

I have had the honor of watching Morgan Tuck grow as a player and person for the last eight years – the first four weekly at games and practices and the last on a TV screen – but I know when she raised the NCAA trophy over her head, I was proud that I was allowed to be along

“It helps knowing that we can play with any team in conference and now that we know that, we have to stay focused on conference, but we can start to look past just winning conference and want to win regionals, win sectionals and get to state.”

One of the things that will help the Indians get far this season is the chemistry they have.

“A lot of the kids on the team are my friends and I play a lot with them.

We all play at UNO, so I play year round with them and the chemistry and connection is there,” said Shane Chetney. “We are very confident in our skills and how hard we have been working. We really feel like we

can take this season somewhere worth showing.”

The skills will come from all players, as Grzetich said not one player can carry the Indians to where they want to get.

“All of them have such vital roles to play. In each rotation, I am telling different guys they have to do this and do that. In any team sport, it is not just one guy,” she said. “We have strengths – Brandon (Baranski) is a phenomenal hitter, Danny Beaudin is another phenomenal hitter, I think teams may forget about Luke Hermann on the right side and he has a very powerful swing as well. I have been working with Shane last year and his setting has made leaps and bounds. His confidence as a setter is great.”

I will continue to follow Morgan’s career as she heads to the WNBA to continue her next chapter and while I do that – it will be fun to watch her career intertwine with other local players having success in women’s professional basketball.

Already waiting in the league are Allie Quigley and Jewell Loyd.

Quigley, a Joliet Catholic Academy graduate, is a member of the Chicago Sky and the winner of the WNBA sixth woman of the year in 2014 and 2015.

Loyd, a Niles West alumnus, left the University of Notre Dame after her junior season to enter the WNBA draft and was last season’s No. 1 overall draft pick by the Seattle Storm.

This year, Loyd was named WNBA Rookie of the Year and is a finalist for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball team.

Think you don’t know who Loyd is – you are probably wrong.

Construction begins on IKEA’s Midwest distribution center in Joliet Center expected to open in 2018, create nearly 100 jobs Bugle Staff Furnishings retailer IKEA last week began construction of a future Midwest distribution center in Joliet.

The approximately 1.25 millionsquare-foot distribution center is being built on a 72-acre site at the Laraway Crossings Business Park.

When it becomes operational in spring 2018, the company said it will fulfill inventory needs of IKEA stores throughout the Midwest.

“We are pleased that construction has begun in Joliet for our Midwest distribution center, which will support our growing presence in that region of the country,” said Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president.

“We appreciate the support of Joliet city officials and staff for helping advance this project.”

The company said the project will create construction-related jobs and almost 100 positions at the distribution center, as well as generate property tax revenue for local governments and school districts.

“We welcome IKEA to Joliet and thank them for recognizing the value that our marketplace affords,” Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said in a city news release. “The skilled construction jobs and permanent IKEA positions will be a great employment opportunity for those here in Joliet.”

Gray Construction was selected to design and build the Joliet distribution center. The nationally ranked engineering, architecture and construction firm has designed and constructed more than 250 distribution facilities across the country, including other IKEA distribution centers.

“This project is the first big announcement for what is shaping up to be another great construction year in Joliet,” O’Dekirk added.

Women & osteoporosis Roughly 80 percent of the 10 million Americans with osteoporosis are women Osteoporosis is disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both and can affect both men and women. But while millions of men suffer from osteoporosis, the vast majority of people with this potentially painful condition are women.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, roughly 80 percent of the 10 million Americans with osteoporosis are women. Osteoporosis Canada, which notes that between 70 and 80 percent of osteoporotic fractures in Canada occur in women, reports that the loss of estrogen production during menopause production puts women at greater

risk for osteoporosis than men, as estrogen plays a vital role in female bone health.

But age is not the only factor that influences a woman’s risk for developing osteoporosis.

Caucasian women are most at risk for osteoporosis, and the NOF estimates that 20 percent of Caucasian women age 50 and older have the condition, and

more than half of Caucasian women age 50 and over have low bone mass. That means that the bones of more than 50 percent of Caucasian women over age 50 are weakening, potentially paving the way for osteoporosis in the future.

Asian American women are also at considerable risk of developing osteoporosis, which affects about the 20 percent of such women age

50 and older. Low bone density is a concern for Asian American women, more than half of whom have the condition.

The outlook for African American women is not as bleak, as just 5 percent of such women age 50 and older have osteoporosis.

And while 35 percent of African American women have low bone mass, recent research indicates that few African American women, even those who have risk factors for the disease, are screened for osteoporosis. Insisting on osteoporosis screening can help African American women determine their true risk for the disease.

While gender and aging are beyond women’s control, these are not the only risk factors that increase the chances women may develop low bone density or experience fractures and falls down the road.

Osteoporosis Canada notes additional risk factors include: • If either parent has had a hip fracture • Having had a prior fracture with minimal trauma • Long-term (more than three months) use of

glucocorticoid therapy, such as prednisone Rheumatoid arthritis Current smoker History of falls in the previous 12 months Vertebral fracture apparent on x-ray High alcohol intake (three or more drinks per day) Weight loss greater than 10 percent since age 25

Despite the abundance of risk factors, the two most prominent of which are beyond women’s control, women are not helpless against osteoporosis.

Among the many things women can do to protect their bones is exercise regularly and eat a well-balanced diet that includes enough calcium and vitamin D as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables.

In addition, avoiding or quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption to no more than two to three drinks per day can protect bones and make them less vulnerable to breaks and the onset of osteoporosis.
