Joliet Central High School’s Brother-to-Brother Club and Joliet West’s Multicultural Club teamed up recently to host the first minority enrichment luncheon in the Joliet West cafeteria.

“The luncheon exposed minority students to professionals in successful careers that are not typically promoted,” Brotherto-Brother sponsor Ernest Crim said. “The event took the focus off entertainment and athletics and directed it towards fields such as education, health, business, politics, law enforcement and religion.”

A variety of minority speakers provided students with firsthand examples of success and achievement, while mentors shared their stories and connected with the students.

Speakers at the luncheon included Brittany Ramsey, a personal trainer and fitness model based out of Bolingbrook; Rev. Melody Seaton, principal of Jesse Owens Academy in Chicago and

Pastor of Grace United Church of Christ in Sauk Village; Alberto Filipponi, curriculum director at Joliet Township High School in Joliet; Oscar Cuevas, a political activist and Joliet Central graduate who founded Learners for Justice; and David Jackson, detective with the Joliet Police Department.

During the event, Crim said that a myriad of historical circumstances have caused many minority communities across the country to suffer in various aspects of life.

“Part of the problem is that the younger generation is not exposed to positive role models outside of the fields of sports and entertainment,” he added. “Hopefully with this minority enrichment luncheon, we will help improve those conditions as we show these very capable students examples, not of what has been, but of what they can become.”

The luncheon was organized by Cassie Crim, Ernest Crim and Pablo Marquez.

Legislators discuss state of the state at chamber event Chamber invited area lawmakers to speak at its March 21 luncheon

After eight months without a state budget, local elected officials updated the Joliet business community on a gridlock that has shaken up downstate politics.

The Joliet Chamber of Commerce invited a handful of state legislators to speak at its March 21 luncheon, where everything from the state budget to criminal justice reform and taxes were on the agenda.

Among those who spoke at the event were state sens. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, and state reps. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Joliet, and Natalie Manley, D-Joliet.

In conversations with area officials, McGuire notes that he’s heard people say legislators must work toward an agreement regarding the state budget because it cannot go on much longer. While there’s no word on whether the impasse is coming to an end, he added that it’s unfortunate to have not passed legislation to fund the remaining 10 percent of Illinois government not covered by various legislative, judicial and executive actions.

That 10 percent includes funding for higher education and social services, which McGuire said critically important to some of the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

“We’ve seen the effects here on Cornerstone Services, we see the effects on Catholics Charities, we’ve seen the effect on Stepping Stones, and other human services providers,” he said. “Ninety percent of the budget is moving out because the governor signed the K-12 bill, because of the consent decrees and court orders.

However, McGuire said it is extremely unfortunate that the 10 percent in limbo is for human services and higher education. As chairman of the higher education committee,heknowshowimportant the MAP grant is for Illinois students and public universities.

Individuals who come from lowincome backgrounds sometimes have to work with financial aid packages that include several different sources to fund their education. Because of the state budget impasse, these students

are faced with a great deal of uncertainty.

“We’re looking at two of the sources not being existent for another year and the other perhaps being reduced,” McGuire said.

A criminal system While the budget standoff appears to have no end in sight, McGuire said criminal justice reform is one important issue seeing movement in Springfield. In order to reform that system, the state is placing a new focus on offenders diagnosed with severe mental illness.

In February, officials prepared a proposal allotting $38 million to staff a new mental health treatment facility at the former location of the Illinois Youth Center. That bill could be passed as early as July, according to McGuire.

The Rauner administration began acting on the agenda item set in motion by former Gov. Pat Quinn, spending about $15 million last summer for the renovations of the Illinois Youth Center in Joliet.

“Regarding the Illinois Youth Center in Joliet, my pal and fellow Democrat Pat Quinn of course closed that facility a couple years ago,” McGuire said. “In retrospect, I respect his justification. There was excess capacity in Illinois’ juvenile justice system. There were more beds than were needed, which is good news because there are fewer teenage boys in our juvenile prisons.

But we don’t want that facility to sit, either.”

In 2007, a federal court case involving Ashoor Rasho, an inmate at Pontiac Correctional Center, was filed against the Illinois Department of Corrections, alleging that the state did not provide adequate support to offenders with severe mental illness.

McGuire said the new treatment facility in Joliet could serve as a possible remedy for the court case.

The hope, according to the senator, is that offenders will be able to return to the general population after receiving the necessary treatment at a newly renovated Joliet facility.

Finding funds for local government During the event, Bertino-Tarrant shared an update on municipal

funding, as it pertains to the state’s budget process. She said she didn’t approve of how funding was held up last year, and is continuing to hold the same concern for the appropriation of funds to municipalities in the upcoming year.

“What this translates to us is that what we witnessed this past year may be a little bit of the same moving forward,” she said. “We know we get into a separate appropriation bill for our local municipalities to get the money that they deserve. It was held up as a result in dollars from IDOT over $582 million for local government share of the motor fuel tax.”

During last year’s budget talks, a number of other appropriations were also on hold, including monies valued at $77 million for 911 related costs and $45 million for video gaming proceeds.

“Needless to say, while we were able to pass appropriation bills this current year,” she said. “We’re going to be facing the same crisis again.

If you add those dollars up there, that’s a critical amount of money to our local government.”

In response to this year’s budget

talks, Bertino-Tarrant said she continues to support distributing state funds that are owed to local municipalities.

Transportation Walsh spoke about new developments in funding upgrades to Will County’s transportation system. He said change will not happen overnight, but officials have been working to improve some of the traffic-related issues occurring in the area.

Will County has seen a lot of growth because of area intermodal facilities and all the associated industries. Walsh said that type of growth has increased truck traffic.

“We’ve been sitting diligently trying to come up with ways on how to fund infrastructure,” he said.

“One of the things you might have heard of is an increase in the gas tax.

Right now, Illinois pays 19 cents per gallon—no matter if that is $4 or if that gallon is $1.99, it’s 19 cents— that’s what goes into the motor fuel fund.”

In previous general assemblies, Walsh said the 5.25 percent sales tax that municipalities generated would go toward the motor fuel fund. In recent years, however, these funds are being allotted toward the state’s general fund. Walsh said he is working to see sales tax revenue

moved back into the motor fuel fund.

Over the past several years, he said officials have been using capital dollars for roadway improvements and that’s part of the problem.

In response to appropriations of capital funding, Walsh added that these monies would be better spent on building new infrastructure, bridges and schools, among other items.

Dollars and cents Manley talked about taxes and how the state can use them to increase revenue. She sees an issue that is prevalent among those of retirement age in her district concerning any potential action taken to tax their income or raise property taxes.

“People on fixed incomes are very nervous about how we are going to fix the budget hold,” she said. “My job is to represent their interests.

Taxing retirement income is not the first place I ever want to go. I voted for freezing property taxes in great part to support the governor and to be willing to compromise – 16 times the last time I counted, never seems to pass through the legislature.”

She said the taxing of services is another area of concern among legislators.

“My opinion of that is that it’s a regressive tax,” she said. “People that can least afford it are going to feel the effects of that and I don’t that’s the way we need to do it. I really think that when we talk about revenue and how we’re going to plug the hole that we have, it’s going to take more than one thing.”

Manley said she hopes that several different elements will be utilized to make the state’s effort to balance the budget work and to convey a sense of fairness to everyone.

Chapman delivers 15th state of the village Mayor highlights residential, commercial development during March 22 address

Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman gave his 15th annual state of the village address last week, and the longtimemayorspokeoptimistically about the village’s future in terms of both its finances and housing market.

During the address, Chapman spoke about the process of bringing Lake Michigan water to Shorewood.

He said there were some question

marks about the proposal, with one option to connect the existing pipeline in Bolingbrook to Shorewood.

“It’s a major issue,” he added.

“That right there is probably more money than the village has spent in its lifetime.”

Chapman said direct and sales taxes make up the largest revenue streams in Shorewood’s general fund.

“It is supported almost 50 percent by sales tax,” Chapman said.

The mayor also noted the village’s AA+ bond rating from Standard and Poors, which he said is an indicator of Shorewood’s sound financial footing.

“If you put that up against most other municipalities in the state of Illinois, we’re going to be in the lead,” he said.

Chapman added that he was told the state’s finances are the only thing preventing Shorewood from earning S&P’s AAA rating, which is the highest rating issued by the financial services company..

“Financially, we’re in great shape,” he said.

Another area of growth highlighted by Chapman was Shorewood’s housing market. He said the village is in a good place, with two more developers set to build homes in 2016.

“I would like to see 100 homes built annually,” he said. “That would be the number that we can really support in a responsible manner.”

Business has also been booming in Shorewood, according to the mayor, with 33 new businesses coming to the village in 2015.

One of those businesses, Lenny’s Gas N’ Wash, caused a great deal of controversy in Shorewood. Many residents spoke out against the business, saying that it was too close to residential properties and would cause additional traffic and safety issues at the already busy intersection of River Road and Route 52.

Chapman took the opportunity during his state of the village to again praise the recently opened development, which also included an attached Dunkin’ Donuts.

“That corner was zoned for this type of business for over 26 years,” Chapman said, adding that he didn’t blame anyone for the uproar that came over the business. “People are going to understand that it’s not the nightmare that they thought it would be.”

Native American cultural center opens Saturday Sampling of Native American culture activities will take place April 2 until 5 p.m.

The Midwest Soarring Foundation has planned a day of celebration for the April 2 opening of its new Native American Cultural Center in Lockport.

The new location, 133 W. 13th St, is housed in the historic 1863 Train Station in downtown Lockport and located on the I & M Canal State

Trail. The celebration will start with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., provided by the Lockport Chamber of Commerce.

What would make your medicines cheaper?

That’s a question Americans are asking every time they go to the pharmacy and find the price of a maintenance drug they’ve been taking has doubled or tripled, or that a new medicine, like one of the new diabetes drugs, their doctors have prescribed is beyond their means.

Increasingly the answer from the drug industry, which pretty much can charge whatever it wishes, is more patient assistance programs that come in the form of coupons, co-pay cards, or vouchers to help people buy their drugs.

People needing help can also apply directly to a pharmaceutical company, and if their income is low enough, the company simply sends a supply of medicine to their home or doctor’s office. How many times have you heard on TV that AstraZeneca can help?

The coupon, co-pay route to helping patients is easiest to understand. The industry calls the coupons “pay-nomore “ cards telling patients they will pay no more than $50 or $100 for a prescription. Discounts vary by the type of drug.

Some work like airline loyalty programs: Buy so many drugs and get the next one free.

E-vouchers are more complicated and hardly transparent. A pharmacy sends a prescription to a middleman vendor. The vendor works with the drug company to figure out how much of the patient’s cost sharing that’s required by the insurer it will pay on the patient’s behalf. Rules and amounts patients receive vary depending on the kind of drug.

Andrew Pollpeter, a senior principal with the Amundsen Group, an IMS Health Company, told me the company sets the amount of the voucher, and the patient doesn’t know much about

it. But, he said, “they are happier when they see a lower copay.”

All this sounds great for patients, right? It may not be in the long-run.

Recently the Oversight Committee of the House of Representatives held hearings on the high price of pharmaceuticals. It found that one company tried to divert attention from the high price of its drugs by publicizing its patient assistance programs.

Committee member Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) was blunt when she questioned one company executive who was testifying. “In other words, instead of keeping the price so it could be purchased by patients and hospitals, you went to patient assistance programs to try to obscure the price.” Holmes Norton got the point: No matter the kind of assistance program, the underlying price of the drug remains high.

Patient assistance programs are nothing new. Several years ago I sat next to a drug company executive at a dinner and asked him why his company made it so hard for poor people to qualify for assistance. (The requirements can be difficult to meet.) He replied that if the company were more generous, it would hurt the bottom line.

The bottom line is still all-important, but today drug makers have a PR problem. They need to appear more benevolent. There’s genuine public backlash against their companies’ pricing strategies, and Congress is asking questions. By becoming more

“patient centric,” a word they use to describe their marketing path, they look like good guys while keeping prices high and profits up.

Drug companies have another problem patient assistance programs aim to solve. Large numbers of patients are not taking their medicines as their doctors ordered, either because they can’t afford them or because the medicines make them sick. No matter the reason, it translates into lost sales.

Stats from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics show that only 25 percent of patients with drug deductibles will most likely still be taking their brand name drugs after six months compared with 40 percent in plans without such deductibles.

The rate at which patients don’t pick up with meds at the pharmacy is 60 percent higher for new patients with brand drug prescriptions and drug deductibles than those who don’t have drug deductibles.

“If patients walk away, they frequently don’t come back with an alternative prescription,” says Pollpeter.

According to Matt Lamkin, an assistant professor at the University of Tulsa College of Law who studies this issue, drug companies believe “they are leaving billions on the table” when patients don’t take their pills. Trying to help more people stay on their meds “reframes the goal of boosting sales as a goal of public service,” he told the health news site STAT. Transforming drug companies from bad guys to good guys with the magic of PR will help some patients get cheaper medicines and no doubt boost sales.

It will do little to get us out of the bigpicture jam. Drug prices are still too high and out of reach for too many Americans.

winner Benet’s Doyle wins Player of Year honors for 2nd time

After winning the state championship last year, Benet was mostly an afterthought this year, despite returning the 2015 Voyager Media Player of the Year, Kathleen Doyle.

However, thanks in large part to the Nebraska recruit, the Redwings stormed through the regular season en route to a No. 1 sectional seed.

Then in the playoffs, Doyle took her game and her team to an allnew level, leading Benet back to state after a game-winning basket in the final seconds of the supersectional against Edwardsville.

Doyle was up to her old tricks again at state, matching a career high with 31 points in the semifinal and then breaking 20 points in the championship, leading her team to a repeat.

For all of her accomplishments this season, Doyle is also the repeat Voyager Media Player of the Year.

“I think my team just looked to me more this year,” Doyle said. “We lost our two big scorers from last year. We all had to fill in scoring and I think that was the biggest difference.”

“Virtually every game we play, she is the best player in the gym,” Benet coach Joe Kilbride said.

“Even when she has a bad game, she is the best player in the gym.

She is special.”

On top of being one of the top defenders in the state, Doyle led the Redwings in scoring, assists and steals, and was second in blocks and rebounds.

She finished her career with more than 1,500 career points. As a senior she averaged 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals per game.

Jaida Green Green, a Penn State recruit, capped her career with Downers Grove North averaging 17.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game with 54 steals and 63 blocks.

Hennessey Handy Plainfield Central senior averaged 18.1 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, two assists and 2.2 steals.

“Hennessey was the focal point of our opponent’s defensive game plan on a nightly basis this past season,” Central coach Gregg Bayer said. “Our team relied on her to do many things for us this season (be a scoring threat, primary ball handler at times, and defend one of the other teams’ best players each night). As you can see with her stat line, she is a well-rounded player who can contribute to a team in a multitude of ways. Her greatest strength is attacking the basket where she has the rare ability to draw multiple defenders and make the correct

basketball play.”

Second team Brooklyn Bachmann Minooka junior was the floor leader of the team from the point guard position and led the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game.

She also shot 73 percent from the foul like and had 83 assists.

“Brooklyn’s ability to score in so many ways makes her such a dangerous offensive weapon,” Liberatore said. “We have won 60 games the past three seasons with Brooklyn as our starting point guard and her quickness makes her attractive to college basketball coaches.”

Monica Barefield A senior from Joliet Central, Barefield tallied 19.3 points per game, 62 assists, 65 3s and 54 steals.

“Monica earned a spot on Romeoville’s and Oswego East holiday tournaments,” Joliet Central coach Brian Reed said.

“She was SWSC all-conference pick and co-mvp this season.

Monica plans on attending Alcorn State next year. Monica was one of the best guards in the SWSC, which

is one of the toughest conference in the state. The bigger the game the better Monica played, she was a pleasure to coach the last two seasons, and may her success continue at the next level.”

Jordan Heberg The McKendree University recruit averaged 16 points for Plainfield North, while breaking the all-time scoring record in the program, finishing with 1,388 points.

“Jordan Heberg was our leading scorer and team leader, she was the one opponents had to focus on and she still got the job done whether it was an assist, rebound or scoring,” North coach Reggie Lemon said. “She was a four-year varsity player and all-time leading scorer in PNHS girls basketball history.”

Gabby Smith A guard from Bolingbrook, Smith tallied 13.2 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 45 assists, 33 steals and made 51 three-pointers.

Jahari Smith The sophomore from Romeoville finished the season averaging 14.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for the Spartans.

“Jahari is a tremendous player with a great attitude,” Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. “She wants to succeed as a player but more importantly wants the team to succeed. As a sophomore she was team captain. She is one of the only players in my coaching career that watches as much film as coaches. The scary thing is she is still developing. The future is very bright for her.”

Third team Sydney Arlis The senior from Minooka capped her career averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while making 30 three-pointers.

“Sydney is the most complete player I’ve coached at MCHS,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “Whatever our team needed her to do to help us win (scoreassist-rebound-defend) she would do. She is a great leader who was just relentless every time she stepped on the basketball court.”

Jaianna Brooks Plainfield South junior point guard averaged a team-best 14.7 points per game for the Cougars, while adding four rebounds, four assists and three steals per game.

“I feel that Jaianna is one of the best point guards in the area,” South coach Leah Carter said.

“She has a great pull-up jumper off of the dribble, and she is able to create her own shots. Jaianna also has very strong ball-handling skills that helps our team in the back court against presses.”

Amaya Johns The sophomore averaged 15.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and three assists per game, for Plainfield North.

“Amaya Johns was our second leading scorer on the team,” Lemon said. “Amaya is only a sophomore and she played like a true varsity player. She is very versatile – can shoot, rebound and go to the basket with and against the best. Amaya is very fast and strong for her size and she always cause match-up problems. Amaya will be an All-American if she

continues to get better. She will continue to get better every year.”

Lota Onua Onua, a junior from Plainfield East, totaled 11.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 84 steals.

“I could count on her every game to give maximum effort and score in double digits and get close to double digit rebounds, despite teams keying on her,” East coach Anthony Wazonis said. “Not only did she lead the team in scoring and rebounding, but also had our most steals (by 22). Helped lead a turnaround from a 10-win season to an 18-win season and making a regional final. In games where teams keyed on her as well she would be the first to share the ball and often have five assists in those games.”

Elise Stout A two-time state champion from Benet, Stout, a senior, averaged 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals per game.

She shot 53 percent from two, 40 percent from three and 80 percent from the foul line.

“The senior co-captain never stops running and is one of the keys to Benet’s vaunted fast break and full court press,” Kilbride said. “She has been the most efficient offensive player for the Redwings for the past two years with an exceptional 134 percent efficiency rating (points per field goal attempt). She comes up big when it matters most, posting a career high 32 points in regional championship as senior.”

Fourth team Annie Carlson The do-it-all senior from Westmont played all positions for the Sentinels, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds per game.

“Annie was our guard, forward and center,” Westmont coach Matt McCord said. “She led us in assists. In our sectional victory over Beecher, she scored her 1,000 career point. Annie had the ability to rebound a shot and the speed to score at the other end on a break. In the majority of our losses, Annie was either hurt, fouled out, or double teamed by opponents. In all my years of coaching, I have never had one player who was most influential to a team’s success.”

Riley Eckhart Maine South senior totaled 9.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 steals for the Hawks.

“Throughout her four years

in our program, no one worked harder on her game than Riley Eckhart,” Maine South coach Mark Smith said. “Her tireless efforts helped her become one of the premier shooters in the area and certainly the best threepoint shooter in our program.

Her consistent performances meant a great deal to our team as everyone knew exactly what they were going to get from Riley on a daily basis.”

Mia Farrell Farrell overcame injury to average 13.8 points, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting 77 percent from the free throw line. She is a University of Chicago commit.

“Mia is one of the most competitive players I have had the pleasure to coach,” Leonard said.

“Her toughness was infectious and she pushed our team through tough times. A perfect example came in the Morgan Park game.

She aggravated a shoulder injury that saw her miss three weeks, but never once asked to come out of the game. She made big plays while holding down one of the most prolific scores in the state under her average. Her toughness can be equaled by her skill. She plays with such poise and confidence, I felt comfortable every time she had the ball. She would do anything to help the team win: Make a big shot, make the right pass, shut down an opponent on defense. She was our emotional leader and her work ethic influenced our team to play harder, especially when she was injured.”

Katie Jaseckas Junior from Benet played a key role on the Redwings’ past two state championship teams.

This season, she finished the season averaging 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks per game.

She shot 51 percent from twopoint range and 46 percent from three.

Jnaya Walker A transfer from Joliet Catholic Academy, the Bolingbrook junior finished the season with 10.5 points per game, four rebounds per game, 53 assists and 56 steals.

“Jnaya Walker re-established herself as a player who can do many things on the court from scoring to rebounding, dishing out assists and playing defense,” Smith said. “I look for her senior season to be great.”

Planning for college with ESAs and 529s Dear Dave, We have two daughters, and we’ve started thinking about financial planning for college. What are the differences between an Education Savings Account and a 529 plan?

John Dear John, I’m glad you’re thinking ahead and planning for the future. Here’s a quick overview of the two.

The Education Savings Account is limited to $2,000 per year, per child.

It has complete flexibility, meaning you can invest it in whatever you like and you can move it—roll it over— to another one if you don’t like that mutual fund, as an example. I use that example because I recommend using good growth stock mutual funds and that you do this for the first $2,000 invested per year.

There are several types of 529 plans, and there’s only one that I would recommend. It’s the kind that has complete flexibility, where you control the investments.

Some states have 529 plans that are prepaid tuition, and I never recommend those. You don’t want the state managing anything for you, because you won’t get anywhere near the returns you’d get

if you managed it yourself. Other types of 529s lock you into a certain kind of investment the whole time, or they move the investment based on the age of your kid. I don’t want anybody doing that crap. I want you controlling your money.

Most of the 529s vary somewhat from state to state, but the majority have flexibility that allows you to control the investment while contributing up to $10,000 a year. Both those and the ESAs grow completely tax-free on the growth as long as they’re used for higher education. They can also be transferred to a sibling if the kid doesn’t go to school, so a little brother or sister can use the money.

If they get scholarships, make sure you keep up with the value of these.

You’ll be allowed to withdraw that amount and refund yourself for the scholarship amount without penalty or taxes on the amount withdrawn.

In short, both the ESA and 529 are fine ways to save for college. Just make sure if you’re doing a 529 that you choose the kind you control from top to bottom!

Kristin Dear Kristin, Overspending is, 100 percent of the time, a choice. It’s a decision.

Most of the time it’s linked to immaturity, although there can be other issues at play.

People who habitually overspend are saying that they’re unwilling to act like a mature adult, and delay pleasure in order to win with money.

This kind of thing is made even worse because we live in a culture fueled by extreme debt marketing.

And when things like credit card offers are constantly in the face of immature people, those two things can combine to make a real mess.

Joliet West dress sale raises $500 for local charity The Joliet West junior class committee recently raised $500 that will be donated to Shorewood HUGS. “We already have a family in mind that we want to help,” said Kristen Koppers, teacher and junior class sponsor.

Along with six committee members, students and two parents volunteered to help with a dress sale event designed to help girls find dresses for prom, as well as other

occasions.

“The event was truly a wonderful experience for a great cause,” said Esmeralda Hernandez, a parent who traveled from Indiana the dress sale. “The volunteers there were just as great as going into an expensive retail store.”

Her daughter found three dresses at the event, including one for her own prom.

Madi Dobbs, who is president of the junior class, said her favorite

part of the dress sale was to see the girls trying on their dresses.

“I can see the confidence on their faces,” Dobbs said.

The dresses that were unsold were separated to be resold at another time, and the ones that could not be held over were donated to the Joliet West drama department to use.

“Within the first hour, we sold 12 dresses,” Koppers said. “It was amazing to see how beautiful the girls looked.”

JTHS earns financial reporting award The Association of School Business Officials International awarded Joliet Township High School the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for having met or exceeded the program’s standards for financial reporting and accountability.

The district was recognized for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending 2015.

“JTHS has participated in this program for 30 years, which demonstrates the district’s transparent record keeping and

sound financial planning,” said Ilandus Hampton, assistant superintendent of business services.

“The award is a true reflection of the district’s commitment to fiscal integrity.”

LTHS students earn honors at German High School Day 2016 Fifteen Lockport Township High School students participated in the 2016 UIC Department of Germanic Studies German High School Day, where more than 400 high school students from 19 area high schools competed in a variety of expertise areas.
