Two and a half months into his tenure, new Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones and staff have compiled a list of potential development initiatives to undertake in the coming years.

At the Joliet City Council’s March 16 meeting, Jones gave a presentation outlining a number of recommendations that officials would like to see put into action.

Among them are increasing efforts to engage in organizational analysis, narrowing the focus on the downtown plan by strengthening the city’s image as a “mecca for young adults” and launching an economic

In exploring areas of focus, the city’s first-ever economic development director said many of the ideas were generated through his own observations, while others were based on discussions within the business community and input from city staff.

Jones added that one of the most notable economic development goals pertains to organizational analysis.

“I think we need to know what can really take Joliet economic

development to the next level,” said Jones. “What can we learn from some of the towns that are pretty comparable to us, who have gone through that cycle of changing demographics and changing business approaches.”

Within the next year, Jones said he would like to have a report that compiles what works, what doesn’t work and some of the best practices have been for comparable towns such as Aurora and Elgin.

Ultimately, he would like to see Joliet enter 2017 with a list of items the city council can consider.

Over the next five to 10 years, Joliet also plans to focus its attention on downtown development.

And while the city has a number of additional objectives, Jones said there is one particular aspect of his development plan that may be hidden among the various priorities.

“As you recall, we have a goal in our downtown development that references creating a ‘mecca for young adults,’” he said. “That’s something that has to happen with additional housing stock.” The economic development director said the city has a number of buildings that are underutilized.

With the right developer, Jones feels the city could encourage the types of projects that would use those spaces to create new housing.

Additionally, Jones would like to see the city expand its online presence with respect to economic development.

“There’s not a lot that I would call a resource within our own website,” he said. “We need to bring our standard up to 2016. We need to be a real resource, not just a list of permits and requirements and contact people.”

Jones said that online resource should focus on what developers are looking for, whether it’s retail or industrial manufacturing.

He suggested introducing items such as building site data that will help users decide if Joliet is a good match for them.

“We’re starting a little bit of discussion with regard to the design of that site, but it’s going to be a lot of work,” he said. “And of course with a website, it’s never completed… You need to make sure that you’re on par with other communities and find things that really will show Joliet in images.”

Jones added that a website is the “front porch for the city,” giving those who travel in and around the area a glimpse of what it’s like to live and do business in Joliet.

Following the presentation, Jones told the Bugle that he expects the city to launch the online economic development site within the next six months.

He added that other recommendations would be made toward the end of the year, coinciding with the city’s yearly budget process.

Joliet Blight Reduction Program 2 approved

Joliet’s effort to address issues related to blighted properties moved forward March 15, with city officials unanimously agreeing to partner with the Illinois Housing Development Authority on its Blight Reduction Program 2.

The vote comes after officials learned that Joliet would receive a $980,000 grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

Funds will be used to purchase and demolish blighted properties in neighborhoods north of Interstate 80 along the Des Plaines River, according to the agreement.

Once demolished, the properties would be tendered over to adjacent property owners or become available for other redevelopment opportunities.

In June 2014, Joliet formed a partnership with the South Suburban Land Bank and Development Authority that officials say directly helped the city obtain the monetary grant assistance and has so far resulted in $1.26 million in funding.

City awards contract for water meter reading devices Also at that meeting, the city council approved a $119,655 public utilities department contract for the purchase of water meters and SmartPoint radios.

Automatic meter reading system allows city staff to read and monitor data from about 46,000 meters on a monthly basis. The system uses three main components, including water meters, SmartPoint radios and the radio-read-tower infrastructure.

In 1987, Joliet first started using sensus meters, and officials now say these mechanisms need restocking. The funding to reshelve the devices will be charged to the water and sewer improvement fund.

Well 15D rehab The city council also voted to authorize a bid contract for rehabilitation of Well 15D, which is located at 1900 Drauden Road in Joliet.

Although three bids were received, Water Well Solutions failed to renew prequalification with the city of Joliet prior to the March 1 bid opening, removing it from consideration.

On March 15, the contract was awarded to Great Lakes Water Resources Group in Joliet, given that funds are charged to the 2016 water and sewer improvement fund.

City report suggests improper billing in costly Evergreen Terrace lawsuit Mayor says report indicates city of Joliet may have been considerably overbilled

A decade of decisions places Joliet in its current position; sifting through the litigation process to secure the purchase of Evergreen Terrace, a 356-unit housing development near downtown Joliet once deemed a “cancer on the civic body of Joliet.”

A lot can happen in 10 years and officials revealed during a March 17 press conference, that costly hang-ups were discovered recently in the city’s accounting books.

Chris Regis, the city’s newly appointed inspector general, was accompanied by Mayor Bob O’DeKirk when he spoke on behalf of the city and referenced a 25-page report he prepared on the Evergreen Terrace case, explaining what he thinks is most notable about their findings.

“The law firm [Figliulo & Silverman] increased their rates,” he said. “Now, in a 10-year litigation that’s not altogether shocking that sometime the prices would go up. But in some instances, the increases were quite significant.”

Since engaging in the legal fiasco involving the purchase of

Evergreen Terrace in 2005, the city has racked up and paid a number of legal fees.

To date, the city has undertaken a total of $21 million including legal fees to the firm in question and the acquisition of the apartment building.

Over the years, the city government has seen a number of changes in leadership, including the positions of city manager, corporation counsel and mayor, among others.

Joliet’s first inspector general pointed out how city ordinances denote that any cost over $20,000 needs to be submitted to the city council for approval. That has not always been the case, however.

For about the first year, when the court proceedings began and the costs started to roll in, no forms were submitted to the council for the approval of legal fees, Regis said. The costs were relatively low and wouldn’t require city council approval.

Another year’s worth of records show fees being submitted to officials but never received a vote.

Other forms were marked in an effort to request the treasurer’s disbursement, revealing a rise in costs and yet, these documents never came before the city council, Regis added.

After years of mismanagement of the case, O’DeKirk said seeing Joliet improperly billed was a concern that sparked their attention.

“Back in the fall when it first came to my attention that there was a problem with the billing, we did contact a local law firm who was looking into the billing,” he said. “This was around the time that we discovered the billing was being done at the wrong rate.

There’s also some indication that the bills that were submitted were considerably overbilling the city of Joliet.”

O’DeKirk said having a $5 million condemnation lawsuit, which could continue to rise in value should the litigation process continue, was a red flag for officials. Through subsequent information, the city uncovered that billing was being done at rate that had never been contracted.

Cooking for a Cause raises almost $6,000 for charity Joliet Township High School and Chicagoland Speedway have concluded a seven-month culinary arts project that raised $5,762 for charity and added two new kids’ meals to the 2016 Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway menu.

“The seven months of hard work paid off for all of the students involved as they were able to

showcase not only their culinary skills, but also develop project based business skills that will prove highly relevant in their future career aspirations,” said Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway.

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said the district is proud of students’ work and dedication to the project.

“Our students proved themselves to be creative in their kids’ meal innovations and their artistry in the boxes they prepared for serving their meals,” she said.

The Cooking For A Cause fundraiser took place last week at Joliet Central High School’s new Student Center. Joliet organizations Vilaseca Josephine Center and Morningstar Mission were selected by the students to share the $5,762.

Beyond ticket sales from the event, the donations were made possible by event sponsors ExxonMobil, Martin Whalen Office Solutions, Abri Credit Union, Presence St. Joseph Medical Center,

Because provisional and mail-in ballots still have to be tabulated, combined with the narrow margin separating Khouri and Stella, both candidates are waiting for the results to be finalized later this month.

As of March 19, each of the counties was reporting the following number of ballots still left to be counted: city of Aurora, 772; DuPage, 3,182; Will, 3,643; Kane, 470; and Kendall, 96.

Cook County had not submitted any data to the Illinois Election Commission regarding uncounted ballots, though only four of the county’s precincts are included in the 11th District.

According to Linda Fechner, of the Aurora Election Commission, those votes are not totaled and cast until March 29. Once that is done, election results will be considered official.

Despite the unofficial results, Khouri released a statement March 16 claiming victory in the primary and thanking her supporters.

However, Stella’s campaign is not ready to concede. A message posted on the “Stella for Congress” Facebook page points out that the provisional ballots still needed to be tabulated.

“By no means is this race over,” the post stated. “We still have the provisional ballots to be counted in all five counties and that would include absentee and early votes. So keep us in your prayers, keep your fingers crossed and keep a good word in your hearts until everyone’s voice has been counted.”

Babette Holder, communications director for the Stella campaign, said Stella would not concede until all the ballots are counted.

“A lot of folks did do early voting this year; there’s also folks who mailed in votes, so it’s really hard to say [who won],” Holder said.

“It’s so close that [Stella] feels it’s worth the wait to have a final tally that counts.”

Joliet West High School Director of Vocal Music Tim DeBoer was recently selected as one of 30 finalists for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. The finalists, selected from a pool of more than 400 nominations, represent high school teachers throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

“I am humbled and excited to have been chosen as a Golden Apple finalist,” DeBoer said. “I am grateful for the tremendously talented students in the choral program at Joliet West, who make coming to work and making music a rewarding experience each and every day.”

Study finds Will County 14th healthiest in state Strengths include length of life, help for the uninsured A grant-funded study released March 16 ranks Will County among the healthiest counties in Illinois.

The Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health study uses data sets collected from numerous sources to objectively rank the health of all 102 state counties.

For the seventh consecutive year, MATCH ranked Will County as one of the state’s healthiest counties.

The MATCH project is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The study ranksWill County as the 14th healthiest county in Illinois, which is a seven spot improvement over its 2015 ranking.

According to MATCH, the county ranks 14th best in terms of health outcomes and 18th in health factors – an improvement of one spot over 2015. Health outcomes are a measure of current community health, and are based on an equal weighting of morbidity and mortality measures that influence the length and quality of life.

The health factors ranking is derived from an examination of numerous health behaviors, such as access to clinical care, quality of clinical care and physical environment. Social and economic factors are also considered.

Will County has improved its

overall health ranking by 11 spots since 2014. The county’s overall ranking has never been poorer than 25th.

According to the study, Will County strengths include length of life, high school graduation rates, low teen birth rates, help for the uninsured, low accidental fatality rate, access to clean drinking water and a comparatively low number of children living below the poverty line. Areas that could be targeted for improvement include adult smoking rates, adult obesity, unemployment, housing problems and preventable hospital stays.

Will County’s Mobilizing Action Through Planning and Partnerships provides a framework to help the community assess and address critical area health concerns. The collaboration brings together dozens of community partners who are willing to invest their time and talents to insure that Will County remains one of the state’s healthiest jurisdictions.

There will be a free Mobilizing Action training for current and prospective members April 4, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Current Mobilizing Action initiatives include adult obesity and reducing the incidence of preventable hospital stays in Will County.

Another avalanche of statements from Illinois legislators and Gov. Rauner were sent out last week – each assigning blame for the state budget standoff to the other side and ridding themselves of responsibility for a financial fiasco that’s receiving national ridicule.

The issue prompting this wave of rhetoric was the passage of Senate Bill 2059 – an appropriations bill that would authorize payments for mental health and social services, as well as higher education, during the ongoing budget B.S. Senate Democrats say the bill, which appropriates up to $3.9 billion for social services and higher education spending, was inspired by recent testimony from Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger during a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Prior to this, the Republican governor and Democratic legislators waged a similar war of words over a failed attempt earlier this month to override Rauner’s veto of SB 2043, which would fund MAP grants for the 2015-16 academic year and include money for community colleges and career-technical and adult education.

“We applaud House Republicans and Representative Drury for standing up for taxpayers today,” Rauner’s press secretary, Catherine Kelly, said in a statement following the failed override attempt. “Despite the governor’s request that the General Assembly not waste time with a political vote that was never going to pass, the legislature is poised to leave students, universities and community colleges in the lurch for at least a month.”

Fast forward a couple weeks, and State Sen. Pat McGuire was one member of the general assembly who kicked off the next round of political press releases, after the Senate approved SB 2059.

The Will County Democrat said the bill allows Rauner to fund programs and services not covered by the court orders and consent decrees that are propelling 90 percent of state spending.

“It supports the drug, mental health and veterans courts, which are more effective than imprisonment,” McGuire said. “And it signals to students awaiting MAP grants that the state plans to honor its obligation to them.”

This lack of funding for the Monetary Award Program was the focus of Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant’s statement on SB 2059, as well. The Shorewood

senator said the vote gives the governor the authority to authorize funds for MAP grants, community colleges and Illinois’ nine public universities.

“Though I am frustrated that the governor has been unwilling to fund higher education, I intend to continue supporting legislation that gives him an opportunity to honor the state’s commitment to students needing aid for college and demonstrate that higher education is a priority,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

The impact on higher education is particularly important, as MAP provides close to $5,000 in financial aid for about 150,000 low-income students each year. Many MAP recipients depend on the grant to reduce the financial burden of attending college, and all 57 of the state’s community colleges and public universities are equally affected by the program’s lack of funding.

Meanwhile, Rauner and his allies in the state legislature called SB 2059 nothing more than a way for Democrats to save face, adding that it wouldn’t fund the programs it identifies without adding to the state’s debt.

“Senate Democrats today admitted that this bill would do nothing to help higher education, MAP students or social services because there is no money to pay for it,” Kelly said in an email aimed at shifting the blame away from the governor and on to the bill’s supporters. “Rather than adding billions to our debt and risk further delaying payments to social service providers, the General Assembly needs to stay in Springfield and negotiate a balanced budget alongside structural reforms that create jobs and grow our economy.”

If you’re like me, the soundbytes and “official” statements from elected officials about the budget impasse and its effects on higher education funding are farcical – filled with grandiose language that says more about Springfield’s lack of accountability than the students who are being used as political bargaining chips.

And, if you share my frustrations, let me help sum up your thoughts on the war of words to this point in time, “So, what?”

So, what does this mean for the thousands of Illinois college students

who are waiting to know if they will be able to attend school next semester? So, what does this mean for Illinois colleges and universities that, according to Peoria Public Radio, are out more than $72 million because of a lack of MAP funding?

Now that each side has washed its hands of any responsibility for selling short the futures of thousands of Illinois students who depend on MAP, it seems state elected officials have abdicated their responsibility to residents and students, alike.

And, all of this politicized nonsense underscores something this news editor knows to be true: the MAP grant made me who I am, and every college student in the state deserves the opportunity to say the same.

Combined with the federal Pell grants, MAP allowed a kid who was raised by his grandmother and carried a lunch vouture in high school to earn his associate’s degree from the College of DuPage and his bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University. MAP gave me the opportunity to redeem myself from, let’s call it, a less than stellar high school career and become the first member of my family to earn a four-year degree.

It wasn’t easy growing up with less than most of my classmates, but my family and I made due. There was zero guarantee that I would be able to afford college after I graduated high school, regardless of academics. When I made the decision to go to college and learned about the various forms of student financial aid available, an entire world of possibilities opened up for me. I learned to be grateful and accountable, and I learned just how important and necessary a college education is in today’s society.

I also learned just how critical those first years of college can be for students who don’t have the same family and financial support as many of their peers. Understanding that is the main reason why I would one day like to be a community college professor and help students who, like myself, are trying to beat the odds and gain access to higher education. And, it’s why our elected officials should stop talking and fund MAP. Most importantly, however, my college experience taught me to be patient.

But as a former MAP recipient – someone who owes his success to student financial aid and someone who feels current college students are more than collateral damage in a political war of words – my patience with Springfield and the politicians we’ve sent there has worn thin.

Joliet West falls in DeKalb supersectional

After a season that could have gone much different following a stretch of losses following the

Pontiac Holiday Tournament, Joliet West learned about itself, matured as a team and made a push through

the playoffs that ended with a 6759 loss to eventual state runnerup Benet Academy at the DeKalb Supersectional at Northern Illinois University.

Like Benet, West was not expected to be playing in the supersectional this season and with only one senior (Darnell Smith, 7 minutes) seeing any floor time at NIU, the future is bright for the Tigers.

“Our season was ups and downs, peaks and valleys. We started the season off well, then after Pontiac, we had a rough stretch, where we had to play Simeon, Thornton and H-F, but came back in early February and didn’t lose until this game,” saidWest coach Nick DiForti.

“When I am predominately playing juniors and sophomores, the sky is the limit for our future. This is a testament to these kids and how

they matured through the season.

It says a lot about their character, hard work and dedication.”

West’s Trevian Bell led all scorers with 19 points, 17 in the second half, while Teyvion Kirk netted 17.

“This is the type of the season that not many people can say they had,” Kirk said. “We beat some of the best teams in the state and lost to some of the worst teams in the state. That helped us grow mentally.

We are very strong mentally. We went through a small block in the middle of the season where we lost like six of seven games and we could have easily said, ‘Ok, that’s it. Next season.’ But we came all the way (to the supersectional) to again play one of the best teams in the state.”

Team Mark starts fast, rolls to win in girls shootout A red-hot first half from Plainfield Central’s Hennessey Handy was enough for Team Mark to cruise to a 79-56 win over Team Scott Sunday at the Eighth Annual Voyager Media Prep Shootout at the Sullivan Center on the campus of the University of St. Francis.

Handy scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half en route to being named the MVP of the game.

Her point total is the second most in the game’s history, behind the 24 points from Gabby Williams in 2013.

“I had a lot of fun. We communicated and played great and it was a good experience to graduate and be able to play in an all star game,” Handy said. “I tried to do as much as I could. I wanted to break the record because people were telling me it was only 24. I just like to go and go and go. I love the game of basketball and it was a great opportunity to play in this.”

Team Mark took a 9-2 lead early in the game and despite a run from Team Scott to cut it to 12-8, Team Mark broke the game open to lead 34-11 and 44-26 at the half.

Every player scored for Team Mark. Joliet Central’s Monica Barefield had 13, while Mia Farrell of Joliet Catholic scored nine.

“I had a great time,” Barefield said.

“We had no bigs on our team and we had all shooters, so we just ran the ball. “ Farrell enjoyed playing with the area public school players.

“It was great to play with Monica (Barefield) and other players I have played with or against since fifth grade,” she said. “It was really cool.

Everyone was pretty selfless for an all star game. It was a really fast paced game for us not knowing each other. We seemed to really gel and had the same tempo and ran

“We started off kind of rough,” Williams said. “We didn’t really know many other people but I think we got better as the night went on. It was fun and different playing against my teammates.”

Morgan Jones (Joliet Central) and Jalynn Estrada (Niles West) each had six points, Lauren Porcelli (Downers North) and Janelle Alba Garner (Maine East) each scored four points for Team Scott.

Alba Garner was also honored with the Jeremy Izzo Character Award.

“I wasn’t expecting it and I was just listening and all of a sudden was like, I do those things,” Alba Garner said. “It was awesome.

Alyssa Fink (Plainfield South) had three points and Antwanetta Boswell (Plainfield South), Diamond Dortch (Romeoville), Maddie McTague (Maine East) and Sydney Arlis (Minooka) all scored two points.

Jordan Heberg and Dana O’Boye (Plainfield North) and Ashley Hare (Joliet Central) also competed.

“I told our guys that as juniors and sophomore, they experienced a full season that some teams will never experience,” DiForti said. “We were down big and came back, we were up big and lost, we won close games, lost close games. You name it, we have been through it and that will only help.

“They will only mature and grow as young men and while it is sad to say at the end of the year that we are looking forward to next year, but we know what we have coming back and we are pretty happy about that.”

Team Mark wins in first OT game In the first overtime game in the history of the Voyager Media Prep Shootout, Team Mark took down Team Scott 120-119 Sunday night at the Sullivan Center on the University of St. Francis campus for the eighth annual event.

It was Lockport’s Brandon Credit who hit the game-winning three-pointer in the corner to give Team Mark the lead in the final minute and Team Scott was unable to convert on two different opportunities to win the game.

“That last shot, I had a little space and I took the shot and it went in and that was cool,” Credit said.

“They had a height advantage over us, but we came out with the W. I loved this game, there was a bunch of highlight plays and a green light all the time.”

The two teams were tied at 112112 at the end of regulation in a game that didn’t appear it would be close early.

Team Scott jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 27-11 early on.

Team Mark slowly chipped away at the deficit the rest of the game and trailed 68-58 at the half.

A big run gave Team Mark its first lead at 97-94 as the two teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the game.

Team Mark’s Harold Davis of JCA was the MVP after scoring 23 points

with five three-pointers.

“All star games are great,” Davis said. “I got to play with a lot of people I knew and with (Jalen Jackson) my friend who I have played with my whole life. I have always been able to shoot, but I like to pass first and I got some oops in.

Usually, I like to drive, but today I let it fly.”

JCA’s Jalen Jackson scored 21, including showing jumping ability for the sub-6-foot guard.

“My goal here was to get at least one dunk and I got it,” Jackson said.

“We just went out there and had fun and didn’t have a coach breathing down our neck. We had no worries and just had fun.”

Joliet Central’s Malik Fuller had 19 for Team Mark.

“This is really exciting to come out here and play in this and get the dunks,” Fuller said. “Being around a bunch of good guys, it was a great time.”

Devon Sams of Bolingbrook had 15 points for Team Mark on five three pointers.”

Brad Perry of Maine South scored 14 points.

“It was good time. It was a good way to send out my high school basketball career,” he said. “I never played with any of these guys and it was a unique experience to play with and against guys I haven’t

played. I haven’t had those unique experiences, especially the one where I drove up the floor and reversed jammed.”

Credit tallied 10, Jacob Buchner of Plainfield South had nine, while Zach Grady of Bolingbrook scored five.

Matthew Mahlke and Deantre DeYoung each had a basket.

Downers South’s Donovan Ferguson had 17 points to lead Team Scott.

Ferguson and Elijah Goss of Plainfield (15 points) spent a lot of the game above the rim giving the fans a show.

“Antowine Locke (Bolingbrook) Kevin Krieger (Plainfield North) and each had 11 for Team Scott.

Coalition announces expo to help Joliet homeowners Expo set for April 9 at Joliet West High School The city of Joliet said its upcoming housing expo will provide prospective homeowners the resources they need to ease the home buying process.

The Joliet Housing Expo is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to noon April 9 at Joliet West High School. Representatives

in legal fees, but he signed off on invoices without gaining their approval.

“The difference in the billing was if we do the math at the originally agreed upon $250 an hour and calculate the rate at that, and then calculate it at the final billing hour… there’s a difference of around $660,000 in the billing that was not approved by the city council,” he said.

Figliulo said the city’s investigation would be better directed inward rather than outward at the firm.

“The city even paid a bill for

our services at these same rates as recently as last month,” he said. “If the mayor or his long time friend, the new inspector general, think those rates are improper and still had the city of Joliet pay them less than one month ago, maybe they ought to investigate themselves.”

O’DeKirk said knowing that Joliet put forth $15 million toward the purchase of Evergreen Terrace means the city is virtually locked in and further, the consensus among officials is that they should move forward with the redevelopment.

In 2014, the city won its condemnation lawsuit where the

U.S. Supreme Court determined they were permitted to proceed with the purchase of Evergreen Terrace. Two months ago, the owners of Evergreen Terrace sought to overturn the ruling and the valuation of the property in the Court of Appeals. A decision is expected later this spring.

To date, the city’s overrun costs include but are not limited to payments valued at more than $120,000 to consultants working to create a redevelopment plan and more than $260,000 has been paid to attorneys to negotiate with the Department of Housing and

Urban Development.

O’DeKirk said it’s unclear if other employees were involved in the matter. He added that it’s not certain what, if any, criminal charges could be brought.

“I believe that through the civil or criminal process that will come to light,” he said, adding that a breach of fiduciary duty is evident.

O’DeKirk said the city will likely reach out to law enforcement in pursuit of an investigation. He added that it’s unclear whether they’ll pursue civil or criminal charges.

JCA raises over $35K at St. Baldrick’s event in support of childhood cancer research The Joliet Catholic Academy community came together March 9 during their annual Spring Fling week to raise money in support of conquering childhood cancers.

The annual JCA St. Baldrick’s event has raised $35,000 at press time.

Participants included current JCA students and staff members, while area hairdressers and barbers volunteered their time to shave heads for the worthy cause.

Six current JCA staff members and fourteen students participated in the event. Junior Nick Sandora was this year’s top fundraiser, bringing in over $21,000. Four additional JCA students Ethan Goolsby, Jared Olson, Jacob Mihelich and Walter Osterberger all raised over $1,000 individually.

JCA teacher and St. Baldrick’s organizer Suzi Arnett said, “I’m so proud of the JCA community. Our success was due to the compassion we feel for serving others.”

Junior Nick Sandora was motivated to help out the cause when learning the story of 7-year-

old Payton O’Brien of Elmhurst, who lost his battle with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer, just before Christmas.

Sandora said, “Payton’s mother is friends with my aunt, and I wanted to reach out to their family and help support this cause. We sent emails, reached out to friends, family, neighbors and networked by word of mouth.”

Sandora and many of his classmates have plans to continue their fundraising efforts through St.

Baldrick’s in the upcoming years.

Volunteers who dedicate years of service are recognized by St. Baldrick’s for their efforts. Sandora has a goal of becoming a “Knight of the Bald Table”, which honors volunteers who give seven years of service to the cause.

“Every year I get a new found appreciation for the struggle others are going through and how blessed I’ve been to be healthy. My plan is go bigger each and every year with this event,” Sandora said.
