It was a sweet start to a program that crosses several communities, bringing together residents throughout Will County all for the love of reading. Nearly 100 people gathered for the kick-off of The Great Read at the Plainfield Public Library, where patrons gained insight from local candy maker Leslie Goddard’s about Chicago’s “sweet” history as a candy capital, and began a widereaching program to celebrate reading and literacy.

“We do dozens of fun, educational and entertaining programs related to the particular theme each year to interest people in whatever the topic is, but the main goal is always to celebrate and promote literacy, reading, community, conversation,” said Plainfield School District 202 spokesman Tom Hernandez, who is also on The Great Read committee.

“So, we were very excited and pleased with the turnout.”

He said one of the things that makes the program so unique is the involvement of so many communities. The Great Read started in 2004 as a one-time, roundtable discussion about censorship between the Plainfield Library and District 202, around the Ray Bradbury classic, “Fahrenheit 451.”

In 2008, Reading Across Plainfield became The Great Read when new partners from Joliet and Bolingbrook joined the program to encourage broader community participation, better reflect the areas served and emphasize the program’s literary focus.

and Plainfield Township, making it a true community event, Hernandez explained.

White Oak Library Director Scott Pointon agreed.

“One of the coolest things about The Great Read is that it brings together so many local area agencies – six libraries – and together we focus on one common goal,” Pointon said.

“The skill that goes into planning The Great Read, and in turn conducting all of the events, really proves that community partnerships are very powerful. I believe The Great Read coalition is far greater than the sum of the parts.”

The 2016 Great Read community literacy program will celebrate everything “Made in Illinois.”

Community members are encouraged to read books about

Illinois and participate in the many 2016 Great Read-related programs slated through May. Suggested books for both adults and younger readers, as well as films and a listing of events are posted on the Great Read website, www.greatread.org.

“The Great Read is an important initiative in our area because it unites the community through reading, discussions and events based around one theme,” said Melissa Bradley, communications manager at Fountaindale Public Library. “This year is particularly exciting because our theme is Made in Illinois. We all call this great state home, and there is so much to explore and

discover about Illinois’ impressive history, athletics, role in pop culture and overall diverse way of life. The Great Read’s programs and reading recommendations are dedicated to generating conversations around how unique Illinois is and what a rich history and future it has.”

The Great Read’s 10 participating libraries will host a long list of programs and special activities focusing on Illinois’ many cultural contributions – from fantastic food to classic films, iconic music, legendary authors and some of the best sports teams in history.

Coming up is Chicago’s Most Wanted at 6:30 p.m. March 14

at Fountaindale Public Library, Bolingbrook. From sports to gangsters to ghosts, Laura L. Enright presents amazing facts from her book “Chicago’s Most Wanted: The Top Ten Book of Murderous Mobsters, Midway Monsters and Windy City Oddities.”

In addition, area artists of all ages are invited and encouraged to take part in the Great Read Art Contest.

Winners in three age groups from pre-kindergarten to adult will win a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card, and could win additional prizes through their home libraries. The 2016 Great Read Grand Finale will feature film enthusiast Steve Frenzel’s program celebrating “Chicago in the Movies” from 6-8 p.m. April 28 at the White Oak Library in Romeoville, 201 W. Normantown Road. The Great Read Art Contest winners will also be announced and awarded at the finale.

Law enforcement sweep nets murder suspect Joliet man charged with first-degree murder among 19 arrested in multi-jurisdictional operation

A Joliet man was charged with first-degree murder in a case dating back to 2010, following a multijurisdictional law enforcement operation that led to the arrest of 19 area gang members.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office announced the arrests during a press conference Wednesday afternoon at the Joliet Police Department. Officials said the operation led to the arrest of about 19 gang members from the Joliet area for federal and state charges, ranging from narcotics and weapons offenses to murder.

“Street gangs rely on organization and numbers to wreak havoc in our communities, but these multijurisdictional sweeps tear down their structures and reduce their ranks significantly,” Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow said.

The investigation leading up to the sweep helped detectives gather evidence pointing toward Bowers, eventually leading to a murder warrant and first-degree murder charges. His bond was set at $2.5 million.

“The involvement of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] expands our reach exponentially and demonstrates our resolve to neutralize violent gang activity,” Glasgow added.

“We’ve been conducting gang sweeps since the early 1990s, and they have always reduced the kind of street violence that claimed the life of Nichole Rodriguez in 2010.”

Bowers also faces six counts of weapons violations in connection with the operation, which included the U.S. Attorney’s Office; ATF; Will County State’s Attorney’s Office; Joliet Police Department; and the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad.

Law enforcement focused primarily on Latin King gang members in Joliet. State charges were filed against 14 suspects and federal charges are expected against another five.

“The Latin Kings are a very organized gang with an extensive history of violence and drug dealing within our community,” Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said. “This joint operation will have a lasting impact on the gang’s organizational hierarchy and overall effectiveness, and will undoubtedly improve the safety and quality of life in the city of Joliet.”

Approximately 170,000 vehicles travel the Stevenson Expressway between Interstate 355 and Interstate 90/94 each day. Last month, state officials introduced a plan to alleviate congestion along this busy 25-mile stretch of highway.

The I-55 managed lanes project would add at least one lane in each direction between the Veterans Memorial Tollway

and the Dan Ryan Expressway, according to Illinois Department of Transportation. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner announced in February that legislative leaders introduced a legislative resolution that would give IDOT the go ahead to explore adding managed lanes to I-55 under a private-public partnership.

“By using existing resources to leverage private investment, we can build the type of infrastructure that allows Illinois to better compete in

the 21st century,” Rauner said in a release announcing the resolution.

His office added that the partnership between public and private interests would lower the cost of the project and shorten its timeline.

“This is an innovative project that will create jobs, improve the region’s quality of life and show that Illinois is open for business,”

Benton also credited the arrests to the cooperation of the various agencies involved in the sweep.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the members of the ATF, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Will County State’s Attorney’s

Office, MANS and the Joliet Police Department for their hard work and dedication throughout this lengthy investigation,” he said.

Jeffery Magee, ATF special agent in charge, said the arrests and charges are a product the agencies’ commitment to get firearms and criminals who use them behind bars.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our federal, state and local law enforcement colleagues to combat firearms violence throughout Will County and the entire state of Illinois,” he added.

Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, also recognized the local, state and federal law enforcement officers for their work during the investigation.

Engine Team qualifies for national competitions Students from the JolietTownship High School engine-building team are advancing to nationals, with two teams qualifying after a competition in Schaumburg earlier this month.

The two teams will compete in national competitions held in Las Vegas and Indianapolis in November and December.

Theengine-buildingcompetition requires students to disassemble and reassemble a Chevy V-8 race engine using only hand tools.

Teams are timed and the engine is expected to run once assembled.

To qualify for nationals, teams had to finish with a time under 34 minutes, including penalties.

Team Firestone finished in third place with a time of 26 minutes and 10 seconds, and team DEI finished in eighth place with a time of 33 minutes and 19 seconds, according to Joliet Central Automotive Instructor Sean Reisdorf.

“A total of 30 teams competed,

and the first place champions were only 2 minutes and 41 seconds faster than our team [Firestone] with a finishing time of 23 minutes and 29 seconds,” Reisdorf added.

Before the trek to nationals, the two teams will have one last chance to improve their rankings at the Route 66 Raceway Invitational held July 30-31.

Reisdorf, who is the Engine Team sponsor, has set an ambitious goal for his team. He is hoping to bring the final time down to under 18 minutes.

Some of country music’s biggest names will headline the Saturday concert schedule for the 2016 Taste of Joliet.

The Joliet Park District announced that country stars Trace Adkins, Frankie Ballard, Granger Smith and RaeLynn are scheduled to perform Saturday, June 25.

Adkins has three No. 1 albums, 11 albums that have reached the top 10, four No. 1 songs and 31 singles that have reached the Billboard Top 40. He also has an album that will be released

before the Taste of Joliet, which will run June 24 – 26 at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Front section tickets for Saturday’s performances are $40, which includes admission to the festival and a reserved section directly in front of the stage. General Admission tickets are $10 online and $15 the day of show. This ticket includes admission to the festival and the concert.

“Relieving the congestion on this stretch of I-55 must be a priority for the state of Illinois,” Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno said. “However, we must

I was beaming with excitement one afternoon in spring 2010, during one of my journalism classes at Roosevelt University. We were studying how to use new media and technology within our field, when a nearby classmate, who was not diagnosed with a disability, made a comment that hit me like a brick.

“Why is this technology so retarded,” the classmate said, without knowing who might be affected by this word.

The classmate had no idea that the use of the “r-word,” even as it was not directed towards me, still hurt.

“Using the r-word against us athletes hurts us because most people don’t think before they actually say the words,” said Georgia Hunter, my friend and fellow athlete and Global Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois.

Georgia has been diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Today, March 2, thousands of people across the country are spreading awareness in the eighth annual Spread the Word to End the Word campaign.

For those of us with special needs, as well as for our family and friends, the word “retard(ed),” or the “r-word” as it is referred to in the campaign, is extremely offensive – even when the word is not directed toward us. If someone, like my former classmate, uses the “r-word” about an inanimate object to mean that the object is slow, this connotes a similar meaning that

those of us with special needs might learn or act a little slower than others.

Thus, there is a negative tone to the use of the “r-word.”

“The cool thing about Spread the Word to End the Word is that there are thousands of events across the country, and everyone kind of goes about it a bit differently,” said Tim Shriver Jr., cofounder of the campaign. “Every event has a pledge banner where people sign their name and take the pledge to not only stop using the ‘r-word’ [themselves] but to speak up when others use it.”

People can join more than 585,197 other online pledges by signing the pledge electronically and learning more about Spread the Word to End the Word at www.r-word.org.

When I was delivered three-and-athird months premature 27 years ago, people commonly used the “r-word” as an acceptable term to describe people with visible and invisible intellectual disabilities. Fast forward to present day, medical professionals are becoming more understanding and respectful with their word choice.

Take my sister, Stefanie Smrokowski, 25, for example. She is a doctor of physical therapy and has grown up with an older brother who has special needs. She feels encouraged about the declining use of the “r-word” among medical professionals.

“It’s becoming very common

knowledge that you should not use that word,” Stefanie said, adding that she rarely hears the word, especially among younger physical therapists. “There are still some people that maybe aren’t as aware of that, but I think in general we’re all going towards that being common sense to not use that word.”

My friend Tim Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics Inc., said that trend is encouraging.

“Your sister’s quotes give us all confidence that we can win the battle against humiliation and play unified to teach respect the world over,” he wrote in an email regarding a previous Special Voices column.

Despite the cognitive struggles that myself and others with intellectual disabilities face on a daily basis, we overcome our challenges by celebrating the abilities that we do have.

Last summer, I was a leading journalist producing the No. 1 update podcast at the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015. Earlier last year, I was among 10 other advocates named a national finalist for the American Association of People with Disabilities 2015 Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award.

In 2012, I received the Les Brownlee Scholarship from the Chicago Headline Club, as well as the Matthew Freeman Award for Social Justice from Roosevelt University, and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism.

A Joliet Catholic Academy girls basketball season that started off with a lot of questions ended last week with an answer.

The Angels fell 73-70 to eventual sectional champion Morgan Park in the Peotone Sectional and had a chance in the final minutes to tie with an open three-pointer.

“Nobody expected us to have a game like this with Morgan Park, but we knew we could do it,” said Mia Farrell. “The score wasn’t in our favor, but it still felt good to show that we could play with them and we aren’t the team people thought we were.”

In the loss, Joliet Catholic showed how far they had come as a team that opened the season by losing players and coaches.

“You can’t ask for anything better with the adversity we went through,” said Florida Statebound senior Nicole Ekhomu,

who had 37 points in the loss.

“We had three starters leave, our coach left. We have been through a lot. I love this team and I think this is one of the best teams I have ever played on. This is not how we wanted it to end, but we went out fighting and that is all we can ask for.”

Despite the loss, first-year coach Nick Leonard was happy with the effort.

“The effort that we put out there was tremendous,” he said.

“We had an opportunity early and they were off their game and we missed some shots. We have been in a lot of games where teams have been up 10 and we didn’t have that run in us and then we would have games where we one shot away and couldn’t get over the hump.”

USF falls in semifinals Robert Morris University Illinois shot 62 percent from the field in the second half en route to a 99-87 upset win over No. 1-ranked University of St. Francis in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals Saturday at the Sullivan Center.

With the victory, Robert Morris (23-9) advances to the CCAC Championship game to be held Tuesday night against Indiana University South Bend. The Saints, whose 14-game overall winning streak and 19-game homecourt streak came to an end, finished the regular season with a 28-3 record. As the CCAC regular-season champion, USF has earned an

automatic bid to next month’s NAIA Division II National Tournament.

USF used a 13-2 run late in the first half to build a 42-26 advantage with 4:31 to go in the period. Robert Morris outscored the Saints 14-2 the rest of the half to cut the deficit to 44-40 at the intermission.

Robert Morris took the lead for good, 53-51, four minutes into the second stanza on a Terrelle Green jumper. The Eagles pushed their advantage to double digits for the first time in the game, 73-62, with eight minutes to go. Corey McCrary sandwiched a 3-point basket and a layup around a Johnny Stevens 3-pointer during a 54-second span to put the Eagles on top 88-67 with five minutes remaining. USF got no

closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

After being outshot from the field 65 percent to 38 percent in the first half, the Eagles shot 62 percent in the second period to 40 percent for USF. Robert Morris held a 40-36 edge on the boards; half of the Eagles’ rebounds came on the offensive end, resulting in 21 second-chance points.

Green and McCrary led Robert Morris with 26 and 21 points, respectively, while Markee Williams finished with 10 points and six assists.

• No. 22-ranked St. Ambrose University upset No. 4 University of St. Francis 79-69 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinals Friday night at the Sullivan Center.

The win sent St. Ambrose (228) into the CCAC Championship game Monday night at No. 7-ranked Olivet Nazarene University, which toppled No. 2 Saint Xavier University in semifinal play Friday evening in Chicago. USF, which saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end, finished the regular season with a 28-4 record. As the CCAC regular-season champions, the Saints have earned an automatic bid to next month’s NAIA Division II National Tournament.

USF jumped out to a 7-0 lead and built a 19-10 edge at the end of the first quarter. With the Saints on top 26-20 late in the second stanza, the Bees went on an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the contest, 28-27.

A 3-pointer from Jessica Mlachnik with six seconds left in the half gave St. Ambrose a 35-32 edge at the break.

JCA announces Hall of Champions class Joliet Catholic Academy has announced its third Hall of Champions class, which continues to speak to the depth of the tradition and talent both on and off the playing fields that the school has produced over the years. The previous classes were made up of a “Who’s Who” of athletic royalty in the Joliet area: Gordie Gillespie, Bill Gullickson, Allie Quigley, Jim Stefanich, Tom Thayer, Mike Alstott, Terry Gannon, Mark Grant, Tippy Madarik, and Liz Tortorello-Nelson.

The 2016 class is more of the same, highlighted by a legendary area coach, a professional baseball player,apioneerinwomen’s athletics in the Joliet area, the school’s only state wrestling champion, and one of the greatest three-sport athletes the Joliet area has ever seen.

JCA Athletic Director Dan Sharp is proud to announce the 2016 Hall of Champions class: Jane Condon ’75, Pat Mudron ’67, Mark Parker ’76, Jack Perconte ’72, and Pat Sullivan ’61. This year’s class will be honored on Saturday, September 2, 2016 at Joliet Catholic Academy with a reception and dinner. More details will be available closer to the event.

• Pat Sullivan’s name is

synonymous with basketball in the Joliet area. After beginning his coaching career at Providence Catholic, Sullivan spent 35 years at the University of St. Francis, where he served as the head basketball coach, athletic director, and athletic chairman until his retirement in 2010. Sullivan led the Saints to over 500 victories. The valedictorian of the 1965 graduating class at Lewis University, Sullivan was mentored by legendary area coach, and fellow JCA Hall of Champions member Gordie Gillespie.

Sullivan, a 1961 JCHS graduate is a member of numerous Hall of Fames, including the Joliet Area Hall of Fame, Lewis University’s Hall of Fame, and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. 12 times throughout his career he received “Coach of the Year” recognition from various organizations. He also founded USF’s “Brown and Gold Night”, which has featured legendary speakers from the sporting world including Al McGuire, Mike Ditka, John Wooden, Ray Meyer, Dan Hampton, Paul Hornung, and Bart Starr to name a few.

• Jane Condon ’75, St. Francis’

first superstar athlete, earned varsity letters in five different sports: volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, track and field, and tennis. Condon led the Angels to a 27-0 record in basketball during their first two years of Interscholastic Athletics competition, which began in the 1973-1974 school year. In ’74 she averaged 18 points per game in basketball, while finishing third in the I-8 conference meet in track, and fifth in the district meet in the discus, qualifying for state.

• Pat Mudron ’67 is perhaps one of the most powerful athletes to ever play for the Hilltoppers on the gridiron, but he was a multisport star during his high school years. As a senior, Mudron won the 1967 state championship as a heavyweight in wrestling, going 270-1 in the process. He finished his high school varsity wrestling career an astounding 100-5-3, never losing a regular season match. Mudron was a two-time All-State honoree in football, in ’66 as a tackle, and in ’67 as a linebacker. He led the Hilltoppers to an 8-1 record his senior season, before the advent of the IHSA football playoffs. For his efforts in wrestling and football,

Mudron was named the Will County Athlete of the Year in 1966-1967.

He earned a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated tackling O.J. Simpson from USC in a game played in front of 100,000 fans.

• Mark Parker ’76 quarterbacked Joliet Catholic’s first state championship football team in 1975 to a perfect 13-0 record, where he passed for 1,237 yards. A star on the gridiron, Parker’s athletic exploits also carried over on the diamond and the hard court, making him one of the first and greatest alltime three-sport athletes to don the Victory Light (Coach Gillespie

batted .270 for his career.

• A new addition to 2016 JCA Hall of Champions is the “Legends Category”, which honors one coach or athlete from the pre-World War Two era. The Hall of Champions Committee is proud to announce John Carroll as this year’s nominee.

Carroll is the all-time leader in wins among boys basketball coaches with a 193-80 record, guiding the Hilltoppers to three national championships during his coaching tenure. His 1926-27 team went 24-0 and his 1933-34 team went 29-3, both winning national titles.

“It is all about loyalty,” she said.

“We had girls who hadn’t played in two years come back out just to play with us and give us a chance. If they didn’t do that, we wouldn’t have had a team and I appreciate them for staying with it. We were able to build good chemistry and the girls coming

back in were a perfect fit for us.”

The Angels (16-9) know it was their chemistry that helped them get through the adversity.

“It has been a lot. It has been an up and down season,” Farrell said. “We had three transfers, we have a whole new coaching

staff. We have gone through three head coaches in our years.

These girls that I have played with, I have played with then since fifth grade. This wasn’t the ideal way we wanted it to end, but we came in and played our butts off.”

Voyager Media trivia night brings out the geeks, again 2nd annual trivia night held Feb. 24

More than 50 participants came out to Hollywood Palms Theater in Naperville Feb. 24 for a truly epic trivia competition.

For the second year in a row, Voyager Media held its trivia night competition. The event invited teams of four to answer questions ranging from books and comics to movies and video games.

For the second straight year, team Trivia Newton John blasted the competition. Team members Stacey Adams, of Plainfield; Amanda Kramer, of Joliet; Summer Kornfeind, of Joliet; and Emily Stowe, of Plainfield, each won a 3-day pass to the annual Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.

The convention, known simply as C2E2, is scheduled for March 18-20 at the McCormick Place in

downtown Chicago.

The trivia competition was divided into six rounds, with 10 questions in each.

Teams were given one minute per question before moving on.

For Trivia Newton John, the win came down to the wire. They finished only one point ahead of second place team Kylo Ren and Stimpy and two points ahead of third place Stella Star and the Starcrashers.

In the end, everyone who attended the event was a winner.

Door prizes were handed out by event sponsor Amazing Fantasy Comics, located in Lockport. The prizes included water bottles, sweatshirts and entertainment figurines.

Hollywood Palms cosponsored the event.
