Traditions abound at Hometown Irish Parade

esidents and business owners painted the town green during Sunday’s annual Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade.

Despite the rain, those taking part in the March 13 festivities took to the streets with excitement for the parade, which ran in a squareshaped route south of Lockport Street toward Commercial Street, bound from east to west at James and Illinois streets. A roaring crowd, a plethora of stunts and lots of candy were some of the main takeaways for paradegoers.

Ken Barvian, a coordinator for the event, said he hopes the community enjoyed their time spent in downtown Plainfield.

“We’ve been doing this [parade] for a long time,” he said. “We started planning in September, getting the website up. It’s all volunteers.

This is something the Village Preservation Association does to

give back to the community.”

On average, the parade draws 6,000 to 8,000 area residents to downtown Plainfield, and last year’s festivities attracted a record 14,000 people. With rain projected in the forecast leading up to this year’s event, parade organizers were hoping the weather wouldn’t turn people away.

Their wish came true, as large crowds lined the streets Sunday afternoon to celebrate Irish heritage.

Jimmy Shemroske, of Plainfield, was one of the many people who attended the parade. He said he regularly comes out to see the annual parade, and was enjoying this year’s parade. Along with his wife, Lisa, the Shemroskes were decked out in St. Patrick’s Day gear. Jimmy said they really enjoy getting into the spirit of the holiday.

“We’re not even Irish,” Lisa joked.

Jimmy said the couple was Polish.

it all and that means drinking of course,” he joked.

Drew Stephens, of Plainfield, was hanging out with his kids in the tent designated as the family area. He said he likes coming out to the parade and seeing how festive everyone gets.

He said he and his family are Irish and for them, that creates some added meaning for the festivities.

“St. Patrick’s Day is just a way to reconnect a little bit with the music,” he said. “Everybody wears green and everybody kind of comes together. Everybody’s a little bit Irish today.”

Stephens said celebrating with a parade is a great way to cap off

the weekend, adding that it’s a fun time and it brings the community together.

Richard Morris, of Plainfield, also attended the parade with his wife and children. He said they come out to the parade every year.

“I like the fact that everyone comes out,” he said. “Usually, there’s a little bit better weather, but I think we’ll have a good showing.”

He said the family usually attends the parade in Chicago, as well as Plainfield’s. But with rain in

the forecast, they decided to stay close to home.

“It’s nice to at least get the family together and walk around and enjoy the town,” he said. “The way they fixed up Plainfield over the last 5-10 years, it looks nice and it’s nice to come down and walk around.”

‘Dancing With Our Local Stars’ set for April 9

The stage is set for the 10th annual Guardian Angel Community Services “Angelica: Dancing With Our Local Stars” gala and fundraiser.

The event – scheduled April 9 at Bobak’s Signature Events & Conference Center in Woodridge – features six local stars who have prepared a routine with a professional dancer that they perform at the event.

This year’s lineup includes Monica Biban (D’Arcy), Greg Chellino (Chellino Crane), Donnie Chestnutt (Providence Bank & Trust), John Horn (Joliet Catholic Academy), Michele Vana

(Kurtz Ambulance), and state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-86.

The dancers will be judged individually by a panel of local star judges, whose votes are calculated along with table votes from event attendees. A fourth judge’s spot will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, which raised $13,000 alone at the 2015 event.

Once the votes are tallied, the top dancer is announced and presented with a mirror ball trophy.

“The event would not be possible without the support and commitment of our community,”

fundraising and operations manager Jane Ukleja said.

“The many generous sponsors and donors, the local stars who commit their personal time to learn and rehearse a dance routine, and of course all of those who purchase a ticket and attend.”

Proceeds from the event support eight programs operated

by Guardian Angel Community Services, which reached more than 63,000 individuals in 2015.

Joliet works to keep tap water safe

Public utilities director says Joliet not at risk of Flint-like contamination

From the Democratic presidential debate to national news coverage, the Flint, Michigan, water crisis has received a wave of media attention and forced cities across the country to re-examine their water supplies.

During the Jan. 31 state of the city address, Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk was asked whether the Flint’s water crisis had lead city officials to consider the overall safety of the tap water residents are drinking. O’Dekirk dismissed the concern, saying the city is constantly working to ensure the safety of its water supply. One group taking action to prevent the people of Joliet from suffering the

same fate as residents of Flint is the city’s public utilities department.

Public Utilities Director James Eggen said the city wants to reassure those living and doing business in Joliet that they are in good hands.

“The city of Flint, from the information we’ve been able to ascertain, changed their water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River, and they adjusted their treatment process,” he said.

“One of the critical pieces of the treatment is the chemicals that are added after the water filtration, and that’s the phosphate that needs to be added to the water.”

Phosphate has minerals, for example, that help to build up a coating on the inside of pipes, whether it’s iron pipes or in the case of Flint, lead pipes.

Because Joliet is an older town, Eggen said the city does have some lead pipes in its system.

“The water chemistry is different than the treatment process for Flint, Michigan,” Eggen said. “We’re on a groundwater system, so we’ve got a higher hardness on our water.”

The company presented Joliet Junior College’s Veterans Resource Center with a check for $5,000 during a March 9 event at the college.

During the presentation, Amazon general manager Mike Flannery said the company has a long-standing history of recruiting military veterans and

reservists for careers with the company.

“Amazon is committed to giving back in Joliet, where its more than 1,000 full-time associates live and work,” the company said in a news release.

Amazon also announced plans to add 500 new full-time jobs at the company’s Joliet fulfillment center. The company said anyone interested in learning more or applying should visit www. workatamazonfullfillment.com.

In December 2015, the Joliet City Council approved a contract to purchase phosphorus that would be applied after water filtration.

In February 2015, phosphorus removal planning was backed by city officials, allowing the city to adhere to new environmental regulations.

Eggen said Joliet is looking at how it can adapt to new measures that have been introduced.

“We’re going to have to do some enhancements in our wastewater treatment plants to determine the most economical alternative for the city,” he said.

Every three years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires Joliet to complete copper and lead testing on water. That requirement is the same as other

big cities, such as Flint and Chicago.

For its copper and lead testing, Joliet typically collects samples from kitchen faucets inside homes at select locations and sends those samples to the Illinois EPA. “Any facility at the point where the water is added to the distribution system, we have to provide sampling at those points,” Eggen said.

Joliet has 11 water treatment plants and well locations are scattered throughout the city, according to the public utilities director. The treatment plants mostly coincide with the placement of the city’s water supply, which Eggen said comes from deep wells.

Joliet teacher arrested for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child Dirksen Junior High teacher removed from school prior to arrest A teacher at Dirksen Junior High in Joliet arrested last week for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child will appear in front of a Grundy County judge March 24.

Kyle R. Camp, 36, of Minooka, was arrested at his home at 6:30 p.m. March 4 after allegations emerged that Camp had improper contact with a student. Officials at Dirksen said they became aware of the allegations at the end of the school day, and immediately

Moving forward, the Illinois EPA determined that the gravel wells of Joliet’s water supply could be more susceptible to synthetic organic contamination, or manmade compounds, according to 2015 Joliet Drinking Water Quality Report. It does not, however, consider the bedrock wells to be susceptible to other types of contamination.

The findings in the report are based on a number of criteria, including monitoring conducted at the wells, monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system, the available hydrogeologic data on the wells and the land-use activities in the recharge area of the wells.

Students and parents who have any other concerns should contact the principal’s office.

“The water level of the aquifers continue to drop and there are concerns by some experts that wells will go dry in the future,” according to 2015 Joliet Drinking Water Quality Report. “It is a reality that the groundwater supply will need to be supplemented with an additional surface water supply.

The addition of surface water supplies then allows for new contaminants to be introduced into the water system.”

In 2017, Joliet is again expected to provide a minimum of 50 water samples to the agency. City staff typically will provide and send out 70-80 samples, allowing the Illinois EPA to review what’s collected.

Additionally, Eggen said the city officials put together an annual water quality report for its Joliet customers, summarizing new developments.

“That’ll be going out in June this year,” he said. “We are going to expand and do an additional write-up – different from last year – to address the issue of what’s happening in Flint, Michigan.”

Arrest made in Joliet double homicide Bourbonnais man charged with 2 counts of firstdegree murder

Joliet police arrested a Bourbonnais man for the murder of a man and woman whose bodies were found inside a Joliet auto body repair shop March 9.

William N. Krasawski, 41, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with two counts of firstdegree murder, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

On March 9, an employee at Fleet Specialty Painting discovered two bodies inside the shop, located in the 800 block of East Cass Street. Police were notified at approximately 11:45 a.m., and identified the deceased as 48-year-

old Michael Oram Sr., of Joliet, and 43-year-old Jamie Wills, of Lockport.

“There were injuries that were consistent with homicide, but that’s all that we’re going to say about it at this time,” Joliet Police Deputy Chief Al Roechner said during a press conference March 9.

At the time, Roechner said police were investigating the crime scene and analyzing surveillance footage from a couple nearby businesses.

The state’s attorney did not say what led investigators to Krasawski, other than he was arrested during the course of the investigation into the murders.

9 Troy educators named Joliet Area Great Teachers

Chamber award recognizes teachers who inspire desire to learn, achieve

Nine of the 30 Joliet Area Great Teachers selected this year by the Joliet Chamber of Commerce and Industry are educators at Troy Community School District 30-C. The teachers were chosen by the chamber’s education committee and honored at a banquet at the Jacob Henry Mansion’s Victorian Ballroom in February. The Troy teachers are Misty Dillon, of Troy Crossroads Elementary; Matt Crawford, Trudie Howard and Christy McGovern, all of Troy Craughwell Elementary; Jackie Brosi, of Troy Heritage Trail Elementary; Stephanie Adamowski, of Troy HoferElementary;HeatherElkins, of William B. Orenic Intermediate School; and Maureen Smith and

Shari Pagel, both of Troy Middle School.

“We are proud of our teachers who received this great honor,” said Troy District 30-C Superintendent Todd Koehl.

“And, we thank those who took the time to nominate them and build that relationship.

What makes the Joliet Area Great Teachers nomination so powerful is that it can be made by students, parents, colleagues or community members.

Koehl added that the recognition focuses on the impact a teacher has on the person who submits a nomination.

“This singular reason means that teachers are recognized for any number of gifts they have,” Todd said. “In the end, though, the overwhelming trait is the ability to build relationships.”

The chamber’s program, which started in 2008, recognizes educators who have instilled in students a desire to learn and achieve, among other criteria.

Board approves raises for substitutes Rate for substitute teachers raised to $115 per day, effective next school year The Troy District 30-C Board of Education recently raised the pay rate for substitute teachers from $105 to $115 per day, effective at the beginning of the next school year. Substitute teacher associates’ rates will also rise, from $72 to $80 per day.

According to Troy School District 30-C Human Resources Director Paul Schrik, substitute teachers can include those in the community who, for example, are retired, or those who are still in the workforce and have some weekdays off, or stay-athome parents who wish to work outside the home now and then.

Substitute teachers do not have to come from teaching backgrounds, the district said.

Schrik said the district has a strong appreciation for its substitutes.

“We trust them to work with our most valuable assets – our students,” Schrik said. “The qualities we look for in a good

sub are that they are caring, enjoy working with children, are flexible and appreciate a dynamic work environment.”

Troy substitute teacher Nikki Randich thinks more people should consider substitute teaching in local schools. She said it’s fun, challenging, rewarding and makes a difference in the lives of the community’s children.

“It’s different every day,” Randich said. “For me, it’s the best of both worlds. I get to work and still be involved with my kids.”

Karen Stakenas said the job is very flexible, as well.

“In addition to the competitive pay that Troy offers, our substitutes also have the flexibility of working around their own schedules,” Stakenas said. “And they love it.

One thing I always hear from our subs is that they love working in our schools because of the wonderful staff and facilities, the kindness they are shown and the obvious commitment that Troy has to serving its students.”

Stakenas said a good substitute teacher or aide will have a desire to help students succeed, the ability to follow prepared lesson plans and is willing to help out however necessary.

If you are beyond sick and tired of hearing about the fiscal problems in Illinois, I understand completely. There seems to be no end in sight to a crisis many years in the making, and one that threatens to take us through an entire fiscal year without an approved budget.

My purpose here is not to change your politics, but to share some of my knowledge and experience as it relates to funding social services in our state. worth every penny We pay our social service workers shockingly low wages in Illinois.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social and human service assistants in Illinois make just $28,770 annually, versus a national average of $29,270. Substance abuse counselors don’t fair much better, pulling in just $34,000 per year – well below the national average of $39,000.

My own work history has taken me to hospitals, residential treatment facilities and jails. For most of this time, even with years of experience and an advanced degree, I made no more than $12-$14 per hour.

And my experiences are not unusual.

Inevitably, a question arises about how to afford increased budgets for social service agencies in the face of an already massive state deficit. Won’t spending more on services take away from other important government functions, including infrastructure and education? At the risk of oversimplifying the issue, the answer is no, it won’t.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, every dollar invested in addiction treatment services yields a return of $4 to $7 by reducing drug-related crimes, and lowering criminal justice and healthcare costs.

In addition, benefits are seen from fewer interpersonal conflicts, greater workplace productivity and fewer drugrelated accidents, including overdoses and deaths. Other types of services see similar financial benefits.

The Illinois Department of Human Services eats up a large share of taxpayer money, and some of the money they receive could be better spent.

In my time in this industry, I’ve seen new leaders come in and propose various ways of supporting social

But pet projects or far-flung grant ideas have undermined efforts of many agencies by awarding dollars to fly-by-night groups that formed simply to appeal to the people in charge at the time. In the end, these groups closed up or left the state, while the committed organizations have suffered.

It has become a well-established rite of spring that agencies across the state must band together, protest in Springfield, write letters to representatives and flood their local papers with letters explaining why they should be supported. Despite operating with mere skeleton crew staffs that work with highly challenging populations, these programs are forced to justify their existence every year.

Questions get raised: Do we really need to pay for people with heroin addiction? Can’t families just support their sick family members? Why does someone with schizophrenia need a permanent case manager?

The work done by social service providers encompasses a huge range of important functions, including caring for the most vulnerable populations.

Village of Shorewood rolling along into spring By rick chapman Mayor of Shorewood Lenny’s Gas and Wash looks to be open by April. Within this service center there will be a Dunkin’ Donuts and a Pop’s Beef Sandwich Shop in the main store, as well as a full service car wash alongside. As the gas station nears completion, I hope our residents to the south and far west find it to be a greater convenience.

Other news: The 2 million gallon water tank on mound road is now in full service, allowing Shorewood to come into compliance with state requirements to have at least 2.5 million gallons of

water in above ground storage at any given time in case of emergencies. The north section of Parkshore Drive will have the storm sewer put underground this year, completing the road drainage improvements.

Due to the aging sewer systems in our older part of the village, we will be performing a smoke test on the system this year to identify where groundwater is leaking into our pipes. We are billed by the amount that we pump to the Joliet treatment plant, so therefore it is essential that we make our system tight and not pump unnecessary amounts during rain events. When we are in your

neighborhood, you will be notified by the contractor by phone, as well as with letters to your home. We will also use door hangers to help get the word out. This test should not affect you in anyway, but if you do notice anything please call the village immediately. The number will be on the notices that will be sent to you.

Spring and summer are on the way, meaning more children will be out playing. Please be extra careful and keep the speeds down within our subdivisions. When it comes to the safety of our children, one accident is too many. Please drive with extra caution.

Tigers defeat Joliet Central, Oswego to win sectional title

This was supposed to be next year.

With a talented and young roster, everyone outside of the Joliet West locker room predicted good things for the Tigers next season when the team would be a year older.

However, the Tigers didn’t want to wait.

West defeated Oswego 48-41 Friday night to win the Lockport Sectional.

“I am proud of these kids,” said Joliet West coach Nick DiForti. “We hit a drought right after Pontiac and everyone doubted us, even locally.

But, they are young and they are going to go through those roller coasters. That is the seventh game in a row we have won and that is a testament to the kids to realize in mid February that they need to mature or it will be the end of the season.”

West came out aggressive, leading 9-2 after the first quarter and 26-13 at half.

Oswego made a run of its own, cutting the lead to 28-24 after three, but West came back. Led by Teyvion Kirk, who scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter, the Tigers held Oswego at bay to claim the win.

West got balanced scoring, as Trevian Bell led the team with 12 points, while Tabyous Casterberry and Kirk added 11 each. Jason Bingham scored seven early points before spraining his left ankle. He exited the game and did not return, however, DiForti said he will be ready for Tuesday.

Oswego was a two-man team, as Malique Ross and Brice Robinson combined to score 40 of the Panthers’ 41 points.

“It is not one person who does it all,” DiForti said. “You can never put your finger on just one thing. It has

Voyager Media’s Prep Shootout Sunday

The eighth annual Voyager Media Prep Shootout is back again at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Tip time for the girls game is at 5:30 p.m., while the boys play at 7 p.m. Cost $5 for adults, $2 for students.

Last year was the first year of the fantasy draft featuring Mark Gregory against Scott Taylor, with Scott’s team winning both games. That has put Mark in revenge mode this year.

In the girls game, Team Mark is led by Alcorn State-bound

Monica Barefield of Joliet Central and Hennessey Handy of Plainfield Central.

He has a pair of state champions in Elise Stout and Sami Valentine of Benet and several regional champions in Brittney Patrick of Bolingbrok and Adriana Acosta and Mia Farrell of Joliet Catholic.

The rest of his lineup consists of Julia Sirvinskas (Maine South), Annie Carlson and Amanda Prete (Westmont), Taylor Cogdell (Plainfield East), Kelly McLean (Downers South) and Kierra Tyler (Joliet West).

While Mark went with a guardoriented lineup, Scott picked up some post players in Alyssa Fink and Antwanetta Boswell

(Plainfield South), Morgan Jones (Joliet Central) and Sydney Arlis (Minooka).

He also has a large group of three-point specialists in Ashley Hare (Joliet West), Riley Eckhart (Maine South), Kaitlyn Williams (JCA) and Skye Osborne (Romeoville).

Like Mark, Scott has a pair of 16-plus point per game scorers in Janelle Alba Garner (Maine East) and Jordan Heberg (Plainfield North).

Also on the team are Diamond Dortch (Romeoville), Jaylnn Estrada (Niles West), Maddie McTague (Maine East), Dana O’Boye (Plainfield North) and Lauren Porcelli (Downers

North).

The boys game will again feature the top senior talent in the Voyager Media coverage area.

Mark’s team is led by a group of big-time scorers in Jalen Jackson (JCA), Jacob Buchner (Plainfield South) and Matt Cappelletti (Romeoville), all of whom average more than 15 points per game.

He has a lot of size inside with Brad Perry (Maine South) and Zach Grady (Bolingbrook) and also has a post threat in Malik Fuller (Joliet Central) and dual threats Jason Malonga (Benet) and Evan Hines (Niles West).

Brandon Credit (Lockport), Harold Davis (JCA), James Dockery (Benet), Deantre

DeYoung (Plainfield South), Milan Grover (Maine East), Matt Mahlke (Downers North) and Devon Sams (Bolingbrook) are also on the team.

Scott’s team is led by the Plainfield duo of Elijah Goss of Plainfield East (IUPUI recruit) and Kevin Krieger of Plainfield North (Minnesota State).

He has plenty of scoring throughout his lineup as nearly his entire team averages double figures in scoring.

Northern area players include Patrick Hunt (Northridge Prep), Donovan Ferguson (Downers South), Kyle Domin (Westmont) and Jon Arenas and Tommy Digan (Maine South).

to land one of only two upsets in opening-round action of the NAIA II Men’s Basketball National Tournament late Thursday night when the Panthers stunned the Saints 87-79.

The loss ended USF’s bestever season in terms of winning

percentage (.875) and tied the school record for the most wins in a single season with 28 opposite just four setbacks.

“Why people love collegiate March basketball is because it’s the drama of one-and-done,” said USF head coach Ryan Marks. “It’s

not about being the best team over the course of a number of games. You have to be the best on that particular night and to York’s credit they were that team in this game.

Kirk said the team understands the depth on the roster.

“With our team, we just have to share the ball and take advantages of mismatches,” he said. “This means a lot to our team, to our family, to our city. This has been a long road, a hard road, but we fought and got the win.”

Where the win happened added something extra to it for West’s Elijah Ward.

Ward sat in the stands and watched his three older brothers, Ed, Karrington and Kyle, all play for the Porters under coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr., who is now an assistant with West.

“This was pretty big,” Ward said. “I sat here as a little kid and watched them. Now, it is a dream come true.”

“We are not done yet,” Bell said.

“We have been talking about this since the beginning of the season.

We have proved to everybody that we can be one of the best teams in the state. We are just taking full advantage of this, we could have come out in any of those games and thought it would be a cake walk because we beat them already, but we are coming out hard every game.”

If the Tigers defeated Benet, it would be the third state trophy for Joliet West this sports season, as the cheerleaders and girls bowlers both won state titles last month.

“There is a buzz and a positivity wave that we are riding,” DiForti said. “I think our athletes are learning how to win as opposed to not lose. This is the most successful Joliet West team in basketball since the split. JT had the run to the supersectional against O’Fallon and the Morris Dunnigan team played in a sectional semi. So, playing in a supersectional says a

initial ten-point lead (30-20 with 7:29 to play) and send both teams to the locker room tied at 42.

The even bigger swings came in the second half when York (24-9) rallied from a 59-49 deficit with 14:48 remaining in the contest.

The Panthers first went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 59-57 before eventually grabbing the lead back for the first time since early in the contest at 63-62 with

10:06 to play. Two ties ensued after that before York went on a clinching 11-2 run to pull away 81-72 with 110 seconds left.

Senior Jens Kennedy (Dwight, Ill./ Dwight) did all he could to try to offset 20 turnovers and both a 5-of-21 mark from three-point range (.238) and a 24-of-36 report (.667) from the foul line.

The Saints came into the contest averaging fewer than 14 turnovers

per game and ranked second in NAIA II in free throw percentage (.780). Kennedy finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

“As a coach, you always hope that your seniors play up to their capabilities as they inch closer to the end of their careers,” said Marks. “Jen’s has made such a transformation in his three years

with us and I am so proud of him.

“As for the turnovers and the free throw shooting, those were two areas that have been favorable for us over the course of the year.

In both halves, we got into foul trouble and that seemed to make us tentative and was part of the reason why we got out of synch.”

To reach the sectional final, West defeated cross-town rival Joliet Central 47-44 behind a huge fourth quarter from Casterberry.

Casterberry led Joliet West with 11 points, but it was a flurry of three plays in a few seconds that did not include a basket on his part that sparked West down the stretch.

After a missed Steelmen shot, Casterberry grabbed the rebound and threw a deep outlet to Trevian Kirk for a dunk at the other end. Still in his position under the Central basket, Casterberry held his ground and took a charge on the other end – giving possession back to West.

“That whole sequence, it would be dumb to say it changed the game, but it changed the game,” Joliet West coach Nick DiForti said.

“I think it took a little life out of Joliet Central. For some reason kids get a rise and get all excited about dunks, but I was more excited about the charge. But, when Trevian dunks, he is above the rim and it gets the crowd going and I think it may have rattled Central because it was at a crucial time in the game.”

Casterberry also preferred taking the charge over assisting on the dunk – but for a whole different reason than his coach.

“We have a goal for 20 charges,” Casterberry said. “The goal is for Chicken-N-Spice at the end of the year. So, the whole time I saw him coming, I was thinking, ‘just set up and I am getting Chicken-N-Spice,’ so that is what I did.”

Casterberry not only brings a love for chicken chunks to the Tigers, he brings a love for the game and his team.

“He is our emotional leader and he is our biggest cheerleader,” DiForti said. “That being said, he is the ultimate teammate. When he gets us going, our fans feed off it and our coaches feed off it. He leads us out onto the floor and he leads us on the floor and even from the bench.”

Despite West’s rally to regain a lead after blowing a nine-point halftime advantage, Central had a chance at the end.

Senior Malik Fuller drained a three-pointer from the corner with 42 seconds to play to pull Central to within one at 45-44.

After a pair of missed free throws from Teyvion Kirk, Central’s Jose Grubbs had the ball but it was batted away for a layup to seal the game.

“Our talk in the timeout was to just get the ball down the floor,”

said Central coach Jeff Corcoran.

“They ran two guys at Jose and he didn’t make the right read, but I would take my chances with him going to the basket with a head of steam.”

Kirk added 10 points for West, while Treveon Ward led Joliet Central with 14 and Grubbs added 12.

“These kids have fought from

beginning to end,” Corcoran said.

“These kids have fought from beginning to end. We have ups and downs, whether it has been injury or discipline or suspension and for these kids, its next man up. These guys know that we fight, no matter what year it is or what level and we have to live up to that. We may not have the height, but we have the heart.”

Dear Dave, Do I set aside six months worth of paychecks or the amount of my bills for six months when it’s time to save up my fully funded emergency fund?

Steve Dear Steve, In my plan, Baby Step 3 is when I advise people to save up three to six months of expenses in a fully loaded emergency fund.

This is set aside and not touched for any reason other than a true

Ultimately, we need a combination of approaches that involves faith groups, private contributions and government support. And it is crucial that people see their money being used effectively and not wasted. Illinois has a network of strong providers that it needs to make the most of, as part of a stable long-term budget solution.

It is time to recognize the incredibly difficult work that agencies are doing and have been doing in the name of helping others. Because these agencies adhere to strict state regulations for operation, they also survive on the money allotted to them in each year’s state budget. When the agencies are given an opportunity, they provide invaluable services that benefit the state fiscally and socially.

Titanic part II? At this point, it’s a fair question to ask whether Illinois’ fiscal situation is beyond repair.

Although unthinkable to many, the possibility of a state going through bankruptcy should not

emergency. It’s not a Bahamas fund or a new living room furniture fund. It’s an emergency fund. It’s not an investment or fun money; it’s insurance. Think of your emergency fund as a protective barrier that keeps you from going into debt or cashing out investments when life throws bad things your way.

How do you decide where to land in the three- to six-month range of expenses? That depends on how much risk your household has.

Politicians in Springfield have been well aware of an impending financial crisis for many years, which is perhaps now unfixable, or soon could be.

I am reminded of a friend who held a job where he began falling behind in his work. After a while, he realized that he could not catch up, but rather than telling his boss or limiting the number of new projects he took on, he actually began accepting more work.

He did so realizing that he would never complete any of it, but he figured that he would hold on as long as possible.

This strategy worked for a number of weeks as everyone thought that he must be doing a great job because he was taking on so much work. Before long, however, the ruse was uncovered and he was let go.

Is Illinois in a similar state of affairs, with our leaders pulling a ruse on us? Are we hearing warnings about an approaching iceberg when the party leaders are aware that we already hit the iceberg a long time ago? Is our fate sealed?

If that is in fact the case, then it will result in a terrible tragedy for many across Illinois, and

If there’s only one income in the equation, you have more risk, so you should skew things toward six months. Being self-employed or a commissioned salesperson is also a situation where this would be true.

If there are two incomes, and both come from steady, dependable sources, you could fall into the middle of that range or even more toward the three-month side.

Make sure your emergency fund is easily accessible too. A simple money market account with check-writing privileges works fine. You want to make sure you can get your money quickly when the need arises!
