City council recognizes young boxer Joseph “Jo Jo” Awinongya, 9, won the 8 to 9-year-old 80-pound division title at the 2017 Silver Gloves National

Joliet resident Joseph “Jo Jo” Awinongya, 9, knows what it takes to be a champion.

So, when an opportunity arose to put his city on the map, he said this is it.

Awinongya said it felt good being recognized by the Joliet City Council for his accomplishments.

“It makes me want to train harder for the Junior Olympics,”

he said.

Joliet officials presented Awinongya with a proclamation honoring him for his achievements at their March 7 meeting.

In February, Awinongya claimed the rights to the 8 to 9-year-old 80-pound division title at the 2017 Silver Gloves National in St. Louis.

Awinongya started boxing at age 5 and shortly thereafter started competing. Since that time, he’s had 16 amateur bouts and ranks No. 1 in the nation.

ya, Sr. said it brings great meaning to know his son’s accomplishments were being recognized.

“For me, I’m very, very honored today to come over here with my son,” he said. “One thing about him, he don’t fight like a little kid,” he said.

Joseph first settled in the City of Joliet in 2004, at which time he came with the intent to put an end to his professional boxing career.

“One thing that when I came to Joliet, I said… Joliet should be a boxing city,” he said.

Joseph recognizes the way gyms in Chicago train boxers, and said he decided that he wanted run a facility of his own.

“I know that when you want something, you have to go for it,” he said. “You have to push it.

Most of the time, I push my kids.”

“Most of the time when we go to other gyms, they ask me, ‘[why does] he fight better than me?’” he said. “I’m a professional. A lot of people say, ‘I’m a professional and he fight better than me.’”

One day, Joseph put plans in motion to open a boxing gym called Will County Boxing.

“From the beginning, I had all those kids [running] to the boxing gym,” he said.

Joseph said what many trainers don’t know is that they don’t foster growth within their boxers in the right way.

“It’s not something that can get you to the next level,” he said of other trainers. “[It’s about] boxing, training and doing good at school.”

Joseph said it’s not just his son that appears to be doing well, many of the kids reap the benefits of training at his gym.

“They can do whatever they want to do,” he said. “You just have to help them a little bit.”

Jo Jo is currently training for the 2017 Junior Olympic Youth Open and Prep National Championships, which will begin June 28 in West Virginia, with an endorsement and sponsorship provided by Hawk Chevrolet of Joliet.

HOSA students take 17 topten wins at State Leadership Conference Joliet West HOSA Club was the only Illinois chapter recognized by the state for their achievements working with NAMI On March 2 Joliet West High School’s HOSA Club took 17 topten wins at the 2017 State Leadership Conference in Decatur.

Seventeen students attended the conference after spending several months preparing for knowledge and skill tests, as well as presentation and leadership skills related to the health professions.

The Joliet West HOSA club is led by Mary Spata, RN, who said, “HOSA is a wonderful club in that it brings together a diverse mix of individuals all interested in the future of healthcare. Motivating and advising the student is an honor. I am excited to watch this group flourish in their leadership skills as well as in their competitions! This year our HOSA chapter partnered with our local

NAMI chapter to fight stigmas, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for equal care for mental illness. They also donated $1,000 to the local NAMI during a recent suicide awareness event at school.

Guadalupe Becerra was awarded the Barbara James Service Award for over 150 hours of community service since July 1, 2016.

City, county agree to open Chicago St. Agreement will benefit Joliet’s downtown redevelopment plans Officials from the Will County Executive, Will County Board and the City of Joliet have announced that after years of being closed between Washington and Jefferson streets, Chicago Street will open to the public as part of a larger property exchange between the county and city.

The agreement will benefit Joliet’s downtown redevelopment plans, the county, and the general public.

“Every downtown development plan the city has invested in indicates that reconnecting Chicago Street is key to revitalize downtown Joliet,” said Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk. “The city has talked

about this for years, but took no action to make it happen. I am thrilled that we have worked out this deal and can announce that reconnecting Chicago Street and building the city center square is no longer just an idea, it will be a reality. Thanks to our staff, councilman John Gerl, and our good friends at Will County for once again coming together to improve our great city.”

As part of the negotiations, Will County has agreed to trade property with Joliet that will allow Chicago Street to open between Washington and Jefferson streets.

Joliet will also receive Van Buren Plaza, where the former State’s

we were able to reach a deal that works for all the parties involved.

This should lead to forward progress on many fronts for our region.”

“Joliet has been growing rapidly in the past few years, and we’re glad we could work with Mayor O’Dekirk and Joliet officials to further their development efforts,” said Will County Board Speaker Jim Moustis (R-Frankfort). “The collaboration between the county and city government, and the resulting deal, will benefit both Joliet and Will County residents.”

In exchange for the Chicago Street and civic center properties, Joliet will transfer the former Metra parking lot, which is adjacent to the courthouse parking lot, to Will County. Officials have said the parking lot will be resurfaced, redesigned, and automated. The

makeover will increase the number of available parking spaces from 166 to more than 200. Parking in the lot will also be available to the public for events after 4p.m. for free.

The Redevelopment Plan for downtown Joliet was completed last year. Opening up Chicago Street will allow visitors attending the Rialto Theatre and other city events to drive directly into the corridor area where these events are hosted.

To aid in its redevelopment, Joliet recently received a Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) grant of $86,000 for the redesign and landscaping of Chicago Street.

The City also contributed an additional $40,000 to that planning grant for the design of the expanded plaza.

County chooses new transportation director Jeff Ronaldson replaces Bruce Gould,who retired after 40 years of county service At the February meeting of the Will County Board, longtime employee Jeff Ronaldson was named Director of Transportation, replacing Bruce Gould who retired after 40 years of service to the county.

Ronaldson has spent his entire career with the Will County Division of Transportation, joining the county upon graduation from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in June 1997.

Ronaldson worked directly under Gould for more than 19 years where he learned firsthand how to manage the county’s growing highway department.

“Jeff is an excellent choice to assume this position,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh.

“With nearly 20 years of on the job training, Jeff is well prepared to lead this department as we address our transportation needs now and into the future.”

Currently, the Division of Transportation is completing work on

Will Connects 2040 long range transportation plan which addresses all modes of transportation in the county including roads, all forms of public transportation, bicycle and pedestrian issues, aviation, and freight movement. Significant future projects include the future widening of I-55 and I-80, construction of the Houbolt Road Bridge, and numerous other county road improvements. The county is also actively working with public and private stakeholders to complete a Community Friendly Freight Mobility Study that has the primary goal of mitigating the negative impacts of increased truck traffic on regional roadways while balancing future development progress and quality of life issues.

“I have been privileged to work alongside Jeff on many projects throughout Will County,” said County Board Speaker Jim Moustis. “He not only brings the engineering expertise, he is first class

when working with the County Board and our residents.”

“Jeff is a very capable and knowledgeable engineer,” said Don Gould, chairman of the Public Works and Transportation Committee. “He has proven to be a resourceful professional to the township highway commissioners and local transportation officials.”

In January 2014, the highway department became the Will County Division of Transportation in accordance with Illinois state statutes. Bruce Gould, who had led the department for nine years as the County Engineer, then became the county’s first Director of Transportation. He said he is proud Ronaldson was chosen as his successor.

“I interviewed and hired Jeff right out of college,” Gould said.

“He has had a front row seat learning how to lead this department and create a vision for the future.”

Over the last 20 years, the county has increased its lane mileage from 567 to 620. And the amount of truck traffic has also increased exponentially during the last 10 years with the addition of two intermodal facilities. Record population growth within the county during this time has also increased the burden on country roadways.

“I have witnessed numerous changes during my career with Will County,” Ronaldson said. “It has been a challenge to ensure our roadways can keep up with this unprecedented growth. I am fortunate to have learned a lot from Bruce and former County

Engineer Sheldon Latz during my career.”

Gould said of all the county transportation plans over the past 40 years, the Build Will program is one of which he is most proud.

“Build Will is the most comprehensive transportation plan in our county’s history,” he said. “Weber Road and I-55 interchange will be the single, largest project the county has ever undertaken.

When it is completed, it will have a lasting impact on the landscape of transportation in Will County.”

“I am privileged to continue the work of Bruce and Sheldon as the next Transportation Director,” Ronaldson said. “Will County is anticipated to exceed 1 million people in the next 10 years and it will be a privilege to work with our county, state, and local agency partners to manage the needs of the County’s infrastructure.”

Readers ask for clarifications about Medicare Benefits are not a government handout - social Security is not a welfare program Over the past few months, these columns have raised plenty of questions about Medicare, present and future, and I’ve received many responses to those questions from readers.

Today’s column addresses some of readers’ concerns about Medicare, a complicated program.

Q: Why do you refer to Social Security as social insurance?

This continues to baffle me just as those who continually refer to SS as a handout. It’s not a handout. That money has been taken out of every one of my paychecks since I was 16. This is my money. TF A: Social insurance is group insurance. Workers pay premiums in exchange for insurance against the loss of wages as the result of disability death, or old age.

Because the government manages the insurance, and it is nearly universal, it has historically been labeled social insurance.

The writer is correct. Working and paying those insurance contributions entitles him to benefits. The benefits are not a government handout. Social Security is not a welfare program.

Q: I turn 65 this August and need to learn the basics to make informed choices. Is there a website or source you recommend that would give me the basics of Medicare? PH A: You can start with your local SHIP program, the government funded State Health Insurance Assistance Program https://www.shiptacenter.org/, which provides one-on-on counseling and answers questions.

Medicare Interactive https://www. medicareinteractive.org/, a website sponsored by the Medicare Rights Center, also is helpful as is Medicare’s official website, Medicare.gov.

Q: Both Social Security and Medicare are run under FICA, the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, and are not part of the national debt. The government needs to raise premiums for people earning higher incomes.

MR A: Social Security and Medicare’s hospital benefits are funded primarily through mandatory premiums known as insurance contributions.

Neither Social Security nor Medicare hospital insurance adds a penny to the nation’s deficit and debt.

One solution for potential Social Security shortfalls is to eliminate the cap on earnings on which Social Security contributions are assessed.

For this year the cap is $127,200.

Congress eliminated the cap for Medicare contributions in the early 1990s.

Q: The government has to stop using Medicare funds to pay hospital bills for illegal aliens.

They are not covered under Medicare, and the millions and billions of dollars should not be taken from Medicare funds. BC A: Medicare does not pay for healthcare for undocumented people. Community clinics may offer services.

Hospitals may treat them under their charity and uncompensated care programs, but usually try to collect those debts.

Q: Do you have any advice for individuals who will be switching over from Covered California (the state’s Obamacare marketplace) to Medicare in the next few months due to a disability? Are there any concerns someone would have before making the changeover?

LP A: Anyone age 65 and older and first signing up for Part B (which pays for doctors’ services and outpatient care) and in some states people with disabilities first signing up for Part B may be able to get a Medigap within the first six months of eligibility for Medicare.

After that it depends on your state’s rules. Check with your local SHIP program to learn what they are.

Q: I am very happy there’s going to be Medicaid reform. I am a dental hygienist who worked

in a practice that has seen has many Medicaid patients. Many of these people were illegal. Some couldn’t even speak English. I am on the door of seniorhood but LOVE the idea of Medicaid reform. We can save millions, probably billions, by putting people to work who can work.

CW A: The column you refer to discussed Medicare, not Medicaid.

The programs are not the same.

Medicaid was not designed as a seniors’ program, but 20 percent of Medicaid expenditures are for longterm care.

The lack of such care for families has meant that Medicaid, a welfare program, has become a long-term care program by default for many middle-income seniors.

Congress is considering cuts to both programs that could result in seniors paying a lot more out of pocket.

Q: My husband and I are hoping this administration doesn’t ruin this program by making it private. It has worked very well for a long time and should be left alone. If this program is made too expensive for seniors, the doctors will be seeing far fewer patients. BC A: It is well known that seniors are risk-averse, meaning they are afraid of big medical bills they can’t afford.

That explains the popularity of Medigap policies, especially the ones that cover the portion of a doctor’s bill that Medicare doesn’t pay, in effect giving seniors nearly full coverage.

Many in Congress want to change that. Beginning in 2020, insurers will be prohibited from selling those kinds of Medigap policies to people new to the program.

(Those who already have such a policy can keep it.)

The idea is to make seniors have more skin in the game by paying more for their care as a way to save money for the government.

Joliet West says good bye to one of top groups in school history

Joliet West coach Nick DiForti was his normal well composed self during his postgame interviews after a heartbreaking 78-66 loss to top-seed Bolingbrook, who used a 20-2 run to erase a 12 point Tiger lead and claim the Lincoln Way East Sectional title.

When asked about his senior class, however, DiForti was hit with emotion.

His eyes swelled and he paused to reflect on the impact the four players had on the West program.

“They are special,” he said.

“They have had so much pressure the last two years that a young man has never experienced. But, through the game of basketball, they have experienced so much pressure and handled it so well. Starting last year as juniors, the pressure that was put on these guys – it hasn’t been around Joliet in

some time. Not only pressure from Joliet - but pressure from outside venues - which allowed us to get really nice games.

“They have had all this pressure the last two years and have made a name for themselves and will go down as one of the best Joliet teams ever.”

The senior class was comprised of Trevian Bell and Teyvion Kirk, who played on varsity for West their entire sophomore year, along with Tabyous Casterberry and Elijah Ward, who were called up at the end of their sophomore season.

In the past two seasons, the seniors posted a record of 47-14, recording only the second backto-back 20 win seasons in Joliet West history and first two since the combined Joliet Township teams did so in 1993-94 and 1994-95.

The 26 wins this season are the most ever by a Joliet West team and this year’s Tigers are only SEE SENIORS PAGE 9

March Madness has a local flare

As the NCAA Tournament kicks off this week, a trio of local players and one head coach will be making appearances in the dance.

Southern Methodist is the No. 6 seed in the East Region and will play the winner of Providence and USC, who play in the First Four for the right to earn the No. 11 seed.

SMU features senior Ben Moore, a Bolingbrook graduate, who is fourth on the team in scoring with a 11.8 points per game average.

He is the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with 254 total boards, an 8.2 rebound per game average.

He is also the team’s leading shot blocker with 35 and is third in steals with 28.

Xavier is the No. 11 seed in the West Region and will face No.6 Maryland.

Benet’s Sean O’Mara is a junior on the Xavier team. He has played in 33 games this season, staring eight. He averages 5.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

A pair of former Dons will fight for the right to face off against No. 1 seed Kansas in the Midwest Region.

UC Davis, which features former Notre Dame standout Joe Mooney, is coached by ND alum Jim Les, brother of current Dons’ coach Tom Les. The Aggies won the Big West tournament to qualify for the tournament and will play NC Central in a First Four match-up for the No. 16 seed.

Mooney, a redshirt freshman, has played in 16 games this season and is averaging 2.3 points per game.

The tournament appearance is the first in UC Davis’ history and second in Les’ career as he took Bradley University to the Sweet 16 in 2006. Les has coached the Aggies since the 2011-12 season.

On the season, Jordan has appeared in 21 games, averaging 7.1 minutes per game and has scored 21 points on the season.

His season best was 11 points scored against McKendree.

Houston (21-10), with Joliet

West graduate Morris Dunnigan, will open with No. 7 Akron (26-8).

Dunnigan is in his first season with the Cougars after playing at Blinn Jr. College and is averaging 2.4 points per game.

Bolingbrook’s Prentiss Nixon helped Colorado State (23-11) earn a game against No. 5 College of Charleston (25-9).

Nixon, a sophomore, has started all 34 for the Rams and is third on the team in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game and is second on the team with 71 assists.

USF advances to Final Four To remain as one of the last four standing at the NAIA National Tournament after Saturday’s quarterfinal round, University of St. Francis knew it had to have a big final three to get there. The No. 1-ranked Saints did just that, playing a serious game of lockdown over the final three quarters to end No. 9-ranked Eastern Oregon’s 15-game winning streak and send the Saints to Monday’s semifinal round with a 51-48 defensive victory.

Monday’s opponent will be defending national champion and No. 4-ranked Marian (Ind.) (33-3), an 81-67 winner over No. 5 Southeastern, which entered as the only remaining unbeaten in the nation. Tipoff will be at 6 p.m.

Trailing 23-10 after the opening 10 minutes, the Saints (34-1) held a Mountaineer team that was averaging 75.2 points per game to just 25 points the rest of the way and no more than nine in any of the final three quarters. For the second straight day, USF also held its opponent to its second-lowest total of the season.

“Too awesome,” said USF head coach Samantha Quigley Smith about the defensive effort. “The point of emphasis at halftime was to stop (Ashley Knight) and just

Adding in Joliet Catholic, the 2017 Tigers are only the 14th team ever to win 25 games while representing the city of Joliet.

The West seniors are one of only three groups to ever win back-to-back regional titles and claimed one of only three Tiger sectional titles.

West lost to Bolingbrook this season, behind a game high 23 points from Bell and 12 from Kirk, a team poised to make a run at a state trophy and fell to state runner-up Benet a year ago.

The players also gained a lot more than just wins and school records.

“It has been a privilege playing with these guys. They are my brothers,” Kirk said. “The coaches are great. The fans, the security guards, the teachers, they have all been so great. The

“As we kept clawing back, we kept gaining confidence and when you score and you’re not trading baskets, the momentum starts to shift your way. When that happened, we had all the energy and enthusiasm and were diving for loose balls all over the floor.”

Davidson tallied five of her seven points in the final quarter and four of her five rebounds. No carom was any bigger than the one she fought for after a missed shot with 19 seconds remaining and the Saints clinging to a 5048 lead. Davidson finally tracked down the ball that seemed loose forever and eventually sank the second of two free throw attempts with seven seconds to play to provide the final three-point margin.

The victory, however, was not sealed until Maha Ah You’s three-pointer came up empty at the buzzer. Entering the game, Eastern Oregon (30-5) was the eighth-best three-point shooting team in the nation at 36.4 percent, but hit on only 2-of-19 shots from beyond the arc Saturday.

Nichole Davidson and the Saints did just that over the final three quarters. After allowing Eastern Oregon to shoot .625

from the field (10-of-16) in the opening quarter sparked by 10 of Knight’s game-high 21 points off the bench, USF allowed only 10 more field goals the rest of the way in 32 attempts for a stellar .278 mark. For the game, the Mountaineers finished at .385, while the Saints equally struggled at .345.

After cutting the 13-point first-quarter deficit down to eight at the break (31-23), the Saints made their biggest gains in the third quarter, using a 15-6 opening run to secure their first lead since the opening two minutes of the game.

Senior Charnelle Reed (Chicago Heights, Ill./ HomewoodFlossmoor) sparked the charge scoring eight of her team-high 16 points in the quarter, including her basket with 12 seconds remaining to put the Saints up for good, 40-39.

“Defense, defense, defense, that’s what Coach Sam emphasizes,” said Reed. “If we get stops, there’s no one that can keep up with us.”

Junior Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook) also had another big game for the Saints at both ends of the floor totaling 11 points and eight rebounds.

“I could ask for a better support system or better teammates, it has been a blessing,” he said. “I have a great relationship with my coaches, I love them and I love them.

“We have built such a great relationship in my three years on varsity – it is great.”

That growth over four years, on and off the court, is something DiForti is most proud of.

“I am so proud of these guys,” DiForti said. “They have matured as young men. I couldn’t be more proud of them. (The loss) is hard for them because of the passion they have for this game, but the maturation process in basketball is unbelievable. There are adults that don’t handle pressure like these kids do and that is through the simple game of basketball.”

The game of basketball will

continue for all four of the seniors will play next season.

Bell will continue his career at the University of WisconsinGreen Bay, while Kirk is weighing his options after decommitting from Drake early in the season when Ray Giacoletti resigned as coach.

He is being recruited by several Division-I schools, including St. Bonaventure, Boston College and Northern Illinois.

Kirk and Casterberry will first head to the junior college ranks, in hopes to follow in the footsteps of Morris Dunnigan, another West standout that went the JuCo direction and landed with D-I Houston this season.

“Our four seniors are playing basketball after high school and that is not something a lot of teams can say,” Bell said.

“There is an end to everything and unfortunately this was ours. They deserved it and we deserved it. We have to look past it eventually – we can’t dwell on it.”

Avoid aches and pains when gardening With spring around the corner, practice these tips People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health.

But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent greenthumbers indoors.

Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden.

USE ERGONOMIC GARDENING TOOLS Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gar-

dening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

ALTERNATE TASKS Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens.

By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty.

Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break.

TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches

that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions.

Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt.

MAINTAIN GOOD POSTURE Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens.

When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries.

Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture.

Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist.

Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.
