A Joliet art gallery is facing eviction from its current location after nearly 9 years on North Chicago Street in the Rialto Square Complex. Gallery Seven, at 116 N. Chicago Street, recently received notification from the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the owners and operators of the Rialto Square Complex, to vacate the property by Dec. 11.

“It was kind of a shock,” Gallery Seven President Richard Ainsworth said. “We’re not looking back.”

The gallery intends to find a new home to operate out of in or around the Joliet area.

“I think the motivating factor is they paid no rent,” Rialto Square Theatre executive Director Valerie Devine said. “We had a company tell us we could receive pay for a space on Chicago Street.”

Devine did not refute the idea of the Rialto reversing its decision

to evict the gallery but gave no indication the board would seek to reestablish its agreement with Gallery Seven.

Ainsworth acknowledged that Rialto officials inquired of rent as early as August and said the gallery had received no indication they would need to vacate the premises if the two continued with its rentfree agreement.

“They’ve been a host and a sponsor,” he said. “They enabled us to serve as a center for visual arts.”

In 2016, Rialto officials voted to bring on VenuWorks as its management company. Since that time, members of the board have resigned to give Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk the authority to appoint new people to serve. Later, they chose another company to oversee the buildings.

had a good working relationship with the Rialto prior to the new board’s arrival. The Rialto is seeking approximately $10,000 to occupy the space, he said.

Since Gallery Seven set up shop in 2008, its partners have invested time and money to maintain the space. The site in question had previously been vacant for nearly 30 years.

“Community galleries, they’re subsidized by local government or some are paid for by endowments or they have a rent-free situation,” Ainsworth said. “I don’t think community galleries could make a profit. The goal is to promote local artists.”

Devine said the Rialto has a possible interested party for the space and acknowledged there are many factors to consider when weighing what tenant to bring in and at what price.

“Maybe they do have interested parties,” Ainsworth said.

The gallery currently utilizes approximately 11,000 square feet and is run by volunteers.

“We’re hopeful we’ll find a host and sponsor,” Ainsworth said. “We contacted our consignment artists.

They’re picking up their materials.

We hope to find another location in Joliet or a nearby community.

Joliet Rotary salutes Big Brothers Big Sisters Joliet Rotarians honored Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Will of Grundy Counties on October 15 during a special event held for mentors (Bigs) and mentees (Littles). This year Rotary International’s theme is “Rotary: Making a Difference.” That is exactly what Joliet Rotarians commit to accomplish. To achieve the theme of making a difference, Rotary Club

of Joliet has established a new tradition to salute an organization and celebrate their hard work and dedication to the community. Rotarians work together to plan an event or party that can be enjoyed by the individuals the organization serves and their employees.

The first event, honoring BBBS, was held at Dollinger Farm. During the event, Bigs, Littles, and BBBS staff had the run of the farm, which included train rides, a corn maze, animals from Big Wolf Ranch, pumpkins, food, music and more.

“The Rotary Club of Joliet is

Will County Sheriff seeking help in identifying suspicious invidividual Will County Sheriff’s detectives are seeking help from the public in identifying a suspect in a suspicious incident. On Oct. 23, around 10:40 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 400 block of Laurel Drive in Naperville, Wheatland Township, in reference to an activated home burglar alarm.

The suspect and his vehicle were captured on the homeowner’s video surveillance system. The suspect was also seen in the video taking an Amazon package from an Amazon driver. The suspect previewed the package but upon leaving the scene left the package near the front door. The home alarm was activated shortly after the suspect was seen going toward the back door of the home. The vehicle is possibly a black Camry with a spoiler.

For this family, pro-life viewpoint became a question of life & death Wouldn’t it be grand if people were more compassionate in other instances?

BY MARY SANCHEZ TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY A young mother of five, a survivor of recent cancer surgery, develops a new tumor - and discovers she is pregnant.

The cancer is aggressive; to survive she needs chemotherapy, but that would buy only a few years more of life, if that. And it will kill the baby she is carrying.

What should she do?

What Carrie DeKlyen and her husband, a Michigan couple who faced this dilemma, decided has been the topic of much public commentary, most of it empathetic but some of it shallow and cruel.

Carrie DeKlyen chose not to undergo chemo, and she is now dead. Her child, named Life Lynn DeKlyen, was born just shy of 25 weeks after conception and died two weeks after her mother on September 20. A baby is considered full term around 39 weeks.

Despite exemplary efforts by doctors, and being tagged as a “miracle baby” by media nationwide, Life didn’t have very good odds.

She weighed only 1 pound, 4 ounces at birth. In early September, Baby Life was delivered by C-section as her mother lay unconscious from a stroke brought on by her inoperable brain tumor. Carrie, 37 years old, left five other children, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years old.

Social media couldn’t hold back.

What launched was almost a parlor game of “What would you do?”

Was Life’s mother selfish to deny her other five children their mother? Or

was she a saint for giving her baby a chance at life?

How about she was a mother facing a horrible decision that you wouldn’t wish upon anyone? That’s fair.

Today, social media and internet discussion threads allow everybody to be a moral philosopher, although many don’t feel the obligation to be fair or empathetic or particularly rigorous.

The DeKlyens made their difficult choice in a manner consistent with their view that life starts at conception. Abortion was never an option.

This view was obviously informed by the couple’s faith, and even their choice of name - “Life” - suggests perhaps a statement of principle, a political stand.

After the baby’s death, some remarked that the story would no longer resonate as a shining example of the pro-life ethos. The cringeworthy rationale was that the family no longer had the child to hold up as an emblem of the cause.

Wrong. Carrie DeKlyen is still a great example of a woman choosing life for her child. Others argued that the family’s faith was misplaced; God didn’t save the baby.

Yes, the family made religiously guided decisions. The widowed father has been consistently quoted with the family’s view that God wanted them to choose the baby’s life over that of the mother.

“We’re pro-life,” Nick DeKlyen told the Detroit Free Press. “Under no circumstance do we believe you should take a child’s life. (Carrie) sacrificed her life for the child.”

After the baby’s birth, Nick DeKlyen also made the decision that his wife had suffered enough and asked that her feeding tube and breathing machine be disconnected. She died soon after. Others with a more stringent views about what constitutes life

might have argued against that decision.

The fact that the family sold sweatshirts to raise money and used an internet crowdfunding site led to some tut-tutting that the family was taking pecuniary advantage of their plight.

However, despite the sanctimony of some internet commentators, most who contemplated the family’s tragedy were sympathetic. People saw the mother as someone of faith and related. Or they viewed her as a mother, or as half of a loving marriage, or as a cancer patient, and related.

Wouldn’t it be grand if people were more compassionate in other instances as well? Yes, people questioned the decision to keep the baby. But what you didn’t hear was the sort of condemnation that befalls other women who, like her, have a lot of children, mounting hospital bills and a husband who isn’t able to provide.

Nick DeKlyen is out of work. He’d reportedly quit work during all of this distress to be available to his family, also completely understandable.

People read these kinds of stories with different needs and agendas.

Some want miracles. Some want hope.

And, in their lesser moments, some want to validate their beliefs on such matters as abortion, the proper place of faith in public policy and the right way to have a family.

But if we read and hear these stories, putting aside our ego-driven need to be right, we recognize simply what they are: incredibly difficult decisions that families ultimately have to make alone, using their own understanding of what is right. And it’s not for any of us to pass judgment.

Minooka holds off late Notre Dame push and wins playof opener in overtime

Just when it looked like a Jake Loebbaka interception would seal the deal for Minooka in the opening round of the IHSA Class 8A playoffs — something crazy happened — and no one in either set of stands were surprised.

In a game that saw more oddities than either team had experienced all season — Minooka escaped with a 22-19 overtime win over Niles Notre Dame to advance to the second round.

After Loebbaka’s pick, Minooka failed to convert a first down and an errant snap on the punt resulted in a Notre Dame fumble recovery.

With no timeouts and the help of some Minooka penalties, the Dons scored with 7.1 seconds left in regulation when Luke Schutt found Ray Neylon from 4-yards out to cut the Indian lead to 16-14.

West falls to No. 1 Lincoln-Way East

Joliet West saw its 2017 season come to an end Friday night with a 44-0 loss on the road against top-ranked Lincoln Way East, in the opening round of the IHSA State Playoffs.

Though the Tigers came into the contest as significant underdogs, Joliet West more than held their own for the first quarter and a half.

In a defensive stalemate, it wasn’t until the six minute mark of the second quarter that the Griffins were able to break the scoreless deadlock.

However, once the Griffins broke through, Lincoln Way East would go on to score 44 unanswered points, in a showing worthy of the state’s top overall ranking.

“Obviously the first quarter and a half we did some good things and made them earn everything they were getting,”

Joliet West coach Jason Aubry said. “We felt like we matched up well with what they did offensively. But they completed some passes, moved the chains, and eventually they just wore us down. That’s what good teams do.”

Joliet West ended the 2017 season with an even record of five wins and fives losses, with another early exit in the playoffs.

Though inconsistent at times and disappointed with another first round loss, the Tigers will look back at this season as one of great success.

Aubry was pleased with what Joliet West was able to achieve this year, he knows that the time has come for the Tigers to take the next step.

“We had a great season and made the playoffs, but I think we are over just being happy with making the playoffs,” Aubry said. “I think it’s time for us to start winning in the playoffs, that should be our goal. We’ve

made the playoffs three of the last four years, so to really start having real success we need to start winning. Our program got to this point, now let’s take it to the next level.”

The Tigers have been a program on the rise in recent seasons and are now starting to demand the attention of teams around the state. But just like every team in Illinois, Joliet West will have to overcome the loss of some key senior contributors.

Seniors that have given everything to the program and earned a special place in Aubry’s heart.

“I just think of Arthur Hart, Jonathan Pullen, Alex Schott and Keenan Linder, who are all four year players,” he said.

“That’s what we’ve come to know, players who play all four years and give their heart and soul to the program. That’s what I love the most about this group of Seniors.”

Despite losing key players and veteran leadership, the Tigers will be able to count on a host of players with their own wealth of experience to step right in and take control of the Joliet West program.

“We knew it was there,” he said. “The center kept his head

down and I knew I could get right through it. That was the turning point for us. They are a good team and they found a way to come back and both teams fought adversity.”

Minooka would take a 16-8 lead when Emani Johnson scored from three yards out and thought it was sealed away on Loebbaka’s late interception.

“So many things happened in this ballgame,” said Minooka coach Terry McCombs. “You saw an inadveretenet whistle, two safeties, overtime - you name it, it happened.

“Our defense has been great

all year and I can’t say enough about them.”

The Defense held Gavin, Notre Dame’s junior who averaged nearly 130 yards per game during the regular season to 47 yards on 18 carries.

For Notre Dame - coach Mike Hennessey knows that posting a 7-2 record in the East Suburban Catholic Conference this season is nothing to take lightly.

“It was a great season for the kids. To go 7-2 in our conference is a helluva accomplishment.

Our coaching staff did a great job all season getting us prepared for everything.

“That is what the state playoffs are all about. They are a good team and a class operation. We played some pretty good football and this was a tough game to accept. It is tough to accept some of those plays and things that happened, but we have a great group of kids and they are walking out of here with their heads high. We didn’t get the score we needed in the overtime.

You need to get a touchdown there - a field goal is never going to be enough.”

I’ll make about $10,000 this year as a trainer, and $25,000 to $30,000 working events as a DJ. I’ve almost got all my debts paid off, and I love both of my side jobs. I was wondering how to tell when I’m ready to leave my day job and concentrate on personal training and my DJ work.

I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job. I want the boat pulled as close to the dock as you can get it, so that when you make the jump from the dock to the boat you don’t hit the water.

In your case, I would want the $10,000 you earn from personal training to look more like $20,000.

When you reach that level, combined with what you’re making as a DJ, it would create a pretty safe

$25,000 for $10,000 and only hoping the personal training gig will grow. That’s not a good idea. I’d like to see that hope proven a little bit more before you walk away from a day job.

College and Career Fair Nov. 7 The 2017 College and Career Fair will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at East Campus.

Throughout the event, representatives from more than 70 colleges and 50 career fields will be available to meet with students and parents.

College and career representatives will be available from 6 - 8 p.m. in the East Campus gymnasium and café.

The financial planning seminar begins at 7:30 p.m. in the East Campus Auditorium with guest speaker Frank Palmasani.

The program will provide information pertaining to college financial literacy, affordable college options and ways to manage college cost without excessive debt.

Students in all grades and their families are welcome to attend.

Sign up for Petite Porters Preschool Lockport Township High School is now accepting applications for the Petite Porters Preschool.

The purpose of the program is to provide LTHS students enrolled in the childcare and guidance course a practical, hands-on experience that will enable them to develop and teach age-appropriate, enriching activities to youngsters aged three to five years of age.

Petite Porters Preschool will be housed at East Campus, 1333 E. 7th St., Lockport. Sessions will run from 9:25-10:10am every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from Nov. 6 – Dec. 14, and reopen from Feb. 6- May 4.

The $150 fee will help off-set supply, and activity costs. Because the program is limited to 12 preschoolers, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Participating children must be toilet trained.

Upon acceptance into Petite Porter Preschool, an informational meeting for parents will be held. Parents will view the room and hear about the curriculum.

“Types of early child care programs and career opportunities will be explored. In order to work successfully with young children, you need to understand them,” teacher Regan Cronholm explained. “Using this information, students will plan developmentally appropriate activities to be used in a preschool setting, and teaching techniques will be developed through practical applications.”

New, revised courses at LTHS for 2018-19

For the 2018/19 school year, Lockport Township High School will be offering three new courses as well as revised curriculum in select English and Social Studies courses.

New course offerings include Honors Health as well as Officiating and Coaching in the Physical Education Department and Dual Credit Personal Finance in the Social Studies Department.

The Honors Health course will allow students the option to participate in an accelerated health course and the Officiating and Coaching may result in youth and/or IHSA officiating certification and possible employment with local athletic organizations.

Dual Credit Personal Finance will offer an expansion of the Financial Literacy component of economics.

Revised curriculum in Reading 1 and Reading 2 has been approved, to change its primary emphasis on reading in English to one that will support reading in all content areas.

Select World Studies courses were also revised. World Studies Honors is now Advanced Placement Human Geography to provide increased rigor for the freshman level curriculum and allow for a seamless sequence of courses.

World Studies is now Adventures in Global History to implement a chronological approach to the study of World History by focusing on themes that are germane to the development of a global understanding.

Girls Lacrosse comes to LTHS for spring For the first time in Lockport Township High School History, a girls lacrosse team has been added to the LTHS Athletic Program and will play in the spring season along with the boys’ team.

LTHS Athletic Director Jim Prunty hosted a meeting for interested parents and students and about 30 girls were in attendance.

Informal discussions have been going on for the past several months and momentum for starting lacrosse for girls had been building.

Boys lacrosse was added at LTHS six years ago and has grown to two levels of competition.

This year, LTHS will offer a junior varsity level and the goal is to have varsity and junior varsity levels for girls lacrosse in the 2018-19 school year.

In addition, the Illinois High School Association has created a state series in boys and girls lacrosse, which will begin in the spring.

To begin, the LTHS girls lacrosse team will compete as an independent (not a member of a conference).

The LTHS boys lacrosse team will play in the newly formed Southland Lacrosse League, which will be comprised of schools who are members of the Southwest Suburban Conference and the Southwest Prairie Conference plus Lemont.

The schedule for the girls will be created by scheduling some of these schools as well as other schools who field a girls lacrosse team.
