HUGS takes to the ‘Streets of Paris’ 8th annual Chocolate Ball fundraiser helps fulfill local wishes

For one evening, approximately 450 people dined and danced the night away as though they took to the streets of Paris. The ornate celebration modeled after the iconic imagery was Shorewood HUGS’ eighth annual Chocolat Ball Saturday, Feb. 4 at Clarion Hotel Joliet in Joliet. The main highlights for the evening included a silent auction, dancing and a raffle.

Shorewood HUGS board member and past president Molly Babyak said the annual fundraiser is designed to please.

“Every year, we have a new theme,” she said. “This year is the ‘Streets of Paris.’ It’s based on chocolate. This year, we have 12

chocolate stations... For the first time ever, we’re having a painter at the event. She will be painting side table while the event is going.”

Money raised throughout the annual event helps Shorewood HUGS to fulfill wishes.

“Since 2010, we have fulfilled approximately 530 wishes,” Babyak said. “Those are made possible thanks to the Chocolate Ball.”

Shorewood HUGS typically grants wishes in the amount of $500 to those in need, disabled or those deserving of some assistance within a 20-mile radius of Shorewood.

Babyak said past wishes have included anything from groceries and gift cards to a swing set and a weekend getaway.

“We have a Wishes Committee,”

she said. “We do as much as we can to grant wishes.”

Pat Marcum, of Joliet, was named one of this year’s Shorewood HUGS wish recipients on behalf of her family. She said it means a lot knowing they were selected, and is relieved to know her husband, Glen’s, community involvement will not be forgotten.

Glen Marcum died on November 1, 2016, at which time he was battling pancreatic cancer.

Around that time, he served as board president to the Joliet Park Board of Commissioners.

“He really was about doing for everybody else,” Marcum said.

“It’s very humbling to be recognized. We were facing a lot of travel back and forth, which is why our friends did this. They helped cover the costs of things that weren’t covered by insurance.”

Marcum said she never imagined they’d become recipients of a

Shorewood HUGS wish.

“You always think there’s somebody else who should’ve got it more than you—you look at those pictures, you look at those people,” she said. “It’s like, ‘we were blessed that people thought so much of him to do this for him’…

More so than even the monetary gift, (it’s wonderful seeing) the recognition of what he’s meant to so many people in the community.”

Marcum said her children appear to be coping well with the loss.

“We had time to say our goodbyes,” she said. “He had time to talk to every one of them. He talked to each one of them about something different he wanted them to do and do for me. We were lucky in that respect that nothing was left unsaid. Everybody doesn’t get that.”

Babyak said it helps that people

in the community recognize the work of Shorewood HUGS. “It does show that our organization helps the family,” she said. “It helps our supporters to know we really are helping people. It helps our supporters to know their support is being put in the right place.”

But that’s not always the case when people give back to larger organizations, Babyak said.

“When you a write a check to a large organization, you don’t always know where the money goes,” she said. “We’re affecting your neighbor, your co-worker and people who are in need.”

The co-chairs for this year’s fundraiser included Susan Underwood, Jackie O’Hara and Heidi Serena.

U. of St. Francis supports DACA students 2 percent of USF campus community is comprised of DACA students

Many will remember the rhetoric used by now President Donald Trump on the campaign trail.

Though some praised his way with words and his plan to build a wall along the Mexican border, others questioned his leadership ability.

In the wake of Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, both supporters and opponents can agree that immigration reform is looming.

The University of St. Francis is one higher education institution

set to support students who had Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals under the new federal administration. University of St. Francis Director of Freshman Admissions Eric Ruiz said though it’s best to stay out of politics, the institution intends to remain committed to its values.

“We’ve always taken the stance whoever our president is we’re going to take care of our students however we can,” he said. “Whether it was the old or the new president, the university supports students and that includes anybody wishing or wanting to get a college

degree.”

Ruiz does training to educate university officials and others on how to support students who had DACA, and is currently working on a training seminar to achieve this aim. “Little by little, we’re trying to make them more aware,” he said.

“We are supportive.”

Ruiz said it’s unclear to what extent Trump may value the contributions of people who had DACA. “I don’t know, people say certain things,” he said. “According to the job, people may say and do different things. We’ve seen that with other presidents. That’s why we’ve taken the stance that we’re going to stick to our values.”

The University of St. Francis is a privately funded institution in

which two percent of the campus community is comprised of DACA students. Total undergraduate, graduate and doctoral enrollment at the institution is set at 3,902 for the 2016-17 academic year.

“DACA will help us to determine what options we have to support them,” Ruiz said. “We would need to counsel them to make sure they’re guided in the right direction.”

Ruiz said though DACA helps individuals in obtaining more options, the university can only help students in reaching their potential to a point. To serve as a fully functional educational institution, the effort to support students who had DACA stops at the 75th percentile, at which point one seeks employ-

ment, he said.

The university does not receive any funding through DACA. But there are other forms of aid provided by the university, Ruiz said.

“Our scholarships can go to anybody based on merit,” he said. “It has nothing to do with status… The reason we like the DACA program is because they can graduate and have that under their belt. If the accounting student has DACA, they can work… Having DACA means that you’re able to work. That helps us to help them go to college. You can go to school and get the job. If they don’t have DACA, they can get the degree, the diploma, (but) that’s where it stops. We’re not able to help them find that career.”

JJC president looks to lead by example President Dr. Judy Mitchell gives inaugural speech

In her inauguration speech, Joliet Junior College President Dr. Judy Mitchell noted the journey she’d taken to get where she is today.

“There are so many wonderful people that I have met and known over 20 years and recently in the community,” she said. “You have to know that I truly bleed purple and love Joliet Junior College.”

A number of community leaders were on hand for the Feb. 1 presidential inauguration ceremony at Joliet Junior College.

Mitchell gave credit to the institution for helping to shape the professional she is.

“This institution from the start took good care of me as a returning adult student,” she said. “At that point, I hadn’t been in a classroom for over 10 years, let alone a college classroom. When I walk the halls of our campus today and spend time with our students—in those same classrooms, remodeled—my collective thoughts are this, ‘what can I do each and everyday to give back to the institution that gave so much to me?”

Mitchell was appointed to her current position in September 2016, following the departure of Dr. Debra Daniels, who served as the college’s president for four years.

Mitchell said she strongly believes in JJC’s mission to be a student’s first choice and views it as a guiding principle for which she follows.

“What I do every single day through my interactions, through my decisions and through my relationships, guide JJC to be the first choice for education, for training, for careers and so much more,” she said. “It is imperative that we have a strong foundation to lead us into the future. We have a proud history at this institution as the first public community college in the nation. It is through this lens of un-parallel innovation in our history of revolutionizing local

higher education that I consider the future of Joliet Junior College.”

Mitchell said it’s key that people recognize what she calls JJC’s four pillars to support success, and they include efforts to ensure fiscal responsibility, provide diversity in academic programming, create paths for student success and focus on community and legislative engagement and philanthropic outreach.

JJC President Emeritus J.D. Ross spoke on Mitchell’s behalf commending her effort, saying she serves as a testament to working professionals looking to advance their careers and “shatter the glass ceiling” one building block at a time.

“Your appointment to the presidency speaks highly of your academic preparation and of your job performance in prior positions,” he said. “And let’s be honest, in good organizations internal candidates do not get these appointments without support from the faculty, staff and students, as well as external support, which comes from the community and business leaders. Dr. Mitchell, you had that

support, you still have that support and it bodes well for you and your team.”

JJC Alumni Board Interim President Ericka Williams agreed.

“Dr. Mitchell is living proof that access to quality education provides immeasurable opportunities,” she said.

Mitchell earned an associate degree from Joliet Junior College in 1998. Following that, she would go on to earn her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate.

Prior to serving as the college’s president, Mitchell worked as an administrative assistant in the computer informational system department, program manager specialist in adult and family services, assistant to the director of administrative services, just to name a few.

“Throughout those roles, Dr. Mitchell has positively impacted Joliet Junior College in many ways,” Williams said. “For instance, she led the college budgeting process in the state of Illinois fiscal crisis and helped the college reduce its operating costs by over $2 million over four years.”

Under Mitchell’s leadership, the college’s financial team was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fiscal year 2016 budget.

Dr. Mitchell was also part of the team guiding the college’s development of a 2008-2013 master plan, a plan that encompassed the largest physical change to the college main campus since it was built in 1969. Five new structures and five expansion and renovation projects altered the appearance of the college and provided the space and resources needed as enrollment grew and programs changed to meet labor market demands.

“Educated workers drive employment and economic growth,” Mitchell said. “The college’s partnership with companies to develop curriculum necessary to pro-

duce skilled workers for these jobs is imperative.”

Mitchell said she’s proud to serve as JJC’s president.

“I believe together we will build a foundation for a very strong future, one which supports student success and will provide the necessary workforce in our community,” she said. “At JJC, we often talk about being sustainable.

Of course, this includes so much more than supporting the sustainability of our environment. It includes sustaining the health of our economy… and our society, too. It is my hope to lead the college into the next chapter advocating for student success, growing access to education for all, cultivating innovation, fostering opportunity and impacting our communities and you in long-lasting meaningful ways.”

Turn laundry piles into smiles

Everyone wears clothes, so the whole family should do their share

Do mountains of dirty laundry make your winter days turn gloomy no matter the weather? Does your dog think those piles of unwashed sheets and towels are his personal bed? No matter how big or small your laundry piles are, here are some tips to help you quickly turn those piles into smiles.

KEEP SUPPLIES NEARBY Pre-wash treatment, detergent, fabric softener, bleach, etc. should be within easy reach. Store them on a shelf over the washer, in a bin on top of the dryer, in a nearby cabinet, or on a storage cart next to the washer or dryer. Consider having a spot for empty hangers, a hanging rod, a drying rack (I use one that attaches to the wall) and a wastebasket (for tossing dryer lint).

GET THE FAMILY TO HELP Have a hamper in each bedroom, and possibly each bathroom, to make it convenient for family members to deposit their dirty clothes. Consider using a lidless hamper, since opening a lid is an extra step that may prevent dirty clothes from getting where they belong.

Make family members responsible for emptying pockets and turning socks right-side out. Your family can also help empty the dryer (even a 5 year-old can

DEVELOP A LAUNDRY ROUTINE One option is to do a load every day or so, as needed. You might choose Monday for whites, Tuesday for bedding, etc. You might want to wash a load overnight and then toss the clothes into the dryer first thing in the morning while you’re getting dressed. You might prefer to do it in one marathon session, devoting a day to doing all the laundry.

No matter what your preference, just be sure you have a laundry routine that you can maintain.

USE LABELED BINS FOR SORTING You can use separate laundry baskets for each category, hang separate laundry bags on hooks, or purchase a laundry sorter that has a number of separate compartments. Label the containers with the appropriate categories, such as whites, darks, towels, delicates etc. Another option is to sort loads according to family member. Either way, family members should be responsible for making sure that their dirty clothes hamper gets emptied into the proper sorting bin by laundry day.

PUT CLEAN CLOTHES PUT AWAY The job of laundry isn’t finished until the clothes are put away. Everyone should be responsible for putting away their own clothes within a predetermined amount of time, e.g., once a week. When clothes have an assigned place to go (e.g., undies in this drawer, pajamas in that drawer, t-shirts on a shelf in closet), putting them away should go fairly quickly.

When everyone who wears clothes in your household pitches in, you can have a simple routine for getting laundry done and clothes put away on a regular basis.

USE A SEPARATE “CLEAN CLOTHES” LAUNDRY BASKET FOR EACH HOUSEHOLD MEMBER Label the baskets and place folded clean clothes into the appropriate baskets as you empty the dryer. Items that aren’t affected by wrinkling (socks, undies) can be placed into a single basket for other family members to sort. Everyone can help fold towels as well.

All-star game give area cagers chance to shine Voyager Media hosts All-Star game March 19 at USF In 2008 the Plainfield Enterprise hosted its first preps All-Star Basketball game for area high school seniors. That game featured only Plainfield schools, the coverage area of The Enterprise.

“Prior to 2009, there were three of the four Plainfield high schools,” said Sports Editor Mark Gregory.

When The Enterprise became part of Voyager Media Publications, the coverage area eventually expanded to 15 communities in four counties. Be-

tween The Enterprise, The Sentinel and The Bugle newspapers, the game features some of the best senior athletes from Joliet Central, Joliet West, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Westmont, Niles West, Maine East, Notre Dame, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Minooka, Joliet Catholic Academy, Benet Academy, Maine South, Lockport, Lisle and Northridge Prep.

“After the purchase by Voyager Media we went more north, getting Bolingbrook and Romeoville players involved...then we slowly added Downers Grove high schools then the Niles area schools.”

Voyager Media eventually had to move the event to University of St. Francis in Joliet to accommodate the growing crowd.

“The move to USF really made for a more legit All-Star game,” said Gregory.

“Holding it in a college setting, in a larger venue than a high school gym, really makes the All-Star games something special,” said Pat Ryan, advertising director.

With the move to USF community continued to grow as well, 2016 drew a crowd size of around 500.

“The community has been great,” said Gregory. “Especially in Joliet, where basketball is king.”

“The players respective communities really come out to support their seniors,” said Ryan.

Residence site of apparent murder-suicide Couple lived on north Bluff Street home in Joliet

The parents of two young men recently charged for murder were found dead after an apparent murder-suicide on Feb. 5.

Angel Morgan, 43, and Patrick Morgan, 49, were pronounced dead just after 4 a.m. in their north

Bluff Street home in Joliet.

“We received a call at 12:48 p.m. from a family member, and they said they went to the apartment building and noticed they were dead,” said Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner. “That person called the police department and officers arrived.”

Law enforcement authorities believe the couple was killed in a murder-suicide.

Police officers reportedly found

the woman shot twice, a male subject shot once and a handgun at the crime scene. Police believe Patrick was responsible for what occurred early Sunday.

Roechner said it’s unclear who owned the weapon. “(Patrick) does own a handgun,” he said. “We’re trying to figure that out.”

Roechner said there was no one else at the residence except for the couple.

“It does appear to be a murdersuicide,” he said. “No one is at risk.”

Though the investigation continues, an autopsy report was conducted early Sunday.

“I do know there was a history of domestic disputes,” Roechner said. “But, they were back together at this point.”

The two are the parents of Amari and Blaique Morgan, who both face felony charges stemming

uninsured motor vehicle.

Marcus Davis, 38, of Chicago, was cited for speeding and no valid driver’s license on S. Chicago Street near I80.

Jorge Viramontes, 36, of Joliet, was cited near Collins and E. Cass streets for improper lane usage, no registration lights, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and driver’s license was never issued.

Shawn A. Silakowski, 39, of Joliet, was cited near Collins Street and Elwood Avenue for no valid driver’s license.

January 14 Francisco J. Hernandez, 28, of Joliet, was cited near E. Jackson Street and Youngs Avenue for driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and no child safety seats.

Dion A. Sanders, 21, of Country Club Hills, was cited near S. Briggs Street and 4th Avenue for driving while license suspended.

Victor Castaneta, 24, of Joliet was cited near S. Briggs Street and 5th Avenue for no valid driver’s license.

January 15 Gregory R. Thompson, 36, of Joliet, was cited near S. Briggs Street and New Lenox Road for driving while license suspended.

Person(s) unknown broke two stained glass windows and damaged a door of a church on the 500 block of Ontario Street.

Offender(s) also entered a house that was on the property and broke out eight windows, two interior doors, and put multiple holes in the drywall.

January 16 Anthony D. Anderson, 40, of Romeoville, was cited near S. Weber Road and W. Division Street for failure to signal, driving while license suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

SHOREWOOD January 14 Daniel S. Dillon, 24, of Braidwood, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, improper turn.

January 18 Erica L Harris, 33, of Joliet, was arrested after officers respond-

Will County court records show that Patrick filed for and received orders of protection against Angel in 2002 and 2016, while Angel was denied a motion to place an order of protection against Patrick in 2009. The final cause and manner of the Joliet couple’s deaths is pending police, autopsy and toxicology reports, Roechner said.

Porters dominate regional

The Lockport Township wrestling team may have been a favorite entering the IHSA Class 4A Regional, but not many would have predicted the Porters to dominate the way they did.

Lockport racked up 275.5 points, beating No. 2 Providence Catholic (177.0) by nearly 100 points.

“This was pretty good,” Lockport coach Jake Oster said.

“This is something we are capable of. We wrestled pretty good, but not perfect. The kids were prepared and came out and wrestled hard. Everyone did their job. Providence is good and they wrestled us hard, but everyone took care of their job and got it done.”

Lockport boasted eight regional champions and three runners up in the tournament.

Leading the charge for the Porters was senior Payton Fernandes, who was the No. 4 seed and won the 182-pound weight class with three consecutive pins.

In the final, he pinned AJ Lighthall of Neuqua Valley in 1 minute, 12 seconds.

“I always have full confidence and I don’t expect to lose any match,” he said.

Fernandes was pinned by Lighthall earlier in the season.

“I was sick that day and wasn’t feeling that great,” Fernandes said. “I wanted to get some revenge. There was a lot of argument about me being the fourth seed because we didn’t expect that.”

“I just want to keep peaking until state finals when it is all over,” Baylor Fernandes said.

Lockport senior Abdullah Assaf continued his run toward a state title with a 6-4 win over Gannon Hughes of Oswego at 132.

“I like to be challenged, I like

the final match because he came at me,” Assaf said. “I also like that in a close match I am giving four points and I am getting the take downs that I need. Next time I will change some things up and the score won’t be the same.

“I like to dominate kids. I like to break them – I want to domi-

nate. As mean as it sounds, I like when a kid walks off the mat with his head down or he wants to stop wrestling me because I am in his face all six minutes, or all eight, however long it takes.

No matter if I am up 12-0 or down 8-0, I am in your face and right there with you. If you have any other attitude, this is not the

sport for you.”

Minooka, Lockport win bowling regionals

The Minooka Indians took care of business in the afternoon of their own regional to win the title Saturday at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.

A 1,088 in the fourth game put them in first place and they never looked back, finishing with a total of 6,000, topping Andrew, which shot a 5,884.

“It is relieving,” Kristina Sickler said. “We’ve struggled a little bit all season and it was pretty nice to know that we actually won.”

“It was the first time for us bowling a 6,000 this season, so that was a big breaker for us,” Carmella Russell said.

Russell added a 1,218 and Sam Isenmonger shot a 1,114 for the Indians.

The Indians will now be looking to return to state for the second straight year Saturday at Orland Bowl as Andrew will be hosting the sectional. The top four teams and five individuals will advance to state.

“We need to keep rolling good shots and pick up spares. We missed a little too many spares today,” Russell said. “If we can do that, we will be able to advance.

Me and Kristina have been bowling with each other since sixth grade, so we know how to pick each other up.”

“We have to get better as we go,” Sickler said. “As long as we

are there for each other, I think we will be fine.”

Joliet Central’s Tara Tindall and Sarina Lukas are also headed to the sectional at Orland Bowl, finishing with scores of 995 and 947, respectively.

•Also bowling at Town and Country Lanes were those in the Plainfield South Regional.

That tournament was dominated by Lockport, the top ranked team in the state, which shot a 6,381.

The Porters were led by Monica Colon and Marissa Ramirez, who shot 1,329 and 1,324, respectively, to place second and third individually.

Local teams ready to make IHSA playoff run

The IHSA playoffs for girls Class 3A and 4A basketball is right around the corner and the Voyager Media teams are ready.

Most of the Voyager Media schools all feed into the East Aurora Sectional complex this season, coming out of four regionals, three of them hosted by local schools.

Benet Academy holds the No. 1 seed in the sectional and hosts its own regional.

The Redwings open play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 against the winner of No. 16 Neuqua Valley and No. 17 East Aurora.

“Benet is pleased to receive the No. 1 seed in Aurora East Sectional,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride. “As in years past, we feel that our strength of schedule has us well prepared for the state tourney. We know that we have a very tough road ahead with quality opponents in the early rounds but hope to enjoy the ride and see how far we can get.”

The regional championship game on Feb. 16 could have another local team as No. 8 Plainfield North takes on No. 9 Lemont at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

“We are looking forward to having a good regional round,” said Plainfield North coach Reggie Lemon. “This is the best seeding in Plainfield North girls basketball so we need to take advantage of it. Our goal is to get

back to the regional championship game from two years ago.”

In the Oswego Regional, Minooka holds the No. 3 seed in the sectional and will open play Wed. Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. against the winner of No. 14 Metea Valley and No. 18 Oswego.

The No. 6 seed in the complex is Bolingbrook, who will play at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 against the winner of No. 11 Joliet West and No. 22 Waubonsie Valley.

The regional final is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

The Plainfield East Regional opens with a play-in game between No. 15 Romeoville and No. 19 Plainfield Central.

That game will tip off at 7 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 13.

The winner of that game will play at 6 p.m. Feb. 14 against sectional No. 2 seed Oswego East.

The other semifinal game will feature a pair of area teams, as No. 7 Plainfield East and No. 10 Lockport.

“We have had a goal all year to win the school’s first girls basketball regional title,” said Plainfield East coach Tony Waznonis.

“When we saw the sectional postings we knew that would be tough, but anything worthwhile is not an easy path. Being the 7 seed is not where we wanted to be, but we know no matter what seed we received, we would have to earn a regional title against a great team.”

The regional final is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

In the Joliet Central Regional,

the No. 20 Steelmen open play at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 against No. 13 West Aurora with the winner playing No. 4 Yorkville, while No. 21 Plainfield South plays the 7:30 p.m. game against No. 12 Naperville North with No. 5 Naperville Central lying in wait.

“We ended up getting the 21 seed in our sectional which we expected due to our record,” said Plainfield South Lincoln DePaula coach. “Although our record does not show it, we have shown that we can be a tough out when we play consistently on the defensive end and take care of the basketball on offense. We have stressed to our players that anything can happen in the playoffs.

Even though we haven’t had the season we wanted to have, our players are excited for a chance to prove themselves.”

The regional final will tip at 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

Up north, Niles West hosts a sectional complex that features a trio of Voyager Media teams.

In the Maine West Regional, No. 15 Maine East opens play against No. 19 Von Steuben at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

The winner of that game would face No. 3 Maine West.

The other semifinal pits No. 11 Niles West against No. 5 New Trier.

Tigers finish second at state finals

BLOOMINTON — Coming off a state championship season, the Joliet West cheerleading team returned to the state finals again last weekend.

Hoping to continue their run of being undefeated in competitions this season, the Tigers turned in another outstanding performance. But it wasn’t quite enough to get a repeat as they finished second to LincolnWay East in the large school division of the Illinois High School Association Competitive Cheerleading State Finals on Saturday, Feb. 4 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

“That was our best performance of the year and we couldn’t ask for more,” Joliet West coach Amy DiForti said of her squad on the final day.

“These girls work so hard and I’m extremely proud of them.”

There were certainly no regrets for the Tigers as they simply ran into a better team in the finals.

After not qualifying for state last season, Lincoln-Way East captured first place, for its third state title in four years, in the large school division by nearly two full points.

The Griffins scored a 94.46 on the final day of competition.

That’s the fifth largest score ever in the 12-year history of the event being an IHSA sport. The Griffins hold the record for best score with a 97.06 when they won their first state title in 2014.

While a repeat of last seasons state championship winning score (94.70) could have netted another title, Joliet West was very happy to be in the position of being right there.

“We had a fantastic season,”

Taylor Styrczula said. “We were undefeated in all our competitions and to be back on the podium was a blessing. From the beginning day of practice we worked so hard and without our coaches we couldn’t do it.”

Fellow senior Lydia Schrock agreed.

“It was just such an amazing feeling to be here on the podium again,” Schrock said. “We did amazing and left it all on the mat. I couldn’t be more proud of how we performed.”

The Tigers had captured the

Normal West Sectional title on Saturday, Jan. 28 with a score of 90.97. They followed that up with the best score (90.89) in the preliminary round on Friday, Feb. 3 at state. There’s 25 teams that qualify for state and the top 10 teams from the preliminary round make it to the final day.

Those preliminary scores, however, don’t carry over to the placing on the final day.

It was the fourth time in six seasons that Joliet West made the top 10 at state. The others were a seventh place finish in 2012, a

fourth place finish in 2014, and of course the state championship a year ago.

“It was very exciting and a great year,” DiForti said of placing second. “We’ve been fortunate, but the girls worked hard all season.”

In the coed team category, Plainfield South (83.19) made it to the final day and placed ninth.

The Cougars had made state in the large school division in 2013, but this was the first time they had a cheer team perform on the final day at state.

“Every shot we throw we have to keep focusing hard and that will lead us through sectionals to

the state tournament,” Ramirez said.

Joliet West added a pair of individuals to the mix as Karlee Barton shot a 1,242 and Alexis Robbins had a 1,187.

“It definitely feels different going as an individual rather than a team,” Barton said. “You don’t

have your teammates or the huge crowd of parents behind you cheering. I will have my partner with me though and as long as we keep our heads up and stay strong, we will have a good day.

I’m really proud of us because we started the season rough and we really came together.”

Debit, credit cards same thing to machines Machines don’t recognize the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number DEAR DAVE, I take classes online at a public university that is several hours from my home. I tried to pay for my classes the other day, and my Visa debit card was not accepted.

I got a message saying credit cards and cash were the only payment options. How can I take care of this without wasting an entire day driving to campus to pay with cash?

AMY DEAR AMY, Don’t worry, there’s no need for you to drive all the way to campus and back just to pay for your classes. You can run a debit card like it’s a credit card, and they will accept it. The machines don’t recognize the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number.

Just select “credit” when it asks for payment method. It’s just like when you step up to pay for some-

thing at the store and they ask the old credit or debit question. You say credit, so you don’t have to enter your PIN (personal identification number), and it all stays in the Visa system.

You’re just using it wrong, and that’s why you’re having trouble.

Just remember this in the future, and best of luck with your classes!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My husband and I have been debt-free, except for our mortgage, for a few years now. Recently, we’ve been thinking about moving back to our home state to be closer to family. We’ve found a home we’re interested in, but it has a large utility tower on the property not far from the house. Should we still consider this home?

DENISE DEAR DENISE, The downsides are simple. One,

you’ve got to look at the stupid thing every time you’re sitting on your patio. Two, when you get ready to sell it, everyone who looks at the house is going to have the same concerns you have. It’s not going to appreciate in value, and you’re going to have trouble selling it when the time comes.

If you’re willing to put up with those two things, you might get a steal of a deal on this place because no one else may want this house. And when I say a steal, I’m talking around 40 percent off the appraisal. To me personally, it would be enough of an eyesore that I probably wouldn’t buy.

Again, that’s just a personal opinion.

Keep in mind that if you go through with this, when you get ready to sell it you’re going to lose out on any money you gained in the buy. Someone is going to do the same thing to you. I’m not completely killing the deal, but I definitely wouldn’t buy it to live in.

As a rental? Maybe, if I were going to keep it forever. Because people will always rent. But honestly, I

wouldn’t want to put up with the hassle in either scenario.

IMEA encourages prep for earthquakes There are several steps people can take to help prevent injuries and property damage at home In recognition of the earthquake risk in southern Illinois from the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies will promote earthquake preparedness throughout February.

“While we don’t experience major earthquakes with the same frequency as the western United States, some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the continental U.S. happened along the New Madrid seismic zone

about 200 years ago,” said IEMA Director James K. Joseph. “We can’t predict when the next major earthquake will occur, but we can help people learn how to stay safe and reduce damage to their homes.”

In conjunction with Earthquake Preparedness Month in Illinois, IEMA is adding a new 30-second TV spot to the Ready Illinois broadcast preparedness campaign, which is aired in cooperation with the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Public Education Partnership (PEP) program. The new spot directs people to the Ready Illinois website for information on how to prepare their homes for an earthquake. It will air on IBA member TV stations serving residents of southern Illinois, where the greatest risk of earthquakes in Illinois exists. The spot is also available on the Ready Illinois website at www.

Ready.Illinois.gov.

Joseph noted that the actual movement of the ground in an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most casualties result from falling objects and debris caused by the earth shaking.

Learning how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” can help people prevent injury during an earthquake. The phrase reminds people to drop down to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture, and hold on to that object and be prepared to move with it until the shaking ends.

There are several steps people can take to help prevent injuries and property damage at home, such as anchoring bookshelves, overhead light fixtures, and large appliances, learning how to shut off gas, water, and electricity and placing heavy objects on lower shelves.

BBB: Time to protect against tax scams Most common scam reported to Scam Tracker are scams that involve a phone call People say that bad things happen in threes. Tax scams are no different. As W-2 tax forms land in mailboxes and forms are being completed, there are a few things to be aware of when it comes to tax season. Better Business Bureau wants to warn you of these scam tactics: IRS impostor scams. The most common scam reported to the BBB Scam Tracker are scams that involve a phone call or other communication of someone pretending to be the IRS and claiming you owe taxes. Scammers will attempt to convince

victims they will be arrested if they do not pay the fees over the phone. Scammers are sophisticated enough to obtain personal information adding credence to the threat. Payment will usually be asked to be paid by wiring money, pre-paid debit or gift cards or by credit card.

Tax relief scams. Tax returns are complicated. Many people seek professionals’ help to be confident their return is being filed correctly and to maximize deductions. Beware of deceptive advertising claiming to significantly reduce tax liability or to increase the amount for a return. Savvy scammers will use official-looking IRS notices and create credible-looking websites to sway victims into paying unnecessary money or divulging personal information.
