West to hold main entrance grand opening Feb. 22 Joliet West High School invites parents, students, alumni and community to a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Ceremony celebrating the school’s newly constructed Main Entrance located off Larkin Avenue.

The event is from 5 to 6 p.m. on February 22 and includes brief remarks and light refreshments. Student involvement includes the Posting of Colors provided by JROTC, singing of the National Anthem by the Choir, and background music provided by the JTHS Orchestra.

Joliet West High School broke ground on the new 3,52 square-foot addition during the 2016-2017 school year. The one story addition was designed to create a welcoming environment while increasing safety and security. The Main Entrance includes a vestibule, waiting area, metal detector and bag check area, two conference rooms, and a Police Liaison Office.

Annual African American Read-In is Feb. 22 at Central Joliet Township High School District 204, The National Hook-Up Of Black Women and the Joliet Public Library are proud to present the 4th Annual African American Read-In on February 22. The event will be held from 6 to

8 p.m. in the Joliet Central High School Student Center, 201 E. Jefferson Street in Joliet.

This event is free and members of the public are invited to participate by reading short passages of work by African American authors. Participants can bring work they would like to read or they may choose from selections available at the event. Separate programming will be available for Elementary School students and includes arts, crafts, activities, and interactive story time. A soulfood dinner from Gwen Ulmer catering will be available for $5.

Central’s Fearless Females Z Club learns entrepreneurship Joliet Central High School Fearless Females Z Club, the junior chapter of the Zonta Club of Joliet, learned about entrepreneurship during an educational visit to Persona Grata in Shorewood. Salon owner and Zonta member Terri Taylor organized the event, where students gained knowledge of massage therapy, skin and hair care, along with the essentials of business development. Salon employees, including fellow Joliet Zontian Jeanne Paluga spoke about their career journeys and experience.

Inaugural film festival coming to Bicentennial Organizers seeking entries in music, animation, documentary, comedy, drama or phone-based film

Like the cities of Naperville and Chicago, Joliet is set to become home to a film festival in April.

The J-Town Film Fest makes its debut April 29 at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park & Theatre.

“Naperville has had one for 10 years, and Chicago has theirs,” said Lori Carmine, park manager for Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park & Theatre. “We’re the third largest city [in Illinois]. We should have one.”

Carmine said the idea behind hosting the festival began long ago and is closer to being realized.

During the summer months, Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park commonly runs a camp for community youth to get involved in.

Around that time last year, they put on a production of “Singing in the Rain“ involving video. That’s when Sheila White, of Joliet Community Television, said Joliet could be a good place to host a film festival.

White was providing assistance to the theatre at the time, Carmine said.

Organizers started discussing the idea of hosting the festival in the fall of 2017.

Carmine said they have such great talent in Joliet, and all they need is a place to showcase their work.

“We’d love to see this grow with showings at the museum, at the colleges, and ending up at the Rialto [Square Theatre,]” Carmine said.

Carmine wants anyone interested in music, animation, documentary, comedy, drama or phone-based film productions to get involved.

“The only requirements are they’re all short-form, phonebased films are 10 minutes or under, and the others must be under 20 minutes,” Carmine said. “We want to start small. We also want to keep it at a PG-13 rating.”

Organizers are anticipating showcasing the best pieces of each

category and letting the audience choose a fan favorite.

“I think that ours will get homegrown talent, though we’re open to anybody,” Carmine said. “Joliet is so diverse, you get a variety. You’ll have people from high-school age to adults [participating in the film festival.] The diverse factor is the biggest asset, and we have several categories.”

To help make the film festival possible, organizers have been in talks with the film teachers at Joliet Junior College. The radio station at University of St. Francis reached out to the organizers with interest in providing promotion.

Organizers are in need of additional committee members and volunteers, and they encourage anyone interested to get in touch.

The film festival is scheduled for 2 p.m. April 29 at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park & Theatre.

Families bond at Math Family Game Night

With freezing temperatures outside, Troy Cronin School kept families from the cold with Math Family Game Night on Feb. 1.

The school held the annual event throughout the building with dice and card games, board games and Bingo.

Math Family Game Night is meant to build community within the school, provide an opportunity for some leadership, instill a love of math and help people to recognize that math is more than solving problems with pencil and paper.

“There’s so many pieces to math,” Howard said. “It involves games, dice, thinking and all those kind of things,” Howard said.

1,000 years ago, Illinois had largest city in what would be U.S.

BY SUSAN SARKAUSKAS AND DIANE DUNGEY OF THE DAILY HERALD Centuries ago Illinois was home to the largest and most influential city in what would become the United States, rivaling the size of European cities at the time.

As many as 20,000 people — double that if surrounding communities are included — lived about 1,0000 years ago in the elaborate planned city that now lies within the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Cahokia, east of St. Louis, includes woodhenges — large sun calendars that were built of red cedar posts — and at least 120 mounds and pyramids used to support important buildings and for burials.

Yet, Cahokia is only part of Illinois’ rich American Indian heritage.

Although 101,451 Illinoisans identify themselves as being fully or partly of American Indian descent, the tribes themselves are gone from Illinois, mostly moved west by the federal government in the 1800s, said Bill Iseminger, assistant manager of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. What’s left are the remains of native cemeteries, villages, cities and mounds, onetime Indian routes that became the basis for many of our modern roads and highways and the names of many things, beginning with our state itself, named for a powerful American Indian group that once called Illinois home.

1,000 YEARS AGO, A CULTURAL CENTER Many different groups occupied Illinois in the centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot on North America.

Archaeologists estimate people came here about 12,000 years ago after migration from Asia over a land bridge began to populate the continent, according to the Illinois State Museum. Over thousands of years, people adapted to a changing climate and became less nomadic as the Ice Age came to a close.

Cahokia was built during the Mississippian Age, which began around 900 A.D. and lasted about 550 years. The city was the political and religious center of Mississippian life, but eventually its influence faded. It was largely abandoned by 1350 A.D., though no one knows precisely why.

Wood, game and other food sources might have been depleted, Iseminger said. There is evidence of long droughts and the climate was cooling.

Where did they go? Probably in many directions, joining other communities or establishing new ones, Iseminger said.

The Osage, Ponca, Omaha and Quapaw people are believed to be descended from the city’s builders.

About 700 years ago, as Cahokia was fading, a people called the Oneota emerged in the Illinois River valley. Excavations in Fulton County show half of those buried in an Oneota cemetery died as a result of violence, though it’s not known why, according to the Illinois State Museum.

Were the two cultures at war? It’s hard to say, though there’s evidence of Oneota culture in the Cahokia area. And Cahokia had a large palisade enclosure, indicating a need for defense, Iseminger said.

“The Oneota, as they migrated south, may have been the final blow of the Mississippian culture,” he said.

STARVED ROCK TO BLACK HAWK By the time French traders and priests arrived in the 1600s, there were two main American Indian groups in the area: the Illiniwek, or Illinois, and the Miami. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Illiniwek territory shrank, the Miamis moved eastward, and other tribes moved in.

As Europeans and other outsiders arrived, the Indians traded with them. They allied with the French and the British, at different times. American Indian federations and tribes fought each other, with the Iroquois being notorious for battles against the Illiniwek.

Starved Rock State Park near Utica is named for a stone formation where, legend has it, members of the Illiniwek starved to death in 1769 during a siege by the Ottawa and Potawatomi, who sought to avenge the killing of the Ottawa chief, Pontiac.

By 1818, a War Department study estimated there were at least 10,860 native people living in this area, not counting the Peoria band of Miami Indians. Tribes had already ceded a strip of land at the mouth of the Chicago River to the U.S. government, as well as land near Kaskaskia.

In 1821, the tribes gave up more of northern Illinois.

In 1832, some members of the Sac and Fox nations agreed with a chief named Black Hawk that their land had been illegally taken from them. They tried moving back into northwestern Illinois and western Wisconsin, leading to the unsuccessful Black Hawk War. The 1833 Treaty of Chicago took care of the largest swath. In exchange for handing over 5 million acres, tribes including the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Odawa, Sac and Fox agreed to move west of the Mississippi River, according to an 1918 article about the treaty in the Wisconsin Magazine of History. Many would eventually be pushed farther, which is why the Peoria Tribe of Miami Indians is now headquartered in Oklahoma.

TRIBAL HERITAGE When the French and other Europeans arrived, they learned the tribes’ languages and began naming places and landmarks using the natives’ words. French or English versions of the names stuck.

The settlers also might have been influenced by the Romantic movement of the late 1700s and early 1800s, which placed a high value on nature and folk legends, so the names might have been meant to memorialize the dwindling numbers of natives and their cultures.

Poet Walt Whitman extolled the practice, in “An American Primer:” “All aboriginal names sound good. I was asking for something savage and luxuriant, and behold, here are the aboriginal names. I see how they are being preserved. They are honest words, — they give the true length, breadth, depth.

They all fit. Mississippi! — the word winds with chutes — it rolls a stream three thousand miles long. Ohio, Connecticut, Ottawa, Monongahela, all fit.”

There are six counties in Illinois that have Indian-themed names, at least 60 towns, and scores of schools and other places, from Aptakisic Road in Lake County to the town of Wetaug in Union County.

Many other roads now have more prosaic names but trace the paths American Indians once used, from the east-west U.S. Route 6, which generally follows the onetime Sauk Trail, to the North Shore’s Green Bay Road, thought to have been a Potawatomi trail.

“It’s a good opportunity for him,” she said. “It’s fun for us. To me, it’s all meant for us to spend time with him in the school. It’s important to be part of the school.”

Stacey said David loves math.

“He picked it up on his own,” she said, negating the idea that her interest in the subject inspired her son’s love of math.

The event was neither a first for Stacey, nor her son.

“The turnout is always pretty good for the events,” Stacey said.

The games were fun for many of those on hand, though not always easy.

Consider Quirkle, during which Stacey and her son hoped to mix, match, score and win.

“I don’t know how to win, to be honest,” Stacey said.

Still, Stacey said they were enjoying their evening.

From Candyland and Trouble to Chutes and Ladders and Hi Ho Cherry O, there was a plethora of board games for families to play in the cafeteria.

There, an estimation jar full of Legos was also set up for people to try their hand at guessing how many items are inside.

Meanwhile, in the iLab, families had an opportunity to enjoy math

“Every year, we change it up a little bit,” Principal Jill Howard said, referring to the activities. “This year, we added technology, which is new.”

Howard said with this addition to the event, they are focused on how to build technology into literacy and numeracy.

“I don’t think that we, at Troy [Cronin,] see technology as its own entity,” she said. “We see it as a part of teaching and learning in all of the other areas.”

In addition to Math Family Game Night, Troy Cronin School hosts a literacy night every year for families to enjoy. There, administrators and staff pride themselves on providing opportunities to engage the community both inside and outside the classroom setting.

“Those are the two core areas everyone needs to walk away from being strong when they’re leaving the elementary setting,” Howard said. “We focus very heavily on how do we support literacy in school, numeracy in school, and then both of those things outside of school, as well.”

“It’s pretty fun, actually, being around people, friends playing games,” he said. “It’s like being at home.”

Earlier in the evening, Tony and his son had visited in the art room to find that it was set up for people to try their hand at origami. “[Vincent] made a Samurai hat,” Tony said. “It’s pretty challenging.”

Tony said Vincent and his 9-yearold daughter, Xierra, are really good at math, which is puzzling to him.

“I don’t know where they get it from,” he said.

Vincent said he gets it from himself.

Tony had never previously attended Math Family Game Night at the school. “[I’d come back,] especially since all the board games are really fun,” Tony said.

Elsewhere, in the preschool hall, families tried their hand at games involving sorting, matching, shapes, patterns and counting.

The event came to a close with a few rounds of Bingo in the cafeteria.

Prizes were awarded to winners of each game of Bingo, and a box of Legos was offered to the individual who tried their hand at guessing how many items filled the estimation jar.

State Champs - Again Joliet West wins second cheerleading title in three years

All season long the Joliet West competitive cheer team had one mission: To win another state championship.

The Tigers accomplished that with a record performance last weekend. They capped a special season, which included a phenomenal postseason push, and won the large school state title by over four points on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington. It was their second state championship in the past three seasons and last year they were second.

The final standings were: Joliet West (94.44), Marist (90.13), and Stevenson (89.43) were the top three. The 4.31 point difference between first and second, was the largest margin of victory ever for a championship in the large school class.

Sandburg (88.72) edged Huntley (88.49) for fourth. Jacobs (86.04) was sixth, defending large school champion Lincoln-Way East (85.51) placed seventh, while Prospect (85.31), Neuqua Valley (85.20), and Edwardsville (84.93) rounded out the top 10.

With a large crowd cheering them on, the Tigers had a nearly flawless performance that had most everyone in the crowded arena clapping with approval.

The Joliet West cheerleading team won the large school state title for the second time in three seasons.

They were the second of the large school teams to compete, and after they were done there was a feeling that they were the champions. When defending champion Lincoln-Way East had a major mistake in the middle of its performance, that pretty much sealed the deal.

“These girls were just driven and

had extremely high goals since the beginning of the year,” Joliet West coach Amy DiForti said. “No one was going to stop them from it.”

When Joliet West won its first title in 2016, it actually had a little better score of 94.70. But after falling to a total of 92.71 in the loss to Lincoln-Way East (94.46) last year, the Tigers toughened up their

routine.

“Just the culture of the program, it’s very strong,” DiForti said of what makes the difference. “[Assistant coach] Becky [Stortz] try new things and we focus on the mental side of things. We believe that success breeds success and the kids are used to that pressure.

“It’s an amazing accomplish-

ment, but it’s a lot of hard work.

They are the hardest working kids in the school.”

A dominate victory, a comeback and an emotional last qualifying battle were the highlights this past Saturday at the girls regional bowling hosted at Channahon Lanes. This regional was one of three regional sites that feed in to next week’s sectionals at Illinois Valley Super Bowl in Peru, IL. Minooka dominated the team battle from the very first game and cruised to an easy regional title. The Indians bowled a six game total of 6, 145.

Also winning individual honors was Minooka junior Kristina Sickler who rolled a 1,389 sixgame series. The Indians also had three other bowlers place in the top 11 as freshman Kiara Backstrom was sixth (1,235), freshman Jenna Newton 10th (1,216) and junior Gina Russell 11th (1,206).

“This means a lot to win the team title,” Sickler said. “The individual title is great as long as we bowl well as a team, that is what comes first. We did this as a group, a team and we are all best friends. We have such a young team and Gina [Russell] and I are the old veterans as juniors. We always work together and pick each other up as a group. It was special to win at this house, this is our place now.”

“Each week we continue to get better and that is what you

want at this time of the season,” Minooka coach Frank Yudzentis said. “Especially with such a young team, they have really bought into the process of getting better each week. Kristina and Gina have really taken the leadership role of this team seriously and have matured as leaders.

“Today, we just went out and bowled our game, picked up spares, which is so important because that is where your scoring comes from.”

The comeback came from the Tigers of Joliet West. They dug themselves an early hole and had to fight all the way back. After being in 8th place after the first game, the Tigers finally made it into a qualifying spot after game five and bowled their best game in the finale to take the runnerup spot. Their afternoon three games were only nine pins off Minooka.

“It was nerves at the beginning,” Tiger coach Jeff Bailey said.

“It was an emotional day and we used everyone on the team.

We would have four very good games, but just couldn’t find that fifth. But everyone came together, stepped up when needed.

This was a total team effort.”

Camryn Feehan finished second overall with a score of 1,313, with Alexis Robbins finishing 16th and Barbara Lunsford finished 18th.

The battle for the final qualifying spot was back and forth

during the entire sixth game between Plainfield Central and Lincoln-Way East.

The Wildcats started the day well and was in second place after two games but couldn’t find the rhythm until that final game.

East started the final game down to the Wildcats by 65 pins, but they quickly made that up and even had a lead of about forty pins heading to the final four frames of the sixth game. But in those final frames, Central got the ball rolling and quickly, not only made up the ground, but pushed the lead to the final 40 pin cushion to secure the final sectional qualifying spot.

“I only have one thing to say about this team,” an emotional Central coach Connie McGrath said. “They stayed together and I’m so, so proud of them. They did this together as a team and that is what got them through the day.”

Freshman Ari Guarino lead the Wildcats with a 1,246 to finish in fifth place. Megan Allensworth placed 15th, with Chloe Cavanaugh in 17th and Aly Bilak in 19th.

Joliet Central finished their team season with an eighth place finish, with junior Tara Tindall finishing in 21st place and qualifying as an individual for sectionals.

Plainfield South was 10th with freshman Laura Rohlfs leading the Cougars with a 29th place finish.

Slammers looking for host families The Joliet Slammers presented

by ATI Physical Therapy are seeking local families, couples, and individuals willing to open their homes to host a Slammers player or players during the 2018 season.

The host family program is vital to the success of the team and offers players a home away from home during the season by matching them with local families.

Participants in the host family program receive many great benefits including: two reserved

“Words can’t express it,” said Todd, who was on the varsity all four years. “We enjoyed every moment. We wanted to be there for each other and the team. We didn’t hold back. We went ‘all in.’

That was our motto this year.

Combs, a 3-year varsity veteran, agreed.

“We just had to start focusing on ourselves,” she said. “It’s just super exciting. The coaches pushed us to do our best and win it.”

The rest of the members of the team were: Alyssa Anderson, Kennedy Aubry, Kelsey Bishop, Maddie Blenck, Sara Dinardo, Cheyenne Eads, Mikayla Garcia, Katie Gibson, Taylor Latta, Arielle Lindsey, Lindsey McCrea, Nya Mitchell, Jazmin Morales, Haley Nurczyk and Tia Roland. Savana Delrose is the team manager.

Joliet West is now in select company as one of only four schools to win multiple titles in the large division, joining Lincoln-Way East, Lockport, and Sandburg.

The Tigers won the Limestone Sectional on Saturday, Jan. 27 with a state-high score of 93.47. They also had the top preliminary score at state on Friday, Feb. 2 with a 92.93 mark.

For the Lockport Township cheer team it was anything but business as usual this season. The Porters transformed themselves from a conventional large school team to a coed one. The result was a perfect record as they captured the title of each competition along the way, Although that winning streak ended in the State Finals last

weekend, it was still an outstanding cheer campaign for the Porters. In their initial season in the coed division, they took home third place.

The final standings were: Belvidere North (93.97), Grant (91.60), and Lockport (89.91) were the top three. Plainfield South (86.36) was fourth, followed by Metea Valley (86.23), Guilford (85.03), Buffalo Grove (84.97), South Elgin (80.66), Glenbard East (80.59), and Shepard (80.34).

“We’re definitely happy,” Lockport coach Jenny Krumlinde said. “Our first time in the coed division here, with all the seasoned teams. Coed is a growing and very hard division, so we are happy with a trophy.

“For our seniors to get to walk across that podium [in the awards] was really special.”

The seniors are:Ariana Chudzik, Grace Crosby, Kenzie Fischer, Regan Reposh, Hannah Rimkus, Sydney Scherp, and Kara Skevis.

Two of the seniors, Reposh and Rimkus, were both 4-year varsity performers. This was their second time bringing home a trophy as they were both on the Porters second place large school division team in the 2014-2015 season. As one might expect, they were emotional afterward.

“We owe everything to coach Jenny,” Rimkus said of Krumlinde “For the last four years I’ve been so blessed to work with her. That was a once in a lifetime experience.

“Just knowing that [the state final] was my last hurrah, I wanted to go out on a high note and we did. We had to finish strong and it made me proud to be a part of

Lockport. We had such a good team this season and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

Reposh agreed.

“I’m just proud to be on the podium,” Reposh said. “It was a good season. We made a few mistakes [in the final on Saturday], but we had to keep it up and keep going. I’ll just remember all the friends I’ve made and coach Jenny too. She’s such a good coach and taught us so much, cheer wise and life wise.”

A majority of the team is juniors. Mackenzie Everett, Morgan Fahey, Jocelyn Gaydos, Rachael Howard, Brooke Johnston, Jacob Martinez, Grace Motisi, Hannah Park, Aubree Peters, Nina Piazza, and Libby Walton make up the junior class.

Alaina Alberico, Cassandra Rasp, Natalee Styrczula and Halle Sweis are the four sophomore and a trio of freshmen: Isabella Giertuga, Marissa Pasco, and Grady Travis round out the roster.

In the preliminary round, which was held on Friday, Feb. 2, the Porters placed second with a score of 90.57. Belvidere North (91.76) was first. Those scores do not, however, carry over to the final day.

With the third place finish, Lockport took home its eighth trophy in Competitive Cheer.

That is the second best in the state behind Lemont, which won the medium school division for the second straight season and sixth time overall on Saturday.

The Indians brought home their 12th trophy in the 13 years of the IHSA state tournament.

Making its third ever state appearance, Plainfield South had its highest finish. The Cougars placed ninth in the coed division last year.
