Luncheon raises funds to support Cornerstone Cornerstone Champagne Luncheon marks 26th year

The lights are twinkling and the ballroom is buzzing from wall to wall as the waiter fills a glass with foam-topped champagne for a woman seated at a table with two of her friends. The afternoon soon sped into action with laughter and

cheer swirling in a sea of fine china and crystal.

The festivities at the Nov. 23 event at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion, 17 S. Center St. in Joliet, marked the 26th annual Champagne Luncheon to support Cornerstone Services.

A number of community leaders and guests poured in to giveback to the agency.

Highlights at the event included live entertainment, dinner and an auction.

Vice President/Chief Development Officer Michelle Allen said holding the event is a great way kickoff to the holiday season.

“We have waiters that come out and they’re celebrity waiters, so they ask people for tips,” she said. “We have a stage in the center of the room. A lot of people at table will tip to get their waiter do something silly. So, maybe it’s

singing a song, maybe it’s juggling balls, maybe it’s try to hula-hoop.

But with that, we’re earning money for it in order to help our agency, which works with people with developmental disabilities.”

Among those serving as celebrity waiters this year were a number of elected officials and business professionals. Allen said having the community’s support is important to the agency.

This year’s event drew in more than 300 people.

On average, the fundraiser brings in between $20,000 and $25,000.

The hope, according to Allen, is that people learn more about Cornerstone Services and how they can help.

Sponsors for this year’s event included First Midwest Bank, HL Landscape and Veronica Ferro Interiors.

Downtown celebrates annual holiday tree Tree donated by Will County State’s Attorney’s Drug Court program

The Joliet City Center Partnership announced the Annual Christmas tree is installed in Van Buren Plaza at the corner of Chicago and Van Buren Streets, in downtown Joliet.

This year’s tree was donated by the Will County State’s Attorney’s Drug Court program, from their recovery home for women on Frank Avenue in Joliet.

The tree removal, transport, and installation services were fully donated by Arbor Tek Services and Chellino Crane.

“We are thrilled that our recov-

ery home, that gives hope to its residents, could donate this year’s tree which will bring much hope and good cheer to the entire city,” said Julie McCabe-Sterr, Coordinator of the Will County Adult and Juvenile Drug Courts.

The tree’s short journey across the river and installation took only two hours.

The Colorado Blue Spruce weighs approximately 3,000 lbs. and Arbor Tek estimated the height to be around 30 feet tall.

City of Joliet Traffic Engineer Russ Lubash selected the tree from

about 14 submissions because of its traditional conical shape and close proximity.

The tree was lit November 25 by Mayor of Joliet Bob O’Dekirk and University of Saint Francis President Arvid Johnson.

The Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) is reconstructing the Millsdale Road railroad crossing, west of Route 53 to install a new rail line for high speed rail and complete improvements to the gates and flashers.

The project is anticipated to end on or before December 14.

A detour route utilizes Route 53, Laraway Road, and Centerpoint Way. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area.

Protesters raise awareness for animal rights Protest started at 10 a.m. Nov. 25 along Plainfield Road near Mall Loop Drive

Dozens of Black Friday protesters took to the picket lines along Plainfield Road in Joliet, working to block Louis Joliet Mall shoppers from visiting the Furry Babies Store and demanding greater awareness for animal welfare and rights, a move coming after advocates spoke out in support of a proposed city ordinance to protect pets, consumers and taxpayers that encourages more humane models for the pet breeding industry.

The protest started at 10 a.m.

Nov. 25 along Plainfield Road between Mall Loop Drive and Tonti Drive. More than 40 people indicated through social media that they were going to protest.

The demonstration in part is aimed at denouncing city ordinances that appear to support the large-scale commercial pet breed-

ing industry, instead of a version preferred by protesters.

Demonstrators stood in solidarity and held up signs asking shoppers to exercise good judgment when making Black Friday purchases. The protest had been peaceful with some vehicles honking at those on the picket lines.

Morgan Drdak, an animal welfare advocate, was leading the demonstration located near Louis Joliet Mall. She said supporting the cause is important to her.

“We’re all animal lovers, and a lot of us in rescue have seen firsthand what puppy mills do to the dogs,” Drdak said. “It’s pretty graphic. I think it hurts a lot of our hearts to know what’s done and where these puppies come from. You don’t see it in the puppy, because the puppy is cute and wrapped up in a bow. But when you look at where they came from, that’s where the real tragedy is.”

supporters formed an advocacy group, Safe Pets for Joliet.

“The reason we were formed was to help the city of Joliet move forward with an ordinance that would stop pet stores from selling dogs that are acquired from commercial breeders and instead transition to a human model, where they would obtain their animals from places, like rescues and shelters and animal control, to try to reduce the homeless population of pets without bringing in more pets that were un-spayed, un-neutered, being sold at exorbitant prices,” she said.

Safe Pets for Joliet has been working with city to adopt an ordinance to address inhumane business practices for about two years.

“They’ve tabled it because there are a couple of other municipalities that have done it, that have been sued,” Drdak said. “So, the city wants to wait until those lawsuits are settled. They’ve already been ruled in federal court in favor of the municipalities. Right now Chicago and Cook County are under appeal, so they’re waiting until those

appeals go through.”

Drdak said in the meantime, she and other animal welfare advocates are looking to educate the public and make them more aware of their consumer responsibility.

Some protesters say they are pleased by changes seen to this point.

“I think it’s really important for people to understand that there’s an alternative to purchasing dogs in retail pet stores,” said Peggy Grandahl, another animal welfare advocate. “Pet shop dogs 99 percent of the time come from inhumane breeders and often largescale breeding operations. I’d like to

let people know that there’s always a choice that there are pure breed dogs—if someone wants a pure bred dog—they’re available at rescues and shelters.”

Why not give the large-scale commercial breeding industry a chance? Grandahl explained that sadly, litters of puppies are euthanized at shelters every day of the week in every part of the country.

“There’s no reason to spend thousands of dollars on a dog (and) finance them (through a retail pet store) when you can get a dog at a shelter 300, 400 dollars for a puppy,” she said.

“People don’t realize that it’s not a very humane nation we have right now, but seeing this (turnout) renews your faith.”

Eisenhower only school to earn Blue Ribbon Students, administrators and staff celebrate academy’s Blue Ribbon status Eisenhower Academy was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. Eisenhower is among 279 public and 50 private schools receiving this honor this year, including 21 Illinois schools. Eisenhower Academy is the only 2016 National Blue Ribbon School in Will County.

Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, Eisenhower Principal Wendy Wolgan, and Fifth Grade Teacher Jacque Toth represented Eisenhower Academy at the recent two-day awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where they

heard from U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr. and other educators, shared best practices with each other, and celebrated their hard-won achievements.

Each school also received a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama.

In the letter he stated: “This event celebrates schools that have worked to close achievement gaps and provide students with the resources they need to reach for their greatest aspirations. By coming together to honor excellence in education, you

are recognizing not only the work of institutions, but also the work of dedicated individuals – teachers, administrators, and family members – who have given their all to ensure America’s youth know no limits to what they can accomplish.”

Be informed when choosing health insurance plan It’s possible a bronze policy and maybe a silver one could end up costing more than a gold one with a higher premium THINKING ABOUT HEALTH

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE Even though the election is over and Republicans are in a position to repeal and replace Obamacare as they’ve been vowing to do for several years, that doesn’t mean you should avoid signing up for 2017 insurance coverage.

If you’re eligible and need insurance, the state shopping exchanges are open for business even if options this year are limited in many counties, particularly in rural areas. More than 40 percent of the counties where residents can buy an Obamacare policy have just one insurer selling them. That’s not a lot of choice, and policies that are offered are likely to have high premiums and limited options for doctors and hospitals.

Still, some careful shopping is in order to minimize any surprise bills. After the election, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest urged Americans to sign up and announced “the vast majority” of eligible consumers would be able to buy insurance for a monthly premium of $75 or less, which has been the administration’s sales pitch.

Assuming the White House math is correct, that doesn’t mean the vast majority should automatically buy a policy with a $75 premium. That strategy can mean expensive trouble later on. Reviewing the basics before wading into the Obamacare marketplace this year is essential.

For starters, recall that platinum policies, generally the most costly, cover 90 percent of someone’s medical costs; gold plans cover 80 percent; silver plans pay 70 percent; and the bronze variety pays the least—only 60 percent of a patient’s healthcare expenses. Silver plans have been the most popular, largely because those who buy them and have family incomes below $60,750 get extra government subsidies to help pay their

Bronze policies are popular, too, because they have low premiums, but people buying those policies won’t get the extra subsidies, a point that’s worth remembering. Those subsidies can be a big help if you need a lot of medical services. Both bronze and silver policies generally come with lower monthly premiums, but that doesn’t mean they are cheaper in the long run.

Here’s where comparison-shopping gets tricky. It’s possible a bronze policy and maybe a silver one could end up costing more than a gold one with a higher premium if you get sick. That’s because of the relationship between the premium, copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Insurers mix and match these features to fit their marketing strategy.

In general, a lower premium means higher deductibles and higher other out-of-pocket expenses. A policy with a higher premium often means lower out-of-pocket costs.

For 2017 the maximum amount a family would have to pay out-of-pocket for copays, coinsurance and deductibles is $14,300. That’s a lot of money and enough to deter some people from

signing up. Many people say paying that much before insurance pays isn’t really insurance. It’s also high enough to keep people from seeking medical care even when they need it. If people go to the doctor less, the country’s national health expenditures will drop— at least that’s the rationale for the high out-of-pocket limit.

An Indiana couple I’ve written about before in this column recently sent an email updating me on the family’s insurance options for next year. Their carrier had increased their $836 monthly premium to about $1,300; their cost even after an Obamacare tax subsidy was applied. What’s more, the reader said, the insurer had raised the amount of coinsurance for hospitalizations from 20 percent to 50 percent.

Given how much a hospital stay costs, they worried they’d be on the hook for a lot of money until they reached the $14,300 out-of-pocket maximum. It was a risk they weren’t willing to take, and they shopped until they found new coverage for only $700 a month with their subsidy.

Choosing an Obamacare policy or any other insurance coverage comes down to how much risk you want to assume. If you are reasonably certain you won’t need many medical services, you may want to take a chance and buy less expensive insurance that comes with high deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

But if you’re like the Indiana couple, and afraid of high expenses for unexpected medical care, buy the best policy you can afford that reduces that risk.

Another thing to keep in mind! Beware of policies with really low premiums, prices that seem too good to be true. Consumers who bought insurance from the Obamacare co-ops learned that.

Almost all of the 23 co-ops authorized to compete with the big carriers have gone out of business. They priced their policies too low, and too many sick people signed up. Government regulators closed them down, sending thousands of people scrambling for new coverage—an unwelcome chore for anyone.

Locals littler the 2016 Voyager Media All-Area football team

After missing most of the last two seasons to injury, Maine South quarterback Nick Leongas was told by some close to him that football may not be the best sport for him going forward.

After all, he missed his entire sophomore campaign with a torn meniscus in his knee – which he reinjured that winter in basketball – and last season was lost after week two when a hit in the game against Loyola broke his jaw in two places.

“The [injuries] really took a hit on me emotionally to watch all my friends go out last year and play without me. A lot of people were telling me to stop playing football and keep my body safe, but this team meant way too much to me,” Leongas said. “We wanted [a state championship] since we were little kids, since we watched the teams then win it.”

Not only did Leongas come back, he led the Hawks to the Class 8A state title with a win over Loyola last weekend at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium.

“This is the greatest feeling in the world. I can’t think of another feeling that surpasses this,” he said after the win.

On the season, the senior completed 166-of-267 passes for 2,871 yards and 28 touchdowns.

He also carried the ball 163 times for an additional 1,116 yards and 11 scores.

His numbers and leadership earned Leongas the Voyager Media 2016 Offensive Player of the Year.

“The best thing he does is uses his head,” Maine South coach Dave Inserra said of his quarterback. “He makes unbelievable decisions within the play and is unbelievable at just keeping guys calm on the field. He is not a big rah rah guy – he can at times, but usually he has a cool, calm demeanor and that is what you need in your quarterback and he played that to a tee all year long and just kept this team moving.”

While Leongas understands what he meant to the team, he also understands what his offensive line meant to him – keeping him healthy all season.

“Our offensive linemen stepped up big time,” Leongas said. “Kevin [Jarvis] was a big part of all of our wins, but guys like Danny O’Malley, Jack Farragher, James Hynes and Sean McNulty, who hasn’t played offensive line since freshman year.

They came up huge and they deserve the MVP of everything.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the 2016 Voyager Media Defensive Player of the Year also goes to a member of a state finalist, but this one comes from the SEE ALL-AREA PAGE 11

Merk earns state medal

EVANSTON – Lockport freshman swimmer Lindsey Merk already has accomplished a lot in her nascent high school career.

It looks like she’s just getting started.

Merk barely missed becoming the first state champion in program history Saturday when she finished third in the 100-yard butterfly at the state finals with a time of 55.56. Rosary junior Camryn Streid won in 55.39.

“It was great,” Lockport coach Grant Ferkaluk said. “She was right in the mix.

“She was less than two-tenths away from being a state champion, so (there) is lots of room to grow from here.

“This is a great learning experi-

ence for her and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she’s got in the next couple years.”

Merk already has a lot. She is the best butterflyer Lockport has ever had and her third-place finish equaled the highest finish in school history. Laura Nilson took third in the 100 backstroke in 2002 and Courtney Pope was third in the 200 freestyle in 2009.

“Top 6 was my goal and I got it,” Merk said. “I’ve been pretty much a flyer all my swimming career and it’s just hard work.

“I know this is what I want to do, so I went for it and I train hard for it and just wanted to make it happen.”

Merk began swimming when she was 6 and has extensive club experience. That prepared her for SEE MERK PAGE 13

While no Plainfield North defender posted gaudy numbers this season because the team played so well as a unit, it was senior linebacker JJ Frey that earns his place atop the all-area list.

On the season, Frey posted 109 tackles to go with 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups and one interception for a unit that allowed only 10 points per game.

In the state finals against East St. Louis – a team everyone said would be too fast for North – Frey led the way with seven solo stops, helping the defense allow only 20 points. The scoreboard read 26-13, but six of the Flyers’ points were on an interception return.

“Watching film, I knew I could read a gap and just go for it,” Frey said. “It was a state title game and I just had to go.”

Overall, Frey gives credit for his play to the defensive line, which he says allowed him to play the way he needed to.

“Ari (Ekowa) was all state and Tim Donnahue had [a lot of] sacks as a junior and a lot of times teams had to scheme for them,” Frey said. “I had a lot of opportunities to make a lot of plays and I was able to.”

North coach Tim Kane had Frey making plays for the Tigers for three years.

“He has been a three year starter for us and we maybe could have moved him up as a freshman, he is that type of player,” Kane said.

“He is a mature kid and he works so hard and is such a serious kid about football. He loves the game and plays so hard every down and just leads by example. He studies the opponent and knows what to

Because he wears No. 54 and not No. 2, people don’t realize how fast he is. He can plug a lead play inside, but he can also get outside and make a play or cover a kid out of the backfield. Our defense this year was not selfish and was not about the me stat. They were worried about the team stats - a win or a shutout or how many yards we gave up.”

KEVIN BLOCK PLAINFIELD NORTH Defensive back tallied 25 tackles on the season along with five interceptions and 10 pass break ups.

BEN COONEY BENET Defensive back posted 44 tackles, 32 solo, eight interceptions, one sack and 10 pass break ups.

ARI EKOWA PLAINFIELD NORTH All state defensive lineman tallied 49 tackles on the season, including nine sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, forced one fumble and had a pair of pass break-ups. He also played on the offensive line for the Class 7A state runners up.

OMARI FERGUSON JOLIET WEST Junior wide receiver was named to the first team allSouthwest Prairie Conference team after posting 48 catches for 612 yards and six touchdowns.

TY GAVIN NOTRE DAME Sophomore running back led the East Suburban Catholic Conference in scoring. He tallied 901 yards rushing on 166 carries and 13 scores, adding nine catches for 77 yards and score. He also completed one pass on the season, which went for a touchdown.

THOMAS HACKETT NOTRE DAME Senior middle linebacker posted 115 tackles on defense and 12 tackles for loss. Hackett forced five fumbles and recovered three, while breaking up four passes. He was a team captain and team MVP.

ARTHUR HART JOLIET WEST Junior safety tallied 90 tackles.

40 solo, had three interceptions and one sack. He was named to the SPC all-conference first team.

ISAIAH HILL MINOOKA North Dakota State-bound wide receiver posted 1,850 all-purpose yards on the season, catching 46 passes for 965 yards and 16 scores.

LUKE HINKAMP MAINE SOUTH Wide receiver caught 25 passes for 649 yards and 10 scores on the season.

MATT HOLBROOK MAINE SOUTH Wide receiver caught 47 passes for 783 yards and seven touchdowns. He also played defensive back for the Class 8A champion Hawks.

TYLER HOOSMAN PLAINFIELD N Tiger back carried the ball 230 times on the season for 1,692 yards and 26 TD. He also posted 201 receiving yards and four scores.

KEVIN JARVIS MAINE SOUTH Left guard headed to Michigan State. He had 37 pancake blocks

and allowed no sacks on the season for the state finalists. He was a two-time CSL South Linemen of the Year and well as two-time AllConference. Coach Dave Inserra calls him the “best linemen I have coached.”

Jarvis made an impact on defense the last part of the season.

FOTIS KOKOSIOULIS MAINE SOUTH The talented running back carried the ball 188 times for 1,464 yards, with 21 touchdowns. He also posted 36 catches for 588 yards and four scores.

On special teams, he had eight kick returns for 187 yards.

ALEC MCEACHERN BENET Redwing posted 94 tackles, 34 solo,, on the season. He tallied 14 tackles for loss, including four interceptions along with four interceptions, forced two fumbles and recovered one.

On offense, he carried the ball 65 times for 206 yards with one touchdown.

He added 12 catches for 138 yards and five scores.

TAVARES MOORE LOCKPORT Junior running back missed some time during the season, but still ran for 1,284 yards on 220 carries for the Porters. He posted 13 catches out of the backfield for 174 yards with 11 total touchdowns.

JOJO MCNAIR JOLIET CENTRAL Played a Jabrill Peppers role for the Steelmen this season. He led team in rushing (44 carries for 407 yards and four touchdowns) and receiving (47 catches, 407 yards, 3TD).

As a defensive back, he tallied 22 tackles and two interceptions, taking one back for a touchdown.

Of 15 kickoff returns, McNair tallied 339 yards (22.6 average), including a 100-yards touchdown.

“There’s nothing like it,” Merk said. “I’ve been to junior nationals and other big meets and it’s still nothing like it.

“It didn’t feel normal. It was so much different than anything I’ve ever experienced.”

That understandably led to some jitters during Friday’s preliminaries, which probably cost her a shot at another medal. Merk was 15th in the 100 backstroke in 57.16, missing the cut for finals by .20.

“I was very nervous yesterday,” Merk said. “In the backstroke I ran into the lane line.

“It was a bad mistake. I probably would have dropped a lot more (time) if it wasn’t for that.”

But Merk made up for that with her performance in the butterfly. She was one of just two freshmen to earn a medal in the event and the only one to qualify for the championship heat.

“Today I was a little less nervous because I did what I wanted to do,” Merk said. “I wanted to make top 6.

Interestingly, Merk succeeded despite making what she said were a slew of mistakes.

“On all my turns, I messed up,” Merk said. “I went in too long.

“But the last 25 I was pushing and I was so close. I (knew) if I want to do this, I’m going to have to go out and be pushing like crazy.

Merk’s final push came up just short as Streid touched the wall an instant before Merk and runnerup Olivia Andrew of Loyola.

“The finish always gets me, but it doesn’t matter,” Merk said. “I’m still so happy with how I did. I know it was a positive.”

While most swimmers consider the butterfly to be the toughest stroke, Merk feels differently.

“Freestyle is harder for me,” Merk said. “Fly is smoother for me.

I don’t know why.”

Ferkaluk figures Merk’s stroke is only going to get smoother.

“She’s got a lot of experience with the event,” Ferkaluk said.

“It’s something she’s done a lot of times.

“She’s just got it. I think she’s go-

ing to grow in that event and get much stronger.”

Merk agrees.

“I know this is a positive outlook for my club season and definitely for next year, too,” she said. “There are some things that I need to work on, obviously, but for now this is a good insight into my future.”

Lockport had two relays compete at state but neither advanced to the finals. The 200 medley squad of senior Brittany O’Neill, sophomore Oliwia Wolek, Merk and senior Lauren Estes placed 25th in 1:49.67, while the 400 free quartet

JTHS alumni board endows new scholarship Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Joliet Central and a Joliet West senior

The Joliet Township High School Alumni Association Board of Directors recognized Lynne Lichtenauer, the former JTHS Director of Alumni Relations, by naming an endowed scholarship in her honor at a recent ceremony in the new Joliet Central student center.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Joliet Central and a Joliet West senior. Also included in the ceremony was the presentation of a plaque in Lichtenauer’s name placed in the student center’s entrance.

State Representative Natalie Manley read a citation from the Illinois House of Representatives

recognizing Lichtenauer and State Representative Larry Walsh, Jr., on behalf of Senator Jennifer BertinoTarrant, read a citation from the Illinois Senate.

Lichtenauer began her career at JTHS District 204 in 2000 as the Centennial Coordinator responsible for directing the year-long 100th anniversary celebration of the high school in 2001.

Following the anniversary, the Board of Education named her Director of Alumni Relations, a position she held until June of 2016.

During her tenure, Lichtenauer worked closely with Steelmen, Kingsmen, and Tiger alumni for their respective class reunion celebrations; established a comprehensive alumni database; spearheaded several projects with the JTHS staff, administrators and faculty including the annual Joliet Central veterans ceremony, and implemented the district’s Opera-

tion Recognition program whereby diplomas are awarded to veterans who left their classroom to go to war or for military duty prior to graduation.

She also initiated Joliet’s first Santa Run 5K/Santa Stroll One Mile Walk and led the formation of the JTHS Alumni Association.

In the Joliet community, Lichtenauer serves as a board member of the Joliet Area Historical Museum, the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation, the JTHS Foundation, the Joliet Park Foundation, and the Silver Cross Hospital Foundation.

In 2011, Lichtenauer was inducted into the Joliet Area Hall of Pride by the Joliet Will County Project Pride organization. She is the co-host of the weekly WJOL broadcast, “Friday Mornings with Lynne, Mary & Natalie.”

Presence Saint Joseph among grant recipients $70K grant will be used to conduct hospital emergency preparation activities Seven Presence Health hospitals were awarded a $70,000 grant by the Illinois Public Health Department (IDPH) for the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) to enhance hospital preparedness during public health emergencies.

The grant will be used to conduct hospital emergency preparation activities at Presence Mercy Medical Center (Aurora), Presence Saint Joseph Hospital (Elgin), Presence Covenant Medical Center (Urbana), Presence United Samaritans Medical Center (Danville), Presence Saint

Joseph Medical Center (Joliet), Presence Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston) and Presence St. Mary’s Hospital (Kankakee).

Previously, HPP funds have been used to support facility evacuation planning and training, sheltering patients and staff in place, mass fatality management and disaster response.

In addition, the hospitals have applied funding to purchase pharmaceutical caches during emergency response situations.

Grant funding has also been used to retain Regional Disaster Preparation Liaisons.

These specialists support development and maintenance of preparedness plans as well as purchase equipment, including mobile medical units and equipment to communicate with local emergency responders.

The HPP grants have also helped Presence Health hospitals develop health care coalitions with other hospitals and health care systems, community businesses and non-government organizations which can support a facility in caring for patients during emergencies.

Festival, parade brings holiday season spirit Parade organized by the Joliet City Center Partnership

The holiday season filled the streets of downtown Joliet on Nov. 25 as thousands of spectators were on hand to kickoff the annual Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade.

Anne Slabaugh, of Joliet, said she was looking forward to kicking off the holiday season with her children and her husband, Matt.

“I like all the bands and the kids have fun doing it,” she said.

Matt agreed.

“I like to see all the different floats and bands,” he said.

This year was the Slabaugh’s second time taking part in the festivities.

Anne said the reason behind the event’s popularity is clear.

“I think everyone’s off work, and people are starting to get in the holiday spirit,” she said. “I would say it’s a better parade than most. There’s a lot of school bands, and kids love it with so much candy.”

Noting that celebrating Christmas is a big deal in her family, Anne

said she’s excited to have an early chance to get into the holiday season spirit. “(I) look forward to it all year,” she said.

Matt mirrored that sentiment.

“It’s because it’s a good time to spend with family,” he said.

Melissa Campopasso, of Joliet, was watching the parade with her sister-in-law and their children. She said the event organizers put on a good show and parade.

“It was a very good time,” Campopasso said. “Our kids very much enjoyed it.”

This year was Campopasso’s first time visiting the festival and parade.

“Events like this are definitely a good idea,” she said.

Noting that the holiday season is her favorite time of year, Campopasso said it’s nice to see the community come together.

“It’s just a fun time of year,” she said.

Taran Glunz, 18, of Joliet, was watching the parade with his younger brothers and sister.

“Seeing them have fun, I guess, I had fun,” he said.

Glunz said of all the festivities in downtown Joliet, he was most surprised by the parade.

“I didn’t get bread this year,” he said, adding that he always looks forward to getting a loaf bread

when Milano Bakery makes their way through the parade.

Noting the sense of discord between the police and community, Glunz said he thinks the parade and festival serves a meaningful purpose.

“Everybody just coming together for the holiday is good,” he said.

The Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade was organized by the Joliet City Center Partnership.

The main sponsor for the event was the University of St. Francis.
