Aspiring chef shares skills with Joliet Central students Joliet Central High School alumnus Adan Estrada, Class of 2012, returned to his alma mater and shared his professional culinary arts expertise with Joliet Central teacher Rochelle Bjelland’s culinary arts classes on November 17.

Estrada explained that, after exploring his interests in the culinary arts as a high school student, he has studied diligently in the Joliet Junior College Culinary Arts program and is now employed as a Culinary Arts Lab Assistant in the JJC City Center Campus.

During his visit, Adan demonstrated how to prepare a risotto dish. The students were excited to see the demonstration, especially as many of them were unfamiliar with risotto.

Adan brought his own fresh ingredients and explained the sci-

ence, creativity, and techniques related to the dish he was preparing.

He also talked about his experiences in the culinary arts

program and answered student questions.

“It was a great having Adan back in the classroom, Bjelland said. One of the best rewards a

teacher can have is seeing your student being successful and doing what they love! I think it was a great experience for the students as well, being able to see

someone that achieved what he went to school for here at Joliet Central. Although it is hard work, Adan has shown that hard work and perseverance pays off.”

Council opts for new parking Joliet Noon Lions meter purchases, installations efforts net pounds of recyclable materials

Joliet officials are looking to make commuting in and around the city more convenient.

“We’re expanding the … [the system for] automatic payments for downtown parking,” Councilman Larry Hug said at a recent city council meeting. “It’ll be easier to pay with your credit cards, no more coins. You can also down the road be able to pay with your cellphone through an app. There will be a convenience charge.”

New parking meters could also help the city in addressing the insolvency of its parking fund, Hug said after the meeting.

The pay-by-space terminals are currently active on New Street, Washington Street, Eastern Avenue, York Avenue commuter lots, Union Station, Barrett’s parking lot and the two on-street trial locations.

In June, Joliet began a pilot program for replacing the coin-operated parking meters with multispace pay stations that can accept coin, as well as credit and debit cards. Since that time, the city has determined the venture to be a success.

As such, the council took action to replace additional meters, which are to be supplied and installed by Total Parking Solutions, by approving a $14,820 proposal to install 19 pay and display terminals, making for a total cost of $178,980 with service agreements and software included.

A recommendation was made earlier this year to have a compensation study conducted. Since that time, GovHR has been working with city staff to implement changes to keep up with collective bargaining raises and combat future compression issues.

The city previously divided employees into four groups, but a proposal recommends 10 salary classifications, job title changes to better match duties to employees, and the implementation of a 2 percent salary increase for all collective bargaining units.

“I just think it’s too quick, too fast, and I would want some more information and [I would rather] vet it a little better,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said.

Quillman wanted to table the matter until a later date only to find that no one would second her motion.

“Just for record, I do not wish anyone not to have a raise, and I think people are not be paid what they should be paid,” she said. “[That] should be brought up to par.”

The matter also drew concern from a constituent during the meeting’s public comments section.

Joliet resident John Sheridan congratulated the city for consolidating the salary adjustments to allow for consolidation, which was long overdue, and said it is also

important to note that it appears some groups already have significant modifications on the books.

“It may be a little dangerous because you might want to look at management and the salary and non-salary employees and say that you’ll do a market adjustment every couple years,” he said. “That might be a little bit [more] fair because if you say you will, I mean, we have a city who has balanced a budget the last four years with reserve money, and this year probably won’t look that great with the reduction from the state [valued at] $1.9 million.”

The measure, as approved in a 6-2 decision, does not go into effect until January 2018. Council members Larry Hug and Quillman cast the dissenting votes.

Round it up A brief recap of action and discussion from the Nov. 7 meeting of the Joliet City Council: Council members approved a measure allowing for the renaming of the city’s multi-purpose stadium located at 1 Mayor Art Schultz Drive to Joliet Route 66 Stadium.

The City of Joliet authorized the transfer of a police dog to Officer Robert Badertscher.

Officials entered into joint purchasing agreement with the State of Illinois and Cargill Incorporated to purchase bulk rock salt at a rate of $46.13 per ton. The city is anticipating that it will need 12,000 tons of bulk rock salt during the 20172018 winter season.

The Joliet Noon Lions Club was recently recognized for it recycling initiatives. During a five-month period, the club collected over 2,000 pairs of eyeglasses, 61 hearing aids, 329 ink cartridges, 11 cell phones, almost 2 pounds of used keys, and over 7 pounds of pop tabs.

Coordination, cleaning sorting, storing and transporting is accomplished with the assistance of the Lions of Illinois Foundation.

All of these items are collected via the Club’s over 40 collection boxes located in the Joliet area.

Glasses are cleaned, sanitized, prescription determined, and then sorted by prescription and sent on Sight Missions worldwide. Hearing aids are cleaned, sanitized, and repaired if needed, and are used locally for those in need. Cell phones are cleaned, on the surface and stored information erased, and are provided to local groups that turn them into emergency phones and distributed to those in need. Keys and pop tabs are sent and melted down for saleable metals.

The Joliet Noon Lions Club is a service club of about 45 members with the motto of “We Serve.” The club is approaching 100 years in Joliet.

IDOT, ISP, Tollway urge motorists to prepare for winter driving Motorists should practice basic winter driving skills and build extra time into their schedules As bitter cold creeps into Illinois, the state’s frontline weather responders remind motorists that preparation can help take the bite out of winter this season. The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and the Illinois Tollway encourage motorists to prepare for wintry driving conditions and remember: “Winter Weather - Get it Together.”

“Winter weather can be unpredictable in Illinois, but preparation today will make a safer tomorrow,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. “Drivers should start easing into those winter driving behaviors now. Our snow-and-ice teams are ready, as always, to make this a safe, successful winter driving season.”

Throughout the winter, especially during adverse conditions, motorists should practice basic winter driving skills and build extra time into their schedules. As part of the “Winter Weather - Get it Together” campaign, all travelers are encouraged to follow these simple rules and tips during the coming months: Always wear a seat belt. It’s the law in Illinois.

• Slow down. Slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering and slower braking all are required in winter driving conditions.

• Drop it and drive. Put down the handheld devices - it, too, is the law in Illinois.

• Don’t crowd the plow. A snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you.

• Avoid using cruise control in snow and ice.

• Watch out for black ice on roads that appear clear but can be treacherous.

• Be especially careful approaching intersections, ramps, bridges and shady areas. All are prone to icing.

• Do not travel during bad

weather unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to make a trip, check the forecast and make sure someone is aware of your travel route.

Consider taking public transportation if it is an option.

• Prepare an emergency kit that contains jumper cables, flares or reflectors, windshield washer fluid, a small ice scraper, traction material, blankets, non-perishable food and a first-aid kit.

• Carry a cell phone and a car charger in case of emergency.

• Follow Scott’s Law. Slow down and move over for stopped emergency, construction and maintenance vehicles.

“Winter weather causes extremely dangerous driving with black ice and white out conditions,” said ISP Director Leo P. Schmitz. “Plan ahead by checking your windshield wipers, vehicle fluid levels, proper tire inflation and tread depth. Remember to avoid unnecessary lane changes and as always, reduce your speed and increase following distances. Don’t crowd the plow. Give them room to work. A snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you.”

Before leaving the house, drivers are encouraged to check GettingAroundIllinois.com for continually updated information on winter road conditions, weather radars, road and bridge closures and other trafficrelated information. The site was recently redesigned in a mobilefriendly format providing a more

convenient way to access important information quickly. The winter road conditions map gives travelers the ability to zoom in to their location, travel route or destination and get real-time road conditions. At any time, motorists can check travel conditions by calling 1-800-452-IDOT (4368) or 1-800-TOLL-FYI. “Winter weather can make driving challenging for our customers, so our priorities are to keep the roads clear and provide roadway information to help drivers safely reach their destinations,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Greg Bedalov. “In return, we ask our customers to protect themselves and our workers by slowing down and increasing their distance from other vehicles, particularly during storms and severe weather.”

For the upcoming winter, IDOT will have more than 1,700 trucks available for deployment to plow almost 16,000 miles of roads statewide, the equivalent of driving from Springfield to the tip of South America and back. Last year, IDOT spread almost 305,000 tons of salt statewide. This winter, salt domes throughout the state are at capacity, with more than 550,000 tons on hand. Four hundred brand-new snow plows are ready to be deployed throughout the state.

The new trucks are more energy efficient and will reduce air pollution.

The Illinois Tollway is prepared to deploy its fleet of 196 snowplows for winter storms and has stockpiled more than 87,000 tons of salt to keep its 294-mile system of five tollways clear and safe for its 1.6 million daily drivers.

Sec. of State targeting abuse of disability parking Effort marks 11th year Secretary of State Police conducting shopping center stings Secretary of State Jesse White announced today that Secretary of State Police will conduct statewide parking stings targeting individuals illegally parking in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities at shopping malls beginning Nov. 24. Secretary of State Police will enforce the provisions of the Parking Program for Persons with Disabilities at shopping centers in Aurora, Bloomington, Carbondale, Chicago, Fairview Heights, Oak Brook, Orland Park, Peoria, Rockford, Schaumburg, and Springfield.

Nov. 24 marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season and one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Other enforcements will take place during the holiday season in Chicago, the suburbs and throughout the state.

The 5-foot-9, 173-pound running back has committed to play for Northern Illinois next season.

This year he put up 1,626 yards on 182 carries and 24 touchdowns and never fumbled the football.

He tacked on 31 receptions for 350 yards and five scores.

For his efforts, Kokosioulis is the 2017 Voyager Media Offensive Player of the Year.

“I looked at it as a compliment that teams tried to stop me,” Kokosioulis said. “It really helped us as a team if the opponent was trying to stop the run, it would open the passing game and then we could go back to the run. It was fun to be versatile and to be able to get the ball in the run game and pass game.”

He is an Illinois High School Football Coaches Association AllState selection for Class 8A, was the CSL South Offensive Player of the Year, is nominated for the Academic All-State team with a 3.54/4

GPA and is a candidate for the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year.

For his career, Kokosioulis passed 2009 Voyager Media Player of the Year Matt Perez for school records with 3,952 yards rushing and 58 touchdowns as well as racking up 6,351 all-purpose yards and 73 total scores. “(Perez) was awesome and we watched his highlights and to be able to pass him meant something a lot for me,” Kokosioulis said. “I couldn’t have had any of these records without my team. Not only did the line block for me, but the receivers blocked for me once I was past the line. I hope there is a kid out there watching me and trying to be as good or better than me – that would be great. Coach (David) Inserra talks all the time that we have to play for the people that came before us, playing now and the ones that are going to come.

So, it is cool if someone out there looks up to me and wants to pass me.”

Inserra said it was not only his talent that helped Kokosioulis get to where he got in the program record books.

“He not only holds all the records, but he may hold the record for showing up and giving 100 percent every single day,” said Inserra.

“He is the toughest competitor and never took a short cut and that is why he has those records. He has never in his life taken a short cut and that says a lot about him and SEE ALL-AREA PAGE 8

DEFENSIVE POY Benet Academy advanced to the IHSA Class 7A state semifinal game for the second-straight season this year and after suffering injuries on the offensive side of the football all season, it was the defense that really stepped up and helped carry the Redwings.

The Benet defense allowed only 17.5 points per game this season, including five games holing teams to less than 14 points and a pair of shutouts – including a blanking of No. 1 seed Rockton Hononegah on the playoffs.

At the center of that defense was senior Devin Petersen, who posted 167 tackles on the season, including 54 solo tackles. He had 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, four forced fumbles and one interception.

For his efforts, Petersen is the 2017 Voyager Media Defensive Player of the Year.

Like all team players, Petersen shined the light on his teammates for his success.

“I was very happy with how I played this year. My goal was to play better than I did last season and I think I accomplished that,” he said. “But all together, it was everyone and every single person helped. You can give the credit to certain people but everyone did their job and got us to where we are at.”

And while Benet fell short of the ultimate goal of playing in a state title game two years in a row, Petersen knows what being in the final four back to back seasons means.

“Coach New was talking and one of the things he said that hit me the most was that we left a legacy that is going to make Benet more well-known and we are happy with that,” he said. “We have to look

back and be proud of what we have done.”

Petersen is still looking at options for next season, but will play football on the college level.

The rest of the All-Area team members are:

JAXON AUBRY JOLIET WEST Junior quarterback completed 130 of 228 pass attempts this season for 2,001 yards and 15 touchdowns.

JACK BENISH BENET Defensive end tallied 97 tackles, 26 solo and 25 tackles for loss. He posted 13 sacks, 15 hurries, forved four fumbles and intercepted one pass.

MAX CHRISTIANO MINOOKA Offensively, he caught 19 passes for 272 yards and a team-best five touchdowns. On defense, he posted 48 total tackles with one interception. Also returned kicks.

“He is the QB of the defense,” said Minooka coach Terry McCombs. “He will be a scholarship player.”

JACK ESCHENBACH BENET

Prime target in the Benet pass attack, he hauled in 44 passes for 710 yards and five touchdowns.

OMARI FERGUSON JOLIET WEST Favorite target of Aubry, the senior wide receiver hauled in 34 passes for 861 yards and 10 TDs.

TY GAVIN NOTRE DAME The do-it-all junior was the Dons top player, never leaving the field. He played offense, defense and all special teams.

His bread and butter was as a running back, where he rushed for 1,217 yards and 19 touchdowns.

He also had 23 catches for 305 yards four scores. Overall he posted 1,522 yards from scrimmage and 23 TDs. Gavin was the MVP of the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

TOM GUSTAFSON PLAINFIELD CENTRAL On defense, he posted 118 tackles, two sacks, 14 tackles for loss, one interception, forced one fumble and recovered two and scored

one defensive TD. On the offensive side of the ball, he had 30 Carries for 137 yards and four rushing touchdowns, along with nine catches for 112 yards and two scores.

“Tommy was our team captain and truly the center of the success we were able to have this past season,” said Central coach Jon Pereiro. “He is an incredible football player who plays with passion and toughness not seen often.”

TYLER HAASE MINOOKA He has a total of 76 tackles this season, 31 solo to go along with two interceptions, one forced fumble, one recovered and a pair of defensive scores.

“He is the inside linebacker on what I feel is the best defensive unit in the area and one of the best in my 48-year career,” said McCombs.

KEENAN HAILEY JOLIET CATHOLIC The junior carried the ball 161 times on the season for 942 yards and four touchdowns.

“He was the captain of our offensive line from the center position,” Jaworski said. “He also contributed on the defensive line.”

Senior defensive lineman was as disruptive as they come in the state this season. He tallied 23 solo tackles on the season, to go with 24 assists and posted 22 tackles for loss. He had four sacks, six pass breakups, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one blocked kick.

He was named to the IHSFCA Class 8A All-State team.

DILLON MCCARTHY PLAINFIELD NORTH The Tigers’ version of the Swiss Army knife, McCarthy rushed 83 times for 554 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 370 yards and four TDs on offense. On defense, he had 51 tackles, 4.5 for loss to go with four pass break ups and four interceptions. McCarthy also added one defensive and one special team’s touchdown.

SHANE MCGRAIL PLAINFIELD NORTH Defensive end posted 58 tackles on the season, including 6.5 quarterback sacks and seven tackles for loss. He forced one fumble and recovered a pair this season to go

with two blocked kicks and a defensive touchdown.

BRADY MILLER PLAINFIELD NORTH Senior quarterback completed 153 of 255 pass attempts for 2,197 yards and 18 touchdowns. He carried the ball 42 times for 354 yards and another score.

SIR MUHAMMED ROMEOVILLE Cornerback tallied 23.5 total tackles, forced one fumble, had four pass break ups and blocked three kicks.

He also had three interceptions – all of which were returned for touchdowns of 36, 44 and 55 yards.

ZACH NADLE PLAINFIELD NORTH On offense he hauled in 28 passes for 366 yards and four TDs and added on a pair of rushing scores.

On defense, contributed 99 total tackles, including 54 solo – both team highs. He had five pass break ups and forced a pair of fumbles.

Law school grad can pay off his own debts DEAR DAVE, Our son is about to graduate from law school. He took out a loan to cover the cost, but we’ve always been debt-free and have been paying on it to help him out while he finishes his studies. The balance on the loan right now is around $30,000. He has a job waiting for him after he graduates, so we’re thinking about telling him it will be his responsibility to finish paying off the loan at that point. Is that wrong?

PAT DEAR PAT, There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a young law school graduate earning a living and paying off his own debt. I hope he appreciates how generous you both have been, but you shouldn’t feel as if you’re obligated to continue making these payments after he finishes school

and begins working.

Now, if you decide to pay it off for him as a gift for successfully completing law school — and you’re in a financial position to do so without hurting yourselves or your future — that’s fine, too. It would be another incredibly generous act.

And in my mind, generosity of that magnitude should be met with gratitude and appreciation of equal measure.

If you choose this route, let him know how and why you were able to give him this gift. Don’t hold it over his head or beat him up with it, but stress the importance of being wise with money, saving and investing, and staying out of debt in the future. Let him know if he’ll follow your example, he might be able to do the same kind of thing for his kids someday. That would be a wonderful thing to see, wouldn’t it?

On the first Sunday of each month, you may find soldiers, cooks, seamstresses, voyageurs or craftsmen sharing their talents. This program is led by the Isle a la Cache Brigade, a volunteer group that consists of re-enactors representing the fur trading community of the 18th century.
