The Chalkboard will close after 39 years of business online sales run popular education-based business out by ryan ostry bugle staff
@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com
All good things must come to an end. That is the case with The Chalkboard — one of the most popular businesses in Crest Hill, Aurora and Downers Grove. “I’m going to miss coming to work every day because I’ve been working here for 35 years,” said manager Joann Stockenberg. “I’m going to miss the people, the clientele and I’m going to miss my staff the most because their work ethic is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.” All three local locations will be closing, however, a date has yet to be announced. Ken and Norma Ireland founded The Chalkboard on August 1, 1980, thrived for years, catering to teachers and students. The couple is still president, secretary and treasurer of the business and said that it is because of online shopping why The Chalkboard will no lon-
ger be open. “It’s closing because of Amazon and online sales,” Stockenberg said. “People are coming in and scanning our bar codes and they’re then looking for the product cheaper elsewhere.” Throughout the years, The Chalkboard has provided products such as school supplies for teachers and children, games, puzzles and other fun services to enhance learning and play. “The kids, when they come in and see something new as well as the teachers when they see the new themes every year is also something we won’t be able to experience that I’m going to deeply miss,” Stockenberg said. “I’m going to miss having this business as a home, because it is a home.” The Irelands released a public statement to shoppers who visit The Chalkboard, explaining why they’re going out of business. An emphasis stating how Amazon has been the reason businesses are closing, how the commercial real estate tax in communities is drying up and how Amazon has had an unfair competitive advantage by not being required to collect sales tax which is another reason they are more price competitive were all included in the message.

We’ve just seen the business keep declining here and it’s because of the online service ... there’s been an overwhelming feeling of sadness from our customers it really hurts a lot. “Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon, is a brilliant and successful entrepreneur, and even after his widely publicized divorce, he will still enjoy a net worth

Police conduct roadside safety checks, seatbelt zones during Thanksgiving
T
he Joliet Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, will participate in a statewide effort to increase seatbelt usage and crack down on drunk driving. Special enforcement efforts will include several seatbelt safety zones at various locations throughout the city, a roadside safety checkpoint, and citywide saturation enforcement. The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and more vehicles on the roadways means potential for more crashes and more fatalities. In 2014, on average, 1 person was killed every 53 minutes in a drunk-driving crash in the United States. That totaled 9,967 drunk-driving fatalities that year. Too many people are not getting the message. Drunk driving is deadly and illegal. In fact, even if you have a BAC under .08, you could still be arrested and convicted of drunk driving. During all of 2014, a total of 21,022
passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes, and almost half (49%) of them were NOT wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Among passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in 2014, the age groups 13-15 and 2534 had the highest percentages (59%) of occupants who were unrestrained at the time of their fatal crash. Officers assigned to these details will be checking for occupant, child restraint violations, DUI violations, as well as other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code. This enforcement campaign is possible through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation and will help to deter drunk driving and increase the usage of seatbelt and child restraints during and after the Thanksgiving holiday.
be alarmed! smoke alarm program The Joliet Fire Department has received a generous donation of 150
Smoke Alarms and Installations kits from First Alert. This will help to educate the public on PA-100-0200, which will require Smoke Alarms with a 10 year sealed battery to be installed in all dwellings, which were either built before 1988 or which do not already have hardwired smoke detectors. If interested in requesting a free smoke alarm and installation you must meet the following criteria: Residence must be a Home, Condo, Townhome or Apartment and must be owner occupied. Must be built prior to 1988. No Rental Properties. You can then send an e-mail to Smokedetectors@joliet.gov Please provide your name, address, phone number and date (as listed below) that you would like us to install the smoke detector at your place of residence. You will then receive an email to confirm your date and time. Pick one of the following dates that works for you. All installation will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
of over $160 billion,” Ireland said in a press release. “He has earned this because he is brilliant, but he is also killing our/your towns.”
The Chalkboard customers, for the time being, have been informed that there is now a 50-percent to 70-percent off store-wide sale and “limited stock on hand, all sales final” bargain taking place at the three locations. “We’ve just seen the business keep declining here and it’s because of the online service,” Stockenberg said. “There’s been an overwhelming feeling of sadness from our customers — it really hurts a lot.”

Community demands more safety at Rt. 52, County Line Rd. Idot officials say there have been 115 crashes at the deadly intersection, but are conducting a study to help come up with a solution to fix the issue by ryan ostry bugle staff
@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com The community of Will County is demanding a change that has left its mark in a negative way over the past 10 years. With more than 100 accidents at Route 52 and County Line Road, residents of Will County have had enough. “I am hopeful we will here back from IDOT [Illinois Department of Transportation] here in the next few weeks,” said Shorewood Village Administrator Jim Culotta. “Something needs to be done.” IDOT, which has said there have been 115 crashes at that intersection between 2009 and 2018, said that more than a third have resulted in serious injuries.
It’s unfortunate even though that we identified the road being a problem it took a fatality to get responsiveness. We’ve been told that they’re out there doing a traffic study and the report in december will have suggestions on how it can become more safe. Most notably as of late, 27-yearold Paige Quinn was killed at the deadly intersection just last month. On her way to her grandmother’s funeral with her parents, the Jeep her and her parents were riding in was struck by another vehicle. A study that IDOT is currently doing for preventive measures and to ensure safety among residents and
those who pass through the intersection is currently being evaluated. Culotta said that the village should be hearing back from IDOT within the next three weeks, hoping that there is good news for what can be a safer road to travel on in the future. “We were told that they might

Will County Sheriff’s Office seize 190 lbs. of cannabis california man in custody On November 18, 2019, at approximately 8:30am, deputies from the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Interdiction Unit, were conducting patrol on Interstate 80 when they observed a recreational vehicle with the windshield wipers turned on because of rain but the vehicle did not have its headlights on as required by law. A traffic stop was conducted at I-80 and Briggs Street in Joliet. Deputies spoke to the driver, Michael Glenn Silliman, age 64, of 2402 Delaware Street in Huntington Beach, California. He was the sole occupant in the vehicle and stated he was coming from California to visit friends. While speaking with Silliman probable cause to search the vehicle was determined and performed. Found inside the 1997 BMI 110 Recreational Vehicle was: *190 lbs. of cannabis

have a conclusion for that meeting in early December,” he said. “Ultimately the state is going to dictate what happens there.” Because of the recent fatality with Quinn, Troy Township Supervisor Joe Baltz said that fatality really made people open up their eyes to the issue, and since then, the state community has wanted a dramatic change. “It’s unfortunate even though that we identified the road being a problem it took a fatality to get responsiveness,” Baltz said. “We’ve been told that they’re out there doing a traffic study and the report in December will have suggestions on how it can become more safe.” Baltz added that because of the certain jurisdiction that counties have or do not have, it has made the
process go by slower on how to deal with the issue. “Troy Township doesn’t have jurisdiction, “ Baltz said. “Basically there is an Area one and Area two which consist of Will and Kendall County, so IDOT has two separate districts.” In trying to find a way to rectify the major problem, Baltz said that he would like to see a traffic light or a four way stop, but the state has already issued that as a major plan that would take a years to achieve. “The problem has been said about having a traffic light that it would take something like five years to implement,” Baltz said. “I’m not sure if we need a four way traffic stop or what, but something has to be done because the visibility of the curve is not ideal at all and we can’t continue to have these issues.”

Dave Says: Setting aside money for a wedding
there’s not really a baby step for weddingsit should probably come after baby step 5 dear dave, We recently started following your plan, and it has made a huge difference in our financial outlook and our marriage. When it comes to the Baby
Steps, when do you recommend setting aside money for a wedding? We have a daughter, and we want to be able to do as much as possible for her when the time comes.
JIm dear JIm, That’s a good question. There’s not really a Baby Step specifically for weddings. In my mind, it should probably come after Baby Step 5—setting aside a college fund for your kids. Maybe part of this is the dad in
me, but in prioritizing these things I think a good education is more important than a big wedding. Don’t get me wrong, a wedding is a wonderful event and cause for lots of joy and celebration. But it’s also a one-day event. Plenty of people have inexpensive, beautiful weddings, and enjoy long, wonderful lives together!

benet’s monson repeats as player of the year notre dame-bound libero paced redwings’ state championship run BY mark gregorY editorial director
@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com
Does someone’s name truly define them? In the case of Benet Academy senior Hattie Monson, the answer is a resounding yes. Monson said her parents chose her name as they drove through Hattiesburg, Mississippi and liked how it sounded. However, by its American origin, the name means “Home Ruler.” A self-admitted gym rat, Monson made the Benet volleyball court her home the last four years and she ruled it with authority. Monson posted 370 digs, 98 assists and 12 service aces on the season. For her efforts, she was named Enterprise Publications Volleyball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. “She is special,” said Benet Academy coach Brad Baker. “It is easy to recognize the kids that pound volleyballs and it may be hard when you only see small glimpses of her. As a coaching staff, we get to see her on a daily basis.” Helping her teammates get the glory is something Monson takes pride in. “Being the one that gets the balls up so they get their kills gives me so much joy, so being the one that puts my body on the line for my setter and my hitters, I love doing that,” she said. “I have always been a gym rat and I love to be on the floor, so being a libero was meant for me. “My freshman year as a (defensive specialist), I learned what it was like to be a Benet libero and I realized ho far behind I was and how hard I had to work to get my skills better and be in that legacy of Benet liberos and to win a state title doing it.” That legacy was following not one,
but two NCAA Division-I liberos that came before her. “There are people that say they want to be like Haddie, but are they willing to put in the work? Very few kids are,” Baker said. “We have had some who have – Tiffany Clark and Caroline Wolf — that have put in the time if you want to be that good. It is dedicating long hours in the gym and she has done it since she has been a little kid and she loves it. She is a gym rat. If we told her that we would win a state title if she ran through the wall, she would just ask which one. I can go on and on about all the great plays she makes and how great of a kid she is. She is still humble. She makes normal plays look super easy, she makes difficult plays look easy. If she gets a touch on the ball, we are getting a swing.” With the Redwings’ title this sea-
son, Monson earned her first career IHSA state title in her last chance before she heads to play at the University of Notre Dame. “This is the last time I will wear the Benet jersey. This was four years in the making and I tried to cherish every moment,” she said. The rest of the 2019 Enterprise Publications All-Area girls volleyball team is:
Mia Alessio Minooka Senior libero tallied 448 digs and 29 aces for the Indians and was named to the all-Southwest Prairie Conference first team. “Mia led the team in digs this season and was the strong force to our defense,” said coach Carrie Prosek. “She is one of the hardest workers and competitors on the team.”
Heidi Bonde Minooka Junior outside hitter posted 374 kills, 132 digs, 43 blocks and 10 aces this season. She broke the Minooka school record with 27 kills in one match. She was first-team All-SPC and has already committed to University of Central Florida. “Heidi led the team in kills as a junior and also as a sophomore, she was a six-rotation player and being 6-3, she has a great reach and shots and has really developed into an amazing player,” said coach Carrie Prosek. “She really stepped up during IHSA playoffs and we are excited for her return next year.”
Anna Gawron Plainfield North

If she did not come back so quickly from her injury, we probably would not have gone to state. She is the glue player who holds the team together.”
Riley Hungate Joliet Catholic Academy Sophomore outside hitter that was not originally slated for the varsity lineup, but posted 177 kills, 19 aces, 127 service points, 10 blocks and 162 digs. “Riley has been a Godsend this season. She was a leader not only on the court but off as her positivity was infectious when her team needed it most,” said coach Nick Mraz. “She helped lead Lockport to an overall record of 26-12 despite a very tough schedule and back-to-back regional championships for the first time since 2005-2006. She was named SWSC All-Conference and team MVP for a second consecutive year.”
Bella Ray Joliet Catholic Academy Senior middle hitter posted 289 kills, 92 blocks, 13 assists, 23 digs. The 6-3 Ray was a four-year starter for the Angels and led them to a pair of state medals. She was the key leader all three years, breaking school records for season and career,” said coach Carrie Prosek. “She is very athletic who blocks and plays like she is over six-foot. She is very hard to read on the court running our 5-1 offense. Zoey is the best setter Minooka has ever had and she is the best setter I have ever coached and will be tough shoes to fill.”

Win $500 Prize in Preserve the Moment Photo Contest
enter november’s contest by 11:59 p.m. on saturday, november 30
I
f you haven’t entered the Preserve the Moment photo contest yet, time is of the essence not only as November comes to a close but also because the end is near for this year’s contest, which wraps up on December 31. Sure, the weather hasn’t exactly been stellar lately, but don’t let that stop you from getting outdoors and exploring nature. There are plenty of opportunities to snap a photo of a variety of wildlife that are easier to spot now that most of the leaves have fallen, to find some cool fungus, or simply take in the scenery. So go ahead and venture out into a preserve and try to wow the judges. Just be sure to enter November’s contest by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, November 30. Even if you don’t have anything from this month, photos taken in a preserve since the contest started in April also can be submitted. If you’re just finding out about the contest now, it’s a good time to go through your recent nature photos and enter a potential winner. Each monthly finalist — as voted on by a panel of judges — will receive a $75 MasterCard gift card and
advance into the final round of judging once the contest concludes on December 31. The top three winners will be determined by a public vote on the District’s Facebook page, with the first-place winner receiving a $500 gift card; second place, $250; and third place, $150. Three random drawings also will be held for all contest participants and those three winners will each receive a $75 MasterCard gift card. All who enter receive a participation gift. Participate in the “Woods Walk” program, which will get you moving in some wonderful natural settings. Visit Hadley Valley Preserve, which just earned an Excellence in Ecological Restoration accreditation. Register for a guided hiking program and bring your camera, because these hikes are a great way to see – and learn about – wildlife in the preserves. Check out our Will County Wildlife Facebook Group to see what everyone else is spotting throughout the county. Check out our Instagram account and Flickr page. Participants may enter up to five digital photos per month. All photos must be uploaded via the District’s contest upload page. Be sure to fill out all of the required information, including the date and location the photo was taken. Photos must be taken by amateur

$5.3 Million grant awarded to Veterans Memorial Trail Project a new 3.5-mile section of veterans memorial trail will become a reality thanks to a $5.3 million federal grant
The paved trail section will be built in Homer Township from 159th Street, just east of Interstate 355, south to Hadley Valley preserve. Construction could begin sometime in 2020. The northern section of the new trail segment will connect to a path the Illinois Department of Transportation is building along the north side of 159th Street from I-355 east to Route 45. The southern section of the new Veterans Memorial Trail segment will connect to the Forest Preserve’s Spring Creek Greenway Trail.
The Transportation Alternatives Program grant was allocated recently by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning as part of $475 million in federal funds awarded to 70 transportation improvement projects throughout the region. The grant will pay for 80 percent of the Veterans Memorial Trail extension. The City of Lockport is contributing $575,000 for the project, which will help the Forest Preserve pay its 20 percent grant match. “The city recently completed its Bike Path Master Plan Survey and the Veterans Memorial Trail is a huge
part of that plan,” said City Manager Ben Benson. “We’re really looking forward to this new trail extension.” The trail segment is a critical link in a collaborative effort by the Forest Preserve and its partners to build out Will County’s regional trail system, said Ralph Schultz, the District’s chief operating officer. “Connections like these offer true nonmotorized alternatives that clean our air and offer healthy options for travel between our homes, businesses and natural areas,” he added. “We look forward to working with others to continue to expand the Veterans Memorial Trail in the future and provide additional opportunities and connections within our communities.”
owned by the U.S. Forest Service, and Pilcher Park, which is a City of Joliet park, will not qualify for the contest. For a list of all Forest Preserve locations, check out the District’s preserve page and be sure to read the contest
rules before entering. Entries not adhering to the rules will automatically be disqualified. The Preserve the Moment photo contest is sponsored by The Nature Foundation of Will County.
