To ensure that local veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces are honored, Joliet Central High School held a ceremony Nov. 10.

Activities at the annual event included musical tributes, patriotic hymns and a moment of silence.

Joliet Central High School principal Shad Hallihan said holding the event brings great meaning to the campus community.

“It’s always just such a privilege to see so many veterans here and

to hear the wonderful stories about the service they made to our country,” he said.

More than 40 veterans were recognized during the ceremony with a reading of their biographies.

Vic Genge, of Joliet, said it was nice being part of the program to honor local veterans.

“Now it’s nice to be appreciated,” he said. “It really is. I’m proud of having served in the air force, served in the military, and it’s really nice to be appreciated.”

Genge served in the air force from 1968-1971 spending the latter year based in Vietnam.

Noting that Vietnam was not a popular time to serve in the military, Genge said he’s glad the nation’s view of the matter is changing.

“When I came back from Vietnam, Vietnam was not a popular war,” he said. “People in the military that served in Vietnam were looked down upon. We weren’t welcomed home. Today, they have a much different view of the military.”

Genge explained that politics and bad press tarnished their reputation for many years but could tell that public perceptions have shifted the conversation.

Still, Genge said there’s more to the stories of Vietnam veterans

that young people in today’s world might never fully comprehend.

“I don’t think that the generation now really understands what it was like coming back from Vietnam,” he said. “I didn’t have a gun, I wasn’t fighting anybody, but I was supporting the troops that were.

When we came back, we definitely weren’t appreciated. World War I, World War II, Korea, Desert Storm, all of them, every other war, the service men when they came back, they were welcomed back. Fellas that came back from Vietnam were not. So, it’s nice that we’ve been accepted as supporting our country.”

Groups represented during the ceremony were the Joliet Central Symphonic Band, Joliet Central choirs and the JROTC cadets.

Following the program, students and guests had the opportunity to meet with veterans during a reception in the student center.

James Giacomi, of Joliet, said the program was a “tear jerker.”

“(I enjoyed) the band and how they introduced all the veterans, told them their rank, where they were at, and what they did in service,” he said. “I think it was fantastic.”

Giacomi devoted his time to serving the nation’s army in 1969 and 1972 by completing two tours in Vietnam.

During his time, Giacomi served as an M-60 machine gunner, worked intelligence, and was a communication radio specialist.

He would earn a number of accolades for his efforts including a Vietnamese campaign medal, a good conduct medal and national defense medal.

“I just found out today there’s only 800,000 Vietnam veterans left in this country,” Giacomi said. “I just found that out today—I always wondered how many were left— 800,000 in the country, that’s it. So, SEE VETERANS PAGE 19

Presence Saint Joes Gala raises more than $250K Proceeds will benefit recently completed Emergency Department renovation “Harvest Time in Napa Valley” was the theme of the 23rd annual Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center (PSJMC) Gala.

Nearly 500 guests attended the fundraiser at the Hilton Oak Brook Hills Resort and contributed over $250,000 to benefit the renovation of the hospital’s Emergency Department.

The Founders’ Award, PSJMC’s highest honor, was presented to Dan Stevenson, CFA Regional Market President of Midland States Bank, and Dr. Mukund Komanduri, CEO & President of MK Orthopaedics, Surgery and Rehabilitation.

He is also a member of the Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center Community Leadership Board.

Dr. Mukund Komanduri, a board-certified Orthopaedic surgeon, has been a member of the hospital’s medical staff since 1994.

He is an active member of the Medical Center’s Orthopaedic Council. He received the Pandola-Lewis Award in 2014, awarded at PSJMC’s Annual Charity Golf Classic.

“Our fundraising is focused on enhancing a physical space – the Emergency Department,” said Presence Health President and CEO Michael Englehart. “However, this investment really is

about people of Will County – the thousands of people who walk through our Emergency Department doors each year.”

The Emergency Department at PSJMC is one of the busiest in the State and Joliet’s only Emergency Department.

The hospital averages over 60,000 ED visits a year. Since the beginning of the year, they have averaged more than 175 patients per day with approximately 50 arriving by ambulance each day.

The gala featured live entertainment by local band Maggie Speaks and a broadcast of Game 4 of the World Series on the ballroom’s screens.

The event was co-chaired by Tricia and Danny Simpson and Herb and Cristina Martinez.

Democracy & our very vulnerable future ‘The election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury’

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY It was a moment as tiny as marking a ballot - those two minutes of the second debate, when the presidential election hung suspended middiatribe and the candidates let go of their opponent’s flaws long enough to honor a bit of common humanity.

No big deal. Yeah, I know.

But as the thing winds down to the day of reckoning, and a sense of lost values and lost democracy overwhelms me - the election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury (signifying nothing?) - I find myself going back to those two minutes over and over, trying to understand why they hit me with such force.

The second debate, possibly the ugliest playground fight of the three, was conducted in a “town hall” format, with a preselected audience of independent voters sharing the stage with the candidates, and at intervals an audience member was invited to ask the candidates a question. The debate was virtually over when moderator Martha Raddatz announced that “we’ve sneaked in one more question” and a man in the audience stood up.

“My question to both of you,” he said, “is, regardless of the current rhetoric, would either of you name one positive thing that you respect in

What?

The moment seemed almost parental. Maybe in a way it was: a corralling of two out-of-control youngsters into respectable behavior. In the scant mention I’ve read about it, the question, unsurprisingly, has been dismissed as trite and nicey-nice and irrelevant to the absolutely serious matter of whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should be the next, oh God, president, the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth, yada yada ...

Nevertheless, there was a palpable, if temporary, change in the dynamic of the situation. The palpable disgust each candidate exuded, without restraint, toward the other one - the sterile stump blather: “Yo, America, I’m way better than that fool over there” - quieted down. The debate was suddenly unscripted. The moment was live. They were both vulnerable.

Clinton jumped in. “I think that’s a very fair and important question,” she said. “Look, I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about Donald. I don’t agree with nearly anything else he says or does,

but I do respect that. And I think that is something that as a mother and a grandmother is very important to me.”

She went on a little more, reverting to stump-speech mode: “So I believe that this election has become in part so - so conflict-oriented, so intense because there’s a lot at stake. . . .” Etc., etc.

Then Trump answered: “I will say this about Hillary. She doesn’t quit.

She doesn’t give up. I respect that. I tell it like it is. She’s a fighter. I disagree with much of what she’s fighting for.

I do disagree with her judgment in many cases. But she does fight hard, and she doesn’t quit, and she doesn’t give up. And I consider that to be a very good trait.”

And that’s it. As I say, no big deal, except . . . I couldn’t stop thinking about a quote I once heard: You’re as close to God as you are to the person you like the least.

What had just happened stirred awake a different sort of consciousness, or so it seemed. And it was gone in a moment and had no effect on the outcome of the race or what the next four years will bring or the sport-andspectacle media coverage that refuses to let up or the actual issues that matter about the nation’s future - war, poverty, racism, environmental exploitation - or, anything else. But still, there it was, a moment of interruption to the national hooting contest, a disruption of the national certainty that hatred fixes so firmly into place.

And I thought about the time, many years ago, when my great nephew Joey was a newborn and I held him for the first time.

“But still,” I later wrote, “this is what I thought, that there was a quality to

Practice these safety tips to ensure a happy holiday Safety tips include avoiding displaying gifts from window view AT HOME Don’t display holiday gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Store gifts before you go away on a holiday trip.

If you go out for the evening, turn on lights, radio, or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied.

Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax deductible, etc. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers, don’t contribute.

Use only fire resistant ornaments on a holiday tree, and make sure that the Christmas tree lights are in good working order. Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home.

If you have house guests, advise them of your security precautions and make sure they follow them.

SHOPPING Shop before dark if possible.

When shopping at night, go with a friend or family member. Never park in an unlit area or parking lot, no matter how convenient it is.

Pay attention to anyone who appears to be loitering in the parking lot and remain alert at all times. Thieves will target victims who are distracted or on their cell phones and may even create a distraction themselves to pickpocket or steal.

Minooka takes nation’s top team to three in Class 4A finals

NORMAL — If the Cubs won the World Series and Donald Trump is our new president, then why couldn’t Minooka walk onto the floor at Illinois State University and hold its own against the No. 1 team in the nation in the Class 4A state title match.

And that is exactly what the Indians did.

While Minooka didn’t get the ultimate prize like Trump and the Northsiders, it was an effort for the ages.

The Indians fell 25-19, 19-25, 25-19 to Chicago’s Mother McAuley – the No. 1 ranked team in America by PrepVolleyball.com earning the program its first-ever state trophy.

“All season we have though that rankings don’t really matter to us and that we just we just went out there and played every game as if it were our last,” said Minooka senior setter Brooklyn Bachmann.

“No tears were shed because we lost that game. When we stepped off that court we knew that, yeah, there were a few plays we could have done better, but overall we out everything into that game and we were happy with that game.

The feeling is indescribable. It really hasn’t hit me that we were at state and that we just played Mother McAuley and took them to three. I think when it does, I will be a little more emotional.”

Minooka had the attitude all along the it was just another match against another team.

“Our coaches told is that anyone is beatable on any day and we really came in and wanted to execute a game plan,” said Alli Papesh. “We struggled in the first game and we stepped up in the second and all did our jobs and that is why we were so successful.

We can say that we took the No. 1 team in the nation to three in the state championship game.”

Former JCA quarterback gets chance to end career how he wants

As the Northern Illinois University football team took on Toledo at the first-ever football game played at the home of the Chicago White Sox – now named Guaranteed Rate Field – it did so with quarterback Anthony Maddie on the sideline in a walking boot.

Maddie had injured his ankle in the game the previous week against Bowling Green, was a game-time decision and tried to go, but was ruled out just before kickoff. He still hopes to return to the field this season in the Huskies’ final two games.

Injured and on the sidelines is unfortunately a position Maddie has found himself in a lot during his days in DeKalb, however, for a five game stint during the middle of this season, the Plainfield native found himself exactly where he always wanted to be – as a starting quarterback for a Division-I college football team.

Maddie, a fifth-year senior, replaced the injured Drew Hare and led Northern on a 3-2 run.

“It felt great. That first game as a starter was one of the best experiences I have ever had,” Maddie said. “It has been a lot of fun just being the guy and preparing and getting ready to go out and help my team win games as a starter. It is something I have never experienced before.”

As the starter, Maddie completed 105 of 175 passes for 1,213 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 82 for 575 yards and another seven scores.

When Hare went down this season, NIU head coach Rod Carey and the Huskies’ coaching staff decided to go with Maddie over redshirt sophomore Ryan Graham.

“That was big,” Maddie said of the decision. “At times when you are not the starter you wonder how much confidence the guys on the team and the coaching staff have in you, but that was proof that they did have that confidence in me and it’s a good

feeling they let me go out there and be the guy.”

Prior to getting the call, Maddie suffered through highs and lows in his football career, including missing out on a

chance to start a year ago when Hare went down with an injury.

Maddie had season-ending surgery earlier in the campaign and was not able to step in.

“Last year all the guys went

in statistical categories, posting more blocks (13-4) and more digs (73-59), but also committed errors on its own side of the net that killed rallies and provided McAuley with points.

“Making it this far is a huge accomplishment and it is any high school kid’s goal. We came out here and we took Mother McAuley to three. I know there are some out there that thought they would just step all over us,” Minooka coach Carries Prosek said. “It was unfortunate that we had so many unforced errors in the first and third game because in game two where we were errorless, it showed how good we can be.

“We are young and this is our first time down here and I think the nerves may have got us. I didn’t think we were nervous before the game and once it started you could see it. I am very proud of them. We took second in the state the first time down here and that is a great accomplishment.

We made history and now this is going to turn into our tradition.”

The Indians return all but four players next season and of the four, only Bachmann was a regular contributor.

“I think we can come back and play in front of all these fans and we know what this feels like and we don’t want to feel it again,” said Papesh, who led all players with a match-high 20 kills.

“Mother McAuley is a great team, but we are a great team too and we are bringing a lot of this greatness back. We are starting a legacy here and it starts now.”

Prosek said she thinks Bachmann left behind the right tools to help the team strive for that legacy.

“It will be sad to see Brooklyn go,” Prosek said. “She is a true leader on the court and she re-

ally wrapped herself around trying to make those other players believe in each other and not be all about themselves. The other seniors [Matti Ziech, Katie Bulger and Kamryn Johnson] didn’t play as much, but they are what made that team. They brought all the juniors together.”

Bachmann said she hopes the returning players remember her competitiveness.

“Being at state was the best feeling in the world. We felt at home here and that is why we played so well,” she said. “I hope that I left a little bit of leadership for the team. We were really young this year and they looked to me for that role and I hope I put a positive impact into their lives and that my competitiveness will yst spread into their practices and that next year they will be back

here and win it all. I think we are leaving a great legacy here. This group of girls is probably the best team that I have ever played with and I play a lot of sports, so that is saying something. They are like my sisters. I have never felt so comfortable on a team and I wouldn’t want to leave it any other way.”

Rocky Perinar tallied 12 kills for Minooka, while Bachmann posted 31 assists and 14 digs.

To get to the state title match, Minooka defeated eventual third-place winner Stevenson 2517, 25-13.

In that match, Perinar led the team with a match-high 10 kills, while Papesh and Holly Bonde had seven each. Bachmann tallied 22 assists to lead both teams and libero Taylor Baranski has 12 digs.

USF ends season Sophomore wideout Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./ Peoria) caught six passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns as the University of St. Francis football team defeated Mid-States Football Association Midwest League rival Olivet Nazarene University 37-22 in the season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon.

USF finished the season 5-6 overall and 2-3 in MSFA Midwest League play. Olivet Nazarene ended the year 4-7, 2-3 in conference action.

With his performance Saturday, Ruffin tied the USF single-season record for receiving touchdowns (12 – Troy Torrence, 2013) and became the second player in school history to sur-

pass 1,000 yards receiving in a season.

His 191 yards Saturday gave him 1,020 on the year.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Alarcon (Alsip, Ill./ Brother Rice) connected with Ruffin on a 29yard scoring strike late in the first quarter to put the Saints on top 7-3.

I never wanted it to be because someone went down, but I had faith that eventually I would have a shot to help my team. I also have a lot of family and friends that have supported me when things weren’t going the way I wanted. When I came into college, it wasn’t what I expected, obviously. It wasn’t what I was hoping for, but when I got down, I had my parents and my family that were always there for me.”

In high school, Maddie led Joliet Catholic Academy to the Class 5A championship game as a sophomore, but transferred after that season to pass-friendly Aurora Christian, where he won a state title his senior season.

That year he passed for 3,799 yards and 52 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,117 yards and 18 scores on the ground, it was

He had to sit out his first year in DeKalb because of NCAA transfer rules. In 2014, Maddie appeared in nine games as a dual-threat quarterback, where he passed for 227 yards and rushed 44 times for 201 yards with one rushing touchdown.

“He has earned the opportunity for this. He kept working and he got the opportunity and made the most of the opportunity and that is all you can ask for in life.

He will be successful down the road in whatever he chooses to do because of his work ethic.”

Maddie said giving up football was never an option for him.

“It is hard to quit and just say ‘I’m done’ when you have all

these guys that you care about and that care about you. You don’t get this anywhere else. We have 108 guys on this team and this is something special,” he said. “I have talked to my parents a lot about all of this and they said at the very least I am getting experience for what the real world is like. It is going to be tough out there.”

In fact, Maddie wanted so bad to get on the field this season, he attempted a switch to wide receiver just before the season started.”

“I was just trying to figure out a way to play. I just love football,” Maddie said. “Coach Carey and I discussed the best way to get on the field for my senior year.”

Maddie caught one pass on the season for nine yards.

While Maddie has stats in the passing, rushing and receiving game this season for the Huskies, his legacy with NIU may have been established before he got the chance to start under center.

“I hope that I can leave behind in my short time as a starter is that you will get that shot and if

you are here, you are here for a reason. A lot of these young guys may not be in the situation they want to be. It was a long four and a half years,” Maddie said.

“The main thing is you have to always have faith. I have a lot of friends that play college football and it is rarely what you hoped for. This has taught me to have faith and keep working hard and eventually you will get a shot and when you do, you have to make the most of it.”

Uremovich said Maddie’s perseverance is something young players can learn from.

“That is the hardest thing for young players. We never want them to be happy where they are at, but to be patient where they are at,” he said. “So many guys expect to come in the door and expect to play as a freshman or a sophomore and that’s great, but it doesn’t always work out that way. We just want them to keep working and they will get a chance.

“Any time a freshman or sophomore comes into the office down about playing time, we can just look to him and tell them to look at what he did.

Stores of all types hold special discount sales and promotions intended to get everyone excited about the Christmas season kickoff and get you spending like . . . well, like crazy.

So, should you decide to partake of a madness that closely resembles Times Square on New Year’s Eve multiplied by the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, what other shoppers are you up against?

HERE ARE FIVE OF THE MOST COMMON SHOPPERS YOU’LL SEE: 1. As dangerous as the Black Friday circus is, there is yet one more danger to look out for this Christmas season — shopping without a budget.

groups here. Either the one where screaming, tired kids are brought along while the parent desperately tries to find a particular item at

a bargain, or the ones with SEAL Team 6-like coordination who aim to grab all of the assigned items before heading to the extraction point (i.e. the cash register).

2. THE HOARDER It’s Black Friday, not Y2K. This person is reminiscent of the guy who felt the need to barricade himself in a bunker in the middle

of the woods with 20 years’ worth of freeze-dried chipped beef. The hoarder seems paranoid about not taking full advantage of Black Friday and attempts to grab every last one of a particular sales item.

Then after the Friday flurry subsides, they’ll either bring back all the extras they don’t need or sell them online.

2016 election, is that our future is the newborn we hold in our arms, vulnerable and dependent on us and deserving the best. I quiet my own certainties as I think about this and acknowledge that what

I don’t know is infinitely greater than what I do know, or think I do.

And the mark I will make on my ballot is so much smaller than the pledge I make right now, to work for - to nurture - peace no

matter who is elected.

4. THE ACTION SEEKERS These people are more obstruction than competition. They like the energy of being in the middle of the madness, though they may only be shopping for a DVD. They tend to stand out in the crowd because they are the only ones with a smile on their face. (But if they aren’t careful, another shopper may wipe it off for them.)

5. THE WINGER They are as off-the-cuff as a lost button. They see an item that looks like it would make a good gift, and they grab it. Boom.

Christmas shopping done. We should all be so lucky.

Elizabeth said she would find refuge in the people she kept close to her.

“Family helped a lot and other service people, service wives that were in the same situation that I was in,” she said.

Elizabeth said she’s proud looking back on both her current

spouse and her ex-husband’s stints in the military.

“Actually, I wish now that I might have joined the service branch because I see the young women that are in it now,” she said. “To have represented our country as a woman would have been such… an honor for me to served our country also.”

The hope, according to Hallihan, is that the campus community finds the ceremony to be moving.

“I think it’s important that our students get to hear those stories and learn about the importance of service and understand the sacrifices that so many people have made for the freedoms that they have,” he said.
