Students work to oppose violence, bullying Joliet Job corps center holds series of events in september for y2y week In an effort to promote peacefulness and cooperation, students at the Joliet Job Corps Center held a series of events in September for Y2Y Week.

The national program began in the spring of 2015, when a group of job corps students met during a conference held in Washington, D.C. As they discussed their concerns about youth-on-youth violence, the students decided to organize and take action to prevent violence among youths in the U.S. Y2Y stands for Youth to Youth: Partners for Peace.

The first Y2Y Week was held at Job Corps centers across the country in September 2016.

At the Joliet Job Corps Center, the theme of the events was “One Center…One Sound.” The goal of the week was to encourage unity while physically bringing people together.

On Sept. 19, Joliet Job Corps held a Memorial Vigil in the center’s Y2Y Peace Garden for lost loved ones. Students also painted the individual slats of wood-

A Sept. 21 Peace Rally brought in guest speakers from Joliet, including community activist R. Dale Evans and Darius Thomas Curtis, pastor of Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church.

The final event was about having a good time together.

On Sept. 22, a block party with games, contests and four food trucks brought students and staff together for a good time.

Senior program honored

by Illinois House rep. larry walsh Jr. sponsors resolution in illinois house The Troy Township Senior Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and the Illinois House of Representatives recently presented the group with a Certificate of Recognition to honor the significant milestone.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., DJoliet, sponsored the resolution, which he presented to the Troy Township Board Sept. 19 at the board’s monthly meeting.

The groundbreaking for what would become the Troy Township Offices and Senior Center took place in November 1984.

Construction of the facility would take most of the next year, followed by its dedication on April 20, 1986.

Planning for the program all started with recognizing a need to provide a senior center within Troy Township.

From there. the township embarked on a mission to bring the senior program to fruition. Over the years, the program has grown

Troy Township residents 60 years of age and older are invited to participate in the group every Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Troy Township Community Center, located at 25448 Seil Road in Shorewood.

As a congregate meal site for Meals on Wheels, the township provides nutritious meals, while seniors enjoy card games, bingo,

a monthly birthday celebration, and a once a month outing to a local restaurant for breakfast or lunch.

Troy Township Seniors who are interested in learning more about this program can call 815-7441963 or stop by the Troy Township Senior Open House, scheduled for Oct. 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the community center.

Joliet mayor makes choice for city council replacement city council scheduled to vote on appointment oct. 4 Brooke Hernandez Brewer is Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk’s choice to replace former Joliet City Council member Jim McFarland.

“I am honored to be considered for a position that plays such an important role in our community,” Brewer said. “By taking on this role as the first Hispanic female on the Joliet City Council, I look forward to being a strong voice for both

women and the Hispanic community, however, it is my intention to be an advocate for all Joliet residents and to be a servant of this community.”

Brewer will be present Oct. 3 at the pre-council meeting to address the city council. The vote on her appointment is scheduled to take place Oct. 4 during the regular city council meeting.

A lifelong Joliet resident, Brewer attended Pershing and St.

Paul the Apostle Grade Schools and Providence Catholic High School.

She is a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and previously taught CCD at St. John’s. She is also a member of the Women’s Loyal Order of the Moose 300 and the American Legion Post 1080.

“I anticipate Brooke will be approved by the council, and I am very excited to have her onboard,” O’Dekirk said. “We have some major issues to address on behalf of the city. Brooke’s presence on the council will assist in providing a new voice and diverse perspective on Joliet.”

District 86 school named among best in nation eisenhower academy one of only 330 Blue ribbon schools U.S. Secretary of Education John King Jr. announced last week that Eisenhower Academy has been named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School.

Eisenhower is one of the 279 public and 50 private schools receiving this honor.

Schools are nominated for the award by the state department of education and then complete a comprehensive application about school practices. Schools may apply for status as Exem-

plary High Performing—among the top schools in a state—or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing—schools making the fastest progress in their state in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Eisenhower Principal Wendy Wolgan and a teacher will represent Eisenhower Academy at a two-day awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., Nov. 7-8 to celebrate their hard-won achievements. A community school celebration is scheduled at Eisenhower Nov. 16.

“I am so proud of the students and staff at Eisenhower for receiving this prestigious award,” said Theresa Rouse, superintendent for Joliet Public Schools District 86. “The teachers, students and

parents work very closely to support learning through the school year.”

Eisenhower Academy is one of two magnet programs within Joliet Public Schools District 86.

Eisenhower, recently ranked by the Chicago Magazine as the top elementary school in Will County, is home to 261 students in grades first through fifth grade. Students are accepted into the school who demonstrate average or above academic achievement and positive behavior. In addition, parents must commit to the school’s philosophy, including the Four-Way Learning Agreement.

JTHS orchestra director recognized peter lipari recognized by vandercook college of music Joliet Township High School Orchestra Director Peter Lipari was recently recognized by VanderCook College of Music for his influence on the next generation of music educators.

Lipari is the conductor of the JTHS Strings, Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia.

A JTHS alumna and former student of Lipari nominated her former teacher for the recognition. Jenna DiSandro said Lipari is a teacher who greatly impacted her life.

In a letter to Lipari, VanderCook College of Music President Charles Menghini thanked the teacher for his support of DiSandro and the inspiration he provides to all of his students.

“VanderCook College of Music, being the only institution in the nation solely devoted to music education, holds your work as a music teacher in its highest regard,” Menghini wrote.

VanderCook College of Music is the only institution in the U.S. that focuses exclusively on music teacher education and was one of the three original institutions to offer such a degree in instrumental music teacher education in 1928. The school is located in Chicago.

Anything Can Be viewers need to support inclusion in mainstream media

BY DaniEl smROkOWski BUGlE COlUmnisT This is a time to celebrate the lives of those diagnosed with Down syndrome. It is a time to celebrate the acceptance and inclusion of people with special needs. In the media, whether on film, television, radio or podcast, people with Down syndrome are rarely seen, and, if they are, they are not usually portrayed in a positive light.

These days, however, the inclusion of people with Down syndrome in the media is beginning to change for the better.

A year ago, I had the opportunity to screen the award-winning documentary film “Kelly’s Hollywood.” Brian Donovan, a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, produced this film. It presents the intimate, honest and raw story of a brother’s quest to fulfill the dream of his sister with special needs of becoming a Hollywood diva.

Brian’s quest to fulfill his sister Kelly’s dream takes an unexpected turn when it begins to threaten his engagement with his fiancée. As Kelly begins

to feel increasingly jealous of Brian’s fiancée, her health starts to fail. Brian is then forced to confront his sibling’s co-dependency issues. Brian struggles to find balance between fulfilling Kelly’s wish of performing in Hollywood and his own dream of getting married. Viewers learn that anything is possible. Anything can be.

This film has received many glowing reviews. Actress and Saturday Night Live star Molly Shannon proclaimed, “I just loved this documentary! It is so full of heart. I laughed. I cried. It was absolutely riveting.”

This past April 30, 2016, I was given the chance to co-host the Chicagoarea premiere of “Kelly’s Hollywood.”

The intimate screening was held at the Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove.

The event was co-sponsored by Community High School District 99, Westmont Community Unit School District 201, SEASPAR, Special Olym-

pics Illinois, and Special Chronicles.

Approximately 50 people were in attendance.

Directly following the screening, filmmaker Brian Donovan hosted an informal question and answer session with the audience. Readers can hear the live Q&A in its entirety at www.specialchronicles.com.

One attendee to this premiere was Katie Driscoll, the founder and president of Changing The Face of Beauty – a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that is literally changing the way people with special needs are seen in the media. Katie is partnering with advertisers and companies to host photo shoots for people with special needs. At the Chicago Premiere of “Kelly’s Hollywood,” she said that at the time Brian was filming his sister Kelly, he did not have as much access to mobile devices as one would today. That is one reason this film was unique in its creation. Brian went to great lengths to give viewers a chance to bear witness to the joy and love that his sister Kelly brought to the world.

I loved the intimate look of his film.

I enjoyed the fact that viewers got to see both the joyous and challenging moments in the story. As I watched this film, I felt as if I were a “fly on the wall,” experiencing Kelly’s longtime dream of becoming a Hollywood diva.

Bertino-Tarrant choice for Senate

‘now, more than ever, we need to continue to elect commonsense legislators’

As president of the Joliet Firefighters Local 44, I represent over 150 firefighters and paramedics who put their lives on the line everyday to keep our community safe.

Our organization works on behalf of its members to ensure fair and safe working conditions, a livable wage, and an absence of workplace discrimination. We work to negotiate our contracts with honesty, integrity and with respect to budgetary concerns.

So, I was surprised to see a recent political ad attacking Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant for protecting our right to collectively bargain, especially since the benefits of such extend far beyond union organizations. Issues important

to working people such as sick leave, overtime pay, social security, unemployment, workers compensation, workplace safety standards, family leave, medical leave, minimum wage, structured workdays and the weekend many non-union workers enjoy, are all the result of union collective-bargaining efforts.

One only needs to look at her opponent’s record as Plainfield District 202 School Board President to understand why she would attack the right to collectively bargain in a negative political ad.

Michelle Smith has tried to outsource hundreds of custodial staff – most from right here in our community - in order to force layoffs, and reduce salaries and sick leave.

This comes after repeatedly voting to give pay raises to school administrators and five-straight years of property

tax increases.

Recently on behalf of hundreds of firefighters throughout the 49th Senate District, the Joliet Firefighters Local 44 and the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois endorsed Jennifer BertinoTarrant for a second term in the Illinois Senate.

In the short time since Jennifer took office, she has encouraged small business growth, improved public safety, increased education funding and taken on special interests in Springfield to protect our communities.

She also supports our right to collectively bargain.

After winning its last two games and holding a 3-2 record heading to Plainfield Central, Joliet West knew it needed to keep the winning ways going in order to lock up its place in the IHSA playoffs.

With four games left, the Tigers need two wins to be playoff eligible, but want as many as possible.

They were able to overcome some early game mistakes and keep the Wildcats winless on a rainy homecoming Saturday with a 20-6 win.

“The weather did affect us in the beginning, we are not really used to that,” said West’s Ezekiel Tulloch. “But, after we got the tempo going and we got in a rhythm, we showed what we could really do except the penalties shot us in the foot sometimes.”

Soccer is becoming a powerhouse sport in Minooka.

After the girls soccer team had one of its best seasons in program history in the spring, the boys have followed that up in the fall with an 11-3 start.

“We have athletic kids who are talented and they know what to do,” Minooka coach Chris Brolley said. “They have the skill and the talent and it is fun to work with.

Our chemistry has been huge and that goes a long way with high school kids. It is fun. The senior leaders are doing really well.”

“I’ve been playing since freshman year and this is the best start I’ve ever had,” Minooka senior Kyle Sparks said. “I’m glad because this is my senior year and I want to go out strong.”

That chemistry, which Brolley, who is also the girls coach noted, was strong during the girls season as well, has made a big difference this year for the boys.

“I think it has been our bond with our teammates,” Sparks said

of the reason for their success.

“We’re all close and willing to work hard for each other.”

The chemistry and strong play has led to the No. 3 seed in the Peoria Notre Dame Sectional.

“It is a good seed for us,” Brolley said. “We got a lot of respect in that sectional. There are a lot of good teams and we are going to have to prove ourselves.”

Proving themselves would include bringing home some hardware. That process begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Moline Regional against No. 6 Moline.

A win puts them in the regional championship at 5 p.m. Oct. 21, likely against No. 2 Normal.

“We want to get a sectional title.

We need to practice hard every day,” Sparks said.

The defensive side of the ball appears to be the key to the Indians’ postseason success.

“We need to limit giving up goals, so we need to work on the defensive side,” Brolley said. “We still don’t have everyone healthy and have been mixing things up.

After a 4-1 start to the season, the Lockport football team was looking to earn its fifth win of the season, become playoff eligible as well as do something it has not done in more than 20 years – beat Bolingbrook for two consecutive seasons.

While the Porters put up a good fight, however, in the end lost the game 27-22.

“We had a 14 point swing there in the third quarter,” said Lockport coach Dan Starkey. “We get a big interception and a big return and what happens? We lost it on downs and let them score and

that was the ballgame. We had all the momentum in the world, we just couldn’t put them away on our own field.

“I am, proud of our kids’ efforts. We just didn’t play very well tonight on offense or defense and our kickoff coverage wasn’t very good either.”

Bolingbrook surpassed 300 yards rushing with eight running backs.

“They cut the ball back on us tonight and we knew we had to tackle better and we left a lot of plays on the field offensively,” Starkey said.

The Porters were paced offensively by Austin Hoffman, who tallied 75 yards on seven catches, grabbing a pair of Ben Davis

touchdown passes.

John Savage, who got the start at running back because of injury and ineligibility, ran for 107 yards on 31 carries.

The Tigers now need at least one more win to secure a playoff spot for the second time in school

“With this conference, if we get five wins, we should have 40 points. I want six wins, I want seven, but, yeah we are sitting in a good spot,” Jason Aubrey said.

“We are happy with the W, but we are not satisfied with the way we played.”

“I was coming in off of a suspension, so I wanted to come in and play hard,” Sparks said. “I had to miss the first half, so I came in and had to play hard so we can get this conference win.”

In fulfilling his sister’s dream, Brian was breaking down barriers for Kelly, but also breaking new ground in the film industry.

Fast forward to today, individuals with Down syndrome are now being included in mainstream media. Today, people with special needs are able to “play unified,” a term that was recently coined by Special Olympics to include people with and without intellectual differences.

The ever-popular reality docuseries “Born This Way,” airing on the A&E network, is a perfect example of inclusion in mass media. This show follows the lives of seven young adults with Down

syndrome. This past month “Born This Way” rightly earned its first Emmy award. And, this past week, it wrapped up season two and got picked up for a third season. Viewers are able to see the cast is made up of young adults with the same hopes, dreams and fears, in addition to those who are not diagnosed with special needs. Four of the young women — Megan, Cristina, Elena and Rachel — featured on the show are even becoming Hollywood divas in their own right.

Another recent television show that many in the disability community are talking about is “Speechless.” This is a new sitcom airing on the ABC network that tells the story of a family whose eldest son has cerebral palsy. “Speechless” is breaking ground by being one of the first television shows on a mainstream broadcast network

featuring an actor with special needs in a lead role.

We, as viewers, need to support inclusion in the mainstream media on shows like “Born This Way” and “Speechless” or on films such as “Kelly’s Hollywood.”

Join me and let’s change the game for the inclusion of those with special needs in the mainstream media. Let’s make dreams come true.

WHy SAVE BEFOrE PAyING OFF THE MOrTGAGE? DEaR DavE, I just read The Total Money Makeover, but I’m still unclear as to why you recommend saving for an emergency fund and retirement before paying off your home.

Shouldn’t a house be paid off as quickly as possible, since it’s a liability? maRk DEaR maRk, I appreciate the fact that you’re asking questions and thinking things through. But please don’t fall into the trap of thinking of your home as a liability. That mindset is way off base, in my opinion.

Your house is definitely an asset; it’s the mortgage that’s a liability.

Some folks may try to position a

house as a liability simply because it costs you money. But the truth is your home will make you more money than it will cost you over time. Therefore, it is an asset.

Some of the saddest situations I’ve seen in all my years of teaching are seniors who have paid-for homes and nothing saved or invested. Money isn’t the most important thing on earth, but it is a fact of life. That’s why I encourage people to build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses and begin saving for retirement before they tackle paying off their homes.

Then, after all that is addressed, take every dollar you can scrape together and put it toward paying off your mortgage as fast as possible.

Threatening skies stayed clear long enough for the more than 150 people gathered outside the Bolingbrook Golf Club Sept. 28 to let their voices be heard.

Supporters and critics of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gathered to let the embattled head of the GOP know how they felt about his presence in Bolingbrook, which was due to a brief but profitable private fundraising event sponsored by Mayor Roger Claar.

Among shouts of “No Trump, No Way” and a handful of tense but, ultimately, peaceful confrontations between pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators, the crowd waved signs and flags showing why they thought Trump is either the best, or

worst, person for the job.

Jo, a vocal supporter of Trump, had some strong words for critics of Hispanic descent. The Chicago resident, who declined to give her last name, parroted Trump’s claim that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is simply using Hispanics for their votes.

“Once they get their vote their going to get dumped, just like the African Americans have always been dumped,” Jo said. “That’s why we’re standing up and telling them the truth. The Democrats have bought all you people.”

But Eduardo, a Mexican immigrant who was brought to the U.S. as a child and attended Bolingbrook High School, said the views from the right on Mexicans and others Latinos is skewed, if not flat wrong.

“They call us illegals, they call us immigrants, they say we’re not from this country, and they call us drug dealers and rapists,”

said Eduardo, who also declined to give his last name. “I have a daughter, I work, I make my money, I’ve never been to jail, I’ve never sold any drugs, nothing like that. I’m not racist, Trump tries to make us look like violent people, and I’m just trying to say that we’re not.”

Some cooler heads were among those in the crowd, as well. They were trying to talk common sense to the other side.

Holding a sign that read “Married. White. Business Owners. The only demographic not yet targeted by Trump’s hate,” Bolingbrook resident Joe Giamanco said he was offended by the candidate’s rhetoric.

“I’m an attorney, and when I see injustice I have a real problem with it,” he said. “Everything I see that comes out of Trump has been an attack on pretty much everybody but ‘me’ so far. It’s not right and it needs to stop.

“I fear at this point that a lot of those folks, no matter what you say to them, no matter what you tell them, no matter what comes

out of Trump’s mouth, it won’t make a difference,” Giamanco added. “They put such blinders on, they’re blind to it all.”

Others at the rally criticized the Bolingbrook mayor’s support of Trump.

Patti Droogan was born and raised in Bolingbrook, and said she and other area residents organized the group Suburban Families Against Hate as soon as they heard about the fundraiser.

“We are very disappointed in our mayor because he has insulted this entire community,” she said. “It’s very disappointing because this is supposed to be a community that encompasses everybody, and he’s inviting somebody into this town that has insulted our Muslim brothers and sisters, that has insulted our black brothers and sisters, that has insulted women… So, it speaks volumes to Mayor Claar’s character.”

But, Trump also drew minority support at the event, as some black and Hispanic demonstrators stood up for their candidate.

“We want to break the stereotypes,” said Alexander Rodriguez, of Joliet. “The narrative says that if you’re a minority, if you’re young you should be voting for Hillary and be part of the Democratic Party, and it’s just not true.

Rodriguez said he attended the demonstration to show Trump that he’s welcome in Illinois.

“I’m young, I’m of Hispanic decent, but I proudly support the Republican party, and I proudly support Mr. Trump,” he said.

Inside the event, the air was electric, according to a handful of individuals who attended the fundraiser and joined demonstrators after its conclusion.

David Diersen of the online publication GOPUSA said Mayor Rudi Giuliani spoke during the event, but added that he was even more impressed by Trump himself.

The fundraiser pulled in a reported $1.5 million for Trump’s campaign. For those who made their way inside, tickets reportedly cost between $1,000 and $250,000 per person.
