New LED program to create savings Council approves purchase contracts for street luminaries

Joliet is looking to save money by tackling an LED streetlight project that will lower the cost of lighting city streets.

In a unanimous vote, the Joliet City Council approved Phase I and II to purchase contracts for street luminaries.

“The biggest improvement for the city is it’s going to reduce the monthly cost that we pay on electrical,” said City Manager Jim Hock. “The life (of a bulb) is 20 to 25 years so our electricians aren’t going to be out there repairing and replacing bulbs as much; they can work on other things.”

Public Works Director Jim Trizna tried to explain further.

“Basically, most of these major lights we’re doing with the LED program right now, we’re going from 400-watt high pressure sodium bulb to 174-watt LED bulb,” he said “That’s where you’re getting your big electricity reduction.”

Hock said the city’s electricians have worked diligently on this project.

“Our staff is going up and down Essington Road right now,” he said. “But they are too busy to do the installation… We’re hiring our electrical contractor, that we have, do most of the work that our electricians can’t do. That labor is part of the grant, as well.”

The city has other street light replacement projects for other parts

of town, including Collins Street.

That effort includes new lighting poles and LED lighting fixtures and is expected to begin toward the summer’s end.

Councilwoman Brooke Hernadez Brewer said she wanted it to be clear that Joliet’s plan to improve streetlights is multi-layered, and city officials have not forgotten about the east side of town.

“To reiterate, this map is only showing we said east but it’s not actually going to the actual east side,” she said. “This is other phases that we’re going to see continue to go further east. I know Collins Street was not part of that. It’s actually part a different program.

There is more to be seen.”

To this, Public Works Director Jim Trizna sought to lessen concerns people may hold.

“There’s numerous streets from the middle of town to the east side of town that we still need to do lights on, and that’ll be another phase,” he said. “If we’re fortunate enough and get our incentive money back maybe in July, if this program is still as sweet as I like to say, or as good as a deal… we may be able to turn around and do another yet this fall and winter.

If not, we’ll keep looking for grants for that one.”

But when it comes to the state route, that’s a different story, Trizna said.

“IDOT has very high requirements and they may have us go back into looking at spacing of the existing lights, we may have to use a little bit higher wattage bulb,” he

Hernandez Brewer said she knows city staff is working hard to make sure improvements are made all across town.

“I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew it’s intended that everyone get taken care of,” she said.

Hug gave credit to city staff for pushing up phase I and II engineering for the LED program.

“The long and the short it, if we do it by May instead of getting 50 percent reimbursed on that program, we’re going to get 88 percent reimbursed,” he said. “We’re going to pay 12 percent for the total project—a lot of savings on the money. There’s over 600 LED lights going up in phase I and II. We finished up another phase from last year. This is phase I and II of this year.”

Mayor Bob O’DeKirk said awarding the contracts for the purchase of streetlight luminaries will greatly benefit the city.

“I know when I came into office we pushed hard about increasing the grants that we apply for, and again we’re starting to the see the results of that,” he said.

Hock agreed.

“This came along all of a sudden

because surprisingly, other cities weren’t taking advantage of [the grant opportunity],” he said. “So, they increased the percentage to those who were willing to step up with their share. It’s really going to significantly decrease the cost of the project as well as get this done about a year and a half early.”

Hug tried to explain further.

“When we say that our staff can’t do [it’s] because we have a compressed time frame of May to get it done,” Hug said. “If we don’t, then we only get 50 percent back.

So, actually by subcontracting it out, we save money by getting 88 percent.”

The Joliet City Council hired a project manager for its Houbolt Road interchange project.

In reviewing four consultants, Joliet officials determined that T.Y. Lin International is the best qualified.

The project manager is responsible for coordinating with governmental agencies, utilities, and stakeholders as well as reviewing the services of the phase I and II design engineer.

IDOT is providing $2.1 million out of $21 million that can be used to cover this new cost.

HOSPITAL-AREA TIF DISTRICT OK’D To ensure that necessary ordinances are implemented for the TIF District in Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center area, the Joliet Council approved a series of measures to achieve this aim.

In a unanimous vote, city officials took action to put the redevelopment tool that freezes property taxes to generate new dollars to use.

Joliet officials have been working to establish a TIF District in hospital area since 2014.

The city said this economic development tool has the ability to stabilize the immediate neighborhood and encourage redevelopment.

The Joliet City Council recently approved a professional services agreement for the 2017-19 utilities GIS mapping program.

The city said they, in recent years, have a growing focus on utilizing mobile devices and cloudbased software to facilitate access to maps and data from the field.

Joliet officials reviewed three bids and will award the contract in the amount of $101,104.50 to the lowest bidder, Robert E. Hamilton Counseling.

The city said a growing reliance on GIS applications will crucial in moving forward as new development and Joliet construction projects occur.

Resident Kimberly Garrett is a big advocate for the ‘smart laugh’

Joliet resident Kimberly Garrett is a big advocate for the “smart laugh.” So, when an opportunity arose after her contract with Second City ended allowing her not only to write, but also direct her first full play, she said everything fell into place.

“As my faith grew, I felt no desire to say the types of things and make the kinds of jokes that they wanted to me to say and make,”

she said. “So, I did not renew my contract and I left the theater. I was a little bit nervous about that because this is what I do, I perform. Now I’m stepping away, but taking that step on faith—calls started coming in asking me to perform stand up.”

Garrett has performed in a number of shows and movies around the world since that time.

On Jan. 21, Bicentennial Park Theatre showcased Garrett’s “Locked In,” a comedy with music about five fictional characters who find themselves locked in-

side a church revealing shameful secrets, past hurts, quirky personalities and pet peeves.

The idea behind the production came to her one day after church last year, Garrett said.

Garrett, noting that she’s always been a “big fan” of the behind the scenes experience, said she found something fascinating in the way people may meet and greet before church.

Garrett is a Christian comedian who belongs to True Deliverance Apostolic Ministries in Plainfield.

She said her own personal experience with faith plays a crucial part in her work.

Garrett said her father who was diagnosed with stage-four cancer

fell ill and faced an emergency type situation in which doctors felt he wouldn’t make it.

But that wasn’t God’s plan, Garrett said.

“He didn’t know why we were in the hospital,” she said. “He didn’t know who was sick. He wanted to know if this was a joke. Why is he wearing this robe?”

When Garrett learned that her father had been suddenly healed, she said she found refuge in following her faith.

Finding the right cast “It was crucial to select the right cast,” Garrett said. “At one point, each one of us will step out of our character to talk about something really true to us. Each one of us tells a story that’s different from the next. I have one woman whose escaped an abusive relationship and she over came it. I have a woman who had gone to church and been hurt. I don’t want people to think nothing bad will happen if you go to church.”

Garrett added that despite common misconceptions people may hold, everyone’s spiritual journey is different and will stretch an individual for the better.

“Locked In” returns for another run at 4 p.m. Feb. 19 at Bicentennial Park Theatre.

Garrett said though spectators can expect to see much of the same cast when the production returns to Joliet, she wrote the play in a way that allows for some flexibility.

“I specifically wrote the play so if a cast member has to leave when someone steps in, they

bring their own story to the play, which has the potential to touch the lives of others,” she said.

Garrett said the play is hoped to please.

“It is my heart’s great desire to touch the ears and tickle the funny bones of good people and that’s basically everyone,” she said.

Hospitals penalized for harming patients Government has penalized hospitals in an effort to prevent avoidable patient deaths in hospitals Anyone facing a hospital stay for themselves or a family member should look at new data the government released right before Christmas showing that it http://khn.org/news/769-hospitals-penalized-for-patient-safety-in2017-data-table/ penalized 769 of the nation’s hospitals for having high rates of patient injuries. The monetary penalties – a reduction for the year in their reimbursement for treating Medicare patients – do bite. Larger teaching hospitals could lose as much as $1 million or more.

This is the third year the government has penalized hospitals in an effort to prevent avoidable patient deaths in hospitals, which emerged as a big issue about 18 years ago. This year the government added injuries caused by MRSA and C diff infections to their list of other harmful conditions patients contract in a hospital such as urinary tract and surgical site infections resulting from hysterectomies and colon procedures. MRSA – a staphylococcus bacterium - can cause pneumonia and bloodstream infections. C diff is a germ that can multiply in the gut when patients are taking other antibiotics to kill other germs.

While some facilities like those serving children and psychiatric patients and critical care hospitals are exempt from penalties, this year’s data show that more than 200 facilities, including some of the nation’s most well-known hospitals, have the dubious distinction of being on the government’s penalty list for all three years. They include the Cleveland Clinic, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Boston’s Brigham and Women’s

Hospital. The message for patients: A hospital’s TV advertising campaign for its great cancer care may obscure significant safety issues.

Have penalties and other harm reduction initiatives made hospital care safer?

This time 347 hospitals penalized last year are not on the bad-guy list, which shows that some are paying attention.

But hospital injuries have not vanished.

The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality says there were 3.8 million hospital injuries last year. That translates to 115 injuries per 1,000 patient stays.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria infect some two million people annually. One quarter of a million cases occur in hospitals.

I wanted to know why more progress hasn’t been made. While the new government data reflect improvements at many hospitals, why is there still such a long way to go? I rang up Lisa McGiffert, the head of Consumers Union’s Safe Patient Project who has been a leading voice since 2004 to bring attention to infections and medical errors. She told me there’s been a significant shift in the way hospitals view infections. Twelve years ago they used to say they were not preventable. “Now, most people in healthcare believe most infections are.”

In the early days of her campaign, government agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were reluctant to back public reporting of hospital mistakes and other data to help patients. Now they support it. Still,

she says, “what I am most frustrated about is the lack of urgency in the country and at the agencies for eliminating these infections. They are aware of them, but there’s not a sense of urgency to stop them.”

The financial penalties levied by the Medicare agency have made a significant difference because they get the hospital CEO’s attention. Unless the CEO is involved, change is not going to happen.

But the penalties along with the entire program to eliminate hospital-acquired conditions were authorized under the Affordable Care Act. They could be in jeopardy if the law is repealed. Some hospitals probably would be happy if they disappeared.

Patients need to make use of the data that is available and study it to inform their decisions about where to go for care when they have a choice. McGiffert advises looking at how your hospital compares to similar facilities. Look for improvement. If a hospital was penalized the first or second year of the program but not this year, that indicates it could be serious about safety. Also look to see if a facility’s scores are moving in the right direction. If the numbers show they are not performing as well on some dimension as they previously were, patients need to ask why.

Some states and some hospitals are using other strategies. Illinois and California, for example, have passed legislation that requires hospitals to screen for MRSA when patients are admitted.

Some hospitals have stewardship programs to address the overuse of antibiotics, which contributes to drug resistance.

To start learning about your hospital, consult the government’s Hospital Compare website https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search. html. Follow the prompts to find the hospital you are looking for and then search the tabs for “complications.” This will let you look at actual numbers to help you see how your hospital is doing.

Sailor continues 75 years of tradition For the past 75 years Seabees have served in all American conflicts “We Build, We Fight” has been the motto of the U. S. Navy’s Construction Force, known as the “Seabees,” for the past 75 years. Crest Hill native and Joliet Central High School graduate, Yeoman Jasmine Hawkins, builds and fights around the world as a member of a naval construction battalion center located in Port Hueneme, Calif.

“I’m an administrative assistant in the Navy, so I manage our leader’s schedule and help keep the command informed about what’s coming up,” said Hawkins.

The jobs of some of the Seabees today have remained unchanged since World War II, when the Seabees paved the 10,000-mile road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in Europe, according to Lara Godbille, director of the U. S. Navy Seabee Museum.

“I enjoyed my deployment, espe-

cially Japan because it’s a beautiful location,” said Hawkins.

For the past 75 years Seabees have served in all American conflicts. They have also supported humanitarian efforts using their construction skills to help communities around the world following earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.

“I am proud of the hard work that Seabees do every day,” said Rear Adm. Bret Muilenburg, commander, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. “Their support to the Navy and Marine Corps mission is immeasurable, and we look forward to the next seven decades of service.”

Seabees around the world will take part in a yearlong celebration in 2017 to commemorate the group’s 75-year anniversary. The theme of the celebration is “Built

on History, Constructing the Future.”

“Seabees deploy around the world providing expert expeditionary construction support on land and under the sea, for the Navy and Marine Corps, in war, humanitarian crisis and peace,” said Capt.

Serving in the U.S. Navy has allowed Hawkins to continue learning about herself and the legacy she wants to leave to future Seabees.

“I’m glad to be part of the Seabee tradition, especially the 75 year anniversary,” said Hawkins.

Steelmen learn a lot from a loss to undefeated Bolingbrook in the final minutes of action

After a thrilling game last week at Bolingbrook, Joliet Central found itself on the losing end of 60-55 loss at the hands of the undefeated Raiders.

After the game veteran coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr. — who is in his first season at Central — addressed his team right on the floor and did not wait until they were in the lockerroom.

“They are upset because we lost the game and they think they lost the game in the last minute,” Thompson said. “We lost in the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Anytime you have a turnover that leads to an immediate basket, it has something to do with the game.

“I don’t want them looking at each other thinking its (someone else’s) fault, because it’s not.

I told them when we lose like that, they have to go up and give the guy a hug. If you are upset it looks like you are upset with one person. They can say ‘it’s not,’ but that is what it looks like.”

The Steelmen were upset because they had Bolingbrook on the ropes most of the game.

Central (15-3, 7-1) started out slow and the Raiders got out to a 12-45 lead, but after Central fought back, it controlled the majority of

the game.

“We didn’t play very well in the start. We thought we could guard them man-to-man, but we can’t,” Thompson said.

“I give my kids all kinds of credit fighting back after we went to the zone, but Bolingbrook is a great basketball team, they are well coached and they share the ball well. They bring pressure and they stay after it and our guys got a little nervous.”

It was Bolingbrook’s pressure defense that rattled the Steelmen and led to a 7-0 run off of four straight turnovers to close out the game.

“We had a hard time getting the ball (over half cort) Thompson said. “Maybe it was their quickness, maybe they were hit on the handm but this is a man’s game and if you are going to play one of the top teams in the state you have to hold onto the basketball.”

Despite the loss, Thompson knows the team is better for playing the Raiders close.

“Just to be in the game was a moral victory,” he said. “I know in my heart that these guys are going to stick together and we are going to get better because of situations than this.”

Jose Grubbs led Joliet with 14 points, while Cameron Blackmon (13), Don Joachim (12) and Jojo McNair (11) were in double figures.

Central then bounced back with a 62-42 win over Plainfield Central.

Bachmann’s 26 helps Minooka past East

With the seconds ticking down at the end of the first quarter, Brooklyn Bachmann knocked the ball free and started to race downcourt toward the opposite basket.

But using her senses, that have been on display through four years of varsity play, the Minooka senior guard just knew that there wasn’t quite enough time to take that last dribble for a layup.

So instead she just scooped the ball up underhanded when she was still perhaps eight feet away.

The ball arched in the air as the buzzer went off and then settled right through for two of Bachmann’s game-high 26 points.

It also showed how she can do it all, from scoring to sensing to rebounding.

And in the end her team had a big girls basketball victory too. That was by the score of 56-44 over Plainfield East on Friday, Jan. 20 in a Southwest Prairie Conference matchup in Minooka.

Bachmann, who added 10 rebounds in the game, was the only player who scored in double digits for the Indians (17-3, 8-1). Junior post player Olivia Jenkins (15 points, 12 rebounds) led Plainfield East (17-6, 6-3).

“It helps a lot to have Brooklyn out there,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “She can do some pretty magical things with the basketball.”

The highlight reel one was the steal and basket that ended the first quarter. On the play Bachmann displayed a sort of “spidey sense.”

“As soon as I tapped it out I saw the scoreboard and there

were three seconds left,” Bachmann said of the start of the play. “As I got close I just sensed I wouldn’t have enough time, so I sort of threw [the ball] up and it went in. I didn’t see the clock, I just sensed it.”

The shot capped an 11-4 burst that ended the first quarter and put the Indians, who never trailed in the game, ahead for good at 15-8 at the end of the quarter. Bachmann had seven points in the spurt and also seemed to draw off her experience from guiding the Indians to a state runner-up finish in the Class 4A volleyball season on the final play of the quarter.

“I think that helps,” she said of being a setter on the volleyball team and transferring that to being a guard on the basketball team. “In volleyball I have to read out of the corner of my eye where the players are and the

same on the court in basketball.”

To start the second quarter, Bachmann scored Minooka’s first five points to extend the lead to 20-12. Trailing 21-13 midway through the quarter, the Bengals had a 10-4 stretch to draw within 25-23 on a 3-pointer by junior point guard Ashley Smoldt (13 points, 6 rebounds) with 37 seconds left in the first half. Minooka led 26-23 at halftime.

Smoldt missed the first meeting between the two teams this season, a 54-47 Indians victory on Dec. 13, with an injury. The Bengals were hoping having her back in the lineup would make a difference, but they couldn’t overcome their mistakes, which included 24 turnovers.

“We’d make a play and then make an error,” Plainfield East coach Tony Waznonis said. “Being a solid team, we’re better

than that. We need to get back on defense and we have to do that on a consistent basis. We also had a bunch of offensive rebounds (12), but we couldn’t always put them back in.”

The third quarter brought more Bachmann highlights. It opened with Brooklyn passing to her younger sister, sophomore guard Cierra Bachmann (8 points, 4 rebounds), for a layup. Jenkins responded with a jumper to make it 28-25, but Cierra Bachmann hit a 3-pointer and her older sister added seven more points in a 15-6 burst that gave Minooka a 43-31 lead with 29 seconds left in the quarter.

The Indians led 43-33 at the end of three.

Free throw woes plague Tigers in loss

In a 2017 “when sides collide” boys basketball shootout at Glenbard East, the shootout people set up a clash between two of the top 10 schools in the latest Associated Press Illinois state basketball rankings. The No. 6-ranked Tigers from the West Side of Joliet, took on the No.8- ranked Whitney Young Dolphins, from the West Side, of Chicago.

Joliet West (17-2) trailing by as much as 18 points in the first half, capped off a furious rally, taking the lead 57-56, on junior Eddie Creal’s put-back basket, with 4:49 left in the game.

Whitney Young (14-4), would retake the lead at the 4:21 mark but Wests’ 6-foot-6 Tabyous Casterberry’s (13 points, 8 rebounds), put-back basket, regained the lead for the Tigers at 59-58, with 3:52 left in the game.

Over the next three minutes, the Tigers would not score again, missing seven consecutive free throws, as Young would go on a 10-0 run and go on to win 7364. The Tigers would miss their last 11 free throws of the contest and overall shoot a woeful 14 of 40, at the charity stripe, for the game. A belated Christmas gift from the West Side of Joliet to the West Side of Chicago.

“We certainly know where we lost the game today,” Joliet West head coach Nick DiForti said.

“We practice free-throws, pressure free throws, free-throws in every possible situation, in practice everyday. We just couldn’t make anything, today.”

The less said about the first half of the game, the better. The Tigers shot 7 of 28 from the floor and 7 for 16 from the line and trailed 36-21.

Casterberry ignited the Tiger comeback, scoring six straight points to start the third quarter.

Trevian Bell, who was the one bright spot, in the first half, scoring 10 first quarter points, added five points in the third quarter.

Teyvion Kirk would score five of his 12 points in the third quarter, pulling the Tigers within 5346 after three quarters.

“Tabyous (Casterberry) really ignited our comeback, at the start of the third quarter,” DiForti added. “We really concentrated on going to him and he came through for us. I am very proud of the way we battled back against one of the best teams in the state.”

“I really had to get us going at the start of the third quarter,” Casterberry said. “My game is to get offensive rebounds and score.”

Bell took home game-scoring honors, with 19 points and would haul down five rebounds.

Creal had a fine over-all game with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“Free-throw shooting and lack of, is a contagious thing,” Bell said. “Once someone starts missing, it becomes contagious and we all just couldn’t make any. We should have won this game. We showed how good we can be by the way we came back against Young. We have another big test at undefeated Bolingbrook and must get out of there with a win.”

Saints remain perfect at 20-0 Four Saints scored in double figures as the top-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team improved to 20-0 with a 73-46 win over host Trinity International University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.

With the win, USF (13-0 CCAC) joined Mississippi State University (NCAA Division I) and LewisClark State College (NAIA Division I) as the only 20-0 teams in college women’s basketball this season.

USF outscored the Trojans 15-2 during the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a 23-12 lead. The Saints expanded their advantage to 42-21 by halftime and remained on top by at least 30 points for all but the final two minutes of the second half.

Brooklyn Bachmann added five more points to open the fourth quarter as the Indians put the game away with a 7-0 run and led 50-33 midway through the period. The Bengals sprung to life and scored eight points in just over a minute to pull to 51-41 on a 3-pointer by Smoldt with 1:55 to play in the game. But it was too little too late as they never got closer.

“We’ve played each other a lot and it’s more of a grind it out type of game,” Liberatore said of the matchup. “I’m happy with the way we defended

in the second half.”

Senior center Abigail Holloway (6 points) and sophomore center Savannah Johnson (6 points, 6 rebounds) also contributed for Minooka. Junior guard Kennedy Collins (7 points, 10 rebounds) did the same for the Bengals before fouling out with 2:33 to play in the game.

It may not be the last meeting between the two teams as both are in the Class 4A Aurora East Sectional, along with every other Southwest Prairie team. So is perennial power Bolingbrook and 2-time defending Class 4A state champion, Benet Academy.

“Any one of eight teams in the sectional could win a regional title,” Waznonis said. “[Going forward] the key for us is to be more consistent and not let our emotions get the best of us.”

Being direct and upfront is not being mean DEAR DAVE, My friend and I are roommates, and we’ve always had an agreement that we split each of the bills 50-50. We both work and have decent jobs, but for the last couple of months she’s been really late in paying her half of the bills. She says she’s broke. I don’t want to be mean, but how can I approach her about this situation?

ALICE DEAR ALICE, I understand that you don’t want to be mean to a friend, but situations like this should be addressed quickly and directly. No matter whether you’re talking about friendships or business dealings, to be unclear is to be unkind.

Turn off the television, sit down with her, and have a kind but firm conversation. Let her know that the roommate agreement is no longer working because she isn’t paying her bills on time. Make sure she understands that the two of you are not going to be able to stay there together anymore unless she starts paying on time. You might also ask if she needs help budgeting her money. I mean, if she’s got a good job her money has to be going somewhere, right? The problem is that it’s not going to the proper places.

I know you think that by being subtle or avoiding the situation you’re being nice, but you’re not.

You’re being passive-aggressive.

You just have to smile and say, “This isn’t going to happen anymore. You’re going to get your act together, and I’ll help you all I can, but you need to start paying on time or the roommate situation is over.”

Is that tough love? No, it’s just love.

could have the house paid off in just over four years. She likes the idea of having lots of money saved up, but I would love to be completely debt-free. Should we pay off the house or hang on to the savings?

JASON DEAR JASON, Let’s pretend your house is already paid for in full. Would you borrow on your home so that you had enough cash that your wife liked it? You say you wouldn’t, so what’s the difference? If you had a paid-for house and you wouldn’t borrow on it to have cash laying around to feel

better, why wouldn’t you use the cash laying around to pay off the house? It’s the same thing.

The first thing you want to consider is having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. You also need to make sure you’re putting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement. Other than that, if you have enough cash laying around to pay off your home and you don’t, it’s the same thing as having borrowed on your home in order to have cash laying around.

If I’m in your shoes, as soon as the emergency fund is in place

— six months of expenses since your wife likes the security factor — and 15 percent is being put away for retirement, I’d take the other money and throw it at the house. Get that thing paid off as fast as you can!

Iron & Glass will always have 10 rotating beers on draft, one cider and one non-alcoholic ginger brew

The world of craft beer has fast become a phenomenon of its own and the new owners of Iron & Glass in Romeoville are carving out their own niche in it.

Neighbors, friends, and now business partners, Eric Schultz and Colt Snodgrass have a main goal in mind—to share their passion for craft beer while bringing a new, affordable experience to a community that has already begun to embrace them.

Iron & Glass, 632 S. Weber Road, a taproom and bottleshop, is a fairly new concept; one-part liquor store, one-part tasting room where patrons can purchase a unique craft beer, cider or mead of nearly 200 choice varieties; sample a new brew of the 10 to 12 latest and freshest on tap; or both, bottle sharing with those on premise is welcome.

Snodgrass said the pair had seen places in other states for such an “on premise/off premise” type of establishment, but nothing locally.

“With our passion for craft beer, we knew that this was a place we would like to visit and thought we could try to bring the experience here,” said Snodgrass.

Both dads of young children, they decided it was one of those “now or never” moments, opting to seize an opportunity to make their passion become their business about three years ago.

“We also saw how prices for craft beer began rising and we want to keep craft affordable for the consumer,” said Snodgrass.

But it wasn’t an immediate win.

After approaching a few different towns and villages, they were met with skepticism over a new concept foreign to most.

model and just thought we were going to be a rowdy bar,” explained Schultz.

The love for the project had them revisit the idea, both their wives, Maggie Schultz and Christine Snodgrass, also partners in the business continued to brainstorm.

With the open of Romeoville’s first brewery Metal Monkey last year and business connections to the village, the door was open for the idea of Iron & Glass.

“Metal Monkey just opened and Starbucks was selling beer at the time (not any longer); we started thinking this might actually happen; if we don’t do it now, we will never do it; our kids were getting older...so we went back to update our business plan and presented it,” said Schultz.

In December, the husband and wife teams opened Iron & Glass and have already established a following. As craft beer enthusiasts watch for the latest brew, odds are they will land on the bottleshop’s shelves. Schultz explains they are calling distributers daily to ensure they are well stocked in the latest and greatest—that’s what their passion lies—getting the right beer in the right hands.

“That’s what differentiates us from a brewery,” said Schultz. “A brewery is constantly brewing beer; we are constantly ordering beer. There are different challenges for each—a brewery is more labor intensive; for us we have a conversation every day with people to find the best beer; and what’s new.”

And when it’s hot, it’s gone. Once Iron & Glass posts on Facebook or the app Untappd that something is in stock; a particular batch can be gone in a few hours.

“We are here to educate the community on craft beer to show how much great beer there is available,” said Schultz. We try to be into as much Illinois beer as possible because there is such great local beer but we also want to spotlight everything else that is available in the country.”

In addition to craft beer, wine, cider and mead are also offered.

“All the local fresh harvests really bring up the flavor profiles. Freshness is what you get out of this and that is what matters. We are trying

to stay local so that means you are going to get the freshest stuff possible,” said Snodgrass. “We are not pushing one style. There is a beer out there for everyone, if not, there’s a cider. Please come in and taste; find out what you like; we will help you along the way.”

“We have it because we are family friendly; it’s important to us, we both have kids, we want to have a place where families can feel comfortable coming into the store,” said Schultz.

They also are BYOF—that is bring your own food. Bring what you like, take advantage of the WIFI and relax. Every Friday the taproom will also have a food truck onsite.

But what they don’t have—flat screen TVs—and that’s a good thing.

“Initially, we want to get a strong community feel out here; which we’ve seen; we’ve already got a lot of regulars,” said Snodgrass. Every-

one pulls their chairs up around the bar, talking and sharing beer, talk about beer and that’s all without TVs. People are taking bottles off the shelf and passing them around so everyone can share.

That’s what we like; we like people and we like talking about beer! We want to share that.”

The endeavor has been lifechanging for both families.

“It’s the four of us; we’re still pushing mops around with the kids running all around while we get ready to open. We don’t have any big investors, this is us. It’s a little bit surreal. Success and failure is all on us now—but we like that pressure,” said Schultz.

“We both looking forward to coming to work--how many people can say that about their job—I know I couldn’t say that before. We get to do what we love,” said Snodgrass.

“Its weird to think that one of the beers we’ve chased after for years to have in our home, we are now serving in our own store—surreal.”
