Top right, hundreds of supporters turned out for the event, hosted by the Joliet Slammers. Right, Audrey Montalto with her parents, Millie and Gene, who both died from pancreatic cancer.

H

ow providential that Audrey Montalto’s mother agreed to a routine CT scan. By doing so, Millie Majka’s pancreatic cancer was found early, when treatment was still possible, so Millie could take care of Montalto’s father Gene Majka, who also had pancreatic cancer. “It’s the fourth leading cause of cancer death,” Montalto said,“but it’s making its way to second.”

For the third year in a row, Montalto is hosting Strike Out Pancreatic Cancer at Silver Cross Field in Joliet to raise awareness of this deadly and silent disease that claimed both her parents, Gene in 2005 and Millie in 2008. “It’s a really bad cancer,” Montalto said.“The symptoms can be mistaken for other things, such as gall stones. If the tumor is in a certain area, it can crush a bile duct and cause jaundice. Some people lose their appetite See SLAMMERS, page 2
